Litter size is a complex and sex limited trait that depends on various biological, managemental and environmental factors. Owing to its low heritability it is inefficaciously selected by traditional methods. However, due to higher heritability of ovulation rate and embryo survival, selection based on component traits of litter size is advocated. QTL analysis and candidate gene approach are among the various supplementary/alternate strategies for selection of litter size. QTL analysis is aimed at identifying genomic regions affecting trait of interest significantly. Candidate gene approach necessitates identification of genes potentially affecting the trait. There are various genes that significantly affect litter size and its component traits viz. ESR, LEP, BF, IGFBP, RBP4, PRLR, CTNNAL1, WNT10B, TCF12, DAZ, and RNF4. These genes affect litter size in a complex interacting manner. Lately, genome wide association study (GWAS) have been utilized to unveil the genetic and biological background of litter traits, and elucidate the genes governing litter size. Favorable SNPs in these genes have been identified and offers a scope for inclusion in selection programs thereby increasing breeding efficiency and profit in pigs.

Recent literature on managing traumatic duodenal injuries suggests the superiority of primary repair. We hypothesized that duodenal trauma repair by primary closure might not be a safe strategy in an environment dealing predominantly blunt injuries with limited resources.Data analysis was done from the prospectively maintained trauma registry. The study period chosen was from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2018. Data of 63 patients were analyzed for demographics, injuries, management, and outcome. Logistic regression was used to identify mortality predictors.The most common mechanism of injury was blunt (56/63, 88.9%). Forty (63.5%) patients had associated intraabdominal injuries. The most common American Association for the Surgery of Trauma grade of injury to the duodenum was three in 21 patients. Univariate analysis showed that mortality was associated with hypotension on presentation, higher duodenal grade, associated abdominal vascular injuries, primary closure, and duodenal leak. Logistic regression showed associated associated abdominal vascular injuries, primary closure, and leak remained significant predictors of mortality.Primary repair was found to be an independent predictor of mortality. A patient's physiology is a critical determinant of the outcome. Liberal use of tube duodenostomy over primary repair seems reasonable for blunt duodenal injury management.

A total of 138, samples have been collected in both pre and post monsoon season to understand the seasonal variability in groundwater quality and its suitability for drinking and domestic water supply. The samples were analysed for physical parameters, major ions along with fluoride and uranium. The results were integrated with GIS to represent both seasonal and spatial variations of groundwater quality parameters, drinking groundwater quality index (DGQI) and irrigation groundwater quality index (IGQI). Results show that groundwater is alkaline in nature and largely controlled by the silicate weathering, ion exchange and reverse ion exchange processes. However high nitrate concentration exceeding the WHO guideline suggests the influence of anthropogenic activities on groundwater quality. The average values of the major ions concentrations was found higher in pre monsoon season due to change in the recharge. The DGQI values of 6 samples in pre monsoon and 2 samples in post monsoon season falls under poor water quality. However, individual irrigation indices along with the combine IGQI indicate groundwater is suitable for irrigation in both the seasons. These results along with the seasonal and spatial variability map may help the decision makers in planning for better domestic and irrigation water supply.

Health-care-associated infections (HAIs) cause significant morbidity and mortality globally, including in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Networks of hospitals implementing standardised HAI surveillance can provide valuable data on HAI burden, and identify and monitor HAI prevention gaps. Hospitals in many LMICs use HAI case definitions developed for higher-resourced settings, which require human resources and laboratory and imaging tests that are often not available.A network of 26 tertiary-level hospitals in India was created to implement HAI surveillance and prevention activities. Existing HAI case definitions were modified to facilitate standardised, resource-appropriate surveillance across hospitals. Hospitals identified health-care-associated bloodstream infections and urinary tract infections (UTIs) and reported clinical and microbiological data to the network for analysis.26 network hospitals reported 2622 health-care-associated bloodstream infections and 737 health-care-associated UTIs from 89 intensive care units (ICUs) between May 1, 2017, and Oct 31, 2018. Central line-associated bloodstream infection rates were highest in neonatal ICUs (20 per 1000 central line days). Catheter-associated UTI rates were highest in paediatric medical ICUs (4·5 per 1000 urinary catheter days). Klebsiella spp (24·8%) were the most frequent organism in bloodstream infections and Candida spp (29·4%) in UTIs. Carbapenem resistance was common in Gram-negative infections, occurring in 72% of bloodstream infections and 76% of UTIs caused by Klebsiella spp, 77% of bloodstream infections and 76% of UTIs caused by Acinetobacter spp, and 64% of bloodstream infections and 72% of UTIs caused by Pseudomonas spp.The first standardised HAI surveillance network in India has succeeded in implementing locally adapted and context-appropriate protocols consistently across hospitals and has been able to identify a large number of HAIs. The humeral torsion angle is a bony twist of the head of the humerus formed between the proximal and distal articular axis of the humerus, which is essentially significant to measure as it depends on biological activity. The present study was conducted with the aim to document anthropometric variables so as to provide a frame for prosthesis design of humeral components in arthroplasty. A total of 50 dry, normal adult human humeri were obtained from the Department of Anatomy in Nobel Medical College and teaching hospital to measure the angle of torsion, length, and mid-shaft circumference of each bone. The measurement of the angle of humeral torsion was performed by the Kingsley Olmsted method, whereas length and mid-shaft were measured with measuring tape. The data analysis was done in SPSS version 17 to correlate and compare the means. The average (mean± SD) angle of torsion for 50 unpaired dry humeri of both sides was compared and found to be statistically significant (p= 0.004, Right= 66.24± 8.67°, Left= 59.56± 6.7°). Mid-shaft circumference was positively correlated with the angle of torsion and was statistically significant (p=0.012, r= 0.351). The study concludes that mid-shaft circumference was found to be more with a large angle of humeral torsion, but there was no significant correlation with the length of the humeral shaft.

In India, systematic wheat yellow rust survey and pathotype (race) analysis work began in 1930. However, information on population structure and genetic diversity of yellow rust pathogen has not been available. To address this, we conducted studies on population structure and genetic diversity of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) pathotypes using 38 simple sequence repeat primer-pairs. Bayesian assignment and discriminant analysis of principal components indicated the presence of two distinct Pst subpopulations (Pop1 and Pop2) along with 37.9% admixed pathotypes. The unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean also categorized these pathotypes into two major clusters. Principal coordinates analysis explained 20.06 and 12.50% variance in horizontal and vertical coordinates, respectively. Index of association (IA) and the standardized index of association ([Formula: see text]) values showed that Pst subpopulations reproduced asexually (clonally). In total, 102 alleles were detected, with the expected heterozygosity (Hexp) per locus ranging from 0.13 to 0.73, with a mean of 0.47. The average polymorphic information content value of 0.40 indicated high genetic diversity among pathotypes. Analysis of molecular variance revealed 12% of the total variance between subpopulations, 11% among the pathotypes of each subpopulation, and 77% within pathotypes. A significant moderate level of genetic differentiation (FST = 0.122, P < 0.001) and gene flow (Nm = 1.80) were observed between subpopulations. The Pst virulence phenotypes showed a weak positive correlation (R2 = 0.027, P < 0.02) with molecular genotypes.

Acute traumatic aortic injuries, which have substantial lethal outcomes at the time of admission, are fatal in 80% to 90% of cases. These injuries are relatively rare and have nonspecific clinical presentations. Radiologists and emergency physicians need to identify the radiological signs of acute traumatic aortic injury and differentiate them from common imaging errors to ensure accurate diagnosis and determine appropriate management protocols. In combination with image-guided interventions, advances in cross-sectional imaging have enabled nonsurgical management of acute traumatic aortic injuries. Timely and precise diagnoses of these injuries following prompt treatment are essential as up to 90% of patients presenting at the hospital can undergo early repair.

Phosphorous (P) entering into the water bodies through point and non-point sources is a causal agent for eutrophication. Nature Based Solutions (NBS) like Constructed Wetlands (CW) are cost effective methods for treating the grey waters in order to protect the water bodies form risk of eutrophication. The P removal efficiency of Constructed Wetlands (CW) can be improved by adding new substrate having potential P removal efficiency.The study was conducted to determine the phosphorus removal from wastewater using Baked Clay Ball (BCB) media in Vertical Flow Reed Beds (VFRB). The BCB was prepared with a mixture of river clay and saw dust. The field and lab-scale experimentation were set and operated in batch feeding mode using institutional wastewater for four months. The VFRBs were filled with BCB and planted with locally available reed grass (Phragmites karka). The hydraulic retention period in VFRB was 48 hours. Prime goal of the experiment was to investigate the Phosphorus (P) removal efficiency of the VRFBs apart from other conventional wastewater quality parameters. The concentration of phosphorus of the institutional wastewater was in the range of 27.3 mg/l to 16.3 mg/l. The average phosphorus removal efficiency of the VFRB 1 and 2 filled with BCB was 93.47%, while the average P removal efficiency of gravel filled VFRB 2 and 3 was 68.20%. Thus the experiment reflected that the BCB is a better media than the gravel for P removal. Therefore, the BCB may be used at a field scale to remove P from wastewater in constructed wetlands.Further, there is scope to develop new substrate materials focusing on its P retention capacity, long lasting performance and cost of the substrate to be applied in real treatment situations.

Leaf rust is one of the important diseases limiting global wheat production and productivity. To identify quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) or genomic regions associated with seedling and adult plant leaf rust resistance, multilocus genome-wide association studies (ML-GWAS) were performed on a panel of 400 diverse wheat genotypes using 35 K single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping assays and trait data of leaf rust resistance. Association analyses using six multi-locus GWAS models revealed a set of 201 significantly associated QTNs for seedling and 65 QTNs for adult plant resistance (APR), explaining 1.98–31.72% of the phenotypic variation for leaf rust. Among these QTNs, 51 reliable QTNs for seedling and 15 QTNs for APR were consistently detected in at least two GWAS models and were considered reliable QTNs. Three genomic regions were pleiotropic, each controlling two to three pathotype-specific seedling resistances to leaf rust. We also identified candidate genes, such as leucine-rich repeat receptor-like (LRR) protein kinases, P-loop containing nucleoside triphosphate hydrolase and serine-threonine/tyrosine-protein kinases (STPK), which have a role in pathogen recognition and disease resistance linked to the significantly associated genomic regions. The QTNs identified in this study can prove useful in wheat molecular breeding programs aimed at enhancing resistance to leaf rust and developing next-generation leaf rust-resistant varieties.

Zika virus (ZIKV) causes significant human diseases without specific therapy. Previously we found erythrosin B, an FDA-approved food additive, inhibited viral NS2B−NS3 interactions, leading to inhibition of ZIKV infection in cell culture. In this study, we performed pharmacokinetic and in vivo studies to demonstrate the efficacy of erythrosin B against ZIKV in 3D mini-brain organoid and mouse models. Our results showed that erythrosin B is very effective in abolishing ZIKV replication in the 3D organoid model. Although pharmacokinetics studies indicated that erythrosin B had a low absorption profile, mice challenged by a lethal dose of ZIKV showed a significantly improved survival rate upon oral administration of erythrosin B, compared to vehicle control. Limited structure−activity relationship studies indicated that most analogs of erythrosin B with modifications on the xanthene ring led to loss or reduction of inhibitory activities towards viral NS2B−NS3 interactions, protease activity and antiviral efficacy. In contrast, introducing chlorine substitutions on the isobenzofuran ring led to slightly increased activities, suggesting that the isobenzofuran ring is well tolerated for modifications. Cytotoxicity studies indicated that all derivatives are nontoxic to human cells. Overall, our studies demonstrated erythrosin B is an effective antiviral against ZIKV both in vitro and in vivo.

The teleconnection studies regarding Indian summer monsoon (ISM) clouds are not focused on detail from both observational and modeling aspects. This is despite the fact that clouds play a seminal role in governing rainfall variability through the modulation of heating and induced circulation. Therefore, we find it essential to explore whether the inter-annual variability of ISM clouds is also remotely influenced by the slowly varying predictable component e.g. Sea Surface Temperature (SST). The findings reveal the linkage of observed TCF (and rainfall) over the ISM region with slowly varying forcing (e.g., global SST). The observed/reanalysis teleconnection pattern of TCF-SST is almost similar to that of rainfall-SST.In the long-term period, TCF and SST show a strong and positive correlation with Extra-Tropics (R ~ 0.41), NAO (R ~ 0.51), and AMO (R ~ 0.41) SST regions, in addition to canonical ENSO teleconnection (R ~ −0.39). This is better captured in CMIP6-MME than in CMIP5-MME. The representation of the global teleconnection pattern has been significantly improved in participating models from CMIP5 to CMIP6. The teleconnection with extra-tropics and north Atlantic mode of variability is markedly enhanced in CMIP6-MME compared to CMIP5-MME. The present study has also shown the lag correlations in the teleconnection analysis, i.e., the correlation of June–September (JJAS) mean of rainfall/TCF with October–December (OND) SST from observation/reanalysis, CMIP5-MME, and CMIP6-MME. The CMIP6-MME performs better than CMIP5-MME as compared to observation/reanalysis. Thus, the improved understanding of the teleconnection of cloud variables with ENSO and other predictors (ET, NAO, and AMO) will help researchers take up the challenges of improving the ISMR skill far ahead using the new generation coupled climate models. In a single image, haze/fog removal is an exigent problem due to its ill-posed character. In general, the efficiency of haze removal algorithm depends on the accurate estimation of the transmission map and the perfection of this map relies on the estimation of scene depth and scattering coefficient. Existing methods focus only on the improvement of scene depth model and keep scattering coefficient as a constant. However, scattering coefficient equally contributes in the calculation of transmission map because haze density varies with the scattering medium. Therefore, the variable scattering based transmission map is required for perfect haze removal algorithm. In this paper, the upgraded transmission map is proposed which is based on the variation of scattering information in foggy image. Apart from this, in the proposed model, linearity is achieved by the ratio of difference to sum of intensity and saturation. Besides, proposed method also take care the well known problems of edge preservation and colour fidelity. Experimental results manifest that the proposed model provides better efficiency as compared to the existing haze removal algorithms in terms of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Introduction Several drugs have been explored for the antiviral action against COVID-19 disease but none of them has been approved barring few such as Remdesivir which got emergency use authorization from USFDA. Interferon are attractive agents due to their broad anti-viral and immunological properties. Interferon alpha-2b has been recently investigated for this purpose. This study presents a systematic review of all the clinical studies involving Interferon alpha-2b to determine its efficacy and safety. Methods A systematic review of literature was done using relevant terms for ‘COVID-19” and “Interferon alpha”. The studies evaluating the effect of Interferon alpha were identified and included in the study for qualitative analysis. Result and Discussion All four clinical studies have shown that Interferon alpha 2b has efficacy as antiviral agent as shown by different clinical and laboratory parameters. It has also found to be safe and free of any major side effects. Conclusion Interferon alpha 2b is an effective antiviral agent with potential to be use in COVID-19. This drug has already been given restricted use authorization in India.

There are no randomized controlled trials comparing the eTEP with IPOM repair and this randomized study was designed to compare the two techniques in terms of early pain, cost effectiveness, and quality of life.This was a prospective randomized trial with intention to treat analysis. The primary outcome was immediate post-operative pain scores. Operative time, conversions, peri operative morbidity, hospital stay, return to daily activities, incremental cost effectiveness ratio and quality of life (WHO-QOL BREF) were secondary outcomes.Sixty patients were randomized equally. Early post-operative pain scores and seroma rates were significantly lower and with a significantly earlier return to activity in eTEP group (p value lt; 0.05). With negative costs and positive effects, eTEP group was 2.4 times more cost effective.eTEP repair is better in terms of lesser early post-operative pain, earlier return to activities and cost effectiveness in small and medium size defects.
