Although the central role of classical mechanics in physics teacher education is undisputed, divergent interests and perspectives from different disciplinary cultures might exist when thinking about how to best support pre-service teachers' professional development. In this article, we report the results of an exploratory mind map study to investigate which classical mechanics topics are regarded essential for physics teacher education according to N = 29 experts from different physics disciplines. The participants’ mind maps were analyzed using a category system and frequency analysis was applied. The results hint at similarities and differences in terms of key topics to be addressed in physics teacher education on classical mechanics according to experts from different physics disciplines, e.g., in terms of the depth of mathematics considered relevant for physics teacher education.

10Be is an important isotope for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) because of the demand for cosmogenic radionuclide dating methods in the earth science and paleo-sciences community. At the iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Science (iThemba LABS) we implemented full suppression of the interfering isobar 10B using a silicon nitride foil-stack, utilizing the 2+ charge state for high efficiency. We demonstrate the performance of this newly established AMS system using standards and test samples. We further present the results of an inter-comparison between iThemba LABS and the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry/Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, on AMS samples prepared from purified quartz at the University of Vermont. The results for 10Be from the laboratories are in close agreement, fully consistent with cross-calibration between them. AMS results for 26Al are in similarly good agreement, demonstrating the performance and accuracy of iThemba LABS for the most commonly measured in situ produced cosmogenic nuclides.

INTRODUCTION: Despite all our dreams and enthusiasm, the essential question of whether our species can ever live permanently in space remains unanswered. The 1975 NASA Ames Design Study on Space Settlements demonstrated how human physiology constrains and determines human habitat design in space. Our scientific understanding about the risks of and standards for microgravity (and rotation rate if centrifugally generated), ionizing radiation, and atmosphere pressure and composition, remains inadequate a half century later. In addition, there are newly recognized physiological challenges to living safely in space, including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), extravascular hemolytic anemia, and other factors that affect every human cell and organ system. A comprehensive review was conducted to establish what we have learned and what is still required to know about the pathophysiology of long-term space travel and living in space since my first report in 1978. Dynamic contrast-enhanced CT using a lower-viscosity contrast agent in combination with tracer-kinetic analysis by the steepest-slope model improves pulmonary blood flow measurements and assessment of regional distributions of lung perfusion.

BackgroundObservational studies indicate a relationship between vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D; 25OHD) deficiency and the development of internalising disorders, especially depression. However, causal inference approaches (e.g. Mendelian randomisation) did not confirm this relationship. Findings from biobehavioural research suggests that new insights are revealed when focusing on psychopathological dimensions rather than on clinical diagnoses. This study provides further evidence on the relationship between 25OHD and the internalising dimension.AimsThis investigation aimed at examining the causality between 25OHD and internalising disorders including a common internalising factor.MethodWe performed a two-sample Mendelian randomisation using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data for 25OHD (417 580 participants), major depressive disorder (45 591 cases; 97 674 controls), anxiety (5580 cases; 11 730 controls), post-traumatic stress disorder (12 080 cases; 33 446 controls), panic disorder (2248 cases; 7992 controls), obsessive–compulsive disorder (2688 cases; 7037 controls) and anorexia nervosa (16 992 cases; 55 525 controls). GWAS results of the internalising phenotypes were combined to a common factor representing the internalising dimension. We performed several complementary analyses to reduce the risk of pleiotropy and used a second 25OHD GWAS for replication.ResultsWe found no causal relationship between 25OHD and any of the internalising phenotypes studied, nor with the common internalising factor. Several pleiotropy-robust methods corroborated the null association.ConclusionsFollowing current transdiagnostic approaches to investigate mental disorders, our results focused on the shared genetic basis between different internalising phenotypes and provide no evidence for an effect of 25OHD on the internalising dimension.

We analyse the competitive effects of the centralised sale of football media rights in Europe, focusing on the “Big Five” countries (England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain). Contrary to the recent findings of European competition authorities, we consider that there are arguments in favour of the relevant market for domestic media rights being club- or even match-specific. This raises the question of what competition is restricted by the centralised sale if the rights on offer do not compete. If the media rights of different clubs are indeed complementary and because of the potential efficiency gains from bundling, we conclude that the centralised sale of media rights is unlikely to be anticompetitive and may have procompetitive effects. We further show that under a club or match-specific market definition, a no-single-buyer rule likely reduces the benefits from the centralised sale and may be to the detriment of consumers.

Este material diz respeito a uma entrevista concedida pelo Professor Doutor Alexandre Fernandez Vaz sobre a infância em Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) e a importância da experiência para a constituição da subjetividade. Além do mais, focalizou questões sobre a infância, questões étnicas, “raciais” e o papel do adulto (professor/a da educação infantil) nessas relações, pautadas no pensamento do filósofo judeu alemão. Foi dividida em três blocos distribuídos da seguinte forma: no primeiro foram três questões; no segundo mais três e no último apenas uma questão com percepções e comentários gerais do entrevistado e do/as entrevistador/as.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a ubiquitous pollutant, raises environmental health concerns due to induction of bone toxicity in the unexposed offspring. Exposure of F0 ancestor medaka (Oryzias latipes) to 1 µg/L BaP for 21 days causes reduced vertebral bone thickness in the unexposed F3 male offspring. To reveal the inherited modifications, osteoblast (OB) abundance and molecular signaling pathways of transgenerational BaP-induced bone thinning were assessed. Histomorphometric analysis showed a reduction in OB abundance. Analyses of the miRNA and mRNA transcriptomes revealed the dysregulation of Wnt signaling (frzb/ola-miR-1-3p, sfrp5/ola-miR-96-5p/miR-455-5p) and bone morphogenetic protein (Bmp) signaling (bmp3/ola-miR-96-5p/miR-181b-5p/miR-199a-5p/miR-205-5p/miR-455-5p). Both pathways are major indicators of impaired bone formation, while the altered Rank signaling in osteoclasts (c-fos/miR-205-5p) suggests a potentially augmented bone resorption. Interestingly, a typical BaP-responsive pathway, the Nrf2-mediated oxidative stress response (gst/ola-miR-181b-5p/miR-199a-5p/miR-205), was also affected. Moreover, mRNA levels of epigenetic modification enzymes (e.g., hdac6, hdac7, kdm5b) were found dysregulated. The findings indicated that epigenetic factors (e.g., miRNAs, histone modifications) may directly regulate the expression of genes associated with transgenerational BaP bone toxicity and warrants further studies. The identified candidate genes and miRNAs may serve as potential biomarkers for BaP-induced bone disease and as indicators of historic exposures in wild fish for conservation purposes.

OBJECTIVE Anatomical taxonomy is a practical tool to successfully guide clinical decision-making for patients with brain arteriovenous malformations and brainstem cavernous malformations (CMs). Deep cerebral CMs are complex, difficult to access, and highly variable in size, shape, and position. The authors propose a novel taxonomic system for deep CMs in the thalamus based on clinical presentation (syndromes) and anatomical location (identified on MRI). METHODS The taxonomic system was developed and applied to an extensive 2-surgeon experience from 2001 through 2019. Deep CMs involving the thalamus were identified. These CMs were subtyped on the basis of the predominant surface presentation identified on preoperative MRI. Six subtypes among 75 thalamic CMs were defined: anterior (7/75, 9%), medial (22/75, 29%), lateral (10/75, 13%), choroidal (9/75, 12%), pulvinar (19/75, 25%), and geniculate (8/75, 11%). Neurological outcomes were assessed using modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores. A postoperative score ≤ 2 was defined as a favorable outcome and > 2 as a poor outcome. Clinical and surgical characteristics and neurological outcomes were compared among subtypes. RESULTS Seventy-five patients underwent resection of thalamic CMs and had clinical and radiological data available. Their mean age was 40.9 (SD 15.2) years. Each thalamic CM subtype was associated with a recognizable constellation of neurological symptoms. The common symptoms were severe or worsening headaches (30/75, 40%), hemiparesis (27/75, 36%), hemianesthesia (21/75, 28%), blurred vision (14/75, 19%), and hydrocephalus (9/75, 12%). The thalamic CM subtype determined the selection of surgical approach. A single approach was associated with each subtype for most patients. The main exception to this paradigm was that in the surgeons’ early experience, pulvinar CMs were resected through a superior parietal lobule–transatrial approach (4/19, 21%), which later evolved to the paramedian supracerebellar-infratentorial approach (12/19, 63%). Relative outcomes implied by mRS scores were unchanged or improved in most patients (61/66, 92%) postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms the authors’ hypothesis that this taxonomy for thalamic CMs can meaningfully guide the selection of surgical approach and resection strategy. The proposed taxonomy can increase diagnostic acumen at the patient bedside, help identify optimal surgical approaches, enhance the clarity of clinical communications and publications, and improve patient outcomes.

A pictorial horoscope in a late Ptolemaic papyrus ( P.Kramer 17) may be assigned more precisely to late 56 or early 55 BC based on the preserved astronomical data, making it the earliest such representation from Egypt. Instead of a copy for presentation to a client, the papyrus is rather a draft for the depiction of a zodiac, probably in a funerary monument, where it would have represented the planetary positions at the time of birth of the person commemorated. The central pictorial element can be identified as a dog, and contextualized in a complex tradition of Egyptian and Greek concepts and iconography related to Sirius-Sothis, and the beginning of the new year.

Transition metal carbides, especially Mo2C, are praised to be efficient electrocatalysts to reduce CO2 to valuable hydrocarbons. However, on Mo2C in an aqueous electrolyte, exclusively the competing hydrogen evolution reaction takes place, and this discrepancy to theory was traced back to the formation of a thin oxide layer at the electrode surface. Here, we study the CO2 reduction activity at Mo2C in a non-aqueous electrolyte to avoid such passivation and to determine products and the CO2 reduction reaction pathway. We find a tendency of CO2 to reduce to carbon monoxide. This process is inevitably coupled with the decomposition of acetonitrile to a 3-aminocrotonitrile anion. Furthermore, a unique behavior of the non-aqueous acetonitrile electrolyte is found, where the electrolyte, instead of the electrocatalyst, governs the catalytic selectivity of the CO2 reduction. This is evidenced by in situ electrochemical infrared spectroscopy on different electrocatalysts as well as by density functional theory calculations.

One of the enabling technologies of Industry 4.0 is augmented reality. Augmented reality is currently supported on mobile devices and often does not require costly equipment, allowing it to expand quickly across industries such as entertainment and healthcare. Studies in education demonstrate that augmented reality can improve conceptual comprehension and learning in STEM fields and that educational organizations and teachers support its use. However, augmented reality is still used in only a few educational establishments. There have been few studies on the topic, raising concerns such as: what are the barriers to broader adoption of this technology? Understanding the issues better would allow educational organizations and instructors to take action to mitigate them. This study aims to identify and categorize the barriers, difficulties, and challenges for the adoption of augmented reality in education. The investigation was conducted in two stages: first, the barriers mentioned in 28 papers published in the Science Direct, Scielo, and Scopus databases were preliminary categorized, and then this categorization was validated by an interdisciplinary focus group of experts in education and industry 4.0. We identified seven categories as barriers to the adoption of augmented reality in education: technical, adoption, usability and user interaction, learning, pedagogical, financial, and technological nature. Our results contribute to mitigate these barriers and encourage actions to increase the potential of augmented reality in education.

Com a gravidade da pandemia do COVID-19, estudos foram desenvolvidos para analisar as sequelas do vírus no organismo. A Sociedade Espanhola de Neurologia apontou o Acidente Vascular Cerebral (AVC) isquêmico, como segunda manifestação neurológica mais frequente nos pacientes do coronavírus. O AVC é uma das principais causas de incapacidade a longo prazo. Os sobreviventes do AVC podem ter sequelas neurológicas, a exemplo da afasia, que é um distúrbio da linguagem, onde a pessoa pode ter perda parcial ou total da capacidade de comunicação. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar os impactos da pandemia para as pessoas com afasia e o uso da tecnologia. Como estratégia desta pesquisa, realizamos revisão sistemática entre abril e maio de 2021, ainda no período de pandemia e isolamento social. Examinamos estudos publicados, em bases de conhecimento científico, que tivessem relação com a afasia, COVID, reabilitação e tecnologia. Destacamos o distanciamento social, causado pela pandemia, como o elemento impulsionador que reduziu o atendimento em centros de reabilitação; além disso, percebemos que os profissionais de fonoaudiologia buscaram utilizar recursos tecnológicos na tentativa de manter a rotina terapêutica, com isso houve o deslocamento das sessões de reabilitação para o formato online, por videoconferências. Por fim, concluímos que um dos principais desafios é conectar novas tecnologias, como apoio, à reabilitação da afasia, que precisam ser acessíveis ao ambiente clínico e hospitalar. Ferramentas tecnológicas devem auxiliar o tratamento e a avaliação do potencial de recuperação.

Nanofibras de ZnO foram produzidas a partir de precursores à base de poli(álcool vinílico) (PVA) e acetato de zinco (AcZn) obtidos por eletrofiação, nas proporções mássicas de PVA/AcZn 1:1; 2:1 e 4:1, e posterior calcinação. Bandas características da ligação Zn-O e de transições eletrônicas do ZnO foram detectadas nos espectros de infravermelho (FTIR) e absorção fotoacústica (PAS) das nanofibras. Picos cristalinos característicos da estrutura wurtzita e fase hexagonal do ZnO foram detectados nos difratogramas de raios-X (DRX) das amostras produzidas. Os valores de energia de gap (Eg) estimados para as nanofibras de ZnO produzidas após calcinação dos precursores PVA/AcZn 1:1; 2:1 e 4:1 foram de 2,95; 3,15 e 3,02 eV, respectivamente, e a área específica (SBET) destas respectivas amostras foi de 25,26 m²/g; 20,95 m²/g e 23,79 m²/g. As imagens de MEV e MET das amostras de ZnO revelaram que após calcinação, a morfologia de fibra foi mantida apenas para aquelas produzidas a partir dos nanofios precursores de PVA/AcZn 1:1 e 4:1. Todas as amostras de ZnO exibiram excelente desempenho fotocatalítico, degradando cerca de 99% do corante Azul de Metileno, em ambos pH 7,0 e 9,0, e após 240 minutos de irradiação UV-visível.

BACKGROUND: Screening for islet autoantibodies in children and adolescents identifies individuals who will later develop type 1 diabetes, allowing patient and family education to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis at onset and to enable consideration of preventive therapies. We aimed to assess whether islet autoantibody screening is effective for predicting type 1 diabetes in adolescents aged 10−18 years with an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Data were harmonised from prospective studies from Finland (the Diabetes Prediction and Prevention study), Germany (the BABYDIAB study), and the USA (Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young and the Diabetes Evaluation in Washington study). Autoantibodies against insulin, glutamic acid decarboxylase, and insulinoma-associated protein 2 were measured at each follow-up visit. Children who were lost to follow-up or diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before 10 years of age were excluded. Inverse probability censoring weighting was used to include data from remaining participants. Sensitivity and the positive predictive value of these autoantibodies, tested at one or two ages, to predict type 1 diabetes by the age of 18 years were the main outcomes. FINDINGS: Of 20 303 children with an increased type 1 diabetes risk, 8682 were included for the analysis with inverse probability censoring weighting. 1890 were followed up to 18 years of age or developed type 1 diabetes between the ages of 10 years and 18 years, and their median follow-up was 18·3 years (IQR 14·5–20·3). 442 (23·4%) of 1890 adolescents were positive for at least one islet autoantibody, and 262 (13·9%) developed type 1 diabetes. Time from seroconversion to diabetes diagnosis increased by 0·64 years (95% CI 0·34–0·95) for each 1-year increment of diagnosis age (Pearson’s correlation coefficient 0·88, 95% CI 0·50–0·97, p=0·0020). The median interval between the last prediagnostic sample and diagnosis was 0·3 years (IQR 0·1–1·3) in the 227 participants who were autoantibody positive and 6·8 years (1·6–9·9) for the 35 who were autoantibody negative. Single screening at the age of 10 years was 90% (95% CI 86–95) sensitive, with a positive predictive value of 66% (60–72) for clinical diabetes. Screening at two ages (10 years and 14 years) increased sensitivity to 93% (95% CI 89–97) but lowered the positive predictive value to 55% (49–60). INTERPRETATION: Screening of adolescents at risk for type 1 diabetes only once at 10 years of age for islet autoantibodies was highly effective to detect type 1 diabetes by the age of 18 years, which in turn could enable prevention of diabetic ketoacidosis and participation in secondary prevention trials. Many types of plant-based materials have been investigated as fat replacers or meat extenders in beef patties and meatballs, including cereal and pulse flours as well as isolated plant proteins. Previously, excess steam jet cooking and drum drying of pulse flours were shown to impart potentially useful properties as food ingredients. In this study, pinto bean flour was jet-cooked and drum-dried (JC-DD) and compared with raw pinto bean flour when added to ground beef patties. The finely milled flours were mixed with ground beef at levels of 6, 12, and 18% along with equal amounts of water. The effects of jet cooking and drum drying on the flour included complete breakdown of starch granules, greatly reduced viscosity upon heating in water, and substantial reduction of several volatile beany flavor components. The highest level of JC-DD flour resulted in the highest cooked patty weight, moisture content, and diameter and the lowest cooking time, springiness, and fat content. There were significant color changes in both raw and cooked beef patties to which pinto bean flour was added, but they were not large due to the native color of bean seed coats. Texture analysis revealed that addition of JC-DD flour to the meat resulted in a greater degree of tenderizing compared to the raw flour. The experiments indicate that further investigation of different flour/water ratios and different pulse types might lead to higher substitution levels. Novelty Impact Statement. The use of pulse flour as a meat extender was investigated with the novel approach of processing the pulse flour by excess steam jet cooking and drum drying. Comparison of the effects of raw and jet-cooked flour on the properties of cooked ground beef patties revealed advantages of jet cooking the flour including higher cooked patty weight, moisture content, and diameter and a greater degree of tenderizing.

The thermal management of the vehicular module is key to the design of efficient wireless power transfer systems. In order to predict the thermal behavior by simulation, the mutual interaction of the electromagnetic and thermal fields must be taken into account. This multiphysical coupling leads to extensive computational effort. One approach to reduce the complexity by limiting the interdependencies between the domains is one-way coupling. This paper examined the applicability of one-way and two-way coupling for the prediction of the thermal management of an exemplary vehicular wireless power transfer module. The electromagnetic–thermal behavior of the proposed module was systematically studied by experiments and simulations on the component and module level. The performed studies showed that both simulation approaches accurately capture the transient thermal behavior of the coil and ferrites on the component level, whereas the one-way coupled simulation underpredicts the power losses caused by shielding by more than 20%, leading to a steady-state temperature difference of 15 K. As a result, on the module level, the two-way coupled simulation model provides a more accurate representation of the electromagnetic–thermal behavior of the proposed car pad module. Therefore, the authors recommend using a two-way coupling approach for the thermal dimensioning of wireless power transfer modules for electric vehicles.

To design effective immunomodulatory implants, innate immune cell interactions at the surface of biomaterials need to be controlled and understood. The architectural design freedom of two-photon polymerization is used to produce arrays of surface-mounted, geometrically diverse 3D polymer objects. This reveals the importance of the interplay between architecture and materials chemistry in determining human macrophage fate in vitro. The ChemoArchiChip identifies key structure-function relationships and design rules from machine learning models to build a mechanistic understanding of cell attachment and polarization. Object shape, vertex/cone angle, and size are key drivers of attachment. Particular shapes are found to heavily modulate pro- or anti-inflammatory cell polarization, while triangular pyramids drastically reduce or even eliminate attachment. Caveola-dependent endocytosis is a principal mechanism by which cells respond to objects with sharp points; i.e., low vertex/cone angles. The discovery of these putative design rules points to surfaces decorated with architectures to augment implant performance.

Introduction: Even though randomized controlled trials could not show a significant survival benefit for the use of neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST), it is increasingly recommended for patients with clinically node-positive breast cancer due to its implications on prognosis, locoregional downstaging and response-driven adjuvant systemic therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the need for international standardization of treatment recommendations by evaluating clinical practice heterogeneity in use of NST for patients with clinically node-positive breast cancer in Europe. Methods: The study was preplanned in the international multicenter phase-III OPBC-03/TAXIS trial (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03513614) after randomization of the first 500 patients with clinically node-positive breast cancer who underwent axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) or axillary radiation (ART) without ALND after tailored axillary surgery (TAS) in the context of extended regional nodal irradiation. Clinically node-positive breast cancer was defined by confirmed nodal disease at the time of initial diagnosis; in case of neoadjuvant therapy, residual nodal disease was mandatory. Investigators were encouraged to enroll all eligible patients consecutively. However, TAXIS is unique inasmuch as its pragmatic design allows both the neoadjuvant and adjuvant setting according to the preferences of the treating physicians and institutions and thus provides an excellent opportunity to study patterns and trends in use of NST in patients with clinically positive nodes in Europe. Results: A total of 500 patients with a median age of 57 years (IQR: 48-69 years) were included at 44 breast centers in 6 European countries from August 2018 to June 2022. Subtype was hormone receptor (HR) positive (+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) negative (-) in 393 (80.0%), HR+/HER2+ in 52 (10.6%), HR-/HER2+ in 5 (1.0%) and HR-/HER2- in 34 (6.9%) patients. The rate of patients undergoing NST was 31.4% with a significant upward trend over time during the study period (from 20.0% in 2018 to 38.1% in 2022; p=0.044). The use of NST varied significantly by country (p=< 0.001) and by site (p=0.015). For patients with clinical AJCC tumor stage II and III, the rates of patients undergoing NST in Switzerland were 26.5% (18 of 68) and 35.9% (92 of 256), in Germany 22.2% (2 of 9) and 30.4% (7 of 23), in Austria 50% (7 of 14) and 60% (9 of 15) and in Hungary 0% (0 of 15) and 20.7% (18 of 87), respectively (p=0.019 and 0.004). Large differences by country were found for ER+/HER2- breast cancer, ranging from 13.1% (11 of 84) in Hungary to 47.8% (11 of 23) in Austria (p=0.007). Within Switzerland, which was the country with most included patients (328 of 500) and participating sites (n=25), the rate of patients undergoing NST for ER+/HER2- breast cancer varied considerably by site, ranging from 10% (2 of 20) to 50% (11 of 22). Discussion: This study revealed substantial heterogeneity in clinical practice in Europe, indicating the need for development of and adherence to consistent guidelines to standardize the international use of NST.
