Its design combines the knowledge and expertise gathered by the European solar physics community during the construction and operation of state-of-the-art solar telescopes operating in visible and near-infrared wavelengths: the Swedish 1m Solar Telescope, the German Vacuum Tower Telescope and GREGOR, the French Télescope Héliographique pour l’Étude du Magnétisme et des Instabilités Solaires, and the Dutch Open Telescope. With its 4.2 m primary mirror and an open configuration, EST will become the most powerful European ground-based facility to study the Sun in the coming decades in the visible and near-infrared bands. EST uses the most innovative technological advances: the first adaptive secondary mirror ever used in a solar telescope, a complex multi-conjugate adaptive optics with deformable mirrors that form part of the optical design in a natural way, a polarimetrically compensated telescope design that eliminates the complex temporal variation and wavelength dependence of the telescope Mueller matrix, and an instrument suite containing several (etalon-based) tunable imaging spectropolarimeters and several integral field unit spectropolarimeters. This publication summarises some fundamental science questions that can be addressed with the telescope, together with a complete description of its major subsystems. © C. Q. El Centro de Experiencias Hidrodinámicas de El Pardo (ICTS-CEHIPAR), considerado como Infraestructura Científica y Técnica Singular (ICTS), es parte de la Subdirección General de Sistemas Navales (SGSN) del Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial “Esteban Terradas” (INTA). En el Departamento de Tecnología y Ensayos del ICTS-CEHIPAR, se ha creado recientemente una línea de investigación aplicada a la industria naval y centrada en el estudio de materiales compuestos. En esta línea de investigación se ha marcado como objetivo la monitorización de esfuerzos estructurales en materiales compuestos mediante sensores de fibra óptica en redes de Bragg de difracción (FBGS). Desde el ICTS-CEHIPAR se persigue la mejora de los procedimientos constructivos de modelos para buques y artefactos navales y por ello, el uso de materiales compuestos en estos procedimientos. En este sentido, la implementación de técnicas de instrumentación para la monitorización de esfuerzos en dichos materiales es necesaria para detectar posibles daños debidos a diferentes causas que pueden ocurrir a lo largo de su vida útil. Los resultados obtenidos en los ensayos a escala permitirán aplicar a buques reales las metodologías de fabricación e instrumentación estudiadas, con el fin de incrementar su seguridad y optimizar su mantenimiento. Digestates from anaerobic digestion (AD) can be successfully applied as soil amendments. Here, we investigated changes of the organic matter (OM) composition of digestates from solid-state anaerobic digestion (AD) of straw and pig slurry at different percolate recirculation frequency. Atomic ratios, thermostability indexes, O-alkyl C/alkyl C ratio and Py-GC/MS results consistently showed a positive effect of the highest number (4) of percolate recirculations per day on OM features, resulting in a more stable OM in digestate.

El objetivo principal del presente trabajo consistió en estudiar el balance de carbono en plantaciones de algarrobo, y con ello determinar su potencial para secuestrar CO2 de la atmósfera y contribuir a la mitigación del cambio climático. Para el estudio se utilizaron dos parcelas de algarrobo del Campo de Cartagena sometidas a distintas técnicas culturales. Durante el año 2014 se estudió el intercambio gaseoso por parte del arbolado, así como el carbono almacenado en el suelo y en los tejidos vegetales, considerando la influencia de las técnicas de cultivo utilizadas sobre el balance neto de carbono.

The San Cristóbal pluton is a 35 km2 granitic body that outcrops at the southestern tip of the Sierra de Velasco, located west of La Rioja city, Argentina. It is formed by monzogranites and syenogranites, together with scarce granodiorites, with medium to fine-grained, equigranular to slightly porphyritic textures. Their mineral assemblage consists of quartz + microcline + plagioclase + biotite ± muscovite + zircon + apatite + magnetite. The granite contains dioritic to tonalitic mafic enclaves. The central and eastern parts of the granite have been deformed by the NNW-SSE trending South Mylonitic shear zone formed by mylonitic rocks. The metamorphic host-rock is represented by scarce greenschist facies xenoliths and hornfels with the high T / P assemblage K-feldspar - cordierite - biotite ± sillimanite. The granites are calc-alkaline, weak- to moderately peraluminous, and formed as part of a continental magmatic arc developed along the active margin of western Gondwana during the Early Paleozoic. The depth of emplacement of the San Cristóbal pluton is estimated at ~12 km. El plutón San Cristóbal constituye un cuerpo granítico de 35 km2 que aflora en el extremo sudeste de la Sierra de Velasco, situada al oeste de la ciudad de La Rioja, Argentina. Está formado por monzogranitos y sienogranitos con escasas granodioritas, de texturas equigranulares de grano medio a fino a ligeramente porfíricas. La asociación mineral es cuarzo + microclino + plagioclasa + biotita ± moscovita + circón + apatito + magnetita. Contiene enclaves magmáticos máficos de composición diorítica a tonalítica. El granito fue afectado en su parte media y este por una zona de cizalla, formada por milonitas que integran la Faja Milonítica Sur, de rumbo NNO-SSE. La roca de caja se reconoce por xenolitos de esquistos y cuarcitas en facies esquistos verdes, y septos de corneanas con la paragénesis feldespato potásico cordierita - biotita ± sillimanita. Los granitos son calcoalcalinos, débil a moderadamente peraluminosos, emplazados en un ambiente de arco magmático continental desarrollado en el borde occidental de Gondwana durante el Paleozoico Inferior. La profundidad de emplazamiento del plutón estaría en el orden de los 12 km.

The term Syndrome X defines a group of patients who present symptoms of typical angina pectoris, positive exercise test and normal coronaries in the arteriogram. This study aims to compare the results of 201Tl scan images and washout in Syndrome X patients.24 patients with typical angina and normal arteriogram and 30 normal controls were studied with 201Tl SPECT to evaluate uptake and washout.201Tl perfusion defects were found in 3 out of 24 (12.5%) and washout defects in 22 out of 24 (91.6 %). There is a statistically significant reduction (00.05) in thallium uptake and washout in patients with syndrome X compared to the control group. In addition, patients with syndrome X had a higher thallium uptake at rest than during exercise compared to the healthy subjects.Analysis of the 201Tl washout and thallium uptake can provide addition information in the evaluation of patients with syndrome X since the visual assessment of the cardiac scintigraphy with 201Tl is of limited value. Alterations of the myocardial perfusion in patients with chest pain and normal coronaries can be detected non-invasively with a complete scintigraphic study.

Background: An association between occurrence of wildfires and mortality in the exposed population has been observed in several studies with controversial results for cause-specific mortality. In the Mediterranean area, forest fires usually occur during spring-summer, they overlap with Saharan outbreaks, are associated with increased temperature and their health effects are probably due to an increase in particulate matter. Aim and methods: We analysed the effects of wildfires and particulate matter (PM10) on mortality in 10 southern European cities in Spain, France, Italy and Greece (2003-2010), using satellite data for exposure assessment and Poisson regression models, simulating a case-crossover approach. Results: We found that smoky days were associated with increased cardiovascular mortality (lag 0-5, 6.29%, 95% CIs 1.00 to 11.85). When the effect of PM10 (per 10 mg/m3) was evaluated, there was an increase in natural mortality (0.49%), cardiovascular mortality (0.65%) and respiratory mortality (2.13%) on smoke-free days, but PM10-related mortality was higher on smoky days (natural mortality up to 1.10% and respiratory mortality up to 3.90%) with a suggestion of effect modification for cardiovascular mortality (3.42%, p value for effect modification 0.055), controlling for Saharan dust advections. Conclusions: Smoke is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in urban residents, and PM10 on smoky days has a larger effect on cardiovascular and respiratory mortality than on other days.

In an attempt to elucidate the nature of the bleeding tendency in uremia, some in vitro functions of platelets from eight patients undergoing long-term hemodialysis were studied. None of the patients had diabetes. All had bleeding times longer than eight minutes. Threshold aggregating concentrations for collagen, adenosine diphosphate, and epinephrine, when used singly or in pairs, were two to three times higher than normal in platelet-rich plasmas from these patients. In contrast, those for arachidonic acid and U-46619, a cyclic endoperoxide/thromboxane A2 analogue, were within the normal ranges. Thromboxane B2 formation was normal in response to arachidonic acid (0.2 to 1 mM), whereas it was decreased by 30 to 50 percent in response to thrombin (0.5 to 10 units/ml), collagen (0.5 to 10 micrograms/ml), and the combination of collagen with adenosine diphosphate or epinephrine. There was a partial (about 35 percent) reduction of the platelet granular content of adenosine diphosphate. Secretion of adenosine triphosphate by 5 units/ml of thrombin was 25 to 50 percent less than in normal subjects. Thus, there was a storage pool defect as well. Similar but less severe defects were found in platelets from uremic patients who had never undergone hemodialysis. Partial correction of aggregation and thromboxane B2 formation was seen after dialysis, although platelet adenosine diphosphate content did not increase. It is concluded that the platelet dysfunction in uremia is multifaceted. There appears to be an aggregation and secretion defect related to impaired arachidonic acid release from platelet phospholipids as well as a storage pool defect. The first is improved with dialysis; the second is not.
