Immunotherapies are now emerging as an efficient anticancer therapeutic strategy. Cancer immunotherapy utilizes the host's immune system to fight against cancer cells and has gained increasing interest due to its durable efficacy and low toxicity compared to traditional antitumor treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy (RT). Although the combination of RT and immunotherapy has drawn extensive attention in the clinical setting, the overall response rates are still low. Therefore, strategies for further improvement are urgently needed. Nanotechnology has been used in cancer immunotherapy and RT to target not only cancer cells but also the tumor microenvironment (TME), thereby helping to generate a long-term immune response. Nanomaterials can be an effective delivery system and a strong autophagy inducer, with the ability to elevate autophagy to very high levels. Interestingly, autophagy could play a critical role in optimal immune function, mediating cell-extrinsic homeostatic effects through the regulation of danger signaling in neoplastic cells under immunogenic chemotherapy and/or RT. In this review, we summarize the preclinical and clinical development of the combination of immunotherapy and RT in cancer therapy and highlight the latest progress in nanotechnology for augmenting the anticancer effects of immunotherapy and RT. The underlying mechanisms of nanomaterial-triggered autophagy in tumor cells and the TME are discussed in depth. Finally, we suggest the implications of these three strategies combined together to achieve the goal of maximizing the therapeutic advantages of cancer therapy and show recent advances in biomarkers for tumor response in the evaluation of those therapies.

A high-density strategy of optimizing packing fraction by increasing the quantity of thermocouples, which could enhance output performance and mitigate power depletion simultaneously, has been successfully demonstrated.

Background To cure advanced hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC), primary operation followed by adjuvant (chemo-)radiotherapy (OP-CRT) or definitive chemoradiation (CCRT) are the two primary options. This study aimed to compare the failure patterns and long-term survival outcomes of HPSCC patients treated with these two strategies. Patients and Methods From 2007 to 2015, 198 pathologically confirmed HPSCC patients receiving either OP-CRT or CCRT were retrospectively reviewed. Failure patterns and survival outcomes stratified by the 7th American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system and treatment modalities were compared. Results One hundred and eighty-nine patients (95.4%) were stage III/IV and 62 patients (31.3%) received OP-CRT. Median follow-up duration was 4.9 years. Compared with CCRT, OP-CRT provided better 3-year local relapse-free survival for T3 (93 vs 48%, p < 0.0001), T4a (88 vs 37%, p = 0.0005) and better 3-year regional relapse-free survival for N2b+2c (93 vs 60%, p < 0.0001). Of note, for stage IVA subjects, OP-CRT provided better 3-year loco-regional relapse-free survival (85 vs 37%, p < 0.0001), marginal poor 3-year distant metastasis-free survival (62 vs 79%, p = 0.06), but comparable 3-year OS (52 vs 44%, p = 0.37) and 5-year OS (44 vs 31%, p = 0.15) compared with CCRT. Conclusions For patients with advanced HPSCC, although OP-CRT and CCRT provided similar overall survival, failure patterns were distinct. OP-CRT provided better loco-regional control but was more likely to encounter distant metastases than CCRT. The detailed analysis of failure patterns will pave the way to improve this devastating disease.

(1) Background: To investigate the contralateral neck failure (cRF) rates and outcomes among patients with well-lateralized locally advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with/without ipsilateral or bilateral neck adjuvant irradiation. (2) Methods: Patients with lateralized OSCC diagnosed between 2007 and 2017 were retrospectively enrolled. Patients who had undergone curative surgery with pathologically proven pT3/4 or pN0-2b without distant metastasis were included, while those with cross-midline, neck-level 1a involvement and positive extra-nodal extension (ENE) were excluded. The primary endpoint was the cumulative incidence of 5-year cRF as the first site of failure. The secondary endpoints included cancer-specific survival (CSS), local-regional recurrence-free survival (LRRFS), distant-metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and contralateral-regional recurrence-free survival (cRRFS). (3) Results: In total, 149 patients were analyzed with a median follow-up time of 5.2 years (range, 2.91–7.83). Pathological stages T3 and T4 were 22.7% and 56.8%, respectively. Pathologically negative and positive lymph nodes were 61.4% and 38.6%, respectively. The cumulative 5-year cRF rate was 3.6% (95% CI, 1.3–7.7%). No significant differences in the 5-year CSS, LRRFS, DMFS, and cRRFS were observed among those undergoing unilateral or bilateral neck irradiation. Five patients (3.4%) had contralateral neck recurrence, all simultaneously with local recurrence. No isolated contralateral neck recurrence was identified. (4) Conclusions: The cRF rate was acceptably low in patients with well-lateralized advanced OSCC with the initially uninvolved contralateral neck. Omitting contralateral neck irradiation with active surveillance could be considered without compromising the cure rate in locally advanced OSCC patients.

High performance dielectric capacitors are ubiquitous components in the modern electronics industry, owing to the highest power density, fastest charge-discharge rates, and long lifetime. However, the wide application of dielectric capacitors is limited owing to the low energy density. Over the past decades, multiscale structures of dielectric ceramics have been extensively explored and many exciting developments have been achieved. Despite the rapid development of energy storage properties, the atomic structure of dielectric materials is rarely investigated. In this paper, we present a brief overview of how scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is used as a tool to elucidate the morphology, local structure heterogeneity, atomic resolution structure phase evolution and the correlation with energy storage properties, which provides a powerful tool for rational design and synergistic optimization.

Pulmonary artery sarcoma (PAS) is a sporadic malignant tumor that mainly originates from the pulmonary arteries. However, PAS may also involve the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and lead to obstruction, syncope, or sudden death. Early diagnosis and complete surgical resection are essential to prolong survival and improve the quality of life of patients with PAS. Herein, we report a case of a young female patient admitted for pulmonary malignancy and acute pulmonary embolism. The patient had a mass in the RVOT, which was detected by transthoracic echocardiography. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the invasion depth and extent of the lesions. Surgical resection improved hemodynamics, while pathological and immunohistochemical tests confirmed the diagnosis of a pulmonary artery sarcoma. Local recurrence was detected in the adjacent tissues about two months after the surgery. Given the potential risk of reoperation, the patient was suggested to undergo conservative treatment.

Ceramic capacitors are ubiquitously used in high power and pulse power applications, but their low energy density, especially at high temperatures (>150 °C), limits their fields of application. One of the reasons is the low energy efficiency under high electric fields and/or at high temperatures. In this work, equimolar Sm3+ and Ti4+ cations were doped in NaNbO3 to increase relaxor characteristics and energy storage properties. The optimal recoverable energy density Wrec of 6.5 J/cm3 and energy efficiency η of 96% were attained in the ceramics with 10% (Sm, Ti) concentration (SmT10). Dense microstructure and low dielectric loss were attributed to the high energy storage performance. Impedance spectra analysis revealed that the grain boundary resistance dominates at low temperatures, while the grain resistance dominates at high temperatures. The ceramics show stable Wrec and η in a broad temperature range of −90 to 200 °C and repeated charge–discharge cycles up to 105. The comprehensive energy storage performance indicates SmT10 ceramics are among potential candidates for ceramic capacitors working at high temperatures.

Dielectric ceramics with high polarization and low sintering temperature are important for high-performance and low-cost multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Herein, BiFeO3 was added to a lead-free composition 0.48BaTiO3-0.4Bi(Mg0.5Hf0.5)O3-0.12SrTiO3 to lower the sintering temperature and increase the polarization simultaneously. As a result, a low sintering temperature of 950 °C and high comprehensive energy storage properties with a recoverable energy density Wrec of 5.7 J/cm3 and an energy efficiency η of 92% at 450 kV/cm were achieved. Together with the good temperature stability and cycling stability of Wrec and η, the ceramics exhibit great potential in the energy storage MLCCs with low-cost Ag-Pd electrodes with a high Ag content.

Lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics are potential for energy storage applications due to their comprehensive energy storage properties. However, the energy efficiency of many relaxor ceramics is not high enough, leading to high Joule heat during the charge-discharge cycles, thus lowering their energy storage performance. In this work, tantalum (Ta) dopants were introduced into sodium niobate-based relaxor ceramics to improve the resistivity and energy efficiency. The leakage current was reduced by Ta doping, especially at the high electric field. The enhanced resistivity is attributed to the increased bandgap induced by Ta doping. The impedance spectroscopy shows that both the grain and grain boundary resistivities are improved in the high temperature region. As a result, the optimal recoverable energy density and energy efficiency are 6.5 J/cm

High-performance dielectrics are widely used in high-power systems, electric vehicles, and aerospace, as key materials for capacitor devices. Such application scenarios under these extreme conditions require ultra-high stability and reliability of the dielectrics. Herein, a novel pyrochlore component with high-entropy design of Bi1.5Zn0.75Mg0.25Nb0.75Ta0.75O7 (BZMNT) bulk endows an excellent energy storage performance of Wrec ≈ 2.72 J/cm3 together with an ultra-high energy efficiency of 91% at a significant enhanced electric field Eb of 650 kV/cm. Meanwhile, the temperature coefficient (TCC) of BZMNT (∼ −220 ppm/°C) is also found to be greatly improved compared with that of the pure Bi1.5ZnNb1.5O7 (BZN) (∼ −300 ppm/°C), demonstrating its potential application in temperature-reliable conditions. The high-entropy design results in lattice distortion that contributes to the polarization, while the retardation effect results in a reduction of grain size to submicron scale which enhances the Eb. The high-entropy design provides a new strategy for improving the high energy storage performance of ceramic materials.

Carboxylic acids are an abundant and structurally diverse class of commercially available materials, which are commonly used as stable reagents in organic synthesis. The Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction directly using carboxylic acid as a substrate has been rarely reported. Here, we report an efficient coupling reaction of carboxylic acids with arylboronic acids in toluene in the presence of IPrCl-Cl, Pd(OAc)2, PPh3, and K3PO4·7H2O at 90 °C to give the corresponding aryl ketones.

In this work, ultrahigh-performance single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/Se nanowire (NW)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) ternary thermoelectric (TE) nanocomposite films are successfully designed by rational design of CNT/Se/PEDOT:PSS ternary nanocomposites. The addition of CNTs apparently improves the electrical conductivity of composite films, resulting in a relatively huge growth of the power factor. The PEDOT:PSS interface layers uniformly attach on both sides of the Se NWs and CNTs effectively, forming a tightly interleaving and interconnected three-dimensional network. Physical activity recognition (PAR) is a topic worthy of attention. In order to improve the practicality of wearable sensors for recognition, in this study, we propose an approach to create a classifier of PAR based on the collected data. At first, we discuss how features extracted from the accelerometer and gyroscope contribute to distinguish different activities, including walking, walking upstairs, walking downstairs, sitting, standing, laying, and also provide an analytical method employed for this purpose. Then, a supervised machine learning method, random forest algorithm, is adopted to create a classifier to recognize physical activities based on the extracted features. Lastly, the performances of the constructed classifier are evaluated and compared with other methods. The performance evaluation shows the classifier trained by random forest algorithm are better than other algorithms, and its overall recognition rate reaches 93.75%. In addition, our approach also has strong potential for applications in smart textiles.

Thermoelectric materials can realize direct conversion between heat and electricity, showing excellent potential for waste heat recovery. Cu2Se is a typical superionic conductor thermoelectric material having extraordinary ZT values, but its superionic feature causes poor service stability and low mobility. Here, we reported a fast preparation method of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis to realize in situ compositing of BiCuSeO and Cu2Se to optimize the service stability. Additionally, using the interface design by introducing graphene in these composites, the carrier mobility could be obviously enhanced, and the strong phonon scatterings could lead to lower lattice thermal conductivity. Ultimately, the Cu2Se-BiCuSeO-graphene composites presented excellent thermoelectric properties with a ZTmax value of ~2.82 at 1000 K and a ZTave value of ~1.73 from 473 K to 1000 K. This work provides a facile and effective strategy to largely improve the performance of Cu2Se-based thermoelectric materials, which could be further adopted in other thermoelectric systems.

Obesity is associated with increased risk of many types of cancer and can be induced by various high-fat diets (HFD) from different fat sources. It remains unknown whether fatty acid composition in different HFD influences obesity-associated tumor development. Here we report that consumption of either a cocoa butter or fish oil HFD induced similar obesity in mouse models. While obesity induced by the cocoa butter HFD was associated with accelerated mammary tumor growth, consumption of the fish oil HFD uncoupled obesity from increased mammary tumor growth and exhibited a decrease in protumor macrophages. Compared with fatty acid (FA) components in both HFDs, n-3 FA rich in the fish oil HFD induced significant production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and macrophage death. Moreover, A-FABP expression in the protumor macrophages facilitated intracellular transportation of n-3 FA and oxidation of mitochondrial FA. A-FABP deficiency diminished n-3 FA–mediated ROS production and macrophage death in vitro and in vivo. Together, our results demonstrate a novel mechanism by which n-3 FA induce ROS-mediated protumor macrophage death in an A-FABP–dependent manner.Significance:This study provides mechanistic insight into dietary supplementation with fish oil for breast cancer prevention and advances a new concept that not all HFDs leading to obesity are tumorigenic.

The most recent American Dietary Guidelines (2020–2025) recommend shifting dietary fats from solid saturated fats to unsaturated oils. Dietary oils contain different compositions of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). Oleic acid (OA) and linoleic acid (LA) are the most common UFA in dietary oils. How individual UFA in oils regulate immune cell function and cancer risk remains unclear. Here we demonstrated that high-fat diets (HFD) rich either in OA or LA induced a similar degree of murine obesity, but the LA-rich HFD specifically promoted mammary tumor growth. LA impaired antitumor T-cell responses by promoting naïve T-cell apoptosis and inhibiting TNFα production. While exogenous OA and LA were taken up by T cells with similar efficacy, only LA induced significant mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production and lipid peroxidation. Importantly, naïve T cells predominantly expressed epidermal fatty acid binding protein (E-FABP), which is central in facilitating LA mitochondrial transport and cardiolipin incorporation. Genetic depletion of E-FABP rescued LA-impaired T-cell responses and suppressed LA-rich HFD-associated mammary tumor growth. Collectively, these data suggest that dietary oils high in LA promote mammary tumors by inducing E-FABP–mediated T-cell dysfunction.Significance:These findings suggest that modulation of dietary oil composition and inhibition of E-FABP activity may represent novel strategies to enhance T-cell function in the prevention and treatment of obesity-associated cancers.

Solomon rings, upholding the symbol of wisdom with profound historical roots, had been widely used as decoration in ancient architecture and clothes. Yet, it was only recently discovered that such topological structures can be formed by self-organization in biological/chemical molecules, liquid crystals, etc. Here, we report the observation of polar Solomon rings in a ferroelectric nanocrystal, which are composed of two interwoven vortices and mathematically equivalent to a 412 link in topology. By combining piezoresponse force microscopy observations and phase-field simulations, we demonstrate the reversible switching between polar Solomon rings and vertex textures by an electric field. The two types of topological polar textures exhibit distinct absorption of terahertz infrared waves, which can be utilized in infrared displays with a nanoscale resolution. Our study establishes, both experimentally and computationally, the existence and electric manipulation of polar Solomon rings, a new form of topological polar structures, which may provide a simple way for fast, robust, and high-resolution optoelectronic devices.

Partial label learning (PLL) is a typical weakly supervised learning problem in which each instance is associated with a candidate label set, and among which only one is true. However, the assumption that the ground-truth label is always among the candidate label set would be unrealistic, as the reliability of the candidate label sets in real-world applications cannot be guaranteed by annotators. Therefore, a generalized PLL named Unreliable Partial Label Learning (UPLL) is proposed, in which the true label may not be in the candidate label set. Due to the challenges posed by unreliable labeling, previous PLL methods will experience a marked decline in performance when applied to UPLL. To address the issue, we propose a two-stage framework named Unreliable Partial Label Learning with Recursive Separation (UPLLRS). In the first stage, the self-adaptive recursive separation strategy is proposed to separate the training set into a reliable subset and an unreliable subset. In the second stage, a disambiguation strategy is employed to progressively identify the ground-truth labels in the reliable subset. Simultaneously, semi-supervised learning methods are adopted to extract valuable information from the unreliable subset. Our method demonstrates state-of-the-art performance as evidenced by experimental results, particularly in situations of high unreliability.

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, we report that an unconventional high-temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the N\'eel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 n$\Omega$ cm. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AFM spin texture with a non-zero net topological charge. Atomistic spin dynamics simulation shows that such a unique spin texture can be stabilized by the subtle interplay among the collinear AFM exchange coupling, interfacial Dyzaloshinski-Moriya interaction, thermal fluctuation, and bias magnetic field.
