Abstract: The $\gamma$-ray spectrum of the low-frequency-peaked BL Lac (LBL) object AP Librae is studied, following the discovery of very-high-energy (VHE; $E>100\,{\rm GeV}$) $\gamma$-ray emission up to the TeV range by the H.E.S.S. experiment. This makes AP Librae one of the few VHE emitters of the LBL type. The measured spectrum yields a flux of $(8.8 \pm 1.5_{\rm stat} \pm 1.8_{\rm sys}) \times 10^{-12}\ {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$ above 130 GeV and a spectral index of $\Gamma = 2.65\pm0.19_{\rm stat}\pm0.20_{\rm sys}$. This study also makes use of \textit{Fermi}-LAT, observations in the high energy (HE, E$>$100 MeV) range, providing the longest continuous light curve (5 years) ever published on this source. The source underwent a flaring event between MJD 56306-56376 in the HE range, with a flux increase of a factor 3.5 in the 14-day bin light curve and no significant variation in spectral shape with respect to the low-flux state. While the H.E.S.S., and (low state) \textit{Fermi}-LAT fluxes are in good agreement where they overlap, a spectral curvature between the steep VHE spectrum and the \textit{Fermi}-LAT, spectrum is observed. The maximum of the $\gamma$-ray emission in the spectral energy distribution is located below the GeV energy range.

Abstract: The astrophysical journal 802(1), 65 - (2015). doi:10.1088/0004-637X/802/1/65, Very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) $\gamma-ray$ flaring activity of the high-frequency peaked BL Lac object PG 1553+113 has been detected by the H.E.S.S. telescopes. The flux of the source increased by a factor of 3 during the nights of 2012 April 26 and 27 with respect to the archival measurements with a hint of intra-night variability. No counterpart of this event has been detected in the Fermi-Large Area Telescope data. This pattern is consistent with VHE $\gamma-ray$ flaring being caused by the injection of ultrarelativistic particles, emitting $\gamma-rays$ at the highest energies. The dataset offers a unique opportunity to constrain the redshift of this source at z = 0.49 $\pm$ 0.04 using a novel method based on Bayesian statistics. The indication of intra-night variability is used to introduce a novel method to probe for a possible Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), and to set limits on the energy scale at which Quantum Gravity (QG) effects causing LIV may arise. For the subluminal case, the derived limits are $E_{QG,1}$ > 4.10 × $10^{17}$ GeV and $E_{QG,2}$ > 2.10 × $10^{10}$ GeV for linear and quadratic LIV effects, respectively., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. Abstract: The long gamma-ray burst (GRB) 100621A, at the time the brightest X-ray transient ever detected by Swift-XRT in the $0.3\textrm{--}10$ keV range, has been observed with the H.E.S.S. imaging air Cherenkov telescope array, sensitive to gamma radiation in the very-high-energy (VHE, $>100$ GeV) regime. Abstract: In this paper we report on the analysis of all the available optical and very high-energy $��$-ray ($>$200 GeV) data for the BL Lac object PKS 2155$-$304, collected simultaneously with the ATOM and H.E.S.S. telescopes from 2007 until 2009. This study also includes X-ray (RXTE, Swift) and high-energy $��$-ray (Fermi-LAT) data. During the period analysed, the source was transitioning from its flaring to quiescent optical states,and was characterized by only moderate flux changes at different wavelengths on the timescales of days and months. A flattening of the optical continuum with an increasing optical flux can be noted in the collected dataset, but only occasionally and only at higher flux levels. We did not find any universal relation between the very high-energy $��$-ray and optical flux changes on the timescales from days and weeks up to several years. On the other hand, we noted that at higher flux levels the source can follow two distinct tracks in the optical flux-colour diagrams, which seem to be related to distinct $��$-ray states of the blazar. The obtained results therefore indicate a complex scaling between the optical and $��$-ray emission of PKS 2155$-$304, with different correlation patterns holding at different epochs, and a $��$-ray flux depending on the combination of an optical flux and colour rather than a flux alone., 10 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Context: Very-high-energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) ��-ray emission from blazars inevitably gives rise to electron-positron pair production through the interaction of these ��-rays with the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). Depending on the magnetic fields in the proximity of the source, the cascade initiated from pair production can result in either an isotropic halo around an initially beamed source or a magnetically broadened cascade flux. Aims: Both extended pair halo (PH) and magnetically broadened cascade (MBC) emission from regions surrounding the blazars 1ES 1101-232, 1ES 0229+200 and PKS 2155-304 were searched for, using VHE ��-ray data taken with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), and high energy (HE; 100 MeV 10$^{-12}$G, this limits the production of pair halos developing from electromagnetic cascades. For weaker magnetic fields, in which electromagnetic cascades would result in magnetically broadened cascades, EGMF strengths in the range (0.3 - 3)$\times 10^{-15}$G were excluded for PKS 2155-304 at the 99% confidence level, under the assumption of a 1 Mpc coherence length., 11 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: The quasar PKS 1510-089 (z=0.361) was observed with the H.E.S.S. array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes during high states in the optical and GeV bands, to search for very high energy (VHE, defined as E >= 0.1 TeV) emission. VHE \gamma-rays were detected with a statistical significance of 9.2 standard deviations in 15.8 hours of H.E.S.S. data taken during March and April 2009. A VHE integral flux of I(0.15 TeV < E < 1.0 TeV) = (1.0 +- 0.2 (stat) +- 0.2 (sys) x 10^{-11} cm^{-2}s^{-1} is measured. The best-fit power law to the VHE data has a photon index of \Gamma=5.4 +- 0.7 (stat) +- 0.3 (sys). The GeV and optical light curves show pronounced variability during the period of H.E.S.S. observations. However, there is insufficient evidence to claim statistically significant variability in the VHE data. Because of its relatively high redshift, the VHE flux from PKS 1510-089 should suffer considerable attenuation in the intergalactic space due to the extragalactic background light (EBL). Hence, the measured \gamma-ray spectrum is used to derive upper limits on the opacity due to EBL, which are found to be comparable with the previously derived limits from relatively-nearby BL Lac objects. Unlike typical VHE-detected blazars where the broadband spectrum is dominated by non-thermal radiation at all wavelengths, the quasar PKS 1510-089 has a bright thermal component in the optical to UV frequency band. Among all VHE detected blazars, PKS 1510-089 has the most luminous broad line region (BLR). Abstract: Globular clusters (GCs) are established emitters of high-energy (HE, 100 MeV100 GeV) \gamma-ray regime, judging from the recent detection of a signal from the direction of Terzan 5 with the H.E.S.S. telescope array. We searched for point-like and extended VHE \gamma-ray emission from 15 GCs serendipitously covered by H.E.S.S observations and also performed a stacking analysis combining the data from all GCs to investigate the hypothesis of a population of faint emitters. Assuming IC emission as the origin of the VHE \gamma-ray signal from the direction of Terzan 5, we calculated the expected \gamma-ray flux from each of the 15 GCs, based on their number of millisecond pulsars, their optical brightness and the energy density of background photon fields. We did not detect significant VHE \gamma-ray emission from any of the 15 GCs in either of the two analyses. Given the uncertainties related to the parameter determinations, the obtained flux upper limits allow to rule out the simple IC/msPSR scaling model for NGC 6388 and NGC 7078. The upper limits derived from the stacking analyses are factors between 2 and 50 below the flux predicted by the simple leptonic scaling model, depending on the assumed source extent and the dominant target photon fields. Therefore, Terzan 5 still remains exceptional among all GCs, as the VHE \gamma-ray emission either arises from extra-ordinarily efficient leptonic processes, or from a recent catastrophic event, or is even unrelated to the GC itself., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: The active galactic nucleus PKS 0301-243 (z=0.266) is a high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object that is detected at high energies (HE, 100 MeV < E < 100 GeV) by Fermi/LAT. This paper reports on the discovery of PKS 0301-243 at very high energies (E>100 GeV) by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) from observations between September 2009 and December 2011 for a total live time of 34.9 hours. Gamma rays above 200 GeV are detected at a significance of 9.4{\sigma}. A hint of variability at the 2.5{\sigma} level is found. An integral flux I(E > 200 GeV) = (3.3 +/- 1.1_stat +/- 0.7_syst)e-12 ph cm^-2s^-1 and a photon index {\Gamma} = 4.6 +/- 0.7_stat +/- 0.2_syst are measured. Multi-wavelength light curves in HE, X-ray and optical bands show strong variability, and a minimal variability timescale of eight days is estimated from the optical light curve. A single-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton scenario satisfactorily reproduces the multi-wavelength data. In this model, the emitting region is out of equipartition and the jet is particle dominated. Because of its high redshift compared to other sources observed at TeV energies, the very high energy emission from PKS 0301-243 is attenuated by the extragalactic background light (EBL) and the measured spectrum is used to derive an upper limit on the opacity of the EBL., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, to appear in A&A

Abstract: Globular clusters (GCs) are established emitters of high-energy (HE, 100 MeV100 GeV) ��-ray regime, judging from the recent detection of a signal from the direction of Terzan 5 with the H.E.S.S. telescope array. We searched for point-like and extended VHE ��-ray emission from 15 GCs serendipitously covered by H.E.S.S observations and also performed a stacking analysis combining the data from all GCs to investigate the hypothesis of a population of faint emitters. Assuming IC emission as the origin of the VHE ��-ray signal from the direction of Terzan 5, we calculated the expected ��-ray flux from each of the 15 GCs, based on their number of millisecond pulsars, their optical brightness and the energy density of background photon fields. We did not detect significant VHE ��-ray emission from any of the 15 GCs in either of the two analyses. Given the uncertainties related to the parameter determinations, the obtained flux upper limits allow to rule out the simple IC/msPSR scaling model for NGC 6388 and NGC 7078. The upper limits derived from the stacking analyses are factors between 2 and 50 below the flux predicted by the simple leptonic scaling model, depending on the assumed source extent and the dominant target photon fields. Therefore, Terzan 5 still remains exceptional among all GCs, as the VHE ��-ray emission either arises from extra-ordinarily efficient leptonic processes, or from a recent catastrophic event, or is even unrelated to the GC itself., 8 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: 1ES 0414+009 (z = 0.287) is a distant high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object, and has long been considered a likely emitter of very-high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-rays due to its high X-ray and radio flux. Observations in the VHE gamma-ray band and across the electromagnetic spectrum can provide insights into the origin of highly energetic particles present in the source and the radiation processes at work. Because of the distance of the source, the gamma-ray spectrum might provide further limits on the level of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). We report observations made between October 2005 and December 2009 with H.E.S.S., an array of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Observations at high energies (HE, 100 MeV - 100 GeV) with the Fermi-LAT instrument in the first 20 months of its operation are also reported. To complete the multi-wavelength picture, archival UV and X-ray observations with the Swift satellite and optical observations with the ATOM telescope are also used. Based on the observations with H.E.S.S., 1ES 0414+009 is detected for the first time in the VHE band. An excess of 224 events is measured, corresponding to a significance of 7.8 sigma. The photon spectrum of the source is well described by a power law, with photon index of 3.45 \pm 0.25stat \pm 0.20syst. The integral flux above 200 GeV is (1.88 \pm 0.20stat \pm 0.38syst) \times10-12 cm-2 s-1. Observations with the Fermi-LAT in the first 20 months of operation show a flux between 200 MeV and 100 GeV of (2.3 \pm 0.2stat) \times 10-9 erg cm-2 s-1, and a spectrum well described by a power-law function with a photon index 1.85 \pm 0.18. Swift/XRT observations show an X-ray flux between 2 and 10 keV of (0.8 - 1) \times 10-11 erg cm-2 s-1, and a steep spectrum (2.2 - 2.3). Abstract: Very-high-energy (VHE; E >100 GeV) and high-energy (HE; 100 MeV < E < 100 GeV) data from ��-ray observations performed with the H.E.S.S. telescope array and the Fermi-LAT instrument, respectively, are analysed in order to investigate the non-thermal processes in the starburst galaxy NGC 253. The VHE ��-ray data can be described by a power law in energy with differential photon index ��=2.14 \pm 0.18_stat \pm 0.30_sys and differential flux normalisation at 1 TeV of F_0 = (9.6 \pm 1.5_stat (+5.7,-2.9)_sys) x 10^{-14} TeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. A power-law fit to the differential HE ��-ray spectrum reveals a photon index of ��=2.24 \pm 0.14_stat \pm 0.03_sys and an integral flux between 200 MeV and 200 GeV of F(0.2-200 GeV) = (4.9 \pm 1.0_stat \pm 0.3_sys) x 10^{-9} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. No evidence for a spectral break or turnover is found over the dynamic range of both the LAT instrument and the H.E.S.S. experiment: a combined fit of a power law to the HE and VHE ��-ray data results in a differential photon index ��=2.34 \pm 0.03 with a p-value of 30%. The ��-ray observations indicate that at least about 20% of the energy of the cosmic rays capable of producing hadronic interactions is channeled into pion production. The smooth alignment between the spectra in the HE and VHE ��-ray domain suggests that the same transport processes dominate in the entire energy range. Advection is most likely responsible for charged particle removal from the starburst nucleus from GeV to multiple TeV energies. In a hadronic scenario for the ��-ray production, the single overall power-law spectrum observed would therefore correspond to the mean energy spectrum produced by the ensemble of cosmic-ray sources in the starburst region., paper accepted for publication in ApJ, 12 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables

Abstract: 1RXS J101015.9-311909 is a galaxy located at a redshift of z=0.14 hosting an active nucleus belonging to the class of bright BL Lac objects. Observations at high (HE, E > 100 MeV) and very high (VHE, E > 100 GeV) energies provide insights into the origin of very energetic particles present in such sources and the radiation processes at work. We report on results from VHE observations performed between 2006-10 with H.E.S.S. H.E.S.S. data have been analysed with enhanced analysis methods, making the detection of faint sources more significant. VHE emission at a position coincident with 1RXS J101015.9-311909 is detected with H.E.S.S. for the first time. In a total good-quality livetime of about 49 h, we measure 263 excess counts, corresponding to a significance of 7.1��. The photon spectrum above 0.2 TeV can be described by a power-law with a photon index of �� = 3.08\pm0.42_{stat}\pm0.20_{sys}. The integral flux above 0.2 TeV is about 0.8% of the flux of the Crab nebula and shows no significant variability over the time reported. In addition, public Fermi/LAT data are analysed to search for high energy emission from the source. The Fermi/LAT HE emission is significant at 8.3�� in the chosen 25-month dataset. UV and X-ray contemporaneous observations with the Swift satellite in May 2007 are also reported, together with optical observations performed with the ATOM telescope located at the H.E.S.S. site. Swift observations reveal an absorbed X-ray flux of F_{0.3-7 keV} = 1.04^{+0.04}_{-0.05} \times 10^{-11} erg.cm^{-2}.s^{-1} in the 0.3-7 keV range. Finally, all the available data are used to study the source's multi-wavelength properties. The SED can be reproduced using a simple one-zone SSC model with emission from a region with a Doppler factor of 30 and a magnetic field between 0.025 and 0.16 G. Abstract: Results obtained in very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) ��-ray observations performed with the H.E.S.S. telescope array are used to investigate particle acceleration processes in the vicinity of the young massive stellar cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd 1). Imaging of Cherenkov light from ��-ray induced particle cascades in the Earth's atmosphere is used to search for VHE �� rays from the region around Wd 1. Possible catalogued counterparts are searched for and discussed in terms of morphology and energetics of the H.E.S.S. source. The detection of the degree-scale extended VHE ��-ray source HESS J1646-458 is reported based on 45 hours of H.E.S.S. observations performed between 2004 and 2008. The VHE ��-ray source is centred on the nominal position of Wd 1 and detected with a total statistical significance of ~20��. The emission region clearly extends beyond the H.E.S.S. point-spread function (PSF). The differential energy spectrum follows a power law in energy with an index of ��=2.19 \pm 0.08_{stat} \pm 0.20_{sys} and a flux normalisation at 1 TeV of ��_0 = (9.0 \pm 1.4_{stat} \pm 1.8_{sys}) x 10^{-12} TeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The integral flux above 0.2 TeV amounts to (5.2 \pm 0.9) x 10^{-11} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. Four objects coincident with HESS J1646-458 are discussed in the search of a counterpart, namely the magnetar CXOU J164710.2-455216, the X-ray binary 4U 1642-45, the pulsar PSR J1648-4611 and the massive stellar cluster Wd 1. In a single-source scenario, Wd 1 is favoured as site of VHE particle acceleration. Here, a hadronic parent population would be accelerated within the stellar cluster. Abstract: Predicted by hierarchical structure formation, Milky Way-type galaxies are anticipated to host numerous dark matter subhalos with masses between 10^{10} and a cut-off of 10^{-6} solar masses, or even less. In self-annihilating dark matter scenarios, these objects could be visible in the gamma-ray band as faint and non-variable sources without astrophysical counterpart. In accordance with realistic subhalo models and current observational constraints on self-annihilating dark matter, we predict that about one massive Galactic subhalo may have already been detected in the 11-months catalog of Fermi-LAT data (1FGL). Selection cuts applied to the 1FGL reveal twelve possible candidates, and in-depth studies of the most promising object, 1FGL J0030.7+0724, are presented. In a dedicated X-ray follow-up observation with the Swift XRT, seven point-like X-ray sources have been discovered. Within the positional uncertainty derived from the 24-months Fermi-LAT data, we consider the unidentified radio source NVSS J003119+072456, coinciding with one of the discovered Swift sources, as the most promising counterpart candidate for 1FGL J0030.7+0724. The broad-band spectral energy distribution is consistent with a high-energy-peaked blazar. However, flux and extent of the Fermi source may also be compatible with a dark matter subhalo. A discrimination between the two scenarios requires further multi-wavelength observations. Abstract: Very high-energy gamma-rays (VHE; E>100 GeV) have been detected from the direction of the Galactic Centre up to energies E>10 TeV. Up to now, the origin of this emission is unknown due to the limited positional accuracy of the observing instruments. One of the counterpart candidates is the super-massive black hole (SMBH) Sgr A*. If the VHE emission is produced within ~10^{15} cm ~1000 r_G (r_G=G M/c^2 is the Schwarzschild radius) of the SMBH, a decrease of the VHE photon flux in the energy range 100--300 GeV is expected whenever an early type or giant star approaches the line of sight within ~ milli-arcseconds (mas). The dimming of the flux is due to absorption by pair-production of the VHE photons in the soft photon field of the star, an effect we refer to as pair-production eclipse (PPE). Based upon the currently known orbits of stars in the inner arcsecond of the Galaxy we find that PPEs lead to a systematic dimming in the 100--300 GeV band at the level of a few per cent and lasts for several weeks. Since the PPE affects only a narrow energy band and is well correlated with the passage of the star, it can be clearly discriminated against other systematic or even source-intrinsic effects. While the effect is too small to be observable with the current generation of VHE detectors, upcoming high count-rate experiments like the Cherenkov telescope array (CTA) will be sufficiently sensitive. Measuring the temporal signature of the PPE bears the potential to locate the position and size of the VHE emitting region within the inner 1000 r_G or in the case of a non-detection exclude the immediate environment of the SMBH as the site of gamma-ray production altogether., 7 pages, published in MNRAS 402, pg. 1342-1348

Abstract: An updated model for the synchrotron and inverse Compton emission from a population of high energy electrons of the Crab Nebula is used to reproduce the measured spectral energy distribution from radio to high energy gamma-rays. By comparing the predicted inverse Compton component with recent Fermi measurements of the nebula's emission, it is possible to determine the average magnetic field in the nebula and to derive the underlying electron energy distribution. The model calculation can then be used to cross calibrate the Fermi observations with ground based air shower measurements. Abstract: Multiwavelength (MWL) observations of the blazar PKS 2155-304 during two weeks in July and August 2006, the period when two exceptional flares at very high energies (VHE, E>= 100 GeV) occurred, provide a detailed picture of the evolution of its emission. The complete data set from this campaign is presented, including observations in VHE gamma-rays (H.E.S.S.), X-rays (RXTE, CHANDRA, SWIFT XRT), optical (SWIFT UVOT, Bronberg, Watcher, ROTSE), and in the radio band (NRT, HartRAO, ATCA). Optical and radio light curves from 2004 to 2008 are compared to the available VHE data from this period, to put the 2006 campaign into the context of the long-term evolution of the source. The X-ray and VHE gamma-ray emission are correlated during the observed high state of the source, but show no direct connection with longer wavelengths. The long-term flux evolution in the optical and radio bands is found to be correlated and shows that the source reaches a high state at long wavelengths after the occurrence of the VHE flares. Spectral hardening is seen in the SWIFT XRT data. The nightly averaged high-energy spectra of the non-flaring nights can be reproduced by a stationary one-zone SSC model, with only small variations in the parameters. The spectral and flux evolution in the high-energy band during the night of the second VHE flare is modelled with multi-zone SSC models, which can provide relatively simple interpretations for the hour time-scale evolution of the high-energy emission, even for such a complex data set. For the first time in this type of source, a clear indication is found for a relation between high activity at high energies and a long-term increase in the low frequency fluxes., 23 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: A search for a very-high-energy (VHE; >= 100 GeV) gamma-ray signal from self-annihilating particle Dark Matter (DM) is performed towards a region of projected distance r ~ 45-150 pc from the Galactic Center. The background-subtracted gamma-ray spectrum measured with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) gamma-ray instrument in the energy range between 300 GeV and 30 TeV shows no hint of a residual gamma-ray flux. Assuming conventional Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) and Einasto density profiles, limits are derived on the velocity-weighted annihilation cross section < \sigma v> as a function of the DM particle mass. These are among the best reported so far for this energy range. In particular, for the DM particle mass of ~1 TeV, values for above 3 * 10^(-25) cm^3 s^(-1) are excluded for the Einasto density profile. The limits derived here differ much less for the chosen density profile parametrizations, as opposed to limits from gamma-ray observations of dwarf galaxies or the very center of the Milky Way, where the discrepancy is significantly larger., Comment: 6 Pages, accepted for publication in Phys.
