Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising alternative therapy for benign or even malignant tumors. To improve the selective heating of tumor cells, target-specific photothermal conversion agents are often included, especially nanoparticles. Meanwhile, some indirect methods by manipulating the radiation and heat delivery are also adopted. Therefore, to gain a clear understanding of the mechanism, and to improve the controllability of PTT, a few issues need to be clarified, including bioheat and radiation transfer, localized and collective heating of nanoparticles, etc. In this review, we provide an introduction to the typical bioheat transfer and radiation transfer models along with the dynamic thermophysical properties of biological tissue. On this basis, we reviewed the most recent advances in the temperature control methods in PTT from macroscale to nanoscale. Most importantly, a comprehensive introduction of the localized and collective heating effects of nanoparticle clusters is provided to give a clear insight into the mechanism for PPT from the microscale and nanoscale point of view.

15. Heat transfer characteristics and compatibility of molten salt/ceramic porous composite phase change material

Molten salts are popular energy storage materials for medium- and high-temperature thermal energy storage. However, current methods for heat transfer enhancement do not apply due to the high corrosivity of molten salts and extreme high-temperature environment. Herein, porous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic and solar salt are formed into a composite phase change material (PCM). The ceramic skeleton is fabricated to an open-cell structure with high porosity and a large pore configuration. The SiC ceramic is wetted by the solar salt, so that the impregnation of salt into ceramic achieves a high loading at atmospheric pressure. The result of visual inspection shows that the temperature distribution in the composite PCM is more uniform compared with pure solar salt. The maximum temperature difference is reduced from 148 ? to 130 ? and the overall phase change rate is increased by up to 42.9 %. The SiC ceramics show excellent corrosion resistance during the cycles of thermal charging and discharging as compared to copper and aluminium which are the widely used thermal promoters for low-temperature PCMs. The results obtained from reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation are consistent with the corrosion behaviours of SiC ceramic in solar salt from aspects of physical dissolution, chemical reaction, and thermal stress failure. The composite PCM has advantages of simple preparation, low cost, and easy maintenance, therefore it has a great potential for large-scale applications.

OBJECTIVE The objectives of this study were to measure the global impact of the pandemic on the volumes for intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), IVT transfers, and stroke hospitalizations over 4 months at the height of the pandemic (March 1 to June 30, 2020) compared with two control 4-month periods. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study across 6 continents, 70 countries, and 457 stroke centers. Diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes and/or classifications in stroke databases. Microchannel heat sinks are able to provide high cooling capabilities in terms of heat flux rates. This makes them particularly interesting for the thermal management of electronic components such as CPUs, which have high power density and small dimensions. Pressure drop of the coolant across the microchannels may, however, be significant and give rise to viscous heating, thereby preventing the practical use of these devices. When the coolant is a polar fluid and the channel walls possess a net electric charge, an alternative means of moving the fluid is through an applied external electric field. The flow which originates is called electro-osmotic (EOF). EOF does not require moving parts, is free of vibrations and does not need lubrication, but is subject to Joule heating of the fluid and has flow and heat transfer characteristics which differ from those of pressure-drive flows. In spite of several previous investigation on EOF, no attention has been paid to the changes in velocity and temperature distributions caused by modifying the base cross-section of the channels which may be circular, rectangular or polygonal, thanks to the current capabilities of microfabrication. This work investigates numerically the influence of smoothing the corners of the cross-section at fixed hydraulic diameter on the values of the Poiseuille and Nusselt numbers for the laminar, steady and fully developed, electro-osmotic flow in a rectangular channel subject to uniform heat flux and Joule heating. Several aspect ratios are considered, as are different values of the ratio of Joule heating to heat flux through the walls. The results highlight a very slight increase of the Poiseuille number with the radius of curvature, whereas the Nusselt number experiences a significant improvement. Correlations are obtained for both the Poiseuille and Nusselt number as a function of the radius of curvature, aspect ratio and Joule heating-to-heat flux ratio.

Many superhydrophobic surfaces (both manmade and natural) normally exhibit micro- or nanosized roughness as well as hierarchical structure, which somehow can influence the surface's water repellence. In this chapter, the recent progress in preparing manmade superhydrophobic surfaces through a variety of methodologies, particularly within the past several years, and the fundamental theories of wetting phenomena related to superhydrophobic surfaces are reviewed, and the perspective of natural superhydrophobic surfaces utilized as mimicking models are discussed. The physics related to superhydrophobic surfaces is also discussed with attention of its potential applications. A facile method for preparing superhydrophobic surfaces based on micro and nano scaled structures is reported. Composite thin films are formed by using SiO2 nanoparticles and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). It is demonstrated that the hierarchical structure in micro and nano scale on the surface, plays an important role in prompting the superhydrophobic (water-repelling) properties. Nanoparticles have been applied into the construction of micro- and nanoscaled surface structures with extreme wettability over the past few years. However, the details of processing and employing colloidal nanosuspensions for this purpose have not yet been fully investigated. In this work, we study the surface structures formed via nanosuspensions, in which nanoparticles of solid phase are presented, and the caused surface wettability. We disperse silica nanoparticles with different sizes into pure ethanol to prepare nanosuspensions with a series of concentrations. The suspensions are ultrasonically processed to prompt uniform distribution of nanoparticles before application. The deposited nanosuspensions are thermally treated to assist the regulation of surface patterns based on nanoparticles. Hence, the investigation explores a variety of experimental conditions that will lead to distinctive surface structures and wettabilities. Accordingly, the wettability of the induced surfaces is investigated using contact angle measurement, and the structures of those surfaces are mainly revealed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Superhydrophilicity is observed on many of such formed surfaces, and the pattern of surface structures in micro- and nanoscale is closely related to the processing conditions and the size of nanoparticles. This paper describes a simulation model of nanoparticle assemblies formed by spray deposition. The simulation deposits nanoparticles via a semi-mechanistic process, which in spite of its simplicity generates morphologies of considerable complexity. The experiments reveal several relationships between nanoparticle parameters such as their relative proportions in mixtures, and resulting surface properties, such as roughness and superhydrophobicity. According to the simulation results, for mixtures involving nanoparticles with diameters 7 nm and 14 nm, a relative proportion of 40% vs. 60% respectively, produces the surfaces with largest contact angle.
