Abstract

In this paper we describe the operation and performance of the HERA-B Outer Tracker, a 112674 channel system of planar drift tube layers. The performance of the HERA-B Outer Tracker system fullfilled all requirements for stable and efficient operation in a hadronic environment, thus confirming the adequacy of the honeycomb drift tube technology and of the front-end readout system. The detector was stably operated with a gas gain of 30000 in an Ar/CF4/CO2 (65:30:5) gas mixture, yielding a good efficiency for triggering and track reconstruction, larger than 95 % for tracks with momenta above 5 GeV/c. The hit resolution of the drift cells was 300 to 320 micrometers and the relative momentum resolution can be described as: sigma(p)/p (in %) = (1.61 +- 0.02) + (0.0051 +- 0.0006) p. At the end of the HERA-B running no aging effects in the Outer Tracker cells were observed., Comment: 38 pages, 20 figures. v2: Added clarifications about trigger efficiency, momentum resolution and alignment precision. Abstract

A measurement of the polarization of Λ and Λ ¯ baryons produced in pC and pW collisions at s = 41.6 GeV has been performed with the HERA-B spectrometer. The measurements cover the kinematic range of 0.6 GeV / c p ⊥ 1.2 GeV / c in transverse momentum and − 0.15 x F 0.01 in Feynman-x. The polarization results from the two different targets agree within the statistical error. In the combined data set, the largest deviation from zero, + 0.054 ± 0.029 , is measured for x F ≲ − 0.07 . Zero polarization is expected at x F = 0 in the absence of nuclear effects. The polarization results for the Λ agree with a parametrization of previous measurements which were performed at positive x F values, where the Λ polarization is negative. Results of Λ ¯ polarization measurements are consistent with zero.

Abstract

Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (U) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((U) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

Abstract

Coincidence cross sections for the 12 C(e, e′pp) and 12 C(e, e′p) reactions have been measured in the Δ-resonance region. The 12 C(e, e′pp) reaction has been measured at three different angular settings of the proton detectors to investigate the angular correlation between the emitted protons. The data, which have a low statistical accuracy, are compared with a calculation based on the direct-knockout mechanism, which includes one- and two-body currents. NN-correlations are accounted for via a correlation function, Δ-excitation via a two-body current and final-state interactions of the emitted protons via an optical potential. The 12 C(e, e′p) data, taken at large proton-emission angles, cover the region of high missing-energy values (145–275 MeV). The data are compared to results of a calculation taking into account meson exchange, intermediate Δ-excitation and pion production. This comparison shows that there is ample evidence for processes leading to multi-nucleon knockout.

Abstract

Two plastic scintillator arrays with fast read-out electronics have been constructed for proton detection in an electron scattering environment. The detectors, one consisting of 47 and the other of 53 scintillators, each subtend a 39 msr solid angle and cover dynamic ranges of 25–158 and 37–198 MeV, respectively. The segmentation of the detector allows detection at forward scattering angles (> 50°) at a luminosity of 8×10 36 nucleons s −1 cm −2 (at about 1 MHz per element). The charge and time of arrival of each photomultiplier signal are digitized by two Flash ADCs. The read-out of background events is suppressed efficiently by a proper coincidence requirement in the first-level trigger. An unambiguous identification of protons and pions is obtained. The energy resolution amounts to 3.3 MeV for 87 MeV protons, while the intrinsic timing resolution is estimated at 0.6 ns.

Abstract

We have searched for ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$(1540) and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$(1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-inducedreactions on C, Ti, and W targets at midrapidity and $\sqrt{s}=41.6\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$. In $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{8}$ inelastic eventswe find no evidence for narrow ($\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\approx}5\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{M}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$) signals in the ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ channels; our 95% C.L. upper limits (UL) forthe inclusive production cross section times branching fraction $\mathcal{B}\text{ }d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dy{|}_{y\ensuremath{\approx}0}$ are $(4--16)\ensuremath{\mu}b/N$ for a ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ mass between 1521 and 1555 MeV,and $2.5\ensuremath{\mu}b/N$ for the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$. The UL of the yield ratio of ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}/\ensuremath{\Lambda}(1520)l(3--12)%$ is significantly lower than model predictions.Our UL of $\mathcal{B}\text{ }{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}/\ensuremath{\Xi}(1530{)}^{0}l4%$ is at variance with the results that have provided the first evidencefor the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$.

Abstract

The inclusive production cross sections of the charmed mesons D^0, D^+, D_s^+ and D^{*+} have been measured in interactions of 920 GeV protons on C, Ti, and W targets with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. Differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and Feynman's x variable are given for the central rapidity region and for transverse momenta up to $\pT=3.5$ GeV/$c$. The atomic mass number dependence and the leading to non-leading particle production asymmetries are presented as well., Comment: Submitted to EPJ C

Abstract

A study of the angular distributions of leptons from decays of J/psi's produced in p-C and p-W collisions at sqrt{s}=41.6 GeV has been performed in the Feynman-x region -0.34 < x_F < 0.14 and for transverse momentum up to 5.4 GeV/c. The data were collected by the HERA-B experiment at the HERA proton ring of the DESY laboratory. The results, based on a clean selection of 2.3 x 10^5 J/psi's reconstructed in both the e^+ e^- and mu^+ mu^- decay channels, indicate that J/psi's are produced with longitudinal polarization. The magnitude of the effect is maximal at low p_T. For p_T >1 GeV/c a significant dependence on the reference frame is found: the polar anisotropy is more pronounced in the Collins-Soper frame and almost vanishes in the helicity frame, where, instead, a significant azimuthal anisotropy arises., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 8 tables
