We assessed inpatients’ psychotic symptoms as well as their aggressive and impulsive personality traits using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire.Results: Compared with the scores of inpatients in the non-aggressive group, the total Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, subscale, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale behavioral factor scores in those in the aggressive group were higher (p < 0.05). The results of logistic regression analysis suggested that a high Positive and Negative Symptom Scale positive factor score (odds ratio = 1.07) and a high Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire physical aggression score (odds ratio = 1.02) were risk factors for aggressive behavior.Conclusion: Hospitalized patients with schizophrenia with more severe positive symptoms and aggressive traits may be more prone to aggressive behavior.Keywords: schizophrenia, aggressive behavior, impulsivity trait, aggressive trait, stable patients

The longlegged ant Anoplolepis gracilipes (Smith) is a highly invasive tramp ant species known for its deleterious effects on native ecosystems. While tramp ants are associated with human activity, information on how different intensities of human activity affect their distribution is limited. This study investigated how anthropogenic activities affected the distribution of A. gracilipes in Penang, a tropical island in northern peninsular Malaysia. Three study sites (Youth Park, Sungai Ara, and Bukit Jambul/Relau) were selected, containing four sub-locations corresponding to different levels of human activity (low, moderate, high, and very high), determined by the average number of passersby observed over 30 min. Baited index cards were placed at each sub-location to evaluate ant abundance and distribution. The results demonstrated that A. gracilipes worker abundance was highest in areas of moderate human activity, as opposed to areas with low and higher human activity. The low abundance of A. gracilipes in comparatively undisturbed localities may be attributed to unsuitable microclimate, lack of propagule pressure, and diminished honeydew availability. In contrast, its exclusion from more urbanized localities could be explained by high interspecific competition with other tramp species and the absence of preferred nesting sites.

Currently, China has achieved a remarkable achievement on the containment of COVID-19, which creates a favorable condition for the gradual resumption of normal life. However, COVID-19 infections continue to rise in many nations and some sporadic cases occur from time to time in China, which still poses some risks to the resumption. Hence, it is imperative to develop some reasonable techniques to assess the resumption risk. This paper aims to investigate an integrated interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) technique to adroitly assess the resumption risk based on DEMATEL (decision making trial and evaluation laboratory), BWM (best-worst method) and SPA (set pair analysis). This integrated technique is called IVIF-DBWM-SPA, where the IVIF-DBWM (combined by the IVIF-DEMATEL and IVIF-BWM) is used to determine the global criteria weights and the IVIF-SPA is employed to generate the ranking order of the alternatives. The IVIF-DEMATEL and IVIF-BWM are used to determine the weights of dimensions and the weights of criteria under each dimension, respectively. In this IVIF-BWM, two bi-objective programming models are constructed by regarding experts' pessimistic and optimistic attitudes, respectively. Combined experts' intrapersonal and interpersonal uncertainties simultaneously, a bi-objective programming model is proposed to derive the dynamic weights of experts. Based on the determined weights of experts and criteria, an IVIF-SPA is developed to assess the risk levels of all alternatives. The validity of the proposed technique is demonstrated with a real case of college resumption risk assessment amid COVID-19. Some sensitivity and comparison analyses are provided to show the merits of the proposed technique.

Clonal reproduction can provide an advantage for invasive species to establish as it can circumvent inbreeding depression which often plagues introduced populations. The world's most widespread invasive ant, Paratrechina longicornis, was previously found to display a double-clonal reproduction system, whereby both males and queens are produced clonally, resulting in separate male and queen lineages, while workers are produced sexually. Under this unusual reproduction mode, inbreeding is avoided in workers as they carry hybrid interlineage genomes. Despite the ubiquitous distribution of P. longicornis, the significance of this reproductive system for the ant's remarkable success remains unclear, as its prevalence is still unknown. Further investigation into the controversial native origin of P. longicornis is also required to reconstruct the evolutionary histories of double-clonal lineages. Here, we examine genetic variation and characterize the reproduction mode of P. longicornis populations sampled worldwide using microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA sequences to infer the ant's putative native range and the distribution of the double-clonal reproductive system. Analyses of global genetic variations indicate that the Indian subcontinent is a genetic diversity hotspot of this species, suggesting that P. longicornis probably originates from this geographical area. Our analyses revealed that both the inferred native and introduced populations exhibit double-clonal reproduction, with queens and males around the globe belonging to two separate, nonrecombining clonal lineages. By contrast, workers are highly heterozygous because they are first-generation interlineage hybrids. Overall, these data indicate a worldwide prevalence of double clonality in P. longicornis and support the prediction that the unusual genetic system may have pre-adapted this ant for global colonization by maintaining heterozygosity in the worker force and alleviating genetic bottlenecks. A severe negative energy balance and high circulating free fatty acids (FFA) in postpartum cows impair fertility. The lipotoxicity of FFA has been shown to decrease the quality of bovine oocytes in vitro. Therefore, excess FFA in cells is converted to triacylglycerol (TAG), a non-toxic form, to avoid lipotoxicity. We recently reported that the TAG content in oocytes was higher in postpartum lactating cows subjected to grazing management than in heifers (Theriogenology 176: 174-182, 2021). The present study investigated the compositions of the energy metabolism-related lipids, FFA and TAG, in the plasma and oocytes of cows at different lactation stages under indoor intensive feeding management in order to obtain insights into lipotoxicity in oocytes, particularly those in early postpartum cows. Blood and oocytes were collected from 20 lactating cows categorized into the following lactation groups: 20-30 days in milk (DIM) (n = 5), 40-50 DIM (n = 5), 60-80 DIM (n = 5), and 130-160 DIM (n = 5). Daily energy balance data were obtained for 3 weeks prior to oocyte collection using the ovum pick up (OPU) method. The contents and compositions of FFA and TAG in plasma and oocytes were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. As expected, plasma FFA was high at 20-30 DIM, decreased by 50 DIM, and was maintained at a low level for the remainder of the experimental period. Similar changes were observed in oocyte FFA and TAG with DIM as plasma FFA. Oocyte FFA positively correlated with plasma FFA (P 0.05), but negatively correlated with the mean energy balance 1 and 21 days before OPU (P 0.05). Relationships were noted between the composition and content of FFA in plasma and oocytes, with the FFA 16:1/16:0 and 18:1/18:0 ratios positively correlating with the total amount of FFA (P 0.05). Elevated oocyte FFA in cows in the early postpartum period under intensive feeding management suggested that oocytes were at a high risk of FFA lipotoxicity. Furthermore, the present results implied that the severe negative energy balance in the previous few weeks was closely related to increases in oocyte FFA, which supports the importance of long-term cow feeding management for preserving the quality of oocytes in the early postpartum period. The present results provide insights into the effects of high circulating FFA on the fertility of postpartum cows.

The recently proposed NR-ready integrated access and backhaul (IAB) architecture promises to bring a cost-efficient deployment solution for both coverage extension and capacity boosting in future 5G/5G+ systems. While its impact on the coverage extension was thoughtfully addressed in the literature, the effect of advanced functionalities such as multi-hop, multi-connectivity, and multi-beam operations on the throughput remains unclear. We review and characterize the system-level impact of these capabilities on the performance of self-backhauled IAB systems operating in half-duplex mode and utilizing millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology across both access and backhaul. Our results indicate that the throughput gain of multi-hopping and multi-beaming is significant even without multi-connectivity operation. Another important learning is that in all-mmWave systems with link blockage, multi-connectivity with link switching allows achieving self-load balancing. A hallmark of mixed lineage leukemia gene-rearranged (MLL-r) acute myeloid leukemia that offers an opportunity for targeted therapy is addiction to protein tyrosine kinase signaling. One such signal is the receptor tyrosine kinase Fms-like receptor tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) upregulated by cooperation of the transcription factors homeobox A9 (HOXA9) and Meis homeobox 1 (MEIS1). Signal peptide-CUB-EGF-like repeat-containing protein (SCUBE) family proteins have previously been shown to act as a co-receptor for augmenting signaling activity of a receptor tyrosine kinase (e.g., vascular endothelial growth factor receptor). However, whether SCUBE1 is involved in the pathological activation of FLT3 during MLL-r leukemogenesis remains unknown. Here we first show that SCUBE1 is a direct target of HOXA9/MEIS1 that is highly expressed on the MLL-r cell surface and predicts poor prognosis in de novo acute myeloid leukemia. We further demonstrate, by using a conditional knockout mouse model, that Scube1 is required for both the initiation and maintenance of MLL-AF9-induced leukemogenesis in vivo. Further proteomic, molecular and biochemical analyses revealed that the membrane-tethered SCUBE1 binds to the FLT3 ligand and the extracellular ligand-binding domains of FLT3, thus facilitating activation of the signal axis FLT3-LYN (a non-receptor tyrosine kinase) to initiate leukemic growth and survival signals. Importantly, targeting surface SCUBE1 by an anti-SCUBE1 monomethyl auristatin E antibody-drug conjugate led to significantly decreased cell viability specifically in MLL-r leukemia. Our study indicates a novel function of SCUBE1 in leukemia and unravels the molecular mechanism of SCUBE1 in MLL-r acute myeloid leukemia. Thus, SCUBE1 is a potential therapeutic target for treating leukemia caused by MLL rearrangements.

Yi-Qi Cong-Ming (YQCM) decoction has been widely used to prevent age-related hearing loss (ARHL), the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the elderly.To explore the mechanism of YQCM decoction in the treatment of ARHL.The chemical constituents of YQCM were screened from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database. Potential targets of YQCM against ARHL were predicted by DrugBank, GeneCards, and OMIM database. Protein-protein network and enrichment analysis were used for exploring possible molecular mechanisms. Molecular docking and anThe main compounds have good affinities with hub targets, especially AKT1, PTGS2, and CASP3. GO and KEGG analysis showed that the main biological process and key targets were related to negative regulation of the apoptotic process. HOur study suggested that YQCM prevents ARHL by modulating the apoptosis process in auditory hair cells. Moreover, this study proved that bioinformatics analysis combined with molecular docking and cell model is a promising method to explore other possible pharmacological interventions of ARHL.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the governments of different countries adopted, such as locking down cities and restricting travel and social contact. Online health communities (OHCs) with specialized physicians have become an important way for the elderly to access health information and social support, which has expanded their use since the outbreak. This paper examines the factors influencing elderly people’s behavior in terms of the continuous use of OHCs from a social support perspective, to understand the impact of public health emergencies. Research collected data from March to April 2019, February 2020, and August 2021, in China. A total of 189 samples were collected and analyzed by using SmartPLS. The results show that (1) social support to the elderly during different stages has different influences on their sense of community and (2) the influence of the sense of community on the intention to continuously use OHCs also seems to change over time. The results of this study provide important implications for research and practice related to both OHCs and COVID-19.

The warming in the Arctic has induced accelerated changes in coastal topography, such as the retreat of glaciers, thaw of permafrost, and increase of erosion and sedimentation along the coastline. A majority of Svalbard territory has been designated as natural reserves for numerous wildlife, especially on the west coast of Spitsbergen, which has seven locations listed as Ramsar Sites. Therefore, monitoring coastal dynamics is crucial for assessments of the climatic impact on those habitats. This study aims to utilize multiple satellite data, including Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Landsat series to reconstruct time-varying digital elevation models (DEMs) over the intertidal zone of west Spitsbergen. The method includes the following steps: (1) classifying water in an image; (2) stacking images for inundation frequency; (3) converting frequency to elevation via a tide model; (4) repeating the workflow in a five-year temporal window. The latest DEM is verified by ICESat-2 spaceborne LiDAR ATL03 photons. Our preliminary results show that the accuracy of DEM, in terms of standard deviation, achieves 0.5 m level. Slight changes in coastal topography have been observed near Longyearbyen and other outlet glaciers.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are the end products of the fermentation of complex carbohydrates by the gut microbiota. Although SCFAs are recognized as important markers to elucidate the link between gut health and disease, it has been difficult to analyze SCFAs with mass spectrometry technologies due to their poor ionization efficiency and high volatility. Here, we present a novel and sensitive method for the quantification of SCFAs, including C2-C6 SCFAs and their hydroxy derivatives, by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) upon N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (DMED) derivatization with a run time of 10 min. Moreover, the quantification method of DMED-derivatized SCFAs in intestinal contents using isotope-labeled internal standards was also established. The method validation was performed by analyzing spiked intestinal samples; the limits of detection and quantification of SCFAs with this method were found to be 0.5 and 5 fmol, respectively; the recovery was greater than 80% and good linearity (0.9932 to 0.9979) of calibration curves was obtained over the range from 0.005 to 5000 pmol/μL; the intraday and interday precisions were achieved in the range of 1-5%. Furthermore, the validated method was applied to analyze SCFAs in the cecum and colon contents of mice infected with the influenza virus. The results showed that the concentration of most of the SCFAs tested here decreased significantly in a time-dependent manner after the infection, suggesting a possibility that SCFAs in intestinal samples could be used as severe disease markers. Overall, we here successfully developed a simple, fast, and sensitive method for SCFA analysis by LC-MS/MS combined with DMED derivatization. The method for the quantification of SCFAs will be a useful tool for both basic research and clinical studies.

New infestations of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae), were discovered in southern California, namely in Rancho Santa Fe and La Mesa (San Diego County) and Highland Park (Los Angeles County) in 2021. We investigated whether these new infestations were related to the previous infestations in La Mesa (2018) and Canyon Lake, Riverside County (2020). We used two mitochondrial genes (COI and COII) and seven polymorphic microsatellite markers to infer the genetic relationship between southern California colonies and their breeding systems. The samples collected from seven localities belonged to five colonies (inter-colony distances ranged from ~160 m to 185 km, with an average of 97 km). Of these five colonies, two were simple families, and three were extended families. Structure analyses of microsatellite genotypes grouped the termite samples into three distinct genetic clusters, suggesting at least three independent introduction events in southern California.

Best-worst method (BWM) has attracted increasing attention. It has been generalized to different fuzzy environments and applied to various real-life decision problems. This paper develops a new intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) best-worst method (IFBWM) for multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). When a decision maker (DM) makes comparisons, there may be some hesitancies. Thus, the reference comparisons are represented as intuitionistic fuzzy values (IFVs), the Best-to-Others vector and the Others-to-Worst vector are IF vectors. According to the multiplicative consistency of intuitionistic fuzzy preference relation, this paper gives the consistency equations and views them as IF equations. The derivation of optimal IF weights of criteria is formulated as an IF decision-making problem. Thereby, a mathematical programming model is constructed to assure that the derived optimal IF weights of criteria is a normalized IF weight vector. Depending on the risk preference of DM, four linear programming models are presented to obtain the optimal IF weights based on the constructed mathematical programming model for the optimistic DM, the pessimistic DM and the neutral DM, respectively. Furthermore, this paper investigates the process of improving the consistency. Several examples are demonstrated to show the application and effectiveness of the proposed IF BWM.

Recent studies have identified cancer-associated mutations in histone genes that lead to the expression of mutant versions of core histones called oncohistones. Many oncohistone mutations occur at Asp and Glu residues, two amino acids known to be ADP-ribosylated (ADPRylated) by PARP1. We screened 25 Glu or Asp oncohistone mutants for their effects on cell growth in breast and ovarian cancer cells. Ectopic expression of six mutants of three different core histones (H2B, H3, and H4) altered cell growth in at least two different cell lines. Two of these sites, H2B-D51 and H4-D68, were indeed sites of ADPRylation in wild-type (unmutated) histones, and mutation of these sites inhibited ADPRylation. Mutation of H2B-D51 dramatically altered chromatin accessibility at enhancers and promoters, as well as gene expression outcomes, whereas mutation of H4-D68 did not. Additional biochemical, cellular, proteomic, and genomic analyses demonstrated that ADPRylation of H2B-D51 inhibits p300-mediated acetylation of H2B at many Lys residues. In breast cancer cell xenografts in mice, H2B-D51A promoted tumor growth, but did not confer resistance to the cytotoxic effects of PARP inhibition. Collectively, these results demonstrate that functional Asp and Glu ADPRylation sites on histones are mutated in cancers, allowing cancer cells to escape the growth-regulating effects of post-translational modifications via distinct mechanisms. Significance: This study identifies cancer-driving mutations in histones as sites of PARP1–mediated ADP-ribosylation in breast and ovarian cancers, providing a molecular pathway by which cancers may subvert the growth-regulating effects of PARP1.

Background: To explore the clinical significance of miR-125b-5p and its potential mechanisms in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). Materials and Methods: An integrated analysis of data from in-house quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), microRNA-sequencing, and microarray assays to appraise the expression level of miR-125b-5p in LUSC tissues compared to adjacent noncancerous controls. The authors identified the candidate targets of miR-125b-5p and conducted functional analysis using computational biology strategies from gene ontology, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, disease ontology (DO), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analyses to investigate the prospective mechanisms. Results: According to qRT-PCR results, the expression level of miR-125b-5p was markedly decreased in LUSC tissues compared to noncancerous control tissues. Receiver operating characteristic and summary receiver operating characteristic analyses showed that miR-125b-5p had good specificity and sensitivity for distinguishing LUSC tissue from noncancerous lung tissue. The standard mean difference revealed that men and women with lower expression levels of miR-125b-5p may have a higher risk for LUSC. KEGG analysis and DO analysis intimated that target genes were evidently enriched in pyrimidine metabolism and pancreatic carcinoma. The PPI network of the top assembled KEGG pathway indicated that RRM2, UMPS, UCK2, and CTPS1 were regarded as crucial target genes for miR-125b-5p, and RRM2 was eventually deemed a key target. Conclusions: The authors' findings implicate a low expression level of miR-125b-5p in LUSC. A tumor-suppressive role of miR-125b-5p is proposed, based on its effects on LUSC tumor growth, clinical stage progression, and lymph node metastasis.

Given the frequent and largely incurable occurrence of multiple myeloma, identification of germline genetic mutations that predispose cells to multiple myeloma may provide insight into disease etiology and the developmental mechanisms of its cell of origin, the plasma cell (PC). Here, we identified familial and early-onset multiple myeloma kindreds with truncating mutations in lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1/KDM1A), an epigenetic transcriptional repressor that primarily demethylates histone H3 on lysine 4 and regulates hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal. In addition, we found higher rates of germline truncating and predicted deleterious missense KDM1A mutations in patients with multiple myeloma unselected for family history compared with controls. Both monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and multiple myeloma cells have significantly lower KDM1A transcript levels compared with normal PCs. Transcriptome analysis of multiple myeloma cells from KDM1A mutation carriers shows enrichment of pathways and MYC target genes previously associated with myeloma pathogenesis. In mice, antigen challenge followed by pharmacologic inhibition of KDM1A promoted PC expansion, enhanced secondary immune response, elicited appearance of serum paraprotein, and mediated upregulation of MYC transcriptional targets. These changes are consistent with the development of MGUS. Collectively, our findings show that KDM1A is the first autosomal-dominant multiple myeloma germline predisposition gene providing new insights into its mechanistic roles as a tumor suppressor during post-germinal center B-cell differentiation.Significance: KDM1A is the first germline autosomal dominant predisposition gene identified in multiple myeloma and provides new insights into multiple myeloma etiology and the mechanistic role of KDM1A as a tumor suppressor during post-germinal center B-cell differentiation. The western yellowjacket, Vespula pensylvanica (Saussure), is an important seasonal pest of recreational and outdoor venues in the western United States. Its propensity to scavenge food increases the likelihood of stinging incidences. Control measures are limited to intensive trapping and treating subterranean nests. The only toxicant registered for baiting in the US is esfenvalerate, which is ineffective. The objective of this study was to determine the potential of the isoxazoline fluralaner as a bait toxicant. With microsatellite genotyping, a minimum of 27 different colonies were shown to forage at a single monitoring site. Some colonies disappeared after baiting, and new colonies were detected. The implications for baiting and monitoring are discussed. Minced chicken and hydrogel baits containing 0.022% and 0.045% fluralaner significantly reduced foraging yellowjackets. Several bait applications covering large areas will be necessary to provide long-term control.

Exploring novel molecularly-targeted therapies for endometrial carcinoma is important. The current study explored the potential anti-endometrial carcinoma activity by a first-in-class POLRMT (RNA polymerase mitochondrial) inhibitor IMT1. In patient-derived primary human endometrial carcinoma cells and established lines, treatment with IMT1 potently inhibited cell viability, proliferation, cell-cycle progression and motility, while inducing robust caspase-apoptosis activation. Treatment with the PLORMT inhibitor impaired mitochondrial functions, leading to mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) transcription inhibition, mitochondrial membrane potential decline, reactive oxygen species formation, oxidative stress and ATP loss in the endometrial carcinoma cells. Similarly, POLRMT depletion, through shRNA-induced silencing or CRISPR/Cas9-caused knockout (KO), inhibited primary endometrial carcinoma cell proliferation and motility, and induced mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. Importantly, IMT1 failed to induce further cytotoxicity in POLRMT-KO endometrial carcinoma cells. Contrarily, ectopic overexpression of POLRMT further augmented proliferation and motility of primary endometrial carcinoma cells. In vivo, oral administration of a single dose of IMT1 substantially inhibited endometrial carcinoma xenograft growth in the nude mice. mtDNA transcription inhibition, oxidative stress, ATP loss and apoptosis were detected in IMT1-treated endometrial carcinoma xenograft tissues. Together, targeting PLORMT by IMT1 inhibited endometrial carcinoma cell growth in vitro and in vivo.

The diversity and community assembly mechanisms of eukaryotic plankton in coastal waters is so far not clear. In this study, we selected the coastal waters of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which is a highly developed region in China, as the research area. By use of high-throughput sequencing technologies, the diversity and community assembly mechanisms of eukaryotic marine plankton were studied in which a total of 7,295 OTUs were obtained, and 2,307 species were annotated by doing environmental DNA survey of 17 sites consist of surface and bottom layer. Ultimately, the analysis reveals that the species abundance of bottom layer is, by and large, higher than that in the surface layer. In the bottom, Arthropoda is the first largest group, accounting for more than 20% while Arthropoda and Bacillariophyta are dominant groups in surface waters accounting for more than 40%. It is significant of the variance in alpha-diversity between sampling sites, and the difference of alpha-diversity between bottom sites is greater than that of surface sites. The result suggests that the environmental factors that have significant influence on alpha-diversity are total alkalinity and offshore distance for surface sites, and water depth and turbidity for bottom sites. Likewise, the plankton communities obey the typical distance-decay pattern. Analysis about community assembly mechanisms reveals that, overall, dispersal limitation is the major pattern of community formation, which accounts for more than 83% of the community formation processes, suggesting that stochastic processes are the crucial assembly mechanism of the eukaryotic plankton community in the study area.

Three new species of Alexeter Förster, 1869 are reported from China, A. flavicoxa Li & Sun sp. nov. collected from Sichuan, A. flaviventris Li & Sun sp. nov. from Beijing, Guizhou and A. melanicus Li & Sun sp. nov. from Guizhou. A key to species of Alexeter known in China is provided.
