Abstract: In cross-beam energy transfer (CBET), the interference of two laser beams ponderomotively drives an ion-acoustic wave that coherently scatters light from one beam into the other. This redirection of laser beam energy can severely inhibit the performance of direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions. To assess the role of nonlinear and kinetic processes in direct-drive-relevant CBET, the energy transfer between two laser beams in the plasma conditions of an ICF implosion at the OMEGA laser facility was modeled using particle-in-cell simulations. For typical laser beam intensities, the simulations are in excellent agreement with linear kinetic theory, indicating that nonlinear processes do not play a role in direct-drive implosions. At higher intensities, CBET can be modified by pump depletion, backward stimulated Raman scattering, or ion trapping, depending on the plasma density.

Abstract: For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Abstract: Optical components for laser beams with high peak and averaged powers are being developed worldwide using stimulated plasma scattering that occurs when plasmas interact with intense, coherent light. After decades of pursuit of pulse compressors, mirrors, and other plasma based components that can be created by stimulated scattering from electron density perturbations forming on ultra-short time scales (e.g., via Stimulated Raman Scattering), more recent work has produced optical components on longer time scales allowing ion motion as well [via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS)]. In the most recent work, ion wave plasma optics have had success in producing pulses of focusable coherent light with high energy and fluence by operating on ns time scales and now promise to enable numerous applications. Experiments have further shown that in some parameter regimes, even simple plasma response models can describe the output of such optics with sufficient accuracy that they can be used as engineering tools to design plasma optics for future applications, as is already being done to control power deposition in fusion targets. In addition, the development of more sophisticated models promises to enable still higher performance from SBS driven plasma optical components under a wider range of conditions. The present status and most promising directions for future development of ion wave plasma optic techniques are discussed here.

Knowledge required for the development of new classes of antimigraine drugs might come from studying rare metabolic diseases associated with migraine. An illustrative example of a monogenetic disorder associated with migraine is the spectrum of disorders caused by the m.3243A>G mutation in the mitochondrial transfer RNA Leucine. Reported migraine prevalence figures in patients with this particular mutation vary considerably, but compared to the general population, m.3243A>G patients have a higher migraine prevalence. This burdensome symptom might sometimes even be the only clinical feature in maternal relatives carrying the m.3243A>G mutation. Although the exact sequence of events and the relative importance of factors underlying migraine in m.3243A>G MELAS spectrum disorders are still enigmatic, substantial evidence in man exist that dysfunctional mitochondria in both the vascular, the smooth muscle cells and the neuronal system and the interaction between these are at the starting point of the migraine developing pathophysiological cascade. Exclusively based on results of studies performed in patients harboring the m.3243A>G mutation, either in vivo or ex vivo, we here summarize our current understanding of mitochondrial angiopathy associated migraine in m.3243A>G patients which knowledge might lead to potential new avenues for migraine drug development.

Abstract: Optical Music Recognition (OMR) is an important technology within Music Information Retrieval. Deep learning models show promising results on OMR tasks, but symbol-level annotated data sets of sufficient size to train such models are not available and difficult to develop. We present a deep learning architecture called a Convolutional Sequence-to-Sequence model to both move towards an end-to-end trainable OMR pipeline, and apply a learning process that trains on full sentences of sheet music instead of individually labeled symbols. The model is trained and evaluated on a human generated data set, with various image augmentations based on real-world scenarios. This data set is the first publicly available set in OMR research with sufficient size to train and evaluate deep learning models. With the introduced augmentations a pitch recognition accuracy of 81% and a duration accuracy of 94% is achieved, resulting in a note level accuracy of 80%. 7. Similar patterns of clonally expanded somatic mtDNA mutations in the colon of heterozygous mtDNA mutator mice and ageing humans

Abstract: Clonally expanded mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations resulting in focal respiratory chain deficiency in individual cells are proposed to contribute to the ageing of human tissues that depend on adult stem cells for self-renewal; however, the consequences of these mutations remain unclear. A good animal model is required to investigate this further; but it is unknown whether mechanisms for clonal expansion of mtDNA mutations, and the mutational spectra, are similar between species. Here we show that mice, heterozygous for a mutation disrupting the proof-reading activity of mtDNA polymerase (PolgA(+/mut)) resulting in an increased mtDNA mutation rate, accumulate clonally expanded mtDNA point mutations in their colonic crypts with age. This results in focal respiratory chain deficiency, and by 81 weeks of age these animals exhibit a similar level and pattern of respiratory chain deficiency to 70-year-old human subjects. Furthermore, like in humans, the mtDNA mutation spectrum appears random and there is an absence of selective constraints. Computer simulations show that a random genetic drift model of mtDNA clonal expansion can accurately model the data from the colonic crypts of wild-type, PolgA(+/mut) animals, and humans, providing evidence for a similar mechanism for clonal expansion of mtDNA point mutations between these mice and humans.

Abstract: Summary Sporadic mitochondrial DNA mutations serve as clonal marks providing access to the identity and lineage potential of stem cells within human tissues. By combining quantitative clonal mapping with 3D reconstruction of adult human prostates, we show that multipotent basal stem cells, confined to discrete niches in juxta-urethral ducts, generate bipotent basal progenitors in directed epithelial migration streams. Basal progenitors are then dispersed throughout the entire glandular network, dividing and differentiating to replenish the loss of apoptotic luminal cells. Rare lineage-restricted luminal stem cells, and their progeny, are confined to proximal ducts and provide only minor contribution to epithelial homeostasis. In situ cell capture from clonal maps identified delta homolog 1 (DLK1) enrichment of basal stem cells, which was validated in functional spheroid assays. Abstract: The objective of this matched case-control study was to determine whether women with Même or Replicon polyurethane-covered silicone breast implants are exposed to clinically significant levels of free 2,4-TDA from biodegradation of the polyurethane foam. Urine and serum samples were obtained from 61 patients with Même or Replicon breast implants and 61 controls on two separate occasions separated by 10 +/- 3 days. Free TDA was analyzed by gas chromatography combined with negative chemical ionization mass spectrometry with lower limit of quantitation in both urine and serum of 10 pg/ml. The results were correlated with the length of time since implantation. No patients or controls had detectable free 2,4-TDA in their sera. Thirty patients had quantifiable levels of free 2,4-TDA, and 18 had detectable levels in their urine. Controls had no quantifiable levels, but 7 subjects had detectable levels. The biodegradative half-life of the polyurethane foam was estimated to be 2 years. A risk assessment using the cancer potency estimate calculated by the FDA from rat data and the National Academy of Sciences methodology provided a theoretical lifetime risk of approximately one in one million. It was concluded that the polyurethane foam cover on the Même and Replicon breast implants biodegrades. The risk assessment of approximately one in one million derived from this study strengthens earlier conclusions by the Health Protection Branch (Canada) that there is no significant risk of cancer from exposure to the 2,4-TDA formed from this biodegradation.

Abstract: In this paper we present our experiences with the cleaning of Web client and proxy usage logs, based on a long-term browsing study with 25 participants. A detailed clickstream log, recorded using a Web intermediary, was combined with a second log of user interface actions, which was captured by a modified Firefox browser for a subset of the participants. The consolidated data from both records revealed many page requests that were not directly related to user actions. For participants who had no ad-filtering system installed, these artifacts made up one third of all transferred Web pages. Three major reasons could be identified: HTML Frames and iFrames, advertisements, and automatic page reloads. The experiences made during the data cleaning process might help other researchers to choose adequate filtering methods for their data.

Abstract: This paper presents results of a long-term client-side Web usage study, updating previous studies that range in age from five to ten years. We focus on three aspects of Web navigation: changes in the distribution of navigation actions, speed of navigation and within-page navigation. “Navigation actions��? corresponding to users’ individual page requests are discussed by type. We reconfirm links to be the most important navigation element, while backtracking has lost more than half of its previously reported share and form submission has become far more common. Changes of the Web and the browser interfaces are candidates for causing these changes. Analyzing the time users stayed on pages, we confirm Web navigation to be a rapidly interactive activity. A breakdown of page characteristics shows that users often do not take the time to read the available text or consider all links. The performance of the Web is analyzed and reassessed against the resulting requirements. Finally, habits of within-page navigation are presented. Although most selected hyperlinks are located in the top left corner of the screen, in nearly a quarter of all cases people choose links that require scrolling. We analyzed the available browser real estate to gain insights for the design of non-scrolling Web pages.

16. Manganese‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) of mouse brain development

Abstract: Given the importance of genetically modified mice in studies of mammalian brain development and human congenital brain diseases, MRI has the potential to provide an efficient in vivo approach for analyzing mutant phenotypes in the early postnatal mouse brain. The combination of reduced tissue contrast at the high magnetic fields required for mice, and the changing cellular composition of the developing mouse brain make it difficult to optimize MRI contrast in neonatal mouse imaging. We have explored an easily implemented approach for contrast‐enhanced imaging, using systemically administered manganese (Mn) to reveal fine anatomical detail in T1‐weighted MR images of neonatal mouse brains. In particular, we demonstrate the utility of this Mn‐enhanced MRI (MEMRI) method for analyzing early postnatal patterning of the mouse cerebellum. Through comparisons with matched histological sections, we further show that MEMRI enhancement correlates qualitatively with granule cell density in the developing cerebellum, suggesting that the cerebellar enhancement is due to uptake of Mn in the granule neurons. Finally, variable cerebellar defects in mice with a conditional mutation in the Gbx2 gene were analyzed with MEMRI to demonstrate the utility of this method for mutant mouse phenotyping. Taken together, our results indicate that MEMRI provides an efficient and powerful in vivo method for analyzing neonatal brain development in normal and genetically engineered mice.

Abstract: Plant sterols and their saturated derivatives, known as stanols, reduce serum cholesterol when consumed in amounts of approximately 2 g per day. Stanol fatty acid esters have been developed as a highly fat-soluble form that may lower cholesterol more effectively than stanols. Stanol esters occur naturally in human diets, but at levels far below those known to lower cholesterol. The present study was conducted to assess the safety of stanol esters upon subchronic ingestion at levels comparable to or exceeding those recommended for lowering cholesterol. Two stanol fatty acid ester preparations, wood-derived stanol esters and vegetable oil-derived stanol esters, were fed to groups of 20 male and 20 female Wistar rats for 13 weeks, at dietary concentrations of 0, 0.2, 1, and 5% total stanols (equivalent to 0, 0.34, 1.68, and 8.39% wood-derived stanol esters and 0, 0.36, 1.78, and 8.91% vegetable oil-derived stanol esters). Both preparations were well tolerated as evidenced by the absence of clinical changes or major abnormalities in growth, food and water consumption, ophthalmoscopic findings, routine hematological and clinical chemistry values, renal concentrating ability, composition of the urine, appearance of the feces, estrus cycle length, organ weights, gross necropsy findings, and histopathological findings. Plasma cholesterol and phospholipids were slightly decreased in males fed the stanol esters. In both sexes, plasma levels of plant sterols were decreased whereas those of stanols tended to increase. Fecal excretion of sterols, including cholesterol, and stanols was markedly increased in the stanol ester groups. Compared to controls, male rats fed stanol esters showed somewhat lower liver weights and more pronounced glycogen depletion. These hepatic changes were considered to reflect an altered nutritional condition and not a pathological condition. Plasma levels of vitamin E, vitamin K1, and, to a lesser extent, vitamin D were decreased in males and females fed the high-dose diets. Hepatic levels of vitamins E and D showed similar changes (vitamin K1 in the liver was not determined). For both preparations, the mid-dose level (1% total stanols in the diet) was a no-observed-adverse-effect level. This dietary level provided approximately 0.5 g total stanols/kg body wt/day.

Abstract: On October 9, 1993, observations were made from the National Center for Atmospheric Research Electra aircraft during a flight from Maui, Hawaii, toward a low-pressure system NW of the island, a flight of 7 hours in total. The leading edge (wall) of a bright airglow layer was observed 900 km NW of Maui at 0815 UT, which was traveling at 75 m s−1 toward the SE, reaching Haleakala, Maui, about 3.25 hours later [see Swenson and Espy, 1995]. An intriguing feature associated with the event was the large increase in the mesospheric Na column density at the wall (∼180%). The enhancement was distributed over a broad region of altitude and was accompanied by significant perturbations in the Meinel (OH) and Na D line airglow emission intensities, as well as the temperature. This paper describes an investigation of the combined measurements from the aircraft and at Haleakala, including an analysis of the event using a gravity wave dynamic model. The modeled atmospheric variations associated with the leading edge of the “wall” wave are then applied to models of the neutral and ionic chemistry of sodium in order to establish whether the enhancement was caused by the release of atomic Na from a local reservoir species, as opposed to redistribution by horizontal convection. The most likely explanation for the Na release was the neutralization of Na+ ions in a sporadic E layer that was first transported downward by a large amplitude (≈10%) atmospheric gravity wave and then vertically mixed as the wave pushed the atmosphere into a super adiabatic state with associated convective instabilities and overturning.

Abstract: Studies with minority ethnic communities worldwide reveal important differences in the content of beliefs about cancer and attitudes towards screening. Current initiatives in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening highlight the importance of identifying any illness-specific beliefs that might influence participation rates within the targeted age-range. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 Italian-Australians aged between 50 and 78 years, living in Adelaide, South Australia. Qualitative data from the interviews were analysed using framework analysis. Participants articulated specific beliefs about the nature of cancer, risk factors, prevention possibilities, and variety of potential barriers and benefits to faecal occult blood testing (FOBT). Although participants’ beliefs overlapped with conventional medical models of cancer, the results also demonstrated the presence of specific cultural perceptions that might influence FOBT participation. Our results suggest that models used to inform communication about cancer need to be sensitive to culture specific concerns. Within the context of the older Italian-Australian community, there is a suggestion that self and response efficacy may be serious barriers to screening behavior and that bi-lingual, verbal delivery of information may be the most effective mode of communication to increase screening participation.

Abstract: Proximal–distal outgrowth of the vertebrate limb bud is regulated by the apical ectodermal ridge (AER), which forms at an invariant position along the dorsal–ventral (D/V) axis of the embryo. We have studied the genetic and cellular events that regulate AER formation in the mouse. In contrast to implications from previous studies in chick, we identified two distinct lineage boundaries in mouse ectoderm prior to limb bud outgrowth using a Cre/loxP-based fate-mapping approach and a novel retroviral cell-labeling technique. One border is transient and at the limit of expression of the ventral gene En1, which corresponds to the D/V midline of the AER, and the second border corresponds to the dorsal AER margin. Labeling of AER precursors using an inducible Cre showed that not all cells that initially express AER genes form the AER, indicating that signaling is required to maintain an AER phenotype. Misexpression of En1 at moderate levels specifically in the dorsal AER of transgenic mice was found to produce dorsally shifted AER fragments, whereas high levels of En1 abolished AER formation. In both cases, the dorsal gene Wnt7a was repressed in cells adjacent to the En1-expressing cells, demonstrating that signaling regulated by EN1 occurs across the D/V border. Abstract: Beat induction, the means by which humans listen to music and perceive a steady pulse, is achieved via a perceptualand cognitive process. Computationally modelling this phenomenon is an open problem, especially when processing expressive shaping of the music such as tempo change.To meet this challenge we propose Adaptive Frequency Neural Networks (AFNNs), an extension of Gradient Frequency Neural Networks (GFNNs).GFNNs are based on neurodynamic models and have been applied successfully to a range of difficult music perception problems including those with syncopated and polyrhythmic stimuli. AFNNs extend GFNNs by applying a Hebbian learning rule to the oscillator frequencies. Thus the frequencies in an AFNN adapt to the stimulus through an attraction to local areas of resonance, and allow for a great dimensionality reduction in the network.Where previous work with GFNNs has focused on frequency and amplitude responses, we also consider phase information as critical for pulse perception. Evaluating the time-based output, we find significantly improved re-sponses of AFNNs compared to GFNNs to stimuli with both steady and varying pulse frequencies. This leads us to believe that AFNNs could replace the linear filtering methods commonly used in beat tracking and tempo estimationsystems, and lead to more accurate methods.

Abstract: Gastroenterologists should be able to refer patients directly to psychologists with full Medicare reimbursement. Psychological comorbidities are frequently seen in patients with gastrointestinal conditions. However, time pressure and lack of expertise in non-medical therapies of psychological problems prevent gastroenterologists from initiating psychological treatment although such treatment may improve patients’ outcomes and reduce health-care utilization. Psychologists are needed as part of the multidisciplinary team in gastroenterology clinics in Australia to take the leading role in the psychological management of those patients by contributing to screening, faster diagnosis and treatment of depression and anxiety disorders in particular. 39. Music Genre Classification: A Multilinear Approach

Abstract: In this paper, music genre classification is addressed in a multilinear perspective. Inspired by a model of auditory cortical processing, multiscale spectro-temporal modulation features are extracted. Such spectro-temporal modulation features have been successfully used in various content- based audio classification tasks recently, but not yet in music genre classification. Each recording is represented by a third-order feature tensor generated by the auditory model. Thus, the ensemble of recordings is represented by a fourth-order data tensor created by stacking the third-order feature tensors associated to the recordings. To handle large data tensors and derive compact feature vectors suitable for classification, three multilinear subspace techniques are examined, namely the Non-Negative Tensor Factorization (NTF), the High-Order Singular Value Decomposition (HOSVD), and the Multilinear Principal Component Analysis (MPCA). Classification is performed by a Support Vector Machine. Stratified cross-validation tests on the GTZAN dataset and the ISMIR 2004 Genre one demonstrate the advantages of NTF and HOSVD versus MPCA. The best accuracies obtained by the proposed multilinear approach is comparable with those achieved by state-of-the-art music genre classification algorithms.

Abstract: The act of naming, where sign and the signified are coupled as an act of touching, establishes the foundations for the meaningful use of language. The computer, a language machine, possesses the capacity to input sensory data from the physical environment where signification occurs. To design a computationally extended sensory environment with intuitive gestural interaction will necessarily then have touch as a foundational factor. The universal element in such systems is language; the specific is the context of place, a space where the significating action of touch occurs.
