Search

Evidence for a low-frequency stochastic gravitational wave background has recently been reported based on analyses of pulsar timing array data. The most likely source of such a background is a population of supermassive black hole binaries, the loudest of which may be individually detected in these datasets. Here we present the search for individual supermassive black hole binaries in the NANOGrav 15-year dataset. We introduce several new techniques, which enhance the efficiency and modeling accuracy of the analysis. The search uncovered weak evidence for two candidate signals, one with a gravitational-wave frequency of $\sim$4 nHz, and another at $\sim$170 nHz. The significance of the low-frequency candidate was greatly diminished when Hellings-Downs correlations were included in the background model. The high-frequency candidate was discounted due to the lack of a plausible host galaxy, the unlikely astrophysical prior odds of finding such a source, and since most of its support comes from a single pulsar with a commensurate binary period. Finding no compelling evidence for signals from individual binary systems, we place upper limits on the strain amplitude of gravitational waves emitted by such systems., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. This paper presents rigorous tests of pulsar timing array methods and software, examining their consistency across a wide range of injected parameters and signal strength. We discuss updates to the 15-year isotropic gravitational-wave background analyses and their corresponding code representations. Descriptions of the internal structure of the flagship algorithms \texttt{Enterprise} and \texttt{PTMCMCSampler} are given to facilitate understanding of the PTA likelihood structure, how models are built, and what methods are currently used in sampling the high-dimensional PTA parameter space. We introduce a novel version of the PTA likelihood that uses a two-step marginalization procedure that performs much faster when the white noise parameters remain fixed. We perform stringent tests of consistency and correctness of the Bayesian and frequentist analysis software. For the Bayesian analysis, we test prior recovery, injection recovery, and Bayes factors. For the frequentist analysis, we test that the cross-correlation-based optimal statistic, when modified to account for a non-negligible gravitational-wave background, accurately recovers the amplitude of the background. We also summarize recent advances and tests performed on the optimal statistic in the literature from both GWB detection and parameter estimation perspectives. Following the discovery of radio pulsars at the position of Fermi-LAT unassociated sources by the TRAPUM group, we conduct Swift-XRT observations of six of those 4FGL sources to determine if any pulsar-like X-ray sources are present and to confirm the reported detection of an X-ray counterpart via eROSITA at 4FGL J1803.1-6708. At two of the six targets, we detect no X-ray sources at the TRAPUM radio position, placing an upper limit on the 0.3-10.0 keV flux. At 4FGL J1803.1-6708 we find an X-ray source at the TRAPUM and eROSITA position. At 4FGL J1858.3-5424 we find a new X-ray counterpart at the TRAPUM position with S/N=4.17, but also detect a distinct and separate X-ray source. At 4FGL J1823.8-3544 and 4FGL J1906.4-1757 we detect no X-ray flux at the TRAPUM positions, but we do detect separate X-ray sources elsewhere in the Fermi error ellipse. At these last two targets, our newly detected Swift sources are possible alternatives to the radio pulsar associations proposed by TRAPUM. The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) has reported evidence for the presence of an isotropic nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB) in its 15 yr dataset. However, if the GWB is produced by a population of inspiraling supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) systems, then the background is predicted to be anisotropic, depending on the distribution of these systems in the local Universe and the statistical properties of the SMBHB population. In this work, we search for anisotropy in the GWB using multiple methods and bases to describe the distribution of the GWB power on the sky. We do not find significant evidence of anisotropy, and place a Bayesian $95\%$ upper limit on the level of broadband anisotropy such that $(C_{l>0} / C_{l=0}) < 20\%$. We also derive conservative estimates on the anisotropy expected from a random distribution of SMBHB systems using astrophysical simulations conditioned on the isotropic GWB inferred in the 15-yr dataset, and show that this dataset has sufficient sensitivity to probe a large fraction of the predicted level of anisotropy. The NANOGrav 15-year data set shows evidence for the presence of a low-frequency gravitational-wave background (GWB). While many physical processes can source such low-frequency gravitational waves, here we analyze the signal as coming from a population of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries distributed throughout the Universe. We show that astrophysically motivated models of SMBH binary populations are able to reproduce both the amplitude and shape of the observed low-frequency gravitational-wave spectrum. While multiple model variations are able to reproduce the GWB spectrum at our current measurement precision, our results highlight the importance of accurately modeling binary evolution for producing realistic GWB spectra. Additionally, while reasonable parameters are able to reproduce the 15-year observations, the implied GWB amplitude necessitates either a large number of parameters to be at the edges of expected values, or a small number of parameters to be notably different from standard expectations. While we are not yet able to definitively establish the origin of the inferred GWB signal, the consistency of the signal with astrophysical expectations offers a tantalizing prospect for confirming that SMBH binaries are able to form, reach sub-parsec separations, and eventually coalesce. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are galactic-scale gravitational wave detectors. Each individual arm, composed of a millisecond pulsar, a radio telescope, and a kiloparsecs-long path, differs in its properties but, in aggregate, can be used to extract low-frequency gravitational wave (GW) signals. We present a noise and sensitivity analysis to accompany the NANOGrav 15-year data release and associated papers, along with an in-depth introduction to PTA noise models. As a first step in our analysis, we characterize each individual pulsar data set with three types of white noise parameters and two red noise parameters. These parameters, along with the timing model and, particularly, a piecewise-constant model for the time-variable dispersion measure, determine the sensitivity curve over the low-frequency GW band we are searching. We tabulate information for all of the pulsars in this data release and present some representative sensitivity curves. We then combine the individual pulsar sensitivities using a signal-to-noise-ratio statistic to calculate the global sensitivity of the PTA to a stochastic background of GWs, obtaining a minimum noise characteristic strain of $7\times 10^{-15}$ at 5 nHz. A power law-integrated analysis shows rough agreement with the amplitudes recovered in NANOGrav's 15-year GW background analysis. The 15-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) shows positive evidence for the presence of a low-frequency gravitational-wave (GW) background. In this paper, we investigate potential cosmological interpretations of this signal, specifically cosmic inflation, scalar-induced GWs, first-order phase transitions, cosmic strings, and domain walls. We find that, with the exception of stable cosmic strings of field theory origin, all these models can reproduce the observed signal. When compared to the standard interpretation in terms of inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), many cosmological models seem to provide a better fit resulting in Bayes factors in the range from 10 to 100. However, these results strongly depend on modeling assumptions about the cosmic SMBHB population and, at this stage, should not be regarded as evidence for new physics. Furthermore, we identify excluded parameter regions where the predicted GW signal from cosmological sources significantly exceeds the NANOGrav signal. These parameter constraints are independent of the origin of the NANOGrav signal and illustrate how pulsar timing data provide a new way to constrain the parameter space of these models. Finally, we search for deterministic signals produced by models of ultralight dark matter (ULDM) and dark matter substructures in the Milky Way. We find no evidence for either of these signals and thus report updated constraints on these models. O software foi desenvolvido tanto para uso no computador e celular, para tópicos de dimensionamento em concreto armado de vigas de flexão normal simples, dimensionamento ao cisalhamento e dimensionamento de pilares. As características do software são: apresentar um resumo dos resultados e um roteiro de cálculo detalhado. In this work, the development of assistive software for the design of reinforced concrete elements according to NBR 6118: 2014 is presented, using the programming language C # and Xamarin, in order to improve the teaching-learning process. Considering that the teaching of reinforced concrete is important in the training of the Civil engineer. In addition, computers and cell phones are resources to promote the transfer of information and facilitate the process of building knowledge. The software was developed for both computer and mobile use, for reinforced concrete design topics for simple normal bending beams, shear design and column design. When galaxies merge, the supermassive black holes in their centers may form binaries and, during the process of merger, emit low-frequency gravitational radiation in the process. In this paper we consider the galaxy 3C66B, which was used as the target of the first multi-messenger search for gravitational waves. Due to the observed periodicities present in the photometric and astrometric data of the source of the source, it has been theorized to contain a supermassive black hole binary. Its apparent 1.05-year orbital period would place the gravitational wave emission directly in the pulsar timing band. Since the first pulsar timing array study of 3C66B, revised models of the source have been published, and timing array sensitivities and techniques have improved dramatically. With these advances, we further constrain the chirp mass of the potential supermassive black hole binary in 3C66B to less than $(1.65\pm0.02) \times 10^9~{M_\odot}$ using data from the NANOGrav 11-year data set. This upper limit provides a factor of 1.6 improvement over previous limits, and a factor of 4.3 over the first search done. Nevertheless, the most recent orbital model for the source is still consistent with our limit from pulsar timing array data. In addition, we are able to quantify the improvement made by the inclusion of source properties gleaned from electromagnetic data to `blind' pulsar timing array searches. With these methods, it is apparent that it is not necessary to obtain exact a priori knowledge of the period of a binary to gain meaningful astrophysical inferences., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) should form frequently in galactic nuclei as a result of galaxy mergers. At sub-parsec separations, binaries become strong sources of low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs), targeted by Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs). We used recent upper limits on continuous GWs from the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) 11yr dataset to place constraints on putative SMBHBs in nearby massive galaxies. We compiled a comprehensive catalog of ~44,000 galaxies in the local universe (up to redshift ~0.05) and populated them with hypothetical binaries, assuming that the total mass of the binary is equal to the SMBH mass derived from global scaling relations. Assuming circular equal-mass binaries emitting at NANOGrav's most sensitive frequency of 8nHz, we found that 216 galaxies are within NANOGrav's sensitivity volume. We ranked the potential SMBHBs based on GW detectability by calculating the total signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) such binaries would induce within the NANOGrav array. We placed constraints on the chirp mass and mass ratio of the 216 hypothetical binaries. For 19 galaxies, only very unequal-mass binaries are allowed, with the mass of the secondary less than 10 percent that of the primary, roughly comparable to constraints on a SMBHB in the Milky Way. Additionally, we were able to exclude binaries delivered by major mergers (mass ratio of at least 1/4) for several of these galaxies. The industrial scale production of silicon carbide monofilaments by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) can be disrupted by growth anomalies that initiate filament fracture during its manufacture. The anomalies take the form of growth warts on the surface of the silicon carbide fibre. Complementary 3D imaging techniques, micro X-ray computed topography (XCT) and plasma focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (PFIB-SEM), in combination with other materials characterisation techniques (Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis) have been used to investigate the nature and cause of the anomalies. Metallic tungsten particulates with an unusual dendritic morphology attached to the tungsten core were found to be the origin of the anomalies. Further investigation of the CVD system led to the observation of process-induced W oxide particulate agglomerates accumulating at the cleaning stage inlet to the reactor. These particulates became attached to tungsten wire in the cleaning stage of the CVD reactor and were rapidly reduced to elemental tungsten prior to entering the silicon carbide deposition chamber. Silicon carbide growth on the tungsten particulates results in the development of a wart-like morphology on the fibre surface. An understanding of this mechanism enabled minor modifications to reactor conditions, which prevented W oxide particulate formation and greatly reduced the occurrence of such growth anomalies.

The Station Explorer for X-ray Timing and Navigation Technology (SEXTANT) is a technology demonstration enhancement to the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2017 and will be hosted as an externally attached payload on the International Space Station (ISS). During NICER's 18-month baseline science mission to understand ultra-dense matter through observations of neutron stars in the soft X-ray band, SEXTANT will, for the first-time, demonstrate real-time, on-board X-ray pulsar navigation. Using NICER/SEXTANT as an example, we describe the factors that determine the measurement errors on pulse times of arrival, including source and background count rates, and pulse profile shapes. We then describe properties of the SEXTANT navigation pulsar catalog and prospects for growing it once NICER launches. Finally, we describe the factors affecting the prediction of pulse arrival times in advance, including variable interstellar propagation effect and red timing noise. As part of ongoing research in the UK, TISICS have developed an improved 140 µm carbon coated silicon carbide monofilament for the reinforcement of metal matrix composites. The monofilament is fabricated in a single reactor using a high speed chemical vapor deposition process at a rate of 8 m/min (26 ft/min). Statistical analysis of monofilament properties over two years of production has demonstrated excellent reproducibility of the process. The monofilaments have an average tensile strength of 4.0 ± 0.2 GPa with a Weibull modulus of 50 ± 10. Composites incorporating the monofilaments show similar low variability in yield and tensile strength with the latter exhibiting a mean value above 90% of the maximum theoretical strength predicted by the rule of mixtures. By varying the volume fraction and orientation of the monofilament reinforcement, composite properties can be tailored to fit design requirements. Examples are given of demonstrator components made for the European aerospace sector.

In 2012, five high school students involved in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory discovered the millisecond pulsar PSR J1400$-$1431 and initial timing parameters were published in Rosen et al. (2013) a year later. Since then, we have obtained a phase-connected timing solution spanning five years, resolving a significant position discrepancy and measuring $\dot{P}$, proper motion, parallax, and a monotonic slope in dispersion measure over time. Due to PSR J1400$-$1431's proximity and significant proper motion, we use the Shklovskii effect and other priors to determine a 95% confidence interval for PSR J1400$-$1431's distance, $d=270^{+130}_{-80}$ pc. With an improved timing position, we present the first detection of the pulsar's low-mass white dwarf (WD) companion using the Goodman Spectrograph on the 4.1-m SOAR telescope. Deeper imaging suggests that it is a cool DA-type WD with $T_{\rm eff}=3000\pm100$ K and $R/R_\odot=(2.19\pm0.03)\times10^{-2}\,(d/270\,{\rm pc})$. We show a convincing association between PSR J1400$-$1431 and a $��$-ray point source, 3FGL J1400.5$-$1437, but only weak (3.3-$��$) evidence of pulsations after folding $��$-ray photons using our radio timing model. We detect an X-ray counterpart with XMM-Newton but the measured X-ray luminosity ($1\times10^{29}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) makes PSR J1400$-$1431 the least X-ray luminous rotation-powered millisecond pulsar (MSP) detected to date. Together, our findings present a consistent picture of a nearby ($d\approx230$ pc) MSP in a 9.5-day orbit around a cool, $\sim$0.3 M$_\odot$ WD companion, with orbital inclination, $i\gtrsim60^\circ$., 13 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: I investigate epistemic limits intrinsic to the analytic method of philosophizing used by Michael Rea (Analytic Theology) and Eleonore Stump (Wandering in Darkness). Rea claims analytic tools limited strictly to the purposes of theory building make analytic accounts “advantageously unsuited to deal with the reality of evil.” Rea's interpretation is conceptually distortive and problematic. I show how his use of the logical-practical distinction is unauthentic in dealing with the challenge of tragic evil and present a broad sketch of what I mean by “tragic.” I then elucidate how Rea abuses the epistemic limits of his method by misaiming analytic tools inasmuch as philosophical doubt cuts against any knowledge garnered in the epistemic practices of human beings experiencing evil. I lastly show that Rea's epistemic problems amplify in the theodicy defence of Stump, who uses an artificial construction of evil as suffering of “mentally fully functioning adults” shorn of any socio-historical location. While Stump's artifice of evil and epistemic doubt provides her the possibility for a general reason of moral sufficiency, she is unable to integrate the biblical narratives she expects will lend added epistemic assistance to her defence, so that her project ultimately founders by never really touching ground.

Socioeconomic needs combined with technological advances are creating a demand for an increasing number of systems for which high-assurance is an essential attribute. These system designs, which increasingly include semantic computing components, span a broad spectrum of applications. They are incredibly diverse and their complexity is growing. The conditions under which these systems operate are such that system faults will occur and must be comprehensively accounted for in the systems' designs. This article investigates the landscape of high-assurance systems, the challenges these systems face, and what must be done to address those challenges. Challenges include societal needs, scientific frontiers, dynamics of technological evolution, and drivers of current research models.

Current Web services testing techniques are unable to assure the desired level of trustworthiness, which presents a barrier to WS applications in mission and business critical environments. This paper presents a framework that assures the trustworthiness of Web services. New assurance techniques are developed within the framework, including specification verification via completeness and consistency checking, test case generation, and automated Web services testing. Traditional test case generation methods only generate positive test cases that verify the functionality of software. The proposed Swiss Cheese test case generation method is designed to generate both positive and negative test cases that also reveal the vulnerability of Web services. This integrated development process is implemented in a case study. The experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach. It also reveals that the Swiss Cheese negative testing detects even more faults than positive testing and thus significantly reduces the vulnerability of Web services.

In this paper we identify and discuss issues that are relevant to the design and usage of databases handling massive amounts of data in parallel environments. The issues that are tackled include the placement of the data in the memory, file systems, concurrent access to data, effects on query processing, and the implications of specific machine architectures. Since not all parameters are tractable in rigorous analysis, results of performance and bench-marking studies are highlighted for several systems.

Systems change often, and each change requires reverification and revalidation. Modern software development processes such as agile process even welcome and accommodate frequent software changes. Traditionally, software reverification and revalidation are handled by regression testing. This chapter presents a pattern-oriented scenario-based approach to rapidly reverify and revalidate frequently changed software. Key features of this approach are (1) classifying system scenarios into reusable patterns; (2) application of a formal completeness analysis to identify missing scenarios; (3) identifying scenario patterns (SPs) and corresponding verification patterns (VPs) and robustness patterns (RBPs); (4) rapid test script generation by reusing test script templates. This approach is also compatible with formal approaches such as model checking. This approach has been used at industrial sites to test safety-critical medical devices with significant savings in cost and effort. The chapter presents several examples to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of this approach.

LS I +61 303 is an exceptionally rare example of a high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) that also exhibits MeV-TeV emission, making it one of only a handful of "gamma-ray binaries". Here we present H-alpha spectra that show strong variability during the 26.5 day orbital period and over decadal time scales. We detect evidence of a spiral density wave in the Be circumstellar disk over part of the orbit. The H-alpha line profile also exhibits a dramatic emission burst shortly before apastron, observed as a redshifted shoulder in the line profile, as the compact source moves almost directly away from the observer. We investigate several possible origins for this red shoulder, including an accretion disk, mass transfer stream, and a compact pulsar wind nebula that forms via a shock between the Be star's wind and the relativistic pulsar wind., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

It bridges, and integrates, technologies such as software engineering, user interface, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, programming language, grid computing and pervasive computing, among others, into a complete and unified theme. Cloud Computing, the dream of computing as a utility, shifts user programs and data from personal computers to the clouds, providing all kinds of resources over the Internet as services to customers and letting customers pay for them in a way much like they pay for traditional utilities such as electricity. This paper analyzes both Semantic Computing and Cloud Computing, and introduces the Semantic Search Engine, an infrastructure and implementation of Semantic Computing, that demonstrates how Semantic Computing can benefit Cloud Computing.

GCRT J1745-3009 is a transient bursting radio source located in the direction of the Galactic center, discovered in 330 MHz VLA observations from 2002 September 30--October 1 by Hyman et al. We have searched for bursting activity from GCRT J1745-3009 in nearly all of the available 330 MHz VLA observations of the Galactic center since 1989 as well as in 2003 GMRT observations. We report a new radio detection of the source in 330 MHz GMRT data taken on 2003 September 28. A single ~0.5 Jy burst was detected, approximately 3x weaker than the five bursts detected in 2002. Due to the sparse sampling of the 2003 observation, only the decay portion of a single burst was detected. We present additional evidence indicating that this burst is an isolated one, but we cannot completely rule out additional undetected bursts that may have occured with the same ~77 min. periodicity observed in 2002 or with a different periodicity. Assuming the peak emission was detected, the decay time of the burst, ~2 min, is consistent with that determined for the 2002 bursts. As part of a large-scale search for coherent pulsations from LMXBs in the RXTE archive, we have completed a detailed series of searches for coherent pulsations of 4U 1820-30 -- an ultracompact LMXB with a binary period of 11.4 min, located in the globular cluster NGC6624. The short binary period implies any coherent signal would be highly accelerated, so we used phase modulation searches, orbital-parameter-fitting coherent searches, and standard acceleration searches to give significant sensitivity to millisecond pulsations. We searched, in four energy bands and at a range of luminosities, a total of 34 archival RXTE observations, 32 of which had on-source integration times longer than 10 ks, and some of which were made consecutively which allowed us to combine them. We found no pulsations. At the unit testing level, the WS with the same functionality are tested in group using progressively increasing number of test cases. A small number of WS that scored best will be integrated into the real environment for operational testing. At the integration testing level, many composite services will be constructed and tested by group integration testing. The results of group testing at both unit and integration levels are verified by weighted majority voting mechanisms. The weights are based on the reliability history of the WS under test. A case study is designed and implemented, where the dependency among the test cases in WS is analyzed and used to generate progressive layers of test cases.

The concept of software architecture has recently emerged as a new way to improve our ability to effectively construct large scale software systems. However, there is no formal architecture specification language available to model and analyze temporal properties of complex real-time systems. In this paper, an object-oriented logic-based architecture specification language for real-time systems is discussed. Representation of the temporal properties and timing constraints, and their integration with the language to model real-time concurrent systems is given. Architecture based specification languages enable the construction of large system architectures and provide a means of testing and validation. In general, checking the timing constraints of real-time systems is done by applying model checking to the constraint expressed as a formula in temporal logic. The complexity of such a formal method depends on the size of the representation of the system. It is possible that this size could increase exponentially when the system consists of several concurrently executing real-time processes. This means that the complexity of the algorithm will be exponential in the number of processes of the system and thus the size of the system becomes a limiting factor. Such a problem has been defined in the literature as "state explosion problem". We propose a method of incremental verification of architectural specifications for real-time systems. The method has a lower complexity in a sense that it does not work on the whole state space, but only on a subset of it that is relevant to the property to be verified.

A shortage of donor liver grafts unfortunately results in approximately 10% of patients dying whilst listed for a liver transplant in Europe and the United States. Thus it is imperative that all available organs are used as efficiently as possible. This paper reports upon the application of a simulation modelling approach to assess the impact of several alternative allocation policies upon the cost effectiveness of this technology at one liver transplant centre in the UK. The impact of changes in allocation criteria on the estimated net life expectancy, average net costs and overall cost effectiveness of the transplantation programme were evaluated. The incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER) for the base case allocation policy, based upon the time spent on the waiting list (i.e., longest wait first) was 11,557 pounds sterling at 1999 prices. The ICERs associated with an allocation policy based upon age (lowest age first), and an allocation policy based upon the severity of the pre-transplant condition of the patient (with most severely ill patients given a lower priority) were lower than the base case at 10,424 pounds sterling and 9,077 pounds sterling, respectively. The results of this modelling study suggest that the overall cost effectiveness of the liver transplantation programme could be improved if the current allocation policy were modified to give more weight to the age of the patient and the reduced chances of success of the most severely ill patients.

Scopolamine (1.5 mg/kg; i.p.) or amphetamine (3 mg/kg; i.p.) increases locomotion and stereotyped behavior patterns in rats. Previous studies suggest that scopolamine acts via muscarinic receptors near the midbrain-pons border. In this study, unilateral microinjections in N-methyl-scopolamine (2.5-10 microg) into the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT) increased locomotion. Bilateral ibotenate lesions of the LDT attenuated scopolamine-induced locomotion by 68% 7 days postlesion, and by 35% 28 days postlesion. LDT lesions reduced scopolamine-induced stereotypy less than locomotion. The sensitization to amphetamine observed on repeated tests was attenuated by LDT lesions for stereotypy, but not for locomotion. These findings suggest that scopolamine induces locomotion largely, but not exclusively, by blocking muscarinic receptors in LDT.

As part of a large-scale search for coherent pulsations from LMXBs in the RXTE archive, we have completed a detailed series of searches for coherent pulsations of 4U 1820-30 -- an ultracompact LMXB with a binary period of 11.4 min, located in the globular cluster NGC6624. The short binary period implies any coherent signal would be highly accelerated, so we used phase modulation searches, orbital-parameter-fitting coherent searches, and standard acceleration searches to give significant sensitivity to millisecond pulsations. We searched, in four energy bands and at a range of luminosities, a total of 34 archival RXTE observations, 32 of which had on-source integration times longer than 10 ks, and some of which were made consecutively which allowed us to combine them. We found no pulsations. Using our phase modulation search technique, which we ran on all 34 observations, we have been able to place the first stringent (95% confidence) pulsed fraction limits of
