A modern conceptual design of a bridge structure should be open to wider criteria, which assure that the structure is endowed with static, dynamic, and ductile characteristics sufficient to tackle the seismic events. Correct conception of the structural morphology, other than the achievement of better guarantees with regard to the seismic behavior, may also lead to economic advantages either in the realization of the whole structural system or in the adoption of seismic devices, with a consequent possible reduction of the management cost of the structure as well. For the satisfaction of these requirements and for the exploration and the verification of innovative structural schemes, refined and subtle analysis formulations and tools must be considered. Such a kind of structural scheme is based on the two-blade slender bridge piers. These are elements subdivided into two parts with different geometric and mechanical properties. The first part has a box section, which is highly stiff. Two flexible blades connected to the top compose the second part. Because of the uncertainties involved in the problem, the geometrical and mechanical properties that define the structural problem cannot be considered as deterministic quantities. Expedient simulations and numerical modelling of forming processes depend on a good knowledge of the friction at the tool–sheet metal contact. The absolute value of the friction force or relative changes of this force due to changing conditions are vital input for a reliable numerical model. For that reason, a good selection of a laboratory experiment that can measure the friction under forming conditions is an essential step. This work is part of a large European Union project named ASPECT, which evaluates the friction force evolution in sheet metal forming as a result of changes in contact conditions. Simplified tribological lab-scale techniques showed an temperature dependence of friction opposite to what is measured in state-of-the-art macroscopic flat strip drawing tests. To understand and overcome this contradiction, a new method was developed to integrate the deformation aspect into a friction test; this approach assures closer resemblance to the actual forming conditions. The aim is to develop a method that measures the effect of temperature and speed on the resistance to sliding and deformation, and to provide an efficient prescreening and ranking of forming oils.

Three approaches for construction of a surrogate model of a result field consisting of multiple physical quantities are presented. The first approach uses direct interpolation of the result space on the input space. In the second and third approaches a Singular Value Decomposition is used to reduce the model size. In the reduced order surrogate models, the amplitudes corresponding to the different basis vectors are interpolated. A quality measure that takes into account different physical parts of the result field is defined. As the quality measure is very cheap to evaluate, it can be used to efficiently optimize hyperparameters of all surrogate models. Based on the quality measure, a criterion is proposed to choose the number of basis vectors for the reduced order models. The performance of the surrogate models resulting from the three different approaches is compared using the quality measure based on a validation set. It is found that the novel criterion can effectively be used to select the number of basis vectors. The choice of construction method significantly influences the quality of the surrogate model.

While society benefits from Arctic shipping, it is necessary to recognize that ship operations in Arctic waters pose significant risks to people, the environment, and property. To support the management of those risks, this article presents a comprehensive approach addressing both short-term operational risks, as well as risks related to long-term extreme ice loads. For the management of short-term operational risks, an extended version of the Polar Operational Limit Assessment Risk Indexing System (POLARIS) considering the magnitude of the consequences of potential adverse events is proposed. For the management of risks related to long-term extreme ice loads, guidelines are provided for using existing analytical, numerical, and semi-empirical methods. In addition, to support the design of ice class ship structures, the article proposes a novel approach that can be used in the conceptual design phase for the determination of preliminary scantlings for primary hull structural members.

In this work, metamodel-based robust optimization is performed using measured scatter of noise variables. Principal component analysis is used to describe the input noise using linearly uncorrelated principal components. Some of these principal components follow a normal probability distribution, others however deviate from a normal probability distribution. In that case, for more accurate description of material scatter, a multimodal distribution is used. An analytical method is implemented to propagate the noise distribution via metamodel and to calculate the statistics of the response accurately and efficiently. The robust optimization criterion as well as the constraints evaluation are adjusted to properly deal with multimodal response. Two problems are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach and to validate the method. A basketball free throw in windy weather condition and forming of B-pillar component are presented. The significance of accounting for non-normal distribution of input variables using multimodal distributions is investigated. Moreover, analytical calculation of response statistics, and adjustment of the robust optimization problem are presented and discussed.

With the recent surge in development of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea, Bohai Sea and other ice-prone regions, a need has arisen for new basin tests to qualify the interaction between offshore wind turbines and sea ice. To this end, a series of model tests was performed at the Aalto ice basin as part of the SHIVER project. The tests were aimed at modeling the dynamic interaction between flexible, vertically-sided structures and ice failing in crushing. A real-time hybrid test setup was used which combines numerical and physical components to model the structure. This novel test setup enabled the testing of a wide range of structure types, including existing full-scale structures for which ice-induced vibrations have been documented, and a series of single-degree-of-freedom oscillators to obtain a better understanding of the fundamental processes during dynamic ice-structure interaction. The tests were primarily focused on the dynamic behavior of support structures for offshore wind turbines under ice crushing loads. First results of the campaign show that the combination of the use of cold model ice and not scaling time and deflection of the structure can yield representative ice-structure interaction in the basin. This is demonstrated with experiments during which a scaled model of the Norströmsgrund lighthouse and Molikpaq caisson were used. The offshore wind turbine tests resulted in multi-modal interaction which can be shown to be relevant for the design of the support structure. The dataset has been made publicly available for further analysis.

In hot stamping severe tool wear occurs. The main tool wear mechanism is the so-called compaction galling, in which fractured particles from the coating of the part (blank) being build-up and become compacted upon the tools. Since fractured particles play an important role in the wear mechanism, fracture of the AlSi coating is investigated. For this purpose, simplified B-pillar parts are pressed at several temperatures to investigate the effect of temperature, strain and tool contact on the fracture behavior of the AlSi coating. Three positions which exhibit different strain modes are analysed by means of optical topography and optical microscopy measurements. The results indicate a strong correlation between the AlSi coating fracture, strain and temperature. For instance, at relatively low forming temperatures (i.e. 650 ºC), mode I fracture as well as spallation of the coating and at higher temperatures (750 and 800 ºC) mainly mode I coating fractures are observed. Interestingly, this type of mode I coating fractures are found to widen, eventually giving rise to mode II coating fractures along the coating-substrate interface. The onset strain of coating fracture is low and approximately at strains of 0.017, coating cracks are observed at all start temperatures. At contact-dominated regions, additional coating cracks are observed mainly due to a drop in blank temperature and added shear stresses due to the relative sliding between the blank and tools.

A panoptic view of architectured planar lattices based on star-polygon tilings was developed. Four star-polygon-based lattice sub-families, formed of systematically arranged triangles, squares, or hexagons, were investigated numerically and experimentally. Finite-element-based homogenization allowed computation of Poisson's ratio, elastic modulus, shear modulus, and planar bulk modulus. A comprehensive understanding of the range of properties and micromechanical deformation mechanisms was developed. Adjusting the star-polygon angle achieved an over 250-fold range in elastic modulus, over a 10-fold range in density, and a range of $-0.919$ to $+0.988$ for Poisson's ratio. Additively manufactured lattices, achieved by novel printing strategies, showed good agreement in properties. Parametric additive manufacturing procedures for all lattices are available on \url{www.fullcontrol.xyz/#/models/1d3528}. Three of the four sub-families exhibited in-plane elastic isotropy. One showed high stiffness with auxeticity at low density and a primarily axial deformation mode as opposed to bending deformation for the other three lattices. The range of achievable properties, demonstrated with property maps, proves the extension of the conventional material-property space. Lattice metamaterials with Triangle-Triangle, Kagome, Hexagonal, Square, Truncated Archimedean, Triangular, and Truncated Hexagonal topologies have been studied in the literature individually. Here, it is shown that these structures belong to the presented overarching lattice family.

In this paper we alleviate limitations of the conventional embedded reinforcement formulation for applications with dense fiber contents. We demonstrate that by condensing the fiber degrees of freedom during the assembly stage, the condition number of the resultant stiffness matrix is effectively reduced and the use of iterative solvers is facilitated even without preconditioning. Numerical benchmarks consisting of very large numbers of high aspect ratio discrete fibers are performed, and major advantages are reported in terms of the computational efficiency of the solution method. We apply the solution method to a set of examples in the modeling of the fiber reinforced composites, specifically the estimation of the homogenized mechanical properties of the discontinuous fiber composites and modeling of the compression molding process. In the latter case, a specimen containing more than 2 million discrete fibers is analyzed.

Background Flow curves can easily be obtained by uniaxial tensile tests, but strains are then limited by diffuse necking. For many applications, the flow stress must be known above this limit. Objective The main objective of this paper is to obtain flow curves for material with low uniform elongation to relatively high strains compared to a uniaxial tensile test. Method A novel in-plane sheet bending experiment and stress evaluation procedure is presented. The developed bending device can be mounted in a tensile test machine and can produce very high bending curvatures compared to previously proposed pure bending setups. The bending angle and curvature are obtained by image processing and the bending moment is calculated directly from the force measured from the tensile test machine and the bending angle. The moment–curvature relation is used to determine the uniaxial stress–strain relation using an analytical approach, without presuming any hardening model. The bending process and the analytical procedure are validated by a numerical simulation as well as by experiments. Results The numerical validation shows good agreement between the stress–strain curve obtained from the bending process and that of the uniaxial input flow curve up to 12% strain. Experimentally the model is validated by comparing the stress–strain curve obtained from the bending test with the results directly obtained from a tensile test for mild steel. Good agreement is observed up to 12% strain. As an application example, bending tests were performed on a martensitic steel (MS) with low uniform strain (less than 3%). For this material, flow curves could be obtained up to relatively high strains (~12%), compared to a tensile test. Conclusion This bending test setup allows to study materials with low uniform elongation up to significantly higher strains than are readily obtained in a tensile test.

Despite all the efforts to optimize the meniscus prosthesis system (geometry, material, and fixation type), the success of the prosthesis in clinical practice will depend on surgical factors such as intra-operative positioning of the prosthesis. In this study, the aim was therefore to assess the implications of positional changes of the medial meniscus prosthesis for knee biomechanics. A detailed validated finite element (FE) model of human intact and meniscal implanted knees was developed based on a series of in vitro experiments. Different non-anatomical prosthesis positions were applied in the FE model, and the biomechanical response during the gait stance phase compared with an anatomically positioned prosthesis, as well as meniscectomized and also the intact knee model. The results showed that an anatomical positioning of the medial meniscus prosthesis could better recover the intact knee biomechanics, while a non-anatomical positioning of the prosthesis to a limited extent alters the knee kinematics and articular contact pressure and increases the implantation failure risk. The outcomes indicate that a medial or anterior positioning of the meniscus prosthesis may be more forgiving than a posteriorly or laterally positioned prosthesis. The outcome of this study may provide a better insight into the possible consequences of meniscus prosthesis positioning errors for the patient and the prosthesis functionality. Surrogate modelling is a powerful tool to replace computationally expensive nonlinear numerical simulations, with fast representations thereof, for inverse analysis, model-based control or optimization. For some problems, it is required that the surrogate model describes a complete output field. To construct such surrogate models, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) can be used to reduce the dimensionality of the output data. The accuracy of the surrogate models strongly depends on the (pre)processing actions that are used to prepare the data for the dimensionality reduction. In this work, POD-based surrogate models with Radial Basis Function interpolation are used to model high-dimensional FE data fields. The effect of (pre)processing methods on the accuracy of the result field is systematically investigated. Different existing methods for surrogate model construction are compared with a novel method. Special attention is given to data fields consisting of several physical meanings, e.g. displacement, strain and stress. A distinction is made between the errors due to truncation and due to interpolation of the data. It is found that scaling the data per physical part substantially increases the accuracy of the surrogate model.

Model-scale experiments were performed to explore the process of level ice interacting with a, in model-scale, ten-meter-wide inclined structure in shallow water. During each experiment, an initially intact ice sheet was pushed against the sloping structure, failed against it and accumulated into a grounded rubble pile in front of it. The strength of the model ice used in the experiments was varied. The spatial and temporal ice load distributions were measured at two scales: the structure was divided into ten identical segments along its waterline with the horizontal load on each segment measured, while the local pressure distributions were simultaneously measured with tactile sensors from two of the segments. This paper focuses on the relationships between the loads on different segments and the correlation between global and local loads. The load records of the individual segments during the whole experiment correlated with each other. The Pearson correlation coefficient for the load records of two neighboring segments was about 0.8, and for segments having a distance of 5 m or more, about 0.4. The magnitudes of both the maximum and the mean load on each segment were approximately equal. Even if the segment loads correlated during the whole experiment, the load records of the individual segments showed also transient ice load peaks, which did not correlate. These were used to define local peak load events and related local line loads, defined by dividing the magnitude of a peak load by its width in space. Roughly 2/3 of the local peak load events concentrated on one segment and only about 5% of them covered more than three segments. Narrow local peak load events caused the local line loads of the highest magnitude, with the magnitude and the relative frequency of the events increasing with the ice strength. Narrow events resulted in local line loads up to four times higher than the global line load, which was defined by dividing the total load on the structure by its width. The investigation of the local peak load events also showed that an inclined structure having a width of approximately 5 m (the ice thickness to structure width ratio of 1:100) appeared infinitely wide and gave similar results as a wider structure. Ice pressure measurements showed a line-like pressure distribution at the waterline of the structure with the weakest ice, whereas with stronger ice, zones of high ice pressure were observed at upper parts of the segments.

In this paper, a comparison is made between two multiscale methods, namely crystal plasticity finite element and mean field on a material composed of two phases. Both methods are used to homogenize a given microstructure. In order to obtain macroscopic behavior, in the mean field approach, a Self-Consistent scheme is used to evaluate stress and strain partitioning among the phases. In this method, an average of the fields is estimated and local distributions cannot be captured. In parallel, crystal plasticity simulations on Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) composed of hexagonal grains are performed. In these simulations, grain orientations are attributed randomly respecting Mackenzie's distribution function in order to achieve isotropic behavior and macroscopic hardening is extracted from the simulations. The results on macroscopic hardening of both methods are compared to distinguish the extents of validity of mean field homogenization. In addition to Self- Consistent, other mean field schemes such as Voigt, Reuss and Bound-Interpolation are compared in terms of efficiency and accuracy. The comparison manifests that Self-Consistent scheme is capable of predicting material behavior well.

This work studies the Voce–Chaboche (V–C) material model parameter optimization for high-strength steel welded joints subjected to cyclic loading. The model parameters of each material zone in a S690 steel butt-welded joint were determined using an optimization algorithm based on the Newton trust region (NTR) method and an accumulated true strain parameter. The model parameters were fitted to stress–strain histories from uniaxial strain-controlled cyclic tests. To validate the model, fully-reversed variable amplitude fatigue experiments were performed under load control. The experimental results were then compared to numerical results from a finite element analysis. When the elastic modulus is optimized as a V–C parameter, the results indicate that the V–C model slightly underestimates the strain range, leading to conservative fatigue life estimates. However, the results can be improved by using an elastic modulus obtained experimentally. In this case, the resulting material model slightly overestimates the strain range, leading to a non-conservative, but more accurate, fatigue life estimation. It can be concluded that the NTR-based accumulated true strain approach successfully determined the V–C model parameters for different material zones in the welded joint, and closely estimated the strain range and the fatigue life for a variable amplitude load history.

The retained austenite (RA) in advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades, such as dual-phase (DP) steels, plays an important role on their formability. Thanks to the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect that occurs during the mechanically induced transformation of RA into martensite, additional ductility is obtained. Martensite has a higher flow stress than austenite; hence, the transformation results in an apparent hardening, which is beneficial for the stability of deformation. The stability of RA at a given temperature strongly depends on its carbon content, which, in AHSS, is not uniform but distributed. The aim of this study is to build a model that predicts the transformation as well as TRIP in a DP steel grade with RA. A physics-based kinetic model is presented that captures the transformation of retained austenite based on the thermodynamic driving force of the applied stress. A direct analytical estimate of transformation plasticity is provided, which is consistent with the kinetic model. Transformation kinetics is incorporated in a self-consistent, mean-field homogenization-based constitutive model. Finally, an indication of the effect of transformation of retained austenite on formability is given.

While force–displacement curves are often preferred in Small Punch (SP) tests due to the ease of the experimental set-up, they encompass significant uncertainties arising from frame compliance. In this work, a methodology is presented to predict yield stresses from the force vs. deflection curves. The present method relies on determining different force levels from the initial part of the force–deflection curve to reflect both the slope and the curvature instead of using a single force level only. The predicted yield stresses for different types of materials, that is, low- and high-strength alloys, are found to be in good agreement with the actual proof stresses with a maximum error of 16%.

Understanding the mechanical behavior of sea ice is the basis of applications of ice mechanics. Laboratory-scale work on saline ice has often involved dry, isothermal ice specimens due to the relative ease of testing. This approach does not address the fact that the natural sea ice is practically always floating in seawater and typically has a significant temperature gradient. To address this important issue, we have developed equipment and methods for conducting compressive loading experiments on floating laboratory-prepared saline ice specimens. The present effort describes these developments and presents the results of stress-controlled sinusoidal cyclic compression experiments. We conducted the experiments on dry, isothermal (−10 ∘C) ice specimens and on floating-ice specimens with a naturally occurring temperature gradient. The experiments involved ice salinities of 5 and 7 ppt, cyclic stress levels ranging from 0.04–0.12 to 0.08–0.25 MPa and cyclic loading frequencies of 0.001 to 1 Hz. The constitutive response and energy dissipation under cyclic loading were successfully analyzed using an existing physically based constitutive model for sea ice. The results highlight the importance of testing warm and floating-ice specimens and demonstrate that the experimental method proposed in this study provides a convenient and practical approach to perform laboratory experiments on floating ice.

As AlSi-coated press hardening steel is heated to austenitization temperatures, various Fe − Al intermetallic compounds (e.g. FeAl, Fe2Al5 etc.) and voids are generated throughout the coating, increasing also the surface roughness. The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of coating surface roughness, voids and intermetallic distribution on AlSi coating fracture during its deformation at elevated temperatures. For this purpose, hot tensile experiments and finite element (FE) analyses are conducted to understand crack initiation and propagation in the coating. The coating − substrate FE model is built, taking the realistic distributions of intermetallics, voids and surface profile into account. The FE model is calibrated to experiments and the sensitivity of coating fracture to the distributions of intermetallics, voids and surface profile is analyzed. According to FE simulation results, coating fracture is minimized either by increasing the content of FeAl intermetallic or by reducing the void fraction in AlSi coating. Furthermore, to validate the aforementioned numerical prediction, the heating stage parameters are modified to reproduce coating micro-structure from the FE model. Hot tensile experiments on the samples with modified heating parameters confirm the FE simulation results, showing a similar decline in coating crack density. In conclusion, the AlSi coating fracture during hot tensile deformation depends on its micro-structure, which is mainly generated during the heating stage. Furthermore, the results also suggest that coating − substrate FE simulations can be utilized as a tool to achieve a suitable coating micro-structure which minimizes coating fracture.

Metallic implants are commonly used as surgical treatments for many orthopedic conditions. The long-term stability of implants relies on an adequate integration with the surrounding bone. Unsuccessful integration could lead to implant loosening. By combining mechanical loading with high-resolution 3D imaging methods, followed by image analysis such as Digital Volume Correlation (DVC), we aim at evaluating ex vivo the mechanical resistance of newly formed bone at the interface. X-rays tomography is commonly used to image bone but induces artefacts close to metallic components. Utilizing a different interaction with matter, neutron tomography is a promising alternative but has not yet been used in studies of bone mechanics. This work demonstrates that neutron tomography during in situ loading is a feasible tool to characterize the mechanical response of bone-implant interfaces, especially when combined with DVC. Experiments were performed where metal screws were implanted in rat tibiae during 4 weeks. The screws were pulled-out while the samples were sequentially imaged in situ with neutron tomography. The images were analyzed to quantify bone ingrowth around the implants. DVC was used to track the internal displacements and calculate the strain fields in the bone during loading. The neutron images were free of metal-related artefacts, which enabled accurate quantification of bone ingrowth on the screw (ranging from 60% to 71%). DVC allowed successful identification of the deformation and cracks that occurred during mechanical loading and led to final failure of the bone-implant interface.

Incremental sheet forming has, despite its great flexibility, not yet been widely adopted by the forming industry, due to its limited geometric accuracy. One of the approaches to overcome this problem is the development of closed-loop control systems. Such control systems are mostly based on linearization with respect to a nominal toolpath. In this work, different approaches to create such linearized process models are reviewed. By implementing the models in a numerical simulation of a model predictive control system for incremental sheet forming, it is investigated how manufacturing accuracy is affected by the chosen linearization. Based on these results, the validity of the most commonly used linearization method is critically discussed. Furthermore, it is shown that the geometric accuracy can be improved by extending the process model with a time-varying component that contains historical information about past control actions.

In deep drawing processes, mixed lubrication friction regime is common in which the friction condition is governed by solid–solid asperity contacts and lubricant pressure. In this study, a friction model in the mixed lubrication regime is developed that accounts for the effect of the surface topographies of sheet and tool on the lubricant pressure distribution. The overall friction due to solid–solid asperity contacts and lubricant pressure is determined using a coupled hydrodynamic and boundary friction models. The model is utilized in an in-house FE code (DiekA) for deep drawing simulations. In the FE simulations, the lubricant pressure is determined by solving the average Reynolds equation. The flow factors required in the average Reynolds equation are determined separately using measured tool and sheet surface topographies. Cross-die experiments are performed at different lubricant amounts to validate the friction model at a component level. The results show that punch force vs. displacement and strain field from experiments and FE simulations (using the new friction model) correlate very well.

Background In ACL-reconstructed patients the postoperative knee biomechanics may differ from the intact knee biomechanical behavior which can alter knee kinematics and kinetics, and as a result lead to the progression of knee osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potential of finite element models to define the optimal choices in surgical parameters in terms of optimal graft positioning in combination with graft type in order to restore the kinematic and kinetic behavior of the knee as best as possible. Methods A workflow was proposed based on cadaveric experiments in order to restore the injured knee to a near normal physiological condition. Femoral and tibial graft insertion sites and graft fixation tension were optimized to obtain similar intact knee laxity, for three common single-bundle and one double-bundle reconstructions. To verify the success of the surgery with the variables calculated using the proposed workflow, a full walking cycle was simulated with the intact, ACL-ruptured, optimal ACL-reconstructed and non-optimal reconstructed knees. Results Our results suggested that for patellar tendon and hamstring tendon grafts, anatomical positioning (fixation force: 40 N), and for quadriceps tendon graft, isometric positioning (fixation tension: 85 N) could recover the intact joint kinematics and kinetics. Also for double-bundle reconstruction, with the numerically calculated optimal insertion sites, both bundles needed 50-N fixation force. Conclusions With optimal graft positioning parameters, following the proposed workflow in this study, any of the single-bundle graft types and surgical techniques (single vs. double-bundle) may be used to acceptably recover the intact knee joint biomechanical behavior.

The growth of existing voids in the microstructure is governed by the localized plastic deformation around their boundaries. These voids are initially around an order of magnitude smaller than the grain size of common metallic materials. Consequently, the plastic deformation around the void can be reasonably well approximated by the crystal plasticity finite modeling approach. On the other hand, due to the intrinsic size scales involved, the gradient of the plastic strain will be very large which is known to result in generation of significant amounts of Geometrically Necessary Dislocations. These have a direct influence on the governing equations of plasticity and hence the growth process. Therefore, the proposed approach takes into account hardening based on dislocation densities which include the GNDs as a source of dislocations. The generation of GNDs is modeled using a gradient enhancement in the finite element simulation. The growth of voids are qualitatively compared to experimental results found in the literature.

Return mapping algorithms are popular procedures for evaluating elasto-plastic material behaviour. This paper presents a dedicated return mapping algorithm for thin walled pipes and vessels with Von Mises plasticity and isotropic hardening, for which it can be assumed that the hoop stress is constant. This applies for example to pipe line sections during offshore laying operations. In the algorithm a nonlinear scalar equation is solved iteratively. A general 3D radial return mapping algorithm with an iteration loop to fulfil the assumptions on hoop and radial stress is used to verify results obtained with the dedicated algorithm. Results of both algorithms are identical, while the new algorithm is more efficient.

A time-domain Legendre spectral-element method is described for full-wave simulation of ocean acoustics models, i.e., coupled fluid-solid problems in unbounded or semi-infinite domains, taking into account shear wave propagation in the ocean bottom. The technique can accommodate range-dependent and depth-dependent wave speed and density, as well as steep ocean floor topography. For truncation of the infinite domain, to efficiently absorb outgoing waves, a fluid-solid complex-frequency-shifted unsplit perfectly matched layer is introduced based on the complex coordinate stretching technique. The complex stretching is rigorously taken into account in the derivation of the fluid-solid matching condition inside the absorbing layer, which has never been done before in the time domain. Two implementations are designed: a convolutional formulation and an auxiliary differential equation formulation because the latter allows for implementation of high-order time schemes, leading to reduced numerical dispersion and dissipation, a topic of importance, in particular, in long-range ocean acoustics simulations. The method is validated for a two dimensional fluid-solid Pekeris waveguide and for a three dimensional seamount model, which shows that the technique is accurate and numerically long-time stable. Compared with widely used paraxial absorbing boundary conditions, the perfectly matched layer is significantly more efficient at absorbing both body waves and interface waves.

This work aims at investigating the applicability of the level-set based thickness optimization method, earlier proposed by the authors, to a realistic structure. The design has to have sufficient stiffness and strength while the structural mass is minimized. The concerned composite structure is subjected to multiple load cases. The proposed method guarantees the fulfillment of the design guidelines, namely symmetry, covering ply, disorientation, percentage rule, balance, and contiguity of the layup. The stiffeners divide a composite structure into several smaller panels. The manufacturability of a resulting design is guaranteed as plies are continuous among adjacent panels (the design is blended). The proposed method is successfully applied to the mass minimization problem of the stiffened top and bottom skin of a wing torsion box. The structure, subject to two load cases, is optimized where local buckling and allowable strain are the constraints of the problem.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the combination of x-ray tomography during triaxial tests (“in-situ” tests) and 3D- volumetric Digital Image Correlation (3D-DIC) can provide important insight into the mechanical behaviour and deformation processes of granular materials such as sand. The application of these tools to investigate the mechanisms of failure in rocks is also of obvious interest. However, the relevant applied confining pressures for triaxial testing on rocks are higher than those on sands and therefore stronger pressure containment vessels, i.e., made of thick metal walls, are required. This makes in-situ x-ray imaging of rock deformation during triaxial tests a challenge. One possible solution to overcome this problem is to use neutrons, which should better penetrate the metal-walls of the pressure vessels. In this perspective, this work assesses the capability of neutron tomography with 3D-DIC to measure deformation fields in rock samples. Results from pre- and post-deformation neutron tomography of a Bentheim sandstone sample deformed ex-situ at 40MPa show that clear images of the internal structure can be achieved and utilised for 3D-DIC analysis to reveal the details of the 3D strain field. From these results the character of the localised deformation in the study sample can thus be described. Furthermore, comparison with analyses based on equivalent x-ray tomography imaging of the same sample confirms the effectiveness of the method in relation to the more established x-ray based approach.

Metal implants, in e.g. joint replacements, are generally considered to be a success. As mechanical stability is important for the longevity of a prosthesis, the biological reaction of the bone to the mechanical loading conditions after implantation and during remodelling determines its fate. The bone reaction at the implant interface can be studied using high-resolution imaging. However, commonly used X-ray imaging suffers from image artefacts in the close proximity of metal implants, which limit the possibility to closely examine the bone at the bone-implant interface. An alternative ex vivo 3D imaging method is offered by neutron tomography. Neutrons interact with matter differently than X-rays; therefore, this study explores if neutron tomography may be used to enrich studies on bone-implant interfaces. A stainless steel screw was implanted in a rat tibia and left to integrate for 6weeks. After extracting the tibia, the bone-screw construct was imaged using X-ray and neutron tomography at different resolutions. Artefacts were visible in all X-ray images in the close proximity of the implant, which limited the ability to accurately quantify the bone around the implant. In contrast, neutron images were free of metal artefacts, enabling full analysis of the bone-implant interface. Trabecular structural bone parameters were quantified in the metaphyseal bone away from the implant using all imaging modalities. The structural bone parameters were similar for all images except for the lowest resolution neutron images. This study presents the first proof-of-concept that neutron tomographic imaging can be used for ex-vivo evaluation of bone microstructure and that it constitutes a viable, new tool to study the bone-implant interface tissue remodelling.

International audience; We study frictionless and non-adhesive contact between elastic half-spaces with self-affine surfaces. Using a recently suggested corrective technique, we ensure an unprecedented accuracy in computation of the true contact area evolution under increasing pressure. This accuracy enables us to draw conclusions on the role of the surface’s spectrum breadth (Nayak parameter) in the contact area evolution. We show that for a given normalized pressure, the contact area decreases logarithmically with the Nayak parameter. By linking the Nayak parameter with the Hurst exponent (or fractal dimension), we show the effect of the latter on the true contact area. This effect, undetectable for surfaces with poor spectral content, is quite strong for surfaces with rich spectra. Numerical results are compared with analytical models and other available numerical results. A phenomenological equation for the contact area growth is suggested with coefficients depending on the Nayak parameter. Using this equation, the pressure-dependent friction coefficient is deduced based on the adhesive theory of friction. Some observations on Persson’s model of rough contact, whose prediction does not depend on Nayak parameter, are reported. Overall, the paper provides a unifying picture of rough elastic contact and clarifies discrepancies between preceding results.

International audience; We present a computational model, which combines interface debonding and frictional contact, in order to investigate the response of concrete specimens subjected to dynamic tensile and compressive loading. Concrete is modeled using a meso-mechanical approach in which aggregates and mortar are represented explicitly, thus allowing all material parameters to be physically identified. The material phases are considered to behave elastically up to failure and the initiation, coalescence and propagation of cracks are modeled by dynamically inserted cohesive elements. The impenetrability condition is enforced by a contact algorithm that resorts to the classical law of Coulomb friction. We show that the proposed model is able to capture the general increase in strength with increasing rate of loading and the tension/compression asymmetry. Moreover, we simulate compression with lateral confinement showing that the model reproduces the increase in peak strength with increasing confinement level. We also quantify the increase in the ratio between dissipated frictional energy and dissipated fracture energy as the confining pressure is augmented. Our results demonstrate the fundamental importance of capturing frictional mechanisms, which appear to dissipate substantially more energy than cracking under compressive loading.

International audience; Strain localisation plays a key role in the deformation of granular materials. Such localisation involves bands of just a few grains wide, which dominate the material's macroscopic response. This grain-scale phenomenon presents challenges for continuum modelling, which is the rationale behind models that explicitly take micro-scales into account. These in turn require micro-scale experimental analysis. In this work, X-ray tomography is used to image a small sample of oolitic sand while it deforms under triaxial compression. Grains are followed with a technique combining recent developments in image correlation and particle tracking. From these rich data, the evolution of the material in a subvolume of a thousand grains inside the sample (which contains 53 000 grains) is presented. The subvolume is chosen to lie inside the shear band that appears at the sample scale. Three-dimensional (3D) grain kinematics are analysed in three increments: the beginning of the test, the peak of the sample's macroscopic axial stress response and the residual stress state. When the sample's deformation is homogeneous (increment one) or fully localised (increment three), the kinematics of the grains in the subvolume appear to be representative of the kinematics occurring at the sample scale, allowing micro-mechanical observations to be made. In the transition from homogeneous to localised deformation (increment two), however, the scale of observation requires a zoom out of the subvolume to the sample scale in order to capture the complex mechanisms at play.

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2014, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2014, Çok küçük ölçekli düzenek ve sistemlerin malzemeleri buharlaştırarak biriktirme yolu ile üretilebileceği fikrini ilk olarak 1959 yılında ünlü fizikçi Richard Feynman ileri sürmüştür [1]. Bu anlamda, Mikro-Elektro-Mekanik Sistemler (MEMS) küçük ölçekli elektro-mekanik düzeneklerin ve sistemlerin incelendiği bir bilim dalı olarak sonradan Feynman’ın öngördüğü vizyonu doğrular biçimde ortaya çıkmış ve gelişmiştir. Mikro ve nano sistemlerin bu kadar çok ilgi toplamalarının nedenleri arasında makro boyuttaki mekanik sistemlerin mikro ve nano boyutta küçültülerek üretilmesinde hacimsel kuvvetlerin (ağırlık/atalet) önemini yitirmelerinden ötürü mekanik bakımdan çok hızlı sistemlerin gerçekleştirilebilmesi, yüksek ivmeli hareketlerin mümkün olması, daha az yer kaplamaları, enerji tasarrufu sağlamaları, seri üretimlerinin mümkün olması gibi pek çok faydayı gösterebiliriz [2]. Belirtilen bu nedenlerden dolayı, nano ve mikro mekanik sistemlerin günümüzde mürekkepli yazıcılar, hava yastıkları, ışınımölçerler, basınçölçerler, mesafeölçerler, nano ve mikro filtreler, ve rezonatörler gibi pek çok alanda uygulamaları bulunmaktadır. Çok sayıda araştırma grubunun üzerinde çalıştığı önemli konulardan birisi de kavramsal ve uygulamalı mekanik titreşim ve rezonanstır, ve bu çabalar pek çok yeni mekanik ve elektronik cihaz üretimine yolaçmıştır. Bu alandaki çalışmalar, mikro ve nano ölçekteki Mikro-Elektro-Mekanik Sistemler/Nano-Elektro-Mekanik Sistemler (MEMS/NEMS)’in mümkün olması ile makro boyuttaki titreşimlerden, bu minyatür boyutlu yapıların titreşimlerinin incelenmesine doğru kaymaya başlamıştır [3-16]. Makro-boyutlu yapıların mikro/nano-boyutlara küçültülerek üretilmesi, Literatür Özeti’nde de bahsedildiği üzere daha küçük ebatlarda ve birbirine daha yakın mesafelerde yapılar kullanılacağından, hareket ve enerji transferi esnasında gerçekleşecek kayıpların çok daha küçük olmasına ve dolayısıyla da MRA’nın minyatür ebatlarda kullanımının çok daha etkin ve işlevsel bir biçimde gerçekleştirilebilmesine olanak sağlayacaktır. Bu çalışma ile mikro/nano-boyutlu ankastre kirişlerde MRA kullanılarak çok düşük frekanslardan çok yüksek frekanslara kadar geniş bir bant aralığında rezone edilebilen mikro/nano-kirişler üzerinden temassız ve yüksek hızlı hareket ve mekanik enerji transferinin gerçekleştirilmesi çalışılmıştır. Bu tezde, mikro/nano-boyutlu iki ucu sabitlenmiş (ankastre, cantilever) kirişler üzerinde Mekanik Rezonans Absorpsiyon (Mechanical Resonance Absorption, MRA)’u kullanarak titreşim hareketi ve enerjisinin yüksek verimlerde temassız (non-contact) olarak transferi üzerinde durulmuştur. Aslında, MRA-temelli hareket ve enerji transferi makro-boyutlu yapılarda da hâlihazırda gerçekleştirilmekte olup, büyük ebat ve mesafeler kullanılmasından dolayı düşük etkinlikte performans gözlenmektedir, bu nedenle mühendislik uygulamalarında kullanımı çoğunlukla tercih edilmemektedir. Diğer yandan, MRA, mikro/nano-boyutlu yapılarda kullanılması halinde, hacimsel kuvvetlerin gözardı edilebilecek seviyelere düşmesinden dolayı yüksek hız ve yüksek tahrik ivmelerine dayanım, daha az yer kaplama, daha az enerji tüketimi, seri üretim halinde çok ucuz ve çok daha yüksek performanslarda hareket ve enerji transferi sağlayan cihazların gerçeklenmesine yolaçacaktır. Bu çalışmada, spesifik olarak nano-boyutlu ankastre bir kirişin rezonans frekansında zorlanmış salınımı (titreştirilmesi) ile ortaya çıkan hareket ve mekanik enerjinin yakınındaki eşdeğer bir başka ankastre kiriş tarafından Mekanik Rezonans Absorpsiyonu (Mechanical Resonance Absorption, MRA) ve bu sayede transferini sağlamak, mekanik absorpsiyon ile hareket ve enerjinin düzlem-içi (in-plane) ve düzlem-dışı (out-of-plane) doğrultularda iletim performansını gözlemleme ve ölçme suretiyle karakterize etmek, bu transferin maksimum seviyede gerçekleştirilebilmesi için gerekli optimum mesafe ve boyutları belirlemek, ve sözkonusu hareket ve enerji transferinin kontrolünü gerçekleştirebilmek için muhtemel müdahale biçimlerini belirlemek hedeflenmiştir. Tez kapsamında ankastre kirişlerin birbirlerine göre mesafeleri, ve boyutları dolayısıyla rezonans frekansları da değiştirilerek mesafe ve kiriş geometrilerinin performans üzerindeki etkileri çalışılmış ve optimum enerji transferi için en uygun kesit geometrileri ve kirişler arası mesafeler belirlenmiştir. Büyük oranda düzlem-içi hareket aktarımı çalışılması ile birlikte, düzlem-dışı aktarıma dair en temel anlamda enerji transferi de incelenmiştir. İlk olarak FEA tabanlı analiz programlarında simülasyon yoluyla kirişlerin doğal frekansları ve çalışma parametreleri belirlenmiştir. Farklı kiriş geometrisi ve konumlama mesafeleri için FEA analizleri tekrarlanarak bu parametrelerin hareket ve enerji transferi üzerindeki etkileri nümerik olarak tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışma ile üzerinde herhangi bir tahrik elemanı yeralmadan tahrik edilmek istenen sistemler, fiziksel temas olmadan (non-contact), hava molekülleri üzerinden hareket ve enerji transferi sağlanarak tahrik edilebilecektir. Böylelikle sistemler üzerinde temaslı tahrikle ilgili problemler ortadan kaldırılmış, üretimlerinde ve karakterizasyon testlerinde büyük kolaylıklar sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. Bu bölümde son olarak, oluşturulan hava ortamının, sonsuz bir ortam gibi davranması ve hedef kirişin oluşturduğu akustik dalgaları sönümleyerek geri-yansımasının engellenmesi için kullanılan absorpsiyon katmanı (Perfectly Matched Layers, PML)’nın sönümleme işlemi ve akustik elemanlarda özellik olarak tanımlanması anlatılmıştır. Dördüncü bölümde, ilk olarak kirişler arasındaki hareket ve enerji transferinin incelenmesinde kullanılacak kirişlerin kesit geometrilerinin gösterimi, birbirlerine göre konumlandırılmaları, uygulanan kuvvet ve kuvvetin uygulanma doğrultusu ile tahrik edilen ve enerjinin aktarıldığı kirişlerin gösterimi gibi çalışmanın ilgili kavramı açıklanmıştır. İlk kısımda, enerji transfer oranları kare ve dikdötrtgen şekilli olmak üzere iki farklı kesit geometrisi üzerinde, düzlem-içi ve düzlem-dışı olmak üzere iki farklı yerleşim durumunda ve farklı geometrik boyutlar için farklı mesafe değerlerinde rezonans frekansı bölgesi etrafındaki bir bantta çalışılmıştır. İkinci kısımda ise ilk kısımda elde edilen bilgiler doğrultusunda sadece düzlem-içi yerleştirilmiş dikdörtgen kesitli kirişler arasındaki mesafeye bağlı enerji transfer oranları viskoz sönüm etkisi altında incelenmiş ve elde edilen sonuçlar sunulmuştur. Tezin altıncı bölümünde ise yapılan çalışmalar sonucunda elde edilen veriler değerlendirilerek mesafe ve kiriş geometrilerinin performans üzerindeki etkileri ve optimum enerji transferi için en uygun kesit geometrileri ve kirişler arası mesafeler belirlenmiştir., The famous physicist Richard Feynman suggested the idea that very small-scale apparatus and systems produced by evaporating and collecting materials are possible first in 1959 [1]. In this sense, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) have subsequently emerged and developed confirming the vision provided by Feynman as a science investigating small-scale electro-mechanical setup and systems. Research on micro/nano-scale structures is indeed spreading day-by-day. Since the volume force in micro/nano-scale systems is at significantly low levels compared to that in larger systems, micro/nano-systems can move mechanically faster and with high acceleration, are compact, and provide energy savings [2]. Hence, MEMS have applications in many fields such as ink printers, airbags, bolometers, pressure gauges, distance meters, micro/nano-filters and resonators. One of the major issues studied by a large number of research groups is conceptual and practical mechanical vibration and resonance. A large number of researchers have targeted miniaturized structures at micro/nano-scales, which has given rise to production of many new mechanical and electronic devices [3-16]. In this thesis, a novel technique for non-contact motion and energy transfer between micro/nano-scale doubly-clamped cantilever beams at high efficiency via Mechanical Resonance Absorption (MRA) is presented. In order to characterize quality of the transfer, resonating beam dimensions and distances, in-plane and out-of-plane transmission directions, and effect of damping by the environment are comprehensively investigated. In this study, energy interaction via MRA between two identical micro/nano cantilever beams positioned at certain distances relative to each other are examined. In addition, creating fields of application in micro/nano-scale structures, such as remote drive and selective resonance are targeted by achieving the regular relationship between energy transfer values and distance changes. Then, energy transfer is analyzed for various distances and geometries. Use of micro/nano-scale beams not only increases the efficiency of energy transfer, but also it eases fabrication, testing and characterization, particularly at oscillations with high-frequency vibrations. In the first chapter of the thesis, brief information on the aim, scope and solution steps of the study is given and previous studies associated with the thesis topic such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), micro/nano-scale vibration, Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW), motion and energy transfer and Mechanical Resonance Absorption (MRA) are referred under the scope of literature study. The second chapter, first, information about the general forms of Euler Bernoulli, Rayleigh and Timoshenko Beam Theories have been introduced. Then, vibration equations have been described for single and multi-degrees of freedom systems, and derivation of analytical formulations required for the calculation of natural frequencies and bending vibrations in beams have been shown. βnL values used in the calculation of natural frequencies are listed for different boundary conditions. In the third chapter, Finite Element Method (FEM) has been mentioned briefly, and after a brief introduction about the element type used in the FEA are given, Acoustic Fluid-Structure Coupling in FEM is explained and the expression of acoustic waves is presented. Then, mechanical energy transfer between the beams via MRA is simulated. Acoustic element types are defined for the air to show acoustic properties in a commercial FEM analysis software, namely ANSYS (ANSYS Inc., USA) and necessary environment characteristics for the element types are summarized. Finally, the absorbing layer (Perfectly Matched Layers, PML) behaving as an infinite medium of modeled air environment in order to prevent back-reflection by absorbing the acoustic waves created by the target beam are described. In the fourth chapter, initially, such concepts as representation of the cross-section of the beam geometries used in the investigation of motion and energy transfer between the beams, relative positioning, the direction of the applied force, and representation of the source and target beam are studied. Then, the interaction model, material properties, acoustic element types in air, and the program codes required to define the fluid-structure interaction between air and the beams in FEA software are described. In the fifth chapter, energy transfer rates are studied numerically in various beam distances for two different cases where first, viscous damping ratio is neglected and, then considered. At first, ETR values are studied in a band about resonance frequency for two cross-section geometries as in square and rectangular shapes, at two settlement status as in-plane and out-of-plane, and with several geometrical dimensions. In the second half, ETR values depending on the distance between the beams with rectangular cross-section at in-plane alignment are examined under the influence of viscous damping, and the results are presented based on the data obtained in the first half of the chapter. In the sixth chapter, obtained data are evaluated. Then, the effects of distance and the beam geometry on the performance are investigated, and the most suitable cross-sectional geometry and distance between the beams for optimum energy transfer are determined., Yüksek Lisans, M.Sc.

Çubukların statik davranışlarını ifade eden denklemlerden hareketle dinamik davranışlarını ifade eden denklemlere ulaşılmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı; eğri eksenli sürekli değişken kesitli düzlemsel çubukların düzlem dışı titreşim problemlerini, başlangıç değerleri yöntemi (matrikant) ile kayma deformasyonu ve hem eğilme hem de burulma dönme eylemsizliği etkilerini de dikkate alarak, analitik olarak çözmektir. Birinci bölümde, çubuk teorisi üzerine kısa bir giriş yapılmış ve çalışmanın amacı ve kapsamı belirtilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, eğri eksenli çubuklar ile ilgili literatürdeki çalışmalar incelenmiş ve bu çalışmalarda kullanılan yöntemler kısaca anlatılmıştır. Genelde sonlu elemanlar ve çeşitli enerji metotları kullanılarak yapılan çözümlerin birçoğunda eksenel uzama, kayma deformasyonu ve dönme eylemsizliği etkilerinin ihmal edilmekte olduğu gözlenmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde eğri eksenli çubukların genel denklemleri( yer değiştirme, denge ve bünye) ile bu denklemlere bağlı olarak düzlem içi ve düzlem dışı titreşim denklemlerine yer verilmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde değişken kesitli eğrisel çubukların düzlem dışı titreşimlerinin analitik çözümü matrikant yöntemi kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Matrikant yöntemi hakkında bilgi verilip, basit bir sayısal örnekle açıklanmaya çalışılmış ve yöntemin titreşim problemlerine uygulanışı detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Beşinci bölümde, literatürdeki çalışmalar incelenip, matrikant yöntemi kullanılarak bulunan sonuçlarla karşılaştırılmıştır. Diferansiyel denklemleri çözerken Matlab paket programından faydalanılmış ve çözümü yaparken kullandığımız program ile ilgili çeşitli optimizasyonlar yapılarak en hızlı ve en yakın çözüm için hangi parametrelerin kullanılması gerektiği hesaplanmıştır. Altıncı bölümde, bazı sayısal örnekler sonlu elemanlar yöntemi ile çözülmüştür. Ansys ve Abaqus analiz programları kullanılarak elde edilen sonuçlar literatürdeki ve matrikant yöntemindeki sonuçlarla karşılaştırılmıştır. Yedinci bölümde ise çalışmanın sonuçları tartışılmış ve bu konudaki çalışmaların nasıl geliştirilebileceği konusunda bazı öneriler sıralanmıştır., The purpose of the present study is to give the approximate solution to the governing equations of out-of-plane dynamic problems of a curved beam with varying cross-sections and to exhibit the advantages of the solution. These governing equations solved by using the optimizated matricant method and compared between the other studies results. In the vibration problems of this study, the effects of axial extension, shear deformation and rotatory inertia due to torsional vibrations are taken into account. The matricant method is used in order to solve the governing differential equations. In the first chapter, general concepts of the theory of beams and the aim of the present study are given.In the second chapter, the studies in the literature on dynamic problems of curved beams with varying cross-section are reviewed. Reviewing the literature has shown that although a few papers deal with the out of plane dynamic behavior of arches with varying cross-section, many excellent papers are present with in-plane dynamic behavior of arches with non-uniform cross-section and variable curvatures. With the advancement of computer technology, arch problems are solved widely by using finite element method and many finite elements were developed for this purpose. If the behavior of the arch is non-planar, then a usual finite element model of this arch becomes very complicated with many degrees of freedom. In these cases, it is evident that a model, which, with a relatively few degrees of freedom, offers a good description of the behavior of the arch, is needed. In the third chapter, the governing differential equations of curved beam are given for the static and dynamic problems. The beam is represented by a space curve whose every point is coupled with a rigid orthonormal vector diad. The vectors are chosen to be perpendicular to the tangent vector of the space curve in the initial state and they represent the cross-section of the beam. In the deformed configuration, these directors still remain unit and perpendicular each other because of the assumption of a rigid cross-section. The matricant (initial value) method explained and applied for the vibration problems of curved beams in the fourth chapter. In this method, the curvature and the cross-section of the arch are considered as variable. The axial extension, shear deformation and rotatory inertia effects are also considered in the governing differential equations of free vibrations. In the fifth chapter, the problems in the literature which interest of dynamic behavior of curved beams with continuous varying cross-section and variable curvature are solved by using the matricant method and the comparisons between the results are given in the tables and figures. Clamped-clamped, clamped-free and free-free boundary conditions are studied for different opening angles. The effects of step ratio, location of the step, boundary condition and opening angle on frequency coefficients are studied. Mostly use clamped-clamped boundary conditions, because the axial extension, shear deformation and rotatory inertia effects are more changeable than other beam types. The mode transition phenomenon is also investigated and the mode shapes are given in figures. The transformation phenomenon is characterized by the sharp increase in frequencies of modes that occurs at certain combinations of curvature and length of the beam. This increase in mode frequencies is accompanied by a significant change in the mode shapes. There is still no comprehensive analysis of the transformation phenomenon and there are no proper explanations and methods for prediction the frequencies of an arch. This is possibly due to the fact that numerical simulations, commonly employed for the analyses, provide little analytical insight into the vibrational problem. Also the Matlab code, which we use to solve matricant equations, is optimized. All results and parameters are observed. Best parameters for this program are chosen by solution time and accuracy. This process is never done in previous literature and it is a really good example for further studies. In the sixth chapter, general information about the finite element analysis and ABAQUS, which is a commercially available finite element program, are given. The experimental studies and numerical solutions of curved beams are given. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical solution for two different curved beams at different boundary conditions. Thanks to ABAQUS the natural frequencies and mode shapes of beams are also compare with the experimental results. The results show that experimental, analytical and finite element solutions are in good agreement with each other. Also the results show that the geometry of the archs are really important to get a healthy solutions. There were some differencies between circular and elliptic archs. The study results are discussioned and some suggestions are made to improve method in advance in the last chapter. Teknolojinin de hızlı gelişmesi ile sadece göreceli olarak düşük doğal frekanslara sahip basit yapılar değil, karmaşık parçalar veya yapılar da aktif titreşim kontrolü uygulamaları için uygun adaylar haline gelmiştir. Bu tez çalışmasında, tek tarafından sabitlenmiş diğer tarafından serbest bırakılmış çelik bir çubuğun aktif kontrolü uygulamasının zaman ve frekans tabanında incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bölüm 3’de, Aktif titreşim kontrolü çalışmalarında kullanılan deney düzenekleri, bu çalışmaların başarıya ulaşması ve uygulanacak denetleyici düzeneklerinin kararlılığı açısından önem arz etmektedir. Bu sebeple düzenekte görevlendirilmiş her bir elemanın özellikleri ayrı ayrı incelenmelidir. Hem kapalı hem de açık döngülerde görevlendirilmiş her bir eleman ayrıntılarıyla işlenmiştir. Deneysel çalışmalarda eyleyici olarak elektrodinamik modal sarsıcı kullanılmış, algılayıcı olarak ise lazer ölçüm cihazı sistemde görevlendirilmiştir. Lazer ölçüm cihazı kullanılmasının temassız ve kararlı bir ölçüm sağlanmasının dışında, ölçülen sinyaller, lazer ölçüm denetleyicisi ile deplasman ve hız olarak çıkış sinyallerine çevrilebilmektedir. Bu şekilde eyleyiciye geri beslenecek olan sinyal kolayca deplasman, hız veya ivmeye dönüştürülmüştür. Kullanılan eyleyicinin çubuk yapısına olumsuz etkileri incelenmiş ve raporlanmıştır. Eyleyiciye beslenecek sinyallerin güç yükselticisinden geçirilerek sisteme geri uygulanması planlanmıştır. Bu sayede, geri beslenecek sinyalin orantısal genliği müdahale edilebilir bir hale getirilmiştir. Ayrıca, çubuğun serbest tarafının uç noktasına bir ivmeölçer yerleştirilmiş ve kullanılan kontrol döngülerinin getirdiği faydaların zaman tabanında belirlenmesi için kullanılmıştır. Bu ivmeölçer sayesinde anlık olarak ölçülmüş sistem tepkisiyle herhangi bir algılayıcının birbirleri arasındaki faz açılarını belirlemekte kullanılmış, frekans tabanında yapılacak çalışmalarında referans algılayıcısı görevini üstlenmiştir. Deneysel çalışmaların tümü darbe çekici eylemiyle gerçeklemiş, bu çekiçten okunan darbe kuvveti ve algılayıcılardan okunan çıkış sinyalleri hesaplamalarıyla frekans tepki fonksiyonları oluşturulmuştur. Buna ek olarak, sistem niteliklerinin ve tepkilerinin deneysel olarak belirlenmesi için gerçekleştirilmiş temel çalışmalar açıklanmıştır. Çelik çubuğun deneysel modal analizi tamamlanmış ve ilk üç rezonans frekansı ile beraber modal sönüm değerleri ve rezonans genlikleri deneysel olarak belirlenmiştir. Deneylerde kullanılması amacıyla basit bir kapasite ve direnç devresi olan analog alçak geçiren süzgeç devre tasarlanmış, devreye giren ve çıkan sinyaller arasında oluşan faz açısı deneysel olarak belirlenmiştir. Bu devrenin tasarlanma amacı, yapıya geri beslenecek sinyal genliklerinin yükseltilmeden önce devrede bulunan ayarlanabilir direnç ile istenilen faz açısını sağlayabilmektir. Böylece deneysel sistemden kaynaklı istenmeyen faz açılarının düzenlemesinin yanı sıra geri besleme kontrolcü türünün de ayarlanabilir hale getirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bölüm 4 ise aktif titreşim kontrolü deneysel çalışmaları, zaman tabanında yapılan çalışmalar ve frekans tabanında yapılan çalışmalar olarak iki alt başlığa ayrılmıştır. Böylelikle, ayrı ayrı gerçekleştirilen deplasman, hız ve ivme geri beslemeli kapalı çevrimlerin sonuçları detaylıca incelenebilmiştir. Frekans tabanında yapılan çalışmalarda ek olarak analog faz kaydırıcı devre kullanılmasıyla geri beslenecek sinyalin faz açılarının istenilen değere getirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Zaman tabanında yapılan açık döngü çalışmalarında, herhangi bir geri beslemeye maruz bırakılmamış çubuğun darbe çekici uyarısıyla birlikte verdiği tepki ölçülmüş ve geri besleme kapalı döngü deneysel düzeneklerinin aynı uyarılma ile verdiği tepkiler karşılaştırılırmıştır. Çubuğun serbest ucundan açık döngü durumundaki titreşim genlikleri ölçülmüş, ayrı ayrı uygulanan deplasman, hız ve ivme geri beslemeli kapalı döngü sistemlerin titreşim genliklerinin çok daha düşük seviyelere getirilebildiği gözlemlenmiştir. Bu sonuçlarda, deplasman ve ivme geri beslemeli düzenek durumlarının bu seviyede sönümleme etkisi oluşturması, sistem üzerine uygulanan kontrol sinyallerinin istenilen faz açılarında uygulanamadığını işaret etmektedir. Frekans tabanında yapılan çalışmalarda ise yapının kontrol sinyallerine maruz kalmadığı açık döngü durumunda frekans tepki fonksiyonları çıkartılmıştır. Böylelikle herhangi bir geri besleme kontrolcüsünün sistem üzerine oluşturduğu değişikliklerinin gözlemlenmesine referans sağlamıştır. Ayrıca sisteme geri uygulanan sinyallerin zaman tabanında anlık olarak ölçülmesi ve birbirleri arasındaki faz ilişkilerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla, frekans tepki fonksiyonlarının ölçümlerinde, ilgili algılayıcıların ve geri beslenen sinyallerin zaman tabanında kaydı tutulmuştur. İlk olarak gerçekleştirilen deneysel çalışmalarda, deplasman geri beslemeli deney düzeneğinde lazer deplasman ölçümleri ile sisteme geri beslenen eyleyici sinyallerinin arasındaki faz ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Hesaplanan değerin, ölçülen faz açısının gerisinde olması, kapalı döngü sisteminde hem ek bir direngenlik sağladığı hem de ek sönüm uyguladığı sonucunu çıkartmıştır. Geri besleme sinyallerinin arttırılması ile kademeli olarak ölçümler alınmış, frekans tabanında sırasıyla karşılaştırmalar yapılmıştır. Buna göre, sistemin birinci modu %15,1 yükseltilmiş ancak istenilmeyen bir sönüm etkisinin de uygulandığı raporlanmıştır. İkinci olarak yapılan deneysel çalışmada lazerden ölçülen hız sinyalleri sisteme geri beslenmiş, frekans tabanında yapılan ölçümlerde anlık alınan zaman sinyallerinin faz açısı ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Beklenildiği üzere eyleyici ucunda bulunan kuvvet sensörü ile lazer hız ölçümü sinyalleri arasında tam 90 derece faz farkı belirlenmiştir. Frekans tabanında yapılan çalışmalarda, çubuğun birinci modundaki titreşim genliklerinin %42.1 düşürüldüğü tespit edilmiştir. Lazer algılayıcıdan ölçülen deplasman sinyalinin sisteme ivme geri besleme sinyali olarak uygulanması için lazer algılayıcı kafasının yeri eski yerinin tam karşısına geçirilmiş böylelikle ölçülen deplasman sinyalinin tersi olan ivme sinyalleri sisteme geri beslenebilmiştir. Yani yapıya uygulanacak kontrol kuvveti çubuğun hareket ettiği doğrultu ile aynı doğrultuda olacaktır. Böylece, sistem üzerinde ek bir kütle etkisi uygulanmış olacaktır. Sonuçlar beklenildiği üzere ivme geri besleme sinyallerinin uygulandığı kapalı döngü sistemi ile çubuğun birinci doğal frekansını daha düşük frekanslara çektiğini göstermiştir. Ancak, eyleyici sinyali ile algılayıcı sinyalinin aynı faz açısında olması beklenirken, eyleyici sinyali algılayıcı sinyalinin gerisinde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Zaman tabanında da öngörüldüğü üzere ek olarak beklenmeyen sönüm etkisinin gerçekleştiği görülmüştür. Öte yandan güç yükselticisinden geri beslenen sinyal genliği arttırıldıkça, fazlar istenildiği gibi aynı faz açısı değerine getirilebildiği gözlemlenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda çubuğun ilk rezonans frekansı uygulanan geri besleme sinyallerinin oluşturduğu kütle etkisiyle %5,5 düşürülmüştür. Kullanılan ve üzerinde çalışılan deney düzeneklerinde istenilmeyen faz açılarının oluşması, analog alçak geçiren süzgeç devre tasarlanmasının fikrini oluşturmuştur. Lazer deplasman çıktısının hemen sonrasına yerleştirilen devre, hesaplandığı üzere ek bir faz açısı farkı sağlamıştır. Kuvvet algılayıcısı ölçüm sinyalinin, lazer ölçüm sinyalinin gerisinde olması durumunu, 90 derece gerisinde olması durumuna çevirmiş, deplasman ölçümleri ile aktif titreşim sönümleyici düzeneği tasarlanmasına olanak sağlamıştır. Bu yeni düzenek üzerinde gerçekleştirilen darbe çekici testleri frekans tepki fonksiyonlarının, kademeli olarak arttırılan geri besleme sinyalleri sonuçlarına göre, birinci moddaki titreşim genliklerini %44.37 düşürülmüştür. Sonuç olarak, bu tezde elektrodinamik bir sarsıcının eyleyici olarak kullanılması ile orantısal geri besleme kontrol düzenekleri kurulmuş ve bir tarafından tutturulmuş öteki tarafından serbest bırakılmış esnek bir kirişin birinci titreşim modu üzerindeki dinamik etkileri incelenmiştir. Ek bir devre kullanılarak ölçülen ve geri beslenen sinyaller arasındaki faz açılarına müdahale edilebilmiş, bu devrenin sağladığı faydalar incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmalarda uygulanan denetçi düzeneklerinin, yapı üzerinde ayrı ayrı ya da birlikte hem direngenlik, hem negatif direngenlik hem de sönüm etkisi oluşturabildiği gözlemlenmiştir., In the several last decades, a tremendous amount of interest has been generated among the academic and industrial studies dealing with active vibration control technology which offers an alternative approach when the passive vibration isolation techniques are not sufficient especially at lower frequencies. Not only the simple structures with relatively lower natural frequencies but also quite complicated structures and parts are good candidates for the application of active vibration control methods with the rapid development of this technology. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the active vibration control of a cantilever steel beam via performing both time domain and frequency domain analyses. Then, the performance of experimental setups as well as the close loop vibration response characteristics of the cantilever beam is studied. First of all, a literature survey which is about the active vibration control studies and advancements of methods is elaborately presented. Following this, in the second part, the background theory which is concerned with the physical principles and the theory of active vibration control are stated. Then, the dynamics of a single degree of freedom system is described in this section. Furthermore, fundamentals of active vibration control studies are explained in detail and it is shown theoretically that it is possible to modify systems by applying an additional control force proportional to displacement, velocity and acceleration or the combination of those individually so as to cause stiffness, damping and mass modification to the system as desired. In essence, the experiments for active vibration control performance are conducted via altering the actuation gains of feedback signals and the effects on modal parameters of the structure are investigated. Various active control test cases are investigated using the experimental test rig. Electrodynamic shaker is used as an actuator and laser measurement device is used as a sensor. The first case is for the examination of the controller designed for displacement feedback control in order to apply an additional controlled stiffness effect to the structure. The second case is basically active vibration suppression by adding an artificial damping to the system using velocity feedback signal. Similarly the third case is conducted with the aim of applying an additional negative stiffness or adding a controlled mass to the structure. Finally the use of an analogue phase shifter is introduced in some detail. It is utilized to enhance the controller systems by adjusting the phase angle between the measurement signal and feedback signal. Briefly, in this thesis, an electrodynamic shaker is utilized as an actuator to apply feedback signals on the cantilever beam structure. Stiffness, damping and mass effect of the controller systems on the structure are observed individually. The performances of feedback controllers are investigated for the first mode of the beam. Although the experimental results have been found to be quite promising, some aspects of these experiments need further development and research. An analogue phase shifter circuit is enhanced to feedback system so as to modify the phase angle between input and output signals. Öncelikle, karbon nanotüpler oluşturulan bir algoritma ile iki-boyutlu veya üç-boyutlu tasarım uzay rastgele olarak dağıtılmıştır. Bu dağılım yapılırken rastgelelik vardır fakat bu işlem sistematik bir şekilde ilerlemektedir. Ayrıca, algoritma nanotüplerin uzunluklarını, çaplarını, kesişen nanotüp sayısını, nanotüplerin birbirlerine göre uzaklıklarını ve açılarını kontrol etmektedir. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde, birbirleri ile kesişen nanotüplere ısı kaynağı yöntemi uygulanarak düzgün bağlama bölgeleri oluşturulmuştur. Bu bölgelerin sıcaklıkları kademe kademe artırılarak daha dengeli bir sistem elde edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Son bölümde ise, moleküler dinamik simülasyonları yardımı ile sisteme çekme testi uygulanmış ve malzemenin Young s modülü, akma dayanımı, kopma dayanımı, Poisson oranı ve yoğunluğu gibi özellikleri bulunmuştur. Son olarak karbon nanotüp yoğunluğunun mekanik özellikleri ne denli değiştireceğini gözlemlemek için iki ayrı ağ yapısı incelenmiştir., In this thesis,mechanical properties of random carbon nanotube networks are investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. First, a self-controlled algorithm is described to generate two-dimensional and three-dimensional networks consisting of numerous random intersected carbon nanotubes, which are distributed systematically in design space. The algorithm manipulates length and chirality of nanotubes, junction density and angular position of cross-linked carbon nanotubes in to obtain the best network. Afterwards, a molecular dynamics simulation is employed in order to create true junctions by heat welding method. Heating the system to a definite temperature enables the formation of covalent bonds between intersected CNTs. Finally, a tensile test simulation is also carried out to investigate mechanical properties such as the Young s modulus, ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, Poisson?s ratio or density of current network. Results are obtained and discussed. Optimum solutions are sought for the best mechanical properties by altering the simulation parameters including temperature interval, welding temperature, simulation time, timestep, displacement increment etc. Eventually, various simulations are conducted and results are compared. Özellikle otomotiv, havacılık ve askeri endüstrileri malzemelerin daha hafif ve dayanıklı olmasını istemektedir. Malzemelerin gerilme–birim şekil değiştirme eğrileri deneysel yöntemlerle elde edilir. Deneysel yöntemlerin pahalı olması sebebiyle son yıllarda bilgisayarların da gelişmesiyle birlikte malzeme testleri yerine bilgisayar ortamında modelleme tercih edilmektedir. Malzemelerin yüksek birim şekil değiştirme hızı ve sıcaklıklardaki davranışını modelleyebilmek için mukavemet modellerine ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Mukavemet modelleri birim şekil değiştirme miktarı, birim şekil değiştirme hızı ve sıcaklığa bağlı olarak gerilme değerinin hesaplanmasında kullanılmaktadır. Malzemenin elastik ve plastik bölgedeki davranışı malzemeye özgü çeşitli parametrelerle ifade edilir. Her malzeme için farklı olan bu değerler bilgisayar ortamına girilerek yapıların istenilen koşullar altında nasıl bir performans göstereceği belirlenebilir. Mukavemet modellerinden en popular olanı Johnson-Cook mukavemet modelidir. Bu model malzemenin akma mukavemeti ve pekleşme özelliklerini, yüksek şekil değiştime sırasındaki davranışını ve yüksek sıcaklıktaki davranışını ifade eden beş parametreden oluşmaktadır. Bu tez kapsamında, 1040, 1045 ve 4140 çelikleri olmak üzere üç adet malzemenin Johnson – Cook mukavemet model parametrelerinin belirlenmiştir. İlk olarak standart çekme testi malzemenin akma mukavemeti ve pekleşme üstelini belirlemek için gerçekleştirildi. Malzemenin yüksek sıcaklıkta ısıl yumuşama katsayısını bulabilmek için standart çekme testleri 80 C ve 260 C sıcaklıklarda gerçekleştirildi. Son olarak, malzemelerin yüksek birim şekil değiştirme hızlarında davranışını belirten katsayıyı bulabilmek için yüksek hızda çarpışma testleri SHPB kullanılarak gerçekleştirildi. Elde edilen sonuçlarda 1040 çeliği için literatürle uyumlu parametreler elde edilmiştir. 1045 ve 4140 çelikleri için elde edilen paramtreler ise bu çelikler için normalizasyon işlemi uygulanmadığından literatürle uyumlu değildir. Bu sonuç malzeme üzerindeki soğuk işlemin malzeme davranışı üzerinde önemli etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir., Determining of mechanical properties of materials is one of the oldest research area of engineering.There has been a significant demand for materials that are stronger, lighter and durable for various industries. Identification of mechanical properties requires experimental tests. Due to the cost of experiments, computer simulations are popular in engineering industry for identification of material behavior. For simulating material behavior, constitutive models which link the flow stress to incremental strain, strain rate and temperature are used. One of the most popular constitutive models is Johnson-Cook model. This model includes five material constants to describe stress as a function of strain, strain rate and temperature.In this thesis, five Johnson–Cook constitutive model parametersare determined for material characterization. For this purpose, three test types were performed for AISI 1040, AISI 1045 and AISI 4140 steels. Quasi-static tensile tests are performed for determining yield strength and strain hardening parameters of Johnson – Cook Model. Quasi–static temperature tests at 80 C and 260 C were performed to find thermal softening parameter. Finally, high strain rate tests were performed to characterize material behavior at different strain rates by using SHPB which is used to obtain stress-strain behavior of materials at impact loading conditions. The determined parameters for AISI 1040 were found to be well agreed with literature study. For AISI 1045 and AISI 4140 steels, the test results were not seen to be compatible with literature based on “normalized” material. Bu yüzden birçok mühendislik yapısının temel elemanları kirişlerden oluşmaktadır. Kiriş analizleri, insanlık tarihinin başlangıcından itibaren en önemli araştırma konularından biri haline gelmiştir. Kiriş için kısaca eğilmeye çalışan yapı elemanı denilebilir. Diğer bir ifadeyle kirişler; eksenlerine dik doğrultudaki yüklerin etkisi altında eğilmeye çalışırlar. Yani kiriş, üzerine gelen yükü taşıyarak mesnetlere naklederken eğilmeye zorlanır. Bu durumda kirişin orta kısmında, kiriş yüksekliğinin yarısından geçtiği kabul edilen tarafsız eksenin üst kısmı basmaya, alt kısmı ise çekmeye zorlanır. Kirişler düz veya eğri gibi farklı formlarda veya değişken kesitlerde olabilirler. Eğri eksenli kiriş olarak adlandırılan kompozit yapı elemanları, mühendislik alanında önemli bir yere sahiptir ve birçok endüstri alanında kullanılmaktadır. Günümüzde havacılık ve uzay sektöründe, transport tekniği elemanlarında, köprülerde ve birçok makine elemanlarında eğri eksenli kompozit kiriş özelliğine sahip yapılara ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bu yüzden pek çok araştırmacı bu yapılar üzerinde çalışmakta ve en doğru çözüm yöntemini aramaktadır. Çok çeşitli boyutlarda olabilen eğri eksenli kirişlerin bilhassa büyük gerilmelere, darbe yüklerine maruz olanlarının iyi etüt edilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu tez çalışması anlık basınç yükü etkisi altındaki katmanlı, kompozit, eğri eksenli bir kirişin dönel atalet etkilerini dikkate alarak lineer olmayan dinamik denklemlerinin türetilmesini ve farklı sınır koşullarında çözümünü içerir. Bu çalışmada virtüel iş prensibi kullanılarak eğri eksenli kompozit kirişlerin hareket denklemleri elde edilmiş ve farklı sınır şartları dikkate alınarak sonlu farklar metoduyla çözüm yapılmıştır. Ayrıca yapıya verilecek eğriliğin etkisini incelemek amacı ile aynı malzemeden yapılmış farklı eğrilik yarıçaplarına sahip kiriş yapılar için analizler tekrarlanmıştır. Böylece benzer yükleme durumları için bu yapıların dinamik cevapları karşılaştırılmıştır., Beams are the simplest and very frequently used construction members in engineering structures. So plenty of engineering constructions can be built up as beam elements. Beam analysis, from the beginning of human history, has become one of the most important research topics. Beam can shortly be defined as a bending structural member. In other words, beams bend under the effect of loads perpendicular to their axis. Namely, a beam is forced to bend while carrying a load on it and transferring that load to supports. In such a case, upper part of neutral axis assumed to pass through halfway of the beam height is forced to push down, and lower part is forced to pull down. The beams may be different forms, such as straight or curved or they may be variable cross-sections. Composite structural members named as curved beam have an important place in engineering and are used in a number of industries. Nowadays, structures having curved composite beam features are needed in aviation and space sector, elements of transport technique, bridges and various machinery elements. Therefore, many researchers study on these structures and seeking better solution methods. Curved beams, especially the ones exposed to high stresses and impact loads, which can be at various sizes, should be studied properly. This thesis contains derivation of nonlinear dynamic equations for a layered and composite curved beam under blast pressure load, and solutions for the equations at different boundary conditions. In this study, equations of motion for composite curved beams are obtained using virtual work principle and solved with finite differences method for different boundary conditions. Moreover, analyses were repeated for multiple beam structures made of the same material with different radii of curvature. Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2013, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2013, Gelişen teknoloji ile birlikte nanoteknoloji ve nano bilim kavramları ortaya çıkmış ve gerek akademik gerekse endüstriyel alanda araştırılan ve gelecek vaad eden konular ortaya çıkmıştır. Nanoteknoloji nanoboyutta maddenin incelenmesini temel alır. Nanoboyut metrenin milyarda biridir ve nanoteknoloji başta atomlar, moleküller ve 100 nm’nin altındaki büyüklükleri inceler. Günümüzde araştırmacılar nanoteknoloji konusuna büyük önem vermekte ve bu konuda fizik, kimya, malzeme bilimi, biyoloji gibi bilim dalları başta olmak üzere çok sayıda bilim dalından araştırmacı çalışmaktadır. Nanoteknolojinin bu kadar ilgi görmesinin sebebi ise nanoboyutta malzemelerin göstermiş olduğu farklı davranışlardır. Başta tıp, enerji, tekstil, elektronik, kimya, bilgisayar ve malzeme bilimi olmak üzere pek çok uygulama alanı bulan nanoteknoloji konusu her geçen gün gelişmekte ve yeni ürünler ortaya koymaktadır. Nanoboşluklu yapılar da dünyanın heryerinden araştırmacıların dikkatini çeken, başlıca nanomalzeme konularından biridir. Nanoboşluklu yapılar sahip olduğu benzersiz mekanik, fiziksel ve kimyasal özellikleriyle dünyanın her yerinden çok sayıda araştırmacının dikkatini çekmiş ve bu konuda yüzlerce çalışma yapılmıştır. Nano boşluklu malzemelerin, sahip oldukları yüksek hacim yüzey oranı, benzersiz yüzey yapıları ve özellikleri, boşluklu yapıları, boşluk dağılımları sayesinde eyleyici, sensör, katalizör, yalıtım malzemesi, enerji depolama, enerji soğurucu ve ayrıştırıcı olarak kullanılması planlanmaktadır. Ayrıca günümüzde başta tıp alanında olmak üzere pek çok alanda da kullanımına da başlanmıştır. Bu amaçla günümüzde pek çok alanda çok sayıda araştırmacı yeni nanoboşluklu malzeme üretimi, üretilen malzemelerin mekanik, fiziksel ve kimyasal özelliklerinin belirlenmesi için çalışmalar yapmaktadır. Başta nanoboşluklu altın olmak üzere, nanoboşlluk alüminyum, bakır, mangan en fazla incelenen nanoboşluklu malzemelerin başında gelir. Nanoboşluklu malzemeler, esas malzemenin özelliklerinde farklı özellikler göstermektedir. Bunun temel sebebi boşluktan kaynaklanan çok geniş bir yüzeyin sabit bir hacim içerinde bulunmasıdır. Yüzey büyüdükçe içerisindeki serbest yüzeyler ihmal edilemeyecek seviyeye gelir ve malzeme esas malzemenin özellikleri dışında özellikler göstermeye başlar. Nanoboşluklu malzemeler boşluk türlerine göre kapalı ve açık hücreli olarak olarak ikiye ayrılır. Kapalı hücreli nanoboşluklu malzemelerin daha çok yalıtım ve depolama amaçlı kullanıması planlanmakta açık hücrelilerin ise sensör, eyleyici, ayrıştırıcı ve katalizör olarak kullanımı amaçlanmaktadır. Nanoboşluklu malzemeler için yapılan çalışma sayısı fazla olmasına rağmen henüz genel geçerliliği olan sonuçlara ulaşılamamıştır. Örneğin, makro boşluklu nano malzemeler için Gibson ve Ashby denklemleri genel olarak geçerli olan bir eşitlik olduğu halde, nanoboşluklu malzemeler için böyle bir eşitlik henüz bulunamamıştır. Nanoboşluklu malzemelere, makroboşluklu malzemelerin mekanik özelliklerinin belirlenmesinde etkili olan parametrelerden farklı parametreler de etki ettiği için bu denklemlerin nanoboşluklu malzemelerde geçerliliğini yitirdiği gözlemlenmiştir. Gibson ve Ashby denklemleri göz önüne alındığında makroboşluklu malzemelerde bağıl yoğunluğun etkili olduğu gözlemlenmektedir. Ancak; nano boyuta düşüldükçe bağıl yoğunluk kadar bağ boyutu de önem kazanır ve bu durum Gibson ve Ashby denklemlerinin geçerliliğini yitirmesine sebep olur. Nanoboşluklu malzemeler üzerine yapılan çalışmalar deneysel ve teorik olarak olarak ikiye ayrılır. Deneysel çalışmalarda kullanılan nanoboşluklu malzemeler, yeniden alaşımla yöntemi başta olmak üzere, filtreleme ile dökme ve kalıplama yöntemleriyle üretilir. Mekanik özelliklerinin belirlenmesinde ise nano boyutta sertlik deneyi en yaygın kullanılan yöntemdir. Nano boyutta sertlik deneyinde elmas gibi sert bir metalden yapılan standart bir uç özellikleri bilinmeyen malzemeye bastırılır ve malzemenin buna gösterdiği direnç ölçülür. Diğer bir yöntem ise simülasyon yardımıyla mekanik özelliklerin incelenmesi yöntemidir. Literatürde çok sayıda moleküler dinamik simülasyonu yardımıyla nanoboşluklu malzemelerin mekanik özelliklerin belirlenmesi konulu çalışma mevcuttur. Bunun nedeni deneysel yöntemlere göre daha kolay, hızlı ve pratik olmasıdır. Bu tez kapsamında, nanoboşluklu alüminyum malzemelerin ve içerisine bakır kaplama yapılmış nanoboşluklu alüminyum malzemenin değişik boşluk oranlarında elastiklik modulü, akma dayanımı, kopma dayanımı, yoğunluğu gibi mekanik özellikleri incelenmiş ve bulunan sonuçlar ile piyasada kullanılan alüminyum malzemelerin özellikleri arasında karşılaştırmalar yapılmıştır. Bu amaçla, öncelikle nanoboşluklu yapının bilgisayar ortamında oluşturulması amaçlanmış ve çeşitli yazılım programları yardımıyla modeller oluşturulmuştur. Model oluşumunda önce MATLAB yazılımı kullanılarak rastgele koordinatlar oluşturulmuş ve bu koordinatlardan çeşitli yarıçaplarda, belirli kurallar çerçevesinde birbiri ile kesişen küreler yaratılmıştır. Bu küreler CATIA da oluşturulan, belirli hacimdeki bir prizmatik şekilden çıkarılarak esas alacağımız boşluklu yapı modelimiz elde edilmiştir. Sonrasında tekrar MATLAB yardımı ile içerisine istenilen kalınlıkta Al veya Cu atomları kaplanarak değişik boşluk yüzdelerinde nanoboşluklu yapılar elde edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak üç farklı boşluk oranı esas alınarak toplamda altı adet model oluşturulmuştur. Bu modellerin üç tanesi kaplama yapılmamış nanoboşluklu alüminyum, üç tanesi ise iç yüzeyine bakır kaplama yapılmış nanoboşluklu alüminyum modellerdir. Her bir boşluk oranı için hem tek atomlu hem de kaplamalı bir kenar uzunluğu 380 A0 olan küp şeklinde modeller oluşturulmuştur. Bu boşluk oranları %68.6, %64.6 ve %59.8 dir. %68.6 boşluk oranında 2 nm, %64.6 boşluk oranında 3 nm, %59.8 boşluk oranında ise 4 nm kalınlığında bakır kaplama tabakası bulunmaktadır. Oluşturulan modeller, moleküler dinamik yöntemleri ile incelenmiş ve elastiklik modülü, akma dayanımı, kopma dayanımı, yoğunluk gibi mekanik özelliklerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla moleküler dinamik simülasyonları yapılmıştır. Moleküler dinamik simülasyonlarında Sandia Ulusal Laboratuarında geliştirilmiş olan ve günümüzde en yaygın kullanılan moleküler dinamik simülasyon programlarından biri olan LAMMPS programı kullanılmıştır. Bu programa istenilen atomların özellikleri, sınır koşulları, kafes yapıları, potansiyel tipleri, başlangıç durum ve hızları, sıcaklıklar gibi parametreleri uygun kodlar yazılarak belirlenmiştir. İstenilen şartlar altında ve belirli bir miktarda uzama uygulanarak çekme davranışı incelenmiştir. Atomların birbirleriyle etkileşimlerinde Al-Cu alaşımları için yazılmış olan gömülü atom modeli kullanılmış ve etkileşimler incelenmiştir. Değişik boşluk oranlarında, hem tek çeşit atomlu hem de kaplamalı modeller için simülasyonlar yapılmış ve çıkan sonuçlar hem literatürdeki verilerle hem de birbirleriyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Öncelikle kaplamasız nanoboşluklu modeller incelenmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda elastiklik modülü %68.6 boşluk oranı için yaklaşık 125 GPa, %64.6 boşluk oranı için yaklaşık 150 GPa ve %59.8 boşluk oranı için yaklaşık yaklaşık 250 GPa olarak bulunmuştur. Bu sonuçlar bilinen alüminyum değeri olan 69 GPa değerinde oldukça yüksektir. Tez kapsamında, makroboşluklu malzemelerde kullanılan deklemler yardımıyla elastiklik modülü hesaplanmış ve eşitlikten elde edilen sonuçlar ile analizlerden elde edilen sonuçlar arasında büyük farklılılar olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Kaplamasız nanoboşluklu alüminyum modellerin akma dayanımları da incelenmiş ve %68.6 boşluk oranı için 270 MPa, %64.6 boşluk oranı için 300 MPa ve %59.8 boşluk oranı için 460 MPa bulunmuştur. Bu değerler Gibson ve Ashby denkleminden elde edilen değerlerden ve alüminyum akma değerinden oldukça büyüktür. Aynı zamanda kopma mukavemeti incelenmiş ve %68.6 boşluk oranı için 304 MPa, %64.6 boşluk oranı için 351 MPa ve %59.8 boşluk oranı için 594 MPa bulunmuştur. Son olarak yoğunluk hesabı yapılmıştır. Bunun için bir kenar uzunluğu 380 A0 olan kübik şekilde bir model LAMMPS yardımıyla oluşturulmuş ve içi boşluksuz olacak şekilde alüminyum atomları ile doldurulmuştur. Oluşturulan atom sayısı hesaplanmış ve bu bilgi yardımıyla alüminyumun yoğunluğu hesaplanmıştır. Her bir model için yoğunluklar hesaplanmış ve bu yoğunluk değerleri boşluksuz için hesaplanan değere bölünerek nanoboşluklu malzemeler için önemli parametrelerden biri olan yoğunluk oranı değerleri elde edilmiştir. İkinci aşamada boşluk oranı aynı olan kaplamalı modeller incelenmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda elde edilen verileri kullanarak kaplamasız modellerde uygulanan yöntemlerle elastiklik modülü, akma dayanımı ve kopma mukavemeti hesaplanmıştır. Bakır kaplamalı nanoboşluklu alüminyum malzemede elastiklik modülü %68.6 boşluk oranı için yaklaşık 300 GPa, %64.6 boşluk oranı için yaklaşık 343 GPa ve %59.8 boşluk oranı için yaklaşık yaklaşık 437 GPa olarak bulunmuştur. Bakır kaplamalı nanoboşluklu malzemelerin akma dayanımları da hesaplanmış ve %68.6 boşluk oranı için 370 MPa, %64.6 boşluk oranı için 490 MPa ve %59.8 boşluk oranı için 680 MPa olarak bulunmuştur. Bunlara ek olarak, bu malzemelerin kopma mukavemetleri elde edilen en büyük kuvvet yardımıyla hesaplanmıştır bu değerler %68.6 boşluk oranı için 377 MPa, %64.6 boşluk oranı için 498 MPa ve %59.8 boşluk oranı için 752 MPa olarak hesaplanmıştır. Yapılan analizlerde porozite arttıkça elastisitenin, akma dayanımının, kopma dayanımının azaldığı gözlenmiştir. Yoğunluğun ise artan porozite oranı ile azaldığı görülmüştür. Bunun yanında kaplama yapılmasının malzemenin elastiklik modülünde, akma dayanımında ve kopma mukavemeti değerlerinde artışa neden olduğu gözlemlenmiştir., Nanotechnology and nanoscience have become a significant part of academic research studies since the development of electron microscopes. Nanoporous materials, one of the fundamental branches of nanomaterials, attracted researchers’ attention all over the world due to their unique mechanical, physical and chemical properties. They can be used as actuators, sensors, catalysis, insulators, electrodes, energy absorbents and separators as a result of their high surface to volume ratio and their original surface, structural, bulk and excellent electro-catalytic characteristics. Alternative pore proportion, porosity, pore configuration and combination of altered pores and surface characteristics provide numerous appliances. This widely usage area encourages physicists, biologists, chemists and engineers to discover new porous materials, new production methods and new simulation techniques to define the characteristics of porous materials. In this thesis, mechanical behavior of nanoporous Al and Cu coated nanoporous Al with different thickness values are investigated by using molecular dynamic simulation. A nanoporous model is generated by using CATIA and MATLAB software. Coordinates of the spheres center points are generated randomly and radii values are given. Furthermore, the nanoporous structure is generated by deleting random spherical structure from a solid block with a CATIA command script. For the coated model, a new material is generated inside the porous structure using a proper algorithm and a thickness is assigned. Subsequently, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to determine the mechanical behavior of coated and uncoated nanoporous structures. One of the most common MD software, LAMMPS (Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator) is used to determine mechanical behavior of the nanoporous structure. Design parameters and initial conditions of MD simulations such as the dimension, units, atom and lattice types, potential type, atomic mass, initial positions and velocities, temperatures and constraints are applied to the model with LAMMPS. As an interatomic potential, Al-Cu embedded atom potential (EAM), is employed to model to define the interactions between Al and Cu atoms. Simulations are done for different relative densities and completed by using these parameters. Comparisons are made with the results given in literature., Yüksek Lisans, M.Sc.

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2013, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2013, Günümüzde artan nüfus ve sanayileşme sebebiyle ortaya çıkan tüketim artışları, üretim işlemlerinin hızlandırılmasını ve süreçlerin kısaltılmasını gerekli kılmaktadır. Ancak bu hızlı gelişmeler henüz tecrübe edilmemiş bazı problemleri de yanlarında getirmektedir. Bununla beraber, özellikle enerji, kimya, ilaç ve petrokimya gibi sektörler hassas ve yüksek güvenirlikli üretim süreçleri içerdiği için üretimde kullanılan ekipmanların hem bu hassas üretim şartlarını hem de tasarım ömür şartlarını yerine getirmesi gereklidir. Santrifüj pompalar belirtilen sektörlerdeki birçok üretim sürecinin ya ana ekipmanı ya da ana ekipmana destek ikincil kritik ekipman olarak görev yapmaktadır. Santrifüj pompa içerisinde akış genel olarak üç boyutlu, türbülanslı, sınır tabaka ayrılmaları, giriş/çıkış sirkülasyonları ve kavitasyon gibi sebeplerle çalkantılı bir görüntü sergilemektedir. Pompanın tasarımı birçok parametreye bağlı olup, çark ve gövde geometrisi karmaşık bir yapı içermektedir. Bu durum, daimi olmayan çalkantılı akışın hangi etkileşimler sonucunda oluştuğunun belirlenmesini zorlaştırmaktadır. Tecrübe ve benzeşim yaklaşımı ile hidrolik verim açısından iyi tasarlanmış bir pompanın, basınç çalkantıları, yatak ömürleri, titreşim ve gürültü seviyesi gibi diğer kriterler açısından da durumunu belirlemek genel anlamda pompa üretildikten sonra yapılan deneylerde ortaya çıkarılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, tasarımda gerekli görülen iyileştirmeler ve düzeltmeler ancak iteratif prototip üretimleri, deney tekrarları ve yüksek maliyetlerle gerçekleştirilmektedir. Özellikle son yıllarda bilgisayar teknolojisinde ortaya çıkan gelişmeler, pompa tasarımında yapısal ve akış analizlerinin sayısal olarak yapılarak görselleştirilmesine olanak sağlamış, tasarımın iyileştirilmesinin ve optimizasyonunun bilgisayar üzerinde yapılarak model, kalıp ve deney maliyetlerinin indirgenmesine ve zaman kayıplarının azaltılmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Yapılan bu çalışmada bir pompanın üç farklı açıdan (Modal, Akış ve Yapısal) sayısal analizleri ANSYS Workbench ticari yazılımı altında yapılmıştır. Yapılan modal analizlerde pompanın üç farklı mesnetleme durumuna karşılık gelen doğal frekanları belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen doğal frekansların pompanın dönme frekansı ve kanat geçiş frekansları ile karşılaştırılması yapılmış, kritik olabilecek mod şekilleri incelenmiştir. Akış analizleri Fluent ortamında URANS(Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) algoritması kullanılarak çözümlenmiştir. Buradaki akış, çark gövde içerisinde tam bir tur atarken incelenmiş, özellikle dil bölgesi ve çıkış basıncındaki çalkatılar irdelenmiştir. Yapı-Akışkan etkileşimi açısından yapısal analizler akış analizleri ile eş zamanlı yapılarak, akış çözümleri ile elde edilen basınç dağılımları gövde üzerine uygulanmış ve gerilme-şekil değiştirme durumları incelenmiştir., Increasing amounts of consumption, due to the explosion of population and industrialization, necessitated the production processes to be faster and with shorter lead times. However this rapid progress brings some design problems for which solutions based on experience does not exist. Since accurate and highly reliable production processes are mandatory for energy, chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries; the tools used during production in these industries must assure both accurate production conditions and design life criterions. Centrifugal pumps are being used as the main equipment or the second critical equipment at the stated industries above. Pumps are recorded to be the second most common machinery on earth after electric motors. Recently centrifugal pumps are being designed and produced in various sizes and constructional features. For instance, miniature sized Blood Pumps, giant axial flow pumps with impeller diameters exceeding 4 meters for Flood Control and boiler feed pumps in Power Plants of motor power above 65.000HP. This wide range of application brings challenging problems to cope with on different levels of criticality. It is obvious that the problem arising in the design phase has no direct link to the size of the pump but closely related to application itself. As a result, specific requirements based on application specific standards and additional end-user measures are quite common and define every single step through design, production, quality control, testing, site installation and even shipment of the pump. Pumps are composed of two main components in terms of hydraulic design: Casing and Impeller. Fluid accelerates inside the impeller and steps up kinetic energy and then diffuses to casing. The energy transfer mechanism inside casing and impeller is quite complex. The flow in the centrifugal pump is generally characterized as three dimensional (3D), turbulent and also fluctuating when the flow is dominated by boundary layer separations, inlet/outlet circulations and cavitation. The design of the pump depends on many parameters and the pump geometry consists of very complex structures. These aspects make it difficult to define under which interactive process the unsteady fluctuating flow develops. Vibration, being one of the challenging problems of today, is one of the most important parameters pump designer shall consider. The excitation mechanisms in rotating machinery, especially fluid bearing equipments, may be very complex. Flow separation, cavitation, unsteady flow, recirculation and pressure pulsations are some of the reason for that. But these are not considered as main excitations for vibration, the coupling phenomenon between fluid and structure is defined as the major source. The influence of pressure pulsations on vibration can be characterized by the following; wake flow at impeller outlet part load recirculation distance between impeller vanes and diffuser vanes or volute tongue geometry of impeller trailing edge combination of number of impeller and diffuser vanes fluid properties and gas content inlet conditions resonance and piping excitations Taking into consideration above influencing parameters, the forced vibration of pump is very complex. It is not easy to design a pump just by experience with fair knowledge of fluid-structure interaction. Extended analysis and prototype tests are needed to be conducted in most cases. The evaluation of a hydraulically efficient pump; that is designed by the designers’ experience and similarity laws; with pressure pulsation, bearing life, vibration and noise level criterions are generally inspected with experiments after the pump is manufactured. In this context, necessary modifications and improvements in the design are only possible to be accomplished by checking the experimental results, thus with high costs. Recent developments in computer science led to reduction in pattern/mould production, casting and experimental costs since the flow and structural behavior of the pump can now be numerically simulated and design improvements and optimization process are made using computers. Numerical methods have wide-spread applications on different subjects. FEM (Finite Element Method) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) methods became indispensible part of design processes and have given a chance for designers to make “Virtual Experiments” before production. In these methods, the computational domain discretized to small computational grids or elements where governing formulations are kept valid for each computational node. FEM is generally used for static and dynamic structural analysis and the calculated results corresponds to nodal points at the element. CFD has different algorithms on discretization, FD (Finite Differences) or FV (Finite Volume) on defining nodal or elemental properties. FEM can also be used in CFD analysis but it is more easy and common to use other methods. Some commercial sofwares use both techniques depending on problem type or users’ choice. Some bottlenecks arise using computational methods and affect the validity of results; accuracy and numerical error high resolution mesh small time steps (transient analysis) hardware requirements software and license requirements post processing huge sized result data To overcome stability and accuracy problems on solutions, optimization of mesh size and measures of quality shall be proposed in the beginning of the analysis. It is also important to consider the computational cost (time and hardware), when defining the optimum computational grid. In terms of accuracy, mesh independence to be analyzed and convergence criteria are to be stated. In many analyses, it takes more time to generate an optimum computational grid than the time on solution phase. Furthermore in some cases, accuracy may have a second level importance where immediate estimate results are needed with an expected level error. Weather forecast can be a good example for this. In this study numerical analysis of a pump is performed with the commercial software ANSYS Workbench considering modal, fluid dynamics and structural aspects. In modal analysis, natural frequencies of the pump are calculated under three different supporting conditions. The calculated frequencies are compared with shaft rotation and blade passing frequency, and critical mode shapes are analyzed. Flow simulations are performed with Fluent using URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) algorithm. Flow is analyzed for the impeller making one complete rotation in the casing, and special attention is paid to the volute tongue region and outlet pressure pulsations. Structural analysis is simultaneously conducted with flow analysis. Pressure fields, calculated with CFD, are imposed to volute casing and stress-strain-deformation levels are analyzed. Validations of simulations are done by the tests conducted. The pump is tested under specified operating conditions and off-design conditions in order to calibrate CFD model, and the results are found consistent with the simulations. The vibrations at the bearings are measured on both driven and non-driven side, and levels are checked to corresponding standards. To investigate the influence of piping and installation, the tests are conducted with two different flow control configuration. Yaşam boyunca devam eden bir süreç olan iç yapının adaptasyonu; kişinin bünyesel özelliklerine ve maruz kaldığı mekanik yüklere bağlıdır. Bu parametrelerden kemik adaptasyonunu en çok etkileyeni Wolff Yasaları olarakta bilinen kemiğin maruz kaldığı mekanik yüklere karşı gösterdiği davranıştır ve yalnızca bu davranışı içeren bir adaptasyon algoritmasının oluşturulması karşılaşılan çoğu durumu açıklamak için yeterli olmaktadır. Bu çalışmada adaptasyon sürecini simüle edebilmek için adaptif elastisite teorisi esaslarından yararlanışmıştır. Teoriye göre yüklemelerde veya sistemde anormal bir değişiklik olduğunda kemik uyarılacak ve yeniden denge durumuna gelebilmek için kendi iç yapısını yani trabeküler kemiğin dağılımını değiştirecektir. Bu teori esas alınarak geliştirilen adaptasyon algoritması sonlu elemanlar programına uygun şekilde monte edilmiştir. Bu algoritmanın şu ana kadar incelenenlere göre en büyük avantajı yükleme gibi saniyeler bazında gerçekleşen bir olay ile adaptasyon gibi günler bazında gerçekleşen bir sürecin iki ayrı fazda ele alınmasını sağlayan yapısıdır. Validasyon için femur kemiğinin yürüme sırasında, diş implantının çevresindeki çene kemiğinin ise çiğneme etkisinde yoğunluk dağılımının zaman içindeki değişimine bakılmış, literatür ile uyuşan sonuçlar gözlemlenmiştir. Gerekli validasyonlardan sonra, L3 segmentini içeren lumbar modeli hazırlanmış ve segmente uygulanmış vida çevresinde bulunan kortikal ve trabeküler yapıdaki kemiklerde günlük yüklemeler sırasında oluşabilecek yapım ve yıkım süreci incelenmiştir. Klinikle örtüşen sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır., Beside the well known functions, bones are capable of growing, repairing itself in a case of fracture and changing its internal structure and external shape constantly to adapt the environment. The lifelong remodeling process modified by a lot of parameter such as; sex, age, race, hormonal, physilogical conditions and mechanical activities. The most influental one is the response of bone to mechanical loading conditions which is also known as Wolff s Law and developing an algorithm based on mechanical activities is sufficient enough for most of the cases. In this study, a model that based on adaptive elasticity theory is proposed which claims that when a change of load or abnormal state occurs, bone is stimulated to adapt its mass to regain the equilibrium state. So driving force of remodeling is the difference between homeostatic state and actual state. The developed remodeling algorithm is implemented to a finite element software program properly. The most important advantage of the algorithm is its structure which decouples the loading cycles (short term events which occur in order of seconds) and the remodeling process (long term events which occur in order of days). Algorithm has been validated against density distribution of proximal femur during gait cycle and density distribution of implant induced mandibula during mastication. Good agreement has been observed with the results available in the literature. Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2012, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2012, Otomotiv endüstrisi son yıllarda, yasal düzenlemeler ve çevresel kaygıların etkisiyle egzoz emisyonlarını azaltırken; müşteri beklentileri doğrultusunda da daha yüksek performansta ekonomik motor üretmek gibi zor ve çok boyutlu bir problemle karşı karşıyadır. Temel hedef, daha az yakıt tüketen, yüksek performanslı ve düşük egzoz emisyon değerlerine sahip yeni nesil çevreci motor üretimidir. Düşük maliyet, hafiflik ve sessiz çalışma ise diğer ön plana çıkan beklentilerdir. İç basıncın arttırılması ve dizayn değişiklikleri ile tüm bu beklentilerin büyük çoğunluğuna çözüm bulunmuştur. Ancak dizayn değişiklikleri, artan iç basınç ve çalışma sıcaklığı motorlarda start-stop çevrimi esnasında meydana gelen düşük çevrimli termomekanik yorulmayı çok daha fazla dikkat edilmesi gereken bir sorun haline getirmiştir. Halihazırda silindir kafası ve bloğu için kullanılan gri dökme demir genel beklentileri sağlamakta yetersiz kalmakta yeni malzemelerin kullanımı/geliştirilmesi gerekmektedir. Malzeme problemi, vermiküler dökme demir (CGI, ör. GJV450) ve alüminyum alaşımlarının (ör. Al319-T7B) motor blokları ve silindir kafalarında kullanılmasıyla çözülmeye başlamıştır. Alüminyum alaşımları gri dökme demire oranla çok daha düşük bir yoğunluğa sahipken vermiküler dökme demir daha iyi mekanik özellikleri sayesinde daha az miktarda (ince kesitte) kullanılarak aynı hatta daha iyi performans sağlamaktadır. Gerçekleştirilen bu çalışmada silindir kafasının ömür hesabının yapılması için mekanik ve termal etkiler gerçekçi bir şekilde modellenmiştir. Bilgisayar destekli mühendislik teknolojileri kullanılarak başta silindir kafası ve motor bloğu parçalarının mekanik ve termal yükler altındaki davranışı göz önüne alınarak numerik modeller ve geliştirmeler kullanılmıştır. Bu bilgisayar destekli mühendislij metodolojisi, 1-boyutlu ve 3-boyutlu analitik araçlar kullanılarak motor içi akışkanın modellenmesini ve motor parçalarının yapısal olarak modollenmesini içeriyor. Motor geliştirme projeleri genelde sıfırdan bir geliştirme projesinden ziyade, projelerin devamında yapılan dizayn ve doğrulama prosesi önce yapılmış hesaplara ve varsayımlara dayanır. Hesaplamalar, gerçekleşecek değişiklikleri içerirler. Bu yüzdendir ki, dizayn gereksinimleri uygulamadan uygulamaya ve kalibrasyon tipine göre değişkenlik gösterebilir. Yapılan en küçük bir değişiklik dahi, silindir kafasındaki sıcaklık ve gerinim dağılımını önemli ölçüde değiştirerek, motor ömrünü kabul sınırlarının altında kalmasına neden olabilir. Bu nedenle motor üzerinde gerçekleştirilen çalışmalarda silindir kafası en önemli madde olarak sürekli kontrol altında tutulmaktadır. Motorun her ısınıp soğuması bir ısıl çevrime karşılık gelir. Bir motorun bu yükler altında dayanımı motordan motora, sürücüden sürücüye değişkenlik arzeder. Yine de her motor belli sayıdaki ısıl çevrime direnç gösterecek şekilde tasarlanır. Silindir kafasının ısıl yorulması mekanik gerinim, sürünme ve oksidasyon gibi bir çok farklı mekanizmanın aynı anda çalışması ile gerçekleşen kompleks bir fenomendir Termomekanik yorulma hesabının gerçekleştirilmesi için bir çok disiplinin birlikte çalışması gerekmektedir. Tezin yazımında kurulan kurguda bu disiplinlere sırayla yer verilmektedir. Tezin metodolojisinde, basamak basamak hangi komponent ve sistemlerin ne şekilde modelleneceği anlatıldı. Kurulan analiz modelleri, kullanılan malzeme ve bu malzemenin matematiksel modellenmesine sırayla yer verildi. Silindir kafa malzemesi olarak kullanılan CGI malzemenin davranışının incelenmesi için Chaboche teorisi kullanılmıştır. Chaboche teorisi gerilme/gerinim bazlı olup, artımlı plastisite teorisine dayanan son derece kapsamlı bir modeldir. Analizlerimiz esnasında chaboche malzeme teorisini kullanan bir alt program kullanılmıştır. Bu alt program silindir kafası için ömür hesabını gerçekleştirmektedir. Diğer bir önemli nokta da malzeme testleridir. Thomat alt programı kullanılacak malzeme için yapılmış bir ön değer seti ile kullanılmaktadır. Buna karşın, belli bir silindir kafası için elde edilmiş ve başarılı sonuçlar vermiş TMF parametreleri, aynı malzemeden yapılmış farklı bir mimariye sahip başka bir silindir kafası için aynı derecede başarılı sonuçlar vermeyebilir. Dökümhane farklılığı da bu varyasyona olumsuz yönde etki edecek önemli bir unsurdur. Bir kez imalatçı seçilip prototip kafalar üretildikten sonra, bu kafalardan çekilecek numunelerle ek testler yapılacak ve tüm parametreler korale edilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu hem döküm kalitesini değerlendirme hem de başarılı ömür tahmini yapabilme imkanı veremektedir. Bir diğer konu ise sıcaklığın modelimize eklenmesidir. Sıcaklık, malzeme karakterizasyonuna ve motorun ömrüne etki eden en önemli parametredir. Bu yüzden motorun çalışma koşullarındaki sıcaklık dağılımının en doğru şekilde hesaplanması ve bu hesapların test sonuçları ile korele edilmesi analizlerin doğruluğu bakımından önemlidir. Sıcaklıkların doğru hesaplanabilmesi için motor sıcaklığına doğrudan etki eden soğutma suyunun etkisinin doğru şekilde modellenmesi gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada konjuge kafa/blok analizleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu tip ayrık analiz metodu özellikle konsept fazı gibi akışkan yüzeylerinde çok fazla iterasyon gerektiren tasarım çalışmaları için özellikle uygundur. Bu nedenle konsept motor geliştiren şirketlerin tercihi olmuştur. Motor bloğu ve silindir kafasını modellerken, gerçekleştirilmesi gereken diğer bir iş de soğutma ceketlerinin hesaplamalı akışkanlar dinamiği (Computational Fluid Dynamics - CFD) metodları ile modellenmesidir. Dizel motorlarında silindir içindeki ortalama gaz sıcaklıkları 1000 C° dereceyi aşan sıcaklıklara ulaşmakta ve bu değer daha verimli motor arayışıyla her geçen gün artmaktadır. CFD metodları soğutma sıvısı ve metal yüzeyler arasındaki konveksiyon katsayısı dağılımını ve kanal içerisinde soğutma sıvısı sıcaklık dağılımını hesaplamakta kullanılır. Bu veriler termal analizde sınır değerleri olarak kullanılır ve blok ve silindir kafasındaki sıcaklık dağılımını belirler. Silindir kafası ve motor bloğu analizlerinde diğer bir önemli ilerleme silindir için yanma modellerinin sonuçlarının doğrudan yanma yüzeylerine beslenmesidir. Mevcut metod 1D termodinamik analiz sonuçlarının kafa ve blok yüzeylerine elle girilmesi ile gerçekleştirilir. Kafa enjektör çevresinde bir kaç bölgeye bölünür ve buraya termodinamik analiz sonucu ısıl katsayılar ve gaz sıcaklıkları uygulanır. Bu nedenden dolayı enjektör sprey açısı ve konumu gibi etkileri görmek mümkün değildir. Örnek olarak bir spreyin altında kalan bölgenin normalden daha sıcak olması beklenirken mevcut analzi metodunda bunlar görülmemektedir. Modellenen yanmanın doğrudan silindir alt yüzeyine tanımlanması (mapping) buna imkan verecektir. Sonlu elemanlar yöntemi ile beraber altmodelleme (submodel) yöntemi de çalışmalarımız esnasında geliştirildi. Kurulan modellerin milyonun katları kadar eleman içermesinden dolayı analiz sürelerini çok uzun olması beklenmektedir. (100-120 saat civarında) Çalışmak istediğimiz bölgeleri motor üzerinde belirleyerek kuracağımız altmodeller çok daha kısa sürede istediğimiz sonuçları almamızı sağlamıştır. Bu modelleme yeteneği ile beraber daha verimli çalışma süreleri elde edilerek, kullanılan yazılımların lisans masrafları önemli derece de azaltılmıştır. Bu tez çalışmasının sonucunda, geliştirilen veya tasarlanan bir konsept motor için kritik olan silindir kafasının termomekanik olarak yorulma ömrü hesaplandı. Bu şekilde çok maliyetli olan prototip ürün ve motor testlerine gerek kalmadan bu tez metodolojisiyle yorulma ömrünün tespit edilmesi gerçekleştirilmiştir., In recent years, automotive industry faces a difficult and versatile problem such as producing more economical engines with higher performance according to customer expectations while reducing exhaust emissions due to legal regulations and environmental concerns. The main objective is to manufacture silent, cheaper and lighter new generation green engines with low exhaust emissions which also show higher performance and consume less fuel. All these expectations have solved partially by increasing the peak firing pressure and modifying the design. However, thermal fatigue occurring during the start-stop cycle has become an important issue that should be taken into consideration more carefully with these modifications, increasing internal pressure and working temperature inside engines. Currently used gray cast iron as cylinder head and block material is insufficient to provide general expectations so new materials should be used or developed. Material problems began to unravel with the use of vermicular cast iron (CGI, GJV450) and aluminum alloys (ex. Al319-T7B) for engine blocks and cylinder heads. The density of aluminum alloys is much lower than grey cast iron and using a smaller amount of vermicular cast iron provides same or even better performance in low thickness with its better mechanical properties. In addition to material upgrade of the material, it is important to prove out their performance and life spending less time and cost. The 60%-70% cost of “Development of engine and transmission components” is due to the validation tests. Projects which created with the help of traditional product development mentality, analytical calculations and previous experiences requires a large number of tests, are the reason for the high cost. The percentage of computer-aided analysis in the product development budget is seriously low (expressed in terms of a few percent) because of carrying on old methods in some areas and lack of usage. It is possible to achieve great profit in the design with correct approaches and applications if the progress in the methods and their fewer prices when compared to tests is considered. In recent years, design studies on this subject are carried out significantly. Computer-aided analysis of gray cast iron parts indicated successful results, however results for the vermicular cast iron which is newly used in automotive industry are not reliable at the same rate. The main reason for this difference is the assumption of material constants same for all parts for the classical approach, whereas vermicular cast iron has heterogeneous microstructure (nodularity) which formed due to varying cooling rate with the cross section. Companies develop their own experimental data for the identification of cross-sectional properties and sharing information is almost never made. Thermal and mechanical loadings become more obvious due to non-homogenous microstructure of cylinder head which consist of a combination of thin and thick sections of complex geometrical parts. Engine blocks and/or cylinder heads are subjected to verification/performance tests in the dynamometer after the design stage. Despite being expensive, dynamometer tests are the basic test approach for all engine manufacturers. The necessity of collecting the prototype engine and long test periods with standard fuels like thousands of hours are the reason for expensive tests. In general, a test lasts for months and thousands of liters of fuel consumed during that time. Design results can be obtained too slowly because of this long period of experiments, sometimes effect of a small change can be observed for months. In this study, the aim is the simulating thermal-mechanical fatigues which is going to be used for modeling of cylinder head, one of the most complex parts of new generation engines. In this way, any type of cylinder head produced from different materials may be analysed faster and more economically without the need to collect engine. In addition to cost advantages, pollution created by combustion of thousands liters of fuels will be reduced by using gaseous fuels such as natural gas because diesel/gasoline is not used as fuel, thus an environmentally friendly test method will be developed for green engines., Yüksek Lisans, M.Sc.

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2012, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2012, Raylı taşıt dinamiği demiryolu mühendisliğinin temel konularından biridir. Farklı fiziksel koşullar altında aracın davranışı yapılan dinamik analizler sonucu belirlenir. Aracın dinamiğini etkileyen temel parametreler taşıtın boyutları, kütle ve atalet değerleridir. Ayrıca süspansiyon elemanlarının yay ve sönüm katsayıları ve bu elemanların bağlantı noktalarının konumları da taşıt dinamiğini etkilmektedit. Taşıtın davranışını belirleyen bir diğer önemli parametre ise tekerlek ve ray profilidir. Tekerlek profilinin yuvarlanma düzlemi aracın düz yoldaki davranışını, flanş bölgesi ise kurptaki davranışını belirlemektedir. Metro ve hafif metro sistemlerinde tekerlek profili standartlar tarafından belirlenirken tramvay hatlarında ise işletmeci tarafından hat karakteristikleri ve işletme hızı gibi parametreler göz önünde bulundurularak belirlenmektedir. Tekerlek profili tasarımında dikkat edilmesi gereken ana husus konfor-güvenlik ilişkisinin doğru bir şekilde kurulmasıdır. Bu tez kapsamında raylı taşıt dinamiğinde önemli bir etkiye sahip olan tekerlek-ray teması üzerinde durulmuştur. Öncelikle Simpack yazılımında bir tramvay aracına ait 52 serbestlik dereceli dinamik model oluşturulmuştur. Daha sonra üç farklı tekerlek profili (TTP1, TTP2 ve TTP3) modele eklenerek performansları incelenmiş ve karşılaştırılmıştır. Yapılan kararlılık, konfor ve kurp analizleri sonucunda TTP2 ve TTP3 profilleri konfor, yanal kararlılık açısından daha iyi sonuçlar verdiği gözlemlenmiştir. Kurp analizinde ise her üç profilinde güvenlik sınırlarını aşmamakla birlikte TTP1 profilinin deray oranı daha düşük çıkmıştır. Yapılan bu tez ile modellenen tramvay aracının dinamik sürüş performansı bakımından en uygun tekerlek profili belirlenmiştir. Önerilen tekerlek profili ile konfor iyileştirilirken güvenlik standartlar tarafından belirlenen sınırlar içerisinde tutulmuştur., Metro and trams are one of the most cost effective vehicles in urban transportation. This is due to the low energy loss of metal on metal contact between wheels and rail. The advantageous characteristics in passenger carrying capacity and punctual operation make them more preferable than other urban transportation vehicles. They also offer a secure and comfortable trip for passengers. Metro and trams differ from other railway vehicles in operating conditions. Some main differences are the distance between stations, passenger capacity, braking and acceleration. Especially tram vehicles’ design inputs vary considerably since they are operated within the motorway traffic and with respect to city’s weather condition and geological specification. The selection of railway wheel and rail profiles is a challenge that has faced engineers since the dawn of the railway age. This thesis is mainly focused on rail-wheel profile contact which has a very important effect on railway vehicle dynamics. Metro and light rail vehicle wheel profiles are determined with respect to the predefined standards. However in tramways, it is determined by the operator considering the parameters such as line characteristics and operating speeds. Increasing axle loads, the presence of tight curves and light vehicles causes more complexitty for wheel/rail interface. These differing requirements are all oriented toward same targets; increased durability and comfort, reduction of maintenance costs, and increased safety. First of all, the dynamic model is created in Simpack software. The dynamic behaviour of a railway vehicle can be analysed using three types of analysis: • linear analysis, for the evaluation of the vehicle model eigenvalues; • stability analysis, used for the evaluation of the critical speed of the vehicle; • dynamic analysis, to simulate the actual behaviour of the railway system in operating conditions. The complete vehicle–track system can be split up into three subsystems: vehicle, wheel–rail contact, and track.The first step in every vehicle computer simulation is to set up a mechanical model appropriate to fulfil the desired simulation task. The multibody system (MBS) approach is a powerful and widely used method for this procedure, especially if the vehicle’s running behaviour is to be analyzed. The typical model of a railway vehicle is composed of the three sub-assemblies: the car body, the front bogie, trailer bogie and the rear bogie. Each bogie consists of the bogie frame, bolster, and two wheelsets. In this research, the car body and bogie frames, as well as the wheelsets are treated as rigid bodies and are defined by their mass–inetria characteristics (mass, moments of inertia, and the position of the centre of gravity), and by the relative position of the bogies with respect to the car body itself. Each rigid body has six degrees of freedom; three translations and three rotations. All bodies are connected by linear and non-linear springs and dampers, representing the primary and secondary suspensions. Primary and secondary suspensions are often used to support the carbody components and to provide vibration isolation. The primary suspension is connected between the wheelset and the side frame, while the secondary suspension is connected between the bolster and the side frame. The primary and secondary suspensions consist of spring, damper, bump stop and trailer arm. Difference between contact areas is presented by creating contact models for these three wheel profiles. Mode frequencies and dampings are investigated by applying the modal analysis to investigate the stability of the system. Resonance characteristics of components such as carbody, bogie and bolster are observed with the aid of their mode shapes. Stability of the system indicated by investigating the damping values and root-loci figures for a speed range of 0-70 km/h. On the other hand, after the analysis of the most critical curve area under operating conditions, equivalent conicity did not exceed the limits. Lateral irregularity is applied to the straight track to see the lateral movement of the carbody during maximum velocity of 70 km/h. Lateral movement of the carbody is absorbed in time after the analysis and stability of the vehicle is proved for these conditions. Superiority of the TTP2 and TTP3 wheel profiles is shown by the lateral stability analysis results. Comfort index from EN 12299 standard is compared between three wheel profiles by using a track irregularity which is defined in ORE B176 and also superiority of the TTP2 and TTP3 is investigated with respect to comfort for passengers. L/V ratio, creepages, creep forces and lateral forces are compared for each wheel profile by curve analysis for the most critical curve in the line. As a result, altough none of the wheel profiles exceed the safety limit, TTP1 profile yields much safer results. On the other hand, TTP2 and TTP3 generates lower lateral forces during the curve than TTP1 profile. Therefore, TTP2 and TTP3 profiles have superior characteristcs for maintenance costs and irregularites on wheel and rail profile. To sum up, TTP1 profile is safer for curve analysis and TTP2 and TTP3 profiles have superior lateral stability and comfort characteristics and less lateral forces generated acting on the rail. Basic principle for wheel profile design process is building the relation between comfort and safety in a proper way. Comfort should be improved while safety limits should not be exceeded for designed wheel profile. With respect to these informations, optimization can be done on the wheel tread and flange area to get better results for safety and comfort. Matematik model Matlab programı kullanılarak hazırlanmış olup modeli doğrulamak adına aynı analiz hem Abaqus programında hem de Matlab programında koşturulmuştur. Her iki programdan elde edilen yerdeğiştirme değerlerinin birbirine benzer olduğu gözlenmiştir. Bu nedenle matematik model doğrulanmış olmuştur. Dalga yayılımı problemi için yapay sınır koşullarının uygulanması gerekmektedir. İleten sınır yöntemi, yapay sınır koşullarını sağlamak amacıyla bu çalışmada kullanılmıştır. Doğrulanmış matematik modele ileten sınır yöntemi de eklenerek kolon probleminde darbe yükü altında tek boyutlu dalga problemi incelenmiştir. Matlab programından elde edilen yerdeğiştirme değerlerinde sönümlemenin gerçekleştiği fark edilmiştir. Özellikle ileten sınır yönteminin uygulandığı sınırdan elde edilen yerdeğiştirme değerleri sıfır değeri etrafında salınım yaptıktan sonra analiz sonunda sıfır değerinde sabitlenmiştir., In this study, the edged based smoothed radial point interpolation method, kind of meshfree methods, is used fort he simulation of wave propagation problem. Numerical model is written at Matlab programme and Abaqus programme is used in order to validate the numerical model. The same analysis procedure and model are set into Matlab and Abaqus programme for the validation. The similar displacement results are obtained from Matlab and Abaqus programmes. For this reason numerical model is validated. Artificial boundary conditions must be implemented for the wave propagation problem. Transmitting boundary method is used for the simulation of the artificial boundary conditions. Column problem is set in order to critise one dimensional wave propagation problem under impulse load. Absorption is observed according to displacement results from Matlab programme. Especially for the transmitting boundary, displacement values are oscillated at zero. Bu çalışmada iki lineer elastik katının karışımından oluşan bir sürekli ortam için düzlem gerilme ve düzlem şekil değiştirme durumlarındaki Beltrami-Michell denklemleri elde edilmiştir. Bu amaçla iki elastik katı karışımı için verilmiş olan lineer bünye denklemleri, süreklilik denklemleri ve difüzyon kuvveti vektörü denklemi gibi çeşitli denklemlerden yararlanılmıştır. Düzlem gerilme ve düzlem şekil değiştirme durumları için karışımın iki bileşenine karşılık gelen ikişer Beltrami-Michell denklemi elde edilmiştir. Sonraki aşamada düzlem gerilme ve düzlem şekil değiştirme durumlarına örnek olan dönen ince disk ve dönen uzun silindirik çubuk problemleri, elde edilen Beltrami-Michell denklemleri ve Airy gerilme fonksiyonu yaklaşımı kullanılarak incelenmiş ve gerilme alanları ile yer değiştirme alanları elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar üzerinden çeşitli grafikler oluşturulmuş ve değerlendirmeleri ile birlikte sunulmuştur., A mixture is a continuous medium in which two or more different materials are diffused. In this study, the Beltrami-Michell equations in the plane stress and the plane strain conditions are obtained for a homogeneous mixture of linear elastic solids. For this purpose various equations that are given for a binary mixture of linear elastic solids are used such as linear constitutive equations, continuity equations, and diffusion force vector equation. Two Beltrami-Michell equations are obtained corresponding to the two mixture constituents for the both plane stress and the plane strain cases. Following this, the thin rotating disk and the long rotating rod problems that are edifying the plane stress and the plane strain cases are examined by the use of the obtained Beltrami-Michell equations and the Airy stress function approach. The stress and the displacement fields of the each constituent are obtained for both cases. İki zamanlı Wankel motoru konusunda yapılmış akademik bir çalışma bulunmadığı için dört zamanlı Wankel motoru verileri kullanılmıştır. İki zamanlı Wankel motorunda yanma karakteristiği dört zamanlı Wankel motorundakiyle aynı kabul edilmiştir. Üst ölü noktadaki gazların hızının üst ölü noktada ısı taşınımı katsayısına etkisi ihmal edilmiştir. İki zamanlı Wankel motorunda dolgu değişimi hesaplanarak indike basınç diyagramı çıkarılmıştır. Dolgu değişimi sırasında akış hızının ses hızının üstüne çıkması hallerinde dolgunun ses hızıyla hareket ettiği kabul edilmiştir. Manifoldlar çok kısa kabul edilerek manifoldlardaki basınç dalgalanması ihmal edilmiştir. Süpürme manifoldunda reed valf bulunduğu veya egzoz gazlarının geri tepmediği varsayılmıştır. Elde edilen basınç verileriyle segmanlara etkiyen bileşke kuvvet bulunmuştur. Segmanın bileşke kuvvetler etkisinde gövde yüzeyinden ayrılıp ayrılmadığı kontrol edilmiştir. Moment çalkalanması hesaplanarak motorun çalışma karakteristiği çıkarılmıştır. Moment karakteristiği incelendiğinde motorun volan kütlesine ihtiyaç duymadan çevrimini devam ettirdiği görülmüştür. Moment grafiğinden çıkarılan bir diğer sonuç ise motorun açısal hız çalkalanmasının azalması olmuştur. Mazda 13B motorunun gövdesinin iki zamanlı Wankel motoru için uygunluğunun yapısal analizi yapılmıştır., In this thesis, applicability of two-stroke Wankel type rotary engine suggested by Dr. Osman Akın Kutlar is studied. According to the absence of academic studies on two-stroke Wankel engine, data from four strokes Wankel engine is used. Combustion model is supposed the same as four strokes Wankel engine for the two-stroke Wankel engine. Effect of the gas velocity on the heat transfer coefficient at the top dead center is ignored. In two-stroke Wankel engine, mass exchange is calculated for indicated diagram. It’s accepted that the gas has the sound velocity if its velocity becomes supersonic during the mass exchange process. With acceptation the length of manifolds so short, pressure fluctuation is ignored. It’s supposed that there is a reed valve in the intake manifold i.e. exhaust gas could not able to push back into the intake manifold. Using the pressure data, resultant force is found effecting on apex seals. Apex seal is inspected that if its contact is lost or not from housing surface due to the resultant force. Momentum fluctuation is calculated for the engine working characteristic. When the momentum characteristic is studied, it’s seen that the engine does not need a flywheel to continue its cycle. Another result from momentum chart is reduction of the engine’s momentum fluctuation. Bu konu, teorik çalışmaları, bilgisayarda sayısal programlamaların yanı sıra laboratuarda deneysel çalışmaları da içermektedir. Kesirli türev hesaplamalı/Fraksiyonel viskoplastik model için sürünme ve gevşemenin matematiksel kavramları tanımlandı. Bu tanımlamalar klasik viskoplastik modelin mevcut sürünme ve gevşeme tanımlamaları ile nümerik programlar kullanılarak karşılaştırıldı. Sürünme-düzelme ve gevşeme testleri Polyamid6 (PA6) kemik şekilli numune ile viskoplastik bölgede gerçekleşirildi. Deneyler Almanya- Bochum Ruhr üniversitesi mekanik laboratuarında PA6 kemik şekil numuneleri ile gerçekleştirildi. Kesirli viskoplastik modelin parametreleri PA6 malzemesi için test sonuçları ve eğri-düzeltme metodu kullanılarak tanımlandı. Program kodları yeni parametre değerleri ve malzeme sabitlerini kullanarak yeniden çalıştırıldı. Kesirli viskoplastik model ve klasik viskoplastik model deney sonuçları ile karşılaştırıldı. Kesirli viskoplastik modelin klasik viskoplastik modele göre test sonuçlarına daha yakın sonuçlar verdiği tespit edildi. Ancak bu yeni fraksiyonel viskoplastik modelin sünme için sınırlamaları olduğu belirlendi., In this study, a new one-dimensional viscoplastic model was developed by using fractional calculus. This topic required theoretical studies, numerical programming at the computer as well as experimental work in the laboratory. Mathematical concepts of creep and relaxation for fractional viscoplastic model was defined. These definitions were compared with creep and relaxation definitions for classical viscoplastic model using numerical programs. Creep-recovery and relaxation tests were performed using Polyamide 6 (PA6) dog-bone specimens in viscoplastic region. Experiments were tested on PA6 dog-bone specimens in mechanic laboratory of Ruhr University of Bochum in Germany. Fractional viscoplastic model parameters were defined for PA6 material by using test results and curve fitting method. Program codes were run again using new parameter values and material constants. Fractional viscoplastic model and classical viscoplastic model were compared with experimental tests results. Fractional viscoplastic model give closer results to the experimental tests results than classical viscoplastic model is deduced. Bu sebeple günümüzde araştırmacılar dolaşım sisteminin sağlıklı ve patalojik vaka durumları üzerine araştırmalarını arttırarak sürdürmektedirler. Araştırmaların bir kısmı biyoloji ve tıp disiplinleri konularında ilerlerken aynı zamanda matematik, mekanik ve bilgi teknolojileri alanlarında da çalışmalar devamlı gelişme göstermektedir. Hesaplama ve ölçüm imkanlarının çok hızlı gelişmesiyle beraber dolaşım sistemini konu alan matematik ve mekanik denklemlerin oluşturulması ve incelenmesi kolaylaşmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, damarın kendini yeniden modellemesi ve gelişim sürecinin bir göstergesi olduğu belirtilen ön birim şekil değiştirmelerin üzerinde durularak literatürde bulunan teorik ön birim şekil değiştirme kabulünün doğrudan gelişmiş optik ölçümler ile ortaya çıkan sonuçlar karşılaştırılması ve sonuçların değerlendirilmesidir. Çalışma kapsamında öncelikle damar duvarının anatomik yapısı hakkında temel bilgiler verilmiştir. Bu bölümü damar duvar mekaniğinin incelenmesi bölümü takip etmiştir. Damar kinematiğine girilmiş ve ileri yöndeki şekil değiştirmeler için matematik ifadeler verilmiştir. Bu ifadelere ek olarak tersine denklemler de elde edilmiştir. Bir sonraki bölüm olan deneysel çalışmalar bölümünde ise öncelikle optik şekil değişimi ölçüm sistemlerinin doğrulukları üzerine çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Her bir testin hata miktarları değerlendirilmiştir. Damar duvarının ön birim şekil değiştirmelerinin ölçülebilmesi için bir deney düzeneği oluşturulmuş ve deneyler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Son bölümde çalışmanın değerlendirilerek sonuç çıkarımları yapılmış, ilerleyen dönemlerde çalışmanın nasıl geliştirilebileceğine dair yorumlara yer verilmiştir. Deneyler sonucunda doğrudan ölçüm sonuçlarıyla teorik sonuçlar arasında belirgin bir fark ortaya çıkmıştır. Ortaya konular bu fark ve çalışmanın çıktıları gelecekteki çalışmaları tetikleyecek ve katkı sağlayacak unsurlar olarak önem taşıyacaktır., Cardiovascular diseases are one of the most important threat to human life in civilized world. Therefore nowadays researchers are mainly concentrated on investigating healthy and pathological cases of cardiovascular system. While a part of reasearch proceed on biological and medical studies, simultaneously another part proceeds on the ever-growing mathematics, mechanics and information technologies. Developing and investigating mechanical and mathematical formulations entreating vasculature, became easier with the help of progression on computational and experimental systems. The aim of this study to focus on residual strains which is agreed to be one of the main indicator of growth in arterial wall, which is a biological tissue, and compare and evaluate experimental result obtained by advanced optical measurement systems to the result of theoretical assumptions In the scope of this study initially the basic anatomical and histological information about arteries is given. This section is followed by the section on the mechanics of arterial wall. Kinematics are introduced and mathematical formulations are given for forward deformation. In addition to that reverse deformation formulations are also derived. In the next chapter named experimental studies, firstly studies conducted on investigation of accuracy of optical correlation systems. Error values of each verification test are evaluated. Then, radial cuts are introduced to arterial wall segments and strains are measured on exterior surfaces. In the last section the implications of the study is evaluated. Ways of developing-contributing this study in future studies are indicated. At the end of the study a significant difference between theoretical and experimental results revealed. Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2011, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2011, Atlantoaksiyel kompleks hem boyun bölgesinin hareketliliğini sağlaması hem de kafatasının ağırlığını taşıması bakımından omurganın önemli bir yapısıdır. Normal şartlar altında dayanımı yüksek bir oluşum olmasına rağmen, kaza sonucu ortaya çıkabilecek olan ağır travmalarda yapıda hasar gözlenebilir, hatta travma yapının kafatasını taşıma özelliğinin yok olmasına sebep olabilir. Ancak cerrahi operasyonla düzeltilebilecek olan yapının görevini yerine getirememesi Atlantoaksiyel kompleksin stabilitesinin bozulmasının bir çeşidi olarak bilinmektedir. Bu sebepten, uygulanmakta olan veya ileride geliştirilebilecek olan cerrahi yöntemler üzerine yapılacak olan araştırmalar büyük önem taşımaktadır. Gün geçtikçe artan imkanlar, çeşitli metodlarla bilgisayar ortamında, yöntemlerin pozitif ve negatif yönlerini bulmaya izin vermektedir. Bu çalışmada, 2005 yılından bu yana İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirurji kliniğinde atlantoaksiyel kompleks instabilitesi olan hastalara uygulanmakta olan Bilateral C1-C2 pençe uygulamasının operasyon ve sonrası süreçlerini sayısal olarak da değerlendirebilmek amacı ile simülasyon yapılması amaçlanmıştır. Günümüze kadar, pek çok cerrahi yöntemle ilgili olan araştırmaların yer almasına rağmen, hastaların klinik anlamdaki takipleri dışında C1-C2 pençe uygulamasının etkinliğinin mühendislik açışından incelenmesinin olduğu bir çalışmaya rastlanmamıştır. Çalışmanın ilk kısmında, omurga anatomisi hakkında çok kısa bilgi verilmiştir. Bu bilgilendirmenin ardından, Atlantoaksiyel kompleks daha detaylı bir şekilde incelenmiştir. Atlantoaksiyel İnstabilitesi üzerinde basit bir şekilde durulduktan sonra yapının stabilitesinin sağlanması amaçlı uygulanan posterior cerrahi yöntemlerine yer verilmiştir. Sonlu elemanlar yönteminin ve biolojik yapılar için kullanılmakta olan malzeme modellerinin biraz daha iyi anlaşılabilmesi için sürekli ortamlar mekaniğinin biyomekaniğe uygulanması hakkında özet bilgi verilmiştir. Pençe uygulamasında kullanılmakta olan parçaların, Atlantoaksiyel kompleksin kemiksi ve yumuşak dokulu bileşenlerinin katı modellerinin oluşturulması hakkında açıklama yapılmıştır. Bir sonraki aşamada, hazırlanmış olan katı modelden yararlanarak sonlu elemanlar modeli oluşturulmuştur. Bu modelin yeterince dogru çalışıp çalışmadığından emin olmak için yakınsama testi ve model doğrulaması yapılmıştır. Cerrahi operasyon süreci ve sonrasını yansıtmak üzere verilen uygun yükleme koşulları sonrası elde edilen sonuçlara göre, operasyon sırasında kemiklerde mikro çatlakların, yumuşak dokularda da yırtılmaların meydana gelebileceği gözlenmiştir. Bu olumsuzluklara rağmen, uygulanan yöntem yapıya beklenen stabiliteyi sağlamaktadır. Son olarak, ileride yapılabilecek olan çalışmalar belirtilmiştir., The Atlantoaxial complex, with its function to generate rotational motion of the neck while bearing the weight of the head, is a crucially important structure of the spinal column. Although it is extraordinarily strong in nature, damage of the complex and even loss of head bearing ability can occur due to a severe trauma arising from an accident. In medical term this state is referred to as a type of Atlantoaxial Instability which can only be treated by surgical instrumentation. Thus, research on the currently used spine instrumentation techniques, as well as development of new methods have significant scientific and medical importance. On a computational basis, the efficiency and drawback of both currently applied surgical processes and also ones that may develop in the future can be investigated. This work is aimed at simulation of intraoperative and postoperative process of bilateral C1-C2 Claw application which has been adapted to patients with upper cervical instability at the Neurosurgery Clinic of Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical School since 2005. Even though much work has been done about various sorts of cervical spine instrumentation techniques in literature; excluding clinical survey, there is not any study for Bilateral C1-C2 Claw application on engineering basis to observe the effectiveness of the technique. In the first part of this study, the basics of spinal anatomy is presented. Afterwards Atlantoaxial complex has been introduced in detail. Posterior instrumentation techniques used to reconstitute atlantoaxial stability have been introduced following the brief information about Atlantoaxial Instability. Informational summary concerning continuum mechanics applied to biomechanics has also been provided. Solid modeling processes of the Bilateral C1-C2 Claw instrumentation components, hard and soft members of the Atlantoaxial complex for computer simulations have been also explained in detail. Next, basics of finite element methods in elasticity have been presented and the 3D solid model of the C1-C2 construct was used to perform Finite Element Analyses (FEA). The details on the convergence study and validation of the model to be ensured whether if finite element model of implanted Atlantoaxial Complex works fairly well or not have also given. The thesis concludes with the results based on FEA performed to simulate intraoperative and postoperative process of the proposed stabilization system. It has been commented that during intraoperative process micro cracks on osseous elements and tears on soft tissues can occur. Nevertheless, proposed method is found to be effective to stabilize atlantoaxial complex also from an engineering point of view.
