In recent years, sketch face recognition has a wide application in law enforcement agencies and criminals. Deep learning plays a crucial role in the recent developments of face recognition, however, it is challenging to employ deep learning methods for sketch face recognition due to insufficient face photo–sketch data. Moreover, compared to photos, sketches lack detailed texture, and there exists a domain gap between photos and sketches, hence, traditional homogeneous face recognition methods perform poorly in sketch face recognition. In this paper, a novel deep learning method termed Domain Adaptation Scaled Entropy Meta-Network (DASEMN) is proposed to tackle sketch face recognition tasks. Specifically, a meta-learning training strategy is designed to tackle the few-shot problem and improve the generalization ability of the network. Then, a generalized entropy loss termed scaled mean entropy loss is proposed to guide the network to extract discriminate features. Finally, a domain adaptation module is introduced in the training set to reduce the domain gap between the sketch domain and the photo domain. Experiments on UoM-SGFS and CUFSF sketch face databases show that the proposed method is superior to other sketch face recognition methods.

Chinese sprangletop (Leptochloa chinensis), belonging to the grass subfamily Chloridoideae, is one of the most notorious weeds in rice ecosystems. Here, we report a chromosome-scale reference genome assembly and a genomic variation map of the tetraploid L. chinensis. The L. chinensis genome is derived from two diploid progenitors that diverged ∼10.9 million years ago, and its two subgenomes display neither fractionation bias nor overall gene expression dominance. Comparative genomic analyses reveal substantial genome rearrangements in L. chinensis after its divergence from the common ancestor of Chloridoideae and, together with transcriptome profiling, demonstrate the important contribution of tetraploidization to the gene sources for the herbicide resistance of L. chinensis. Population genomic analyses of 89 accessions from China reveal that L. chinensis accessions collected from southern/southwestern provinces have substantially higher nucleotide diversity than those from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, suggesting that L. chinensis spread in China from the southern/southwestern provinces to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. During this spread, L. chinensis developed significantly increased herbicide resistance, accompanied by the selection of numerous genes involved in herbicide resistance. Taken together, our study generated valuable genomic resources for future fundamental research and agricultural management of L. chinensis, and provides significant new insights into the herbicide resistance as well as the origin and adaptive evolution of L. chinensis.

In-memory computing (IMC) is an effectual solution for energy-efficient artificial intelligence applications. Analog IMC amortizes the power consumption of multiple sensing amplifiers with analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and simultaneously completes the calculation of multi-line data with high parallelism degree. Based on a universal one-transistor one-magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) spin transfer torque magnetic RAM (STT-MRAM) cell, this paper demonstrates a novel tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio magnifying method to realize analog IMC. Previous concerns include low TMR ratio and analog calculation nonlinearity are addressed using device-circuit interaction. Peripheral circuits are minimally modified to enable in-memory matrix-vector multiplication. A current mirror with feedback structure is implemented to enhance analog computing linearity and calculation accuracy. The proposed design maximumly supports 1024 2-bit input and 1-bit weight multiply-and-accumulate (MAC) computations simultaneously. The 2-bit input is represented by the width of the input (IN) pulses, while the 1-bit weight is stored in STT-MRAM and the x7500 magnified TMR (m-TMR) ratio is obtained by latching. The proposal is simulated using 28-nm CMOS process and MTJ compact model. IntroductionProbiotic is adjuvant therapy for traditional drug treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). In the present study, Lactobacillus acidophilus C4 with high acid and bile salt resistance has been isolated and screened, and the beneficial effect of L. acidophilus C4 on Dextran Sulfate Sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice has been evaluated. Our data showed that oral administration of L. acidophilus C4 remarkably alleviated colitis symptoms in mice and minimized colon tissue damage.MethodsTo elucidate the underlying mechanism, we have investigated the levels of inflammatory cytokines and intestinal tight junction (TJ) related proteins (occludin and ZO-1) in colon tissue, as well as the intestinal microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in feces.ResultsCompared to the DSS group, the inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in L. acidophilus C4 group were reduced, while the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and catalase (CAT) were found to be elevated. In addition, proteins linked to TJ were elevated after L. acidophilus C4 intervention. Further study revealed that L. acidophilus C4 reversed the decrease in intestinal microbiota diversity caused by colitis and promoted the levels of SCFAs.DiscussionThis study demonstrate that L. acidophilus C4 effectively alleviated DSS-induced colitis in mice by repairing the mucosal barrier and maintaining the intestinal microecological balance. L. acidophilus C4 could be of great potential for colitis therapy.

Carbon deposits in Residue Fluidized Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) separators could be a safety hazard, they reduce efficiency, may also cause unscheduled shutdowns in industrial production. In this paper, the effect of coking on flow fields and separation performances was studied with an industrial cyclone separator. The time-averaged and dynamic flow-fields were affected significantly by the coking, as well as separation performance. The tangential and axial velocities decreased due to increased coking, with a maximum decrease of 102.9% and 60.7%, respectively. And the pressure drops decreased due to the vortex dissipation losses, with a maximum decrease of 33.8%. The vorticity also aggravated the breakage with the increasing coking as the breakage position moved up to the cone section. The instability of the flow-field affected the separation efficiency, and the separation efficiency, in turn, as a function of coking types, with a maximum decrease of 18.9%. With increased coking, both the pressure eccentricity and dynamic pressure standard deviation increased. And the main frequency of pressure fluctuation decreased from 37 Hz to 9 Hz. This study has the potential to further the understanding of the flow-field characteristics and performance for different coking types in cyclone separators.

Plant-pathogenic fungi are a major threat to food security. Among these are subcuticular pathogens, which often cause latent asymptomatic infections, making them difficult to control.

Partial differential equation (PDE) is an important tool for scientific research and are widely used in various fields. However, it is usually very difficult to obtain accurate analytical solutions of partial differential equations, and numerical methods to solve PDEs are often computationally intensive and very time-consuming. In recent years, Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have been successfully applied to find numerical solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs) and have shown great potential. All the while, solitary waves have been of great interest to researchers in the field of nonlinear science. In this paper, we perform numerical simulations of solitary wave solutions of several partial differential equations using improved PINNs. The improved PINNs not only incorporate constraints on the control equations to ensure the interpretability of the prediction results, which is important for physical field simulations. In addition, an adaptive activation function is introduced. By introducing hyperparameters in the activation function to change the slope of the activation function to avoid the disappearance of the gradient, thereby saving computing time and speeding up training. In this paper, the mKdV equation, the improved Boussinesq equation, the CDGSK equation and the p-gBKP equation are selected for study, and the errors of the simulation results are analyzed to assess the accuracy of the predicted solitary wave solution. The experimental results show that the improved PINNs are significantly better than the traditional PINNs with shorter training time but more accurate prediction results. The improved PINNs improve the training speed by more than 1.5 times compared with the traditional PINNs, while maintaining the prediction error less than $10^{-2}$ in this order of magnitude.

Purpose:To investigate the potential factors related to alignment instability in childhood concomitant strabismus. Design: Prospective cohort study. Methods: In total, 198 children with concomitant strabismus (57 esotropia, 141 exotropia) underwent repeat prism and alternate cover tests (PACTs) by two orthoptists who were certified by the study, and sensory tests were all performed once. We defined the alignment measurement as stable if the absolute value of the measurement difference between two orthoptists was within 10 prism diopters (PD) at distance or at near, and unstable if the difference was 10 PD or greater at distance or at near. We analyzed the relationship between the measurement variability and sensory results, patient age, and angle of deviations. Results: The mean age of the esotropia and exotropia patients was 68.5 ± 26.3 months (range, 36–164 months) and 96.1 ± 33.6 months (range, 22–200 months), respectively, and there was a significant difference in suppression related alignment instability, both at distance (P= 0.005) and at near (P = 0.039). Anisometropia also showed a significant difference at distance (P = 0.033) for alignment instability, and there was no significant statistical effect of age on measurement variability in our study. Alignment instability is positively associated with the angle of deviation, especially at distance (P = 0.019 for exotropia, P= 0.002 for esotropia). Conclusion: Clinical characteristics are proven related to alignment instability, and suppression is an important factor for alignment instability in childhood concomitant strabismus. Nevertheless, it would be entirely reasonable to consider alignment instability in relation to other factors, such as anisometropia and a large angle of strabismus, when evaluating patient deviations. AKT is a critical signaling node downstream of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), which is often activated in cancer. We analyzed the state of activation of AKT in 80 human non–small cell lung carcinoma cell lines under serum starvation conditions. We identified 13 lines, which showed persistent AKT activation in the absence of serum. In 12 of 13 lines, AKT activation could be attributed to loss of PTEN, activating mutation in EGF receptor (EGFR) or PIK3CA, or amplification of ERBB2. HCC2429 was the only cell line that had no alterations in those genes, but had high phospho-AKT(Ser473) levels under serum starvation conditions. However, the activation of AKT in HCC2429 was PI3K- and mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2)-dependent based upon use of specific inhibitors. Kinome tyrosine phosphorylation profiling showed that both Notch and SRC were highly activated in this cell line. Despite the activation of Notch, AKT activation and cell survival were not affected by Notch inhibitors DAPT or compound E. In contrast, SRC inhibitors PP2 and dasatinib both significantly decreased pAKT(Ser473) levels and reduced cell survival by inducing apoptosis. Furthermore, a combination of SRC and mTOR inhibition synergistically blocked activation of AKT and induced apoptosis. Overexpression of SRC has been identified previously in human lung cancers, and these results suggest that a combination of SRC and mTOR inhibitors may have unique therapeutic benefit for a subset of lung cancers with these molecular features. In this work, we fabricated and characterized 4 × 4 parallel flip-chip AlGaN-based micro-LED arrays with varied mesa diameters of 120 µm, 100 µm, 80 µm, and 60 µm. The reported micro-LED arrays have a maximum bandwidth of 380 MHz and a peak wavelength of ∼275 nm. It is found that the electrical and optical characteristics of AlGaN-based micro-LED arrays show strong size dependence for ultraviolet communication (UVC). The differential resistance increases from 28.8 Ω to 112 Ω, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) is increased by ∼30%, and the bandwidth doubles as the diameter of individual micro-LED decreases from 120 µm to 60 µm. Our research proves that tailoring the mesa size of parallel flip-chip AlGaN-based micro-LED arrays can further enhance its bandwidth and promote its application in UVC.

With the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization in China, wastewater treatment is increasing yearly. As a by-product of wastewater treatment, the gasification of sludge with coal in chemical looping process is a clean and efficient conversion technology. To explore the reaction behavior of cogasification of sludge and coal with iron-based oxygen carriers (OCs) for producing hydrogen-rich syngas, the experiment of cogasification using Fe2O3/Al2O3 as OC in a fluidized bed reactor was conducted. The result showed that the volume percentage of hydrogen (H2) and syngas yield is proportional to the amount of sludge added. The optimal operation conditions were: temperature at 900 °C, the mass ratio of OC to coal at 5.80 and mass ratio of sludge to coal at 0.2. Under this operating condition, the volume percentage of H2 and syngas yield in the flue gas was 75.6 vol% and 97.5 L·min-1·kg-1, respectively. Besides, the OC showed a stable reactivity in the sixth redox cycle with added sludge. However, the reactivity of OC significantly declined in the seventh and eighth redox cycles. It was recovered when the ash was separated. The decrease in the specific surface area of the OC caused by ash deposition is the main reason for the decline in its reactivity. The kinetic analysis showed that the random pore model describes the reaction mechanism of sludge/coal chemical looping gasification (CLG). The addition of sludge can reduce the activation energy of coal CLG reaction, accelerate the gasification reaction rate and increase the carbon conversion.

Objective: PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) plays a critical role in cholesterol metabolism via the PCSK9–LDLR (low-density lipoprotein receptor) axis in the liver; however, evidence indicates that PCSK9 directly contributes to the pathogenesis of various diseases through mechanisms independent of its LDL-cholesterol regulation. The objective of this study was to determine how PCSK9 directly acts on vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs), contributing to degenerative vascular disease. Approach and Results: We first examined the effects of PCSK9 on cultured human aortic SMCs. Overexpression of PCSK9 downregulated the expression of ApoER2 (apolipoprotein E receptor 2), a known target of PCSK9. Treatment with soluble recombinant human ApoER2 or the DNA synthesis inhibitor, hydroxyurea, inhibited PCSK9-induced polyploidization and other cellular responses of human SMCs. Treatment with antibodies against ApoER2 resulted in similar effects to those observed with PCSK9 overexpression. Inducible, SMC-specific knockout of Pcsk9 accelerated neointima formation in mouse carotid arteries and reduced age-related arterial stiffness. PCSK9 was expressed in SMCs of human atherosclerotic lesions and abundant in the “shoulder” regions of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques. PCSK9 was also expressed in SMCs of abdominal aortic aneurysm, which was inversely related to the expression of smooth muscle α-actin. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that PCSK9 inhibits proliferation and induces polyploidization, senescence, and apoptosis, which may be relevant to various degenerative vascular diseases.

Two-dimensional material membranes with fast transport channels and versatile chemical functionality are promising for molecular separation. Herein, for the first time, we reported design and engineering of two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene (called transition metal carbides and nitrides) membranes supported on asymmetric polymeric hollow fiber substrate for water desalination. The membrane morphology, physicochemical properties and ions exclusion performance were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that surface hydrophilicity and electrostatic repulsion and size sieving effect of interlayer channels synergistically endowed the MXene hollow fiber membrane with fast water permeation and efficient rejection of divalent ions during nanofiltration process.

Background Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (M. ovipneumoniae) is wide epidemic in the world, and is the main pathogen of sheep pneumonia, causing a series of clinical symptoms, such as depression, anorexia, hyperthermia, cough, dyspnea and tract secretions and so on. In recent years, the prevalence of M. ovipneumoniae pneumonia has become increasingly serious in sheep farms in Ningxia, China, causing significant losses. Results In this study, a total of 105 samples were collected from 13 large-scale farms in Ningxia for pathogen isolation, identification, pathological dissection and histopathological observation. The results showed that 13 strains of M. ovipneumoniae were isolated from the samples collected from 13 farms. The lesions caused by M. ovipneumoniae were mainly in trachea, bronchus and lung, including necrosis of tracheal mucosal epithelial cells, disintegration of some epithelial cells, edema of mucosal lamina propria, with inflammatory cell infiltration, cytoplasmic vacuolization of epithelial cells of bronchial mucosa, massive infiltration of inflammatory cells in the alveolar space of lung, necrosis and hyperplasia of alveolar epithelial cells. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the proportion of M. ovipneumoniae positive area in lung was the largest, followed by that in bronchus and trachea. The mRNA expression of cytokines in target organs were detected by qPCR. The results showed that the cytokines of significantly up-regulated mRNA expression in trachea was IL-12. The cytokines of significantly up-regulated mRNA expression in the bronchus included IL-10 and IL-12. The cytokines of significantly up-regulated mRNA expression in the lung included IL-1β and NF-κB. Conclusions Molecular identification of pathogens, immunohistochemical analysis and detection of inflammatory cytokines of lesion tissues play important roles in the diagnosis of M. ovipneumoniae infection. This study lays a foundation for the diagnosis, prevention, control and pathological damage mechanism of M. ovipneumoniae pneumonia.

Nanochannels in laminated graphene oxide nanosheets featuring confined mass transport have attracted interest in multiple research fields. The use of nanochannels for reverse osmosis is a prospect for developing next-generation synthetic water-treatment membranes. The robustness of nanochannels under high-pressure conditions is vital for effectively separating water and ions with sub-nanometer precision. Although several strategies have been developed to address this issue, the inconsistent response of nanochannels to external conditions used in membrane processes has rarely been investigated. In this study, we develop a robust interlayer channel by balancing the associated chemistry and confinement stability to exclude salt solutes. We build a series of membrane nanochannels with similar physical dimensions but different channel functionalities and reveal their divergent deformation behaviors under different conditions. The deformation constraint effectively endows the nanochannel with rapid deformation recovery and excellent ion exclusion performance under variable pressure conditions. This study can help understand the deformation behavior of two-dimensional nanochannels in pressure-driven membrane processes and develop strategies for the corresponding deformation constraints regarding the pore wall and interior.

The failure of melanoma immunotherapy can be mediated by immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and insufficient activation effector T cells to against tumor. Here, we show that inhibition of galectin-3 (gal-3) enhances the infiltration of T cells in TME and improves the sensitivity of anti-PD-L1 therapy. We identify that RNF8 downregulated the expression of gal-3 by K48-polyubiquitination and promoted gal-3 degradation via ubiquitin proteasome system. RNF8 deficiency in host but sufficiency in implanted melanoma results immune exclusion and tumor progression due to up-regulation of gal-3. Up-regulation of gal-3 decreased the immune cell infiltration by restricting IL-12 and IFN-γ. Inhibition of gal-3 reverses immunosuppression and induces immune cells infiltration in tumor microenvironment. Moreover, gal-3 inhibitor treatment can increase the sensitivity of PD-L1 inhibitors via increasing immune cells infiltration and enhancing immune response in tumor. This study reveals a previously unrecognized immunoregulation function of RNF8 and provides a promising strategy for therapy of “cold” tumors. Tremendous effects of melanoma treatment can be achieved by facilitating immune cell infiltration combined with anti-PD-L1 treatment.

Background The aim of this observational study was to identify ocular and visual perceptive risk factors related to treatment results following refractive correction and patching in children with anisometropic amblyopia, who were between the ages of 4 to 14 years old. Methods One-hundred and two children with newly diagnosed anisometropic amblyopia were recruited. Successful treatment of amblyopia was defined as the final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) better than or equal to 0.1 logMAR and amblyopic eye BCVA within 1 line of the sound eye BCVA by the end of the treatment period. BCVA, cycloplegic refraction, stereoacuity, perceptual eye position (PEP) and interocular suppression were measured. Results Of these patients, 45.10% achieved successful treatment of amblyopia after refractive correction and patching for 10.5 months. The mean age was not significantly different between patients who were successfully and unsuccessfully treated (5.50 ± 1.59 years vs 6.14 ± 2.19 years, respectively). Patients who failed treatment had significantly larger interocular difference of BCVA at the time of initial treatment (successful group: 0.33 ± 0.29 logMAR, unsuccessful group: 0.65 ± 0.35 logMAR) and after refractive adaptation (successful group: 0.15 ± 0.13 logMAR, unsuccessful group: 0.42 ± 0.35 logMAR). They also had higher spherical equivalent (SE) of amblyopic eyes (successful group: 3.08 ± 3.61 D, unsuccessful group: 5.27 ± 3.38 D), bigger interocular difference of SE (successful group: 0.94 ± 2.71 D, unsuccessful group: 3.09 ± 3.05 D), worse stereoacuity (successful group: 2.32 ± 0.37 log seconds of arc, unsuccessful group: 2.75 ± 0.32 log seconds of arc), larger vertical PEP deviation (successful group: 6.41 ± 6.08 pixel, unsuccessful group: 19.07 ± 24.96 pixel) and deeper interocular suppression (successful group: 21.7 ± 19.7%, unsuccessful group: 37.8 ± 27.1%) than those of successfully treated patients. The most influential treatment failure risk factors were larger vertical PEP deviation [adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval) 1.12 (1.02–1.22)] and worse stereoacuity [adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval) 7.72 (1.50–39.85)] in multiple logistic regression analysis. Conclusions Larger vertical PEP deviation and worse stereoacuity were the most influential treatment failure risk factors in children with anisometropic amblyopia. The vertical PEP deviation and stereoacuity, which can reflect interocular interaction, may be useful in predicting the response to therapy.

IntroductionPM2.5 and climate change are two major public health concerns, with majority of the research on their interaction focused on the synergistic effect, particularly for extreme events such as hot or cold temperatures. The climate sustainability index (CLS) was introduced to comprehensively explore the impact of climate change and the interactive effect on human health with air pollution.MethodsIn this study, a county-level panel data in China was collected and used. The generalized additive model (GAM) and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) was used to explore the interactive and spatial effect on mortality between CLS and PM2.5.Results and discussionsIndividually, when CLS is higher than 150 or lower than 50, the mortality is higher. Moreover, when PM2.5 is more than 35 μg/m3, the influence on mortality is significantly increased as PM2.5 concentration rises; when PM2.5 is above 70 μg/m3, the trend is sharp. A nonlinear antagonistic effect between CLS and PM2.5 was found in this study, proving that the combined adverse health effects of climate change and air pollution, especially when CLS was lower (below 100) and PM2.5 was higher (above 35 μg/m3), the antagonistic effect was much stronger. From a spatial perspective, the impact of CLS and PM2.5 on mortality varies in different geographical regions. A negative and positive influence of CLS and PM2.5 was found in east China, especially in the northeastern and northern regions, -which were heavily polluted. This study illustrated that climate sustainability, at certain level, could mitigate the adverse health influence of air pollution, and provided a new perspective on health risk mitigation from pollution reduction and climate adaptation.

Background. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent microvascular complication of diabetes, and the levels of chemerin were associated with the severity of DR. However, there is no research on chemerin in the development of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Therefore, our study aimed to explore the relationship between chemerin and PDR. Methods. The levels of chemerin/chemokine-like receptor (CMKLR1), proinflammatory cytokines, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in 90 cases of PDR and nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) patients and in high glucose (HG) stimulated human retinal pigment epithelium cells (ARPE-19) were evaluated by ELISA. Moreover, chemerin was added into HG-induced ARPE-19 cells to assess its effect on proinflammatory cytokines and VEGF. Results. The levels of chemerin/CMKLR1 were higher in PDR patients than NPDR ones, and chemerin was positively correlated with CMKLR1 in PDR patients. Compared to NPDR, the secretions of proinflammatory cytokines and VEGF were increased in PDR patients and positively correlated with chemerin/CMKLR1. Additionally, chemerin activated CMKLR1 and aggravated HG-induced cell injury, inflammatory responses, and VEGF expressions in ARPE-19 cells. Conclusion. Our study demonstrated that chemerin/CMKLR1 axis aggravated the progression of PDR, which suggested that inhibition of chemerin might serve as a new therapeutic approach to treat PDR.

Four biomass-based catalyst carriers with different pore structures were prepared by using a carbonization-activation method, followed by employment in the copyrolysis of Walnut Shell/Polypropylene (WNS/PP) to produce Benzene, Toluene and Xylene (BTX). Ten cycles were performed in each copyrolysis test in a bench-scaled tube furnace to determine the suitable pore size of the catalyst and excellent cycling performance for BTX production. In addition, Zn, Ni, and Ce were loaded with the selected catalyst carriers to synthesize the most suitable biomass-based catalyst. Results showed that the pore size and active center of the catalyst were the key factors affecting the WNS/PP catalytic copyrolysis. Biomass-based carrier with a pore size in the range of 0.55-1.2 nm was the most suitable to produce BTX in the optimal 10 cycle performance; it realized a relative BTX content of 9-20 area%, and a BTX mass yield of 23-67 mg/(graw) in the liquid-phase products from the WNS/PP copyrolysis. A catalyst loaded with 10 wt% Zn possessed the best catalytic effect with a relative BTX content of 39.49 area%, and a BTX yield of 111.13 mg/(graw).

Understanding the acidic characteristics of graphene oxide (GO) and the relating deprotonation and proton transfer behaviors of oxygen-containing functional groups in the water environment is of great significance for the application of GO nanoscale materials. In this study, firstly, the density functional theory (DFT) method was applied to compute the explicit acidity constant (pKa) of the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on GOs. The good consistency of our results with experiments approves the applicability of the designed thermodynamic cycles for computing the pKa of GOs. Secondly, the thermodynamics and kinetics of the deprotonation reactions of GOs in the presence of hydroxyl anions were investigated, quantitatively revealing that it is the carboxyl groups that mainly contribute to the surface charge acquisition of GO. Lastly, specific intramolecular proton transfer pathways were studied energetically, demonstrating that the proton is easily transferred between the adjacent hydroxyl group and the epoxy group on GO basal plane. This process could cause a change in the distribution of surface charge on GO surface, which will be very critical in understanding the surface properties of GOs.

This paper investigates the effect on the physicochemical and functional properties of soybean protein concentrate (SPC) by using Alcalase protease and high-pressure homogenization (HPH) (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 MPa) for the combined modification. The results showed that the degree of hydrolysis of SPC was 4.1% and the antigen protein was degraded after Alcalase hydrolysis, when the homogenization pressure (HP) was 6 0Mpa, the particle size of the SPC was the smallest, the zate potential absolute value up to 33.45 mV, the secondary structure has the lowest β-sheet content, the highest random coil content, and the highest surface hydrophobicity (H0), the size of protein fragments on the microstructure surface is the smallest, the lowest denaturation temperature (Td) and enthalpy (△H) are 72.59°C and 1.35 J/g, the highest solubility is 80.54%, and the highest water and oil holding capacities are 7.73 g/g and 6.51 g/g, respectively. The best emulsifying activity and emulsifying stability were 43.46 m2/g and 190.35 min, the most even distribution of emulsion droplets. This indicates that the HPH treatment destroys the structure of enzymatic hydrolyzed SPC, changes its physicochemical properties, and improves its functional properties. In this study, SPC was modified by HPH and enzyme combined treatment, in order to improve the functionality and application range of SPC, and provide a theoretical basis for its high-value utilization in the food field.

Over the last decade, considerable attention has been paid to the formation mechanism of the ordered β conformation for PFO both in the solution and film to prepare high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. However, the process of solvent evaporation and aggregates transferred from the solution to the film also play key roles in forming ordered structures, which have been neglected. Phytophthora species are notorious plant pathogens, with some causing devastating tree diseases that threaten the survival of their host species. One such example is Phytophthora agathidicida, the causal agent of kauri dieback – a root and trunk rot disease that kills the ancient, iconic and culturally significant tree species, Agathis australis (New Zealand kauri). A deeper understanding of how Phytophthora pathogens infect their hosts and cause disease is critical for the development of effective treatments. Such an understanding can be gained by interrogating pathogen genomes for effector genes, which are involved in virulence or pathogenicity. Although genome sequencing has become more affordable, the complete assembly of Phytophthora genomes has been problematic, particularly for those with a high abundance of repetitive sequences. Therefore, effector genes located in repetitive regions could be truncated or missed in a fragmented genome assembly. Using a combination of long-read PacBio sequences, chromatin conformation capture (Hi-C) and Illumina short reads, we assembled the P. agathidicida genome into ten complete chromosomes, with a genome size of 57 Mb including 34% repeats. This is the first Phytophthora genome assembled to chromosome level and it reveals a high level of syntenic conservation with the complete genome of Peronospora effusa, the only other completely assembled genome sequence of an oomycete. All P. agathidicida chromosomes have clearly defined centromeres and contain candidate effector genes such as RXLRs and CRNs, but in different proportions, reflecting the presence of gene family clusters. Candidate effector genes are predominantly found in gene-poor, repeat-rich regions of the genome, and in some cases showed a high degree of duplication. Analysis of candidate RXLR effector genes that occur in multicopy gene families indicated half of them were not expressed in planta. Candidate CRN effector gene families showed evidence of transposon-mediated recombination leading to new combinations of protein domains, both within and between chromosomes. Further analysis of this complete genome assembly will help inform new methods of disease control against P. agathidicida and other Phytophthora species, ultimately helping decipher how Phytophthora pathogens have evolved to shape their effector repertoires and how they might adapt in the future.
