OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of iohexol on standardized quantitative urine culture results in dogs. The authors hypothesized that the presence of iohexol in inoculated urine samples would result in lower bacterial concentrations (CFU/mL) and, therefore, decrease culture sensitivity. SAMPLE Urine samples were aseptically collected during cystoscopy from a single client-owned dog untreated with antimicrobials. PROCEDURES An experimental controlled study. The urine sample was divided into 38 aliquots (0.5 mL each) that were used as negative controls or inoculated with an equal amount of Escherichia coli (105 CFU/mL). Different volumes (0.1 and 0.5 mL) of contrast or saline were added to the aliquots and quantitative culture results were compared. Two different incubation times between the preparation of aliquots and culture were evaluated (15 minutes and 24 hours). RESULTS All aliquots from samples inoculated with E. coli (positive controls and iohexol-group) had the same reported quantitative result (104 CFU/mL). No growth was reported for the negative controls. Iohexol did not show any anti-E. coli properties in canine urine cultures for dilutions up to 1:2 contrast:urine and concentrations up to 120 mgI/mL. No difference was reported when iohexol was incubated with inoculated urine for 15 minutes or 24 hours. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Based on the experimental in vitro conditions described, administration of iohexol before the collection of urine during urologic procedures does not negatively impact the isolation and growth of E. coli.

Copper chalcogenide-based nanocrystals (NCs) are a suitable replacement for toxic Cd/Pb chalcogenide-based NCs in a wide range of applications including photovoltaics, optoelectronics, and biological imaging. However, despite rigorous research, direct synthesis approaches of this class of compounds suffer from inhomogeneous size, shape, and composition of the NC ensembles, which is reflected in their broad photoluminescence (PL) bandwidths. A partial cation exchange (CE) strategy, wherein host cations in the initial binary copper chalcogenide are replaced by incoming cations to form ternary/quaternary multicomponent NCs, has been proven to be instrumental in achieving better size, shape, and composition control to this class of nanomaterials. Additionally, adopting synthetic strategies which help to eliminate inhomogeneities in the NC ensembles can lead to narrower PL bandwidths, as was shown by single-particle studies on I–III–VI2-based semiconductor NCs. In this work, we formulate a two-step colloidal synthesis of Cu–Zn–In–Se (CZISe) NCs via a partial CE pathway. The first step is the synthesis of Cu2–xSe NCs, which serve as a template for the subsequent CE reaction. The second step is the incorporation of the In3+and Zn2+guest cations into the synthesized Cu2–xSe NCs via simultaneous injection of both metal precursors, which results in gradient-alloyed CZISe NCs with a Zn-rich surface. The as-synthesized NCs exhibit near-infrared (NIR) PL without an additional shell growth, which is typically required in most of the developed protocols. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these Cu chalcogenide-based NCs reaches 20%. These NCs also exhibit intriguingly narrow PL bands, which challenges the notion of broad PL bands being an inherent property of this class of NCs. Additionally, a variation in the feed ratios of the incoming cations, i.e., In/Zn, results in the variation of the composition of the synthesized NCs. Henceforth, the optical properties of these NCs could be tuned by a simple variation of the composition of the NCs achieved by varying the feed ratios of the incoming cations. Within a narrow size distribution, the PL maxima range from 980 to 1060 nm, depending on the composition of the NCs. Post-synthetic surface modification of the synthesized NCs enabled the replacement of the parent long-chain organic ligands with smaller species, which is essential for their prospective applications requiring efficient charge transport. With PL emission extended into the NIR, the synthesized NCs are suitable for an array of potential applications, most importantly in the area of solar energy harvesting and bioimaging. The large Stokes shift inherent to these materials, their absorption in the solar range, and their NIR PL within the biological window make them suitable candidates.

This paper examines the trade resilience of low-income and food-deficit countries (LIFDCs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic declaration, LIFDCs have faced unique challenges due to their heavy reliance on food imports. This paper identifies the differential trade effects of COVID-19 lockdowns on agri-food exports to LIFDCs using a dynamic treatment effects model and monthly product-level agri-food trade data. The baseline results show a sharp decrease in agri-food exports to LIFDCs in the first three months after the pandemic declaration and a gradual recovery afterward. Additional analyses at the product and country levels show that LIFDCs focused on securing cereal products from foreign sources and that imports of other agri-food products contracted considerably relative to the counterfactual. The foreign supply chains of LIFDCs were less resilient in the first quarter after the treatment than those of other low-income countries, but their recovery was also faster than in those other countries. The paper provides the empirical underpinning for concerns raised by international organizations regarding the resilience of agri-food supply chains and COVID-19 containment measures, revealing the differential impact that lockdowns had on agri-food trade resilience in the developing world.

In the current work we employ multi-phase-field simulations to understand the effect of remelting on microstructure evolution, especially on nucleation of new grains during selective electron beam melting (SEBM) of Ni-based super alloy. The phase-field model is coupled to both mass and heat transport phenomena including release of latent heat of solidification. We run remelting simulations in both as cast and homogenized conditions. Experimental observations show that remelting triggers the nucleation of new grains at the melt pool border. The simulation results shed more light on the local conditions at the melt pool border thereby enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the nucleation. The simulation results are validated with experimental results obtained for the Ni–20.5 mol pct Al model binary alloy.

Sign languages make use of the full expressive power of the visual-gestural modality to report the utterances and/or actions of another person. A signer can shift into the perspective of one or more persons and reproduce the utterances or actions from the perspective of these persons. This modality-specific device of utterance and action report is called role shift or constructed action. Especially in sign language narration, role shift is a productive and expressive means that can be used to demonstrate linguistic and non-linguistic actions. Recent developments in sign language linguistics put forth new formal semantic analyses of role shift at the interface between sign language and gesture, integrating insights from classical cognitive and formal analyses of quotation, demonstration and perspective/context shift in spoken and sign languages. In this article, I build on recent accounts of role shift as a modality-specific device of demonstration and show that a modified version of this theory even accounts for cases of complex demonstrations including hybrid demonstrations, multiple demonstrations and demonstrations involving a complex interaction of gestural and linguistic components.

Die Kommissionierung zählt zu den arbeits- und kostenintensivsten Prozessen in der Intralogistik. Kommissionierende werden dabei häufig hohen körperlichen Belastungen ausgesetzt, die das Risiko für Erkrankungen und Arbeitsausfälle erhöhen. Dieser Beitrag beleuchtet die beschriebene Problematik und stellt einfach umsetzbare Empfehlungen vor, um physische Belastungen in der Kommissionierung zu reduzieren und gleichzeitig die Prozesseffizienz zu steigern.

Heavy alkaline earth metals offer radionuclides which are promising candidates for radiopharmaceutical applications like barium-131 for diagnosis or radium-223/-224 – with similar properties to barium – for targeted alpha-particle therapy. However, there is a lack of suitable chelation agents especially for these metal ions. A series of calix[4]crown-6 derivatives with perfluoroalkylsulfonylcarboxamide functions (RF = CF3, C2F5, i-C3F7, n-C4F9) was synthesized to serve as cage-like chelators for a strong complexation of Ba2+ and Ra2+. These functional ligands are deprotonated even at slightly acidic pH due to the intense electron withdrawing effect of the sulfonamide group. The obtained ligands were easily converted the desired barium complexes as well as into calix-crown compounds containing two sodium ions. DFT calculation methods were used to discover either the binding behavior of the metal ions with the desired ligands as well as the influence of the different donor groups from the chelating moiety of the calixarenes with respect to different pH. Radiolabeling procedures with the radionuclides barium-133 and radium-224 as [133Ba]BaCl2 and [224Ra]Ra(NO3)2 were performed to determine association constant values between 4.1 and 8.2 for the appropriate M2+ complexes using a two-phase extraction procedure. A stability test using physiological Ca2+ solution showed a minor release of approx. 1-7% of the central ions (Ba2+ respectively Ra2+) from the complexes.

Item does not contain fulltext The vast majority of human genes encode multiple isoforms through alternative splicing, and the temporal and spatial regulation of those isoforms is critical for organismal development and function. The spliceosome, which regulates and executes splicing reactions, is primarily composed of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) that consist of small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) and protein subunits. snRNA gene transcription is initiated by the snRNA-activating protein complex (SNAPc). Here, we report ten individuals, from eight families, with bi-allelic, deleterious SNAPC4 variants. SNAPC4 encoded one of the five SNAPc subunits that is critical for DNA binding. Most affected individuals presented with delayed motor development and developmental regression after the first year of life, followed by progressive spasticity that led to gait alterations, paraparesis, and oromotor dysfunction. Most individuals had cerebral, cerebellar, or basal ganglia volume loss by brain MRI. In the available cells from affected individuals, SNAPC4 abundance was decreased compared to unaffected controls, suggesting that the bi-allelic variants affect SNAPC4 accumulation. The depletion of SNAPC4 levels in HeLa cell lines via genomic editing led to decreased snRNA expression and global dysregulation of alternative splicing. Analysis of available fibroblasts from affected individuals showed decreased snRNA expression and global dysregulation of alternative splicing compared to unaffected cells. Altogether, these data suggest that these bi-allelic SNAPC4 variants result in loss of function and underlie the neuroregression and progressive spasticity in these affected individuals.

The renal renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is involved in the development of chronic kidney disease. Here, we investigated whether mice with reduced renal angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE−/−) are protected against aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN). To further elucidate potential molecular mechanisms, we assessed the renal abundances of several major RAS components. AAN was induced using aristolochic acid I (AAI). Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was determined using inulin clearance and renal protein abundances of renin, angiotensinogen, angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) 2, and Mas receptor (Mas) were determined in ACE−/− and C57BL/6J control mice by Western blot analyses. Renal ACE activity was determined using a colorimetric assay and renal angiotensin (Ang) (1–7) concentration was determined by ELISA. GFR was similar in vehicle-treated mice of both strains. AAI decreased GFR in controls but not in ACE−/− mice. Furthermore, AAI decreased renal ACE activity in controls but not in ACE−/− mice. Vehicle-treated ACE−/− mice had significantly higher renal ACE2 and Mas protein abundances than controls. AAI decreased renal ACE2 protein abundance in both strains. Furthermore, AAI increased renal Mas protein abundance, although the latter effect did not reach statistical significance in the ACE−/− mice. Renal Ang(1–7) concentration was similar in vehicle-treated mice of both strains. AAI increased renal Ang(1–7) concentration in the ACE−/− mice but not in the controls. Mice with reduced renal ACE are protected against AAN. Our data suggest that in the face of renal ACE deficiency, AAI may activate the ACE2/Ang(1–7)/Mas axis, which in turn may deploy its reno-protective effects.

Aufgrund der Häufigkeit von Unfällen im Kindesalter und der Notwendigkeit von ambulanter und stationärer Betreuung sehen sich Pflegefachkräfte häufig mit Traumata konfrontiert. Gerade Schädel-Hirn-Traumata sowie thermische Verletzungen bedürfen bei der Versorgung dieser Kinder einer hohen Kompetenz und stellen große Anforderungen an das interdisziplinäre Team. Im folgenden Artikel wird das SHT aufgrund seiner Komplexität näher beleuchtet.

O presente texto tem como objetivo analisar a proposta da Base Nacional Comum para a Formação de Professoresda Educação Básica (BNC-Formação), Resolução CNE/CP n. 2, de 20 de dezembro de 2019, e suas implicaçõespara a formação docente. Este estudo, metodologicamente, é de cunho bibliográfico, documental e tem perspectivaqualitativa, com ênfase em autores que discutem as políticas educacionais e a formação de professores/as. Asanálises evidenciaram o viés pragmatista e reducionista na proposta de formação por competências, tornando esseprocesso cada vez mais de cunho instrumental, com o propósito de atender às necessidades do capital e às regrasdo mercado.

Purpose Seizures pose a significant burden in patients with primary and secondary brain tumors during the end-of-life period. A wide range of 6 to 56% of clinically observed epileptic seizures at the end of life has been reported. We aimed to analyse the incidence of epileptic seizures at the end of life in brain tumor patients more accurately using not only clinical but also electrophysiological findings. Methods This retrospective, single center study included brain tumor patients who died during the stay on the ward or within 7 days after discharge between 01/2015 and 08/2020. Clinical observation of seizures derived from the original medical records and EEG findings (within 45 days prior to death) were analyzed to determine the incidence of seizures in that period. Results Of the 68 eligible patients, 50 patients (73.5%) suffered from seizures within 45 days prior to death, of which n = 24 had a status epilepticus. The diagnosis of seizures/ status epilepticus was determined either by the presentation of clinical signs in 45 patients and if not, by the detection of a (possible) non-convulsive status epilepticus in the EEG of five patients. Conclusion In the presence of neurologically trained staff and with the frequent use of routine EEG, we were able to identify seizures and to distinguish status epilepticus from encephalopathy/ hypoactive delirium. We detected a higher incidence of seizures and status epilepticus at the end of life in neurooncological patients than previously reported.

Psycholinguists have yet to reach a consensus on what role constituent morphemes play in the processing of compound words, although some recent work suggests that morphemes are activated obligatorily during processing. In the current study, we investigate whether people use morphemes to attempt meaning construction even for pseudo-compounds which are words that appear to have a compound structure, but in fact do not (e.g., carpet is not car + pet). We obtained relational entropies (a measure of potential relational competition) for a set of pseudo-compound words based on responses from a possible relations task. The relational entropy values as well as frequency of the prime (e.g., carpet) and target (e.g., car) were then used to predict the processing of the pseudo-first constituents after exposure to the pseudo-compound masked primes. We observed a significant three-way interaction between entropy, target frequency, and prime frequency. Our results suggest that meaning construction is attempted for pseudo-compound words.

This paper presents the results of a Sentence Reproduction Task (SRT) investigating conditional sentences in German Sign Language (DGS). We found that participants mark conditional sentences in DGS by systematically using different non-manual markers on the antecedent and the consequent. In addition, these non-manual markers were frequently used in combination with one or two manual signs. However, the manual markers were omitted in the test sentences, i.e., the input stimuli the participants were asked to reproduce. The results of our experimental study are, on the one hand, consistent with descriptions of manual and non-manual strategies used to mark conditional sentences in different unrelated sign languages. On the other hand, our findings provide new insights on the multi-layered marking of conditional sentences in DGS.

Using some renditions of Sītā stories from the epic Rāmāyaṇa, this article will endeavor to make a case for reflecting on presentist concerns and interests and being aware of their impact on scholarship. Arguably, narrow syntactical and semantic analyses of translations and of purported convergences in historical and linguistic analyses do not suffice to give a handle on understanding how these concerns and interests might influence selection of pertinent sources and their readings. A more sustained analysis of their impact is needed. Shun Kwong-loi’s methodological work provides a good ground to take that conversation forward.

Purpose Non-invasive prediction of the tumour of origin giving rise to brain metastases (BMs) using MRI measurements obtained in radiological routine and elucidating the biological basis by matched histopathological analysis. Methods Preoperative MRI and histological parameters of 95 BM patients (female, 50; mean age 59.6 ± 11.5 years) suffering from different primary tumours were retrospectively analysed. MR features were assessed by region of interest (ROI) measurements of signal intensities on unenhanced T1-, T2-, diffusion-weighted imaging and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) normalised to an internal reference ROI. Furthermore, we assessed BM size and oedema as well as cell density, proliferation rate, microvessel density and vessel area as histopathological parameters. Results Applying recursive partitioning conditional inference trees, only histopathological parameters could stratify the primary tumour entities. We identified two distinct BM growth patterns depending on their proliferative status: Ki67high BMs were larger (p = 0.02), showed less peritumoural oedema (p = 0.02) and showed a trend towards higher cell density (p = 0.05). Furthermore, Ki67high BMs were associated with higher DWI signals (p = 0.03) and reduced ADC values (p = 0.004). Vessel density was strongly reduced in Ki67high BM (p p ≤ 0.03 for all features) with SCLCs representing predominantly the Ki67high group, while NSCLCs rather matching with Ki67low features. Conclusion Interpretable and easy to obtain MRI features may not be sufficient to predict directly the primary tumour entity of BM but seem to have the potential to aid differentiating high- and low-proliferative BMs, such as SCLC and NSCLC.

Die Vorteile im Vergleich zu den klassischen energieintegrierenden Detektoren (EID) liegen im reduzierten elektronischen Rauschen, der höheren Ortsauflösung, dem erhöhten Kontrast-Rausch-Verhältnis und einer besseren Dosiseffizienz. Zusätzlich kann der Einsatz von Kontrastmitteln reduziert werden. In diesem Artikel werden die technischen Grundlagen erläutert.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented the midwifery workforce with challenges for maintaining access to high-quality care and safety for patients and perinatal care providers. This study analyzed associations between different types of professional autonomy and changes in midwives' employment and compensation during the early months of the pandemic.An online survey distributed to midwifery practices in fall 2020 compared midwives' employment and compensation in February 2020 and September 2020. Chi-square analysis determined associations between those data and measures of midwives' autonomy: state practice environment, midwifery practice ownership, intrapartum practice setting, and midwifery participation in practice decision-making.Participants included lead midwives from 727 practices, representing 50 states and the District of Columbia. Full-time equivalent (FTE) positions and number of full-time midwives were stable for 77% of practices, part-time employment for 83%, and salaries for 72%. Of the remaining practices, more practices lost FTE positions, full-time positions, part-time positions, and salary (18%, 15%, 9%, and 18%, respectively) than gained (11%, 8%, 8%, and 9%, respectively). Early retirements and furloughs were experienced by 9% of practices, and 18% lost benefits. However, midwifery practice ownership was significantly associated with increased salaries (20.3% vs 7.1%; Plt; .001) and decreased loss of benefits (7.8% vs 19.9%; P = .002) and furloughs (3.8 vs 10.1%; P = .04). Community-based practice was significantly associated with increased FTE positions (19.0% vs 8.8%; P = .005), part-time positions (17.4% vs 5.1%; Plt; .001), and salary (19.7% vs 7.0%; Plt; .001), as well as decreased loss of benefits (11.5% vs 21.1%; P = .02) and early retirement (1.4% vs 6.6%; P = .03). State practice environment and participation in practice decision-making were not directly associated with employment and compensation changes.Policies should facilitate midwifery practice ownership and the expansion and integration of community birth settings for greater perinatal care workforce stability, greater flexibility to respond to disasters, and improved patient access to care and health outcomes.

The Micro- and Nanoplastics Cluster – now known as CUSP “The European Research Cluster to Understand the Health Impacts of Micro- and Nanoplastics” - has been formed to facilitate collaborations between five research projects funded under Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, SC1-BHC-36-2020 - Micro- and nanoplastics in our environment: Understanding exposures and impacts on human health. These initiatives are working together to enhance impact by synergizing communication and dissemination strategies, and sharing expertise such as analytical methods, exposure assessments, inter-lab comparisons, representative materials, and data exchange. The cluster will also collaborate closely with the JRC, and annual cluster meetings will be organized to report on joint activities within and beyond the cluster. This document describes the Cluster web portal and visual identity, developed as a common deliverable of the five CUSP projects. Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection has recently received special attention due to its critical role in safely deploying modern deep learning (DL) architectures. This work proposes a reconstruction-based multi-class OOD detector that operates on radar range doppler images (RDIs). The detector aims to classify any moving object other than a person sitting, standing, or walking as OOD. We also provide a simple yet effective pre-processing technique to detect minor human body movements like breathing. The simple idea is called respiration detector (RESPD) and eases the OOD detection, especially for human sitting and standing classes. On our dataset collected by 60GHz short-range FMCW Radar, we achieve AUROCs of 97.45%, 92.13%, and 96.58% for sitting, standing, and walking classes, respectively. We perform extensive experiments and show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) OOD detection methods. Also, our pipeline performs 24 times faster than the second-best method and is very suitable for real-time processing., Accepted at ICASSP 2023

Purpose The Working Group for Neuro-Oncology of the German Society for Radiation Oncology in cooperation with members of the Neuro-Oncology Working Group of the German Cancer Society aimed to define a practical guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of radiation-induced necrosis (RN) of the central nervous system (CNS). Methods Panel members of the DEGRO working group invited experts, participated in a series of conferences, supplemented their clinical experience, performed a literature review, and formulated recommendations for medical treatment of RN including bevacizumab in clinical routine. Conclusion Diagnosis and treatment of RN requires multidisciplinary structures of care and defined processes. Diagnosis has to be made on an interdisciplinary level with the joint knowledge of a neuroradiologist, radiation oncologist, neurosurgeon, neuropathologist, and neuro-oncologist. A multistep approach as an opportunity to review as many characteristics as possible to improve diagnostic confidence is recommended. Additional information about radiotherapy (RT) techniques is crucial for the diagnosis of RN. Misdiagnosis of untreated and progressive RN can lead to severe neurological deficits. In this practice guideline, we propose a detailed nomenclature of treatment-related changes and a multistep approach for their diagnosis.

The purity and safety of water as a finite resource is highly important in order to meet current and future human needs. To address this issue, the usage of environmentally friendly and biodegradable adsorbers and flocculants is essential. Chitosan, as a biopolymer, features tremendous properties as an adsorber and flocculant for water treatment. For the application of chitosan as an adsorber under acidic aqueous conditions, such as acid mine drainage, chitosan has been modified with hydrophobic hexanoyl chloride (H-chitosan) to reduce the solubility at a lower pH. In order to investigate the influence of the substitution of the hexanoyl chloride on the adsorption properties of chitosan, two chitosans of different molecular weights and of three different functionalization degrees were analyzed for the adsorption of CdSO4(aq) and Al2(SO4)3(aq). Among biobased adsorbents, H-chitosan derived from the shorter Chitosan exhibited extraordinarily high maximum adsorption capacities of 1.74 mmol/g and 2.06 mmol/g for Cd2+ and sulfate, and 1.76 mmol/g and 2.60 mmol/g for Al3+ and sulfate, respectively.

Objective: Remote self-assessment of the revised amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale (ALSFRS-R) using digital data capture was investigated for its feasibility as an add-on to ALSFRS-R assessments during multidisciplinary clinic visits. Methods: From August 2017 to December 2021, at 12 ALS centers in Germany, an observational study on remote assessment of the ALSFRS-R was performed. In addition to the assessment of ALSFRS-R during clinic visits, patients were offered a digital self-assessment of the ALSFRS-R - either on a computer or on a mobile application ('ALS-App'). Results: An estimated multicenter cohort of 4,670 ALS patients received care at participating ALS centers. Of these patients, 971 remotely submitted the ALSFRS-R, representing 21% of the multicenter cohort. Of those who opted for remote assessment, 53.7% (n = 521) completed a minimum of 4 ALSFRS-R per year with a mean number of 10.9 assessments per year. Different assessment frequencies were found for patients using a computer (7.9 per year, n = 857) and mobile app (14.6 per year, n = 234). Patients doing remote assessments were more likely to be male and less functionally impaired but many patients with severe disability managed to complete it themselves or with a caregiver (35% of remote ALSFRS-R cohort in King's Stage 4). Conclusions: In a dedicated ALS center setting remote digital self-assessment of ALSFRS-R can provide substantial data which is complementary and potentially an alternative to clinic assessments and could be used for research purposes and person-level patient management. Addressing barriers relating to patient uptake and adherence are key to its success.
