Vietnamese rivers are among the top ten contributors of anthropogenic debris to the ocean. However, there is limited empirical research documenting debris and its effects in Northern Vietnam. The goal of our research was to conduct the first baseline assessment of anthropogenic debris in the Red River. We aimed to understand the sources, accumulation patterns, and ecological effects of anthropogenic debris in the Red River (Song Hong) estuary. To assess debris patterns, we conducted standing stock debris surveys at sites in the mouth, and upstream of the Red River. To assess the ecological effects of anthropogenic debris on mangrove ecosystems, we measured mangrove diameter, canopy cover, and number of crab burrows/m2 in the same debris transects. Anthropogenic debris was found at all sites, and plastic was the most common material. We identified a non-significant trend, whereby ecological indices declined with increasing amounts of debris. Overall, our results demonstrate that anthropogenic debris is ubiquitous in the Red River estuary, composition varies among sites, and this debris may have adverse or neutral ecological effects on mangrove ecosystem health. Future work will assess community-level impacts of debris and other anthropogenic stressors (invasive species, chemical contaminants) at a larger spatial scale, and will assess the ecosystem-level impacts of debris removal. This research informs our fundamental understanding of how litter and other stressors impact biota in the Red River, while also contributing to our understanding of how management strategies for debris removal may be effective in large, Southeast Asian rivers. Eight new localities of the rare, strictly protected macrophyte Vallisneria spiralis have been recorded during a comprehensive survey of water bodies in Croatia. One record is located in the Mediterranean Region, in Butoniga Reservoir, while the remaining records are from the Continental Region, the majority of them situated along the Kupa River. Vallisneria spiralis occurred in slightly basic and alkaline environments and in a wide range of nutrient availability. In Continental localities, the species was present within Myriophyllo-Nupharetum luteae of the alliance Nymphaeion-albae, while in Butoniga, it occurred within the vegetation of the alliance Potamogetonion. Prior to our research, the species was recorded in Croatia only twice, with the older record dating back to the 19th century and the second from recent years, but neither one was confirmed in later surveys. The low number of records of V. spiralis, in spite of a wide-ranging search through hundreds of localities, confirmed the rare status of this species, although the reasons for such limited distribution remain unclear, especially bearing in mind that suitable aquatic habitats are quite widespread in the country.

The hydrological characteristics of a river, including the magnitude and timing of high and low flows, are important determinants of its ecological functioning. Climate change will alter these characteristics, triggering ecological changes in river ecosystems. This study assesses risks of ecological change in 321 major river basins across the globe due to global warming relative to pre‐industrial conditions of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0°C. Risks associated with climate‐driven changes to high and low flows, relative to baseline (1980–2010; 0.6°C warming), are investigated using simulations from nine global hydrological models forced with climate projections from five global climate models, resulting in an ensemble of 14,445 baseline‐scenario members for each warming scenario (9 × 5 × 321). At the global‐scale, the likelihood of high risks of significant ecological change in both high and low flows increase with global warming: across all basins there is a medium‐high risk of change in high (low) flows in 21.4% (22.4%) of ensemble members for 1.0°C warming, increasing to 61.5% (63.2%) for 3.0°C. Risks are particularly pronounced for low flows at 3.0°C for many rivers in South America, southern Africa, Australia, southern Europe and central and eastern USA. Results suggest that boreal regions are least likely to see significant ecological change due to modified river flows but this may be partly the result of the exclusion of processes such as permafrost dynamics from most global hydrological models. The study highlights the ecological fragility and spatial heterogeneity of the risks that unmitigated climate change poses to global river ecosystems.

Large wood (LW) is a natural element of river environments and an integral component of many river restoration schemes to promote biodiversity. It is an important habitat in itself, but it also induces a wide range of hydraulic, hydrological, geomorphological and chemical conditions that influence the ecological community. However, the effects of hydro‐geomorphological processes induced by LW on local benthic and hyporheic invertebrates have not been well characterized. A functional approach was applied to invertebrate data collected in a field survey at sites with LW and without LW (control) to investigate the response of hyporheic and benthic invertebrates' trait profiles in response to local LW‐induced processes. We hypothesized LW sites to be associated with different trait modalities than control sites in relation to wood‐induced processes and conditions (i.e., hyporheic exchange flow, oxygen availability, temporal stability, organic matter, denitrification, hydraulic conductivity). Multivariate analyses and partial least squares (PLS) path modelling were used to detect the differences in trait profiles between LW and control sites and to study the variation of traits as a function of hydrological, sedimentological, physical and chemical variables. Biological (i.e., aquatic stages, reproduction), physiological (i.e., dispersal, feeding habits) and behavioural (i.e., substrate preferences) trait utilization by the hyporheic meiofauna differed between LW and control sites. At LW sites, the hyporheic meiofaunal assemblage was significantly associated with aquatic active dispersal, aquatic eggs and hard substrate preferences. This trait category selection was linked to changes in physical–sedimentological processes at LW sites when compared to control sites. Macrofaunal benthic and hyporheic functional traits did not differ significantly between wood and control sites, suggesting similar functioning of these assemblages at the surface–subsurface interface. This study found that LW affects invertebrate traits by altering fluvial processes to produce, locally, a mosaic of habitats. Hyporheic meiofauna trait responses to LW processes have suggested (a) the crucial role of LW in supporting river benthic zone functioning and thus (b) a possible benefit to river restoration by enhancing functional interactions among different ecological niches. O espaço compreendido entre o rio e a vegetação existente no seu entorno constitui a zona ripária, sendo que esta área produz detritos lenhosos que modificam a dinâmica fluvial. Estes fragmentos de madeira são chamados de woody debris (WD) na literatura mundial, sendo constituídos por galhos e troncos depositados no canal do rio. Uma das formas que os WD podem modificar a geomorfologia do rio é formando degraus e piscinas, o chamado sistema step-pool. Desta forma, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi realizar uma revisão bibliográfica sobre detritos lenhosos em rios e identificar os principais enfoques utilizados em pesquisas sobre a ocorrência e monitoramento destes materiais. Observou-se que os WD podem ser encontrados como peças individuais ou formando acumulações, e que existe uma tendência entre os pesquisadores em analisar diâmetro e comprimento das peças, com obtenção do volume total em comprimento de rio. Concluiu-se que existe uma lacuna em relação ao manejo dos detritos lenhosos no Brasil, visto que apenas um bioma (Mata Atlântica) foi abrangido nas poucas pesquisas realizadas. Salienta-se que o conhecimento da dinâmica dos WD pode futuramente ser utilizado na gestão de bacias hidrográficas e em técnicas que visam o manejo de rios. The area between the river and its surrounding vegetation constitutes the riparian zone which produces woody debris (WD) that modifies the fluvial dynamics. The WD is constituted by branches and trunks deposited in the river channel. One of the ways that WD can modify the geomorphology of the river is to form steps and pools (step-pool system). In this way, the objective of the present study was to perform a literature review on woody debris in rivers and, to identify the main focus used in research on the occurrence and monitoring of these materials. It was observed that the WD can be found as individual pieces or forming accumulations, and that there is a tendency among the researchers to analyze the diameter and length of the pieces, obtaining the total volume in length of river. There is a gap regarding the woody debris management in Brazil, because only one biome (Atlantic Forest) was included in the few researches carried out. The knowledge of WD dynamics can be surely used in the future in the watersheds management and for rivers renaturalization.

Anthropogenic activities have more than doubled the amount of reactive nitrogen circulating on Earth, creating excess nutrients across the terrestrial-aquatic gradient. These excess nutrients have caused worldwide eutrophication, fundamentally altering the functioning of freshwater and marine ecosystems. Riparian zones have been recognized to buffer diffuse nitrate pollution, reducing delivery to aquatic ecosystems, but nutrient removal is not their only function in river systems. In this paper, we propose a new conceptual framework to test the capacity of riparian corridors to retain, remove, and transfer nitrogen along the continuum from land to sea under different climatic conditions. Because longitudinal, lateral, and vertical connectivity in riparian corridors influences their functional role in landscapes, we highlight differences in these parameters across biomes. More specifically, we explore how the structure of riparian corridors shapes stream morphology (the river’s spine), their multiple functions at the interface between the stream and its catchment (the skin), and their biogeochemical capacity to retain and remove nitrogen (the kidneys). We use the nitrogen cycle as an example because nitrogen pollution is one of the most pressing global environmental issues, influencing directly and indirectly virtually all ecosystems on Earth. As an initial test of the applicability of our interbiome approach, we present synthesis results of gross ammonification and net nitrification from diverse ecosystems.

We investigate the scientific and communicative value of time-lapse imagery by exploring applications for data collection and visualization. Time-lapse imagery has a myriad of possible applications to study and depict ecosystems and can operate at unique temporal and spatial scales to bridge the gap between large-scale satellite imagery projects and observational field research. Time-lapse data sequences, linking time-lapse imagery with data visualization, have the ability to make data come alive for a wider audience by connecting abstract numbers to images that root data in time and place. Utilizing imagery from the Platte Basin Timelapse Project, water inundation and vegetation phenology metrics are quantified via image analysis and then paired with passive monitoring data, including streamflow and water chemistry. Dynamic and interactive time-lapse data sequences elucidate the visible and invisible ecological dynamics of a significantly altered yet internationally important river system in central Nebraska.

The aim of this study was the determination and comparative analysis of the zooplankton communities between the inter-connected sections of the lower Oder river in relation to physicochemical factors. The study was performed at five sites of Oder. Two sites were localized in the main channel of Oder (East Oder), other sites were localized in the west arm of Oder and at the beginning of the canal carrying the post-cooling water from the power plant, and the last site was below at the shallow channel joining the Western Oder with the Eastern Oder. At the channel site in which the two arms of the river are connected a significantly higher taxa number, abundance and biomass of crustaceans was observed than at the other sites. The taxonomic similarity index between all sites was at a rather low level. The Pearson’s coefficient, multiple regression analysis and CCA showed that temperature, conductivity and content of nitrates had the strongest impact on the abundance of zooplankton. Thus, in lower, slowly flowing section of River Oder the physico-chemical variables influenced zooplankton density. Post-cooling water from the power plant influenced the zooplankton communities only in the channel discharging the waters into the river, while its influence on the zooplankton in the Oder is insignificant.

Hydropower developments along the main stem of the Mekong River and its tributaries cause transboundary effects within the Mekong Basin Region, which comprises parts of six countries. On the one hand, the provision of hydropower triggers economic development and helps to meet the rising energy demand of the Mekong riparian countries, especially China, Thailand, and Vietnam. On the other hand, the negative impact of dam construction, mainly altered water flow and sediment load, has severe impacts on the environment and the livelihoods of the rural Mekong population. Several discrepancies exist in the needs, demands, and challenges of upstream versus downstream countries. Against the common apprehension that downstream countries are powerlessly exposed to mainly negative impacts whereas upstream countries unilaterally benefit from hydropower, the authors argue that upstream–downstream relations are not really clear-cut. This conclusion is based on a consideration of the complex power play between Mekong riparians, with a focus on recent power trade interactions. The article investigates the consequences of hydropower dams for the Mekong region as well as the role of supranational players, such as the Mekong River Commission and the Greater Mekong Subregion Initiative, on the hydropower debate. It is not nations that are the winners or losers in the hydropower schemes in the Mekong, but rather parts of the riparian population: a few influential and powerful elites versus the large mass of rural poor.

We studied the effect of flooding on a carabid community inhabiting grassland in a large river valley (W Poland). We used pitfall-traps to catch beetles from April to November 1999-2001. Some of the samples collected were preceded by floods during the collecting period, which enabled us to evaluate the effects of flooding on species composition and abundance. We collected 17,722 individuals belonging to 108 species. The number of species and individuals per sample differed between plots and showed a nonlinear decrease over time, from spring to autumn. Carabids were more abundant in samples collected after floods than in the control samples. In contrast, the expected cumulative number of species as a function of the number of individuals collected was lower in samples collected after floods than in the control samples. In the case of the most abundant species the species-specific responses in terms of the numbers caught after flooding differed, with those of (e.g. Agonum micans) increasing and those of (Amara plebeja, Epaphius secalis) decreasing. This study shows that floods filter the community with the result that some species increase in abundance but the overall species richness decreases. Therefore natural floods are important in shaping the structure of communities of epigeic carabids on floodplains.

The aim of this paper is to study the relationships between the physical features of rivers and the distribution of macrophyte vegetation. Field work was undertaken at 207 stations along the Scorff River and its tributaries, a salmon river system in southern Brittany (western France). The physical features were considered using a principal component analysis (PCA). Stepwise multiple regression models made it possible to assess their relationships with the botanical data. The first five axes of the physical PCA (used as explicative variables) were initially linked to the most frequently surveyed species, then to their eco-morphological types, and, finally to Arber’s (1920. Water Plants. A Study of Aquatic Angiosperms. Cambridge Univ. Press, Cambridge, 414 pp) morphological classification. It was concluded that plant morphology was closely related to these environmental factors. This could contribute to the development of predictive models for plant distribution and could increase the knowledge of reference vegetation related to bioindication systems.

This report collects the documents generated as part of a two year effort to catalogue the variety of water quality and quantity data that has been collected in the Columbia Basin Trust region of British Columbia. Through the cataloguing effort, a number of important data and knowledge gaps were identified and specific recommendations developed. The available water quantity and climate data was then used in a number of analyses focused on understanding the relationship between changing climate conditions and stream discharges. One overall finding is that there is a large variety of data collected and held by various different entities. These data sets exist in a variety of sometimes inconsistent formats, with different and sometimes challenging means of access. A unifying recommendation is that the Columbia Basin Trust, alone or in cooperation with other agencies, work to develop a data repository to collect and archive data sets and link to other data sources, and a portal to provide easy access for researchers and the public to this data.

Studies on zooplankton ecology have traditionally dealt with lentic systems, while research on lotic assemblages has lagged far behind. It is especially in the last decades that riverine zooplankton has become the focus of an increasing number of investigations, showing that large lowland rivers often host extremely rich and abundant plankton communities. Surveys conducted in rivers all over the world highlighted the major role played by abiotic constraints in shaping the development of riverine zooplankton, while much fewer studies have dealt with biotic factors, which are generally thought to play a minor role in the main current of rivers. Despite this growing amount of research, questions still remain to be answered regarding the origin of river plankton, how these communities are able to persist in the current and the major mechanisms involved in regulating their spatio-temporal dynamics. The present work deals with different aspects of the ecology of zooplankton in a large lowland river (Po River, Northern Italy). A multi-level approach was adopted, combining different surveys carried out at distinct spatial and temporal resolutions, based on the following main research questions: 1. What are the main abiotic and biotic factors controlling the spatio-temporal dynamics of zooplankton abundance and composition in the potamal reach of a lowland river? What is the effect of disturbance events like floods on community structure? Is the community able to exhibit regular successional patterns? These research topics have been addressed by means of a two-year sampling campaign carried out in the potamal reach of the Po River. Results confirmed the role of abiotic constraints related to seasonality and hydrology, together with that of trophic conditions, as the major drivers of zooplankton dynamics. The comparison of two hydrologically different years suggested that the uncoupling between seasonality and hydrology can significantly influence community density and diversity temporal patterns. The relationship between discharge and zooplankton abundance is not univocally negative, as increases in river flow may at times bring about a net increment of the assemblage, when resuspension of organisms from the river bottom and/or littoral zones prevails over advective losses. Discharge fluctuations strongly affect zooplankton diversity too, both taxonomical and functional, with higher diversity associated with increases in river flow, up to a threshold over which destructive effects dominate. However, the impact of hydrodynamic forcings in shaping lotic zooplankton appears to lose importance in favour of that of seasonality and trophic state when moving down the longitudinal dimension of the river system, and a clear downstream shift towards a truly planktonic community occurs, especially during summer low-flow conditions. 2. Can biotic interactions (predation/competition) within the zooplankton become crucial drivers of community structure under advective conditions? A short-term, high-frequency sampling campaign was carried out in summer 2005 in the potamal stretch of the Po River. To test for the presence of association patterns among zooplankters, which might be suggestive of potential trophic interactions (predation/competition), taxa were aggregated into functional groups according to their feeding ecology, and time series of their abundances were analysed by means of a variance ratio test and multivariate autoregressive models, which revealed the occurrence of compensatory dynamics among functional groups under low and stable, although truly advective, discharge conditions. Evidence on the importance of predator-prey interactions and intra-population regulation mechanisms also came from further analyses on the dominant predator's gut contents and on its main prey's population dynamics. Results showed that, under certain conditions, zooplankton is able to exhibit internal, self-regulatory mechanisms also in the main current of a large river and the view of riverine zooplankton as a mere assemblage of taxa exclusively abiotically controlled is therefore oversimplified. 3. What are the main changes within the plankton community during its downstream transport and how can the observed longitudinal dynamics be explained? What is the contribution of the major tributaries to the main channel zooplankton assemblage? These questions have been addressed by means of a Lagrangian sampling experiment carried out in May 2010 on a 330-km river stretch. Results highlighted how water residence time under spring conditions is too short to allow longitudinal development of zooplankton, which is merely transported downstream without significant changes in abundance and composition. One of the tributaries, the Mincio River, hosted an exceptionally abundant zooplankton community, which resulted in a significant increase in total zooplankton densities in the Po River downstream of its inflow. The Mincio lower course is highly regulated and artificially modified. The result is a system where current is extremely impaired and slowed down, creating favourable conditions for phyto- and zooplankton massive development. As a consequence, the influence of this tributary on the Po River zooplankton during the survey was still detectable as far as 100 km downstream of its mouth and the community composition recorded downstream of the Mincio inflow was more similar to the assemblage found in the tributary than to that found at the upstream stations of the Po River itself. 4. Does the presence of an hydrological discontinuity along the river course, such as a man-made reservoir, induce relevant changes in zooplankton composition and abundance? Are there significant differences in community structure along cross-channel transects (middle channel versus river banks) or is the river a completely well-mixed environment with homogeneously distributed plankton assemblages? A sampling campaign was carried out in summer 2009 at four stations respectively upstream, inside (mid-channel vs. shore) and downstream of the artificial impoundment of Isola Serafini, located in the middle reach of the Po River. The study revealed that longitudinal and lateral hydrogeomorphic heterogeneity may affect community abundance and diversity, so that the assemblage found at one site along the river may also be related to local hydroecological features and not only to processes taking place further upstream. However, in a rectified and channelized river like the Po, this appears to be the case only at extremely low discharge rates and high water residence time. Results of the surveys carried out along extremely artificialized traits of both the Po River (Isola Serafini dam) and its tributaries (lower section of the Mincio River) showed how anthropogenic modifications of the river's natural hydrogeomorphic features may have strong impacts also on biotic components that are usually overlooked by standard monitoring programs, even though their role in the functioning of lotic systems is still not completely understood.

The assessment of the diversity of habitats and the characterisation of the functional trophic groups of benthic macroinvertebrate communities of some rivers of Serra do Cipó (MG) were the main objectives of this study. The available trophic resources and the types of substrata were characterised along with the structure and composition of their using functional trophic groups. Serra do Cipó is a watershed divisor of the São Francisco and Doce River basins, including a series of streams and rivers, of good water quality and well preserved ecological characteristics. Samples were collected in Cipó, Peixe and Preto do Itambé rivers, besides the Indaiá and Capão da Mata streams at 26 sampling stations, during the rainy (February) and dry (October) seasons of 1998, using "Kicking nets" of 0.125 mm mesh size. The group of collectors (Baetidae, Leptophlebiidae and Leptohyphidae) was the most abundant, followed by collector-predators (Hydrophilidae, Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae-Tanypodinae), and detritivorous-herbivores (Oligochaeta). The riparian vegetation, together with the aquatic macrophytes, are the substrata containing the highest richness of functional trophic groups and the higher habitat diversity. The results suggest that the use of functional trophic groups, together with habitat evaluation, are efficient tools in the evaluation of the diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates, particularly in altitudinal lotic ecosystems. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a diversidade de habitats e caracterizar os grupos tróficos funcionais das comunidades de macroinvertebrados bentônicos em alguns rios na Serra do Cipó, MG. Foram caracterizados os recursos tróficos disponíveis e os tipos de substrato nos habitats amostrados, a composição de grupos tróficos funcionais que os utilizam e a estrutura da comunidade de macroinvertebrados bentônicos. A Serra do Cipó constitui-se em um divisor de águas das bacias do Rio São Francisco e do Rio Doce e engloba uma série de córregos e rios, com características ecológicas ainda bem preservadas e águas de boa qualidade. Foram amostrados os rios Cipó, Peixe e Preto do Itambé, além dos córregos Indaiá e Capão da Mata ao longo de 26 estações amostrais. As amostras foram coletadas nos períodos de chuva (fevereiro) e seca (outubro) de 1998, utilizando-se "Kicking nets" com malha de 0,125 mm. Os resultados evidenciaram que o grupo dos coletores (Baetidae, Leptophlebiidae e Leptohyphidae) foi o mais abundante, seguido pelos coletores-predadores (Hydrophilidae, Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae-Tanypodinae) e detritívoros-herbívoros (Oligochaeta). A avaliação da diversidade de habitats permitiu caracterizar a vegetação ripária, juntamente com as macrófitas aquáticas, como os substratos contendo a maior riqueza de grupos tróficos funcionais, por oferecerem maior diversidade de habitats. Os resultados sugerem que a utilização de grupos tróficos funcionais, juntamente com a avaliação de habitats, constituem eficientes ferramentas na avaliação da diversidade da macrofauna bentônica em ecossitemas lóticos de altitude.

Hydropower use is responsible for a wide range of environmental disturbances to river systems. Over the past decades, aquatic science research has been successful in identifying a considerable number of relationships that exist between plant operation and ecosystem quality. This increase in scientific knowledge was, however, not matched by a corresponding reduction in environmental impacts stemming from hydropower. In the present paper, we show how aquatic science projects may be defined and implemented to better link scientific knowledge with the resolution of environmental problems. We base our analysis on a major aquatic science research project in which an eco-label for "sustainable hydropower" (Green Hydropower) was developed for Switzerland. We first assess the state of aquatic science research on alpine river systems. The Swiss history of hydropower shows that the limited adoption of this knowledge was due to a severe coordination and action problem. The Green Hydropower project aimed at establishing an environmental product label for hydropower plant operation, which should help overcome these problems. It had to deal with two major challenges: the integration of widely differing knowledge stocks and the management of a network of diverse stakeholders operating in a conflict-laden political environment. By carefully dealing with these two problem areas, the project was finally able to define a scientifically-based and broadly-accepted standard for Green Hydropower operation. We conclude by discussing lessons for the improvement of problem-oriented aquatic science research, in general.

Les proliférations nuisibles de la cyanobactérie filamenteuse benthique Lyngbya wollei qui forme des tapis déposés sur les sédiments ont augmenté en fréquence au cours des 30 dernières années dans les rivières, lacs et sources de l'Amérique du Nord. Lyngbya wollei produit des neurotoxines et des composés organiques volatils (géosmin, 2-méthylisobornéol) qui ont des répercussions sur la santé publique de même que des impacts d'ordre socioéconomiques. Cette cyanobactérie est considérée comme un habitat et une source de nourriture de piètre qualité pour les invertébrés en raison de sa gaine robuste et de sa production de toxines. Les proliférations de L. wollei ont été observées pour la première fois en 2005 dans le fleuve Saint-Laurent (SLR; Québec, Canada). Nous avons jugé important de déterminer sa distribution sur un tronçon de 250 km afin d'élaborer des modèles prédictifs de sa présence et biomasse en se basant sur les caractéristiques chimiques et physiques de l'eau. Lyngbya wollei était généralement observé en aval de la confluence de petits tributaires qui irriguent des terres agricoles. L’écoulement d’eaux enrichies à travers la végétation submergée se traduisait par une diminution de la concentration d’azote inorganique dissous (DIN), alors que les concentrations de carbone organique dissous (DOC) et de phosphore total dissous (TDP) demeuraient élevées, produisant un faible rapport DIN :TDP. Selon nos modèles, DOC (effet positif), TP (effet négatif) et DIN :TDP (effet négatif) sont les variables les plus importantes pour expliquer la répartition de cette cyanobactérie. La probabilité que L. wollei soit présent dans le SLR a été prédite avec exactitude dans 72 % à 92 % des cas pour un ensemble de données indépendantes. Nous avons ensuite examiné si les conditions hydrodynamiques, c'est-à-dire le courant généré par les vagues et l'écoulement du fleuve, contrôlent les variations spatiales et temporelles de biomasse de L. wollei dans un grand système fluvial. Nous avons mesuré la biomasse de L. wollei ainsi que les variables chimiques, physiques et météorologiques durant trois ans à 10 sites le long d'un gradient d'exposition au courant et au vent dans un grand (148 km2) lac fluvial du SLR. L'exposition aux vagues et la vitesse du courant contrôlaient les variations de biomasses spatiales et temporelles. La biomasse augmentait de mai à novembre et persistait durant l'hiver. Les variations interannuelles étaient contrôlées par l'écoulement de la rivière (niveau d'eau) avec la crue printanière qui délogeait les tapis de l'année précédente. Les baisses du niveau d'eau et l'augmentation de l'intensité des tempêtes anticipées par les scénarios de changements climatiques pourraient accroître la superficie colonisée par L. wollei de même que son accumulation sur les berges. Par la suite, nous avons évalué l'importance relative de L. wollei par rapport aux macrophytes et aux épiphytes. Nous avons examiné l'influence structurante de l'échelle spatiale sur les variables environnementales et la biomasse de ces producteurs primaires (PP) benthiques. Nous avons testé si leur biomasse reflétait la nature des agrégats d'habitat basées sur l'écogéomorphologie ou plutôt le continuum fluvial. Pour répondre à ces deux questions, nous avons utilisé un design à 3 échelles spatiales dans le SLR: 1) le long d'un tronçon de 250 km, 2) entre les lacs fluviaux localisés dans ce tronçon, 3) à l'intérieur de chaque lac fluvial. Les facteurs environnementaux (conductivité et TP) et la structure spatiale expliquent 59% de la variation de biomasse des trois PP benthiques. Spécifiquement, les variations de biomasses étaient le mieux expliquées par la conductivité (+) pour les macrophytes, par le ratio DIN:TDP (+) et le coefficient d'extinction lumineuse (+) pour les épiphytes et par le DOC (+) et le NH4+ (-) pour L. wollei. La structure spatiale à l'intérieur des lacs fluviaux était la plus importante composante spatiale pour tous les PP benthiques, suggérant que les effets locaux tels que l'enrichissement par les tributaire plutôt que les gradients amont-aval déterminent la biomasse de PP benthiques. Donc, la dynamique des agrégats d'habitat représente un cadre général adéquat pour expliquer les variations spatiales et la grande variété de conditions environnementales supportant des organismes aquatiques dans les grands fleuves. Enfin, nous avons étudié le rôle écologique des tapis de L. wollei dans les écosystèmes aquatiques, en particulier comme source de nourriture et refuge pour l'amphipode Gammarus fasciatus. Nous avons offert aux amphipodes un choix entre des tapis de L. wollei et soit des chlorophytes filamenteuses ou un tapis artificiel de laine acrylique lors d'expériences en laboratoire. Nous avons aussi reconstitué la diète in situ des amphipodes à l'aide du mixing model (d13C et δ15N). Gammarus fasciatus choisissait le substrat offrant le meilleur refuge face à la lumière (Acrylique>Lyngbya=Rhizoclonium>Spirogyra). La présence de saxitoxines, la composition élémentaire des tissus et l'abondance des épiphytes n'ont eu aucun effet sur le choix de substrat. Lyngbya wollei et ses épiphytes constituaient 36 et 24 % de l'alimentation in situ de G. fasciatus alors que les chlorophytes, les macrophytes et les épiphytes associées représentaient une fraction moins importante de son alimentation. Les tapis de cyanobactéries benthiques devraient être considérés comme un bon refuge et une source de nourriture pour les petits invertébrés omnivores tels que les amphipodes., Harmful proliferations of the filamentous cyanobacterium L. wollei forming conspicuous benthic mats on the bottom sediment have been reported with increasing frequency in the last 30 years in rivers, lakes, and springs in North America. It is a known producer of neurotoxins and volatile organic compounds (geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol) thus exerting socioeconomic and public health impacts. Lyngbya wollei is also considered a poor nutritional source for invertebrates because of its robust sheath and toxin production. Proliferation of L. wollei in St. Lawrence River (SLR; Quebec, Canada) was first noticed in 2005. We deemed important to determine its distribution over a 250 km stretch of the SLR to elaborate predictive models of its presence and biomass based on chemical and physical characteristics. Lyngbya wollei was generally found downstream of the inflow tributaries draining farmlands. As enriched waters flowed slowly through submerged vegetation, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentration dropped but dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) remained high, leading to a low DIN:TDP ratio. Models identified DOC (positive effect), TP (negative effect), and DIN:TDP (negative effect) as the most important variables explaining L. wollei distribution. The risk of L. wollei occurrence in the SLR was correctly forecasted in 72%-92% of all cases with an independent data set. We then examined if hydrodynamic conditions, namely currents generated by waves and river flow, control spatial and temporal variations of L. wollei biomass in a large river system. We measured L. wollei biomass together with meteorological, physical, and chemical variables over three years at 10 sites along a gradient of exposure to current and wind in a large (148 km2) fluvial lake of SLR. Wave exposure and current velocity controlled spatial and temporal biomass variations. Biomass increased from May to November and persisted during winter. Interannual variations were primarily controlled by river flow (water level) with spring discharge dislodging mats from the previous year. As anticipated under climate change scenarios, drops in water level and rising storm intensity may lead to an increase in the areas colonized by L. wollei, together with more frequent episodes of mat disruption and beach fouling. Additionally, we evaluated the relative importance of L. wollei with respect to macrophytes and epiphytes. We assessed the influence of the spatial scale in structuring environmental variables and biomass of these benthic primary producers (PP). We also test to which extent their biomass reflected the nature of patches based on ecogeomorphology or the river continuum. To address these two questions, we used a nested design at 3 spatial scales within the SLR: 1) along a 250-km-long upstream-downstream river stretch, 2) among three fluvial lakes located within that river stretch and 3) within each fluvial lake. Environmental factors (conductivity and TP) and spatial structure together explained 59% of the variability in biomass of all three benthic PP. Spatial variability of biomass was best explained by conductivity (+) for macrophytes, DIN:TDP ratio (+) and water extinction coefficient (+) for epiphytes and DOC (+) and NH4+ (-) for L. wollei mats. Within-lake structure was the most important spatial component for all benthic PP, suggesting that local effects, such as enrichment by the inflow of tributaries, rather than upstream-downstream gradients, determined the biomass and composition of benthic PP. Therefore patch dynamics represents a general framework which adequately covers the spatial variability and wide variety of environmental conditions experienced by aquatic organisms found in large rivers. Finally, we investigated the ecological role of L. wollei mats in aquatic ecosystems, especially as a food source and shelter for the amphipod Gammarus fasciatus. We offered amphipods a choice between mats of L. wollei and either chlorophytes or an artificial mat made of acrylic wool in laboratory experiment. Moreover, we reconstructed in situ amphipod diet using mixing model (δ13C and δ15N). Gammarus fasciatus selected the substratum offering the best light refuge (Acrylic > Lyngbya = Rhizoclonium > Spirogyra). Presence of saxitoxins, tissue elemental composition and epiphyte abundance had no significant effect on substratum choice. Lyngbya wollei and its epiphytes constituted 36 and 24% of the in situ diet of G. fasciatus whereas chlorophytes, macrophytes and associated epiphytes represented a less important fraction of its diet. Benthic cyanobacterial mats should be considered a good shelter and food source for small omnivorous invertebrates such as amphipods.
