Cultural heritage institutions are exploring Semantic Web technologies to publish and enrich their catalogues. Several initiatives, such as Labs, are based on the creative and innovative reuse of the materials published by cultural heritage institutions. In this way, quality has become a crucial aspect to identify and reuse a dataset for research. In this article, we propose a methodology to create Shape Expressions definitions in order to validate LOD datasets published by libraries. The methodology was then applied to four use cases based on datasets published by relevant institutions. It intends to encourage institutions to use ShEx to validate LOD datasets as well as to promote the reuse of LOD, made openly available by libraries. The information required to select grammatical gender in machine translation of isolated sentences for gender-marking languages is frequently missing or difficult to extract. Our text-centric, black-box study demonstrates how the gender distribution of the training set is distorted at the output. Human evaluation reveals that gender clues are frequently absent from the source, resulting in stereotyped translations. En la traducció automàtica d'oracions aïllades a llengües que marquen el gènere, la informació necessària per seleccionar el gènere gramatical sovint n’és absent o és difícil d'extraure’n. Aquest estudi de caixa negra i centrat en el text mostra com la distribució de gènere del conjunt d’entrenament es distorsiona en l’eixida. Una avaluació humana revela que sovint no hi ha cap pista de gènere en l’original, cosa que condueix a traduccions estereotipades. La información necesaria para seleccionar el género gramatical en la traducción automática de oraciones aisladas a lenguas que marcan el género suele estar ausente o ser difícil de extraer. Este estudio de caja negra y centrado en el texto demuestra cómo la distribución de género del conjunto de entrenamiento se distorsiona en la salida. Una evaluación humana revela que los indicios de género suelen estar ausentes en el original, lo cual da lugar a traducciones estereotipadas.

Computer-aided translation tools based on translation memories are widely used to assist professional translators. A translation memory (TM) consists of a set of translation units (TU) made up of source- and target-language segment pairs. For the translation of a new source segment s', these tools search the TM and retrieve the TUs (s,t) whose source segments are more similar to s'. The translator then chooses a TU and edit the target segment t to turn it into an adequate translation of s'. Fuzzy-match repair (FMR) techniques can be used to automatically modify the parts of t that need to be edited. We describe a language-independent FMR method that first uses machine translation to generate, given s' and (s,t), a set of candidate fuzzy-match repaired segments, and then chooses the best one by estimating their quality. An evaluation on three different language pairs shows that the selected candidate is a good approximation to the best (oracle) candidate produced and is closer to reference translations than machine-translated segments and unrepaired fuzzy matches (t). In addition, a single quality estimation model trained on a mix of data from all the languages performs well on any of the languages used. In recent years, we have witnessed a steady growth of linguistic information represented and exposed as linked data on the Web. Such linguistic linked data have stimulated the development and use of openly available linguistic knowledge graphs, as is the case with Apertium RDF, a collection of interconnected bilingual dictionaries represented and accessible through Semantic Web standards. In this work, we explore techniques that exploit the graph nature of bilingual dictionaries to automatically infer new links (translations). We build upon a cycle density based method: partitioning the graph into biconnected components for a speed-up, and simplifying the pipeline through a careful structural analysis that reduces hyperparameter tuning requirements. We also analyse the shortcomings of traditional evaluation metrics used for translation inference and propose to complement them with new ones, both-word precision (BWP) and both-word recall (BWR), aimed at being more informative of algorithmic improvements. Over twenty-seven language pairs, our algorithm produces dictionaries about 70% the size of existing Apertium RDF dictionaries at a high BWP of 85% from scratch within a minute. Human evaluation shows that 78% of the additional translations generated for enrichment are correct as well. We further describe an interesting use-case: inferring synonyms within a single language, on which our initial human-based evaluation shows an average accuracy of 84%. In the context of neural machine translation, data augmentation (DA) techniques may be used for generating additional training samples when the available parallel data are scarce. Many DA approaches aim at expanding the support of the empirical data distribution by generating new sentence pairs that contain infrequent words, thus making it closer to the true data distribution of parallel sentences. In this paper, we propose to follow a completely different approach and present a multi-task DA approach in which we generate new sentence pairs with transformations, such as reversing the order of the target sentence, which produce unfluent target sentences. During training, these augmented sentences are used as auxiliary tasks in a multi-task framework with the aim of providing new contexts where the target prefix is not informative enough to predict the next word. This strengthens the encoder and forces the decoder to pay more attention to the source representations of the encoder. Experiments carried out on six low-resource translation tasks show consistent improvements over the baseline and over DA methods aiming at extending the support of the empirical data distribution. Este artículo aborda las causas que, en opinión del autor, han motivado la adopción creciente de sistemas de traducción automática (TA) para la producción de borradores para la posedición. Estas causas son principalmente cuatro: la mejora en las técnicas de TA, la mayor disponibilidad de recursos tales como software y datos, el cambio en las expectativas de los usuarios en cuanto a lo que se puede esperar o no de un sistema de TA, y por último la mayor integración de sistemas TA en entornos de ayuda a la traducción. Aquest article aborda les causes que, en opinió de l'autor, han motivat l'adopció crecient de sistemes de traducció automàtica (TA) per produir esborranys per a la postedició. Aquestes causes són principalment quatre: la millora en les tècniques de TA, la major disponibilitat de recursos com ara programari i dades, el canvi en les expectatives dels usuaris quant al que es pot esperar o no d'un sistema de TA, i finalment la major integració de sistemes TA en entorns d'ajuda a la traducció. This article discusses the causes which, in the author's opinion, have led to an increase of the adoption of machine translation (MT) to produce drafts for post-editing. There are four main causes for this: improvement of MT techniques, increased availability of resources such as software and data, a change in users' expectation about MT, i.e. what can and cannot be expected from an MT system, and better ways of integrating MT systems in compute-aided translation tools.

Las instituciones GLAM (del inglés, Galleries, Libraries, Museums and Archives) publican contenidos y materiales en formato digital, así como también herramientas y prototipos en acceso abierto. En este sentido, las organizaciones están desarrollando laboratorios (labs), liderados por la Biblioteca Británica, para fomentar la reutilización de las colecciones digitales de forma innovadora y creativa atrayendo investigadores multidisciplinares incluyendo perfiles tecnológicos pero también de humanidades. Este trabajo sugiere que las instituciones GLAM, y en particular los Labs, proporcionan colecciones digitales que son adecuadas para el ámbito de la educación. En este sentido, recursos como las colecciones de Jupyter Notebooks son un recurso pedagógico que facilita la reutilización de las colecciones digitales a través de entornos reproducibles y ejecutados en la nube. Los resultados de este trabajo pueden ser utilizados por la comunidad educativa para crear y enriquecer asignaturas basadas en el uso de colecciones digitales y recursos facilitados por instituciones GLAM. El trabajo futuro incluye la exploración y adaptación del uso de Jupyter Notebooks en titulaciones basadas en Humanidades Digitales.

The catalogue of the Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes contains about 200,000 records which were originally created in compliance with the MARC21 standard. The entries in the catalogue have been recently migrated to a new relational database whose data model adheres to the conceptual models promoted by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), in particular, to the FRBR and FRAD specifications. The database content has been later mapped, by means of an automated procedure, to RDF triples which employ basically the RDA vocabulary (Resource Description and Access) to describe the entities, as well as their properties and relationships. This RDF-based semantic description of the catalogue is now accessible online through an interface which supports browsing and searching the information. Due to their open nature, these public data can be easily linked and used for new applications created by external developers and institutions. The methods applied for the automation of the conversion, which build upon open-source software components, are described here.

Interactive translation prediction (ITP) is a modality of computer-aided translation that assists professional translators by offering context-based computer-generated continuation suggestions as they type. While most state-of-the-art ITP systems follow a glass-box approach, meaning that they are tightly coupled to an adapted machine translation system, a black-box approach which does not need access to the inner workings of the bilingual resources used to generate the suggestions has been recently proposed in the literature: this new approach allows new sources of bilingual information to be included almost seamlessly. In this paper, we compare for the first time the glass-box and the black-box approaches by means of an automatic evaluation of translation tasks between related languages such as English–Spanish and unrelated ones such as Arabic–English and English–Chinese, showing that, with our setup, 20%–50% of keystrokes could be saved using either method and that the black-box approach outperformed the glass-box one in five out of six scenarios operating under similar conditions. We also performed a preliminary human evaluation of English to Spanish translation for both approaches. On average, the evaluators saved 10% keystrokes and were 4% faster with the black-box approach, and saved 15% keystrokes and were 12% slower with the glass-box one; but they could have saved 51% and 69% keystrokes respectively if they had used all the compatible suggestions. Users felt the suggestions helped them to translate faster and easier. All the tools used to perform the evaluation are available as free/open–source software. La creació de sistemes de traducció automàtica per a llengües desfavorides, que anomenaré llengües menors, presenta diversos reptes alhora que obri la porta a noves oportunitats. Després de definir conceptes preliminars com ara els de llengua menor i traducció automàtica, i d’explicar breument els tipus de traducció automàtica existents, els usos més comuns, el tipus de dades en què es basen, i els drets d’ús i les llicències del programari i de les dades de traducció automàtica, es discuteixen els reptes a què s’enfronta la construcció de sistemes de traducció automàtica i els possibles efectes sobre l’estatus de la llengua menor, usant com a exemples llengües menors d’Europa. Building machine translation systems for disadvantaged languages, which I will call minor languages, poses a number of challenges whilst also opening the door to new opportunities. After defining a few basic concepts, such as minor language and machine translation, the paper provides a brief overview of the types of machine translation available today, their most common uses, the type of data they are based on, and the usage rights and licences of machine translation software and data. Then, it describes the challenges involved in building machine translation systems, as well as the effects these systems can have on the status of minor languages. Finally, this is illustrated by drawing on examples from minor languages in Europe.

Esta propuesta presenta Test-Bot, un prototipo diseñado para evaluar pruebas objetivas en tiempo real. Ha sido entrenado con un corpus formado por preguntas y respuestas extraídas de diferentes pruebas realizadas en años anteriores en la asignatura Sistemas y Tecnología de la Información, impartida en la carrera de Ingeniería Informática. Se han diseñado los diferentes flujos de conversación, que se han adaptado de acuerdo con las respuestas dadas por los usuarios; Cuando las respuestas son incorrectas, el sistema refuerza los contenidos al proporcionar preguntas adicionales; Las frases de capacitación se han extraído y clasificado de acuerdo con el tipo de contenido de las preguntas y, finalmente, se han identificado los intentos.

Cultural heritage institutions have recently started to share their metadata as Linked Open Data (LOD) in order to disseminate and enrich them. The publication of large bibliographic data sets as LOD is a challenge that requires the design and implementation of custom methods for the transformation, management, querying and enrichment of the data. In this report, the methodology defined by previous research for the evaluation of the quality of LOD is analysed and adapted to the specific case of Resource Description Framework (RDF) triples containing standard bibliographic information. The specified quality measures are reported in the case of four highly relevant libraries. Informe técnico sobre el trabajo realizado por Víctor Manuel Sánchez Cartagena en una estancia en "Athena Research and Innovation Center", mientras estaba contratado por la empresa Prompsit Language Engineering y era colaborador honorífico en el Departamento de Lenguajes y Sistemas Informáticos de la Universidad de Alicante. This paper describes the process we followed in order to build English-Greek machine translation systems for the tourism/culture domain. We experimented with different data sets and domain adaptation methods for statistical machine translation and also built neural machine translation systems. The in-domain data were obtained by means of the ILSP Focused Crawler. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2013 under grant agreement PIAP-GA-2012-324414 (Abu-MaTran).

Most organisations using Open Data currently focus on data processing and analysis. However, although Open Data may be available online, these data are generally of poor quality, thus discouraging others from contributing to and reusing them. This paper describes an approach to publish statistical data from public repositories by using Semantic Web standards published by the W3C, such as RDF and SPARQL, in order to facilitate the analysis of multidimensional models. We have defined a framework based on the entire lifecycle of data publication including a novel step of Linked Open Data assessment and the use of external repositories as knowledge base for data enrichment. As a result, users are able to interact with the data generated according to the RDF Data Cube vocabulary, which makes it possible for general users to avoid the complexity of SPARQL when analysing data. The use case was applied to the Barcelona Open Data platform and revealed the benefits of the application of our approach, such as helping in the decision-making process. En este trabajo, titulado “Utilización de la metodología ABP para conseguir una mejor adecuación de los complementos formativos en el máster de Desarrollo de Aplicaciones y Servicios Web” presentamos una experiencia educativa innovadora en que aplicamos la metodología ABP para facilitar la adquisición de los complementos formativos necesarios para realizar el seguimiento adecuado del máster. El alumnado que accede a este máster tiene diversos perfiles, en ocasiones no muy técnicos y necesita de complementos formativos. El ámbito de aplicación de esta experiencia educativa es un conjunto reducido de asignaturas impartidas en el máster de Desarrollo de Aplicaciones y Servicios Web. Después de evaluar la experiencia, se puede concluir que todos los grupos han superado los objetivos planteados en esta primera prueba y que la aplicación de la metodología ABP les ha ayudado en su consecución. Se ha valorado muy positivamente por parte de los alumnos, que el trabajo en grupo ayuda al aprendizaje. Esperamos poder seguir aplicando esta metodología y ampliar su ámbito de aplicación.

En aquest article, s’estudia l’efecte de les regles de preedició en la qualitat de les traduccions produïdes pel sistema de TA Lucy LT en la traducció anglès-espanyol d’articles de notícies. Per a això, es va realitzar una anotació d'errors dels primers 200 segments del corpus News Crawl: articles from 2014 i es van elaborar 8 regles de preedició. El resultat d’aplicar aquestes regles a un conjunt diferent de segments del mateix corpus va ser una reducció de la taxa d'error per paraula d’un 11% aproximadament., In this paper we study the effect of pre-editing rules on the quality of the translations produced by the MT system Lucy LT when translating English news texts into Spanish. We carried out an error annotation of the first 200 segments of the News Crawl: articles from 2014 corpus and devised a set of 8 pre-editing rules. The application of these rules to a different set of segments from the same corpus results in a reduction of the word error rate of about 11%., En este artículo, se estudia el efecto de las reglas de preedición en la calidad de las traducciones producidas por el sistema de TA Lucy LT en la traducción inglés−español de artículos de noticias. Tradicionalmente, la comunicación entre alumnos y profesores se ha basado en la comunicación presencial y tutoriales virtuales, dicha comunicación, en general, se retrasa en el tiempo. Recientemente, los agentes conversacionales, en forma de chatbots, se han convertido en una realidad en las redes sociales y aplicaciones de mensajería, gracias a los avances en inteligencia artificial. Con respecto a la aplicación de las TIC en un contexto educativo, y el caso particular de UACloud en la Universidad de Alicante, la aplicación de chatbots en la enseñanza facilitaría el trabajo de los profesores y proporcionando respuestas inmediatas a los alumnos. El prototipo del chatbot presentado en esta red ha sido entrenado a través de un conjunto de tutoriales facilitados por distintos profesores. Se ha realizado un análisis de las tutorías y se han diseñado distintos flujos de conversación. Las frases de entrenamiento han sido extraídas y clasificadas según el tipo de tutoría. Y finalmente, se han establecido las diferentes intenciones. El análisis del texto de las tutorías muestra que en un alto porcentaje se repiten las mismas preguntas, por diferentes alumnos. Finalmente, discutimos el potencial de los chatbots en un contexto educativo, identificando necesidades y líneas futuras de trabajo.

Statistical and rule-based methods are complementary approaches to machine translation (MT) that have different strengths and weaknesses. This complementarity has, over the last few years, resulted in the consolidation of a growing interest in hybrid systems that combine both data-driven and linguistic approaches. In this paper, we address the situation in which the amount of bilingual resources that is available for a particular language pair is not sufficiently large to train a competitive statistical MT system, but the cost and slow development cycles of rule-based MT systems cannot be afforded either. In this context, we formalise a new method that uses scarce parallel corpora to automatically infer a set of shallow-transfer rules to be integrated into a rule-based MT system, thus avoiding the need for human experts to handcraft these rules.Our work is based on the alignment template approach to phrase-based statistical MT, but the definition of the alignment template is extended to encompass different generalisation levels. It is also greatly inspired by the work of Sanchez-Martinez and Forcada (2009) in which alignment templates were also considered for shallow-transfer rule inference. However, our approach overcomes many relevant limitations of that work, principally those related to the inability to find the correct generalisation level for the alignment templates, and to select the subset of alignment templates that ensures an adequate segmentation of the input sentences by the rules eventually obtained. Unlike previous approaches in literature, our formalism does not require linguistic knowledge about the languages involved in the translation. Moreover, it is the first time that conflicts between rules are resolved by choosing the most appropriate ones according to a global minimisation function rather than proceeding in a pairwise greedy fashion.Experiments conducted using five different language pairs with the free/open-source rule-based MT platform Apertium show that translation quality significantly improves when compared to the method proposed by Sanchez-Martinez and Forcada (2009), and is close to that obtained using handcrafted rules. For some language pairs, our approach is even able to outperform them. Moreover, the resulting number of rules is considerably smaller, which eases human revision and maintenance.

Word-level machine translation (MT) quality estimation (QE) is usually formulated as the task of automatically identifying which words need to be edited (either deleted or replaced) in a translation T produced by an MT system. The advantage of estimating MT quality at the word level is that this information can be used to guide post-editors since it enables the identification of the specific words in T that need to be edited in order to ease their work. However, word-level MT QE, as defined in the current literature, has an obvious limitation: it does not identify the positions in T in which missing words need to be inserted. To deal with this limitation, we propose a method which identifies both word deletions and insertion positions in T. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first approach allowing the identification of insertion positions in word-level MT QE. The method proposed can use any source of bilingual information —such as MT, dictionaries, or phrase-level translation memories— to extract features that are then used by a neural network to produce a prediction for both words and insertion positions (gaps between words) in the translation T. In this paper, several feature sets and neural network architectures are explored and evaluated on publicly-available datasets used in previous evaluation campaigns for word-level MT QE. The results confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach, as well as the usefulness of sharing information between the two prediction tasks in order to obtain more reliable quality estimations. We describe the Learn portal of Translation Commons (TC), a self-managed community of volunteer translators community aimed at sharing tools, resources and initiatives for the translation community as a whole. Members are encouraged to upload and share their free resources on the platform and to create free courses and tutorials. Specifically there are no educational material on machine translation yet and we invite experts to contribute.

The IMPACT-es diachronic corpus of historical Spanish compiles over one hundred books—containing approximately 8 million words—in addition to a complementary lexicon which links more than 10,000 lemmas with attestations of the different variants found in the documents. This textual corpus and the accompanying lexicon have been released under an open license (Creative Commons BY-NC-SA) in order to permit their intensive exploitation in linguistic research. Approximately 7 % of the words in the corpus (a selection aimed at enhancing the coverage of the most frequent word forms) have been annotated with their lemma, part of speech, and modern equivalent. This paper describes the annotation criteria followed and the standards, based on the Text Encoding Initiative recommendations, used to represent the texts in digital form. Estudio del proyecto de archivo on-line como herramienta epistemológica y docente en el contexto de las asignaturas de proyectos arquitectónicos. Este trabajo es especialmente valioso para la definición de los objetivos generales tanto del grado como del máster en arquitectura. Para los estudiantes, la exigencia de análisis de numerosos ejemplos les permitirá mejorar sus capacidades de discriminación y detección de valor.

This paper presents a new method with which to assist individuals with no background in linguistics to create monolingual dictionaries such as those used by the morphological analysers of many natural language processing applications. The involvement of non-expert users is especially critical for under-resourced languages which either lack or cannot afford the recruitment of a skilled workforce. Adding a word to a morphological dictionary usually requires identifying its stem along with the inflection paradigm that can be used in order to generate all the word forms of the new entry. Our method works under the assumption that the average speakers of a language can successfully answer the polar question “is x a valid form of the word w to be inserted?”, where x represents tentative alternative (inflected) forms of the new word w. The experiments show that with a small number of polar questions the correct stem and paradigm can be obtained from non-experts with high success rates. We study the impact of different heuristic and probabilistic approaches on the actual number of questions. En el curso 2015-16 se implantó la nueva titulación de grado en Ingeniería Robótica en la Universidad de Alicante. Este grado es el primero en el territorio nacional de estas características. El perfil de los estudiantes es una combinación entre un ingeniero industrial y uno informático, perfil muy demandado por las empresas. Por lo tanto, esta es la segunda vez que se imparte el primer curso de esta titulación. Se hace necesario una coordinación de los contenidos de las asignaturas para evitar posibles solapes o carencias y más cuando ya se ha implantado el segundo curso de la titulación, donde se pueden identificar posibles carencias en los contenidos.

La evaluación de las asignaturas en los grados, basados en el EEES, se realiza de forma continua en todas las asignaturas. Desde la puesta en marcha de los grados, la evaluación continua ha sido criticada por la carga de Trabajo que representa tanto para el alumnado como el profesorado. Hace unos años realizamos un proyecto colaborativo para la realización del Calendario de evaluación continua por curso académico. Dicho calendario da una muestra de las evaluaciones y controles que se realizan en las asignaturas de cada curso y cada semestre, sin tener en cuenta las prácticas. Sin embargo, las actividades de evaluación han ido cambiando y en ocasiones no se detallan en la guía docente. Esto no permite realizar un calendario de evaluación real del curso. El objetivo de este proyecto ha sido doble, por un lado coordinar todas las evaluaciones, controles, y actividades obligatorias o voluntarias de evaluación en todas las asignaturas de cuarto curso del Grado de Telecomunicaciones de la Escuela Politécnica Superior (EPS) y por otro, la realización de un estudio mediante encuesta al alumnado para la obtención de conclusiones sobre la planificación de evaluación continua que se está realizando en el curso.

We propose a simple, linear-combination automatic evaluation measure (AEM) to approximate post-editing (PE) effort. Effort is measured both as PE time and as the number of PE operations performed. The ultimate goal is to define an AEM that can be used to optimize machine translation (MT) systems to minimize PE effort, but without having to perform unfeasible repeated PE during optimization. As PE effort is expected to be an extensive magnitude (i.e., one growing linearly with the sentence length and which may be simply added to represent the effort for a set of sentences), we use a linear combination of extensive and pseudo-extensive features. One such pseudo-extensive feature, 1–BLEU times the length of the reference, proves to be almost as good a predictor of PE effort as the best combination of extensive features. Surprisingly, effort predictors computed using independently obtained reference translations perform reasonably close to those using actual post-edited references. In the early stage of this research and given the inherent complexity of carrying out experiments with professional post-editors, we decided to carry out an automatic evaluation of the AEMs proposed rather than a manual evaluation to measure the effort needed to post-edit the output of an MT system tuned on these AEMs. The results obtained seem to support current tuning practice using BLEU, yet pointing at some limitations. Apart from this intrinsic evaluation, an extrinsic evaluation was also carried out in which the AEMs proposed were used to build synthetic training corpora for MT quality estimation, with results comparable to those obtained when training with measured PE efforts. This paper describes the resources available in the Apertium platform, a free/open-source framework for creating rule-based machine translation systems. Resources within the platform take the form of finite-state morphologies for morphological analysis and generation, bilingual transfer lexica, probabilistic part-of-speech taggers and transfer rule files, all in standardised formats. These resources are described and some examples are given of their reuse and recycling in combination with other machine translation systems. Sentence-aligned web-crawled parallel text or bitext is frequently used to train statistical machine translation systems. To that end, web-crawled sentence-aligned bitext sets are sometimes made publicly available and distributed by translation technologies practitioners. Contrary to what may be commonly believed, distribution of web-crawled text is far from being free from legal implications, and may sometimes actually violate the usage restrictions. As the distribution and availability of sentence-aligned bitext is key to the development of statistical machine translation systems, this paper proposes an alternative: instead of copying and distributing copies of web content in the form of sentence-aligned bitext, one could distribute a legally safer stand-off annotation of web content, that is, files that identify where the aligned sentences are, so that end users can use this annotation to privately recrawl the bitexts. The paper describes and discusses the legal and technical aspects of this proposal, and outlines an implementation. En el curso docente 2010-2011 se inició la implantación del grado en Ingeniería Multimedia, título próximo a la Ingeniería Informática, pero enfocada a formar a profesionales capaces de gestionar proyectos Multimedia tanto en el ámbito del ocio como en el de la gestión de contenidos en redes de información. Esta implantación ha sido progresiva, de manera que cada año se iniciaba un curso nuevo de esta titulación, motivo por el cual este año, 2014-2015, es el primer año en el que el título está completamente implantado desde el inicio del curso. Esto nos ha llevado a plantearnos realizar un estudio sobre como están interconectadas las asignaturas en los distintos cursos. Este estudio ha tenido como objetivo averiguar los problemas o carencias de conocimientos que, por un lado tienen los alumnos en 2º curso, y por otro los que se pueden encontrar en 3º, así como establecer las posibles vías de solución a estos problemas, con la finalidad de mejorar el rendimiento en el aprendizaje de los alumnos. También se ha realizado un seguimiento sobre la evaluación de los alumnos realizada en las asignaturas de 2º para contrastar su adecuación al sistema de evaluación continua promovido por el Plan Bolonia.

Este libro cubre la mayor parte de los contenidos de la asignatura Tecnologías de la Traducción que cursara el alumnado de segundo curso del grado en Traducción e Interpretación de la Universitat d'Alacant; también puede ser útil para asignaturas similares en otras universidades (por eso se ha incluido material más avanzado que no se estudia en Tecnologías de la Traducción). Aquest llibre cobreixen la major part dels continguts de l'assignatura Tecnologies de la Traducció que cursara l'alumnat de segon curs del grau en Traducció i Interpretació de la Universitat d’Alacant; també pot ser útil per a assignatures similars en altres universitats (per aixo s’hi ha inclòs material mes avançat que no s'estudia en Tecnologies de la Traducció).

En esta memoria se describe el proyecto realizado para la evaluación de la implantación transversal del itinerario de Creación y Entretenimiento digital del cuarto curso del Grado en Ingeniería Multimedia de la Escuela Politécnica Superior, como continuación del planteamiento realizado en el proyecto del curso anterior de preparación, coordinación y seguimiento de las asignaturas del citado itinerario (identificador 3013). En el marco creado por los nuevos estudios dentro del EEES, el proyecto ha tenido como objetivos principales la preparación y coordinación de las asignaturas para el desarrollo de la metodología de Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos (ABP), y la elaboración de las fichas de las asignaturas y el ajuste de recursos disponibles y laboratorios. A partir de la experiencia adquirida en la planificación de cursos previos, se han elaborado las guías docentes de las asignaturas ajustando las del curso anterior. También se presentan los resultados obtenidos en la segunda experiencia llevada a cabo en este curso, expresados en horas de dedicación al proyecto y en grado de satisfacción tanto del alumnado como del profesorado con la metodología ABP. Por último, se ha mantenido la página web informativa del itinerario creada el curso anterior, publicando noticias relacionadas y mejorando diversos aspectos.

Probabilistic finite-state machines are used today in a variety of areas in pattern recognition, or in fields to which pattern recognition is linked: computational linguistics, machine learning, time series analysis, circuit testing, computational biology, speech recognition, and machine translation are some of them. In Part I of this paper, we survey these generative objects and study their definitions and properties. In Part II, we will study the relation of probabilistic finite-state automata with other well-known devices that generate strings as hidden Markov models and n-grams and provide theorems, algorithms, and properties that represent a current state of the art of these objects. Process mining is a group of techniques for retrieving de-facto models using system traces. Discovering algorithms can obtain mathematical models exploiting the information contained into list of events of activities. Completeness of the traces is relevant for the accuracy of the final results. Noiseless traces appear as an ideal scenario. The performance of the algorithms is significant reduce if the log files are not processed efficiently. XES is a logical model for process logs stored in data centric xml files. In real processes the sizes of the logs increase exponentially. Parsing XES files is presented as a big data problem in real scenarios with dense traces. Lazy parsers and DOM models are not enough appropriate in scenarios with large volumes of data. We discuss this problematic and how to use indexing techniques for retrieving useful information for process mining. An XES compression schema is also discussed for reducing the index construction time.

The aim of this work is to show the novel index structure based suffix array and ternary search tree with rank and select succinct data structure. Suffix arrays were originally developed to reduce memory consumption compared to a suffix tree and ternary search tree combine the time efficiency of digital tries with the space efficiency of binary search trees. Rank of a symbol at a given position equals the number of times the symbol appears in the corresponding prefix of the sequence. Select is the inverse, retrieving the positions of the symbol occurrences. These operations are widely used in information retrieval and management, being the base of several data structures and algorithms for text collections, graphs, trees, etc. The resulting structure is faster than hashing for many typical search problems, and supports a broader range of useful problems and operations. There for we implement a path index based on those data structures that shown to be highly efficient when dealing with digital collection consist in structured documents. We describe how the index architecture works and we compare the searching algorithms with others, and finally experiments show the outperforms with earlier approaches.

Habida cuenta del interés del alumnado de Ciencias, tanto a nivel bachillerato como universitario, por la Nanotecnología y tras la organización de dos cursos sobre la misma en la UVRA, el Laboratorio de Nanotecnología Molecular de la UA se embarcó en el proyecto de diseño y construcción del primer MOOC (del inglés Massive On-line Open Course) sobre Nanotecnología en España, contando con el asesoramiento de UniMOOC. El objetivo del curso es obtener una mejor comprensión de la nanotecnología y su conexión con la vida real; un nuevo enfoque didáctico para la enseñanza de la Nanotecnología en titulaciones superiores y Máster Universitarios. El sitio web es la principal guía a través de los recursos y actividades del curso, donde el estudiante dispone de una serie de herramientas gratuitas que descubrirá en las diferentes unidades, como vídeos, tutoriales, applets, etc. En este contexto, hemos creado una Red de investigación en docencia universitaria en colaboración con el Dpto. Lenguajes y Sistemas de la UA y UniMOOC, cuyo objetivo es la actualización de contenidos, actividades y recursos del mismo, su puesta en marcha y difusión, así como el análisis de su posible implantación en titulaciones afines.

El propósito fundamental de esta red es la implantación de una nueva metodología interactiva para realizar evaluaciones a distancia. Actualmente en algunas universidades se han establecido protocolos de evaluación con diferentes nombres, exámenes por fax, Examen de incidencias, Exámenes a distancia para Erasmus, etc. El aumento en la movilidad de los estudiantes de la titulación de Arquitectura y los problemas de convalidación de asignaturas en los acuerdos de aprendizaje genera un problema a la hora de presentarse a las convocatorias oficiales. Las nuevas herramientas de videoconferencias como Skype, o Adobe Connect entre otros, ofrecen nuevos mecanismos bilaterales entre docentes y estudiantes que permiten prescindir de coordinadores ajenos para realizar exámenes a distancia.

En noviembre de 2012, el periódico The New York Times publicó el artículo “The Year of the MOOC” en el que se declaraba que el año 2012 había sido el año de los Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) debido a la amplia atención que había recibido este nuevo término por parte de los medios de comunicación y la comunidad educativa mundial. Mucha gente piensa que los MOOC son la innovación tecnológica en educación más importante de los últimos 200 años. E incluso Clayton Christensen, el famoso profesor de la Harvard Business School que acuñó el término “tecnología disruptiva”, piensa que los MOOC se pueden considerar disruptivos. ¿Realmente los MOOC son una revolución o son una simple moda? Aunque los MOOC ya existían desde unos pocos años antes como una herramienta de aprendizaje colaborativo, su uso se limitaba a usuarios con un perfil muy concreto; sin embargo, el año 2012 ha sido el año en el que los MOOC han pasado a ser conocidos y usados por el “gran público”. A simple vista, los cursos MOOC no se diferencian mucho de los cursos en línea tradicionales que existen desde hace años, ya que al igual que un curso en línea tradicional, un curso MOOC posee un temario o programa; unos materiales, que normalmente son un conjunto de vídeos, pero que también pueden incluir lecturas; unas actividades que se pueden evaluar de diferentes formas (autoevaluación, evaluación automática, evaluación entre pares); unos ejercicios de tipo test para evaluar el aprendizaje; y un foro para discutir con el profesor o con otros estudiantes. Sin embargo, una mirada más profunda nos revela que el papel, o más bien, el comportamiento que presenta un alumno en un curso MOOC es distinto al comportamiento que presenta en un curso en línea tradicional; además, el carácter de masivo que implica que en un curso pueden coexistir decenas de miles de alumnos al mismo tiempo, crea una clara diferencia cualitativa (y claro está, cuantitativa), respecto a los cursos en línea tradicionales. El carácter de masivo no se tiene que entender en el sentido peyorativo de “masivo igual a masificación”: el carácter de masivo permite que surjan ciertas dinámicas y que se puedan realizar ciertas actividades educativas que no se pueden dar cuando el número de alumnos es reducido.

We present OLE, a dissemination activity of the EU Abu-MaTran project which aims to establish a linguistic Olympiad in Spain. We introduce the Linguistic Olympiads, our rationale and objectives for setting up OLE as well as our implementation plan. We foresee our work to be useful for other countries looking to start a Linguistic Olympiad. Presentamos la OLE, una actividad de divulgación del proyecto europeo Abu-MaTran cuyo objetivo es establecer una olimpiada lingüística en España. Damos una introducción a las olimpiadas lingüísticas, presentamos nuestra motivación, nuestros objetivos y el plan de implementación. Pensamos que nuestro trabajo puede ser útil para otros países que quieran empezar una olimpiada lingüística. El artículo describe el desarrollo de un sistema de traducción automática del euskera al inglés pensado para la asimilación (comprensión) construido sobre la plataforma de traducción automática libre/de código fuente abierto basada en reglas Apertium, y lo evalúa preliminarmente usando un nuevo método basado en tests de clausura (cloze tests) en los que se pide que se rellenen huecos en una traducción de referencia. Los resultados indican que la disponibilidad de las traducciones en bruto producidas por un sistema con un diccionario de unas 10.000 entradas y unas 300 reglas de traducción incrementan significativamente la capacidad de quien lee para completar los tests con éxito. The article describes the development of a machine translation system from Basque to English designed for assimilation (gisting) built on the free/opensource rule-based machine translation platform Apertium, and evaluates it preliminarly using a new method based in Cloze tests in which readers are asked to fill out gaps in a reference translation. The results indicate that the availability of the raw translations by a system with a dictionary of about 10,000 entries and about 300 translation rules increase significantly the ability of readers to complete the tests successfully. Development was funded through a grant of the European Association for Machine Translation.

Desde que en 2007-2008 se pusiera en práctica por vez primera la metodología MOOC (Cursos Abierto Online y Masivo), el proceso de innovación educativa se ha acelerado gracias a iniciativas tan potentes como Udacity, Coursera o MITx. Su impacto potencial en el mundo universitario y de la enseñanza en general han llevado a replantear el futuro de la educación a gran escala. El éxito de los MOOCs ha sido exponencial, desde los 50 matriculados en el curso de David Wiley sobre Educación Abierta (año 2007) hasta los más de 2.5 millones de inscritos en Coursera en 2012. Hasta este punto, se ha vivido un proceso de reafirmación y apuesta por el modelo tanto por parte de la sociedad como de las instituciones educativas de mayor prestigio en el mundo. A pesar de encontrarnos aun en un marco metodológico claramente experimental, ya nadie puede negar el éxito cosechado por los MOOCs y el previsible futuro que parece aguardarles. En este documento se presenta el caso UniMOOC como el primer MOOC para emprendedores en español, un proyecto que comienza a definirse en la primavera de 2012, y que cuenta con una proyección orientada a alcanzar los 60.000 alumnos en su primera edición. In 2007-2008 appeared for the very first time the MOOC phenomenon (Massive Open Online Course). Since then educational innovation process has accelerated due to initiatives like Udacity, Coursera or MITx. The potential impact of MOOCs in every educational grade has forced to rethink the future of universities and schools. The success of MOOCs has been exponential: the 2007 David Wiley's Open Education MOOC involved 50 students; in 2012 were more than 2.5 millions of courserians inscribed in at least one of the thousands MOOCs offered in Coursera. To gain the current success it has been necessary the society recognition and the support from the main educational institutions of the world. Nowadays the educational community is still in the first stage of the MOOC methodology, but what it has achieved in a few years aim to a favourable future. In this paper we present UniMOOC Project, like the first Spanish MOOC for entrepreneurships. This Project started to define in Spring of 2012, and it is projected to reach more than 60.000 users in its first edition.

This paper focuses on the development of Uni-MOOC aemprende, a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) based on Google CourseBuilder. Firstly, we discuss the current available platforms aimed to develop MOOCs: before developing UniMOOC aemprende, different MOOC platforms were reviewed in order to choose the most suitable for our requirements. Then, we explain why we selected Google CourseBuilder as the most suitable option for the requirements of our MOOC. Finally, we present the architecture of our MOOC, composed of different components that engage our students and help them succeed.

Los objetos de aprendizaje son una tecnología educativa asociada a la idea de diseñar, desarrollar, empaquetar y reutilizar recursos educativos digitales en procesos educativos de aprendizaje electrónico o e-learning. Un objeto de aprendizaje es un recurso educativo digital construido siguiendo un estándar de tal manera que pueda ser dispuesto en una plataforma de e-learning que acepte ese estándar. La creación de contenidos educativos reutilizables ha de tener en cuenta tanto los problemas técnicos asociados al formato de los recursos digitales como los derivados de la gestión de la propiedad intelectual de los materiales implicados en su elaboración. Todas las obras que se consideren de naturaleza intelectual tienen por defecto derechos de autor. El autor adquiere sobre su obra todos los derechos de forma automática, sin necesidad de hacer nada, ni siquiera es necesario indicar que esta tiene copyright. Esto provoca que al reutilizar un recurso de un tercero no estemos seguros de si tenemos permisos para hacerlo, si sería legal o en qué condiciones se pude utilizar. Esto es un obstáculo para la reutilización de recursos educativos elaborados por otros. Existen una serie de licencias alternativas al copyright, llamadas “licencias abiertas”, que permiten a los autores ceder algunos derechos sobre sus obras e indicar que se pueden utilizar, modificar y compartir libremente, siempre y cuando se respete la autoría de la obra. Estas licencias ayudan a los autores a promocionar sus creaciones a la vez que colaboran en el desarrollo, crecimiento y productividad de la sociedad en general.

We describe a general approach to compute a similarity measure between distributions generated by probabilistic tree automata that may be used in a number of applications in the pattern recognition ÿeld. In particular, we show how this similarity can be computed for families of structured (XML) documents. In such case, the use of regular expressions to specify the right part of the expansion rules adds some complexity to the task. Previous work on an interactive system aimed at helping non-expert users to enlarge the monolingual dictionaries of rule-based machine translation (MT) systems worked by discarding those inflection paradigms that cannot generate a set of inflected word forms validated by the user. This method, however, cannot deal with the common case where a set of different paradigms generate exactly the same set of inflected word forms, although with different inflection information attached. In this paper, we propose the use of an n-gram-based model of lexical categories and inflection information to select a single paradigm in cases where more than one paradigm generates the same set of word forms. Results obtained with a Spanish monolingual dictionary show that the correct paradigm is chosen for around 75% of the unknown words, thus making the resulting system (available under an open-source license) of valuable help to enlarge the monolingual dictionaries used in MT involving non-expert users without technical linguistic knowledge. In this paper we present a new and simple language-independent method for word-alignment based on the use of external sources of bilingual information such as machine translation systems. We show that the few parameters of the aligner can be trained on a very small corpus, which leads to results comparable to those obtained by the state-of-the-art tool GIZA++ in terms of precision. Regarding other metrics, such as alignment error rate or F-measure, the parametric aligner, when trained on a very small gold-standard (450 pairs of sentences), provides results comparable to those produced by GIZA++ when trained on an in-domain corpus of around 10,000 pairs of sentences. Furthermore, the results obtained indicate that the training is domain-independent, which enables the use of the trained aligner on the fly on any new pair of sentences. This communication will present the services built by the Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes, from now on BVMC, which aims to provide the documentary resources, in rich text formats, with scientific quality, that teachers can use in their practice. Created in 1999, The BVMC is the largest provider of information about Latin American classic literature in digital format. A high percentage of its works are in a standard, interdisciplinary and internationally format: XML (TEI 2). The XML TEI2 allows generating different rich formats, such as PDF’s, EPUB, etc., for scientific or teaching purposes. Based on these XML files, it is possible to generate educational material accessible from the web as open educational resources.

En este artículo se describe un método nuevo y sencillo para utilizar fuentes de información bilingüe para el alineamiento de palabras en segmentos de texto paralelos. Este método puede ser utilizado al vuelo, ya que no requiere de entrenamiento. Además, puede ser utilizado con corpus comparables. Hemos comparado los resultados de nuestro método con los obtenidos por la herramienta GIZA++, ampliamente utilizada para el alineamiento de palabras, obteniendo unos resultados bastante similares. In this paper we present a new and simple method for using sources of bilingual information for word alignment between parallel segments of text. This method can be used on the fly, since it does not need to be trained. In addition, it can also be applied on comparable corpora. We compare our method to the state-of-the-art tool GIZA++, widely used for word alignment, and we obtain very similar results. Nowadays, the social networks are spreading abroad different application domains. Also, the digital libraries are improving how their users exploit the catalog services with social capabilities. More recently, the Linked Data model defines a novel vision for the near future web applications. Our paper approaches a solution for managing users in a digital library with a semantic fashion.

This paper describes a novel approach aimed to identify a priori which subset of machine translation (MT) systems among a known set will produce the most reliable translations for a given source-language (SL) sentence. We aim to select this subset of MT systems by using only information extracted from the SL sentence to be translated, and without access to the inner workings of the MT systems being used. A system able to select in advance, without translating, that subset of MT systems will allow multi-engine MT systems to save computing resources and focus on the combination of the output of the best MT systems. The selection of the best MT systems is done by extracting a set of features from each SL sentence and then using maximum entropy classifiers trained over a set of parallel sentences. Preliminary experiments on two European language pairs show a small, non-statistical significant improvement. This paper describes the machine translation (MT) system developed by the Transducens Research Group, from Universitat d’Alacant, Spain, for the WMT 2011 shared translation task. We submitted a hybrid system for the Spanish–English language pair consisting of a phrase-based statistical MT system whose phrase table was enriched with bilingual phrase pairs matching transfer rules and dictionary entries from the Apertium shallow-transfer rule-based MT platform. Our hybrid system outperforms, in terms of BLEU, GTM and METEOR, a standard phrase-based statistical MT system trained on the same corpus, and received the second best BLEU score in the automatic evaluation.
