The history of the formation of the Iranian Community in Azerbaijan traces back to the South Caucasian region’s inclusion as part of the Russian Empire in the beginning of the XIX century under the Gulistan (1813) and Turkmenchay (1828) treaties after the Iran-Russia Wars. These events not only radically changed the geopolitical situation in the region but also turned out to be a historical turning point for the peoples of this region, particularly the Azerbaijani, who had lived compactly until that time on the vast territories from the north of Iran to the south of the Caucasus.

The rootstock potential of 21 bottle gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) collected from the Mediterranean region (Turkey) was investigated for watermelon with regard to plant growth, yield, and fruit quality. The Crimson Tide watermelon cultivar was used as a scion and 2 commercial rootstocks (L. siceraria) were also used for comparison. In greenhouse conditions, the survival rate of grafted plants and the eff ect of rootstocks on plant growth were determined. The grafted plants were planted under low tunnels in early spring and the eff ects of the rootstocks on early yield, total yield, and fruit quality were evaluated. The survival rates of the grafted plants varied from 83% to 100%. Survival rates of those with commercial rootstocks and local rootstocks were similar. Plants grafted onto 20-02, 31-09, 31-43, 35-01, and 46-03 were more vigorous than ungrafted control plants. Compared to the control plants, grafted plants had 37% to 80% higher plant dry weight. All of the grafted plants except CT/Macis produced a higher yield than the control plants. The plants grafted onto 6 of the local rootstocks had significantly greater total yields than those grafted onto the commercial rootstocks. Among the local bottle gourd landraces tested, the 01-16, 07-45, 20-06, 31-09, 31-15, and 46-03 were found to be promising genotypes with regard to total yield. Early yield was not significantly affected by rootstock. The quality parameters of the fruits harvested from the grafted and control plants were found to be similar except for a limited number of graft combinations. It was concluded that germplasm from Turkish bottle gourds has a high rootstock potential for watermelon with regard to the investigated parameters. © TÜBİTAK.

The morphology of 279 accessions of Cyclamen sp. growing naturally in Tur-key, namely C. alpinum (syn. C. trochopteranthum), C. graecum, C. hederifolium (syn. C. neapolitanum) and C. mirabile, was characterized. Plants with intact tubers were collected from locations in Antalya, Isparta, Aydın, Muğla, İzmir and Denizli, determined by GPS, where they grow naturally in spring and autumn. The morphology of the four Cyclamen species was characterized using one year old regenerated plants based on 27 morphological traits (13 flower, 11 leaf, 2 plant, 1 tuber). There were distinct differ-ences among these accessions related to petal colour, pedicel length, leaf length and width, leaf shape, and tuber diameter. Even though principle component analysis con-firmed the grouping of characters into species-specific clusters, a wider range of morpho-logical data as well as molecular data are needed for more reliable conclusions to be drawn about the classification of these Cyclamen species. © by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Przyrodniczego w Lublinie, Lublin 2016.

Biotic and abiotic stress conditions can occur both in field and greenhouse, they cause negative effects on plant production. Therefore, breeding studies for tolerance to stress conditions are very important. In this study, the stomatal and leaf characteristics of 14 hybrid genotypes, resistant to race 0 and 1 of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis, eight parental dihaploid inbred lines and seven original diploid melon lines, from which inbred lines were developed, were investigated under saline conditions. Experiment was established in hydroponic culture. NaCl 200 mM was applied to plants, by comparing with control. Control and NaCl treated plants were compared as regard to sonic leaf (leaf area, leaf width and leaf length) and some stomata (number of stomata in unit area, stomata diameter and stomata length) characteristics. The results revealed that in saline condition, number of stomata in unit area increased; however, size of stomata decreased. Also leaf area, width and length were decreased when compared to control.

10th EUCARPIA Meeting on Genetics and Breeding of Cucurbitaceae -- OCT 15-18, 2012 -- Antalya, TURKEY WOS: 000345687100038 This research was carried out between 2007 and 2008 to determine drought tolerance of domestic and wild watermelon genotypes in Sanliurfa (Turkey) condition. A total of 32 wild and domestic watermelon genotypes were used in this experiment. Morphological and physiological treatments such as leaf relative-water content, leaf temperature, chlorophyll contents, leaf water potential, leaf color, leaf area, number of stomata, width of stomata, length of stomata, plant height, number of nods on the plant, plant dry matter ratio, main stem diameter, turgority and final drought resistance tests were examined. Drip irrigation treatments included complete irrigation cut off, dry (I-0), full irrigation based on replenishment of soil water depleted from 0-90 cm profile (I-1) and 50 % full irrigation (I-2). At the end of the experiment, fifteen genotypes (Kar-24, Kar-25, Kar-27, Kar-59, Kar-86, Kar-114, Kar-143, Kar-147, Kar-163, Kar-185, Kar-197, Kar-203, Kar-215, Kar-218 and Kar-224) were found as tolerant and seventeen genotypes (Kar-26, Kar-35, Kar-37, Kar-39, Kar-98, Kar-99, Kar-117, Kar-140, Kar-154, Kar-177, Kar-184, Kar-212, Kar-234, Kar-243, Kar-330, Kar-332 and Kar-325) were found as intolerant.
