10.1002/polb.23555 Hyperstar polymers (HSPs) with hyperbranched aromatic polyester core and arms consisting of block copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) have been used as polymeric modifiers in cycloaliphatic epoxy-anhydride formulations catalyzed with tertiary amines, with the purpose of enhancing the impact strength of the resulting materials without compromising other thermal and mechanical properties.> In this work, the effect of these polymeric modifiers on the curing kinetics, processing, thermal-mechanical properties and thermal stability has been studied using thermal analysis techniques such as DSC, TMA, DMA, and TGA. The morphology of the cured materials has been analyzed with SEM. The curing kinetics has been analyzed by isoconversional procedures and phenomenological kinetic models taking into account the vitrification during curing, and the degradation kinetics has been analyzed by means of isoconversional procedures, summarizing the results in a time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram. The results show that HSPs participate in the crosslinking process due to the presence of reactive groups, without compromising significantly their thermal-mechanical properties. The modified materials show a potential toughness enhancement produced by the formation of a nano-grained morphology. The TTT diagram is shown to be a useful tool for the optimization of the curing schedule in terms of curing completion and safe processing window, as well as for defining storage stability conditions.

The Monte Cristo area of the Cache National Forest has consistently supported a heavy pocket gopher infestation for many years. In 1957, and several succeeding years, infested range was treated with poisoned grain for pocket gopher control. Nearby range (also infested) was no t treated. Thus, gopher- control l ed range became available for comparative study, with period s of successive annual control of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years. Within each of these areas (designated as treatments) were located two study sites in 1961 and three in 1962. Within each study site were three sample areas, and just out side each study site were two trap blocks. Half-acre trap blocks were saturated with snap t raps for 3- consecutive days to give a 3-day population index ; this was converted to population per acre by treatments for use with regression analysis. Mound and cast counts, which have been widely used as indicators of the relative abundance of gophers were made on the 1-acre sample areas of each treatment. Within these sample areas line-plot transects were used to obtain in format ion on perennial plant numbers and yield, annual plant abundance, and "bulbed plant" abundance.

The organophosphate compound recently registered for pocket gopher control under the trade name Gophacide (DRC-714) is described and characterized according to mode of action, toxicity, and efficacy. Formulations on grain at 0.1% and 0.2% give good bait acceptance and achieve high mortality in field tests on all gopher species except the Mexican pocket gopher. It is superior to common rodenticides for gopher control, with less hazard to nontarget animals than some other rodenticides, and it has slower action and available antidotes. It shows promise for controlling meadow mice, house mice, kangaroo rats, and pine voles. While black-tailed jackrabbits are highly susceptible to the compound, it presents a secondary hazard to eagles and large hawks.

Eastern coyotes (Canis latrans var.) may have appeared in Maine as early as 1936; their range now includes most of eight western counties and eastward extensions into central and northwestern Maine. Ninety coyotes, killed in 1968-73, were examined and new distribution records are given. Skull and tooth characteristics of Maine coyotes tended to be intermediate to those of dogs and western coyotes. Adult males averaged 15.8 kg and females 13.7 kg; the mean body measurements were 1251 : 363 : 209 and 116 mm for males and 1179: 343 : 197 and 113 mm for females. Carrion, snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus), small mammals, and miscellaneous items composed most of the stomach contents of 51 coyotes killed in the fall and early winter. Identification of Maine canids is discussed. J. WILDL. MANAGE. 38(3):447-454 Aldous (1939) described 12 wild canids captured in central Penobscot County. Some of these were identified as coyotes, some as dogs, and others as hybrid offspring (coydogs) of dogs and coyotes. From 1936 to 1944 the Unit (Maine Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit) received 35 additional canids from various localities and all but two were identified as dogs; one from Franklin County closely resembled a coyote and one from Kennebec County was identified as a coyote-dog hybrid by H. H. T. Jackson of the Biological Survey. Sixteen more canids were killed and sent to the Unit for identification between 1944 and 1953; 15 of these were dogs but one was identified as a dog-coyote cross by H. F. Quick and J. M. Murray of the University of Maine. We have little information on the occurrence of coyotelike animals between 1953 and 1962, because of incomplete records; however, some unidentified canids were submitted from Waldo County where they were reported to be numerous. One canid killed in 1961 in Somerset County was identified as C. latrans thamnos by R. H. Manville of the U. S. National Museum (Carson 1962). For the period of 1962 to mid-1968, we could find no record that canids had been submitted to the Unit. The above canids posed taxonomic problems. The criteria useful for differentiating western canids were applied to canids of New England. This application caused confusion because of phenotypic and behavioral changes in coyotes resulting from hybridization and perhaps natural selection. Moreover, the larger New England animals varied more than did western coyotes. Based on findings of recent studies, the wild canids (except for foxes) received by Unit personnel since mid-1968, have quite clearly been coyotes or dogs and not hybrids of these animals-although individual characters were frequently of doubtful specific affinity. International audience; To mimic organelles and cells and to construct next-generation therapeutics, asymmetric functionalization and location of proteins for artificial vesicles is thoroughly needed to emphasize the complex interplay of biological units and systems through spatially separated and spatiotemporal controlled actions, release, and communications. For the challenge of vesicle (= polymersome) construction, the membrane permeability and the location of the cargo are important key characteristics that determine their potential applications. Herein, an in situ and post loading process of avidin in pH-responsive and photo-cross-linked polymersomes is developed and characterized. First, loading efficiency, main location (inside, lumen, outside), and release of avidin under different conditions have been validated, including the pH-stable presence of avidin in polymersomes’ membrane outside and inside. This advantageous approach allows us to selectively functionalize the outer and inner membranes as well as the lumen with several bio(macro)molecules, generally suited for the construction of asymmetrically functionalized artificial organelles. In addition, a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect was used to study the permeability or uptake of the polymersome membrane against a broad range of biotinylated (macro)molecules (different typology, sizes, and shapes) under different conditions.
