The Lajishan orogenic belt is one of the E-W-trending Caledonian erogenic belts within the Qinling-Qilian orogenic system. It was formed upon the Jiningian basement by intensive taphrogenesis. Its major characteristics comprise the prominent faulting along the north and south boundaries, the highly complicated petrological and petro-geochemical features of the volcanic rock series, and the development of a new type of ophiolite suite. In terms of tectonic analysis and the sequential analysis of tectonic settings of magmatic rocks, it is suggested that the Lajishan orogenic belt has undergone a complete "opening-closing" cycle, which can be further divided into 3 second-order "opening-closing" cycles. The composite characteristics of the "opening-closing" movement show that Laji Mountain is a typical fault orogenic belt. The fault orogenic belt is one of the most important types of intracontinental orogens. It is of critical theoretical and practical significance to summarize the characteristics and the diagnostic criteria of this kind of orogenic belts, and study the mechanism of their formation and build models of their evolution.

Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) analyses have been performed on omphacite from ultra-high pressure (UHP) eclogites at the locality of Shima, Dabie Mountains, China. TEM reveals that the microstructures consist dominantly of dislocation substructures, including free dislocations, loops, tiltwalls, dislocation tangles and subboundaries. They were produced by high-temperature ductile deformation, of which the main mechanism was dislocation creep. Antiphase domain (APD) boundaries are common planar defects; an age of 470 +/- 6 Ma for UHP eclogite formation has been obtained from the equiaxial size of APDs in ordered omphacites from Shima, coincident with ages given by single-zircon U-Pb dating (471 +/- 2 Ma). HRTEM reveals C2/c and P2/n space groups in different parts of one single omphacite crystal, and no exsolution is observed in the studied samples, which is attributed to rapid cooling. It is suggested that the UHP eclogites underwent a long period of annealing at high temperatures, followed by relatively rapid cooling. These data provide valuable information for the formation and exhumation mechanism of UHP eclogites in the Dabie high-pressure (HP) and UHP metamorphic belt.

The process and path of retrometamorphism of coesite have great significance to our understanding of the P-T tracks of the exhumation of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks. Most of the coesites in the eclogite from Shima, Anhui Province, the Dabie Mountains, China, are found degraded to quartz partly or wholly, with ruptures occurring in the shells, outside which include the coesite and quartz. According to the microscopic observation, the sample of coesite inclusion is composed of garnet, quartz and coesite, based on which we have built a three-shelled composite sphere model to compute the transition of coesite. Based on the crystal growth formulas and pressure conditions of the ruptures in the garnet, we have calculated the radius of the quartz sphere, which depends on temperature, and eventually drawn the different retrometamorphic paths for different retrometamorphism rates.

Fluid inclusions at a nano to sub-micron scale in quartz from jadeite quartzite at Shuanghe, Dabie Mountains, have been investigated by using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Most fluid inclusions are spherical or negative crystal shaped, forming wide swarm-like trails. The TEM reveals that the relationship between coesite and the host quartz is syntaxic and provides strong evidence of the occurrence of high-salty fluids at peak metamorphic conditions. The fluid inclusions are often connected to dislocations, which are undetected at the scale of optical microscopy. Non-decrepitation leakage of fluid inclusions may occur by pipe diffusion of molecule H2O or CO2 along dislocations from the inclusions into the host quartz, thus leading to original inclusion density and composition changes. It should be taken into full account for the correct petrological interpretation of micro-thermometric results.

The ultrastructures of parisite-(Ce) from a rare-earth mineral deposit of Sichuan Province, southwest China, have been observed and investigated by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). Six new polytypes 4H, 10H, 16H, 18R, 24R and 30R were determined in parisite-(Ce), as were their crystal structure types, subcell (a′c‴, a′c″, a′c′) and supercell (ac) parameters, reflection conditions, polytype features and probable space groups. The HREM studies revealed the complex polytypism in parisite-(Ce) whereby the six new polytypes, formed by long-period ordered stacking, always coexist with the common polytype parisite-(Ce)-6R by syntaxy and thus constitute the complex microstructural ‘syntactic polycrystals’, the host of which is the polytype parisite-(Ce)-6R.

Structures of calcium-rare-earth (Ca-RE) fluorocarbonate minerals from southwest China have been investigated using selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). They are described as combinations of layers of bastnäsite-(Ce), CeFCO3 (B layers), and synchysite-(Ce), CeFCO3·CaCO3 (S layers) (Donnay and Donnay, 1953). We report here the discovery of six new, regular, mixed-layer structures in parisite-(Ce) observed using SAED and HRTEM. The symmetry, cell parameters, chemical formulae and stacking of the structural unit layers, etc., were determined for each. The regular, mixed-layer structures are formed by stacking unit layers of bastnäsite-(Ce) and synchysite-(Ce) in varying proportions along the c axis. HRTEM shows that there are different distribution modes for the Ce-F ion layers, the CO3 ion groups between the Ce-F ion layers and the CO3 ion groups between the Ce-F and Ca ion layers. The minerals may be regarded as polymorphs with the same chemical composition and the same spacing of the unit layers, but different arrangements of ion layers in the structural unit layers and different stacking sequences of the structural unit layers.

Rutile from Shuanghe and Bixiling area in the Dabie Orogen were investigated by Micro- Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results show that all the grains exhibit a sharp band near 3280 cm-1 or 3295 cm-1. Two structures have been suggested about the position of H in rutile, namely the chanel center (CC) and basal octahedron edge (BOE) models. The lattice structure and electronic band structure of Al—H and Fe—H codoped rutile TiO2 has been calculated by first-principles method. According to O—H bond vibration frequency of FTIR and O—H…O bond distance between O—O of computational results, we deduce that modified channel center (MCC) model is more reasonable. The calculation results indicate that the t2g state of Fe overlaps with the O 2p state, which will narrow the band gap and lead to red shift in optical absorption spectra.
