1. Economically reproducible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of different compounds in thin film

Abstract

We report herein an economically cheap and functionally stable surfaceenhanced Raman scattering (SERS) protocol of two photoactive pigments Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and Kiton Red (KR), implemented in thin films of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles (AgNPs and AuNPs). Both commercially available and chemically synthesized nanoparticles were used. The suitability of the nanoparticles toward SERS activity was tested through UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The AgNPs and AuNPs based SERS substrates in the form of films were fabricated onto square-sized aluminum(Al) plates by simple drop deposition of colloidal nanoparticles solution onto their polished surfaces. The prepared nanoparticle films were sufficiently dried and coated further with the probe (R6G and KR) molecules by employing the identical deposition technique. The enhanced Raman signals of R6G and KR in such composite film structures were then recorded through a custom-built dispersive Raman spectrometer with He-Ne laser excitation at 632.8 nm. Our AgNPsfilm-based SERS protocol could yield the magnitude of the Raman signal enhancement up to 104 times for both R6G and KR. Moreover, AuNPs-based film was found to be less efficient toward the Raman enhancement of both compounds. Our SERS substrates can be easily fabricated, and SERS spectra are reproducible and stable, allowing one to consistently get a reproducible result even after 6 months. J. Bangladesh Acad. 2. Highly Sensitive Detection of Lead in Aqueous Solution using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Coupled with Adsorption Technique

Abstract

Two types of adsorbents, zinc oxide (ZnO) and zeolite, have been used to probe the lowest detectable limit of lead (Pb) dissolved in water. To achieve the goal, water-soluble Pb complexes were produced by dissolving in water or titrating with HNO3 acid with different concentrations of four different compounds of Pb. The dissolved Pb complexes were then allowed to be adsorbed onto ZnO or zeolite. LIBS spectra of the Pb–ZnO and Pb–zeolite composites were recorded in the 331.5–370.5, and 355–394 nm spectral windows, respectively. Calibration curves were drawn using the normalized line intensities of Pb I at wavelengths of 357.269, 363.958, and 368.319 nm versus the concentration of the added Pb. For all the adsorbates (the Pb compounds) used, the adsorption curves as a function of the adsorbate concentration in water followed the Langmuir type isotherms. The lowest limit of detection (LoD) and the slope of the linear part of the adsorption isotherm varied for various adsorbents, adsorbates, and different Pb I emission lines used. ZnO was found to be a better adsorbent than zeolite in terms of LoD and the slope of the linear part of the isotherm and hence the sensitivity of the detection. The LoD for Pb in an aqueous solution in the current LIBS experiment coupled with the adsorption technique was found to be 0.5 ppm.

3. Identification of Multiple Rare Earths and Other Associated Elements in Zircon by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), which is a powerful technique for the detection of minor and trace elements in a sample, has been used to analyze the enriched zircon mineral collected from the beach sands of southern Bangladesh. In addition to zirconium, a large number of rare earth elements viz. cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium, ytterbium, gadolinium, dysprosium, erbium, samarium, europium, holmium and yttrium and other associated elements like hafnium, niobium, tantalum, magnesium, calcium, sodium, titanium and iron along with non-metals like phosphorus and silicon were detected in the enriched zircon samples by the LIBS technique. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that multiple rare earth elements have been identified in natural zircon by LIBS. 4. A Rapid Method of Identification of Garnet in Beach Sands Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract

In this work, Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used for investigating the presence of heavy mineral garnet (X3Y2(SiO4)3, where the X represent either of Ca2+ , Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and the Y site contain either of Fe3+, Cr2+, Al3+ ) in beach sand samples collected from Sitakunda, Bangladesh. To achieve the goal, in the first attempt, a comprehensive spectral profiling of the laboratory grade garnet was done and the identified emission lines were employed as the reference lines for discovering the presence of the elements of garnet in the LIBS spectra of different sand samples and an arbitrary soil sample. The average intensity ratio for these reference lines of Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Ca, estimated in different sand samples and the isolated garnet sample, is found to be about 60 % (against the average intensity ratio of about 20 % estimated for general soil sample and garnet), substantiating the presence of garnet in sand with significant concentration. Therefore, LIBS can be used as a useful alternative experimental tool for predicting the presence of minerals in the sand samples and for the exploration of new geological site in Bangladesh. Abstract

Azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon ( γ d i r ) and neutral-pion ( π 0 ) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p + p collisions at s N N = 200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p + p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per γ d i r trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle ( p T trig ), whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons ( p T assoc ). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for γ d i r and π 0 triggers as a function of z T ( ≡ p T assoc / p T trig ). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. Our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy.

Abstract

The STAR Collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au + Au data with respect to the d + Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the ridge region, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. The consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization. Abstract

© 2018 IEEE. We have pioneered a platform technology able to harness the properties of graphene directly from silicon carbide on silicon substrates for integrated on-chip or in-package applications, ranging from sensing and nanophotonics to integrated energy storage. The graphene synthesis is transfer-free and site-selective, leading to straightforward wafer-level fabrication and yielding sufficient adhesion for subsequent processing. This approach among others can pave the way towards miniaturized energy sources in SiP systems for smart nodes of the Internet of Everything.

Abstract

Dihadron angular correlations in d + Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity (Delta eta) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth Delta phi similar to 0). This correlated yield as a function of Delta eta appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side (Delta phi similar to pi) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the Delta phi correlation, V-n = , have a strong Delta eta dependence. In addition, it is found that V-1 is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while V-2 is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward (d-going) and backward (Au-going) directions. Abstract

A data-driven method was applied to Au+Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV made with the STAR detector at RHIC to isolate pseudorapidity distance Delta eta-dependent and Delta eta-independent correlations by using two- and four-particle azimuthal cumulant measurements. We identified a Delta eta-independent component of the correlation, which is dominated by anisotropic flow and flow fluctuations. It was also found to be independent of. within the measured range of pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar 0.7. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

We report measurements of Υ meson production in p + p, d + Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the Υ yield to the measured cross section in p + p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d + Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p + p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon (1S + 2S + 3S) in the rapidity range |y| < 1 in d + Au collisions of RdAu = 0.79 ± 0.24(stat.) ± 0.03(syst.) ± 0.10(p + p syst.). A comparison with models including shadowing and initial state parton energy loss indicates the presence of additional cold-nuclear matter suppression. Similarly, in the top 10% most-central Au + Au collisions, we measure a nuclear modification factor of R AA = 0.49 ±0.1(stat.) ±0.02(syst.) ±0.06(p + p syst.), which is a larger suppression factor than that seen in cold nuclear matter. Our results are consistent with complete suppression of excited-state Upsilon mesons in Au + Au collisions. Themore » additional suppression in Au + Au is consistent with the level expected in model calculations that include the presence of a hot, deconfined Quark–Gluon Plasma. Abstract

Dihadron correlations are analyzed in sNN=200 GeV d+Au collisions classified by forward charged particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the Au-beam direction. It is found that the jetlike correlated yield increases with the event multiplicity. After taking into account this dependence, the non-jet contribution on the away side is minimal, leaving little room for a back-to-back ridge in these collisions.

Abstract

We report on a polarization measurement of inclusive J/psi mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The J/psi polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the J/psi production mechanism since they predict different p(T) dependences of the J/psi polarization. In this analysis, J/psi is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter lambda(theta) measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high p(T), indicating more longitudinal J/psi polarization as p(T) increases. Abstract

We report measurements of Upsilon meson production in p + p, d + Au, and Au + Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the Upsilon yield to the measured cross section in p + p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d + Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au + Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p + p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon (1S + 2S + 3S) in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar < 1 in d + Au collisions of R-dAu = 0.79 +/- 0.24(stat.) +/- 0.03(syst.) +/- 0.10(p + p syst.). A comparison with models including shadowing and initial state parton energy loss indicates the presence of additional cold-nuclear matter suppression. Similarly, in the top 10% most-central Au + Au collisions, we measure a nuclear modification factor of R-AA = 0.49 +/- 0.1(stat.) +/- 0.02(syst.) +/- 0.06(p + p syst.), which is a larger suppression factor than that seen in cold nuclear matter. Our results are consistent with complete suppression of excited-state Upsilon mesons in Au + Au collisions. The additional suppression in Au + Au is consistent with the level expected in model calculations that include the presence of a hot, deconfined Quark-Gluon Plasma. However, understanding the suppression seen in d + Au is still needed before any definitive statements about the nature of the suppression in Au + Au can be made. (C) 2014 The Authors. Abstract

LIBS technique coupled with adsorption has been applied for the efficient detection of arsenic in liquid. Several adsorbents like tea leaves, bamboo slice, charcoal and zinc oxide have been used to enable sensitive detection of arsenic presence in water using LIBS. Among these, zinc oxide and charcoal show the better results. The detection limits for arsenic in water were 1 ppm and 8 ppm, respectively, when ZnO and charcoal were used as adsorbents of arsenic. To date, the determination of 1 ppm of As in water is the lowest concentration of detected arsenic in water by the LIBS technique. The detection limit of As was lowered to even less than 100 ppb by a combination of LIBS technique, adsorption by ZnO and concentration enhancement technique. Using the combination of these three techniques the ultimate concentration of arsenic was found to be 0.083 ppm (83 ppb) for arsenic polluted water collected from a tube-well of Farajikandi union (longitude 90.64°, latitude 23.338° north) of Matlab Upozila of Chandpur district in Bangladesh. This result compares fairly well with the finding of arsenic concentration of 0.078 ppm in the sample by the AAS technique at the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) lab. Such a low detection limit (1 ppm) of trace elements in liquid matrix has significantly enhanced the scope of LIBS as an analytical tool.

Abstract

Lifetimes of the excited 2P2 (3P) 3p 4S3/2 level of a nitrogen atom corresponding to transitions to different lower states have been estimated by measuring the line intensity of a transition as a function of the delay time between the Q-switching of the laser and the gating of the window of the ICCD. This novel time resolved laser-induced breakdown spectroscopic technique is explained in the paper. The lifetimes of the upper level 2P2 (3P) 3p 4S3/2 corresponding to the three transitions to 2P2 (3P) 3s 4P1/2 (742.346 nm), 2P2 (3P) 3s 4P3/2 (744.27 nm) and 2P2 (3P) 3s 4P5/2 (746.851 nm) were measured by this technique. The corresponding average lifetimes (τ) of these transitions were 199 ns, 105 ns and 68 ns. These values compare pretty well with the calculated lifetimes of 203.8 ns, 96.7 ns and 59.2 ns for the above three transitions as reported by Hibbert et al. The plasma temperature (atomic excitation temperature) decay time was found to be 1133 ns. This novel technique of estimating the lifetime of an excited state of an atom/ion is yet another very useful application of LIBS as a versatile analytical tool.

Abstract

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to determine the elemental content and to detect probable eco-toxic elements in agricultural soil in Gazipur, Bangladesh (latitude: 24.0958° N, longitude: 90.4125° E). Soil samples were collected from three experimental plots of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur and from a fallow land in the same area where no crop has been produced for a long time. This land is believed to be contaminated by the affluent discharged from nearby industries. Rice and husk samples were also collected from one of the experimental plots. Several elements such as Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe, Ca, Al, Si, Sn, Na, K, Ti, Mn, Li, Mo, Co were identified in the soil samples of the three experimental plots. Rice and husk samples also have the same elements including Sr, P, C and Mg. The LIBS study of the soil of the fallow land confirms the presence of the toxic element Cd along with all the elements found in the soil samples of the experimental plots. The sample from the fallow land from Gazipur was also analyzed for Cd by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The presence of 6.5 ppm of Cd in this fallow land above the tolerance limit (3 ppm) is supposedly the main reason for barrenness of the fallow land in the present case.

Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopic (LIBS) technique was used to study the elemental profile of coral skeletons. Apart from calcium and carbon, which are the main elemental constituents of coral skeleton, elements like Sr, Na, Mg, Li, Si, Cu, Ti, K, Mn, Zn, Ba, Mo, Br and Fe were detected in the coral skeletons from the Inani Beach and the Saint Martin’s island of Bangladesh and the coral from the Philippines. In addition to the qualitative analysis, the quantitative analysis of the main elemental constituent, calcium (Ca), was done. The result shows the presence of (36.15±1.43)% by weight of Ca in the coral skeleton collected from the Inani Beach, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. It was determined by using six calibration curves, drawn for six emission lines of Ca I (428.301 nm, 428.936 nm, 431.865 nm, 443.544 nm, 443.569 nm, and 445.589 nm), by standard analyte additive method. Also from AAS measurement the percentage content of Ca in the same sample of coral skeleton obtained was 39.87% by weight which compares fairly well with the result obtained by the analyte additive method.

18. Poor tolerability of thalidomide in end-stage oesophageal cancer

Abstract

Oesophageal cancer cachexia is a significant clinical problem, resulting in excessive morbidity and mortality. In a pilot study, 10 patients with cachexia due to advanced cancer of the oesophagus gained weight, including lean tissue, after 14-day treatment with thalidomide. Here, we present randomised placebo controlled trial data over a 6-week period to test the hypothesis that thalidomide is superior to placebo in terms of weight gain in patients with cachexia caused by oesophageal cancer. Thalidomide, 200 mg daily, or an identical placebo was given to patients with advanced oesophageal cancer. Total body weight and lean body mass were assessed in addition to drug tolerability and performance indices. Thirty-four patients were recruited. Of these, six given thalidomide and 16 given placebo completed the protocol; all withdrawals were due to adverse drug reactions or complications of disease. Thalidomide showed no benefit over placebo in participants who completed the protocol. These data suggest that thalidomide is poorly tolerated in patients with advanced cancer of the oesophagus and may not ameliorate the progression of cachexia. In the absence of hard supportive evidence, off-licence treatment with thalidomide should be used with great caution as an adjunct to nutritional support in patients with advanced cancer.

Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an emerging and promising tool for rapid and efficient elemental analysis. We used the LIBS technique to analyze the raw monazite sands collected from the beaches in southern Bangladesh. We have detected a number of rare earths (lanthanides) such as cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium, yttrium, ytterbium, gadolinium, dysprosium and erbium, in addition to other metallic elements such as zirconium, chromium, titanium, magnesium, manganese, niobium and aluminum. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time multiple rare earths have been identified in a natural mineral by LIBS.

Abstract

Objectives. The HPV16/18 code for an oncoprotein-E6, which binds to p53 tumor suppressor protein and degrades the protein via ubiquitination. A common polymorphism of p53 in exon 4 codon 72, resulting in either proline (Pro) or arginine (Arg), affects HPV16/18 E6-mediated degradation of p53 protein in vivo. Hence, in the current study we investigated the prevalence of HPV16/18 in cervical lesions and the distribution of p53 genotypes in cervical cancers and normal healthy women. Methods. DNA from 337 Indian women with invasive cervical cancers, 164 women with clinically normal cervix, 64 women with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), and 5 women with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) was examined for the presence of HPV16/18 using consensus primers in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the specific HPV type was identified by Southern hybridization of the PCR product using HPV16/18 type-specific nucleotide sequences as probes. Further, 134 women with cervical cancers and 131 healthy women were used to determine the frequency of p53 genotypes, Pro/Pro, Arg/Arg, and Pro/Arg, using peripheral blood cell DNA to indicate the constitutional genotypes and allele-specific primers, in a PCR-based assay. Results. We observed a prevalence of HPV16/18 in 77% (258/337) of cervical cancer patients, 38% (24/64) of LSILs, 4 of 5 HSILs, and 15.2% (25/164) of normal healthy women. The frequency of distribution of the three genotypes of p53 codon 72 in a subgroup of the HPV16/18-positive cervical cancer patients was Pro/Pro 0.18 and Arg/Arg 0.26, with the heterozygous Pro/Arg 0.56, differing significantly from the genotype frequency in the normal healthy women (χ 2 = 6.928, df = 2, P Conclusions. A high prevalence of HPV16/18 was observed in the cervical cancers. The prevalence in LSILs confirms HPV16/18 infection as an early event and further indicates a role in progression of lesions. The p53 genotype distribution indicated that women homozygous for Arg genotype were at a 2.4-fold higher risk for developing HPV16/18-associated cervical carcinomas, compared to those showing heterozygous Pro/Arg genotype (odds ratio 2.4, 95% confidence interval 1.89 to 3.04).

Abstract

This report presents results from a 6-month study over the period 16 November 1986 to 15 May 1987 which was designed to investigate the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in Dammam and Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia. A total of 209 stool specimens from children and 112 from adults with diarrhoea were examined. Only two (1%) of the children, both aged 2 years, were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. Giardia lamblia was found in 13 (4%) cases and was found to be the most common protozoan parasite, whereas Salmonella spp. was seen in 19 (6%) cases. Stool specimens were examined for rotavirus from children under 2 years of age; 31 (41%) of the specimens were positive.
