The gut microbiota is involved in host responses to high altitude. However, the dynamics of intestinal microecology and their association with altitude-related illness are poorly understood. Here, we used a rat model of hypobaric hypoxia challenge to mimic plateau exposure and monitored the gut microbiome, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and bile acids (BAs) over 28 d. We identified weight loss, polycythemia, and pathological cardiac hypertrophy in hypoxic rats, accompanied by a large compositional shift in the gut microbiota, which is mainly driven by the bacterial families of Prevotellaceae, Porphyromonadaceae, and Streptococcaceae. The aberrant gut microbiota was characterized by increased abundance of the Parabacteroides, Alistipes, and Lactococcus genera and a larger Bacteroides to Prevotella ratio. Trans-omics analyses showed that the gut microbiome was significantly correlated with the metabolic abnormalities of SCFAs and BAs in feces, suggesting an interaction network remodeling of the microbiome-metabolome after the hypobaric hypoxia challenge. Interestingly, the transplantation of fecal microbiota significantly increased the diversity of the gut microbiota, partially inhibited the increased abundance of the Bacteroides and Alistipes genera, restored the decrease of plasma propionate, and moderately ameliorated cardiac hypertrophy in hypoxic rats. Our results provide an insight into the longitudinal changes in intestinal microecology during the hypobaric hypoxia challenge. Abnormalities in the gut microbiota and microbial metabolites contribute to the development of high-altitude heart disease in rats.

N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) is an epitranscriptomic modification of mRNA that is catalyzed by N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10), a critical factor known to influence mRNA stability. However, its role in development has not been investigated. In this study, we used CRISPR/Cas9 and RNAi technology to knock out and knock down nat10, the zebrafish ortholog of human NAT10, and evaluated their effects on development, behavior, and transcriptome. Our findings indicate that nat10 deficiency in zebrafish embryos results in increased embryo mortality and developmental abnormalities. Additionally, behavioral and histological evaluations revealed that nat10 knockdown led to increased anxiety-like behavior and severe vision impairment. Transcriptome profiling and RT-PCR results showed that nat10 knockdown significantly downregulated the expression of retinal transcripts that are enriched in response to light stimuli, photoreceptors, and visual perception. Furthermore, dot-blot and RIP-PCR analyses confirmed a significant reduction in ac4C levels in total RNA and opsin mRNA in nat10 knockdown zebrafish. Our results highlight the essential role of ac4C in embryonic development, especially in visual development. This zebrafish model could be helpful for studying ac4C modification in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Local strain, as a small degree and single direction strain method, can effectively regulate the structures and electronic properties of armchair Janus MoSSe nanoribbon, so that the system can be transformed from the original 0.467 eV indirect band gap into 0.259 eV (3-zig), 0.117 eV (3-arm), 0.080 eV (6-arm) and 0.139 eV (9-zig) direct band gap semiconductor according to the different strain degrees and directions. Compared with traditional MoS2 and MoSe2 nanoribbons, Janus MoSSe nanoribbon shows relatively stable band structure under local strain. The structures and electronic properties of Janus MoSSe nanoribbon are anisotropic when the local strain along different directions. Due to the broken mirror symmetry of Janus system and the appearance of in-plane local polarization, the spin polarization effect of Janus nanoribbon under local strain is more remarkable. When the local strain degree C = 0.167 along the zigzag direction and the local strain C ≥ 0.056 along the armchair direction, the Janus nanoribbon exhibits half-metallic property and surprisingly induces magnetic moment. For the local strain along the direction of armchair, the total magnetic moment of the system can be up to 2.05 μB when C = 0.111. To sum up, a local strain method is applied to the nanoribbon system, which can effectively regulate the geometric configuration and electronic structure without external doping, and introduce magnetism, providing the possibility for expanding nanoribbons as potential nanoelectronics and spintronic material.

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) C-based materials have been intensively studied due to their excellent physicochemical properties.

PurposeThis study aimed to compare the surgical efficacy of enlarged laminectomy with lateral mass screw fixation (EL-LMSF) and anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) for multilevel cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy (CMR) related to kyphosis.Methods75 patients were retrospectively reviewed and divided into ACDF and EL-LMSF group. Clinical results including operative time, blood loss, and postoperative complications were compared. The JOA scoring system was used to evaluate spinal cord function and the VAS score evaluate nerve root pain severity. Cervical alignment a C2–C7 was measured with Cobb method and compared to confirm the reconstruction effect.ResultsData on 75 patients (M/F: 41:34; EL-LMSF/ACDF:42/33) with the mean age of 57.5 years (range 43–72 year old) were reviewed retrospectively. Discectomy and/or sub-toal corpectomy in ACDF group was performed with a mean of 3.24 levels (range, 3–4). Enlarged laminectomy in EL-LMSF group was performed with a mean of 3.89 enlarged levels (range, 3–5). The procedure of ACDF group showed a shorter operation time (103 ± 22 min vs. 125 ± 37 min, P = 0.000) and less blood loss (78 ± 15 ml vs. 226 ± 31 ml, P = 0.000) compared than that of the EL-LMSF group. Patients treated with EL-LMSF indicated lower VAS for upper extremity (1.3 ± 1.7 vs. 3.3 ± 1.3, P = 0.003) and better curvature corrected (10.7 ± 4.2° vs. 8.5 ± 3.5°, P = 0.013). The difference were of statistical significance. No statistical difference was found after surgery in the JOA score (14.1 ± 1.7 vs. 13.5 ± 2.1, P = 0.222). During the follow-up period, 15.2% of patients in the ACDF group had complications including 2 cases with transient dysphagia, 1 case with C5 palsy, 1 case with axial pain, and 1 case with screw pullout 3 month after surgery. However, only 9.5% of cases in the EL-LMSF group experienced complications, including 3 cases of axial pain and 1 case of epidural hematoma.ConclusionThe EL-LMSF procedure requires a longer operation time and more blood loss because of the incision of the stenosed foramen. However, the procedure has obvious advantages in relieving nerve root symptoms and correcting cervical curvature with fewer postoperative complications.

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution is an exercisable way to achieve large-scale application of hydrogen energy. It is of great significance to develop an effect, stable, and cost-effective electrocatalyst. Here, we applied the two-dimensional (2D) bismuth (Bi) to the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and proposed the strategies to enhance the catalytic performance of the catalyst. Due to more active sites located along the edges of 2D structure, Bi nanosheets revealed a higher electrocatalytic activity (overpotential of −958 mV vs RHE at 10 mA cm−2, Tafel slope of 122 mV/dec) than the bulk counterpart. To further evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of Bi nanosheets, the typical parameters measured in different H+ concentration (C[H+]) are carried out. The improved catalytic activity obtained in 0.5 M H2SO4 is attributed to enhancing the hydrogen adsorption and accelerating the charge transport on the surface of catalyst. Moreover, the durability of Bi nanosheets has been texted, where the current is not evident fluctuation during the 40,000 s electrolysis measurement indicating its excellent stability. The present work expands the application of Bi in the catalysis and provides the simple strategies to improve its hydrogen evolution performance.

Germanium selenide attracts emerging attention for applications in high-performance field-effect transistors and photodetector, due to its unique photoelectric performances and tunable bandgap. Herein, the germanium selenide-reduced graphene oxide (GeSe-RGO) hybrid is successfully synthesized by loading liquid-phase exfoliated GeSe nanosheets on the 2D graphene via a hydrothermal reduction process. It is demonstrated that the photoresponse performance of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) device constructed by the synthesized GeSe-RGO hybrid is significantly enhanced in comparison to the one built by the sole GeSe nanosheets. The results of the PEC tests display the photocurrent density can reach to 8.45 μA/cm2 at the bias of 0.8 V, which is approximately 4 times that of sole GeSe nanosheets. Meanwhile, with the increase of illumination intensity, the photocurrent density of the GeSe-RGO photodetector almost presents a linear increase. When the illumination intensity is 90 mW/cm2, the photoresponsivity value is up to 116 μA/W. In addition, the GeSe-RGO hybrid shows a durable photoresponse capability under the bias of 0 V, revealing that such a hybrid has the excellent self-powered ability in the PEC system. There is no evident degradation on the photoresponsive performance of GeSe-RGO photodetector after 50 light on-off cycling, indicating the good stability of the hybrids. The enhanced performance of the GeSe-RGO hybrid is attributed to the outstanding photoresponsive capability of RGO and the effective separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Our work indicates that the GeSe-RGO hybrid has great prospects for future applications in PEC-type photodetector devices.

Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanomaterials have emerged as promising candidates for constructing excellent supercapacitors, but the lack of large-scale, efficient and low-cost methods for preparing MoS2 nanosheets severely hinders its practical application. This study demonstrates an accessible and efficient approach for electrochemical exfoliating bulk MoS2 into high-quality MoS2 nanosheets with size distribution in the range of 1–3 μm and a thickness of several nanometers in an easily available inorganic salt solution. Furthermore, we construct symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitors based on exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets. The 2D structure will provide stable channels to facilitate the intercalation/desorption of ions during charge and discharge, and to a certain extent can prevent deposition and agglomeration. Therefore, compared with the unexfoliated MoS2, as-prepared MoS2 nanosheets show great improvement in supercapacitor performance (the specific capacitance increases from the original 130 F g−1 to 215 F g−1 at 5 A g−1, for instance). In detail, the electrode possesses a specific capacitance of 285 F g−1 at a current density of 2 A g−1 and maintains the great capacitance retention of 83.8% at 8 A g−1. Moreover, the supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density of 136.8 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 2550 Wh kg−1. This work provides basic research on the preparation of 2D nanomaterials by electrochemical exfoliation.

Two-dimensional (2D) MoTe2 nanomaterials have emerged as a promising candidate for constructing excellent supercapacitors due to their high capacitive performance. Recent studies have revealed that MoTe2 has broad prospects as an active material in supercapacitors, although its strict requirements in terms of the external environment and complex preparation process remain serious obstacles to its practical application. Toward this end, MoTe2 nanosheets (NSs) were prepared by a facile and inexpensive liquid-phase exfoliation approach for the fabrication of MoTe2 electrodes. The results show that the MoTe2 NSs exhibit significantly improved electrochemical performance, with a specific capacitance (859 F g−1) more than three times that of bulk MoTe2 (271 F g−1) at a current density of 1 A g−1. In addition, the MoTe2-based electrode showed excellent cycle stability and maintained excellent specific capacitance (92.7% of the initial value) after 1000 cycles under the working condition of a current density of 10 A g−1. This study describes a fundamental investigation on the energy storage and conversion properties of 2D layered materials.

We performed density functional theory calculations to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of h-BN/MoS2 heterostructures intercalated with 3d transition-metal (TM) atoms, including V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni atoms. It was found that metal and magnetic semiconductor characteristics are induced in the h-BN/MoS2 heterostructures after intercalating TMs. In addition, the results demonstrate that h-BN sheets could promote charge transfer between the TMs and the heterogeneous structure. Specifically, the h-BN/MoS2 heterostructure transforms from an indirect semiconductor to a metal after intercalating V or Cr atoms in the interlayers. For Mn, Fe, and Co atoms, the bandgaps of the intercalated heterojunction systems become smaller when the spin polarization is 100% at the highest occupied molecular orbital level. However, the system intercalated with Ni atoms exhibits no spin polarization and non-magnetic character. Strong covalent-bonding interactions emerged between the intercalated TMs and the nearest S atom of the h-BN/MoS2 heterostructure. In addition, the magnetic moments of the TM atoms show a decreasing trend for all the interstitial intercalated heterostructures compared with their free-standing states. These results reveal that h-BN/MoS2 heterostructures with intercalated TMs are promising candidates for application in multifarious spintronic devices.

Photodetectors based on intrinsic graphene can operate over a broad wavelength range with ultrafast response, but their responsivity is much lower than commercial silicon photodiodes. The combination of graphene with two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors may enhance the light absorption, but there is still a cutoff wavelength originating from the bandgap of semiconductors. Here, we report a highly responsive broadband photodetector based on the heterostructure of graphene and transition metal carbides (TMCs, more specifically Mo2C). The graphene–Mo2C heterostructure enhanced light absorption over a broad wavelength range from ultraviolet to infrared. In addition, there is very small resistance for photoexcited carriers in both graphene and Mo2C. Consequently, photodetectors based on the graphene–Mo2C heterostructure deliver a very high responsivity from visible to infrared telecommunication wavelengths.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, vertically assembled by two kinds of two-dimensional layered materials with extraordinary electronic and optical properties, has emerged as an interesting candidate in the applications of electronics and optoelectronics. It is known that vacancies are crucial in determining the physical properties of materials, and always exist in the materials during the process of actual experimental preparations and can be artificially introduced. In the present work, the structures and electronic properties of a black phosphorus/molybdenum disulfide (BP/MoS2) vdW heterostructure with P atom vacancies are investigated via first principles calculations. Based on the structural symmetry, two types of heterostructures with single-atom vacancy and three types of heterostructures with diatomic vacancies are constructed. It is found that the presence of a single P atom vacancy leads to the transformation from semiconductor to metal in the BP/MoS2 heterostructure, which is mainly due to the contribution of the remaining P atomic p orbitals based on analyses of the partial density of states (PDOS). On the other hand, the heterostructures with diatomic P atom vacancies still maintain their pristine semiconductor features, along with a decrease in their bandgap value. In addition, the plane electrostatic potential indicates that the introduction of P atom vacancy defects causes a change in the electrostatic potential of the BP atomic layer, resulting in asymmetric electrostatic potential on both sides of the BP layer. Finally, it is interesting to note that the accumulation-depletion of electrons occurs around the vacancy, but also partially emerges at the MoS2 layer. Our results provide the possibility for the application of 2D-vacancy-defect heterostructure systems.

Herein, the TiS2 nanosheets (NSs) are prepared from the TiS2 bulk by the liquid-phase exfoliation to fabricate photoelectrochemical-type (PEC) photodetector. SEM images and Raman spectra show the successful acquisition of the TiS2 NSs. The as-prepared TiS2 photodetector shows self-powered ability with an applicable photoresponsivity that is about 0.37 μA W−1 under zero bias potential and 80 mW cm−2 visible light, and the response time of rise is 0.67 s and the decay time is 2.81 s. In this case, the photodetector is made of ITO-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET), so it can maintain stable performance under the bending conditions. These results display that the as-prepared photodetector has excellent photoelectric properties, which facilitates the development of TiS2 NSs in optoelectronic devices.

Inspired by potential application prospects of spintronics and valleytronics, a novel heterobilayer Janus structure is designed by replacing the chalcogenide atomic layers in the original bilayer MoS2. Based on first-principles calculations, it is found that the SMoS/SeMoS structure exhibits a direct band-gap semiconductor and a typical type-II band alignment with longer carrier lifetime. The transition metal (TM) atom represented by V/Cr/Mn can be stably adsorbed on the heterobilayer Janus SMoS/SeMoS sheet and effectively introduce magnetic moments (m). The calculation results demonstrate that the most stable adsorption site of the TM atom is CX(A), and the TM (V/Cr/Mn) adatom modified SMoS/SeMoS system is converted into metal (V-) or half-metal (Cr/Mn-), respectively. Under the coupling of different indirect exchange interactions, the structure exhibits stable intrinsic anti-ferromagnetic interactions for V-SMoS/SeMoS and ferromagnetic ground state for Cr/Mn-SMoS/SeMoS, respectively, and the magnetic transition temperature (T c) reaches a high temperature or even room temperature. Moreover, the robust out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy ensures stable long-range magnetic order. Specifically, the combination of spin injection and strong spin–orbit coupling interaction effectively breaks the time-reversal symmetry, which leads to valley polarization of the system. Based on this, the biaxial strain can effectively regulate the electronic structure, magnetic properties and valley polarization of TM-SMoS/SeMoS nanosheets with double breaking of spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetry.

It is well known that humans physiologically or pathologically respond to high altitude, with these responses accompanied by alterations in the gut microbiome. To investigate whether gut microbiota modulation can alleviate high-altitude-related diseases, we administered probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics in rat model with altitude-related cardiac impairment after hypobaric hypoxia challenge and observed that all three treatments alleviated cardiac hypertrophy as measured by heart weight-to-body weight ratio and gene expression levels of biomarkers in heart tissue. Understanding the complicated emulsion microstructures by microscopic images will help to further elaborate their mechanisms and relevance. The formidable goal of the classification and quantification of emulsion microstructure appears difficult to achieve. However, object detection algorithm in deep learning makes it feasible. This paper reports a new technique for evaluating Pickering emulsion properties through classification and quantification of the emulsion microstructure by object detection algorithm. The trained neural network models characterize the emulsion droplets by distinguishing between different individual emulsion droplets and morphological mechanisms from numerous microscopic images. The quantified results of the emulsion droplets presented in this study, provide details of statistical changes at different concentrations of the Pickering interface and storage temperatures enabling elucidation of the mechanisms involved. This methodology provides a new quantitative and statistical analysis of emulsion microstructure and properties.

Electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is an efficient, clean, and sustainable strategy to solve energy and environmental problems. As the important alternative materials for noble metals (Pt, Ir, etc.), two-dimensional (2D) materials have been widely applied for electrocatalysis, although the practical performance is restricted by low carrier mobility and slow reaction kinetics. Here, we adopt the strategy of Au nanoparticle modification to achieve the enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of InSe nanosheets. Experimental results prove that the HER performance of InSe nanosheets is significantly enhanced under the modification of Au nanoparticles, and the overpotential (392 mV) and Tafel slope (59 mV/dec) are significantly reduced compared to sole InSe nanosheets (580 mV and 148.2 mV/dec). First-principles calculations have found that the InSe/Au system exhibits metallicity because the free electrons provided by the Au particles are injected into the InSe, thereby improving its conductivity. The difference charge density and localized charge density of InSe/Au show that Au nanoparticle loading can induce the formation of Au-Se electron-transfer channels with electrovalent bond characteristics, which effectively promotes the charge transfer. With the continuous exploration of low-dimensional nanomaterials, two dimensional metal oxides (2DMOs) has been received great interest. However, their further development is limited by the high cost in the preparation process and the unstable states caused by the polarization of surface chemical bonds. Recently, obtaining mental oxides via liquid metals have been considered a surprising method for obtaining 2DMOs. Therefore, how to scientifically choose different preparation methods to obtain 2DMOs applying in different application scenarios is an ongoing process worth discussing. This review will provide some new opportunities for the rational design of 2DMOs based on liquid metals. Firstly, the surface oxidation process and in situ electrical replacement reaction process of liquid metals are introduced in detail, which provides theoretical basis for realizing functional 2DMOs. Secondly, by simple sticking method, gas injection method and ultrasonic method, 2DMOs can be obtained from liquid metal, the characteristics of each method are introduced in detail. Then, this review provides some prospective new ideas for 2DMOs in other energy-related applications such as photodegradation, CO2 reduction and battery applications. Finally, the present challenges and future development prospects of 2DMOs applied in liquid metals are presented.

Spatiotemporally resolved dissection of subcellular proteome is crucial to our understanding of cellular functions in health and disease. We herein report a bioorthogonal and photocatalytic decaging-enabled proximity labeling strategy (CAT-Prox) for spatiotemporally resolved mitochondrial proteome profiling in living cells. Our systematic survey of the photocatalysts has led to the identification of Ir(ppy)2bpy as a bioorthogonal and mitochondria-targeting catalyst that allowed photocontrolled, rapid rescue of azidobenzyl-caged quinone methide as a highly reactive Michael acceptor for proximity-based protein labeling in mitochondria of live cells. Upon careful validation through in vitro labeling, mitochondria-targeting specificity, in situ catalytic activity as well as protein tagging, we applied CAT-Prox for mitochondria proteome profiling in living Hela cells as well as hard-to-transfect macrophage RAW264.7 cells with approximately 70% mitochondria specificity observed from up to 300 proteins enriched. Finally, CAT-Prox was further applied to the dynamic dissection of mitochondria proteome of macrophage cells upon lipopolysaccharide stimulation. By integrating photocatalytic decaging chemistry with proximity-based protein labeling, CAT-Prox offers a general, catalytic, and nongenetic alternative to the enzyme-based proximity labeling strategies for diverse live cell settings.

Photoelectric detectors based on binary transition metal chalcogenides have attracted widespread attention in recent years. However, due to the high-temperature synthesis of binary TMD, high-density deep-level defect states may be generated, leading to poor responsiveness or a long response time. Besides, the addition of an alloy will change the DLDSs from deep to shallow energy levels caused by S vacancies. In this paper, MoS2(1−x)Se2x nanostructures were synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and a novel type of photodetector was fabricated by using the synthesized material as a light sensitive material. The MoSSe-based photodetector not only has a high photocurrent, but also exhibits a wide spectral response in the range of 405 nm to 808 nm. At the same time, it can achieve a responsivity of 1.753 mA W−1 under 660 nm laser irradiation of 1.75 mW mm−2. Therefore, this work can be considered as a method of constructing a new type of photodetector with a simple process and low cost.

Flexible optoelectronic devices have been of great significance in recent years, owing to their extensive commercial and military applications. However, the manufacturing processes of most existing flexible photodetectors are particularly complicated and expensive. Employing a facile and low cost way for constructing a high performance flexible infrared photodetector is one of the effective strategies to facilitate its practical applications. Pencil-drawing is a popular method in novel electronic and optoelectronic devices, as it is a low cost and facile fabrication process. Herein, we report a novel flexible infrared photodetector using liquid-exfoliated Bi2Se3 nanosheets as a light sensitive material, pencil-drawn graphite as the electrodes, and paper as the substrate. The as-fabricated photodetector exhibits high photocurrent, excellent responsivity and long-term stability under 1064 nm infrared light irradiation. In addition, as the pencil-drawn photodetector is made of a flexible paper substrate, it also well exhibits stability and durability under bending conditions. This work is proposed to be a route to construct a novel flexible infrared photodetector with a facile manufacturing process and low cost.

Aiming to find an excellent anode material for Li-ion batteries, we report the two-dimensional Zr2B2 monolayer combining the density functional theory and crystal structure prediction techniques. We find that the monolayer Zr2B2 has initial metallicity and good stability, and keeps excellent electrical conductivity during the whole process of lithiation. The adsorption energy of lithium is −0.628 eV, which is enough to make sure the stability of the processing of lithiation. Furthermore, the ultralow diffusion energy barrier of Li ion on the surface of the monolayer Zr2B2 (17 meV) indicates an excellent charge-discharge rate. The theoretical specific capacity of 526 mA h g−1 is larger than that of the commercial graphite electrode. All these results propose the hexagonal monolayer Zr2B2 as an excellent anode material for Li-ion batteries.

In this report, WS2-reduced graphene oxide (WS2-rGO) hybrid was successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal reduction process in which WS2 nanosheets (WS2 NSs) were prepared by a lithium-ion intercalation and exfoliation technique. The photodetection properties of as-synthesized samples have been systematically investigated using a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system, which presents a reproducible photoresponse of WS2-rGO under zero bias, indicating that such hybrid is a promising photoanode for self-powered photodetectors. At a bias of 0.8 V, the photocurrent density of WS2-rGO hybrid was 4.32 μA/cm2, which is approximately 800% of that of the bare WS2 photodetector. Meanwhile, the photoresponsivity of as-prepared WS2-rGO hybrid increases linearly with the irradiation intensity, up to 9.3 μA/W at power density of 30 mW/cm2. In addition, the stability test exhibits no conspicuous degradation after 100 cycles. The enhanced performance of the WS2-rGO hybrid benefits from the high carrier mobility of rGO and the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers at the WS2-rGO interface. This research demonstrates that the WS2-rGO hybrid has a good prospect in PEC-type photodetectors.
