Malnutrition is a biggest problem throughout the world. In last some decades, human beings facing lot of infectious diseases too. Both problems are becoming serious for health and in the development of a nation. Both create low immunity among the populace of a boundary. Therefore, need to explore wild food plants having food and medicinal values. In this chapter, food and medicinal values of Indigofera cassioides are discussed to bring attention towards the wild nutraceutical for contemporary and upcoming future health care problems. A survey was done during 2019-2022 to collect the desired information and gathered information are presented in this chapter in the form of baseline data to make strategy with its value addition to better health and getting food security.

BACKGROUND: Vaccinium is one of the largest genera (ca. 500 species) of Ericaceae, well known for its edible and ornamental uses. Although there is certain karyological knowledge, information about genome size (GS) is scarce in the genus. OBJECTIVE: The main goal is providing GS data for several Vaccinium species with prevalence in Europe and Western Asia and analysing global GS variation in the genus, considering available data and phylogenetic context. METHODS: New GS assessments were obtained by flow cytometry and chromosome counts were verified. Phylogenetic analyses (using nuclear ITS, and chloroplastic matK and ndhF) were performed by Bayesian inference and reconstruction of ancestral GS by maximum parsimony. RESULTS: We obtained GS data for five Vaccinium species (13 populations). Three species are reported for the first time. Values (2C) ranged between 1.16-1.47 pg at the diploid (2n = 24) and between 3.13-3.16 pg at the tetraploid (2n = 48) levels. The five species here investigated have been placed and analysed in a reconstructed phylogenetic background (including 68 taxa). CONCLUSIONS: GS values of Vaccinium can be considered 'very small'. The preliminary reconstruction of ancestral GS would point to a reduction in Vaccinium, although more data is needed to establish global GS evolutionary trend in the genus.

The euhalophyte species Salicornia europaea is cultivated for oilseed and as a fodder crop in various parts of the world. In saline coastal environments it possesses great potential for the subsistence of the most disadvantaged farmers. We investigated the effect of salinity levels in irrigation water on the germination capacity, shoot biomass and seed productivity as well as diverse quality traits (nitrogen content in shoots and seeds and fatty acids, in seeds) and physiological traits (stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and ion content) of two accessions collected in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The three salinity levels tested were irrigation with fresh water, brackish water and sea water. In addition, a hypersaline condition was also tested for germination. The best germination rates were achieved with seeds exposed to fresh and brackish water, while imbibition with sea water decreased germination by half and hypersaline water inhibited it almost totally. However, the best irrigation regime in terms of biomass and seed yield involved brackish water. Moreover, rising salinity in the irrigation increased the stable isotope composition of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), together with the Na+ and K+ of shoots and seeds, and the lipid levels of seeds, while the total nitrogen content and the profile of major fatty acids of seeds did not change. Differences between the two ecotypes existed for growth and seed yield with the best ecotype exhibiting lower δ13C and higher K+ in both shoots and seeds, lower Na+ and higher 15N in shoots, and lower N in seeds, together with differences in major fatty acids. Physiological mechanisms behind the response to irrigation salinity and the ecotypic differences are discussed in terms of photosynthetic carbon and nitrogen metabolism.

We developed the educational purpose mobile application, named “Wild Flowers of Bukhansan National Park (version 1.0)”, aiming for easy identification of wildflowers for students and visitors in the park. When visitors find a flower or part of plant in the park, visitors can search for its name utilizing the pictures and characters provided in their own smartphone mobile devices or tablet PCs. The application provides pictures of wildflowers in the park and character-based searching system based on 12 diagnostic features (e.g., growth form, leaf arrangement, flower symmetry, petal color, petal number, sepal number, etc). We adopted the complete floristic survey of Chung and Lee (1962) and added species that we confirmed their distribution in the park during the development of this application. In summary, number of vascular plants in this park was estimated to be 428 taxa including 100 families, 280 genera, 327 species, 1 subspecies, 50 varieties, and 5 formas. We provided a total of 588 pictures representing 358 taxa and each taxon includes multiple pictures in many cases. Included identification quizzes can be an efficient educational tool as well as fun activity for students and visitors who are learning plant species in Korea. Our next step will include GPS function in the application for indicating visitor's location and for providing previously reported sites of the species that we interested in the map of the park. The future application which includes GPS function will be a valuable tool for the monitoring of rare plants, plant researches related to the climate changes, etc. We currently provide Korean iPhone version only, and English version and both of android versions will be serviced soon.

La relació que s'estableix entre la vegetació i la composició mineralògica del sòl ha fet que els geòlegs, quan busquen jaciments, es fixin, entre moltes altres dades, en les plantes que hi creixen. Stephen E. Haggerty i els seus col·laboradors, de la Universitat Internacional de Florida, als EUA, han descobert un tipus de palmera que creix únicament en indrets rics en diamants, en zones tropicals humides. La seva proposta, que recull la revista Economic Geology, és utilitzar aquesta correlació com un indicador per buscar nous jaciments, la qual cosa facilitaria la tasca i evitaria malmetre el medi ambient en prospeccions infructuoses.

38 p., tablas, gráf., Most Calligonum species are desert plants, characteristic of the Saharan bioclimatic region. All species karyologically analyzed until present have the basic chromosome number x = 9 and comprise diploids, triploids and tetraploids. The Tunisian flora comprises diploid Calligonum arich and C. azel, of restricted distribution, and the tetraploid C. comosum with wider distribution. Analyses of their karyotypes and polyploidisation-linked rDNA changes by orcein staining, fluorochrome banding with chromomycin A3 and fluorescent in situ hybridisation with 5S and 26S ribosomal DNA probes have been performed. We report the chromosome number for Calligonum arich (2n = 18) as well as the diploid level for C. comosum for the first time. Chromosome counts have also verified the earlier described tetraploid cytotype (2n = 36) of C. comosum. A general pattern of six GC-rich bands as well as two 35S sites and four 5S sites is described for Calligonum species at the diploid level although there is intraspecific variation regarding the site number in a second type of C. comosum, with one pair of 35S rDNA sites and two pairs of 5S rDNA sites. The tetraploid cytotype of C. comosum has undergone locus loss and genome downsizing. Genome size assessments confirmed previous data. Nonetheless, statistically significant differences were found depending on the type of tissue used for estimation. Measurements from seeds had always larger values than from leaves.
