South Korea has fewer public libraries than other developed nations of OECD. This calls for a more diverse role of school libraries in the geographically isolated areas. School libraries should provides services for not only its students and faculty, but also the surrounding neighborhood as a part of cultural community. Based on the needs for an expanded role of school libraries, this research aims to identify the necessary factors for school libraries to provide services to their local residents. Two things should be identified for this research. First, we should confirm the necessity of policies that provide library services to local residents of school libraries. Second, we should propose a way to have the libraries as a part of cultural community where meet the information and cultural demand of their local residents. The study surveyed users, school principals and working-level staff members of cultural communities in order to study the two questions. These groups were from Uri-school Village Library, which is supported by the NHN Culture Foundation. Through the survey, the research confirmed the need for a consistent outside assistance, job training, open door policy for local residents and diverse library services in order for school libraries to serve their local community.

This study is to describe the principles and outcome of the development for a classification scheme of presidential records to manage efficiently and provide them as archival information service productively. First, this scheme accommodates a management aspect, taking consideration into the aspect of archival records as the results of government administrative duties. Additionally, governance aspects are embraced into this scheme since presidential records can be seen as the results of governing purpose. We are considering the functional aspects of the public records too. As a result, this scheme adopts both management and governance aspect. Focusing on reflecting both functional and governance aspects, first analyzes existing classification systems in domestic and abroad. Finally, this study proposes 24 first-level, 114 second-level, and 179 third-level classification categories. Archivists and classification experts examined the classification scheme for verification by advisory meetings.

Various types of alternative format materials have been developed and acquired by libraries to improve information accessibility for people with disabilities. Although many cataloging standards contain specific rules designed to describe unique characteristics of these materials, most of these rules focus on describing braille books. This lack of alternative format-specific cataloging rules may hinder information accessibility for people with disabilities. This paper proposes revision, modification, and expansion of the Korean Cataloging Rules, 4th ed., and to Korean MARC (KORMARC) fields to address these problems and to comprehensively describe various types of alternative format materials. Although these changes are intended for the library community in South Korea, they may be relevant to other countries.

This research analyzed the type of major research and support services provided by libraries in academic institutions. The research also investigated the awareness of users using the research and support services. We found that the awareness was influenced by users` major and status. In particular, prior usage of the services had statistically significant result depending on users` major and status. On the other hand, the rank of faculty members or the year of study for students were found to not have a significant influence on the general perception of the research support services. We also found that researchers require the support services in every stages of their study. In addition, the preference of training method and research guidance for such services differed by users` major.

This research defines research support service, and compares the support service provided by college libraries in Korea and overseas. The findings showed that the frequency of college library service in Korean schools were low. Korean college libraries' services were mostly limited to the services of a normal library such as bibliographic education, full text service, and interlibrary loan service. To put it differently, Korean college libraries lacked information services on research ethics. Research spot services per research stage were mostly restricted to the data collection stage, and deficient elsewhere. On the other hand, college libraries in the U.S. were providing a platform for scholarly communication between researcher and scholars via websites.

This paper analyzes the quality of library services for disabled by studying the service of national public libraries and libraries for the disabled. The sample consists of 768 public libraries and 36 libraries for the disabled. The evaluation criteria is composed of six areas: general, amenities, substitute data, complementary device, source/information service, and culture program. The findings show various deviations depending on the library operator, contents and region. The research also shows that the service quality for the disabled is higher in libraries with specialized worker for this type of library services.

The art museums in South Korea are mostly small-scaled institutions with small amount of art works. Thus, internationally accepted metadata standards such as CDWA and VRA Core may not be efficient to manage their collections. Because of these distinct local characteristics, there is a need to create a set of metadata elements that can be used for the art museum community in the country. This research aims to propose a set of metadata elements customized to fit into the context of small-scaled art museums in South Korea. The construction of the element set was not from scratch but on the basis of existing standards such as CDWA, VRA Core, and Dublin Core. By identifying core elements that are indispensable in describing art works and collecting opinions of experts in art museums, the proposed set of metadata elements is expected to support the operation and management of art works and satisfy the localized needs of the art museum community.

This study analyzes types of primary sources cited by South Korean civil engineers. The results are as follows: 1) primary sources by preference are academic journal (55.7%), book (15.6%), seminar contents (10.2%). 2) documents published within last 10 years (26.1%) are cited most often. 3) domestic journal is the primary academic journal cited, and the finding is similar in preference of top-ranked primary reference (domestic and foreign combined). 4) In terms of time, domestic sources are preferred for up-to-date publications, and foreign sources for relatively non-recent publications. 5) The indices of influence and extemporaneity for both domestic and foreign sources do not show high numbers simultaneously.

This research has investigated the cyber university students' a wareness of the portal service of the digital library. In order to identify characteristics of the cyber university students, the research examined demographic characteristics of the students a nd library usage status. Awareness on the portal service was also analyzed in accordance with the characteristics of the users. The analysis showed that the most needed service was concise/full search service, which was the most frequently used service. The students were m ost satisfied with the liaison service; service awareness of several libraries showed statisti cally significant results depending on age, occupation. Based on the analysis, the research propose d the following measures to increase the use of the digital library of cyber university stu dents: active PR on library service, and intensifying the library user education. This research surveyed college students in Korea on their satisfaction for e-book services provided by university libraries. Their usage behavior was investigated, and the satisfaction rate for e-book usage and its service quality were analyzed to comprehend the status of e-book usage. The analysis showed that overall satisfaction for e-book service of university libraries was 2.93 on average. Moreover, the more frequently a student used the service, the more satisfied the student was; junior/senior-level and graduate school student groups showed higher satisfaction for e-book service than freshman and sophomore students. The most influential factor for satisfaction based on the e-book service quality was the content of the service, followed by the library support service system. Based on the findings, reinforcement of library public relations and user education, and the maintenance of the variety and up-to-date status of the contents were proposed to stimulate future university library e-book services.

This research compares and analyzes the legal deposit of national online electronic publishing and related laws that were recently amended in order to preserve the exponentially increasing number of electronic books(e-books). Based on the analysis, it also seeks ways to initiate a legal deposit system of e-books in South Korea. The research, therefore, defines the exact range and types of e-books. This research proposes three conditions to introduce the legal deposit system in order to preserve South Korean e-books. The first is to establish a clear definition and classification of e-books as data subject to legal deposit for preservation purposes. The second condition is to establish a legal system in order to deposit and collect network(online-exclusive) type e-books. The final condition is to reflect the opinion of publishers and to create security measures against any loss of the companies.

The amount of online scholarly information rapidly expands in n umerous resources, while user behavior demands single search box interface like Google S cholar. Despite scholarly values of e-resources libraries provide, users consider Google Scholar as the most efficient research tool attracted by its speed, simplicity, ease of use, and convenience. Characteristics of Metasearch System compared with Google Scholar are analyzed from perspectives of the interface and e-resource. National artifacts has the same physical characteristics to general artifacts and the evidential value which was produced during the public working. National artifacts different from paper and electronic records about physical properties. So it should be doing the expanded process. In this study, the ISAD(G), MODS, RAD and CDWA based on Korean Record Management Law by comparing and analysing of the technical elements was being extracted, The descriptive elements of national artifacts is pull by conclusion of the analysis.

In this study, we study on the actual conditions of which Korea n law school libraries are being operational. Because the successful law school library management means the success of the law school education, guarantees the success of expert education on our laws area. Therefore, this study propose the methods which is designing the content of the law school library website. As a result, an independent law school libraries are 21 (84%). During the law school library websites which are specialized contents with related the law are 15(71%). This website is based, menu of law school library's websites through the analysis of the content are analyzed. Based on this analysis, seven content com- position elements that should be service to law school library is proposed in this study. Since 1990s, major corporations and public organizations have actively implemented their own knowledge management, by which they develop new businesses and enhance organizational efficiencies. However, their knowledge management processes are sometimes isolated or mismatched with their record management systems and reveal many problems to operate and maintain them effectively. This paper analyzes the current status and problems of corporate knowledge management. Next, it proposes the necessity and the methods to integrate knowledge management and records management in order to transform corporate records as useful knowledge resources. Aligning corporate record management strategies with knowledge management policies enables to improve the management of corporate electronic records. Especially, the implementation of record retention schedule based on the life cycle management of records is emphasized as a KM governance strategy and method to manage corporate records effectively.

The National Assembly Library is leading the development of an integrated Electronic Theses and Dissertations system in Korea. A survey was conducted to identify the current management of electronic theses at twenty-six university libraries. Standardized metadata sets, PDF, and a hybrid system model are recommended.

This study suggested indispensable elements of metadata for electronic resource management and effectively manage of electronic resource in library. Therefore, this research analyzed into the data elements of DLF ERMI`s ERMS data structure, foreign three universities. The Data elements are verified by domestic ERM specialist. As the result, trial categories are 12 elements, consortium categories are 15 elements, license categories are 33 elements, electronic resource information categories are 21 elements, access/administrative information categories are 20 elements, usage statistics categories are 13 elements, workflow categories are 14 elements, contact information categories are 18 elements.

Grey literature is a non-Public data only for nonprofit users. Some of the major grey literatures are technical report, Proceeding, and thesis. For their Promptitude, these sources are core of research and development. According to a research on the academic qualify. grey literatures have higher usage rates than books-articles excluded. Also, the usage of foreign grey literature by librarians of research organization was investigated. The result was that over 90 percent of the researchers were demanding the original text of the foreign grey literature. In addition, librarians pointed out that the time-consuming problem and the lack of published information was a hindrance to using grey literature. For the centralized management of grey literature. they wanted an alliance structure.

This paper proposes some guidelines for Korean standards for statistical metadata to share on the Internet. The construction includes the minimum metadata set needed in the international standards based on the report and Korean Statistics Office. In result, 29 categories were selected from the SDMX and SDDS’consistency items and 14 categories from Dublin Core. Overall, 43 international statistics metadata was completed.

In this study, the way of the automatic text categorization on web-based query was implemented. X2 methods based on the Supported Vector Machine were used to test the efficiency of text categorization on queries. This test is carried out by the model using the Synonymy List. 713 synonyms were extracted manually from the tested documents. As the result of this test, the precision ratio and the recall ratio were decreased by -0.01% and by 8.53%, respectively whether the synonyms were assigned or not. It also shows that the Value of F1 Measure was increased by 4.58%. The standard deviation between the recall and precision ratio was improve by 18.39%.

In this study, the experiment was made to transform the relationship among terms in a thesaurus to ontology language as search tools for multilingual text. As a result, the equivalent relationship in the thesaurus can be expressed by different ways in the ontology, such as equivalentClass, equivalentProperty, sameAS, and so on. On the other hand, the associative relationship can be represented by ObjectProperty, DatatypeProperty, and inverseOf. For this test, first of all, the descriptors assigned by AAT and the descriptors from bilingual thesaurus by ICCD were translated into Korean. Then, the facet was used for conceptual equivalence among terms from different languages. The result of the study showed that using rdf:Property in ontology was the most effective way of transforming multilingual thesaurus into ontology.

This is the comparative study about analyzing the methodologies of building ontology with IEEE Standard 1074-1997. The methodologies are chosen to be analyzed. They are OTK, CommanKADS, ONIONS and Noy & McGuinness`s Ontology Development 101. On the basis of analyzing, the ontology development process is proposed after the strong points of four methodologies are accepted but the weak points of them are supplemented. The sixth development steps are following: 1) Conducting the feasibility study about ontology building as the pre-development process 2) Setting up the purpose of the ontology development as the starting point of the building 3) Considering the integration of the existing ontologies for the knowledge reuse 4) Constructing the ontology by defining the concepts and relations 5) Evaluating and testing the ontology for the completeness 6) Containing the ontology maintenance for the sustainable use.

The aim of this article is to study the new searching tool for era of multimedia. Thesaurus is a useful tool but is constituted with noun phrase including the adjective for retrieving the human Sensibility. Therefore, I experimentally construct the Sensibility thesaurus using the color scale which contains the Sensibility meanings. Terms are 261, Relation standards are distance and ratio of reiteration between the terms. I would use an exclusive program of the thesaurus construction for Sensibility adjective.

This research suggests the method of standardizing terms for raising the effectiveness of information retrieval. Especially for web search, I propose the proper terms which they will use in retrieval by surveying and analysing the related terms about information retrieval interface. The proper terms will solve the equivocation for user increase the effectiveness. And I think the proposed terms will be used to standard data for designers who are construct the user interface systems.

The purposes of the study were to identify the characteristics and types of grey literatures, to investigate the factors restricting the sharing of grey literatures in Korea, and to make recommendations for the efficient collection and utilization system of grey literatures being produced and managed by either government agencies or government-supported research institutes in Korea. A survey instrument was designed to measure the current status of grey literature management systems and to elicit expert opinions from information professionals in information centers for an efficient system of grey literatures. It was found that information professionals considered the technical reports as the most important type of grey literatures, but maps and dissertations as the least important type of information value. Related to the participation for the central system of grey literatures, many respondents preferred to utilize the grey literatures owned by other information centers, but they showed a neutral interest level in sharing their information centers` grey literatures with other centers.
