Based on the primary data derived from a household savings survey conducted by the authors and supplementary secondary data extracted from government official statistics, the results of statistical analysis show that the disparities in the distribution of household savings in Hong Kong was more serious than that in household income or expenditure, the major household saving motive was precautionary, the key determinant of household savings was salaries income, the life-cycle hypothesis of savings could be applied in Hong Kong, and savings were not adequate for the vast majority of households in Hong Kong.

Recently, a new Bayesian approach has been developed to explain some market anomalies. In this paper, we conduct a questionnaire survey to examine whether the theory holds empirically by studying the conservative and representative heuristics by Hong Kong small investors who adopt momentum and/or contrarian trading strategies. In addition, our study provides evidence for the small investors on their time horizon and risk tolerance when facing uncertainty in their investments. Our findings are useful to small investors in their investment decision making and useful to financial advisors in providing service to small investors.

Lam, et al. (2010, 2012) and Guo, et al. (2015) have developed a new Bayesian approach to explain some market anomalies. In this paper we conduct a survey to examine whether the theory developed in Lam, et al. (2010, 2012) and Guo, et al. (2015) holds in the empirically by studying the behavior of different types of Hong Kong small investors’ in their investment, especially during financial crisis.

Personality traits and risk preference behaviours have been the main subjects of behavioural finance. Our present study is to explore the relationship between the personality traits and investment risk preference. Questionnaire survey method is adopted to collect data and 600 valid samples are selected for the study. Also, the respondents come from Taiwan and Hong Kong, which allows us to test whether the differences in location of residence between these two regions can moderate the relationship. Our results show that investors personality traits have a significant relationship with their risk preferences. The evidence may help academics to integrate the role of personality traits into behavioural finance models, assist investors to recognise their risk preferences for making investment decisions, and facilitate finance professionals to design and recommend investment products for customers that match their risk preference characteristics with corresponding personality traits.
