We present analytic cooling and diffusion rates for a simplified model of coherent electron cooling (CEC), based on a proton energy kick at each turn. This model also allows to estimate analytically the rms value of electron beam density fluctuations in the "kicker" section. Having such analytic expressions should allow for better understanding of the CEC mechanism, and for a quicker analysis and optimization of main system parameters. High-gradient CW photo-injectors operating at high ac-celerating gradients promise to revolutionize many sci-ences and applications. They can establish the basis for super-bright monochromatic X-ray and gamma-ray sources, high luminosity hadron colliders, nuclear- waste transmutation or a new generation of microchip produc-tion. In this paper we report on our operation of a super-conducting RF electron gun with a record-high accelerat-ing gradient at the CsK2Sb photocathode (i.e. ~ 20 MV/m) generating a record-high bunch charge (i.e., 2 nC). An ampere class 20 MeV superconducting Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) is presently under commissioning at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). This facility enables testing of concepts relevant for high-energy coherent electron cooling, electron-ion colliders, and high repetition rate Free-Electron Lasers. The ERL will be capable of providing electron beams with sufficient quality to produce high repetition rate THz and X-ray radiation. When completed the SRF photoinjector will provide 2 MeV energy and 300 mA average beam current. The injector for the R&D ERL was installed in 2012, this includes a 704MHz SRF gun* with multi-alkali photocathode, cryo-system upgrade and a novel emittance preservation zigzag-like low energy merger system. We describe the design and major components of the R&D ERL injector then report the first experimental results and experiences learned in the first stage of beam commissioning of the BNL R&D ERL., Proceedings of the 5th Int. The 113 MHz superconducting gun is used an electron source for the coherent electron cooling experiment. The unique feature of the gun is that a photocathode is held at room temperature. It allowed to preserve the quantum efficiency of Cs2KSb cathode which is adversely affected by cryogenic temperatures. Relatively low frequency permitted fully realize the accelerating field gradient what in turn helps to achieve 10 nC charge and 0.3 microns normalized emittance.
