Abstract

Hyperreactio luteinalis is a benign, pregnancy-related condition with cystic enlargement of the ovaries and elevated androgen. However, only one-third of patients manifest as maternal virilisation and rarely does it cause fetal virilisation. Here, we report a virilised baby girl born to a virilised mother because of hyperreactio luteinalis. This case illustrates our management to maternal and fetal virilisation.

Abstract

Abstract: Mitochondria are highly-dynamic, membrane-bound organelles that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the biochemical reactions in eukaryotic cells. These orga-nelles also communicate with the nucleus and other cellular structures to help maintain somatic homeostasis, allow cellular adaptation to stress, and help maintain the developmental trajectory. Mitochondria also perform numerous other functions to support metabolic, energetic, and epigenet-ic regulation in our cells. There is increasing information on various disorders caused by defects in intrinsic mitochondrial or supporting nuclear genes, on different organ systems. In this review, we have summarized the ultrastructural morphology, structural components, our current understanding of the evolution, biogenesis, dynamics, function, clinical manifestations of mitochondrial dysfunc-tion, and future possibilities. The implications of deficits in mitochondrial dynamics and signaling for embryo viability and offspring health are also explored. We present information from our own clinical and laboratory research in conjunction with information collected from an extensive search in the databases PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus.

15. The Biological Characteristics of Eutopic and Ectopic Endometrial Progenitor Cells in Endometriosis

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify the biological characteristics and potential roles of endometrial progenitor cells in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Background: It is generally believed that progenitor cells in human endometrium are responsible for rapid endometrial regeneration. However, the biological characteristics and potential roles of the paired eutopic and ectopic endometrial progenitor cells in endometriosis remain unclear. Objective: This study intends to isolate the epithelial progenitor (EP) cells and endometrial mesenchymal stem cells (eMSCs) from the eutopic and ectopic endometria from endometriosis patients, further to reveal their features and functions respectively. Methods: The distributions of EP cells and eMSCs and the expression of steroid hormone receptors in the endometrium and endometriotic tissues were assessed by immunohistochemistry. EP cells and eMSCs were sorted from paired eutopic and ectopic endometria with epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) magnetic beads. The clonogenicity, cell viability after being treated with estradiol and progesterone, and cell markers expression were evaluated with colony forming on Matrigel, CCK-8 and immunofluorescence staining, respectively. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were further identified with RNA sequencing. Results: SSEA-1- and PDGFRβ-positive cells were distributed in the epithelial and stromal layers. The ERβ staining was much more intense in endometriotic tissues, but PR expression was almost absent. The ectopic EP cells exhibit strong clonogenicity and ERβ expression but weak PR expression, leading to progesterone resistance. There are 12604 and 13242 DEGs revealed by RNA sequencing between eutopic and ectopic EP cells or eMSCs. GO and KEGG analyses revealed that the functions and pathways of DEGs enriched in cellular energy metabolism and regulation of the immune response, respectively. Additionally, ERβ targets were mainly enriched in ectopic EP cells. Conclusion: Both EP cells and eMSCs may engage in ectopic lesion formation in endometriosis by modifying the metabolic mode and immune tolerance. These data not only help to understand the molecular mechanism of endometriosis but also could potentially contribute to the discovery of therapeutic targets for endometriosis.

31. Productivity Prediction of Garment Employees using Multiple Linear Regression

Abstract

This paper presents a multiple linear curve fitting method for finding how the change of manipulated variables affect the final result using productivity prediction of garment employees data set. To perform fitting, a function is defined, which depends on the parameters that measures the closeness between the data and model. The simplest form of modelling is linear regression, which is the prediction of one variable from another. When the relationship between a few variables are assumed to be linear, then multiple linear regression will be used to model the relationship between a continuous response variable and continuous or categorical explanatory variables.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation are transforming healthcare. Technologies such as machine learning in image analysis, natural language processing in medical chatbots and electronic medical record extraction have the potential to improve screening, diagnostics and prognostication, leading to precision medicine and preventive health. However, it is crucial to ensure that AI research is conducted with scientific rigour to facilitate clinical implementation. Therefore, reporting guidelines have been developed to standardise and streamline the development and validation of AI technologies in health. This commentary proposes a structured approach to utilise these reporting guidelines for the translation of promising AI techniques from research and development into clinical translation, and eventual widespread implementation from bench to bedside. 36. Factors related to microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion in teenagers and young adults: A cone-beam computed tomography study

For patients with maxillary transverse deficiency, selecting an appropriate therapeutic method is important for the treatment effect and prognosis. Our study aimed to explore factors related to microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) in teenagers and young adults using cone-beam computed tomography.Twenty-five patients who underwent MARPE were included in this retrospective study from February 2014 to June 2019. Midpalatal suture density (MPSD) ratio, midpalatal suture maturation (MPSM), bone effect, dentoalveolar effect, and dental effect in maxillary first molar were evaluated using cone-beam computed tomography. Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the MPSD ratio, MPSM, age, and the expansion amount generated by MARPE.Twenty-five patients (mean age, 19.84 ± 3.96 years; range, 15-29 years) with maxillary transverse deficiency were analyzed. Age was negatively correlated with bone expansion, alveolar expansion, and alveolar change (all P 0.05). There was a negative correlation between MPSM and nasal cavity variation, bone expansion, and alveolar change (all P 0.05). The bone expansion was negatively correlated with MPSD ratio 3 (r = -0.417; P 0.05) and MPSD ratio 4 (all P 0.05).Age, MPSM, and MPSD ratio were significantly related to the MARPE effect. Age, MPSM, and MPSD ratio should be considered when choosing MARPE.

Abstract

Cardiac rhabdomyoma is the most common cardiac tumour in childhood, with a strong genetic association to tuberous sclerosis complex. Although most of the patients remain asymptomatic, a small proportion present with cardiac complications in the early neonatal period. Timely initiation of treatment can potentially reduce disease morbidity, and mammalian target of rapamycin (M-TOR) inhibitors play an effective role in promoting regression of these tumours. A healthy term newborn was diagnosed with a giant congenital cardiac rhabdomyoma at birth. He developed clinical signs of compromised cardiac function and progressive myocardial ischaemia, with echocardiography showing significant dyskinesia. He was treated with M-TOR inhibitors and clinical response was monitored via serial echocardiography. Remarkable regression of the tumour was visibly demonstrated within 4 months of sirolimus treatment. The infant continues to be reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians and monitored for features of tuberous sclerosis complex.
