Abstract

The fundamental nature of Dark Matter is a central theme of the Snowmass 2021 process, extending across all Frontiers. In the last decade, advances in detector technology, analysis techniques and theoretical modeling have enabled a new generation of experiments and searches while broadening the types of candidates we can pursue. Over the next decade, there is great potential for discoveries that would transform our understanding of dark matter. In the following, we outline a road map for discovery developed in collaboration among the Frontiers. A strong portfolio of experiments that delves deep, searches wide, and harnesses the complementarity between techniques is key to tackling this complicated problem, requiring expertise, results, and planning from all Frontiers of the Snowmass 2021 process., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Two of the most pressing questions in physics are the microscopic nature of the dark matter that comprises 84% of the mass in the Universe and the absence of a neutron electric dipole moment. These questions would be resolved by the existence of a hypothetical particle known as the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion. In this work, we probe the hypothesis that axions constitute dark matter, using the ABRACADABRA-10cm experiment in a broadband configuration, with world-leading sensitivity. We find no significant evidence for axions, and we present 95% upper limits on the axion-photon coupling down to the world-leading level g_{aγγ}

5. KamLAND2-Zen: Design and status

Abstract

The KamLAND-Zen program has recently set the worlds most stringent limit on neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), being the first experiment excluding a half-life less than 10$^{26}$ years at the 90% C.L. The next push will be to upgrade the detector hardware, increase the amount of dissolved xenon gas, and update the readout system in order to probe the full inverted hierarchy region. This is KamLAND2-Zen. This poster elaborates on the status of the upgrade with specific emphasis on the streaming readout system, which aims to utilize a powerful RF-ADC and FGPA system on a chip, the Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale+ RFSoC.

6. A Bayesian Approach to KamLAND-Zen 800

Abstract

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0νββ) is a hypothetical lepton-number-violating process and its existence is one of the most important questions in particle physics. The discovery of 0νββ would answer persistent questions related to the intrinsic nature of neutrino mass and provide a window into physics beyond the Standard Model. KamLAND-Zen is one of the world-leading efforts in the search of 0νββ. Data was recently collected with 735 kg of Xe-136 and analyzed using a frequentist likelihood analysis to set a limit on the 0νββ half-life. In addition to the well-established frequentist approach, I conduct a Bayesian analysis with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). The Bayesian approach allows the use modern statistical tools and serves as an important cross check of the frequentist analysis. A good agreement has been reached between the frequentist and Bayesian analysis on individual background level.

Abstract

We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta (0) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the 0 decay half-life (T[superscript 0ν][subscript 1/2]) at 90 % credibility interval (CI) – i.e. the interval containing the true value of T[superscript 0ν][subscript 1/2] with 90 % probability – and the 3σ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a 90 % CI exclusion sensitivity of 2 · 10[superscript 25] year with 3 months, and 9 · 10[superscript 25] year with 5 years of live time. Abstract

The axion is a promising dark matter candidate, which was originally proposed to solve the strong-CP problem in particle physics. To date, the available parameter space for axion and axion-like particle dark matter is relatively unexplored, particularly at masses $m_a\lesssim1\,��$eV. ABRACADABRA is a new experimental program to search for axion dark matter over a broad range of masses, $10^{-12}\lesssim m_a\lesssim10^{-6}$ eV. ABRACADABRA-10 cm is a small-scale prototype for a future detector that could be sensitive to the QCD axion. In this Letter, we present the first results from a 1 month search for axions with ABRACADABRA-10 cm. We find no evidence for axion-like cosmic dark matter and set 95% C.L. upper limits on the axion-photon coupling between $g_{a����}, 7 pages, 3 Figures. Submitted to PRL

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta decay half-life of ¹³⁰Te with the CUORE-0 detector. From an exposure of 33.4 kg year of TeO₂, the half-life is determined to be T[subscript 1/2][superscript 2ν] = [8.2 ± 0.2 (stat.) ± 0.6 (syst.)] × 10²⁰ year. Abstract

We present the potential sensitivity of a future recoil detector for a first detection of the process of coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS). We use the Chooz reactor complex in France as our luminous source of reactor neutrinos. Leveraging the ability to cleanly separate the rate correlated with the reactor thermal power against (uncorrelated) backgrounds, we show that a 10 kilogram cryogenic bolometric array with 100 eV threshold should be able to extract a CE$\nu$NS signal within one year of running., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The quest for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0������$) is a promising experimental approach to search for lepton number violation in weak interactions, a key ingredient in generating the matter-antimatter asymmetry through models of Leptogenesis. The $^{136}$Xe-based $0������$ experiments KamLAND-Zen and EXO-200 currently set the most stringent limits on this process using two very different techniques. Each are preparing the next generation experiment, which will search for $0������$ in the parameter space corresponding to the inverted hierarchy for neutrino mass. Both of these techniques scale well to larger volumes while incorporating interesting new techniques. We present the status of current and next generation experiments of these collaborations and present two developments with the potential to identify $����$ decay events.

Liquid-scintillator-based detectors are a robust technology that scales well to large volumes. For this reason, they are attractive for experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay. A combination of improved photo-detection technology and novel liquid scintillators may allow for the extraction of particle direction in addition to the total energy of the particle. Abstract

The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early Universe, the dynamics of the supernova bursts that produced the heavy elements necessary for life and whether protons eventually decay --- these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our Universe, its current state and its eventual fate. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) represents an extensively developed plan for a world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions. LBNE is conceived around three central components: (1) a new, high-intensity neutrino source generated from a megawatt-class proton accelerator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, (2) a near neutrino detector just downstream of the source, and (3) a massive liquid argon time-projection chamber deployed as a far detector deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. This facility, located at the site of the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, is approximately 1,300 km from the neutrino source at Fermilab -- a distance (baseline) that delivers optimal sensitivity to neutrino charge-parity symmetry violation and mass ordering effects. This ambitious yet cost-effective design incorporates scalability and flexibility and can accommodate a variety of upgrades and contributions. With its exceptional combination of experimental configuration, technical capabilities, and potential for transformative discoveries, LBNE promises to be a vital facility for the field of particle physics worldwide, providing physicists from around the globe with opportunities to collaborate in a twenty to thirty year program of exciting science. Abstract

The fundamental nature of Dark Matter is a central theme of the Snowmass 2021 process, extending across all frontiers. In the last decade, advances in detector technology, analysis techniques and theoretical modeling have enabled a new generation of experiments and searches while broadening the types of candidates we can pursue. Over the next decade, there is great potential for discoveries that would transform our understanding of dark matter. In the following, we outline a road map for discovery developed in collaboration among the frontiers. The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle θ13 by detecting reactor ν¯e via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44% ± 12% (sys.) ± 5% (stat.) and 3.68ns ± 0.17ns (sys.) ± 0.15ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract

This paper describes a novel directional neutron detector. The low pressure time projection chamber uses a mix of helium and CF[subscript 4] gases. The detector reconstructs the energy and angular distribution of fast neutron recoils. This paper reports results of energy calibration using an α source and angular reconstruction studies using a collimated neutron source. The best performance is obtained with a 12.5% CF[subscript 4]–87.5% He gas mixture. At low energies the target for fast neutrons transitions is primarily helium, while at higher energies, the fluorine contributes as a target. The reconstruction efficiency is both energy and target dependent. For neutrons with energies less than 20 MeV, the reconstruction efficiency is ∼40% for fluorine recoils and ∼60% for helium recoils., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract

© Copyright owned by the author(s). CUORE is a ton-scale experiment approaching the data taking phase in Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130 Te using 988 crystals of tellurim dioxide. The crystals are operated as bolometers at about 10 mK taking advantage of one of the largest dilution cryostat ever built. Concluded in March 2016, the cryostat commissioning consisted in a sequence of cool down runs each one integrating new parts of the apparatus. The last run was performed with the fully configured cryostat and the thermal load at 4 K reached the impressive mass of about 14 tons. During that run the base temperature of 6.3 mK was reached and maintained for more than 70 days. An array of 8 crystals, called mini-tower, was used to check bolometers operation, readout electronics and DAQ. Results will be presented in terms of cooling power, electronic noise, energy resolution and preliminary background measurements.

Abstract

CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of130Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below 60keV.
