Research in sustainability transitions increasingly acknowledges that the structural characteristics of socio-technical systems differ. However, little attention has been paid to the specific transition dynamics that can result from this structural variation. In response, this paper develops a framework for studying transition dynamics that takes the structural characteristics of socio-technical systems and their influence on agency into account. We introduce the concept contestation axis to highlight alternative potential interfaces between functional solutions in a socio-technical system. We argue that considerable agency and frictions between actors can play out at other axes than between established regimes and emerging niches. Our conceptual framework is applied to a case study in the waste sector. We explore how the growing influence of the circular economy triggers misalignment between multiple socio-technical configurations in the Danish waste sector. In the case, we zoom in on three actual frictions that have manifested along different contestation axes.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Advanced lipoprotein phenotyping is a better predictor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk than cholesterol concentration alone. Lipoprotein profiling in heart failure (HF) is incompletely characterized. We aimed to describe the lipoprotein profile in patients with chronic HF compared with a matched control population. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed from May 2006 to April 2014 and included ambulatory patients with chronic HF. Lipid concentrations and the size of main lipoprotein fractions (high-density lipoprotein [HDL], low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and very low-density lipoprotein) and the particle concentration of their 3 subfractions (large, medium and small) were assessed using 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy. 5. Can foundational economy save regions in crisis?

We perform, to our best knowledge, the first systematic mapping of the foundational economy (FE) at the sub-national level by looking at the FE employment in Swedish regions between 2007 and 2016. We show that the FE itself not only suffered less than traded activities from employment decline during the Great Recession of 2007–2009 but was also a domain of substantial job creation in the post-crisis recovery. At the same time, regions with higher dependence on foundational employment were hit harder during the crisis in terms of overall labour market performance. We demonstrate that it is specific compositions of foundational and traded activities in the regional employment mix that relate differently to regional employment growth in times of crisis and recovery. Jointly, these findings allow us to contribute to the literatures on the FE and regional resilience.

Over the years, the search for nutritional strategies that promote improved sports performance has increased. Among the available options, energy drinks appear as potential nutritional resources for this purpose, because they offer, in addition to caffeine, substances that act synergistically to improve performance, such as taurine, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, promoting improved performance for both amateur and professional athletes. The aim of the study was to verify the effects of ingesting energy drinks with (ED1) and without carbohydrates (ED0) containing 2 mg·kg-1 of caffeine, and a decaffeinated placebo (PL) on cardiovascular, metabolic and performance parameters during cycling. Twelve male cyclists (age = 24.4 ± 6.6 years old) volunteered to participate in this study. The protocol consisted of three experimental sessions of 60 min of continuous cycling (65-75% of VO2maxE) followed by time-trial 6 km. The subjects ingested ED1, ED0 or a placebo drink (PL) 40 min before beginning the exercise. The heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), plasma glucose and lactate concentrations, and the time taken to complete the 6 km time-trial were evaluated. The time taken to complete the time-trial was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the PL group than in the groups ED1 and ED0. This time significantly decreased after the ED1 consumption relative to that for the ED0 consumption. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic arterial pressure and in the plasma glucose and lactate concentrations were similar in all the considered groups. These results demonstrate that ED1 consumption appears to be more effective at maximizing performance during the last 6 km.

7. Impact of vein of Marshall ethanol infusion on left atrial function: an MRI study

Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Background Previous data suggested that left atrial (LA) function may be impaired by extensive atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. Ethanol infusion of Vein of Marshall (EI-VOM) as an adjunctive therapy to pulmonary vein isolation is an emerging therapeutic strategy that has shown to improve efficacy in persistent AF ablation procedures and mitral isthmus line. The impact of EI-VOM scar formation on LA function has not been addressed. Purpose To analyse the effect of EI-VOM on LA function, evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) strain parameters. Methods Twelve patients referred for de novo persistent AF or any repeat procedure were included. MRI was performed previous (baseline) and 3-month after AF ablation. MRI images were analyzed off-line with specialized post-processing software. LA volumes, LA strain parameters, including LA global longitudinal strain (GLS), LA reservoir (LASr), conduit (LAScd) and contractile (LASct) strain; LA ejection fraction (LAEF), LA passive emptying function (LAPEF) and LA active emptying function (LAAEF) were measured from SSFPs two-chamber cine sequences. Results Two patients were excluded due to absence of VOM and failed ethanolization. Ten patients (83%) underwent both MRI studies (64 [55-71]years; 80% men; de novo ablation of persistent AF (50%)). Six patients received additional mitral isthmus line and three posterior wall isolation. Mean baseline indexed LA volume was 62.7ml/m2 [47-73]. Baseline LA strain and EF parameters were: LA GLS 17.16±15.3, LASr 17.80±14.9%, LAScd -5.96±3.7%, LASct -10.35±9.5%; LAPEF 5.89±9.8, LAAEF 23.87±17.0 and LAEF 27.6±18.3%. At 3-months follow-up, no AF recurrences were detected. No differences were found regarding LA volume (57.6ml/m2 [42-64], p=0.671), strain parameters (LA GLS Δ0.62, p=0.903; LASr Δ0.02, p=0.991; LAScd Δ-0.84, p=0.563; LASct Δ0.54, p= 0.874) and LAEF parameters (LAPEF Δ4.82, p=0.592; LAAEF Δ3.03, p=0.903; and LAEF Δ7.0, p=0.213). Conclusions EI-VOM appears as a safe adjunctive strategy in AF ablation in terms of LA function. The present study did not show impairment in the main MRI strain parameters.

Artiklen diskuterer mulighederne for at adressere den geografiske skæve erhvervsudvikling, som har kendetegnet Danmark i en årrække, gennem mere helhedsorienterede og stedtilpassede tilgange i erhvervs- og innovationspolitikken. Der er behov for i højere grad at udvikle samspilsrelationer mellem erhvervssektorer og integrere by- og landområderi fælles strategiske erhvervsudviklingsindsatser. Artiklen beskriver først de seneste årtiers erhvervsudvikling med fokus på den geografiske dimension og diskuterer dernæst kritisk hovedlinjerne i Danmarks erhvervspolitik med en særlig opmærksomhed på den seneste reform af erhvervsfremmesystemet i 2018. Den diskuterer, hvorvidt begrebet Foundational Economy kan pege på alternative tilgange og konkluderer, at en mere holistisk erhvervspolitik med fordel kunne inkorporere begrebets lokale udviklingselement. Endelig diskuterer vi mulighederne for en mere inkluderende og holistisk erhvervspolitik med udgangspunkt i planerne om Bornholm som bæredygtig energi-ø.

Rationale: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) from mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) are a potential therapy for cardiac healing after myocardial infarction (MI). Nevertheless, neither their efficient administration nor therapeutic mechanisms are fully elucidated. Here, we evaluate the preclinical efficacy of a tissue engineering approach to locally deliver porcine cardiac adipose tissue MSC-EV (cATMSC-EV) in an acute MI pig model. Methods: After MI by permanent ligation of the coronary artery, pigs (n = 24) were randomized to Untreated or treated groups with a decellularised pericardial scaffold filled with peptide hydrogel and cATMSC-EV purified by size exclusion chromatography (EV-Treated group) or buffer (Control group), placed over the post-infarcted myocardium. Results: After 30 days, cardiac MRI showed an improved cardiac function in EV-Treated animals, with significantly higher right ventricle ejection fraction (+20.8% in EV-Treated; p = 0.026), and less ventricle dilatation, indicating less myocardial remodelling. Scar size was reduced, with less fibrosis in the distal myocardium (-42.6% Col I in EV-Treated vs Untreated; p = 0.03), a 2-fold increase in vascular density (EV-Treated; p = 0.019) and less CCL2 transcription in the infarct core. EV-treated animals had less macrophage infiltration in the infarct core (-31.7% of CD163(+)cells/field in EV-Treated; p = 0.026), but 5.8 times more expressing anti-inflammatory CD73 (p = 0.015). Systemically, locally delivered cATMSC-EV also triggered a systemic effect, doubling the circulating IL-1ra (p = 0.01), and reducing the PBMC rush 2d post-MI, the TNF alpha and GM-CSF levels at 30d post-MI, and modulating the CD73(+) and CCR2(+) monocyte populations, related to immunomodulation and fibrosis modulation. Conclusions: These results highlight the potential of cATMSC-EV in modulating hallmarks of ischemic injury for cardiac repair after MI.

Resumen Introduccion y objetivos Varios tipos de lipoproteinas, aparte de las lipoproteinas de baja densidad (LDL), tienen relacion causal con la enfermedad cardiovascular. Se analizo el perfil lipoproteico avanzado de individuos con metabolismo glucemico normal y alterado provenientes de una region mediterranea. Metodos Estudio transversal en 929 participantes (463 normoglucemicos, 250 prediabeticos y 216 con diabetes tipo 2) sin insuficiencia renal, enfermedad cardiovascular ni tratamiento hipolipemiante. Se analizaron los perfiles lipoproteicos convencional y avanzado (resonancia magnetica [RM] espectroscopica). Resultados En comparacion con los varones, las mujeres normoglucemicas mostraron menores concentraciones de trigliceridos y cLDL, menos particulas (P) de LDL y todas sus subclases y menos contenido en colesterol y trigliceridos, mayor concentracion de P de lipoproteinas de alta densidad (HDL) y de todas sus variables relacionadas (p ≤ 0,05 para todas las comparaciones). En comparacion con los normoglucemicos, los diabeticos mostraron una mayor concentracion de P-VLDL grandes y pequenas (p Conclusiones Las mujeres mostraron un mejor perfil lipoproteico avanzado que los varones. Se hallo relacion directa de los indices de adiposidad relacionados con resistencia insulinica con un perfil lipidico proaterogenico. La RM mostro alteraciones en particulas lipoproteicas distintas de las LDL en los diabeticos, a menudo asociadas con mayor riesgo cardiovascular. Nuestros hallazgos confirman la utilidad del analisis lipoproteico avanzado mediante RM espectroscopica para descubrir nuevas dianas terapeuticas con que prevenir eventos cardiovasculares en los individuos en riesgo.

13. Upscaling cultivation of Saccharina latissima on net or line systems; comparing biomass yields and nutrient extraction potentials

Production of sugar kelp, Saccharina latissima, has the potential of extracting nutrients and carbon from the seawater and returning it to land as a bioresource. The production thereby acts as an emission capture and utilization instrument contributing to mitigation of eutrophication and climate change. To achieve higher biomass yields improving the effects on climate and environment, and the economic feasibility of the production, cultivation techniques need to be optimized. In Denmark so far, S. latissima production yields have been lower than yields documented from Norway and the Faroe Islands. Use of alternative cultivation infrastructure designs with a higher line density per area, and better understanding the effects of annual and seasonal variations in abiotic parameters on growth, could lead the way towards a future higher yield of the S. latissima production. In this study, S. latissima was cultivated in a Danish commercial scale cultivation site for two consecutive seasons comparing the yields of different cultivation techniques: cultivation on nets and a multi-layer single line system, while also testing the possibility of coppicing the blades instead of applying a full harvest. Biomass yields of 5.0 - 6.8 kg FW m-1 cultivation line year-1, and 10.9 – 30.4 kg FW m-2 net structure were achieved. Biomass production, nutrient and carbon extraction potentials up to 91.3 t FW, 110 kg N, 13.1 kg P and 5.1 t C ha-1 were obtained using net cultivation systems and a 1.5 years growth period. Depth of cultivation had a significant effect on yield, but no effect on dry matter, C, N or P contents of S. latissima in a multi-layered line system. Biomass yields from the same system and site varied with a factor of four between years. The use of coppicing enabled multiple harvests of S. latissima, providing however biomass of reduced quality in the second year. This study demonstrates that the production yield of S. latissima can be increased by optimizing cultivation infrastructure, and indicates that net systems, or other cultivation systems with a high line density in the upper water column, can be a means to increase the areal yield of S. latissima.

14. Heat dissipation from photosynthesis contributes to maize thermoregulation under suboptimal temperature conditions

The extent to which plants thermoregulate to maintain relatively stable metabolic function in response to gradual and rapid temperature changes that jeopardize crop production is unclear. Maize thermoregulation was investigated based on leaf temperature (TL) measurements and its relationship with photochemistry and stomatal conductance (gs) under dry and wet soil scenarios. Seasonal climatology was simulated in a growth chamber according to Beijing’s climatology with extreme “hot days” based on historical maxima.Maize behaved as a limited homeotherm, an adaptive strategy to maintain photosynthesis around optimum temperatures (Topt). Plants on drier soil had lower thermoregulatory capacity, with reduced gs, photosynthesis and transpiration, which impacted final yields, despite acclimation with a higher Toptto sustained stress. On hot days thermoregulation was affected by heat stress and water availability, suggesting that strong and frequent heatwaves will reduce crop activity although increased temperatures could bring photosynthesis closer to Toptin the region.We propose a novel mechanism to explain thermoregulation from the contribution of heat dissipation via non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) to TL, supporting our hypothesis that NPQ acts as a negative feedback mechanism from photosynthesis by increasing TLin suboptimal conditions. These results could help to design adaptation strategies based on deficit irrigation.HighlightMaize was able to maintain leaf temperatures in narrower ranges than air temperatures by dissipating sunlight not used in photosynthesis as heat energy with a key role of transpiration cooling to sustain optimum photosynthesis temperature.

- Abstract
The hypothesis that seaweed farming contributes to carbon burial below the farms was tested by quantifying burial rates in 20 seaweed farms distributed globally, ranging from 2 to 300 years in operation and from 1 ha to 15,000 ha in size. This involved combining analyses of organic carbon density with sediment accumulation rate in sediments below seaweed farms relative to reference sediments beyond the farm and/or prior to the farm operation. One in every four farms sampled was set over environments that export, rather than retain materials. For the farms that were placed over depositional environments, where sediment accumulation could be quantified, the thickness of sediment layers and stocks of carbon accumulated below the farms increased with farm age, reaching 140 ton C ha-1for the oldest farm, and tended to exceed those in reference sediments beyond the farm and/or prior to the operation of the farms. Organic carbon burial rates in the farm sediments averaged (± SE) 1.87 ± 0.73 ton CO2equivalent (CO2-eq) ha-1year-1(median 0.83, range 0.10 – 8.99 ton CO2-eqha-1year-1), twice the average (± SE) burial rate in reference sediments (0.90 ± 0.27, median 0.64, range 0.10-3.00 ton CO2-eqha-1year-1), so that the excess organic carbon burial attributable to the seaweed farms averaged 1.06 ± 0.74 ton CO2-eqha-1year-1(median 0.09, range −0.13-8.10 ton CO2-eqha-1year-1). This first direct quantification of carbon burial in sediments below seaweed farms confirms that, when placed over depositional environments, seaweed farming tend to sequester carbon in the underlying sediments, but do so at widely variable rates, increasing with farm yield.

19. Photocatalytic Properties of TiO2 for the Degradation of O3: Examined by Environmental Parameters

Background: This paper describes how environmentally relevant parameters affect titanium dioxide's photocatalytic properties (TiO2) to decompose ozone (O3). Methods: Thus, experiments have been carried out in a box chamber with TiO2 coated roofing membrane samples to determine the significance of light intensity, temperature, initial O3 concentration, and relative humidity. Furthermore, an outdoor experiment was conducted where the roofing membrane was subjected to natural sunlight. Results: The results show a significant photocatalytic effect of TiO2. The half-life of the O3 decay curve is 5.8 min in near-ambient UV-light exposure compared with 7.1 min in dark conditions. Experiments conducted at higher light intensity show a more extensive degradation of O3, where the value of the reactive uptake coefficient increases from 0.044 to 0.051. Also, the measurements carried out under natural sunlight show a photocatalytic effect where the uptake coefficient value is 0.046. A larger photocatalytic effect is detected for the experiments conducted at 283 K and 303 K temperatures compared with experiments under standard conditions. Conclusion: Experiments carried out with a very high initial concentration of O3 show that 28.1 μg of O3 is decomposed in ambient conditions, where 2.3 μg is destroyed. This demonstrates that light intensity, temperature, ozone concentration, and relative humidity significantly impact TiO2's degradation of O3.

LAT1 and 4F2hc form a heterodimeric membrane protein complex, which functions as one of the best characterized amino acid transporters. Since LAT1-4F2hc is required for the efficient uptake of essential amino acids and hormones, it promotes cellular growth, in part, by stimulating mTORC1 (mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1) signalling and by repressing the integrated stress response (ISR). Gain or loss of LAT1-4F2hc function is associated with cancer, diabetes, and immunological and neurological diseases. Hence, LAT1-4F2hc represents an attractive drug target for disease treatment. Specific targeting of LAT1-4F2hc will be facilitated by the increasingly detailed understanding of its molecular architecture, which provides important concepts for its function and regulation. Here, we summarize (i) structural insights that help to explain how LAT1 and 4F2hc assemble to transport amino acids across membranes, (ii) the role of LAT1-4F2hc in key metabolic signalling pathways, and (iii) how derailing these processes could contribute to diseases.

Background Reference left and right ventricular (LV/RV) volumes normalized to age and gender have been published. However, the relative dilation of the LV compared to the RV in patients with heart failure (HF) symptoms and its prognostic association have not been evaluated. Purpose The present study investigated the relative dilation of the LV compared to the RV among patients with HF and preserved LV ejection fraction (HFpEF). We explored the association between LV/RV ratio (defined as the ratio between LV end-diastolic volume index [LVEDVi] and RV end-diastolic volume index [RVEDVi]) and outcomes. Methods Clinical and imaging data from consecutive ambulatory patients diagnosed with HFpEF between April 2011 and November 2021, and undergoing a cardiac magnetic resonance examination were retrieved. The endpoints were 1) all-cause death or first HF hospitalization, and 2) cardiovascular death or first HF hospitalization, 3) repeated HF hospitalizations. Results A total of 159 patients (median age 58 years [interquartile range 49–69], 64% men) were included. Median LVEF was 60% (54–70%), and the LV/RV ratio was 1.21 (1.07–1.40). Over a 3.5-year follow-up (1.5–5.0), all-cause death or first HF hospitalization occurred in 23 patients (15%) and cardiovascular death or first HF hospitalization in 22 (14%). Spline curve analysis showed a bimodal relationship between LV/RV and both outcomes, with a steep increase in risk Conclusions Among patients with HFpEF, an RVEDVi larger than the LVEDVi, or an LVEDVi ≥40% larger than the RVEDVi were significantly associated with worse outcomes. Background The PERISCOPE is a first-in-human, phase I, double blind, one centre clinical trial to test the safety of the PeriCord, an advanced therapy medicinal product (PEI18–140), for the treatment of patients with infarcted myocardial tissue. The PeriCord is a GMP-complying allogeneic engineered tissue graft consisting on a decellularised pericardial matrix colonised with umbilical cord Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stromal cells. The PeriCord implantation has shown to promote damaged tissue revascularisation, reduce infarct size, adverse remodelling and fibrosis, and ultimately improve cardiac function preclinically. Purpose To assess the safety and monitor the monocyte and cytokine response after PeriCord implantation in patients with infarcted myocardial tissue. Methods The PERISCOPE clinical trial has been approved by AEMPS and the Local Ethics Committee of our institution (Eudra-CT 2018–001964–49). Twelve patients with transmural myocardial infarction (>50% by MRI) who were candidates for surgical revascularisation were included: two roll-in and 10 randomised into a Control group (n=5; CABG) or Treatment group (n=5; n=7 in total; CABG and PeriCord implantation over the transmural myocardial scar). In conjunction with clinical follow-up, whole blood was sampled at baseline and 3-, 6-, and 9-days post-surgery for monocyte populations analysis by flow cytometry and plasma cytokine and monocyte chemoattractant chemokine levels by multiplex ELISA. Results The target patient enrolment has been met and no adverse effects related to PeriCord implantation were observed so far. Recruitment of CCR2+ activated monocytes in peripheral blood peaked on day 3 post-surgery in both groups (increase in the %CCR2+ monocytes of 6.1±5.7% in Control, p=0.38; and 6.5±1.8% in PeriCord Treated patients, p=0.0004), concomitant with a surge in the monocyte chemoattractant CCL2 plasma levels. At the same time, there was a decrease in the number of “non-classical” monocytes regardless of treatment (decrease in CD14-/CD16+ monocytes of 16.7±11.1% in Control, p Conclusions Implantation of the PeriCord in myocardial infarction patients did not promote adverse reactions and modulated circulating monocyte subsets that have been associated with post-infarction myocardial tissue healing (CCR2 and CX3CR1). Background Angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) and sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) lead to reduced cardiovascular death and hospitalization rates for heart failure, but mechanisms of action remain unclear. Purpose To evaluate the effect of ARNI and SLGT2i on cardiac function, systemic inflammation and scar remodeling in a porcine model of acute myocardial infarction (MI). Methods Thirty-three pigs (18 female, 15 male) with non-revascularized MI were randomized to receive treatment with beta-blocker (BB) only (BB group, n=8), empagliflozin + BB (SGLT2i group, n=8), sacubitril/valsartan + BB (ARNI group, n=9) or empagliflozin + sacubitril/valsartan + BB (SGLT2i + ARNI group, n=8) for 30 days post-MI. Cardiac function parameters were studied at 2- and 30-days post-MI by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. The systemic immune response was analysed at baseline, 2-, 15- and 30-days post-MI to estimate 1) the absolute number of neutrophils and lymphocytes by FSC-A/SSC-A, 2) the circulating monocytes (CD172a+) and their phenotype according to CD73+, and CCR2+ expression. Animals were euthanized at 30 days, interstitial collagen and vascular density of the scar were quantified. Results Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and stoke volume (LVSV) improved in SGLT2i + ARNI group (P=0.02, P=0.002, respectively, 2 vs 30 days post-MI). Right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) and stroke volume (RVSV) improved in ARNI treatment arm (P=0.03; P=0.02, respectively, 2 vs 30 days post-MI). Significant increase in LV mass was only observed in BB group (P=0.02; 2 vs 30 days post-MI). SGLT2i and ARNI treatment prevented the acute increase in circulating leukocytes 2 days post-MI (P=0.0095; P=0.0091, respectively). Moreover, SGLT2i reduced the CCR2+ activated monocytes count at 15 days post-infarction (P=0.01). In contrast, the combined treatment increased the number of circulating monocytes (CD172a+) at 30 days (P=0.008). Reduced collagen I (P=0.04), and Col I/Col III ratio (P=0.02) was observed in ARNI group, and higher collagen III content (P=0.02) in SGLT2i group. Vascular density was significantly increased in SGLT2i + ARNI group (P=0.03). Conclusions SGLT2i modulates systemic inflammatory state. ARNI reduces myocardial fibrosis and improves right ventricular function. Combined treatment improves vascular density and left cardiac function in a post-MI porcine model. Background Mechanistic pathways of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) benefits in heart failure (HF) remain unclear. Purpose To investigate the effects of SGLT2i and simultaneous diuretic down-titration on pulmonary congestion assessed by lung ultrasound (LUS) and by HF biomarkers. Methods Prospective observational study in outpatients with HF and type 2 diabetes assigned to a SGLT2i. LUS was performed at baseline (just before starting SGLT2i), at 15 days and at 3-months of follow-up. Eight thoracic areas were examined. Diuretic regime was reduced at baseline, when LUS and clinical assessment allowed. The main outcome was short-time change in B-lines sum. Secondary endpoints evaluated N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP), cancer antigen 125 (CA125) and interleukin-1 receptor-like 1 (ST2) Results 88 patients were included (age, 66.8±9.9 years; 93.2% male; 77.3% in NYHA II functional class; 75% treated with loop diuretics). The median of lines B was 2 (RIQ 1–4), 2 (RIQ 1–4) and 2 (RIQ 0–4) at the initial visit, 15 days and 3 months, respectively (initial vs. 3 months, p=0.21) (Table 1). The number of patients treated with loop diuretics decreased from 66 to 33 (p Conclusions The introduction of SGLT2i allowed a significant reduction of diuretics in chronic HF patients and diabetes, without evidence of worsening lung congestion assessed neither by LUS nor by HF biomarkers. Background Accurate diagnosis of the underlying cause of myocardial infarction (MI) without obstructive coronary artery disease (MINOCA) is crucial. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) plays an important role in the work up of patients with MINOCA. However, the timing of performance of CMR may impact on the diagnosis yield. Purpose To establish the diagnostic yield of CMR in a large cohort of patients admitted with MINOCA based on the timing of referral to CMR. Methods All patients referred to CMR from January 2009 to February 2022 with MINOCA were included. Studies were performed on a 1.5 T or 3T scanners. SSFP cines, T2-weighted black-blood fat-sat images and DE-segmented GE IR images 10–15 minutes after iv gadolinium-DTPA administration (0.15mmol/kg) were performed in 3 long-axis and 11–15 parallel short-axis views. All images were reviewed and analyzed off-line with specialized post-processing software. Results A total of 203 patients (median age 49 years, 60% men) with MINOCA diagnosis were included. Main ECG alterations were ST-segment elevation (STE) (57%) and T wave inversion (19%). Mean peak high sensitivity (HS)-TnI levels were 3706pg/mL. Median time to CMR was 7 days (5–9 days). Mean LVEF was 58% (range 18–83%) and mean LVEDVi 77 mL/m2 (range 35–210 mL/m2). Regional wall abnormalities were present in 123 patients (62%). High signal in T2w images was detected in 153 cases (75%) and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in 143cases (71%). Final CMR diagnosis resulted in myocarditis in 46%, MI in 20%, Takotsubo in 18%, and other cardiomyopathies in 6.4%. CMR was normal in 15 patients and not conclusive in 1. When CMR was performed within 7 days of admission (median: 5 days (4–6 days); n: 116 patients), the distribution of diagnoses was myocarditis in 53%, MI in 20%, Takotsubo in 16%, other cardiomyopathies in 6% and normal CMR in 4%. Whereas, if CMR was performed after 7 days (median: 10 days (8–12 days); n: 87 patients), the diagnoses were as flows: myocarditis in 36%, MI in 22%, Takotsubo 20%, cardiomyopathies in 7%, not conclusive in 1% and normal CMR in 13% (Table 1). Conclusions CMR led to the underlying diagnosis of MINOCA in 92% of patients. Myocarditis was the most frequent diagnosis. The final diagnosis of myocarditis was more frequent when CMR was performed within 7 days with a lesser percentage of normal CMR. Funding Acknowledgement Type of funding sources: None.

Background Patients with heart failure (HF) and reduced or mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF/HFmrEF) display variable grades of left ventricular (LV) dilation. LV end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) and volume (LVEDV) may not be concomitantly increased. The respective prognostic implications of LV dilation have not been explored. Purpose To assess the prognostic implications of LVEDD and LVEDV index (LVEDVi) in HFrEF/HFmrEF. Methods Data from consecutive HF outpatients undergoing cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and with LV ejection fraction Results A total of 564 patients (79% men, median age 65 years [56–73], ischaemic aetiology in 32%) were included. HFrEF was present in 85% of patients, and HFmrEF in 15%. Median values for LVEDD and LVEDVi were 63 mm (58–69) and 124 mL/m2 (104–149) respectively. LVEDD was significantly correlated with LVEDVi (r=0.804, p58 mm was not (p=0.278). There was a trend toward an independent association between LV dilation based on LVEDVi and outcome adjusting for HFrEF/HFmrEF status and ischaemic aetiology (hazard ratio 2.10, 95% confidence interval 1.00–4.41, p=0.050). An independent association was not found for LV dilation based on LVEDD. An LVEDD >66 mm was associated with increased risk of CV death or HF hospitalization on spline curve analysis (Figure 11). All patients with an LVEDD >66 mm had also LV dilation based on LVEDVi. Conclusions In patients with HFrEF and HFmrEF, LV dilation based on LVEDVi does not always coincide with a dilated LVEDD. The cut-off value of LVEDD associated with an excess of the combined endpoint is much larger than the value used in clinical practice. However, in patients with dilated LV based on LVEDVi, LVEDD does not add to the risk stratification. Funding Acknowledgement Type of funding sources: None.

Este artigo apresenta a caracterização da natureza e da frequência dos erros gráficos identificados em 271 textos escritos por 150 alunos de 6º e 9º anos de Ensino Fundamental (EF) e de 3ª série de Ensino Médio (EM) de duas públicas de um município do sudoeste do Paraná. Do total de textos, 117 foram produzidos por 65 alunos que estudam na escola denominada “escola 1” e os outros 154 textos foram produzidos por 85 estudantes da “escola 2”. A geração de dados foi realizada com o auxílio das professoras regentes das turmas pesquisadas, as quais aplicaram, em dias diferentes, duas propostas de produção de textos. Os erros ortográficos identificados em textos de alunos de 6º e 9º anos de Ensino Fundamental e de 3ª série de Ensino Médio foram classificados quanto à sua natureza e frequência nos grupos: 1. erros decorrentes das assimetrias encontradas entre fonemas e grafemas e 2. erros com motivação marcadamente fonológica e/ou fonética (MIRANDA, 2017). Essa caracterização faz parte de nossa pesquisa de doutorado que teve o objetivo de refletir sobre o ensino das regularidades do sistema ortográfico nos anos finais do Ensino Fundamental (EF) e do Ensino Médio (EM). O erro ortográfico é um dado que fornece informações sobre o nível de conhecimento dos estudantes quanto ao domínio da ortografia. A partir do diagnóstico dos saberes dos estudantes, identificamos as principais dificuldades ortográficas e o tipo de erro mais frequente para a proposição de atividades de ensino reflexivo das regularidades ortográficas. Os erros mais frequentes, dentre todas as categorias, foram os de representação da fricativa alveolar surda /s/.

Systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP) and right heart adaptation in relation to pre-existing preload are often disregarded. To determine volume-related changes in the pulmonary-right ventricle (RV) unit and the preload dependence of its components, we analysed pulmonary haemodynamics and right ventricular performance, taking advantage of the plasma volume removal associated to haemodialysis (HD). Fifty-three stable patients on chronic HD with LVEF > 50% and without heart failure were recruited (mean age 63.0 ± 12.4 years; 31.2% women; hypertension in 89% and diabetes in 53%) and evaluated just before and after HD (mean ultrafiltration volume 2.4 ± 0.7 l). SPAP from both times were available in 39 patients. After HD, SPAP decreased (42.2 ± 12.6 to 33.7 ± 11.6 mmHg, p 40 mmHg) (OR 1.29 (1.07–1.56), p = 0.006). Rapid volemic changes may affect FTR grading, RV size and contractility, with RV longitudinal strain being less variable than conventional parameters. SPAP decreases after HD, and this reduction is related to age and greater diminution of the E/eʹ ratio.

Ecosystems integrity and services are threatened by anthropogenic global changes. Mitigating and adapting to these changes require knowledge of ecosystem functioning in the expected novel environments, informed in large part through experimentation and modelling. This paper describes 13 advanced controlled environment facilities for experimental ecosystem studies, herein termed ecotrons, open to the international community. Ecotrons enable simulation of a wide range of natural environmental conditions in replicated and independent experimental units while measuring various ecosystem processes. This capacity to realistically control ecosystem environments is used to emulate a variety of climatic scenarios and soil conditions, in natural sunlight or through broad‐spectrum lighting. The use of large ecosystem samples, intact or reconstructed, minimizes border effects and increases biological and physical complexity. Measurements of concentrations of greenhouse trace gases as well as their net exchange between the ecosystem and the atmosphere are performed in most ecotrons, often quasi continuously. The flow of matter is often tracked with the use of stable isotope tracers of carbon and other elements. Equipment is available for measurements of soil water status as well as root and canopy growth. The experiments ran so far emphasize the diversity of the hosted research. Half of them concern global changes, often with a manipulation of more than one driver. About a quarter deal with the impact of biodiversity loss on ecosystem functioning and one quarter with ecosystem or plant physiology. We discuss how the methodology for environmental simulation and process measurements, especially in soil, can be improved and stress the need to establish stronger links with modelling in future projects. These developments will enable further improvements in mechanistic understanding and predictive capacity of ecotron research which will play, in complementarity with field experimentation and monitoring, a crucial role in exploring the ecosystem consequences of environmental changes., Experimentation and modelling are necessary to predict ecosystem functioning under future environments and to develop mitigating and adapting strategies. This paper describes 13 advanced controlled environment facilities, called ecotrons, open to the international community. An ecotron comprises a set of replicated enclosures designed to host ecosystems samples and enable realistic simulations of above‐ and belowground environmental conditions, while simultaneously and automatically measuring ecosystem processes. The characteristics of these infrastructures are given as well as examples of collaborative projects hosted so far.

This paper focuses on path development processes after a sudden path exhaustion. We analyse the decline, the closure and the attempts at the re-orientation of a forestry-based industry agglomeration in Southern Norway, located around the municipality of Hønefoss. In particular, this paper focuses on the Treklyngen holding company in Hønefoss. This paper explores how policy may be influenced by and built upon regional capabilities to support new path development in the aftermath of path exhaustion. It also shows how natural resources and institutional endowments could contribute to path development, under such difficult circumstances in a peripheral region.

When cultivating the kelp Saccharina latissima, knowledge on the availability of seeding material for the production is essential. Applying a spore seeding approach requires spores from the reproductive organs of the fertile sporophytes (sori). As sori are generally not present during the time of seeding in late summer, the production of spores (sporogenesis) can be artificially induced by removing the meristematic part of the sporophyte and keeping the sporophyte under short day, temperate, and nutrient-replete conditions. Only limited information is available on the effect of light intensities including darkness on the sporogenesis of S. latissima. This study examined the natural pattern of sporogenesis in S. latissima from Middelfart, Denmark, and the effect of four different light regimes (0, 20, 60, or 120 μmol photons m−2 s−1) on the artificial induction of sporogenesis in S. latissima. Natural reproductivity and availability of spores in Denmark peaked in early winter, with 86% of the population being reproductive in November. Reproductive material was available from October until late spring, but with a variable spore release from 11 × 103 to 1.2 × 106 spores cm−2 sori. The artificial induction of sporogenesis was optimal in darkness with > 90% of sporophytes developing sori after 49 days, with an average spore release density of 1.15 ± 0.38 × 106 spores cm−2 sori. The results confirmed that S. latissima in Denmark follows the general pattern of reproduction of S. latissima in North Atlantic regions and demonstrated for the first time that sporogenesis in S. latissima can be efficiently induced in darkness.

Predictive factors of significant functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR) are not completely understood. We investigated sex-related differences in predictors of FTR progression.Clinical and echocardiographic variables were recorded in a prospective single-centre observational cohort of 251 consecutive stable patients with FTR. Multivariable logistic regression analyses stratified by sex were performed to identify predictors of significant FTR.The mean age of the whole cohort was 72.2±11.4 years, and 133 (53%) patients were women. Females tended to have a higher prevalence of significant FTR (22.6% vs 13.6%; p=0.066). Women were also older than men (mean age 74.4 vs 69.6 years; p0.001), with more frequent history of arterial hypertension, worse New York Heart Association functional class, higher E/e' quotient, and higher left ventricular ejection fraction. The independent predictors of significant FTR in women were atrial fibrillation (AF) (odds ratio [OR] 10.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.9-40.7; p0.001), indexed tricuspid diameter annulus (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.04-1.47; p=0.017), and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) (OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.04-1.15; p=0.001). The independent predictors of outcome in men were indexed tricuspid tenting height (OR 2.71, 95% CI 1.20-6.11; p=0.016), indexed tricuspid diameter annulus (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.26-3.09; p=0.003), and PASP (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.01-1.16; p=0.021).The presence of AF and longer indexed tenting height convey a greater risk of significant FTR in females and males, respectively. These findings suggest the existence of different physiopathological mechanisms involved in the progression of FTR in both sexes.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) in urban air close to ground have significant health implications. Restrictions in traffic, mandatory use of catalytic converters on vehicles, and novel photocatalytic coatings on surfaces contribute to reducing the level of NOx in cities. The aim of this study is to establish environmental profiles of NOx removal by a Three-Way Catalyst (TWC) car converter and by a photocatalytic surface coating (for asphalt and concrete pavements) for fostering technological development in reducing the levels of NOx in urban air. We assessed the environmental performance for the removal of 1 kg NOx by the two technologies with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA; EF.3 impact assessment method). In order to do so, we established Life-Cycle-Inventory (LCI) data representing production, operation and end-of-life of the two technologies based on data from literature and industry. The production of photocatalytic surface coatings, used on concrete and asphalt, has environmental loads two orders of magnitude lower than the environmental benefits of NOx reduction expressed as a reduction in Photochemical Ozone Formation (POF), Acidification (A), and Terrestrial Eutrophication (TE). The vehicle catalytic converter shows similar results except that the use of rare earth elements in the production constitutes a significant load to Freshwater Ecotoxicity (FET) and that additional use of fuel during operation induces a modest Climate Change (CC) impact. For both technologies, the environmental benefits of reducing NOx far exceed any adverse environmental aspects of the production of the technologies.

ObjectiveTo assess the arrhythmic safety profile of the adipose graft transposition procedure (AGTP) and its electrophysiological effects on post-myocardial infarction (MI) scar.BackgroundMyocardial repair is a promising treatment for patients with MI. The AGTP is a cardiac reparative therapy that reduces infarct size and improves cardiac function. The impact of AGTP on arrhythmogenesis has not been addressed.MethodsMI was induced in 20 swine. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (ce-MRI), electrophysiological study (EPS), and left-ventricular endocardial high-density mapping were performed 15 days post-MI. Animals were randomized 1:1 to AGTP or sham-surgery group and monitored with ECG-Holter. Repeat EPS, endocardial mapping, and ce-MRI were performed 30 days post-intervention. Myocardial SERCA2, Connexin-43 (Cx43), Ryanodine receptor-2 (RyR2), and cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) gene and protein expression were evaluated.ResultsThe AGTP group showed a significant reduction of the total infarct scar, border zone and dense scar mass by ce-MRI (p = 0.04), and a decreased total scar and border zone area in bipolar voltage mapping (p < 0.001). AGTP treatment significantly reduced the area of very-slow conduction velocity (p = 0.002), the number of deceleration zones (p = 0.029), and the area of fractionated electrograms (p = 0.005). No differences were detected in number of induced or spontaneous ventricular arrhythmias at EPS and Holter-monitoring. SERCA2, Cx43, and RyR2 gene expression were decreased in the infarct core of AGTP-treated animals (p = 0.021, p = 0.018, p = 0.051, respectively).ConclusionAGTP is a safe reparative therapy in terms of arrhythmic risk and provides additional protective effect against adverse electrophysiological remodeling in ischemic heart disease.

40. The Air Quality Lens: Ambiguity as Opportunity to Reactivate Environmental Data

The use of low-cost sensors to collect environmental data can enable citizens to express environmental concerns and foster community building and activism. However, when made public, citizen data is often detached from the subjective experiences integral to citizen sensing. Our work with youngsters from diverse backgrounds explores how existing environmental datasets can be reactivated to engage new stakeholders and discussions. We present a research through design project with air quality data and draw attention to the role of ambiguity in our design process. We synthesize our reflections by discussing three design aspects that can make sense of ambiguity and encourage critical engagements with environmental data. The advent of transcatheter aortic valve implantation has revolutionized the treatment of calcific aortic valve stenosis. Elderly patients who were previously considered inoperable have currently an efficacious and safe therapy that provides better survival. In addition, current practice guidelines tend to recommend earlier intervention to avoid the irreversible consequences of long-lasting pressure overload caused by the stenotic aortic valve. Appropriate timing of the intervention relies significantly on imaging techniques that provide information on the severity of the aortic stenosis as well as on the hemodynamic consequences and cardiac remodeling. While left ventricular ejection fraction remains one of the main functional parameters for risk stratification in patients with severe aortic stenosis, advances in imaging techniques have provided new structural and functional parameters that allow the identification of patients who will benefit from intervention before the occurrence of symptoms or irreversible cardiac damage. Furthermore, ongoing research aiming to identify the medical therapies that can effectively halt the progression of aortic stenosis relies heavily on imaging endpoints, and new imaging techniques that characterize the metabolic activity of calcific aortic stenosis have been proposed to monitor the effects of these therapies. The present review provides an up-to-date overview of the imaging advances that characterizes the pathophysiology and that have changed the management paradigm of aortic stenosis.

Many unanswered questions remain regarding the role of SARS-CoV-2 serological assays in this unfolding COVID-19 pandemic. These include their utility for the diagnosis of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, past infection or exposure, correlation with immunity and the effective duration of immunity. This study examined the performance of three laboratory based serological assays, EUROIMMUN Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgA/IgG, MAGLUMI 2000 Plus 2019-nCov IgM/IgG and EDI Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) IgM/IgG immunoassays. We evaluated 138 samples from a reference non-infected population and 71 samples from a cohort of 37 patients with SARS-CoV-2 confirmed positive by RT-PCR. The samples were collected at various intervals of 0–45 days posts symptoms onset (PSO). Specificity and sensitivity of these assays was 60.9%/71.4% (IgA) and 94.2%/63.3% (IgG) for EUROIMMUN; 98.5%/18.4% (IgM) and 97.8%/53.1% (IgG) for MAGLUMI; and 94.9%/22.5% (IgM) and 93.5%/57.1% (IgG) for EDI, respectively. When samples collected ≥14 days PSO were considered, the sensitivities were 100.0 and 100.0%; 31.0 and 82.8%; 34.5 and 57.1%, respectively. Using estimated population prevalence of 0.1, 1, and 10%, the positive predictive value of all assays remained low. The EUROIMMUN Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgA lacked specificity for acute diagnosis and all IgM assays offered poor diagnostic utility. Seroconversion can be delayed although all patients had seroconverted at 28 days in our cohort with the EUROIMMUN Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG. The foundational economy perspective suggests that industries, which provide services essential to all citizens’ well-being and participation in everyday life, should be placed centrally in economic development policy. This article studies the extent to which local governments put emphasis on foundational industries in their strategies for development. Moreover, drivers behind priority-setting are examined. Based on an analysis of all 98 Danish municipalities’ planning strategies and semi-structured interviews with relevant actors from two rural municipalities, we find that foundational industries are to a great extent emphasised, even if they are not characterised as the foundation for economic development. Rather, foundational industries are prioritised in the absence of other options or when municipalities are not compelled to put local job creation as a crucial focus to attract and maintain inhabitants.

Resumen Introduccion y objetivos En endocarditis infecciosa (EI), la decision quirurgica es dificil. Un alto porcentaje de pacientes con indicacion quirurgica no son intervenidos. El objetivo fue evaluar el pronostico a corto y largo plazo de los pacientes con indicacion quirurgica, comparando los que se sometieron a cirugia con los que no lo hicieron. Metodos Se incluyeron 271 pacientes con EI izquierda e indicacion quirurgica tratados en el centro desde 2003 a 2018. Ochenta y tres pacientes (31%) no fueron finalmente operados. El objetivo primario fue la mortalidad a 60 dias y el secundario desde el dia 61 a los 3 anos de seguimiento. Se realizo regresion de Cox multivariable y emparejamiento por puntuacion de propension. Resultados A los 60 dias, 40 (21,3%) pacientes operados y 53 (63,9%) pacientes no intervenidos fallecieron (p Conclusiones Dos tercios de los pacientes con indicacion quirurgica no intervenidos fallecieron antes de 60 dias. Entre los supervivientes, la mortalidad a largo plazo depende mas de factores relacionados con comorbilidad previa que del tratamiento recibido durante el ingreso.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES In infective endocarditis (IE), decisions on surgical interventions are challenging and a high percentage of patients with surgical indication do not undergo these procedures. This study aimed to evaluate the short- and long-term prognosis of patients with surgical indication, comparing those who underwent surgery with those who did not. METHODS We included 271 patients with left-sided IE treated at our institution from 2003 to 2018 and with an indication for surgery. There were 83 (31%) surgery-indicated not undergoing surgery patients with left-sided infective endocarditis (SINUS-LSIE). The primary outcome was all-cause death by day 60 and the secondary outcome was all-cause death from day 61 to 3 years of follow-up. Multivariable Cox regression and propensity score matching were used for the analysis. The endosomal sorting complexes required for transport (ESCRT) mediate evolutionarily conserved membrane remodeling processes. Here, we used budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to explore how the ESCRT machinery contributes to plasma membrane (PM) homeostasis. We found that in response to reduced membrane tension and inhibition of TOR complex 2 (TORC2), ESCRT-III/Vps4 assemblies form at the PM and help maintain membrane integrity. In turn, the growth of ESCRT mutants strongly depended on TORC2-mediated homeostatic regulation of sphingolipid (SL) metabolism. This was caused by calcineurin-dependent dephosphorylation of Orm2, a repressor of SL biosynthesis. Calcineurin activity impaired Orm2 export from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and thereby hampered its subsequent endosome and Golgi-associated degradation (EGAD). The ensuing accumulation of Orm2 at the ER in ESCRT mutants necessitated TORC2 signaling through its downstream kinase Ypk1, which repressed Orm2 and prevented a detrimental imbalance of SL metabolism. Our findings reveal compensatory cross-talk between the ESCRT machinery, calcineurin/TORC2 signaling, and the EGAD pathway important for the regulation of SL biosynthesis and the maintenance of PM homeostasis.

Aims Systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), and TAPSE/SPAP ratio trajectories are not fully characterized in chronic heart failure (HF). We assessed very long-term longitudinal SPAP, TAPSE and TAPSE/SPAP trajectories in HF patients, and their dynamic changes in outcomes. Methods and results Prospective, consecutive, observational registry of real-life HF patients, performing echocardiography studies at baseline and according to a prospectively structured schedule after 1 year, and then every 2 years, up to 15 years. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) was defined as SPAP ≥40 mmHg; right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) was defined at TAPSE ≤16 mm; and TAPSE/SPAP ratio was dichotomized at 0.36 mm/mmHg. The clinical endpoints were all-cause death, the composite endpoint of mortality or HF hospitalization and the number of recurrent HF hospitalizations. The study cohort included 1557 patients. Long-term SPAP trajectory Loess curves were U-shaped with a nadir at 7 years. TAPSE Loess curves showed a marked rise during the first year, with stabilization thereafter. TAPSE/SPAP ratio Loess splines were similar to the later with a smooth decline towards the end. Patients who died had higher SPAP, lower TAPSE and lower TAPSE/SPAP ratio in the preceding period than survivors. Baseline PH and/or RVD were independently associated with mortality and HF-related hospitalizations, and the persistence of one or both entities at 1 year conferred a worse long-term prognosis. Conclusions Long-term trajectories for SPAP, TAPSE and TAPSE/SPAP ratio are reported in patients with chronic HF. An increasing SPAP and declining TAPSE and TAPSE/SPAP ratio in the preceding period is associated with higher mortality.

The literature on the catching up of latecomer countries has pointed at windows of opportunity as a precondition for catching up. Previous research has however failed to illuminate the determining factors affecting the number of firms benefitting from windows of opportunity. The current article addresses this gap by combining insights on the nature of knowledge spillovers with sectoral characteristics. This perspective is applied empirically by analyzing the number of firms benefitting from a ‘green’ window of opportunity in the Chinese biomass power plant industry, specifically related to changes in the institutional framework conditions in the form of a feed-in tariff and specified targets for renewable energy. The article finds that while a single Chinese firm constituted the initial phase of the catch-up cycle, domestic knowledge spillovers allowed a larger number of Chinese firms to benefit from the window of opportunity in the later stage of the catch-up cycle. The article points at the importance of combining sectoral characteristics with the degree of domestic knowledge spillovers as key determinants for the number of firms profiting from windows of opportunity.

Eisosomes are membrane furrows at the cell surface of yeast that have been shown to function in two seemingly distinct pathways, membrane stress response and regulation of nutrient transporters. We found that many stress conditions affect both of these pathways by changing plasma membrane tension and thus the morphology and composition of eisosomes. For example, alkaline stress causes swelling of the cell and an endocytic response, which together increase membrane tension, thereby flattening the eisosomes. The flattened eisosomes affect membrane stress pathways and release nutrient transporters, which aids in their down-regulation. In contrast, glucose starvation or hyperosmotic shock causes cell shrinking, which results in membrane slack and the deepening of eisosomes. Deepened eisosomes are able to trap nutrient transporters and protect them from rapid endocytosis. Therefore, eisosomes seem to coordinate the regulation of both membrane tension and nutrient transporter stability.
