Objective: Veterans evaluated at the WRIISC present with multiple and chronic health conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pain, and fatigue. These patients often experience poor symptom relief. A pilot project was designed to determine whether such veterans would practice yoga as an adjunct to conventional medical care. We also used a range of standard screening measures to examine the health profile of individuals. Methods: Veterans were referred by VA clinicians to a WRIISC yoga clinic established in 2009. Two classes were offered per week. Veterans were assessed at baseline and after 12 classes with the PTSD Ch ecklist (PCL), Short F orm McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-12), and the Flinders Fatigue Scale (FFS). Results: There have been 293 patient referrals so far and more than 1,824 yoga contact hours. Detailed data were collected on 10 veterans age 53–85 yrs (6 males). The screening instruments revealed nonsignificant benefits of yoga across the classes (p > .05). Furthermore, the PCL scores showed that four patients (40%) screened positive for PTSD (mean severity score = 40.9, range = 18–70). In addition, the PCL showed positive correlations with measures of pain (FS-12; Spearman’s rho = .76, p < .01), and chronic fatigue (FFS; Spearman’s rho = .94, p < .001). Similar results were found for equivalent correlations after 12 yoga classes. Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrates that veterans accept yoga as a complementary treatment to their regular medical care. Of possible significance is the observation that 40% of the patients screened positive for PTSD. The reasons for this are not clear but may be because such patients were referred at a higher rate. It is also possible that PTSD patients seek out yoga classes as an effective means of treating their symptoms. The strong correlations between measures of PTSD, pain, and fatigue suggest far-reaching implications for the integration of yoga in the treatment of veterans with a broad array of disorders exacerbated by stress. 2. Yoga-based Psychotherapy Group With Urban Youth Exposed to Trauma

A model of collision-dominated space-charge sheaths is developed using the approximation of mobility-controlled ion motion. Results of numerical and asymptotic solutions are given. The asymptotic solution has exponential accuracy with respect to the ratio sheath voltage/electron temperature and provides for near-cathode sheaths results which can be considered as practically exact. On the basis of the asymptotic analysis, a simple exponential-accuracy analytical model of the ion layer is given. Voltage drops in different zones (the ionization layer, the ion-electron layer, and the ion layer) are identified. The voltage drop in the ion-electron layer is found to be quite close to kTe/e. Results of numerical integration for conditions typical for high-intensity discharge lamps are presented.

A laser Doppler anemometer combined with a particle-emission spectrometer, are used for the study of the induction plasma spraying process. For this, the effects of chamber pressure, spray distance and torch nozzle design on the particle surface temperature and velocity as well as the fraction of hot particles included in the stream of processed material, were investigated. A comparison between the velocity measurements by laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) and by the particle time-of-flight technique is presented in order to emphasize the deference between the velocity of the hot particles, and that of the total particle population, cold and hot. The influence of the individual particle mass on particle entrainment in the plasma jet from the ambient atmosphere in the vacuum chamber is discussed.

A method is presented for the simultaneous measurement, in flight, of the surface temperature and velocity of individual particles under plasma conditions. The method is based on the direct measurement of thermal radiation at two wavelengths emitted from the particle surface as they cross a well defined measurement volume within the plasma. A detailed description of the data treatment is presented for typical signals obtained. A simple method using each individual particle emission signal and the associated photomultiplier noise is used to estimate the minimum surface temperature that can be measured. Measurements have been carried out using alumina powder (dp=49 mu m, sigma =4 mu m) injected axially into an inductively coupled radiofrequency (RF) plasma operated using an Ar/H2 mixture at 20 kW and 250 Torr. Results of measurements at a distance of 188 mm from the tip of the injection probe give a mean particle surface temperature of 3017 K and a corresponding mean velocity of 23.2 m s-1. Simultaneous measurement using a laser Doppler anemometer gives a mean velocity of 22.5 m s-1. Under these conditions, the minimum particle surface temperature that can be measured is estimated to be 1690 K.

The temperature dependence of the reflectance in the range 30--1500 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, the transmission in the vicinity of 3500 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, and the Raman spectrum at 15 K of high-purity ${\mathrm{KTaO}}_{3}$ are compared with the same properties of reduced ${\mathrm{KTaO}}_{3}$ with oxygen vacancies. Phonons at critical points in the Brillouin zone are observed, while disruption of the Ta-O-Ta chains in the reduced material generates at all temperatures an overdamping of the ferroelectric soft mode, which is no longer detectable. The analysis of the transmittance of both samples in the vicinity of the OH stretching-mode frequency supports the conclusion that an interaction exists between the OH radicals and the ferroelectric soft mode in the high-purity ${\mathrm{KTaO}}_{3}$ samples.

Four analytical methods applicable for determining aromatics in middle distillates were studied. Selected middle-distillate fuels were analyzed for aromatics by using the fluorescent indicator adsorption method, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, mass spectrometry, and supercritical fluid chromatography. Interlaboratory comparisons were made by using nuclear magnetic resonance and supercritical fluid chromatography results. Data indicated that all methods exhibit a good correlation among each other while mass spectrometric method tends to provide lower aromatic results. The nuclear magnetic resonance results appears to exhibit the highest values. The reproducibility of the aromatics data depends on the intrinsic nature of the technique, the analytical method applied, and the performance of the laboratory

This study examines the use of multiple cross mapping (MCM) to reduce the interval for an ethanol response QTL on mouse chromosome 1. The phenotype is the acute locomotor response to a 1.5-g/kg i.p. dose of ethanol. The MCM panel consisted of the six unique intercrosses that can be obtained from the C57BL/6J (B6), DBA/2J (D2), BALB/cJ (C) and LP/J (LP) inbred mouse strains (Nor = 600/cross). Ethanol response QTL were detected only with the B6xD2 and B6xC intercrosses. For both crosses, the D2 and C alleles were dominant and decreased ethanol response. The QTL information was used to develop an algorithm for sorting and editing the chromosome 1 Mit microsatellite marker set (http://www.jax.org). This process yielded a cluster of markers between 82 and 85cM (MGI). Evidence that the QTL was localized in or near this interval was obtained by the analysis of a sample (n = 550) of advanced cross heterogenous stock animals. In addition, it was observed that one of the BXD recombinant inbred strains (BXD-32) had a recombination in the interval of interest which produced the expected change in behavior. Overall, the data obtained suggest that the information available within existing genetic maps coupled with MCM data can be used to reduce the QTL interval. In addition, the MCM data set can be used to interrogate gene expression data to estimate which polymorphisms within the interval of interest are relevant to the QTL.

A new microwave plasma at atmospheric pressure is described. The plasma is supported by a surface wave excitation structure called “surfatron”. Both argon and helium can be used to sustain the plasma. In this study, helium has been selected. The sample introduction system consists of an ultrasonic nebulizer associated with a dcsolvation system. The analytical performance in terms of detection limits, calibration curves and some interferences have been assessed. Because of the relatively low power and the short residence time the main problem seems to be the atomization process.
