JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) is the first ESA-led mission devoted to explore the Jupiter system. It will launch in 2023 and will arrive at Jupiter in 2031, performing an extensive tour of the planet and of the icy Galilean satellites Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. In the latest mission profile, 11 Ganymede flybys and 21 Callisto flybys are expected, before entering orbit around Ganymede in late 2034. JUICE will indeed be the first spacecraft ever to orbit an icy satellite, allowing an unprecedented analysis of its surface, interior, and tenuous atmosphere. This dedicated orbital phase will last at least 9 months and will be carried out using different trajectories and altitudes over the surface, which allows performing a complex and target-oriented observation plan. To this end, we identified several categories of regions of interest (RoI) on both Ganymede and Callisto, assigning them priorities based on the currently available geological information and on their visibility period (Stephan et al., 2021). In this talk, we briefly discuss these terrain categories, illustrating the coverage expected to be achieved on Ganymede and Callisto by some remote sensing instruments. The joint analysis of multi-wavelength datasets for specific RoIs will allow shedding light on their morphology and composition. In a broader view, we emphasize the potential of some of these regions in terms of complementarity and synergies obtainable by combining data from multiple payload instruments, thus providing a "three-dimensional view" that is required for a comprehensive understanding of the physical processes taking place between the surface and both the shallow subsurface and the near-surface atmosphere. We report on the mineralogic mapping of quadrangle Ac-H-6 ‘Haulani,’ one of five quadrangles that cover the equatorial region of the dwarf planet Ceres.

Ahuna Mons is the highest mountain on Ceres. A unique complex in terms of size, shape, and morphology, Ahuna is bordered by flanks of the talus around its summit. Recent work by Ruesch et al. based on Dawn's Framing Camera images shed light on the possible origin of Ahuna Mons. According to Ruesch et al. (2016), Ahuna Mons is formed by a volcanic process involving the ascent of cryomagma and extrusion onto the surface followed by dome development and subsequent spreading. Here we analyzed in detail the composition of Ahuna Mons, using data acquired by the visible and infrared spectrometer aboard Dawn. The spectral analysis reveals a relatively high abundance of carbonates and a nonhomogeneous variation in carbonate composition and abundance along Ahuna's flanks, associated with a lower amount of the Ceres's ubiquitous NH4-phyllosilicates over a large portion of the flanks. The grain size is coarser on the flanks than in the surrounding regions, suggesting the presence of fresher material, also compatible with a larger abundance of carbonates. Thermal variations are seen in Ahuna, supporting the evidence of different compactness of the surface regolith in specific locations. Results of the spectral analysis are consistent with a possible cryovolcanic origin which exposed fresher material that slid down on the flanks.

Die Untersuchung der Oberflächenzusammensetzung von Ganymed basiert auf Daten des abbildenden Spektrometers NIMS an Bord der Raumsonde Galileo, das die Ganymedoberfläche im Spektralbereich des Nahen Infrarot detektiert. Die Verarbeitung der vorliegenden Spektraldaten einschließlich der quantitativen Analyse der spektralen Signaturen in den Reflexionsspektren von Ganymed wie deren Charakterisierung in Abhängigkeit der geologischen Oberflächenstrukturen bildet den zentralen Teil der Arbeit. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Veränderungen der Reflexionseigenschaften der Ganymedoberfläche auf den wechselnden Anteil von Wassereis und Gesteinsmaterial und dem Gehalt an CO2 zurückzuführen sind. Die simultane Analyse der Absorptionen von Wassereis erlaubt es ferner, erstmals Veränderungen des relativen Anteils und der Partikelgröße von Wassereis getrennt voneinander zu erfassen. Es wurden Veränderungen festgestellt, die sowohl eng mit der Geologie in Zusammenhang stehen und aber auch die Wechselwirkung zwischen Ganymed und dem interplanetaren Raum widerspiegeln. So ist die Konzentration von Gesteinsmaterial in den geologisch ältesten Regionen Ganymeds das Resultat des Bombardements mit (mikro-) meteoritischem Material. Dagegen repräsentiert in geologisch jungen Einschlagskratern konzentriertes feinkristallines Wassereis relativ frisches aus dem Untergrund freigelegtes Material. Die Wechselwirkung mit dem interplanetaren Raum zeigt sich hauptsächlich in den Veränderungen der Partikelgröße von Wassereis. Relativ große Partikel (> 500µm) wurden nahe dem Äquator (~30°N bis ~30°S) gemessen und als Folge der hier dominierenden Sublimationsprozesse interpretiert. Ganymeds selbsterzeugtes Magnetfeld schützt hier die Oberfläche weitestgehend vor einfallender Strahlung aus dem interplanetaren Raum. The central part of this work includes the processing of the spectral data, the quantitative analysis of the spectral signatures in the reflectance spectra of Ganymede, and the characterization of their spatial variations depending on geological surface features. The results show, that variations of the reflectance properties of Ganymede s surface attribute to varying amounts of water ice, rocky material and the contents of gaseous CO2. Additionally, the simultaneous analysis of the water ice absorptions made it possible to separate changes of the amount and the particle size of water ice. Spectral variations were found to be partly related to the geology, that is the age and the geological evolution, but also to reflect the interaction between Ganymede and the interplanetary space. Thus, the concentration of rocky material in geological oldest regions of Ganymede is effected by the bombardment with (micro-) meteoritic material. Almost pure and fine crystalline water ice in the vicinity of young impact craters represents fresh excavated material of Ganymede s ice crust. The interaction between Ganymede s surface and the interplanetary space influences mainly variations of the particle size of water ice. Large particles (> 500 µm) were measured close to the equator (~30°N to ~30°S) and are assumed to be caused by sublimation processes, which dominate this region. Ganymede s own magnetic field protects the equatorial region mostly from high energetic incoming radiation. However this radiation is supposed to be responsible for the decreasing of the particle size (< 10 µm) toward the polar regions. Contrary to previous assumptions, the results of this work show no relationship between the existence of rocky material and the content of CO2. This work allowed for the first time the identification of higher concentrations of CO2 in young morphologically fresh impact craters as a direct result of the impact process. With increasing age the impact craters are characterized by an adjustment between the impact craters and their surrounding region with respect to the relative amount of water ice, the size of the water ice particles but also to the content of CO2. CO2 remains within the surface material of Ganymede caused by the equilibrium between the thermal crystallization and amorphization of water ice due to incoming (micro-) meteorites and radiation from Jupiter s magnetosphere. This is opposite to the neighbouring moon Callisto, where CO2 escapes into an atmosphere.

Der Ausgangspunkt der Exploration war die Frage, welche Relevanz interkulturelle Themen in der polizeilichen Ausbildung haben respektive haben sollten, leisten doch Polizeibeamtinnen und –beamten ihre Arbeit mehr und mehr in interkulturellen Kontexten. Der Wunsch der Exploration dieser Frage wurde von Seiten der Polizei an die Hessische Stiftung Friedens- und Konfliktforschung (HSFK, Frankfurt) herangetragen. Weiterhin prüfte ein Teilprojekt der Universität Mainz, inwieweit die entsprechenden Lehrmaterialien auf die Thematisierung interkultureller Aspekte abzustimmen sind. Die Exploration, die im Winter 2002/2003 durchgeführt wurde, setzte sich mit zwei großen Themenbereichen auseinander: a) Einerseits eruierte sie den Zusammenhang von Ausbildungsangeboten und Praxiserfordernissen (Kapitel 4). Wie Studierende und Beamte, die seit kurzem ihr Studium an der VFH abgeschlossen haben, die Angebote und den Bedarf an Lehrveranstaltungen mit interkultureller Thematik beurteilen. Anhand von strukturierten Interviews wurde bei Polizeibeamtinnen, die ihre Ausbildung an der VFH absolviert haben und deren Studienzeit nicht länger als ein Jahr zurückliegt, exploriert: wie sie rückblickend das Lehrangebot und die Lehrkompetenz der VFH im Hinblick auf die inzwischen aufgetretenen interkulturellen Praxissituationen evaluieren; ob und welche Vorschläge es hinsichtlich neuer Schwerpunktsetzungen für die Ausbildung im Hinblick auf die Reflexion interkultureller Fragen und den Erwerb interkultureller Kompetenzen gibt; welche studienorganisatorischen Veränderungen – falls als notwendig empfunden- angebracht wären, um die potentielle Diskrepanz zwischen theoriegeleitetem Studium und den Anforderungen der Praxis zu kompensieren. b) Die zweite Exploration (Kapitel 5) untersuchte aktuelle interkulturelle Erfahrungen im Rahmen des Studiums an der VFH innerhalb und außerhalb der besuchten Lehrveranstaltungen. Als Forschungsmethode diente das strukturierte Interview. Die Befragten waren überwiegend Laufbahnbewerber, sowohl männliche und weibliche als auch mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund, und hatten daher bereits weit reichende Erfahrung in der polizeilichen Praxis. Folgende Fragestellungen wurden untersucht: von welchem Kenntnisstand und welchen Erfahrungen zur interkulturellen Problematik die Studierenden jeweils ausgehen; welche allgemeinen Erfahrungen interkultureller Art in Lehrveranstaltungen gemacht wurden, welchen Verlauf interkulturelle Auseinandersetzungen genommen haben und mit welchem Ergebnis und welche Unterstützung von wem erfahren bzw. gewünscht wurde; welches Themenangebot zur Frage interkultureller Spannungen für hilfreich gehalten respektive gewünscht wird. Im 3. Kapitel werden detailliert die methodischen Grundlagen der Exploration erläutert ebenso wie Zielsetzungen und methodische Grenzen der ausgewählten Methode.
