Background: Tumor pathology can assess patient prognosis based on a morphological deviation of tumor tissue from normal. Digitizing whole slide images (WSIs) of tissue enables the use of deep learning (DL) techniques in pathology, which may shed light on prognostic indicators of cancers, and avoid biases introduced by human experience.Purpose: We aim to explore new prognostic indicators of ovarian cancer (OC) patients using the DL framework on WSIs, and provide a valuable approach for OC risk stratification.Methods: We obtained the TCGA-OV dataset from the NIH Genomic Data Commons Data Portal database. The preprocessing of the dataset was comprised of three stages: 1) The WSIs and corresponding clinical data were paired and filtered based on a unique patient ID; 2) a weakly-supervised CLAM WSI-analysis tool was exploited to segment regions of interest; 3) the pre-trained model ResNet50 on ImageNet was employed to extract feature tensors. We proposed an attention-based network to predict a hazard score for each case. Furthermore, all cases were divided into a high-risk score group and a low-risk one according to the median as the threshold value. The multi-omics data of OC patients were used to assess the potential applications of the risk score. Finally, a nomogram based on risk scores and age features was established.Results: A total of 90 WSIs were processed, extracted, and fed into the attention-based network. The mean value of the resulting C-index was 0.5789 (0.5096–0.6053), and the resulting p-value was 0.00845. Moreover, the risk score showed a better prediction ability in the HRD + subgroup.Conclusion: Our deep learning framework is a promising method for searching WSIs, and providing a valuable clinical means for prognosis.

We present NeRFVS, a novel neural radiance fields (NeRF) based method to enable free navigation in a room. NeRF achieves impressive performance in rendering images for novel views similar to the input views while suffering for novel views that are significantly different from the training views. To address this issue, we utilize the holistic priors, including pseudo depth maps and view coverage information, from neural reconstruction to guide the learning of implicit neural representations of 3D indoor scenes. Concretely, an off-the-shelf neural reconstruction method is leveraged to generate a geometry scaffold. Then, two loss functions based on the holistic priors are proposed to improve the learning of NeRF: 1) A robust depth loss that can tolerate the error of the pseudo depth map to guide the geometry learning of NeRF; 2) A variance loss to regularize the variance of implicit neural representations to reduce the geometry and color ambiguity in the learning procedure. These two loss functions are modulated during NeRF optimization according to the view coverage information to reduce the negative influence brought by the view coverage imbalance. Extensive results demonstrate that our NeRFVS outperforms state-of-the-art view synthesis methods quantitatively and qualitatively on indoor scenes, achieving high-fidelity free navigation results., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

In this paper, we present a hybrid X-shaped vision Transformer, named Xformer, which performs notably on image denoising tasks. We explore strengthening the global representation of tokens from different scopes. In detail, we adopt two types of Transformer blocks. The spatial-wise Transformer block performs fine-grained local patches interactions across tokens defined by spatial dimension. The channel-wise Transformer block performs direct global context interactions across tokens defined by channel dimension. Based on the concurrent network structure, we design two branches to conduct these two interaction fashions. Within each branch, we employ an encoder-decoder architecture to capture multi-scale features. Besides, we propose the Bidirectional Connection Unit (BCU) to couple the learned representations from these two branches while providing enhanced information fusion. The joint designs make our Xformer powerful to conduct global information modeling in both spatial and channel dimensions. Extensive experiments show that Xformer, under the comparable model complexity, achieves state-of-the-art performance on the synthetic and real-world image denoising tasks.

Portrait stylization is a long-standing task enabling extensive applications. Although 2D-based methods have made great progress in recent years, real-world applications such as metaverse and games often demand 3D content. On the other hand, the requirement of 3D data, which is costly to acquire, significantly impedes the development of 3D portrait stylization methods. In this paper, inspired by the success of 3D-aware GANs that bridge 2D and 3D domains with 3D fields as the intermediate representation for rendering 2D images, we propose a novel method, dubbed HyperStyle3D, based on 3D-aware GANs for 3D portrait stylization. At the core of our method is a hyper-network learned to manipulate the parameters of the generator in a single forward pass. It not only offers a strong capacity to handle multiple styles with a single model, but also enables flexible fine-grained stylization that affects only texture, shape, or local part of the portrait. While the use of 3D-aware GANs bypasses the requirement of 3D data, we further alleviate the necessity of style images with the CLIP model being the stylization guidance. We conduct an extensive set of experiments across the style, attribute, and shape, and meanwhile, measure the 3D consistency. These experiments demonstrate the superior capability of our HyperStyle3D model in rendering 3D-consistent images in diverse styles, deforming the face shape, and editing various attributes.

We aim at advancing blind image quality assessment (BIQA), which predicts the human perception of image quality without any reference information. We develop a general and automated multitask learning scheme for BIQA to exploit auxiliary knowledge from other tasks, in a way that the model parameter sharing and the loss weighting are determined automatically. Specifically, we first describe all candidate label combinations (from multiple tasks) using a textual template, and compute the joint probability from the cosine similarities of the visual-textual embeddings. Predictions of each task can be inferred from the joint distribution, and optimized by carefully designed loss functions. Through comprehensive experiments on learning three tasks - BIQA, scene classification, and distortion type identification, we verify that the proposed BIQA method 1) benefits from the scene classification and distortion type identification tasks and outperforms the state-of-the-art on multiple IQA datasets, 2) is more robust in the group maximum differentiation competition, and 3) realigns the quality annotations from different IQA datasets more effectively. Transformer architectures have exhibited remarkable performance in image super-resolution (SR). Since the quadratic computational complexity of the self-attention (SA) in Transformer, existing methods tend to adopt SA in a local region to reduce overheads. However, the local design restricts the global context exploitation, which is critical for accurate image reconstruction. In this work, we propose the Recursive Generalization Transformer (RGT) for image SR, which can capture global spatial information and is suitable for high-resolution images. Specifically, we propose the recursive-generalization self-attention (RG-SA). It recursively aggregates input features into representative feature maps, and then utilizes cross-attention to extract global information. Meanwhile, the channel dimensions of attention matrices (query, key, and value) are further scaled for a better trade-off between computational overheads and performance. Furthermore, we combine the RG-SA with local self-attention to enhance the exploitation of the global context, and propose the hybrid adaptive integration (HAI) for module integration. The HAI allows the direct and effective fusion between features at different levels (local or global). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our RGT outperforms recent state-of-the-art methods.

Error distribution analysis is an important assistant technology for the research of SINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System). Error distribution result can provide the contribution of different errors to final navigation error, which is helpful for modifying and optimizing SINS. To realize decomposing the navigation error into parts that caused by each error source, the SINS error state space model is established and covariance matrix is decomposed according to error sources. The proposed error distribution analysis method based on 34-dimension SINS error model can quantitatively analyze the contribution to the end navigation error of initial errors, IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) bias, IMU scale factor errors, mounting errors of gyroscopes and accelerometers, and IMU stochastic errors. The simulations in static condition and single axis rotation condition indict that the distribution result of proposed analysis method accords with the law of error propagation. After trajectory determined, the corresponding error distribution result will be calculated with the proposed method. Compared with the Monte-Carlo method and other method based on covariance matrix, the proposed method uses more complete error model, considers the interaction effect of error sources and can be easily realized with less computation.

To obtain a high-accuracy position with SINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System), initial alignment needs to determine initial attitude rapidly and accurately. High-accuracy grade IMU(Inertial Measurement Uint) can obtain the initial attitude indenpendently, however, the low-accuracy grade gyroscope doesn't adapt to determine the heading angle, hence the initial attitude matrix will not be obtained. If using large misalignment angle model to estiamting heading angle, the convergence time will become much longer. For solving these two problems, a novel alignment algorithm combined backtracking algorithm and reverse navigation updating method with GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) aiding is proposed herein. The simulation and land vehicle test were finished to evaluate the alignment accuracy of the proposed algorithm. The horizontal misalignment is less than 2.3 arcmin and the heading misalignment is less than 10.1 arcmin in test. Multivariate time series forecasting (MTSF) is a fundamental problem in numerous real-world applications. Recently, Transformer has become the de facto solution for MTSF, especially for the long-term cases. However, except for the one forward operation, the basic configurations in existing MTSF Transformer architectures were barely carefully verified. In this study, we point out that the current tokenization strategy in MTSF Transformer architectures ignores the token uniformity inductive bias of Transformers. Therefore, the vanilla MTSF transformer struggles to capture details in time series and presents inferior performance. Based on this observation, we make a series of evolution on the basic architecture of the vanilla MTSF transformer. We vary the flawed tokenization strategy, along with the decoder structure and embeddings. Surprisingly, the evolved simple transformer architecture is highly effective, which successfully avoids the over-smoothing phenomena in the vanilla MTSF transformer, achieves a more detailed and accurate prediction, and even substantially outperforms the state-of-the-art Transformers that are well-designed for MTSF.

World models learn the consequences of actions in vision-based interactive systems. However, in practical scenarios such as autonomous driving, there commonly exists noncontrollable dynamics independent of the action signals, making it difficult to learn effective world models. To tackle this problem, we present a novel reinforcement learning approach named Iso-Dream, which improves the Dream-to-Control framework in two aspects. First, by optimizing the inverse dynamics, we encourage the world model to learn controllable and noncontrollable sources of spatiotemporal changes on isolated state transition branches. Second, we optimize the behavior of the agent on the decoupled latent imaginations of the world model. Specifically, to estimate state values, we roll-out the noncontrollable states into the future and associate them with the current controllable state. In this way, the isolation of dynamics sources can greatly benefit long-horizon decision-making of the agent, such as a self-driving car that can avoid potential risks by anticipating the movement of other vehicles. Experiments show that Iso-Dream is effective in decoupling the mixed dynamics and remarkably outperforms existing approaches in a wide range of visual control and prediction domains.

Deep learning models have shown their vulnerability when dealing with adversarial attacks. Existing attacks almost perform on low-level instances, such as pixels and super-pixels, and rarely exploit semantic clues. For face recognition attacks, existing methods typically generate the l_p-norm perturbations on pixels, however, resulting in low attack transferability and high vulnerability to denoising defense models. In this work, instead of performing perturbations on the low-level pixels, we propose to generate attacks through perturbing on the high-level semantics to improve attack transferability. Specifically, a unified flexible framework, Adversarial Attributes (Adv-Attribute), is designed to generate inconspicuous and transferable attacks on face recognition, which crafts the adversarial noise and adds it into different attributes based on the guidance of the difference in face recognition features from the target. Moreover, the importance-aware attribute selection and the multi-objective optimization strategy are introduced to further ensure the balance of stealthiness and attacking strength. Extensive experiments on the FFHQ and CelebA-HQ datasets show that the proposed Adv-Attribute method achieves the state-of-the-art attacking success rates while maintaining better visual effects against recent attack methods., Comment: Accepted by NeurIPS2022

The attention mechanism has become the \emph{de facto} module in scene text recognition (STR) methods, due to its capability of extracting character-level representations. These methods can be summarized into implicit attention based and supervised attention based, depended on how the attention is computed, i.e., implicit attention and supervised attention are learned from sequence-level text annotations and or character-level bounding box annotations, respectively. Implicit attention, as it may extract coarse or even incorrect spatial regions as character attention, is prone to suffering from an alignment-drifted issue. Supervised attention can alleviate the above issue, but it is character category-specific, which requires extra laborious character-level bounding box annotations and would be memory-intensive when handling languages with larger character categories. To address the aforementioned issues, we propose a novel attention mechanism for STR, self-supervised implicit glyph attention (SIGA). SIGA delineates the glyph structures of text images by jointly self-supervised text segmentation and implicit attention alignment, which serve as the supervision to improve attention correctness without extra character-level annotations. Experimental results demonstrate that SIGA performs consistently and significantly better than previous attention-based STR methods, in terms of both attention correctness and final recognition performance on publicly available context benchmarks and our contributed contextless benchmarks., Comment: CVPR2023

Vision-based intelligent systems like automatic driving or driving assistance can be improved by enhancing the visibility of the scenes captured in bad weather conditions. In particular, many image dehazing algorithms (DHAs) have been proposed to facilitate such applications in hazy weather. Contrary to the substantial progress of DHA developing, the quality evaluation of DHAs falls behind. Generally, DHAs can be evaluated qualitatively by human subjects or quantitatively by objective quality measures. Compared with the subjective evaluation which is time consuming and difficult to apply, objective measures with quantitative results are more needed in practical systems. But in the literature, very few measures are widely utilized, and even less measures correlate well with the overall dehazing quality (DHQ). In this paper, we study the DHQ evaluation using real hazy images systematically. We first construct a DHQ database, which is the largest of its kind so far and includes 1750 dehazed images generated from 250 real hazy images of various haze densities using seven representative DHAs. A subjective quality evaluation study is subsequently conducted on the DHQ database. Then, we propose an objective DHQ index (DHQI) by extracting and fusing three groups of features, including: 1) haze-removing features; 2) structure-preserving features; and 3) over-enhancement features, which have captured the most key aspects of dehazing. DHQI can be utilized to evaluate DHAs or optimize practical dehazing systems. Validations on the constructed DHQ database and three other databases with synthetic haze have verified the effectiveness of DHQI. Finally, we give an overview of the current DHA quality evaluation strategies, discuss their merits and demerits, and give some suggestions on systematic DHA quality evaluation. The DHQ database and the code of DHQI will be released to facilitate further research.

Differentiable architecture search (DARTS) has been a popular one-shot paradigm for NAS due to its high efficiency. It introduces trainable architecture parameters to represent the importance of candidate operations and proposes first/second-order approximation to estimate their gradients, making it possible to solve NAS by gradient descent algorithm. However, our in-depth empirical results show that the approximation will often distort the loss landscape, leading to the biased objective to optimize and in turn inaccurate gradient estimation for architecture parameters. This work turns to zero-order optimization and proposes a novel NAS scheme, called ZARTS, to search without enforcing the above approximation. Specifically, three representative zero-order optimization methods are introduced: RS, MGS, and GLD, among which MGS performs best by balancing the accuracy and speed. Moreover, we explore the connections between RS/MGS and gradient descent algorithm and show that our ZARTS can be seen as a robust gradient-free counterpart to DARTS. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets and search spaces show the remarkable performance of our method. In particular, results on 12 benchmarks verify the outstanding robustness of ZARTS, where the performance of DARTS collapses due to its known instability issue. Also, we search on the search space of DARTS to compare with peer methods, and our discovered architecture achieves 97.54% accuracy on CIFAR-10 and 75.7% top-1 accuracy on ImageNet, which are state-of-the-art performance.

Neural architecture search (NAS) has been an active direction of automatic machine learning (Auto-ML), aiming to explore efficient network structures. The searched architecture is evaluated by training on datasets with fixed data augmentation policies. However, recent works on auto-augmentation show that the suited augmentation policies can vary over different structures. Therefore, this work considers the possible coupling between neural architectures and data augmentation and proposes an effective algorithm jointly searching for them. Specifically, 1) for the NAS task, we adopt a single-path based differentiable method with Gumbel-softmax reparameterization strategy due to its memory efficiency; 2) for the auto-augmentation task, we introduce a novel search method based on policy gradient algorithm, which can significantly reduce the computation complexity. Our approach achieves 97.91% accuracy on CIFAR-10 and 76.6% Top-1 accuracy on ImageNet dataset, showing the outstanding performance of our search algorithm.

Person search aims to simultaneously localize and identify a query person from realistic, uncropped images. To achieve this goal, state-of-the-art models typically add a re-id branch upon two-stage detectors like Faster R-CNN. Owing to the ROI-Align operation, this pipeline yields promising accuracy as re-id features are explicitly aligned with the corresponding object regions, but in the meantime, it introduces high computational overhead due to dense object anchors. In this work, we present an anchor-free approach to efficiently tackling this challenging task, by introducing the following dedicated designs. First, we select an anchor-free detector (i.e., FCOS) as the prototype of our framework. Due to the lack of dense object anchors, it exhibits significantly higher efficiency compared with existing person search models. Second, when directly accommodating this anchor-free detector for person search, there exist several major challenges in learning robust re-id features, which we summarize as the misalignment issues in different levels (i.e., scale, region, and task). To address these issues, we propose an aligned feature aggregation module to generate more discriminative and robust feature embeddings. Accordingly, we name our model as Feature-Aligned Person Search Network (AlignPS). Third, by investigating the advantages of both anchor-based and anchor-free models, we further augment AlignPS with an ROI-Align head, which significantly improves the robustness of re-id features while still keeping our model highly efficient. Extensive experiments conducted on two challenging benchmarks (i.e., CUHK-SYSU and PRW) demonstrate that our framework achieves state-of-the-art or competitive performance, while displaying higher efficiency. Person search has recently emerged as a challenging task that jointly addresses pedestrian detection and person re-identification. Existing approaches follow a fully supervised setting where both bounding box and identity annotations are available. However, annotating identities is labor-intensive, limiting the practicability and scalability of current frameworks. This paper inventively considers weakly supervised person search with only bounding box annotations. We proposed to address this novel task by investigating three levels of context clues (i.e., detection, memory and scene) in unconstrained natural images. The first two are employed to promote local and global discriminative capabilities, while the latter enhances clustering accuracy. Despite its simple design, our CGPS achieves 80.0% in mAP on CUHK-SYSU, boosting the baseline model by 8.8%. The computational vision community has recently paid attention to continual learning for blind image quality assessment (BIQA). The primary challenge is to combat catastrophic forgetting of previously-seen IQA datasets (i.e., tasks). In this paper, we present a simple yet effective continual learning method for BIQA with improved quality prediction accuracy, plasticity-stability trade-off, and task-order/-length robustness. The key step in our approach is to freeze all convolution filters of a pre-trained deep neural network (DNN) for an explicit promise of stability, and learn task-specific normalization parameters for plasticity. We assign each new task a prediction head, and load the corresponding normalization parameters to produce a quality score. The final quality estimate is computed by a weighted summation of predictions from all heads with a lightweight K-means gating mechanism, without leveraging the test-time oracle. In this paper, we propose a generic model transfer scheme to make Convlutional Neural Networks (CNNs) interpretable, while maintaining their high classification accuracy. We achieve this by building a differentiable decision forest on top of CNNs, which enjoys two characteristics: 1) During training, the tree hierarchies of the forest are learned in a top-down manner under the guidance from the category semantics embedded in the pre-trained CNN weights; 2) During inference, a single decision tree is dynamically selected from the forest for each input sample, enabling the transferred model to make sequential decisions corresponding to the attributes shared by semantically-similar categories, rather than directly performing flat classification. We name the transferred model deep Dynamic Sequential Decision Forest (dDSDF). Experimental results show that dDSDF not only achieves higher classification accuracy than its conuterpart, i.e., the original CNN, but has much better interpretability, as qualitatively it has plausible hierarchies and quantitatively it leads to more precise saliency maps.

The latent code of the recent popular model StyleGAN has learned disentangled representations thanks to the multi-layer style-based generator. Embedding a given image back to the latent space of StyleGAN enables wide interesting semantic image editing applications. Although previous works are able to yield impressive inversion results based on an optimization framework, which however suffers from the efficiency issue. In this work, we propose a novel collaborative learning framework that consists of an efficient embedding network and an optimization-based iterator. On one hand, with the progress of training, the embedding network gives a reasonable latent code initialization for the iterator. On the other hand, the updated latent code from the iterator in turn supervises the embedding network. In the end, high-quality latent code can be obtained efficiently with a single forward pass through our embedding network. Single-path based differentiable neural architecture search has great strengths for its low computational cost and memory-friendly nature. However, we surprisingly discover that it suffers from severe searching instability which has been primarily ignored, posing a potential weakness for a wider application. In this paper, we delve into its performance collapse issue and propose a new algorithm called RObustifying Memory-Efficient NAS (ROME). Specifically, 1) for consistent topology in the search and evaluation stage, we involve separate parameters to disentangle the topology from the operations of the architecture. In such a way, we can independently sample connections and operations without interference; 2) to discount sampling unfairness and variance, we enforce fair sampling for weight update and apply a gradient accumulation mechanism for architecture parameters. In video prediction tasks, one major challenge is to capture the multi-modal nature of future contents and dynamics. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective framework that can efficiently predict plausible future states. The key insight is that the potential distribution of a sequence could be approximated with analogous ones in a repertoire of training pool, namely, expert examples. By further incorporating a novel optimization scheme into the training procedure, plausible predictions can be sampled efficiently from distribution constructed from the retrieved examples. Meanwhile, our method could be seamlessly integrated with existing stochastic predictive models; significant enhancement is observed with comprehensive experiments in both quantitative and qualitative aspects. It has witnessed a growing demand for efficient representation learning on point clouds in many 3D computer vision applications. Behind the success story of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is that the data (e.g., images) are Euclidean structured. However, point clouds are irregular and unordered. Various point neural networks have been developed with isotropic filters or using weighting matrices to overcome the structure inconsistency on point clouds. However, isotropic filters or weighting matrices limit the representation power. In this paper, we propose a permutable anisotropic convolutional operation (PAI-Conv) that calculates soft-permutation matrices for each point using dot-product attention according to a set of evenly distributed kernel points on a sphere's surface and performs shared anisotropic filters. In fact, dot product with kernel points is by analogy with the dot-product with keys in Transformer as widely used in natural language processing (NLP). From this perspective, PAI-Conv can be regarded as the transformer for point clouds, which is physically meaningful and is robust to cooperate with the efficient random point sampling method. Comprehensive experiments on point clouds demonstrate that PAI-Conv produces competitive results in classification and semantic segmentation tasks compared to state-of-the-art methods.

In the era of multimedia and Internet, people are eager to obtain information from offline to online. Quick Response (QR) codes and digital watermarks help us access information quickly. However, QR codes look ugly and invisible watermarks can be easily broken in physical photographs. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method to embed hyperlinks into natural images, making the hyperlinks invisible for human eyes but detectable for mobile devices. Our method is an end-to-end neural network with an encoder to hide information and a decoder to recover information. From original images to physical photographs, camera imaging process will introduce a series of distortion such as noise, blur, and light. To train a robust decoder against the physical distortion from the real world, a distortion network based on 3D rendering is inserted between the encoder and the decoder to simulate the camera imaging process. Besides, in order to maintain the visual attraction of the image with hyperlinks, we propose a loss function based on just noticeable difference (JND) to supervise the training of encoder. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms the previous method in both simulated and real situations.

This paper addresses the problem of unsupervised clustering which remains one of the most fundamental challenges in machine learning and artificial intelligence. We propose the clustered generator model for clustering which contains both continuous and discrete latent variables. Discrete latent variables model the cluster label while the continuous ones model variations within each cluster. The learning of the model proceeds in a unified probabilistic framework and incorporates the unsupervised clustering as an inner step without the need for an extra inference model as in existing variational-based models. The latent variables learned serve as both observed data embedding or latent representation for data distribution. Our experiments show that the proposed model can achieve competitive unsupervised clustering accuracy and can learn disentangled latent representations to generate realistic samples. In addition, the model can be naturally extended to per-pixel unsupervised clustering which remains largely unexplored.

Temporal point process is an expressive tool for modeling event sequences over time. In this paper, we take a reinforcement learning view whereby the observed sequences are assumed to be generated from a mixture of latent policies. The purpose is to cluster the sequences with different temporal patterns into the underlying policies while learning each of the policy model. The flexibility of our model lies in: i) all the components are networks including the policy network for modeling the intensity function of temporal point process; ii) to handle varying-length event sequences, we resort to inverse reinforcement learning by decomposing the observed sequence into states (RNN hidden embedding of history) and actions (time interval to next event) in order to learn the reward function, thus achieving better performance or increasing efficiency compared to existing methods using rewards over the entire sequence such as log-likelihood or Wasserstein distance. We adopt an expectation-maximization framework with the E-step estimating the cluster labels for each sequence, and the M-step aiming to learn the respective policy. Augmented reality (AR) overlays digital content onto the reality. In AR system, correct and precise estimations of user's visual fixations and head movements can enhance the quality of experience by allocating more computation resources on the areas of interest. However, there is inadequate research about understanding the visual exploration of users when using an AR system or modeling AR visual attention. To bridge the gap between the saliency prediction on real-world scene and on scene augmented by virtual information, we construct the ARVR saliency dataset with 12 diverse videos viewed by 20 people. The virtual reality (VR) technique is employed to simulate the real-world. Annotations of object recognition and tracking as augmented contents are blended into the omnidirectional videos. The saliency annotations of head and eye movements for both original and augmented videos are collected and together constitute the ARVR dataset. We also design a model which is capable of solving the saliency prediction problem in AR. Local block images are extracted to simulate the viewport and offset the projection distortion. Conspicuous visual cues in local viewports are extracted to constitute the spatial features. The optical flow information is estimated as the important temporal feature. We also consider the interplay between virtual information and reality. The composition of the augmentation information is distinguished, and the joint effects of adversarial augmentation and complementary augmentation are estimated. We generate a graph by taking each block image as one node. Both the visual saliency mechanism and the characteristics of viewing behaviors are considered in the computation of edge weights on the graph which are interpreted as Markov chains. The fraction of the visual attention that is diverted to each block image is estimated through equilibrium distribution on of this chain.

This paper studies the object transfiguration problem in wild images. The generative network in classical GANs for object transfiguration often undertakes a dual responsibility: to detect the objects of interests and to convert the object from source domain to target domain. In contrast, we decompose the generative network into two separat networks, each of which is only dedicated to one particular sub-task. The attention network predicts spatial attention maps of images, and the transformation network focuses on translating objects. Attention maps produced by attention network are encouraged to be sparse, so that major attention can be paid to objects of interests. No matter before or after object transfiguration, attention maps should remain constant. In addition, learning attention network can receive more instructions, given the available segmentation annotations of images. Experimental results demonstrate the necessity of investigating attention in object transfiguration, and that the proposed algorithm can learn accurate attention to improve quality of generated images.

A variety of real-world processes (over networks) produce sequences of data whose complex temporal dynamics need to be studied. More especially, the event timestamps can carry important information about the underlying network dynamics, which otherwise are not available from the time-series evenly sampled from continuous signals. Moreover, in most complex processes, event sequences and evenly-sampled times series data can interact with each other, which renders joint modeling of those two sources of data necessary. To tackle the above problems, in this paper, we utilize the rich framework of (temporal) point processes to model event data and timely update its intensity function by the synergic twin Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). In the proposed architecture, the intensity function is synergistically modulated by one RNN with asynchronous events as input and another RNN with time series as input. Furthermore, to enhance the interpretability of the model, the attention mechanism for the neural point process is introduced. The whole model with event type and timestamp prediction output layers can be trained end-to-end and allows a black-box treatment for modeling the intensity. Finetuning from a pretrained deep model is found to yield state-of-the-art performance for many vision tasks. This paper investigates many factors that influence the performance in finetuning for object detection. There is a long-tailed distribution of sample numbers for classes in object detection. Our analysis and empirical results show that classes with more samples have higher impact on the feature learning. And it is better to make the sample number more uniform across classes. Generic object detection can be considered as multiple equally important tasks. Detection of each class is a task. These classes/tasks have their individuality in discriminative visual appearance representation. Taking this individuality into account, we cluster objects into visually similar class groups and learn deep representations for these groups separately. A hierarchical feature learning scheme is proposed. In this scheme, the knowledge from the group with large number of classes is transferred for learning features in its sub-groups. Finetuned on the GoogLeNet model, experimental results show 4.7% absolute mAP improvement of our approach on the ImageNet object detection dataset without increasing much computational cost at the testing stage., Comment: CVPR2016 camera ready version. Numerous single-image super-resolution algorithms have been proposed in the literature, but few studies address the problem of performance evaluation based on visual perception. While most super-resolution images are evaluated by fullreference metrics, the effectiveness is not clear and the required ground-truth images are not always available in practice. To address these problems, we conduct human subject studies using a large set of super-resolution images and propose a no-reference metric learned from visual perceptual scores. Specifically, we design three types of low-level statistical features in both spatial and frequency domains to quantify super-resolved artifacts, and learn a two-stage regression model to predict the quality scores of super-resolution images without referring to ground-truth images. This paper presents a joint bit allocation strategy for parallel HDTV video encoders. The basic idea is to partition a HDTV picture into six smaller sub-pictures, then compress each sub-picture using a cheap MPEG-2 MP@ML encoder. Without coordination among sub-encoders, these encoded sub-pictures may have unequal picture qualities. To maintain a uniform quality HDTV picture, the HDTV video encoder uses the joint bit allocation strategy based on the following two issues: (1) scene change detection and (2) picture complexity.
