In situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was employed to identify critical parameters during thermal treatment for template removal of an ordered mesoporous carbon precursor synthesized via a direct soft-templating route. The structural parameters obtained from the SAXS data as a function of time were the lattice parameter of the 2D hexagonal structure, the diameter of the cylindrical mesostructures and a power-law exponent characterizing the interface roughness. Moreover, detailed information on contrast changes and pore lattice order was obtained from analysis of the integrated SAXS intensity of the Bragg and diffuse scattering separately. Five characteristic regions during heat treatment were identified and discussed regarding the underlying dominant processes. The influence of temperature and O2/N2 ratio on the final structure was analyzed, and parameter ranges were identified for an optimized template removal without strongly affecting the matrix. The results indicate that the final structure and controllability of the process are optimum for temperatures between 260 and 300°C with a gas flow containing 2 mol% of O2.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are affected by dietary factors, including nondigestible carbohydrates (fibers), which are fermented by colonic microbes. Fibers are overall beneficial, but not all fibers are alike, and some patients with IBD report intolerance to fiber consumption. Given reproducible evidence of reduced fiber-fermenting microbes in patients with IBD, we hypothesized that fibers remain intact in select patients with reduced fiber-fermenting microbes and can then bind host cell receptors, subsequently promoting gut inflammation.Colonic biopsies cultured ex vivo and cell lines in vitro were incubated with oligofructose (5 g/L), or fermentation supernatants (24-hour anaerobic fermentation) and immune responses (cytokine secretion [enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay/meso scale discovery] and expression [quantitative polymerase chain reaction]) were assessed. Influence of microbiota in mediating host response was examined and taxonomic classification of microbiota was conducted with Kraken2 and metabolic profiling by HUMAnN2, using R software.Unfermented dietary β-fructan fibers induced proinflammatory cytokines in a subset of IBD intestinal biopsies cultured ex vivo, and immune cells (including peripheral blood mononuclear cells). Results were validated in an adult IBD randomized controlled trial examining β-fructan supplementation. The proinflammatory response to intact β-fructan required activation of the NLRP3 and TLR2 pathways. Fermentation of β-fructans by human gut whole microbiota cultures reduced the proinflammatory response, but only when microbes were collected from patients without IBD or patients with inactive IBD. Fiber-induced immune responses correlated with microbe functions, luminal metabolites, and dietary fiber avoidance.Although fibers are typically beneficial in individuals with normal microbial fermentative potential, some dietary fibers have detrimental effects in select patients with active IBD who lack fermentative microbe activities. Myelin is the protective sheath wrapped around axons, consisting of a phospholipid bilayer with water between the wraps. The measurement of damage to the myelin sheaths, the evaluation of the efficacy of therapies aiming to promote remyelination and monitoring the degree of brain maturation in children all require non-invasive quantitative myelin imaging methods. To date, various myelin imaging techniques have been developed. Five different MRI approaches can be distinguished based on their biophysical principles: (i) imaging of the water between the lipid bilayers directly (e.g. myelin water imaging); (ii) imaging the non-aqueous protons of the phospholipid bilayer directly with ultra-short echo-time techniques; (iii) indirect imaging of the macromolecular content (e.g. magnetization transfer; inhomogeneous magnetization transfer); (iv) mapping of the effects of the myelin sheath’s magnetic susceptibility on the MRI signal (e.g. quantitative susceptibility mapping); and (v) mapping of the effects of the myelin sheath on water diffusion. Myelin imaging with PET uses radioactive molecules with high affinity to specific myelin components, in particular myelin basic protein. This review aims to give an overview of the various myelin imaging techniques, their biophysical principles, image acquisition, data analysis and their validation status.

There is a long history of adapting airborne sound insulation in buildings to the actual needs. A first pan-European work was published with COST Action TU0901: Integrating and Harmonizing Sound Insulation Aspects in Sustainable Urban Housing Constructions in which the differences between the sound insulation measure and the standard sound level difference were documented. Furthermore, ISO 16283-1: Field measurement of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements—Part 1: Airborne sound insulation states: Compared to DnT, R’ has a weaker connection to the subjective impression of airborne sound insulation. To investigate this relationship a simplified listening test and a computer-simulated variation studies of a synthesized airborne sound insulation were carried out. A test sound was generated from a speech, a music, and a noise signal, each of which was filtered by six frequency responses of solid structures. In a paired comparison task, 16 participants judged the loudness of the resulting 18 sounds. The results of the listening test show that perceived loudness is significantly correlated to the single number quantity DnT,w but less to the single number quantity R’w. This finding was confirmed across all signal types. Thus, the results confirm the statement in ISO 16283-1, that the single number quantity DnT,w has a stronger connection to the subjective impression of airborne sound insulation as the quantity R’w.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has impacted life in many ways, one change being the use of face masks. Their effect on MRI-based measurements of cerebral oxygen levels with quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) is not known.This study investigated whether wearing a face mask leads to changes in CBF and cerebral venous oxygen saturation measured with MRI.Repeated-measures cohort study.A total of 16 healthy volunteers (eight male, eight female; 22-36 years) were recruited for the 3-ply study. Ten of the 16 participants (five male, five female; 23-36 years) took part in the KN95 study.A 3 T, single-delay 3D gradient-and spin-echo pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL) scan for CBF quantification, and gradient-echo for QSM and oxygenation quantification.Gray matter CBF and magnetic susceptibility were assessed by masking the pCASL CBF map and the QSM map to the TPaired Student's t-tests and Cohen's d effect sizes were used to compare the face mask and no face mask scans for gray matter CBF, gray matter magnetic susceptibility, and cerebral venous oxygen saturation. Standard t-tests were used to assess whether the order of scanning with and without a mask had any impact. A statistical cut off of P 0.05 was used.The 3-ply masks increased gray matter CBF from an average of 43.99 mL/(100 g*min) to 46.81 mL/(100 g*min). There were no significant changes in gray matter magnetic susceptibility (P = 0.07), or cerebral venous oxygen saturation (P = 0.36) for the 3-ply data set. The KN95 masks data set showed no statistically significant changes in gray matter CBF (P = 0.52) and magnetic susceptibility (P = 0.97), or cerebral venous oxygen saturation (P = 0.93).The changes in blood flow and oxygenation due to face masks are small. This article discusses experimental forms of collaborative filmmaking in education and introduces the pedagogical concept of Chained Animation. Animation filmmaking usually involves teamwork; production pipelines are traditionally linear and hierarchically structured, separated into direction (or artistic direction) and production teams. By contrast, Chained Animations are non-linear and based on a large group of animators working together at various levels. This concept is particularly well suited to education as it integrates all participants equally, from the idea phase all the way through to its realization. In addition to teaching basic animation principles, this experimental form of education goes beyond established methods of practising those principles. The educational concepts for Chained Animations follow different strategies and range from professional workflows to playful, experimental forms that emphasize participatory and collaborative aspects within large groups. In this article, the authors first examine participatory art practices; then they discuss experimental forms of collaboration in animation and education, using examples from art, film and science. This article examines different experimental approaches, challenges and findings, which are based on three case studies undertaken at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Hagenberg Campus – Home (2016), Utopia Now (2017) and Draft One (2018) – ultimately presenting guidelines for Chained Animation in education.

The equity-efficiency trade-off and cumulative return theories predict larger returns to school spending in areas with higher previous investment in children. Equity—not efficiency—is therefore used to justify progressive school funding: spending more in communities with fewer financial resources. Yet it remains unclear how returns to school spending vary across areas by previous investment. Using county-level panel data for 2009–18 from the Stanford Education Data Archive, the Census Finance Survey, and National Vital Statistics, the authors estimate achievement returns to school spending and test whether returns vary between counties with low and high levels of initial human capital (measured as birth weight), child poverty, and previous spending. Spending returns are higher among counties with low previous investment (counties that also have a high percentage of Black students). Evidence of diminishing returns by previous investment documents another way that schools increase equality and establishes another argument for progressive school funding: efficiency.

Cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) are photoreceptors consisting of single or tandem GAF (cGMP-phosphodiesterase/adenylate cyclase/FhlA) domains that bind bilin chromophores. Canonical red/green CBCR GAF domains are a well-characterized subgroup of the expanded red/green CBCR GAF domain family that binds phycocyanobilin (PCB) and converts between a thermally stable red-absorbing Pr state and a green-absorbing Pg state. The rate of thermal reversion from Pg to Pr varies widely among canonical red/green CBCR GAF domains, with half-lives ranging from days to seconds. Since the thermal reversion rate is an important parameter for the application of CBCR GAF domains as optogenetic tools, the molecular factors controlling the thermal reversion rate are of particular interest. Here, we report that point mutations in a well-conserved W(S/G)GE motif alter reversion rates in canonical red/green CBCR GAF domains in a predictable manner. Specifically, S-to-G mutations enhance thermal reversion rates, while the reverse, G-to-S mutations slow thermal reversion. Despite the distance (10 Å) of the mutation site from the chromophore, molecular dynamics simulations and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses suggest that the presence of a glycine residue allows the formation of a water bridge that alters the conformational dynamics of chromophore-interacting residues, leading to enhanced Pg to Pr thermal reversion.

A legfontosabb feladatuk a gyógyítás, amit különböző vészhelyzetekben is folytonosan biztosítani szükséges. Emiatt fontos kérdés, hogy a kórházakban milyen külső és belső veszélyforrások merülnek fel kockázatként és azok milyen védelmi megoldásokkal csökkenthetők. A két részből álló cikksorozat 2. részében a korábban feltárt kockázati tényezők típusai, jellemzői alapján nemzetközi ajánlások és saját tapasztalatok alapján meghatározzuk, hogy azok elkerülhetők-e, és ha igen, akkor milyen megelőző biztonsági kialakítással vagy tevékenységgel csökkenthetők a kockázataik és a hatásuk. A kutatásunk alapján kijelenthető, hogy a kórházakat fenyegető veszélyek teljes mértékben nem kerülhetők el, azonban biztonsági intézkedésekkel csökkenthetők a kockázatok. A cikksorozatban feltártuk a kórházakat érintő speciális kockázati tényezőket, és javaslatot adtunk azok lehetséges csökkentésére vagy elkerülésére. Fontos tényező azonban, hogy minden egyes intézmény egyedi funkcióval és kialakítással rendelkezik, így az általános útmutatás mellett mindig szükséges az egyedi elemzések elkészítése és a szükséges megelőző tevékenységek meghatározása. Ezekkel jelentősen növelhető az egészségügyi intézmények, különösen a kórházak működődési biztonsága, ami egyben kihatással van azok gazdasági és társadalmi megítélésére is.

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. In this paper, we summarize the in-orbit performance of NIRSpec, as derived from data collected during its commissioning campaign and the first few months of nominal science operations. More specifically, we discuss the performance of some critical hardware components such as the two NIRSpec Hawaii-2RG (H2RG) detectors, wheel mechanisms, and the micro-shutter array. We also summarize the accuracy of the two target acquisition procedures used to accurately place science targets into the slit apertures, discuss the current status of the spectro-photometric and wavelength calibration of NIRSpec spectra, and provide the as measured sensitivity in all NIRSpec science modes. Finally, we point out a few important considerations for the preparation of NIRSpec science programs., accepted by PASP for special issue on JWST in-orbit performance

Background An unmet medical need remains for an effective dengue tetravalent vaccine that can be administered irrespective of previous dengue exposure. TAK-003, a dengue tetravalent vaccine, has demonstrated efficacy in an ongoing phase 3 trial in children and adolescents living in dengue-endemic areas, with an acceptable safety profile in both dengue-naive and dengue-exposed individuals. Methods Safety findings are presented herein from an integrated analysis of data for healthy 4–60-year-olds from two phase 2 and three phase 3 double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials of TAK-003 (TAK-003, n = 14 627; placebo, n = 7167). Safety evaluation included analyses of postinjection reactogenicity, unsolicited adverse events (AEs), serious AEs (SAEs), and deaths. Subgroup analyses were performed by age group, baseline serostatus, and gender. Results The most common local and systemic AEs were injection site pain (43% for TAK-003 and 26% for placebo) and headache (34% and 30%, respectively). Injection site AEs were mostly mild and resolved within 1–3 days. Unsolicited AEs and AEs leading to discontinuation occurred with similar frequency across both groups, while SAEs were fewer for TAK-003 recipients (6% vs 8% for placebo). Four of the 5 vaccine-related SAEs (which included hypersensitivity, dengue fever, and dengue hemorrhagic fever) occurred in the placebo group. No deaths were considered vaccine-related. Subgroup analyses showed no differences in safety by baseline serostatus or by gender, albeit analysis by age indicated greater local reactogenicity rates for adolescents (46% for TAK-003 and 28% for placebo) and adults (56% and 19%, respectively) than for children (37% and 25%, respectively). Conclusions No important safety risks were identified, and TAK-003 was well tolerated irrespective of age, gender, or baseline dengue serostatus in recipients aged 4–60 years.

Infant sex ratios that differ from the biological norm provide a measure of gender status inequality that is not susceptible to social desirability bias. Ratios may become less biased with educational expansion through reduced preference for male children. Alternatively, bias could increase with education through more access to sex-selective medical technologies. Using National Vital Statistics data on the population of live births in the United States for 1969–2018, we examine trends in infant sex ratios by parental race/ethnicity, education, and birth parity over five decades. We find son-biased infant sex ratios among Chinese and Asian Indian births that have persisted in recent years, and regressions suggest son-biased ratios among births to Filipino and Japanese mothers with less than a high school education. Infant sex ratios are more balanced at higher levels of maternal education, particularly when both parents are college educated. Results suggest greater equality of gender status with higher education in the United States.

Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and Hispanic patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have higher mortality rates than non-Hispanic White (NHW) patients despite more favorable genetics and younger age. A discrete survival analysis was performed on 822 adult patients with AML from 6 urban cancer centers and revealed inferior survival among NHB (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.59; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.15, 2.22) and Hispanic (HR = 1.25; 95% CI: 0.88, 1.79) patients compared with NHW patients. A multilevel analysis of disparities was then conducted to investigate the contribution of neighborhood measures of structural racism on racial/ethnic differences in survival. Census tract disadvantage and affluence scores were individually calculated. Mediation analysis of hazard of leukemia death between groups was examined across 6 composite variables: structural racism (census tract disadvantage, affluence, and segregation), tumor biology (European Leukemia Network risk and secondary leukemia), health care access (insurance and clinical trial enrollment), comorbidities, treatment patterns (induction intensity and transplant utilization), and intensive care unit (ICU) admission during induction chemotherapy. Strikingly, census tract measures accounted for nearly all of the NHB-NHW and Hispanic-NHW disparity in leukemia death. Treatment patterns, including induction intensity and allogeneic transplant, and treatment complications, as assessed by ICU admission during induction chemotherapy, were additional mediators of survival disparities in AML. This is the first study to formally test mediators for observed disparities in AML survival and highlights the need to investigate the mechanisms by which structural racism interacts with known prognostic and treatment factors to influence leukemia outcomes.

This bicentric, retrospective analysis investigated the efficacy of PET/CT with a novel theranostic prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)--targeting ligand, (18)F-rhPSMA-7, in patients with biochemical recurrence (BCR) of prostate cancer after curative-intent primary radiotherapy. Methods: Datasets from patients with BCR of prostate cancer after external-beam radiation therapy or brachytherapy who underwent (18)F-rhPSMA-7 PET/CT at either Technical University Munich or Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich were retrospectively reviewed by experienced nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists at both centers. The median injected activity was 299 MBq (range, 204–420 MBq), and the median uptake time was 77 min (range, 46–120 min). All lesions suggestive of recurrent prostate cancer were noted. Detection rates were correlated with patients’ prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, primary Gleason score, and prior use of androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT). Results: Ninety-seven patients were included (65 at Technical University Munich and 32 at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich). The median prescan PSA was 4.19 ng/mL (range, 0.1–159 ng/mL). The primary Gleason score was ≤6 in 19 patients, 7 in 25, ≥8 in 33, and unknown in 20. Thirty patients received ADT in the 6 mo preceding PET/CT. Close-in giant exoplanets with temperatures greater than 2,000 K (''ultra-hot Jupiters'') have been the subject of extensive efforts to determine their atmospheric properties using thermal emission measurements from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. However, previous studies have yielded inconsistent results because the small sizes of the spectral features and the limited information content of the data resulted in high sensitivity to the varying assumptions made in the treatment of instrument systematics and the atmospheric retrieval analysis. Here we present a dayside thermal emission spectrum of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-18b obtained with the NIRISS instrument on JWST. The data span 0.85 to 2.85 $\mu$m in wavelength at an average resolving power of 400 and exhibit minimal systematics. The spectrum shows three water emission features (at $>$6$\sigma$ confidence) and evidence for optical opacity, possibly due to H$^-$, TiO, and VO (combined significance of 3.8$\sigma$). Models that fit the data require a thermal inversion, molecular dissociation as predicted by chemical equilibrium, a solar heavy element abundance (''metallicity'', M/H = 1.03$_{-0.51}^{+1.11}$ $\times$ solar), and a carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio less than unity. The data also yield a dayside brightness temperature map, which shows a peak in temperature near the sub-stellar point that decreases steeply and symmetrically with longitude toward the terminators., Comment: JWST ERS bright star observations. Our knowledge of stellar evolution is driven by one-dimensional (1D) simulations. 1D models, however, are severely limited by uncertainties on the exact behaviour of many multi-dimensional phenomena occurring inside stars, affecting their structure and evolution. Recent advances in computing resources have allowed small sections of a star to be reproduced with multi-D hydrodynamic models, with an unprecedented degree of detail and realism. In this work, we present a set of 3D simulations of a convective neon-burning shell in a 20 M$_\odot$ star run for the first time continuously from its early development through to complete fuel exhaustion, using unaltered input conditions from a 321D-guided 1D stellar model. These simulations help answer some open questions in stellar physics. In particular, they show that convective regions do not grow indefinitely due to entrainment of fresh material, but fuel consumption prevails over entrainment, so when fuel is exhausted convection also starts decaying. Our results show convergence between the multi-D simulations and the new 321D-guided 1D model, concerning the amount of convective boundary mixing to include in stellar models. The size of the convective zones in a star strongly affects its structure and evolution, thus revising their modelling in 1D will have important implications for the life and fate of stars. This will thus affect theoretical predictions related to nucleosynthesis, supernova explosions and compact remnants., 12 pages, 15 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Purpose: To investigate the association of commonly used systemic medications with glaucoma and intraocular pressure (IOP) in the European population. Design: Meta-analysis of eleven population-based cohort studies of the European Eye Epidemiology (E3) consortium. Participants: A total of 143240 participants were included in the glaucoma analyses and 47177 participants in the IOP analyses. Methods: We examined associations of four categories of systemic medications (antihypertensive medications: beta-blockers, diuretics, calcium channel blockers [CCBs], alpha-agonists, angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers; lipid-lowering medications; antidepressants; antidiabetic medications) with glaucoma prevalence and IOP. Glaucoma ascertainment and IOP measurement method were according to individual study protocols. Multivariable regression analyses were carried out in each study and results were pooled using random effects meta-analyses. Associations with antidiabetic medications were examined in diabetic participants only. Main Outcome Measures: Glaucoma prevalence and IOP. Results: In the meta-analyses of our maximally-adjusted multivariable models, use of CCBs was associated with a higher prevalence of glaucoma (odds ratio [OR] with corresponding 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.23 [1.08 to 1.39]). This association was stronger for monotherapy of CCBs with direct cardiac effects (OR [95% CI]: 1.96 [1.23 to 3.12]). The use of other antihypertensive medications, lipid-lowering medications, antidepressants or antidiabetic medications were not clearly associated with glaucoma. Use of systemic beta-blockers was associated with a lower IOP (Beta [95% CI]: -0.33 [-0.57 to -0.08] mmHg). Monotherapy of both selective (Beta [95% CI]: -0.45 [-0.74 to -0.16] mmHg) and non-selective (Beta [95% CI]: -0.54 [-0.94 to -0.15] mmHg) systemic beta-blockers was associated with lower IOP. There was a suggestive association between use of high-ceiling diuretics and lower IOP (Beta [95% CI]: -0.30 [-0.47; -0.14] mmHg), but not when used as monotherapy. Use of other antihypertensive medications, lipid-lowering medications, antidepressants, or antidiabetic medications were not associated with IOP. Conclusions: We identified a potentially harmful association between use of CCBs and glaucoma prevalence. Additionally, we observed and quantified the association of lower IOP with systemic beta-blocker use. Both findings are potentially important given that glaucoma patients frequently use systemic antihypertensive medications. Determining whether the CCB association is causal should be a research priority. published

A systematic literature search of major databases was conducted on human studies investigating the diagnostic accuracy of TTE for proximal aortic dissection. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The quality of studies was evaluated using Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 tool. Data were gathered for the following sonographic findings: intimal flap, tear, or intramural hematoma; enlargement of aortic root or widening of aortic walls; aortic valve regurgitation; or pericardial effusion. Sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio, number needed to diagnose values, and likelihood ratios were determined. Fourteen studies were included in our final analysis. More than half of the included studies demonstrated low risk of bias. The identification of intimal flap, tear, or intramural hematoma was shown to have an exceptional ability as a diagnostic tool to rule in proximal aortic dissections. TTE should be considered during the initial evaluation of patients presenting to the emergency department with suspected proximal aortic dissection. Positive sonographic findings on TTE may aid in rapid assessment, coordination of care, and treatment of individuals awaiting advanced imaging.
