Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and remains a major economic and social burden. Although our understanding of cancer at the molecular level continues to improve, more effort is needed to develop new therapeutic tools and approaches exploiting these advances. Due to its high efficiency and accuracy, the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technique has recently emerged as a cancer treatment strategy. Among its many applications, CRISPR-Cas9 has shown an unprecedented clinical potential to discover novel targets for cancer therapy and to dissect chemical-genetic interactions, providing insight into how tumors respond to drug treatment. Moreover, CRISPR-Cas9 can be employed to rapidly engineer immune cells and oncolytic viruses for cancer immunotherapeutic applications. More importantly, the ability of CRISPR-Cas9 to accurately edit genes, not only in cell culture models and model organisms but also in humans, allows its use in therapeutic explorations this review, important considerations for the use of CRISPR/Cas9 in therapeutic properties are discussed, along with major challenges that will need to be addressed before clinical examinations for a complex and polygenic disease such as cancer. This review aimed to explore the potential of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technique as a cancer treatment strategy. Specifically, we will discuss how CRISPR-Cas9 can be used to discover novel targets for cancer therapy and to dissect chemical-genetic interactions.

Due to the limited success of therapeutic strategies in treating tumors, a new practical potent approach is needed. This review aimed to investigate previous literature related to tumors and Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis). In recent years, there has been growing interest in utilizing biological, viral, bacterial, yeast, and parasitic agents to cure cancers. According to several studies, some parasites could interferee with the tumors’ growth. There has been much discussion about some parasites’ applications to cure tumors in animals and humans. In studies, T. spiralis was found to have antitumor properties. The active proteins in T. spiralis, such as Caveolin-1, Heat shock proteins, and Ribosomal proteins, are thought to inhibit the growth of cancers, such as melanoma, myeloma, sarcoma, leukemia, stomach cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer. In addition, these proteins are thought to induce apoptosis in specific neoplastic cells. Accordingly, antigens derived from parasites may be helpful in cancer immunotherapy. However, there are still many unanswered questions regarding Trichinella spiralis’ potential use as a biotherapy agent against cancer. Future studies should focus on the purification of parasite antigens and their use for wider-scale trials in animal models.

Introduction: Trichomonas gallinae (T. gallinae) infects numerous species of birds worldwide. Many antiprotozoal drugs have been utilized for therapeutic purposes. Herbal plants extracts do not result in drug resistance or tissue residue; therefore, they are a dependable and safe substitute for treating trichomoniasis. The current study, the antitrichomonal properties of three herbal plants (Quercus infectoria, Artemisia annua, and Allium sativum) were compared to those of metronidazole in pigeons. Materials and methods: In this experiment, 32 pigeons were used, each of which was divided into four groups with four replicates. All groups were experimentally infected with T. gallinae except for group D. Group A was treated with a herbal mixture (80% Quercus infectoria extract, 11% Artemisia annua extract, and 9% Allium sativum extract [standardized to 8% total tannic acid]; Coccyphyt-L®; Makian Dam Pars Science-Based Company), while Group B was given metronidazole. The positive control group C was experimentally infected but not treated with T. gallinae, while group D remained healthy throughout the experiment. The experiment consisted of a performance index, weight gain, wet mount, and biochemical and hematological examination. Results: Compared to metronidazole, the treatment with a herbal mixture significantly reduced the pathogenic effects of Trichomonas spp. After a week of treatment, chickens in group A were nearly healthy and, in some respects, superior to those in the metronidazole treatment group. Conclusion: In conclusion, the antiprotozoal properties of the aforementioned herbal mixture suggest its use as an alternative antitrichomonal agent to chemotherapeutic drugs in trichomoniasis treatment.

Background: Molecules secreted by Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) have beneficial effects on the immune system and can fight against cancer by inhibiting the growth of tumor cells, preventing angiogenesis, and promoting immune activation. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of molecules secreted by Trypanosoma cruzi on the growth of colon and breast cancer cells, to understand the underlying mechanisms of action. Results: Calreticulin from T. cruzi, a 45 kDa protein, participates in essential changes in the tumor microenvironment by triggering an adaptive immune response, exerting an antiangiogenic effect, and inhibiting cell growth. On the other hand, a 21 kDa protein (P21) secreted at all stages of the parasite's life cycle can inhibit cell invasion and migration. Mucins, such as Tn, sialyl-Tn, and TF, are present both in tumor cells and on the surface of T. cruzi and are characterized as common antigenic determinants, inducing a cross-immune response. In addition, molecules secreted by the parasite are used recombinantly in immunotherapy against cancer for their ability to generate a reliable and long-lasting immune response. Conclusion: By elucidating the antitumor mechanisms of the molecules secreted by T. cruzi, this study provides valuable insights for developing novel therapeutic strategies to combat colon and breast cancer.

Abstract: Breast cancer is a major cause of cancer deaths in women, with approximately 1.2 million new cases per year. Current treatment options for breast cancer include surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy. However, the non-selective cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents often leads to severe side effects, while drug resistance can worsen patient outcomes. Therefore, the development of more effective and less toxic anticancer drugs is a critical need. This study aimed to review the literature on Echinococcus granulosus antigens with anticancer potential against triple-negative breast cancer. Recent studies have suggested that certain parasite antigens may have potential anticancer effects. Specifically, research has shown that echinococcosis, a disease caused by the parasitic cestode Echinococcus granulosus, may have a protective effect against cancer. These findings offer new insights into the potential use of E. granulosus antigens in the development of novel cancer therapies and tumor cell vaccines. The findings of recent studies suggested that E. granulosus antigens may have the potential to be used in effective and less toxic cancer treatments. However, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind the anticancer effects of these antigens and develop new cancer therapies and vaccines

Coccidiosis is a critical disease in the poultry industry worldwide. Producers apply different strategies to control and prevent this disease. Herbal drugs are suitable remedies for reducing losses associated with coccidiosis in poultry. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an herbal mixture in preventing coccidiosis. A total of 160 broiler chickens were divided into four treatment groups, with five replicates for each. Experimental infection of all groups, except group D, was carried out with mixed Eimeria species (E. tenella, E. necatrix, E. brunetti, and E. maxima) on day 14. Broiler chickens in group A were given an herbal mixture (75% Quercus infectoria, 16% Artemisia annua, and 9% Allium sativum) as feed additives during the rearing period, and group B was treated with Monensin. No treatment was applied to group C after the chickens were experimentally infected with mixed Eimeria spp. Group D was used as the negative control since chickens in this group were not infected or sick during the experiment. Body weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), mortality rate, intestinal lesion scoring, and oocyst count per gram (OPG) were evaluated in this study. The results of the present study revealed that the highest mean body weight was gained in group D, followed by chickens in group A. The best FCR results were attributed to chickens in group D, followed by group B. In this study, both drugs decreased mortality rate, intestinal lesion scores, and OPG in the treated chickens. In conclusion, this herbal mixture can reduce coccidial lesions. Keywords: Broiler, Coccidiosis, Herbal mixture, Prevention

Background We conducted a cross-sectional study of indigenous breeds of horses from the north and northeast of Iran to establish the prevalence and distribution of Eimeria species. Material and Methods 340 fecal samples from randomly selected horses (141 from the north of Iran and 199 from the northeast of Iran) were examined for Eimeria oocyst using standard coprological techniques. Results Out of 340 samples, only 3 from north Iran were positive for coccidiosis. Two infections occurred by E. leuckarti species, and one infection happened by E. uninugulata. The mean intensity of oocyst output (3–38 o.p.g.) was very low. No clinical signs of gastrointestinal disorder were noticed in any horses during this study. Conclusion This study reports for the first time on the prevalence of E. uninugulata in horses from farms in North Iran. A more comprehensive study in different rural areas of Iran would be advantageous to develop a better understanding of the molecular identification and characterization of Eimeria species and strengthen the knowledge we currently have.

Avian coccidiosis is thought to be one of the most expensive infectious diseases in the poultry industry.Safe and alternative anti-coccidial drugs are herbal extracts because they do not result in tissue residue and drug resistance. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anti-coccidial effect of the herbal mixture, a complex of two plants (Echinacea purpurea, Glycyrrhiza glabra) in broiler chickens in comparison with toltrazuril.One hundred twenty broiler chickens were used in this experiment and divided into 4 equally numbered groups. All the groups, except Group D, were experimentally infected with mixed Eimeria spp. (E. Tenella, E. maxima, E. necatrix and E. brunetti) on day 14. Group A treated with an herbal mixture [Glycyrrhiza glabra Extract 5% (standardised to 5.4% glycyrrhizic acid) and Echinacea purpurea Extract 2% (standardised to 4% total phenolic content based on chlorogenic acid); Coxinin-ECPositive control group had the poorest results and more mortality than other groups. Group D was not infected and was healthy all the experiment period. Treatment with herbal complex significantly reduced the negative performance and pathogenic effects associated with Eimeria spp. at a level that was comparable with toltrazuril.In summary, the anti-coccidial activity of the studied herbal complex suggests its use as an alternative anti-coccidial agent to chemotherapeutic drugs for controlling coccidiosis in poultry.-Coccidiosis is an important infectious disease that causes serious financial loss to the poultry industry. -Chemical anti-coccidial drugs and vaccines are the main control strategies to combat the disease. However, these tools have some constraints. -Herbal remedies are suitable alternatives to chemical compounds for control of losses associated with coccidiosis in poultry. -An herbal mixture (Echinacea purpurea, Glycyrrhiza glabra) has promising effects for controlling of coccidiosis in broiler chickens.

The purpose of the current study was to assess the anticoccidial effect of an herbal complex of 3 plants (Artemisia Annua, Quercus infectoria, and Allium Sativum) in broiler chickens in comparison with toltrazuril anticoccidial. One hundred twenty broiler chickens were used in this experiment and divided into 4 equally numbered groups. All the groups, except group (D), were experimentally infected whit mixed Eimeria spp. (E. Tenella, E. maxima, E. necatrix and E. brunetti) on day 14. Group (A), was treated whit an herbal mixture. Group (B), was treated whit Toltrazuril. Group (C), was experimentally infected with mixed Eimeria spp. But they didn’t have any treatment, this group was our positive control, as expected, this group had the poorest results and more mortality than other groups. Group (D), wasn't infected and was healthy all the experiment period, this was our negative control. Performance indices, fecal oocyst excretion, and intestinal lesion score were determined during the experiment. Treatment with an herbal complex significantly reduced the negative performance and pathogenic effects associated with Eimeria spp. at a level that was comparable with toltrazuril. In summary, the anticoccidial activity of the mentioned herbal complex recommends its use as an alternative anticoccidial agent to chemotherapeutic drugs for controlling coccidiosis.

Stray cats and dogs are the major risk factors for human toxocariasis and one of the most important public health issues. Accessing and analyzing the prevalence of Toxocara spp. in definitive host may help control and prevention of human toxocariasis. This systematic review and meta-analysis is the first study in Middle east, directed to estimate the prevalence of Toxocara cati, Toxocara canis and Toxocara leonina infection in cats and dogs by gender, age, geographical location, weather condition and other risk factors. Three English databanks (Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar) were searched for published articles about Toxocara parasites of cats and dogs in Middle-East from 1980 to 2022. Of 300 peer-reviewed articles, 40 were included in this review and represented cats and dogs from all over the Middle east countries. The collective prevalence (95% CI) of Toxocara cati infection in stray cats was 7.66%, being highest in north of Iran and lowest in Qatar countries. The collective prevalence (95% CI) of Toxocara canis infection in stray dogs was 26.34%, being highest in north of Iran and lowest in Israel countries. The collective prevalence (95% CI) of Toxocara leonina infection in stray cats and dogs was 2.85%, being highest in Egypt and lowest in Qatar countries. Prevalence of Toxocara leonina was higher in low-income tropical countries and also in young (12 months of age) cats and dogs and also higher in humid weather like north of Iran. Control prevention and of this zoonosis should take greater care by health officials particularly in countries where risk factors and prevalence are highest.

Sarcocystosis is an important parasitic zoonosis caused by Sarcocystis species, an intracellular protozoan parasite of the Apicomplexa phylum and one of the most prevalent parasitic diseases among wild and domestic animals all around the world. Infection in the definitive host is mainly characterized by the formation of cysts in muscle tissue. In intermediate host skeletal muscles, diaphragm and heart are the favored locations for Sarcocystis spp. While we were examining the heart of a dead, three-month old lamb, incidentally, we observed striking, white and discrete spots, measuring 2-3 mm, that were diffusely distributed in endocardium. Microscopically, numerous sarcocysts were seen within cardiomyocyts and purkinje fibers. No different pathological modifications had been found in inflamed muscle fibers or surround interstitium. To the best of our knowledge, there is no case report about diffuse involvement of endocardium by Sarcocystis spp. and this uncommon form of sarcocystosis prompted us to place the current case on record.
