Nanomaterials (NMs) have increasingly been used for the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers (HNCs) over the past decade. HNCs can easily infiltrate surrounding tissues and form distant metastases, meaning that most patients with HNC are diagnosed at an advanced stage and often have a poor prognosis. Since NMs can be used to deliver various agents, including imaging agents, drugs, genes, vaccines, radiosensitisers, and photosensitisers, they play a crucial role in the development of novel technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of HNCs. Indeed, NMs have been reported to enhance delivery efficiency and improve the prognosis of patients with HNC by allowing targeted delivery, controlled release, responses to stimuli, and the delivery of multiple agents. In this review, we consider recent advances in NMs that could be used to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of patients with HNC and the potential for future research.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether tumor-educated platelet (TEP) snoRNAs could be used as a diagnostic biomarker for esophageal cancer (ESCA). Methods: Platelet precipitates were obtained from platelet-rich plasma by low-speed centrifugation, and total RNA was extracted from platelets using Trizol™ reagent. RT-qPCR was used to detect snoRNA expression, and the receiver operating characteristic was used to assess its diagnostic potential. Results: SNORA58, SNORA68 and SNORD93 were significantly upregulated in TEPs from ESCA patients and early-stage patients compared with healthy controls. Importantly, the three snoRNAs were capable of serving as circulating biomarkers of diagnostics and early diagnosis of ESCA, possessing areas under the curve of 0.846 and 0.857, respectively. Conclusion: TEP SNORA58, SNORA68 and SNORD93 could potentially serve as noninvasive biomarkers for diagnosis and early diagnosis of ESCA.

Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) have been shown to play critical regulatory roles in cancer development. SNORD88C, which located at the intronic region of C19orf48 in chromosome 19q.33 with a 97-nt length was screened through database and snoRNA-sequencing. We firstly verified this snoRNA was up-regulated in tissue and plasma and served as a non-invasive diagnostic biomarker; then confirmed that SNORD88C promoted proliferation and metastasis of NSCLC in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, SNORD88C promoted 2'-O-methylation modification at the C3680 site on 28S rRNA and in turn enhanced downstream SCD1 translation, a central lipogenic enzyme for the synthesis of MUFA that can inhibit autophagy by regulating lipid peroxidation and mTOR, providing the novel insight into the regulation of SNORD88C in NSCLC.

The frequent start–stop scheme in the operation management of large pumping stations causes several problems, e.g., energy consumption and a potential safety hazard. We therefore established a mathematical model for the optimal operation of a large-scale pumping station considering the start-stop loss of machine. The objectives of the optimization model included electricity charges for a pumping station operation and the start-stop loss of a pumping station. The blade angle and start-stop scheme were taken into account as the double-decision variables, while the target water extraction (equality constraint), start-stop scheme, and power were the constraint conditions. A combination of an orthogonal experiment and a 0-1 integer programming algorithm was proposed to explore the optimal solution of the model. A real case of a single-unit pump station in China was applied to prove the effectiveness of the algorithm. The results showed that the optimization efficiency of the proposed algorithm was 4%–10% higher than that of the genetic algorithm. Additionally, the maximum optimization benefit was obtained when there were fewer than three start-stops during the operation process. The proposed algorithm provided a reference for similar complex nonlinear models.

Aim: The study aimed to clarify the diagnostic value of exosomal miRNAs in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Methods: Plasma exosomes were isolated from peripheral blood of EOC patients and healthy donors by ultracentrifugation and verified by transmission electron microscopy, qNano and western blot. The expression of exosomal miRNAs was detected by quantitative PCR, and the diagnostic efficiency of exosomal miRNAs was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results: Exosomal miR-1260a, miR-7977 and miR-192-5p were significantly decreased in EOC as compared with healthy controls. The area under the curve of the combination of three exosomal miRNAs was 0.8337. Moreover, the level of exosomal miR-7977 was related to the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, which decreased in EOC patients with a high neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio. Conclusion: Exosomal miR-1260a, miR-7977 and miR-192-5p act as potentially EOC diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.

Despite the fact that solid-state electrolytes have attracted broad research interests, the limited ion transfer and high interface impedance restrain their application in high-performance batteries with high cyclic stability and power density. Here, a new quasi-solid-state polymer electrolyte containing lightweight semiconducting hydrogenated borophene (HB) nanosheets, ionic liquids, and poly (ethylene oxide) is reported. The cyclic overpotential of the Li-Li symmetrical battery is about 65 mV lower than that of HB-free quasi-solid-state electrolyte, demonstrating the lower interface impedance. The interaction between lithium-ion and ethylene-oxide chains decreases owing to the existence of HB nanosheets and ionic liquids, which facilitates lithium-ion diffusion. The lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide molecule surface adsorption at the HB nanosheets enhances the dissociation of lithium ions, and thus the matched lithium iron phosphate/Li full cell delivers the acceptable rate performance up to 5C. This work provides a new filler candidate to enhance the ionic conductivity of quasi-solid-state electrolytes that may facilitate to construct the high-performance HB nanosheets and ionic liquids-based lithium metal batteries.

Multiple new variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have constantly emerged, as the delta and omicron variants, which have developed resistance to currently gained neutralizing antibodies. This highlights a critical need to discover new therapeutic agents to overcome the variants mutations. Despite the availability of vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the use of broadly neutralizing antibodies has been considered as an alternative way for the prevention or treatment of SARS-CoV-2 variants infection. Here, we show that the nasal delivery of two previously characterized broadly neutralizing antibodies (F61 and H121) protected K18-hACE2 mice against lethal challenge with SARS-CoV-2 variants. A human-neuron-inspired multifunctional flexible wearable sensor was fabricated in this study. It possessed high sensitivity (GFmax= 68.64,Smax= 0.229 kPa−1), flexibility, stability (∼300 cycles), remoldability, and strain/pressure sensitivity.

Erratic rainfall and misalignment between the rainy season and the growing season of winter wheat greatly limit rainfed winter wheat yield in the Loess Plateau of China. To increase the grain yield of winter wheat in this region, the effects of different agronomic practices, including adjusting planting pattern (NR, narrow row spacing), increasing seeding rate (high seeding rate, HS), decreasing basal nitrogen rate and increasing top-dressed nitrogen rate (DBN), and replacing an old cultivar with a new cultivar (NC) on wheat yield were investigated for two consecutive years. The results showed that the current grain yield of rainfed winter wheat in the Loess Plateau could be increased to 5879–7093 kg ha−1 by HS, DBN and NC practices relative to the practice of high-yielding farmers (PF). The increased yield due to HS, DBN and NC was attributed to the higher number of spikes ha−1, 1000-grain weight, and kernels spike−1. Before the flowering stage, HS increased soil water consumption (SWC) in 1–3 m subsoil due to the higher plant population compared with that of PF, whereas DBN decreased SWC in the 0–2 m soil layer compared with that of PF. After the flowering stage, HS, DBN, and NC increased SWC by 8–16 mm in 2–3 m subsoil compared to PF. The water use efficiency (WUE) was increased under DBN and NC in comparison with PF. However, the WUE did not increase under HS as it had the highest evapotranspiration among the five treatments. Increasing the use of subsoil water during the late growth stage by optimizing agronomic practices or applying new cultivars with expansive roots should be the primary approach to increase rainfed winter wheat yield in this region.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diurnal temperature range (DTR) on the number of admissions for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in middle-aged and elderly population. Methods We collected DTR and the diurnal hospital admission data of patients with ICH over 45 years old, as well as mixed factors such as meteorology and air pollutants in Hunan Province during 2019 as a representative area of central China and analyzed with a distributed lag nonlinear model. Results In total, there were 54 690 ICH admissions in Hunan Province with 30.76% in middle-aged and 69.24% in the elderly. After controlling for other confounding factors, this study found that there was a non-linear relationship between DTR and the number of ICH hospital admissions in middle-aged and elderly groups. Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) still occupied the leading reason of cancer death due to lack of availability of early detection. This study aimed to identify the effective biomarkers for the early-stage NSCLC diagnostics based on plasma snoRNAs.The differential snoRNAs between lung cancer patients and healthy donors were analyzed using the SNORic and TCGA databases. SNORD42B and SNORD111 were screened out and further verified in 48 FFPE NSCLC and adjacent normal tissues, as well as in plasma from 165 NSCLC patients and 118 health donors using qRT-PCR. Next, their diagnostic efficiency, as well as combined with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), was obtained by the analysis of receiver operating characteristic (ROC).We first screened out 47 top differential snoRNAs, among which the top 10 upregulated snoRNAs in LUAD were U44, U75, U78, U77, SNORD72, SNORD13, SNORD12B, SCARNA5, U80, SNORD41, and in LUSC were U44, U75, U78, SNORD41, SNORD111, SNORA56, U17a, SNORD35A, SNORD32A, SNORA71D. SNORD42B and SNORD111 was significantly increased not only in tumor tissues but also in plasma from NSCLC and early-stage NSCLC patients. They were capable to act as promising biomarkers for NSCLC and early-stage NSCLC diagnosis. Moreover, CEA diagnostic efficiency for early-stage NSCLC was significantly improved when combined with these two plasma snoRNAs.SNORD42B and SNORD111 could act as the potential and non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers for NSCLC and early-stage NSCLC.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern (VOCs), especially the latest Omicron, have exhibited severe antibody evasion. Broadly neutralizing antibodies with high potency against Omicron are urgently needed for understanding the working mechanisms and developing therapeutic agents. In this study, we characterized the previously reported F61, which was isolated from convalescent patients infected with prototype SARS-CoV-2, as a broadly neutralizing antibody against all VOCs including Omicron BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2, BA.3 and BA.4 sublineages by utilizing antigen binding and cell infection assays. We also identified and characterized another broadly neutralizing antibody D2 with epitope distinct from that of F61. More importantly, we showed that a combination of F61 with D2 exhibited synergy in neutralization and protecting mice from SARS-CoV-2 Delta and Omicron BA.1 variants. Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) structures of the spike-F61 and spike-D2 binary complexes revealed the distinct epitopes of F61 and D2 at atomic level and the structural basis for neutralization. Cryo-EM structure of the Omicron-spike-F61-D2 ternary complex provides further structural insights into the synergy between F61 and D2. These results collectively indicated F61 and F61-D2 cocktail as promising therapeutic antibodies for combating SARS-CoV-2 variants including diverse Omicron sublineages.

tRNA derived small RNAs (tRFs) have recently received extensive attention; however, the effects of tRFs in exosome as biomarkers has been less studied. The objective of this study was to validate novel diagnostic exosomal tRFs with sensitivity and specificity for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Exosomes extracted from plasma of NSCLC patients and healthy individuals were identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), qNano and western blots. The differentially expressed tRFs were screened by high-throughput sequencing in plasma exosomes of NSCLC patients and healthy individuals, and further verified by Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR). To assess the diagnostic efficacy of exosomal tRFs for NSCLC, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used next.The expression levels of exosomal tRF-Leu-TAA-005, tRF-Asn-GTT-010, tRF-Ala-AGC-036, tRF-Lys-CTT-049, and tRF-Trp-CCA-057 were significantly decreased in NSCLC patients and early-stage NSCLC patients compared to healthy individuals. Notably, the exepression of tRF-Leu-TAA-005, tRF-Asn-GTT-010, tRF-Ala-AGC-036, tRF-Lys-CTT-049, and tRF-Trp-CCA-057 in the exosomes were higher than the exosome depleted supernatant (EDS).Our results showed that the levels of exosomal tRF-Leu-TAA-005, tRF-Asn-GTT-010, tRF-Ala-AGC-036, tRF-Lys-CTT-049, and tRF-Trp-CCA-057 were significantly downregulated in NSCLC patients. This suggests that these five exosomal tRFs may be promising diagnostic biomarkers for NSCLC.

After the epidemic in Wuhan City was brought under control in 2020, local outbreaks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the mainland of China were mainly due to imported COVID-19 cases. The ongoing evolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has continued to generate new variants. Some have been designated as variants of concern (VOCs) by the World Health Organization (WHO). To better assess the role of imported SARS-CoV-2 surveillance and the prevalence of VOCs in 2021, the genomic surveillance data of SARS-CoV-2 from imported COVID-19 cases of 2021 in the mainland of China were analyzed.The analyses included the number of sequence submissions, time of sequence deposition, and time of detection of the VOCs in order to determine the timeliness and sensitivity of the surveillance. The proportions of VOCs were analyzed and compared with data from the Global Initiative of Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID).A total of 3,355 sequences of imported cases were submitted from 29 provincial-level administrative divisions, with differences in the number of sequence submissions and median time of sequence deposition. A total of 2,388 sequences with more than 90% genomic coverage were used for lineage analysis. The epidemic trend from Alpha to Delta to Omicron in imported cases was consistent with that in the GISAID. In addition, VOCs from imported cases were usually identified after WHO designation and before causing local outbreaks.The global distribution of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs changed rapidly in 2021. Robust genomic surveillance of the imported SARS-CoV-2 in the mainland of China is of great significance.

BackgroundExosomal miRNA had been proved as the promising biomarkers for multiple cancers including epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). This study aimed to validate the diagnostic accuracy of exosomal miR-320d, miR-4479, and miR-6763-5p for EOC.Materials and methodsExosomes isolated from the plasma by ultracentrifugation were verified using TEM, qNano and western blot. MiRNAs sequencing was used to screen out the differential exosomal miRNAs and miR-320d, miR-4479, and miR-6763-5p were selected as candidates, which were further verified by RT-qPCR in 168 healthy donors and 161 primary EOC patients. Besides, the diagnostic accuracy of these three exosomal miRNAs were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC).ResultsMiRNAs sequencing revealed 95 differential exosomal miRNAs between EOC patients and healthy donors. Subsequently, exosomal miR-320d, miR-4479, and miR-6763-5p were significantly down regulated in EOC patients compared with healthy controls and benign patients. More importantly, these three miRNAs could serve as circulating diagnostics biomarkers for EOC, possessing areas under the curve (AUC) of 0.6549, 0.7781, and 0.6834, respectively. Moreover, these three exosomal miRNAs levels were closely associated with lymph node metastasis, meanwhile exosomal miR-320d and miR-4479 expression was related to tumor stage.ConclusionExosomal miR-320d, miR-4479, and miR-6763-5p might serve as potential biomarkers for EOC.

SFTS virus (SFTSV) is a novel bunyavirus, which was discovered as the etiological agent of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in China in 2009, and was now prevalent in at least 25 provinces in China. SFTS was subsequently identified in South Korea and Japan in 2012. To explore the molecular evolution and genetic characteristics of this newly identified pathogen, we reported 72 whole genome sequences of SFTSV, and built a dataset of SFTSV genome sequences containing 292 L-segment, 302 M-segment and 502 S-segment. We clearly divided SFTSV into six genotypes, Genotype A-F. It was found that genotype F was the dominant epidemic genotype of Japan, South Korea, and Zhejiang province of China. The coalescent analysis supported that SFTSV originated in the early 18th century from Zhejiang province, and Genotype F was the most primitive one. Henan, Hubei, and Anhui provinces which are located in Dabie Mountain area were mainly epidemic of Genotype A, which emerged relatively late but distributed widely. A total of 37 recombination events were identified, making SFTSV with a high recombination frequency (L segment 5.1%, M segment 3.6%, S segment 0.8%) among negative-strand segmented RNA viruses. It was identified that 19 reassortant strains belonged to 12 reassortment forms of SFTSV genome containing 6 newly identified forms. The reassortment virus and recombination in tick were both found for the first time. We also found many of genotype-specific mutation sites, 7 of which could be considered as potential molecular marker for genotype classification. This study promoted a more comprehensive understanding of the phylogeny and origin, and the genetic diversity of SFTSV, and it could help the studies of other newly discovered tick-borne bunyavirus as reference data and research ideas.

Stroke readmission increases financial burden on the family and the consumption of medical resources, and 30-day readmission rate is an important indicator for quality evaluation on health services. The influential factors for readmission mainly include patient-related factors, hospital factors, and society-related factors, with regional differences. This study aims to explore the spatial distribution and its main relevant factors for 30-day readmission of stroke patients in Hunan Province, and to provide the useful information for the improvement of regional prevention and control of stroke readmission.Stroke patients in Hunan Province who were hospitalized in 2018 and readmitted within 30 days were included in the study. The vector map of the county boundary in Hunan Province was used as the basic map since county was the spatial analysis unit. SPSS 26.0 and ArcGIS 10.8 were used for statistical analysis that contains descriptive analysis of the general situation and the distribution map of readmission rate within 30 days of stroke patients. Spatial autocorrelation analysis and spatial regression analysis were further used to find the spatial clusters of the 30-day readmission rate of stroke and the local relationship between the readmission rate and main influential factors.In 2018, a total of 172 800 stroke patients were hospitalized in Hunan Province, of which 6 953 patients were re-hospitalized within 30 days after discharging due to stroke. The 30-day readmission rate was 4.09% in Hunan Province. The clusters of stroke readmission rates were mainly concentrated in the northeast and western regions in Hunan Province. The geographically weighted regression revealed that proportion of patients with complications, number of hospitals per 10 000 population and number of primary medical and health care institution per 10 000 population were the main relevant factors for stroke readmission, and there were differences both in the direction and degree of the effect on readmission in different regions.The 30-day readmission rate for stroke patients in Hunan province and its main influential factors had spatial heterogeneity. The key prevention and control areas were mainly concentrated in the northeast and western regions. It is recommended that the prevention and treatment of stroke complications and the construction of medical institutions need to be strengthened to improve the quality of medical services, particularly in the western region. The importance to the treatment of stroke complications should be attached in the northern region, and the primary health care should be reinforced in the northeast region. All counties should take prevention and control measures according to local conditions, so as to effectively control the readmission rate of stroke within 30 days.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the deadliest digestive system cancers worldwide lacking effective therapeutic strategies. Recently, it has been found that the natural product celastrol plays an anti-cancer role in several human cancers by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. However, it remains elusive whether and how celastrol suppresses tumor growth of ESCC. In the present study, for the first time, we demonstrated that celastrol triggered both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis pathways to diminish the tumor growth of ESCC in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistic studies revealed that celastrol coordinatively induced DR5-dependent extrinsic apoptosis and Noxa-dependent intrinsic apoptosis through transcriptional activation of ATF4 in ESCC cells. Furthermore, we found that the FoxO3a-Bim pathway was involved in the intrinsic apoptosis of ESCC cells induced by celastrol. Our study elucidated the tumor-suppressive efficacy of celastrol on ESCC and revealed a previously unknown mechanism underlying celastrol-induced apoptosis, highlighting celastrol as a promising apoptosis-inducing therapeutic strategy for ESCC.

Although three monovalent EV-A71 vaccines have been launched in mainland China since 2016, hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) still causes a considerable disease burden in China. Vaccines’ use may change the epidemiological characters of HFMD. All HFMD cases’ data from January 2011 to December 2018 were obtained from the public health science data center given by the Chinese Center for Diseases Control and Prevention. Spatial autocorrelation analysis and space-time scan statistics analysis were used to explore the spatiotemporal distribution pattern of this disease at the provincial level in mainland China. Interrupted time series (ITS) was used to analyze the impact of the EV-A71 vaccine on the incidence of HFMD. This study found that the median annual incidence of HFMD was 153.78 per 100,000 (ranging from 120.79 to 205.06) in mainland China from 2011 to 2018. Two peaks of infections were observed per year. Background Quality is the most important factor in satisfaction. However, the existing satisfaction index model of urban and rural resident-based basic medical insurance scheme (SIM_URRBMI) lacks the segmentation of perceived quality elements, it couldn’t provide a reference for quality improvement and satisfaction promotion. This study aims to construct a revised SIM_URRBMI that can accurately and detailly measure perceived quality and provide feasible and scientific suggestions for improving the satisfaction of urban and rural residents' basic medical insurance scheme (URRBMI) in China. Methods Based on the theoretical framework of the American Customer Satisfaction Index, the elements of perceived quality were refined through literature review and expert consultation, and a pool of alternative measurement variables was formed. A three-stage randomized stratified cluster sampling was adopted. The main decision makers of URRBMI in the families of primary school students in 8 primary schools in Changsha were selected. Both the classic test theory and the item response theory were used for measurement variables selection. The reliability and validity of the model were tested by partial least squares (PLS)-related methods. Results A total of 1909 respondents who had URRBMI for their children were investigated. The SIM_URRBMI1.0 consists of 11 latent variables and 28 measurement variables with good reliability and validity. Among the three explanatory variables of public satisfaction, perceived quality had the largest total effect (path coefficient) (0.737). The variable with the greatest effect among the five first-order latent variables on perceived quality was the quality of the medical insurance policy (0.472). Conclusions The SIM_URRBMI1.0 consists of 28 measurement variables and 11 latent variables. It is a reliable, valid, and standard satisfaction measurement tool for URRBMI with good prediction ability for public satisfaction. In addition, the model provides an accurate evaluation of the perceived quality, which will greatly help with performance improvement diagnosis. The most critical aspects of satisfaction improvement are optimizing the scope and proportion of reimbursement as well as setting appropriate level of deductible and capitation of URRBMI.

Objective: The hyperactivated neddylation pathway plays an important role in tumorigenesis and is emerging as a promising anticancer target. We aimed to study whether NEDD8 (neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally down-regulated 8) might serve as a therapeutic target in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods: The clinical relevance of NEDD8 expression was evaluated by using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and tissue arrays. NEDD8-knockdown ESCC cells generated with the CRISPR/Cas9 system were used to explore the anticancer effects and mechanisms. Quantitative proteomic analysis was used to examine the variations in NEDD8 knockdown-induced biological pathways. The cell cycle and apoptosis were assessed with fluorescence activated cell sorting. A subcutaneous-transplantation mouse tumor model was established to investigate the anticancer potential of NEDD8 silencing in vivo. Results: NEDD8 was upregulated at both the mRNA and protein expression levels in ESCC, and NEDD8 overexpression was associated with poorer overall patient survival (mRNA level: P = 0.028, protein level: P = 0.026, log-rank test). Downregulation of NEDD8 significantly suppressed tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. Quantitative proteomic analysis revealed that downregulation of NEDD8 induced cell cycle arrest, DNA damage, and apoptosis in ESCC cells. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that NEDD8 knockdown led to the accumulation of cullin-RING E3 ubiquitin ligases (CRLs) substrates through inactivation of CRLs, thus suppressing the malignant phenotype by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in ESCC. Rescue experiments demonstrated that the induction of apoptosis after NEDD8 silencing was attenuated by DR5 knockdown. Conclusions: Our study elucidated the anti-ESCC effects and underlying mechanisms of NEDD8 knockdown, and validated NEDD8 as a potential target for ESCC therapy.

A glucose biosensor prepared using interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel as a sensing material is the subject of growing interest due to its fast response and high sensitivity. However, the IPN hydrogel circumvents the traditional antifouling strategy, which often requires thick antifouling coating that can result in poor glucose sensitivity owing to its energetic physical barrier (greater than 43 nm); thus a complex, time-consuming and high-cost salivary preprocessing is needed to remove protein contaminants before salivary glucose detection using the IPN hydrogel. This limits its practical application in trace salivary glucose-level monitoring. Herein, a new hydrogel film based on a sandwich array (HFSA) with a weak physical barrier, which exhibits superior antifouling and sensitivity in salivary glucose detection is reported. HFSA relies on the formation of the sandwich structure containing substrate-grafted, surface-grafted zwitterionic polymer brushes (pSBMA) and phenylboronic acid (PBA)-functionalized hydrogel. The synergistic effect originating from pSBMA brushes on the surface of HFSA and inside the HFSA matrix provides a suitable physical barrier (∼28 nm) and a robust hydration layer for HFSA, which can enhance its sensitivity and antifouling. The results show that HFSA reduce the adsorption of nonspecific protein in 10% saliva by nearly 90% and enhanced the glucose sensitivity by 130%, compared to the IPN hydrogel film. These results demonstrate that HFSA exhibits significant potential as an antifouling and sensitive glucose probe for QCM sensors in non-invasive salivary glucose monitoring.

Aqueous zinc ion batteries employing metallic zinc anodes and aqueous electrolytes are highly attractive electrochemical energy storage devices owing to their cost effectiveness, intrinsic safety, elemental abundance and competitive gravimetric energy density. Compared with other cathode materials, vanadium-based compounds feature advantages such as higher capacity, higher power density and longer cycle life. Here, a comprehensive review is presented on recent advances of vanadium-based cathodes, focusing on the correlation between the structures and electrode performances as well as energy-storage mechanisms. The structure and electrochemical properties of vanadium-based cathode materials are discussed by categorizing Zn2+ diffusion channels including one-dimensional tunnels, two-dimensional planes, three-dimensional interpenetrating networks and zero-dimensional diffusion channels. Furthermore, the remaining issues of vanadium-based cathodes are highlighted and promising performance-enhancement strategies are overviewed from aspects such as lattice control, vacancy/defect engineering, and pre-intercalation of cations and/or molecules.

Enhancing the zinc ion storage ability of the existing cathodes is an important research field. Constructing the heterostructure is a promising and effective strategy. Interestingly, for oxygen-free cathodes, a nano-depth heterostructure layer will inevitably form on their surface when exposed to air. However, only the near-surface heterostructure interface cannot change their intrinsic zinc storage ability. Theoretically speaking, via constructing the bulk-type heterostructure with enough interfaces and grain boundaries, the intrinsic zinc storage ability of bulk cathodes can be effectively improved. Here, as a proof of concept, an operando conversion method to construct VS4/V2O3 heterostructures enabled by the extrinsic adsorbed oxygen is proposed. The successful preparation of VS4/V2O3 heterostructures is demonstrated via various characterization studies and analyses including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, etc. Meanwhile, the obtained VS4/V2O3 heterostructures deliver an enhanced zinc ion storage capacity of 164 mA h g−1, rate performance and cycle stability. This operando construction approach enabled by extrinsic adsorbed oxygen provides a novel strategy to fabricate the functional heterostructure-based cathodes for multivalent ion batteries with high performance.

After following 141 children with likely asymptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus infection in a highly immune population in China, four children (2.8%) were found to have late-onset hearing loss. No maternal or childhood factors, except higher saliva cytomegalovirus viral load at birth (P = 0.03), were associated with increased risk of developing a hearing loss.
