Roseomonas mucosa (R. mucosa) is a pink-pigmented, aerobic, nonfermentative, slow-growing Gram-negative coccus typically isolated from the natural environment, human skin, and hospital environment. This pathogen, in most circumstances, leads to infections in immunocompromised hosts, but it may sometimes invade immunocompetent individuals. Bacteraemia is the most common form of infection caused by R. mucosa. In contrast, only two case reports have described R. mucosa-related epidural abscess formation and infective spondylitis. In this case report, we shared the history and treatment experience of a 76-year-old female who was diagnosed with infective spondylitis and epidural abscess caused by R. mucosa. She received a local transdermal injection into the lower back to relieve her back pain two months before symptom onset, which was considered to be associated with this infection episode. After admission to the hospital, neurosurgeons performed emergent decompression and debridement. She was treated with intravenous ceftriaxone for four weeks, followed by oral ciprofloxacin for another eight weeks. The patient recovered well without any sequelae and had no relapse of infection at least six months after the end of treatment. In addition to the case report, we reviewed the literature for reported cases caused by R. mucosa. Our experience suggests that clinicians should include R. mucosa as one of the possible healthcare-associated pathogens among individuals who have undergone transdermal procedures. We believe that this article will help clinicians better recognize R. mucosa infection.

Background: Maternal health literacy (MHL) is essential in identifying pregnant women with limited MHL, especially in the post-COVID-19 period. The data can assist in the design of tailored interventions for improving MHL. Nevertheless, MHL measurements are not routinely applied because more general health literacy scales are used to assess MHL in pregnancy. Objective: This study aimed to provide an overview of MHL measurement development. Method: A scoping review was utilized in this study. The search was conducted through four electronic databases (CINAHL, PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct) published in English and Indonesian between 2001 to 2021, with the searching process of PCC (Population: pregnant women, Concept: maternal health literacy instrument development, Context: clinical or community setting). The selection process of the articles is referred to as Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Result: The selected articles' critical appraisal was done using The Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist. The measurements of MHL are Maternal Health Literacy and Pregnancy Outcome Questionnaire (MHLAPQ), Maternal Health Literacy (MaHeLi), and Maternal Health Literacy Inventory in Pregnancy (MHELIP). These instruments are adequate, valid, and reliable. The MHELIP is the fittest instrument to capture the MHL concept because it consists of specific items to measure MHL in pregnancy. Future studies must investigate this topic as thoroughly as the current material available in some databases. In addition, healthcare practitioners can apply the MHL in pregnancy measurement to analyze and report client cases, contributing to the expansion of MHL's body knowledge.

Physiological homeostasis becomes compromised during ageing, as a result of impairment of cellular processes, including transcription and RNA splicing1–4. However, the molecular mechanisms leading to the loss of transcriptional fidelity are so far elusive, as are ways of preventing it. Here we profiled and analysed genome-wide, ageing-related changes in transcriptional processes across different organisms: nematodes, fruitflies, mice, rats and humans. The average transcriptional elongation speed (RNA polymerase II speed) increased with age in all five species. Along with these changes in elongation speed, we observed changes in splicing, including a reduction of unspliced transcripts and the formation of more circular RNAs. Two lifespan-extending interventions, dietary restriction and lowered insulin–IGF signalling, both reversed most of these ageing-related changes. Genetic variants in RNA polymerase II that reduced its speed in worms5 and flies6 increased their lifespan. Similarly, reducing the speed of RNA polymerase II by overexpressing histone components, to counter age-associated changes in nucleosome positioning, also extended lifespan in flies and the division potential of human cells. Our findings uncover fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying animal ageing and lifespan-extending interventions, and point to possible preventive measures.

Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of ortho-alkenyl bromobenzenes and α-aryl-α-diazoesters was realized. The reactions proceeded in moderate to excellent yields with broad substrate scope, providing a straightforward method for the synthesis of 1,1-disubstituted indenes. The reaction is thought to undergo a tandem alkenyl C–H activation/carbene insertion sequence, in which a C,C-pallada(II)cycle is the key intermediate.

Physical and virtual labs have unique capabilities that can influence how students learn from them. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of physical and virtual manipulatives on students’ learning of heat and temperature and to examine the influence of various combinations of physical and virtual manipulatives. A total of 205 participants were divided into four groups: only physical manipulatives, only virtual manipulatives, physical-virtual manipulatives, and virtual-physical manipulatives. Students’ knowledge acquisition was tested using Pre-test–Post-test design. The results showed that physical and virtual manipulatives are as effective in facilitating students’ learning of state changes, but virtual manipulatives are more beneficial to students’ learning of thermal expansion and contraction than physical manipulatives are. Physical-virtual manipulatives are more effective than virtual-physical manipulatives or physical manipulatives alone are to promote students’ learning of heat and temperature, but this effect is similar to that of virtual manipulatives alone. The results suggest that virtual laboratories can effectively model abstract concepts. The better effect of the physical-virtual operation sequence on learning does not depend on whether the two types of experiments are combined or on the sequence of operations but on the type of experiment when its advantages actually contribute to learning. Collisional resonances are an important tool which has been used to modify interactions in ultracold gases, for realizing novel Hamiltonians in quantum simulations, for creating molecules from atomic gases and for controlling chemical reactions. So far, such resonances have been observed for atom-atom collisions, atom-molecule collisions and collisions between Feshbach molecules which are very weakly bound. Whether such resonances exist for ultracold ground state molecules has been debated due to the possibly high density of states and/or rapid decay of the resonant complex. Here we report a very pronounced and narrow (25 mG) Feshbach resonance in collisions between two ground state NaLi molecules. This molecular Feshbach resonance has two special characteristics. First, the collisional loss rate is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude above the background loss rate which is saturated at the $p$-wave universal value, due to strong chemical reactivity. Second, the resonance is located at a magnetic field where two open channels become nearly degenerate. This implies the intermediate complex predominantly decays to the second open channel. We describe the resonant loss feature using a model with coupled modes which is analogous to a Fabry-P\'erot cavity. Our observations prove the existence of long-lived coherent intermediate complexes even in systems without reaction barriers and open up the possibility of coherent control of chemical reactions.

As one of the important structures of composite materials, polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam sandwich structure is prone to debonding and delamination defects during manufacturing and service, which seriously affects the mechanical properties of materials. Therefore, it is necessary to detect the defects of foam sandwich structure. A linear frequency modulation infrared thermal wave nondestructive testing system was built to study the correlation between the geometric characteristics (diameter and depth) of the defect and the surface temperature signal and its influence on the detection effect. The image sequence is processed by principal component analysis, discrete Fourier transform, thermal wave signal reconstruction, and other algorithms. Studies have shown that the larger the defect diameter, the shallower the depth, easy to detect defects, detection effect is good. The detection system can effectively detect and identify debonding and de-lamination defects. The thermal wave signal reconstruction method is superior to the principal component analysis method and the discrete Fourier transform method in the signal-to-noise ratio index, which improves the quality of the image and is conducive to the effective identification of the image surface defect information.

Despite the central role of IFN-γ in vitiligo pathogenesis, systemic IFN-γ neutralization is an impractical treatment option owing to strong immunosuppression. However, most patients with vitiligo present with20% affected body surface area, which provides an opportunity for localized treatments that avoid systemic side effects. After identifying keratinocytes as key cells that amplify IFN-γ signaling during vitiligo, we hypothesized that tethering an IFN-γ‒neutralizing antibody to keratinocytes would limit anti‒IFN-γ effects on the treated skin for the localized treatment. To that end, we developed a bispecific antibody capable of blocking IFN-γ signaling while binding to desmoglein expressed by keratinocytes. We characterized the effect of the bispecific antibody in vitro, ex vivo, and in a mouse model of vitiligo. Single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography biodistribution and serum assays after local footpad injection revealed that the bispecific antibody had improved skin retention, faster elimination from the blood, and less systemic IFN-γ inhibition than the nontethered version. Furthermore, the bispecific antibody conferred localized protection almost exclusively to the treated footpad during vitiligo, which was not possible by local injection of the nontethered anti‒IFN-γ antibody. Thus, keratinocyte tethering proved effective while significantly diminishing the off-tissue effects of IFN-γ blockade, offering a safer treatment strategy for localized skin diseases, including vitiligo.

Pharmacological attenuation of mTOR presents a promising route for delay of age-related disease. Here we show that treatment of Drosophila with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin extends lifespan in females, but not in males. Female-specific, age-related gut pathology is markedly slowed by rapamycin treatment, mediated by increased autophagy. Treatment increases enterocyte autophagy in females, via the H3/H4 histone-Bchs axis, whereas males show high basal levels of enterocyte autophagy that are not increased by rapamycin feeding. Enterocyte sexual identity, determined by transformerFemale expression, dictates sexually dimorphic cell size, H3/H4-Bchs expression, basal rates of autophagy, fecundity, intestinal homeostasis and lifespan extension in response to rapamycin. Dimorphism in autophagy is conserved in mice, where intestine, brown adipose tissue and muscle exhibit sex differences in autophagy and response to rapamycin. This study highlights tissue sex as a determining factor in the regulation of metabolic processes by mTOR and the efficacy of mTOR-targeted, anti-aging drug treatments.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is a ligand-dependent nuclear receptor and highly expressed in human and rodent lungs. 15-Deoxy-delta-All 130 fasting blood samples and 40 lung specimens were obtained from COPD patients and control subjects. Serum 15d-PGJ2 was detected by ELISA. The expressions of oxidative stress indicators were measured using western blotting and PPARγ nuclei were evaluated with immunohistochemistry in lungs. The associations among serum 15d-PGJ2, pulmonary PPARγ and oxidative stress indicators, and COPD were estimated.Serum 15d-PGJ2 was reduced in COPD patients compared with healthy volunteers. Linear and logistic regression analysis indicated that serum 15d-PGJ2 was positively associated with pulmonary function in COPD patients. In addition, PPARγ-positive nuclei were reduced and oxidative stress indicators, included HO-1 and NOX-4, were increased in lungs of COPD patients. Further correlative analysis suggested that pulmonary function parameters was positively correlated with serum 15d-PGJ2 and pulmonary PPARγ-positive nuclei, inversely related to oxidative stress indicators in lungs of COPD patients. Pretreatment with 15d-PGJ2 obviously attenuated TNFα-induced oxidative stress in BEAS-2B cells.Serum 15d-PGJ2 and pulmonary PPARγ are reduced, and oxidative stress is elevated in COPD patients. Serum 15d-PGJ2 is inversely associated with oxidative stress in COPD patients.

Airway remodeling is one of the hallmarks of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is closely related to the dysregulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Smad3, an important transcriptional regulator responsible for transducing TGF-β1 signals, is a promising target for EMT modulation. We found that ligustilide (Lig), a novel Smad3 covalent inhibitor, effectively inhibited airway remodeling in cigarette smoke (CS) combined with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced COPD mice. Oral administration of an alkynyl-modified Lig probe was used to capture and trace target proteins in mouse lung tissue, revealing Smad3 in airway epithelium as a key target of Lig. Protein mass spectrometry and Smad3 mutation analysis via in-gel imaging indicated that the epoxidized metabolite of Lig covalently binds to the MH2 domain of Smad3 at Cys331/337. This irreversible bonding destroys the interaction of Smad3-SARA, prevents Smad3 phosphorylation activation, and subsequently suppresses the nuclear transfer of p-Smad3, the EMT process, and collagen deposition in TGF-β1-stimulated BEAS-2B cells and COPD mice. These findings provide experimental support that Lig attenuates COPD by repressing airway remodeling which is attributed to its suppression on the activation of EMT process in the airway epithelium via targeting Smad3 and inhibiting the recruitment of the Smad3-SARA heterodimer in the TGF-β1/Smad3 pathway.

The genus Leptobrachella is a species-rich genus of megophrid frog. Rapid discovery of many new species within this genus emphasizes the importance of regional research. In this study, we describe a new species of Leptobrachella, Leptobrachella verrucosasp. nov., from northwestern Guangdong Province, China, based on a combination of molecular and morphological data. A key including congeners from the same province, namely L. laui, L. liui, L. mangshanensis, L. shimentaina, and L. yunkaiensis, is provided.

Mineral-based bulk structural materials (MBSMs) are known for their long history and extensive range of usage. The inherent brittleness of minerals poses a major problem to the performance of MBSMs. To overcome this problem, design principles have been extracted from natural biominerals, in which the extraordinary mechanical performance is achieved via the hierarchical organization of minerals and organics. Nevertheless, precise and efficient fabrication of MBSMs with bioinspired hierarchical structures under mild conditions has long been a big challenge. This Perspective provides a panoramic view of an emerging fabrication strategy, matrix-directed mineralization, which imitates the in vivo growth of some biominerals. The advantages of the strategy are revealed by comparatively analyzing the conventional fabrication techniques of artificial hierarchically structured MBSMs and the biomineral growth processes. By introducing recent advances, we demonstrate that this strategy can be used to fabricate artificial MBSMs with hierarchical structures. Particular attention is paid to the mass transport and the precursors that are involved in the mineralization process. We hope this Perspective can provide some inspiring viewpoints on the importance of biomimetic mineralization in material fabrication and thereby spur the biomimetic fabrication of high-performance MBSMs.

Rete middle cerebral artery (MCA) anomaly is characterized by a web-like network of arteries involving the first MCA segment (M1) and a normal downstream MCA. The detailed composition of this anomaly and the hemodynamic impacts on cerebral perfusion are rarely addressed. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the anatomical and hemodynamic perspectives of the rete MCA anomaly.From August 2020 to December 2021, 4 rete MCA anomalies were identified at Shuang Ho hospital. Clinical information, perfusion magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and angiographic images were collected. Detailed angioarchitecture, including types of arterial feeders and extent of rete involvement, were analyzed based on three-dimensional volume-rendering reconstruction images obtained from the catheter-based angiographies.Despite their variable clinical presentations (two hemorrhage, one ischemia, and one asymptomatic), all cases shared common angiographic findings as follows: (1) the internal carotid artery did not connect directly to the rete, (2) the anterior choroidal artery (AChA) was the artery constantly supplying the rete and (3) there was a watershed zone shift toward MCA territory. The perfusion MR cerebral blood flow map was symmetric in all studied cases.The AChA is an artery constantly supplying the rete, which suggests that the angioarchitectural features associated with this anomaly may be the result of both congenital and acquired compensatory processes. Cerebral perfusion remains preserved at the lesion side, despite angiographic evidence of watershed zone shift. These findings will be important for making better clinical judgments about this condition.

To estimate the variations in clinical target volumes (CTVs) and organs at risk delineation within the quality assurance (QA) program of the POTENTIAL trial, which is a multicenter, randomized phase 3 trial evaluating postmastectomy radiation therapy (RT), with or without internal mammary nodal irradiation, for patients with high-risk breast cancer.The simulating computed tomography scan data set of a benchmark case was sent to the participating centers, and the delineation of CTVs and organs at risk was required to be completed by the investigators following protocol guidelines. All submitted contours were reviewed and compared with the reference contours created by the QA team, using quantitative geometric analysis regarding volume and the Jaccard Index (JCI), Dice similarity coefficient, Geographic Miss Index, Discordance Index, and mean distance to agreement. In addition to the whole-volume analysis of all structures, the combination contour of the supraclavicular fossa and level III and II axilla (CTVsc + axIII + axII) was further analyzed on a slice-by-slice basis.The contours from 26 centers were reviewed and variations were observed between submission and reference. The variations of the CTV of the chest wall, contralateral breast, and heart were small, for which the mean JCI values were 0.62, 0.68, and 0.87, respectively. However, the mean JCI values of the CTV of the internal mammary nodal region, ipsilateral brachial plexus, left anterior descending coronary artery, and right coronary artery were 0.38, 0.21, 0.29, and 0.18, respectively, suggesting marked variations. In addition, marked under- and overoutlining variations were identified on 4 slices of CTVsc + axIII + axII on slice-by-slice analysis.There were residual contouring variations despite a detailed protocol being provided, confirming the importance of pretrial QA in RT and highlighting the need for education and consideration of a real-time central review of the target delineation before the trial participants begin RT.

Introduction: Total brachial plexus injury not only significantly affects the motor and sensory function of the affected upper limbs but also causes further physical and mental damage to patients with long-term intractable pain. Previous studies mainly focused on the surgical treatment, while only a few paid attention to the intractable neuropathic pain caused by this injury. Changes in the volume of gray matter in the brain are thought to be associated with chronic neuropathic pain. Methods: Voxel-based morphometry analysis was used to compare the difference in cerebral gray matter volume between total brachial plexus injury patients with neuropathic pain and healthy controls. Correlations between pain duration, pain severity, and GM changes were analyzed. Results: The volume of cerebral gray matter in the patient group was decreased significantly in multiple regions, including the parahippocampal gyrus, paracentric lobule, inferior frontal gyrus, auxiliary motor cortex, middle occipital gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, while it was increased in the insular, pons, middle frontal gyrus, cingulate gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, bilateral thalamus, and globus pallidus. There were no significant correlations between pain duration and rGMV changes, while a positive correlation was observed between pain severity and rGMV changes in one specific region, involving the anterior cingulate cortex. Conclusion: Total brachial plexus injury patients with chronic pain have widespread regions of gray matter atrophy and hypertrophy. The only positive correlation was observed between pain severity and rGMV changes in one specific region, suggesting that nociceptive stimuli trigger a variety of nonpain-specific processes, which confirms the multidimensional nature of pain.

Previous studies on Chinese dialect variation have mostly focused on the description of dialects, the regions where these dialects are spoken, attitudes towards dialects, and acoustic differences across dialects. The present study draws on experimental evidence concerning a vowel difference in two Taiwan Southern Min (TSM) dialects to provide more understanding on how non-contrastive, dialectal variations may affect speakers’ processing of speech. The variation of interest is a phonemic difference, [ə] and [ɔ], in the vowel inventory in two TSM dialects, in which the difference signals a lexical contrast in one dialect (e.g. [ə-a] ‘oyster’ vs. [ɔ-a] ‘taro’) but not in the other ([ɔ-a] ‘oyster, taro’). A long-term repetition-priming experiment investigating the word recognition involving the two vowels revealed a dialect effect on TSM speakers’ word recognition in accordance with prior exposure, native-ness and variant frequency. Implications of the findings are provided.

PurposeIn this paper, Yale model was adopted to understand how the characteristics of a green message (goal framing, argument volume and argument consistency), its source (source credibility) and its receivers (environmental consciousness) influence the communication process regarding the receivers' perceptions and attitudes (information value, persuasiveness and communication effectiveness) and their intention to spread the green message.Design/methodology/approachEight scenarios of factorial design were developed to test the effects of a message on receivers' perceptions and attitudes. 1,157 valid questionnaires were used to conduct AMOS-SEM and ANOVA analyses.FindingsThe analytical results showed significant differences between the persuasive effects of Scenarios 1 and 8. A high level of environmental consciousness significantly affected the relationships between the message characteristics, source credibility and information value, leading to a higher intention to share the green messages.Research limitations/implicationsThe Yale model was applied to online persuasion to examine the receivers' perceptions of and attitudes toward a green message and their intention to share it on social networking sites (SNSs). Being environmentally conscious can strengthen the perception that the receivers of an online green message have of the source credibility and information value. The Yale model proved to represent the online green message-sharing context and explain how to persuade online users more effectively.Practical implicationsThis study suggests that green message providers should present content emphasizing the losses associated with inaction, thus increasing the receivers' acceptance of the message's persuasiveness. Additionally, with the assistance of supportive measures, such as national education programs, government policies and actions showing corporate social responsibility, the environmental awareness of individuals can encourage them to share green message posts on SNSs and engage in green practices.Social implicationsA significant effect of the message characteristics (goal framing × argument volume × argument consistency) was observed on SNS users' perceived source credibility and information value. Therefore, key opinion leaders, governments, and organizations who want to promote green ideas and attract public attention are encouraged to provide messages emphasizing the costs of inaction and contain arguments with a sufficient number of responses strongly supporting the original message. This could arouse the concern for green issues among online communities.Originality/valueA Yale model research framework was developed to investigate the effect of message characteristics on the intention to share green messages online. Receivers' environmental consciousness played a vital role in this message-sharing process.

Dissipation, often associated with plasmons, leads to decoherence and is generally considered fatal for quantum nonlinearities and entanglement. Counterintuitively, by introducing a dissipative plasmonic nanoantenna into a typical cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system, we unveil the wide existence of the atom-photon quasi-bound state (qBS), a kind of exotic eigenstate with anomalously small decay, in the hybrid plasmonic-photonic cavity. To derive the analytical condition of atom-photon qBS, we formulate a quantized two-mode model of the local density of states by connecting the interacting uncoupled cavity modes to the macroscopic QED. With resonant plasmon-photon coupling, we showcase the single-atom qBS that improves the efficiency of single-photon generation over one order of magnitude; and the two-atom qBS that significantly enhances spontaneous entanglement generation compared with a bare photonic cavity. Notably, such single-atom and multi-atom qBS can be simultaneously accessed in realistic plasmonic-photonic cavities, providing a versatile platform for advanced quantum technologies, such as quantum light sources, quantum computation, and quantum information.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how sales compensation disclosure, salespeople’s perception of corporate social responsibility (CSR) toward customers (i.e. customer-focused CSR), regulatory knowledge and coworkers’ ethical behavior may influence life insurance salespeople’s moral intensity and intentions to engage in misleading sales behaviors. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses are analyzed using partial least squares (PLS) regression with the data gathered from full-time life insurance salespeople in Taiwan. Findings The main findings indicate that disclosing sales compensations will alter the ethical decision-making process of life insurance salespeople. The findings further point out that customer-focused CSR is an important variable affecting moral intensity and ethical intentions. Originality/value There has not been any research on the effects of compensation disclosure on moral intensity and misleading sales behavior. The literature gap has led to a poor understanding of the relationship between the compensation disclosure policy and ethical sales behavior. Moreover, previous studies indicate that specific factors (such as moral intensity and ethical intention) are directly associated, while the research shows that as long as a regulatory policy (e.g. the policy of compensation disclosure) changes, the correlation between these variables may shift from significant to nonsignificant (or vice versa). The results are interesting enough to warrant more research, and they also show that the direct link between variables mentioned in previous research is not always stable or universal.
