It is hard to control roadways effectively with a heightened burst risk using conventional support techniques, which may cause burst fatalities in the coal mine. Thus, an in-situ modification method, which involves artificially constructing a cracked zone and a reinforced zone, was proposed to improve the stability of the roadways with heightened burst risk. This paper investigated the efficiency to non of the in-situ modification method in improving burstroadway safety by performing a physical experiment. The results of the experiment indicated that the dynamic stress was obviously reduced in the modified roadway. Accordingly, the influence factors of the in-situ modification method were explored using numerical simulation. It was found that the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone were key governing factors in reducing energy and improving roadway stability. The energy dissipation value increased as the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone increased but showed a slower growth trend when the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone increased to a certain value. In addition, the high sensitivity to dynamic load was found in parts of the roadway side exhibiting a larger stress reduction rate even with thinner cracked zone thickness and a lower degree of damage. This research provides an effective and economical method for coal roadways with heightened burst risk.

To reveal the overburden failure characteristics during backfill mining, theoretical analysis based on the theory of plates and shells and field measurements were combined. Based on the theory of plates and shells, a mechanical model for the overburden failure mechanism during backfill mining was established, through which the fracture conditions of overburden during backfill mining were judged. By analyzing the fracture process and revealing the fracture mechanism, the fractured zone in overburden during backfill mining was found not to develop uniformly, but changed in a leaping manner. Field measurement was conducted taking the 1327 working face in Xima Coal Mine (Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, China) as an example to monitor and analyze the roof-to-floor convergence (RFC), strata behaviors at the working face, and overburden failure during backfill mining. Monitoring results show that the distance between the monitoring points and the working face was highly consistent with the periodic weighting interval when the RFC increased in a leaping manner; the RFC grew in a leaping manner after each roof weighting, as well as the fractured zone. By monitoring and analyzing overburden failure, it was determined that the maximum height of the fractured zone was 10.7 m and a leaping phenomenon was present in the development process of the fractured zone. The conclusions of theoretical analysis were completely consistent with those of the field measurements, thus confirming the leaping development of the fractured zone in overburden during backfill mining.

The deformation stages of the working face of a mine in front of the roadway were defined based on the location of the roadway and the coal wall in different deformation zones. Observational data of the advancing abutment pressure and the surrounding rock deformation of the roadway from Helin coal mine were analyzed using least squares fitting. The results show that the distance between the boundary of the rapid deformation stage and the deceleration deformation stage and the position where the advancing abutment pressure is equal to the original rock stress is 0.8 m. The distance between the boundary of the large deformation stage and the stable small deformation stage and the peak value of the advancing abutment pressure is 0.3 m. A theoretical analysis indicated that the boundary between the rapid deformation stage and the deceleration deformation stage is located at the intersection of the advancing abutment pressure curve and the original rock stress curve. The boundary between the large deformation stage and the stable small deformation stage is located at the peak value of the advancing abutment pressure.

In order to prevent the multi-dynamic disasters induced by rock burst and roof water inrush in strong rock burst coal seams under multi-aquifers, such as is the case with the 207 working face in the Tingnan coal mine considered in this study, the exhibited characteristics of two types of dynamic disasters, namely rock burst and water inrush, were analyzed. Based on the lithology and predicted caving height of the roof, the contradiction between rock burst and water inrush was analyzed. In light of these analyses, an integrated method, roof pre-splitting at a high position and shattering at a low position, was proposed. According to the results of numerical modelling, pre-crack blasting at higher rock layers enables a cantilever roof cave in time, thereby reducing the risk of rock burst, and pre-crack blasting at underlying rock layers helps increase the crushing degree of the rock, which is beneficial for decreasing the caving height of rock layers above goaf, thereby preventing the occurrence of water inrush. Finally, the proposed method was applied in an engineering case, and the effectiveness of this method for prevention and control of multi-dynamics disasters was evaluated by field observations of the caving height of rock layers and micro-seismic monitoring. As a result, the proposed method works well integrally to prevent and control rock burst and water inrush.

This paper investigated the effect of a multi-echelon support on the asymmetry structural instability of different lithology kilometre-deep roadways. An engineering background investigation was carried out to determine asymmetry instability in different lithology kilometre-deep roadways using acoustic emission signals of in situ rock and 3D in situ ground stress. The mechanical coupling-bearing structure and multi-echelon support method of the surrounding rock were proposed based on the analysis of the secondary stress distribution and strength degradation of the surrounding rock. A numerical simulation and scale-model experiments were conducted to analyse the asymmetry structural failure mechanism and the effect of a multi-echelon support. The results indicated that the high ground stress created a serious impact on the stability of the coupling-bearing strata, an increase in horizontal ground stress created obvious extensions of the weak bearing stratum and the transfer of the main and key bearing strata. The larger asymmetric deformation phenomena of surrounding rock was often accompanied by wedge-shaped roof caving, serious floor heave and spalling, which indicated the decline of the bearing capacity of the surrounding rock. The redesigned multi-echelon support was shown to reduce the scope of a weak bearing stratum and limit the transfer of the main and key bearing strata, preventing the roadway asymmetry structural instability to a certain degree and relieving plastic flow in the surrounding rock.

The mechanism of preventing rockburst through deep-hole precracking blasting was studied based on experimental test, numerical simulation, and field testing. The study results indicate that the deep-hole precracking could change the bursting proneness and stress state of coal-rock mass, thereby preventing the occurrence of rockburst. The bursting proneness of the whole composite structure could be weakened by the deep-hole precracking blasting. The change of stress state in the process of precracking blasting is achieved in two ways: (1) artificially break the roof apart, thus weakening the continuity of the roof strata, effectively inducing the roof caving while reducing its impact strength; and (2) the dynamic shattering and air pressure generated by the blasting can structurally change the properties of the coal-rock mass by mitigating the high stress generation and high elastic energy accumulation, thus breaking the conditions of energy transfer and rock burst occurrence.

The functioning mechanism of groundwater and its make-up water in the process of ground subsidence was studied from such three aspects as osmotic corrasion, osmotic pressure effect and concretion effect. As to osmotic corrasion, its forming conditions, mechanical mechanism and process were analyzed. As to osmotic pressure effect, it was mainly studied from hydrostatic pressurizing effect, sop softening effect and negative pressure sealing effect. Through concretion and saturation of soil, the factors of concretion settlement were analyzed. The results showed that both groundwater and its make-up water are important triggering factors to ground subsidence.
