Information is given about the finds of the relict species Ruppia maritima in salt lakes in the southeast of Transbaikalia of Russia (Trans-Baikal Territory) and in the northeast of Mongolia. Polylepis albicans Pilger (Rosaceae) is restricted to the Cordillera Blanca in Ancash and La Libertad, northwestern Peru. Here, we report the occurrence of a new population of the species in Huancavelica, central Peru. We analyzed its morphology and compared samples of the new record with samples collected from the Cordillera Blanca, where the main populations of the species are concentrated. We discuss the complex patterns of the geographic distribution P. albicans and the implications for its conservation.

Sperm preservation is an efficient technique used for the recovery, conservation, and management of some endangered fish species. The present study was conducted to explore how preservation time would affect sperm and spawning performance in the endangered delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus). Sperm were preserved with the modified Hanks balanced salt solution at 14.7-16.9 °C. The Kruskal-Wallis test of sperm parameters using OpenCASA plugin in ImageJ software showed that sperm (n = 33♂) had significantly higher velocity and motility within the first 5 s after activation than that of other time points, while sperm had the lowest velocity and motility after 3 min post activation (P 0.001). The findings (n = 30♂) also showed fresh sperm had higher velocity and motility than preserved sperm, while the sperm preserved for over 24 h showed a significantly low performance (P 0.001). The nonlinear mixed effects models of fertilization results (n = 14♂ × 70♀) indicated the fresh sperm and sperm preserved for 1 h had higher fertilization rates than other preservation times (P 0.001). The hatching rate (n = 14♂ × 70♀) also showed the fresh sperm and sperm preserved for 3 min and 1 h had higher hatching rates than other preservation times (P 0.001). Overall, the study showed the best sperm performance in delta smelt was found within the first 5 s post activation, and the best fertilization and hatching rates were found when the sperm were fresh and preserved for 1 h. The findings of this study provide information for the first time about how long the delta smelt's sperm are motile for quality analysis, and how the preservation time can affect sperm quality, fertility, and hatching of this species for future applications.

The rubber boa, Charina bottae is a semi-fossorial, cold-temperature adapted snake that ranges across the wetter and cooler ecoregions of the California Floristic Province. The rubber boa is 1 of 2 species in the family Boidae native to California and currently has 2 recognized subspecies, the Northern rubber boa C. bottae bottae and the Southern rubber boa C. bottae umbratica. Recent genomic work on C. bottae indicates that these 2 subspecies are collectively composed of 4 divergent lineages that separated during the late Miocene. Analysis of habitat suitability indicates that C. bottae umbratica montane sky-island populations from southern California will lose the majority of their habit over the next 70 yr, and is listed as Threatened under the California Endangered Species Act. Here, we report a new, chromosome-level assembly of C. bottae bottae as part of the California Conservation Genomics Project (CCGP). Consistent with the reference genome strategy of the CCGP, we used Pacific Biosciences HiFi long reads and Hi-C chromatin-proximity sequencing technology to produce a de novo assembled genome. The assembly comprises 289 scaffolds covering 1,804,944,895 bp, has a contig N50 of 37.3 Mb, a scaffold N50 of 97 Mb, and BUSCO completeness score of 96.3%, and represents the first reference genome for the Boidae snake family. This genome will enable studies of genetic differentiation and connectivity among C. bottae bottae and C. bottae umbratica populations across California and help manage locally endemic lineages as they confront challenges from human-induced climate warming, droughts, and wildfires across California.

Bush dog (Speothos venaticus) is an endangered wild canid, about which there are still several gaps of knowledge. The species has large home range and can live in environments altered by human activities but requires native habitats. Bush dogs are classified as “endangered” in the Cerrado biome, and the main threats are habitat loss, contraction of diseases from domestic animals and killing by dogs and humans. To contribute with data on the species, we report an unexpected and unprecedented encounter with five bush dogs in a peri-urban reserve, an environment that lies between activities of the Kinross mining company and a residential neighborhood of Paracatu-MG, Brazil, in July 2021. At the time, the animals were seen while marking territory with urine and fecal mucus on a trail widely used by humans and domestic dogs. This is an important and relevant record because, in addition to being unprecedented, as it occurred in a peri-urban environment, it demonstrates the importance of conservation and protection of local areas of native vegetation in the Cerrado biome. Speothos venaticus still needs to be further studied, and effective measures to protect the species, such as population control and health care actions targeting domestic dogs are urgent.

With a current global estimation of 600–700 individuals, Monachus monachus is considered among the most threatened seal species globally and is ranked as “Endangered” by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Mediterranean distribution of the species is fragmented, and the largest known sub-population inhabits its easternmost areas. The present study analyses the occurrence of M. monachus on Samos Island, in the north-eastern Aegean Sea, Greece. From May 2017 to November 2019, data were collected through a combination of monitoring approaches, including visual monitoring from a land position, opportunistic sightings collected by citizen science, and data of stranded individuals. Results indicate the constant occurrence of monk seals in the waters and coastal areas of Samos Island, confirming the importance of this area for conservation purposes. Furthermore, the results show that an integrated methodological approach can contribute to enhancing and increasing data collection, representing an effective method for conservation studies. This approach could be applied in other locations, allowing the scientific community to identify regions of interest, where to expand targeted monitoring and apply conservation measures.

The establishment and management of ex situ breeding and assurance populations around the globe are meant to provide short-term solutions to the formidable loss of amphibian diversity presently occurring. Large multi-scaled facilities, such as zoos and aquariums, can provide the infrastructure to safeguard species and populations. However, often even large, economically viable facilities lack the knowledge to efficiently cater to the plethora of environmentally controlled physiological strategies that amphibians possess. Anurans present a class of amphibians that have often been viewed as easy to maintain ex situ. However, while adult survival may be relatively successful it is rarely accompanied by good reproductive output, health, and fitness. Even more conspicuous is the low survivorship of offspring produced ex situ once they are translocated back into the wild. The mountain yellow-legged frog (R. muscosa) ex situ breeding program EBP is a prime example of the challenges that amphibians EBPs face. Although more research is needed, the R. muscosa program has increased reproductive output and health of its colony by incorporating reproductive technologies and strategic genetic management in conjunction with a greater understanding of the species' natural history, to produce and translocate viable animals each year. This paper highlights the EBPs past decade of research featuring the program's contribution to building empirical, multidisciplinary approaches that boost the robustness of an endangered species, by safeguarding existing genetic diversity and maximizing fitness and survival outcomes.

Disentangling the impact of Late Quaternary climate change from human activities can have crucial implications on the conservation of endangered species. We investigated the population genetics and demography of the Mediterranean monk seal (

Conservation organizations with common missions can find strength and synergy in collaboration. Collaboration can also be challenging, especially finding the right partnerships or organizations to lead. Within the “ecosystem” of conservation organizations, botanical gardens have a unique array of resources and expertise which make them ideal candidates for leadership or partnership in collaborative conservation efforts. We will explore this idea by examining four conservation initiatives at Desert Botanical Garden (Phoenix, AZ, USA) that approach collaborative conservation on regional, state, and international scales. On a regional scale, Metro Phoenix EcoFlora and the Central Arizona Conservation Alliance lead landscape-level conservation by providing a structure for more than 60 official conservation partners, by generating data, and through public engagement needed in a rapidly developing region. On the state scale, Great Milkweed Grow Out is an initiative for pollinator conservation that provides expertise, materials, and opportunities for a wide range of partners across Arizona. Desert Botanical Garden’s endangered plant species conservation efforts provide expertise and resources through horticulture and seed preservation for threatened and endangered plants across the US and internationally. We will share the structure of each program where applicable, how they came to fruition, and their successes. Through each case study, we will highlight the ways positioning within a botanical garden has benefitted the program and success in collaboration. We will also highlight unique challenges. Botanical gardens provide unique opportunities, and they should not be overlooked when seeking a conservation partner or leader.

The common guitarfish (Rhinobatos rhinobatos) is an endangered species and included in the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature as "critically endangered, cr." Although guitarfish are displayed and protected in public aquaria, only limited information is available on the external and internal anatomy of this species and dissection methods applicable to it. In this study, common guitarfish kept in a public aquarium were dissected with an appropriate method and the internal and external organs of the fish were identified. The general examination of the external organs showed that the animals had the typical anatomical structure of guitarfish. The internal organs, including the stomach, intestines, spleen, liver, gall bladder, epigonal organ, testicles, brain, cerebellum, optic lobes and heart were also observed.

The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides an important framework for economic, social, and environmental action. A comprehensive indicator system to aid in the systematic implementation and monitoring of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is unfortunately limited in many countries due to lack of data. The availability of a growing amount of multi-source data and rapid advancements in big data methods and infrastructure provide unique opportunities to mitigate these data shortages and develop innovative methodologies for comparatively monitoring SDGs. Big Earth Data, a special class of big data with spatial attributes, holds tremendous potential to facilitate science, technology, and innovation toward implementing SDGs around the world. Several programs and initiatives in China have invested in Big Earth Data infrastructure and capabilities, and have successfully carried out case studies to demonstrate their utility in sustainability science. This paper presents implementations of Big Earth Data in evaluating SDG indicators, including the development of new algorithms, indicator expansion (for SDG 11.4.1) and indicator extension (for SDG 11.3.1), introduction of a biodiversity risk index as a more effective analysis method for SDG 15.5.1, and several new high-quality data products, such as global net ecosystem productivity, high-resolution global mountain green cover index, and endangered species richness. These innovations are used to present a comprehensive analysis of SDGs 2, 6, 11, 13, 14, and 15 from 2010 to 2020 in China utilizing Big Earth Data, concluding that all six SDGs are on schedule to be achieved by 2030.

Context The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a rare and endangered species to be preserved in China. The giant panda has a low reproductive capacity, and due to the scarcity of samples, studies on testes from giant panda are very limited, with little knowledge about the process of spermatogenesis in this species. Aims To establish the gene expression profiles in cells from the testis of a giant panda. Methods The 10× Genomics single-cell RNA-sequencing platform was applied to cells from the testis of an adult giant panda. Key results We identified eight testicular cell types including six somatic and two germ cell types from our single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets. We also identified the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in each cell type, and performed functional enrichment analysis for the identified testicular cell types. Furthermore, by immunohistochemistry we explored the protein localisation patterns of several marker genes in testes from giant panda. Conclusions Our study has for the first time established the gene expression profiles in cells from the testis of a giant panda. Implications Our data provide a reference catalogue for spermatogenesis and testicular cells in the giant panda, laying the foundation for future breeding and preservation of this endangered species.

Biodiversity is defined as the presence of a variety of living organisms on the Earth that is essential for human survival. However, anthropogenic activities are causing the sixth mass extinction, threatening even our own species. For many animals, dwindling numbers are becoming fragmented populations with low genetic diversity, threatening long-term species viability. With extinction rates 1000–10,000 times greater than natural, ex situ and in situ conservation programmes need additional support to save species. The indefinite storage of cryopreserved (−196°C) viable cells and tissues (cryobanking), followed by assisted or advanced assisted reproductive technology (ART: utilisation of oocytes and spermatozoa to generate offspring; aART: utilisation of somatic cell genetic material to generate offspring), may be the only hope for species’ long-term survival. As such, cryobanking should be considered a necessity for all future conservation strategies. Following cryopreservation, ART/aART can be used to reinstate lost genetics back into a population, resurrecting biodiversity. However, for this to be successful, species-specific protocol optimisation and increased knowledge of basic biology for many taxa are required. Current ART/aART is primarily focused on mammalian taxa; however, this needs to be extended to all, including to some of the most endangered species: amphibians. Gamete, reproductive tissue and somatic cell cryobanking can fill the gap between losing genetic diversity today and future technological developments. This review explores species prioritisation for cryobanking and the successes and challenges of cryopreservation and multiple ARTs/aARTs. We here discuss the value of cryobanking before more species are lost and the potential of advanced reproductive technologies not only to halt but also to reverse biodiversity loss. Lay summary The world is undergoing its sixth mass extinction; however, unlike previous events, the latest is caused by human activities and is resulting in the largest loss of biodiversity (all living things on Earth) for 65 million years. With an extinction rate 1000–10,000-fold greater than natural, this catastrophic decline in biodiversity is threatening our own survival. As the number of individuals within a species declines, genetic diversity reduces, threatening their long-term existence. In this review, the authors summarise approaches to indefinitely preserve living cells and tissues at low temperatures (cryobanking) and the technologies required to resurrect biodiversity. In the future when appropriate techniques become available, these living samples can be thawed and used to reinstate genetic diversity and produce live young ones of endangered species, enabling their long-term survival. The successes and challenges of genome resource cryopreservation are discussed to enable a move towards a future of stable biodiversity.

The southern California coast is well known for its surfing, beachfront towns, and high marine biodiversity. Humans share these coastal regions with species such as the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas; hereafter referred to as “green turtle”). Over the last two decades, East Pacific (EP) green turtles have undergone substantial population recovery. As a result of improved protection efforts at nesting beaches and foraging areas in Michoacán, Mexico beginning in 1979 green turtles have been spotted in more areas and in greater numbers than before since 2014.1 An analysis of existing stranding and sighting data is necessary to protect the growing EP green turtle population and ensure their continued population recovery in highly populated areas along the California coast. While the existing green turtle recovery plan (completed in 1998) addresses EP green turtles, it is dated and does not specifically address current known threats to this population, particularly in southern California. 2 Therefore, this report and accompanying StoryMap (link: https://arcg.is/0eX1zK) provide analyses on time-relevant and local scales. With the support of experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and the University of California San Diego, I review existing literature, analyze stranding and sighting data, and propose recommendations that could help reduce the human impacts on green turtles in the southern California region if implemented.Storymap for this project can be viewed here:https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/391c53f931dd45619347177810259dd3

The three sympatric angel shark species occurring in the Mediterranean – Squatina squatina (the angelshark), Squatina aculeata (the sawback angelshark), and Squatina oculata (the smoothback angelshark) – are all classed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. There is a clear need to better quantify their current status, using appropriate non-destructive methods, to help inform future conservation measures. This study introduces an environmental DNA (eDNA) assay able to detect and distinguish S. aculeata, S. oculata, and S. squatina in the Mediterranean Sea by combining probe-based quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology and Sanger sequencing. The assay targets a 173-bp barcode in the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene. It was tested in silico, in vitro on tissue-extracted DNA, and on eDNA extracted from filtration samples. This genus-specific assay was applied to detect the presence of S. squatina in eDNA samples collected in Corsica, France. The target barcode was found in seven of 76 eDNA samples, revealing the presence of S. squatina in north-western Corsica, where the shark has never been observed, and confirming its existence on the eastern coast. The study also demonstrates that using eDNA sampling, based on 30 L of seawater filtered close to the substrate with a waterproof peristaltic pump, it was possible to detect the eDNA of this rare benthic species. The results of detection can help identify critical areas for angel shark conservation and facilitate the development of local public awareness initiatives. This novel qPCR assay should be used for future applications in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic targeting angel sharks to better identify the remaining populations. In this study the qPCR assay was applied for S. squatina eDNA, but application to S. aculeata and S. oculata still needs to be validated in the field.

Dasyophthalma includes five species of medium-sized butterflies, all endemic from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. All known species are univoltine and are dayflying, differently from other Brassolini that are mostly crepuscular. In despite of recent advances little is known about their natural history. Three out of the five species are included in the Brazilian Red List of threatened fauna and are of conservation concern. The present study provides for the first time a phylogenetic assessment of all Dasyophthalma species based on a molecular approach based on three loci. Also, the taxonomic status of D. rusina delanira was revised based on molecular data. In addition, up-to-date distributional data and conservation aspects of the threatened species from the genus are presented and discussed. The molecular phylogenetic analysis supports the monophyly of Dasyophthalma, with Dynastor darius as its sister-group, and, combined with a genetic divergence analysis, supported Dasyophthalma delanirastat. rest. as a valid name to species-level, sister-group to D. geraensis (and not a subspecies of D. rusina). The geographical range (extent of occurrence and area of occupancy) for all five species are presented, showing that these are very restricted for D. delanirastat. rest. and D. geraensis, following the distributions of the high-altitude forests. As much biological information about the genus is lacking, the present study can serve as a starting point for future studies on Dasyophthalma, adding information that can be crucial for future conservation actions and essential to assure the future of the threatened species in this genus.

The Sitatunga (TragelaphusspekiiSpeke, 1863), the only remaining wetland specialist antelope in Africa, is among antelopes with the fastest declining populations. Knowledge of Sitatunga ecology is vital to the management of the remaining populations, particularly outside protected areas. We examined Sitatunga food sources and habitat selection in a riverine wetland in Uganda. We also assessed local community perceived threats to Sitatunga. We selected three sites/blocks; marshes, vegetation transition between marshes and savanna, and cultivated block. We laid 34 plots (1 ha) along three 10 km transects in the blocks to record food resources and indices of Sitatunga presence. We used binoculars and physical sightings to record Sitatunga and their activities from tourist towers. A questionnaire survey was used to assess Sitatunga threats. We found 39 plant species eaten by Sitatunga of which 58% were in marshes, 36% in the transition, and 6% in the cultivated block. Marshes harboured more Sitatungas than the transition and cultivated block. Local people revealed that poaching (68%) and wetland degradation (33%) are major threats to Sitatunga. To ensure wetland integrity and stability of Sitatunga population, conservation organizations need to reduce the species threats, especially poaching and agricultural encroachment on wetlands.

There are several viral diseases in captive birds. Aves polyomavirus 1 (APyV) and beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) are among the most important in Psittaciformes. The occurrence of these agents has been widely described in various parts of the world; however, little is known about these viruses in South America. APyV and BFDV can cause high morbidity with feather alterations and even mortality. Other variable symptoms could appear depending on the host’s age and taxonomic group. The aim of this study was to detect APyV and BFDV in samples of captive exotic and native Psittaciformes in Brazil. Samples from 120 birds with clinical signs compatible with APyV and/or BFDV were examined. In total, 57 (47.5%) positive birds were found, of which 21 (17.5%) had APyV and 41 (34.17%) had BFDV. Five animals (4.17%) presented concurrent infection. Phylogenetic analysis showed a divergent APyV strain and a diversity of Brazilian BFDV strains. Our study shows that these viruses are present at a significant frequency in captive exotic and native Psittaciformes in Brazil. This study also highlights the need for constant epidemiologic surveillance to preserve bird biodiversity with a focus on endangered Psittaciformes species. This article describes the morpho-anatomies of the leaves and stems of Ocotea paranaensis Brotto, Baitello, CerviSantos (Lauraceae) using light and scanning electron microscopy. The main anatomical features characterizing the species are the presence of simple non-glandular trichomes in the leaves and stems, large secretory cells in the leaves, flat-convex petioles with two small lateral ribs, brachysclereids in the stem cortex and pith, and the presence of starch grains and various types of calcium oxalate crystals in the pith. Histochemical tests indicated the presence of lignin in stone cells, fibers, and xylem. Lipophilic contents were found in the secretory cells. Phenolic compounds were detected in the epidermis, hypodermis, phloem, and xylem. The present study's findings can contribute to the taxonomy and authentication of O. paranaensis. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: This article is the first morpho-anatomical study of Ocotea paranaensis. Anatomy and histochemistry of the leaves and stems were studied by light microscopy, FESEM and EDS. The findings of this study would aid in the species identification and taxonomy.

Rhodothamnus sessilifolius is a species of the Ericaceae family endemic to the Artvin province in NE Turkey. This is in the critically endangered species list and current populations are decreasing, therefore, it requires protection and reproduction. Thus the present study aimed to investigate the effect of various gibberellic acid (GA3) applications on germination of the R. sessilifolius seeds. The effects of various GA3 concentrations on final germination percentage, mean germination time, germination value, and germination rate were analyzed in a growth cabinet. The study demonstrated that gibberellic acid application positively affected germination. Seed percentages of germination were 2.22 %, 18.89 %, 17.78 %, and 15.56 % in the control group for 100, 500 and 1000 ppm GA3 concentrations, respectively. First germination was observed in seeds treated with GA3 after 11 days. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) between all measured germination properties. These results are promising for future conservation strategies.

Since 2005, the world population of Great Bustards Otis tarda has decreased at an annual rate of 3.23%. The current world total is estimated at 31,000–36,000 birds, 34% (range 30–38%) less than 16 years ago. The declines have been observed in nine of 17 countries with extant breeding populations, with highest values in China (-89%) and European Russia (-72%). Marked decreases have also occurred in the Iberian Peninsula, which is still the stronghold for the species with 70–75% of the world population. Within Iberia, declines are particularly alarming in Portugal (-50%), although perhaps even more concerning in Spain, where the -28% (range 25–30%) decrease implies a loss of more than 8,000 individuals. Increases have been only recorded in Germany, Austria, and at a smaller scale in Hungary (respectively, 202%, 91%, and 5%), thanks to continued and intensive conservation actions, and also in the small group breeding in Romania, likely due to dispersal from the increasing West Pannonian population. The isolated populations of Morocco and Iran are on the brink of extinction. More surveys are still needed in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia, to confirm numbers and trends. It is urgent to reinforce conservation actions worldwide to stop negative demographic trends and ensure the survival of the species. If current trends continue, IUCN should perhaps consider whether (a) conditions are met to upgrade the species’ Red List category from globally ‘Vulnerable’ to ‘Endangered’, and (b) the two subspecies should be treated as separate conservation units and require different conservation strategies.

The northwestern pond turtle, Actinemys marmorata, and its recently recognized sister species, the southwestern pond turtle, A. pallida, are the sole aquatic testudines occurring over most of western North America and the only living representatives of the genus Actinemys. Although it historically ranged from Washington state through central California, USA, populations of the northwestern pond turtle have been in decline for decades and the species is afforded state-level protection across its range; it is currently being considered for protection under the US Endangered Species Act. Here, we report a new, chromosome-level assembly of A. marmorata as part of the California Conservation Genomics Project (CCGP). Consistent with the reference genome strategy of the CCGP, we used Pacific Biosciences HiFi long reads and Hi-C chromatin-proximity sequencing technology to produce a de novo assembled genome. The assembly comprises 198 scaffolds spanning 2,319,339,408 base pairs, has a contig N50 of 75 Mb, a scaffold N50 of 146Mb, and BUSCO complete score of 96.7%, making it the most complete testudine assembly of the 24 species from 13 families that are currently available. In combination with the A. pallida reference genome that is currently under construction through the CCGP, the A. marmorata genome will be a powerful tool for documenting landscape genomic diversity, the basis of adaptations to salt tolerance and thermal capacity, and hybridization dynamics between these recently diverged species.

Inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are endangered anadromous fish that have the potential to provide marine-derived nutrients (MDNs) to freshwater ecosystems depending on their population abundance. Salmon have been reintroduced to the Upper Salmon River, but not to the adjacent Point Wolfe River, in Fundy National Park, New Brunswick, Canada. This study determined whether stocking of adult salmon increased the productivity of the river. To examine the incorporation of MDNs, biofilm, leaf litter, Perlidae, Heptageniidae and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were sampled pre- and post-spawning in 2015–2017 from down- and upstream of a natural barrier in both rivers and analyzed for carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes. After salmon spawning in each year, all organisms at the downstream site of the stocked river increased in δ13C and δ15N, with the greatest enrichment in brook trout (δ13C: −23.97‰ to −21.10‰, δ15N: +6.36‰ to +10.73‰). The proportion of MDNs in brook trout after salmon spawning (2015: 23.4%, 2016: 40.7%, 2017: 37.4%) also increased with higher numbers of released adult salmon. Results support the importance of salmon restoration for increasing the proportion of MDNs and productivity in rivers in Atlantic Canada.

In the present study, acute stress responses of adult female Notopterus chitala were scrutinized by antioxidant status and inflammation reaction in the gill and liver at five different salinity exposures (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 ppt). Oxidative defense was assessed by determining superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase, and glutathione reductase activities, while malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione, and xanthine oxidase levels were determined as indicators of oxidative load. Pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TNFα) and caspase 1 levels were also analyzed. Expression levels of transcription factors (NRF2 and NF-κB) and molecular chaperons (HSF, HSP70, and HSP90) were estimated to evaluate their relative contribution to overcome salinity stress. MDA showed a significant (P 0.05) increase (gill, + 25.35-90.14%; liver, + 23.88-80.59%) with salinity; SOD (+ 13.72-45.09%) and CAT (+ 12.73-33.96%) exhibited a sharp increase until 9 ppt, followed by a decrease at the highest salinity (12 ppt) (gill, - 3.92%; liver, - 2.18%). Levels of cytokines were observed to increase (+ 52.8-127.42%) in a parallel pattern with increased salinity. HSP70 and HSP90 expressions were higher in gill tissues than those in liver tissues. NRF2 played pivotal role in reducing salinity-induced oxidative load in both the liver and gills. Attitudes toward wildlife can have direct implications on children's interest in conservation behaviors. Animal programs are an example of interactive, educational experiences that have the potential to change attitudes by providing individuals the opportunity to get close to animal ambassadors and participate in engaging conversations about them. We conducted an animal program assessment with summer camps at the Ohio Wildlife Center to quantify changes in children's affiliation with local wildlife and their willingness to live near local wildlife. Campers showed an overall increase in affiliation and willingness scores from before to after an animal program, although with a small effect size. Overall willingness scores were lower than affiliation scores, but there was a significantly larger increase in willingness following the program. We found a strong correlation between affiliation and willingness scores. Overall, the study found that these animal programs positively influenced children's attitudes toward local wildlife and increased their willingness to live near them, suggesting animal programming could be used to decrease human-wildlife conflict. Visually seeing animals in the programs improved attitude scores, even for those not seen in this study, which suggests that program animals can act as an ambassador for other species. This opens the potential for utilizing animal ambassadors as powerful tools in conservation education about threatened and endangered species.

Illegal wildlife trade has been identified as a major source of global commerce of seahorses. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora listed the genus Hippocampus in Appendix II in 2004, when several countries that commercialized these species also banned transactions through domestic legislation, Peru being one of them. Nevertheless, since the 2004 ban was decreed in Peru, transactions have continued, including international commerce, as well confiscations of illegal seahorse Hippocampus ingens (Girard 1858) products. The authors reviewed three official government sources for information on seahorse trade in Peru, identifying differences in the reporting of the two agencies that monitor exports and imports of seahorses, likely due to non-standardized use of product categorization codes (Partidas Arancelarias). Confiscations reported by one of the agencies confirmed that illegal trade continued despite the ban and in similar amounts of what was exported by Peru before the ban (1053 kg confiscated in 2019 vs. 1460 kg exported in 2004, an estimated 437,888 and 607,067 seahorses, respectively). This review highlights gaps in seahorse conservation in Peru, which include research gaps (e.g., taxonomy, biology and use of habitats) as well as the identification of fisheries impact and improvements in by-catch reporting. This review also highlights areas for possible improvement in international trade (e.g., standardized descriptions of Partidas) that ultimately would allow the country to follow the Convention for Illegal Trade of Endangered Species regulations for seahorses.

It is vital to understand the distribution area of a threatened plant species for its better conservation and management planning. Satyrium nepalense (family: Orchidaceae) is a threatened terrestrial orchid species with valuable medicinal and nutritional properties. The survival of S. nepalense in wild conditions has been challenged by increasing global surface temperature. Hence, understanding the impact of climate change on its potential distribution is crucial to conserve and restore this species. In present study, Maxent species distribution modeling algorithm was used to simulate the current distribution of S. nepalense in India and predict the possible range shift in projected future climate scenarios. A set of 19 bioclimatic variables from WorldClim database were used to predict the potential suitable habitats in current climatic condition and four Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP 2.6, 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5) scenarios by integrating five General Circulation Models (GCMs) for future distribution modeling of species for the years 2050 and 2070. Furthermore, change analysis was performed to identify the suitable habitat in current and future climate for delineating range expansion (gain), contraction (loss), and stable (no change) habitats of species. The Maxent model predicted that ~ 2.38% of the geographical area in India is presently climatically suitable for S. nepalense. The key bioclimatic variables affecting the distribution of studied species were the mean temperature of warmest quarter, mean temperature of wettest quarter, precipitation of warmest quarter, and temperature seasonality. Under future climate change scenarios, the total suitable habitat of S. nepalense will increase slightly in the Himalayan region and likely to migrate towards northward, but in the Western Ghats region, the suitable areas will be lost severely. The net habitat loss under four RCP scenarios was estimated from 26 to 39% for the year 2050, which could further increase from 47 to 60% by the year 2070. The finding of the predictive Maxent modeling approach indicates that warming climates could significantly affect the potential habitats of S. nepalense and hence suitable conservation measures need to be taken to protect this threatened orchid species in wild conditions.

In this study, the early development of Cobitis striata fuchigamii was described using aquarium-spawned eggs and juveniles. Egg yolk diameter after water absorption was 1.0‒1.1 mm, and the spherical, demersal eggs had a light-yellow yolk, no oil droplets, and low viscosity. Newly hatched larvae [4.0–4.5 mm in total length (TL)] had 44‒45 (27‒28 + 17‒18) myomeres (26‒27 between the pectoral fins and the middle of the anus), two pairs of short tubular outer gill filaments on the cheek, and only a few melanophores on parts of the eye. Notochord flexion began at 5.1–6.8 mm TL and ended at 10.0 mm TL. The number of fin rays on each fin was finalized at approximately 25.0 mm TL. Lateral line spots of the larvae were indistinct, and juveniles formed blotches at approximately 25.0 mm TL. The barbels were formed in the following order: third, second, and then first. The formation of membranous fins occurred in the following order: pectoral, caudal, dorsal, anal, and then pelvic; full fin ray complements occurred in the caudal, dorsal, anal, pectoral, and pelvic regions. Some individuals (5.1–7.5 mm TL at the flexion stage) had free lateral neuromasts on the caudal region, each with a short cupula.

South and Southeast Asia is by far the most populous region in Asia, with the greatest number of threatened species. Changes in habitat are a major contributor to biodiversity loss and are more common as a result of land-use changes. As a result, the goal of this study is to use negative binomial regression models to investigate habitat change as one of the important drivers of biodiversity loss in South and Southeast Asian countries from 2013 to 2018. According to the negative binomial estimates, the findings for the habitat change measures are quantitatively similar for the impacts of agricultural land and arable land on biodiversity threats. Agricultural and arable land both have a positive impact on biodiversity loss. We found that, contrary to our expectations, the forest area appears to have an unexpected direct influence on the number of threatened species. A higher number of threatened species is associated with rising per capita income, human population and a low level of corruption control. Finally, the empirical findings are consistent across taxonomic groups, habitat change measures and Poisson-based specifications. Some policy implications that could mitigate biodiversity loss include educating and promoting good governance among the population and increase the conservation effort to sustain green area and national forest parks in each country.

The global rate of wildlife extinctions is accelerating, and the persistence of many species requires conservation breeding programs. A central paradigm of these programs is to preserve the genetic diversity of the founder populations. However, this may preserve original characteristics that make them vulnerable to extinction. We introduce targeted genetic intervention (TGI) as an alternative approach that promotes traits that enable species to persist in the face of threats by changing the incidence of alleles that impact on fitness. The TGI toolkit includes methods with established efficacy in model organisms and agriculture but are largely untried for conservation, such as synthetic biology and artificial selection. We explore TGI approaches as a species-restoration tool for intractable threats including infectious disease and climate change.

G. biloba is native to China and one of the oldest living species. It has high economic value and has been used for medicinal, ornamental and other purposes. The current study sought to assess the potential sustainability of the plantations of the endangered species under climate change scenarios. The sustainability of the existing small wild population and plantations of the species worldwide were evaluated by assessing the changes in the climatic suitability of the areas to be used for the species plantations under different emission scenarios. A survey for the species distribution worldwide showed that it is currently planted in 29 botanic gardens. In Egypt only 31 trees exist in private and public botanic gardens. Propagation and germination experiments have been tested in 4 successive years to assess the effect of climate changes on germination requirements and phenology of the species. Propagation trials showed that seeds that were grown in soil media for 5 months under 25 °C attained high germination rate (>60%). Propagation trials in the nursery by stem cuttings gave promising results (100%) in 2015–2016. Using SDMs approach for assessing the change in the potential climatically suitable areas for the plantations and ex situ conservation of G. biloba under different climate change and emission scenarios, revealed that overall G. biloba is predicted to gain more climatically suitable areas under the four representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCP 2.6, 4.5, 6.0 and 8.5), however, a gain in the climatically suitable areas for the species is expected under the low and moderate emission scenarios and a decline is expected under the more warming scenarios. Also, a northwards shift is predicted in the climatic suitability for the plantations of the species. The projected latitudinal shift needs to be considered by mangers of G. biloba plantations. The provided predictions can guide the managers in developing short- and long-term plans for sustaining the plantations of the species under a precipitously changing climate.

It is not possible to establish the absence of a population with certainty using imperfect zero-sighting records, but absence can be inferred. In this paper we use Bayesian methods to formulate analytical inferred distributions and statistics. When such formulations are available, they offer a highly efficient and powerful means of analysis. Our purpose is to provide accessible and versatile formulations to support an assessment of population absence for management decisions, using data from a series of regular and targeted surveys with zero-sightings. The stochastic processes considered here are prior population size, growth and imperfect detection, which are combined into a single distribution with sufficient flexibility to accommodate alternative distributions for each of the driving processes. Analytical solutions formulated include the inferred mean and variance for population size or number of infested survey-units, the probability of absence, the probability of a series of negative surveys conditional on presence, and the probability a population is first detected in a given survey, although we also formulate other statistics and provide explicit thresholds designed to support management decisions. Our formulation and results are straightforward to apply and provide insight into the nonlinear interactions and general characteristics of such systems. Although motivated by an assessment of population absence following a pest eradication program, results are also relevant to the status of threatened species, to ‘proof-of-freedom’ requirements for trade, and for inferring population size when a population is first detected.

By allowing for the creation of embryo banks, reproductive biotechnologies play an essential role in the preservation of endangered goat breeds' genetic diversity. This study focused on comparing both available embryo collection methods [laparotomy (LAP) vs. nonsurgical embryo recovery (NSER)] in Canindé goats to create an embryo bank for later use in a breed conservation program. Plant collections are important for the conservation of threatened species, and can provide material for ecological restoration. Typically we want collections to have high genetic diversity so populations founded from it are adaptable to future challenges. Sometimes, we have additional objectives for collections, such as enrichment for desirable traits controlled by adaptive alleles. We used landscape genomic data sets for two plants, Westringia fruticosa and Wilkiea huegeliana, to design collections that are genetically diverse, and that are adapted to warming climates. We characterized temperature adaptation by: (i) using the mean annual temperature of the sites of origin of the plants, and (ii) using the representation of alleles that are associated with warm temperatures. In Westringia fruticosa, there was a negative correlation, or tradeoff, between designing a collection that was both genetically diverse and adapted to warm temperatures. This tradeoff was weaker in Wilkiea huegeliana. We hypothesized this was because neutral genetic variation was strongly correlated with temperature in Westringia fruticosa, and not in Wilkiea huegeliana. Accordingly, when we shuffled the temperature data, breaking up the covariance between Westringia fruticosa genetic variation and temperature, there was a relaxation of the observed tradeoff. In summary, we explore tradeoffs between promoting genetic diversity and selecting for a specific trait in plant collections, and show that the strength of this tradeoff varies between two species. This represents a useful step towards understanding when selection will have a large cost in genetic diversity, and when it will be possible to design a collection that is both adapted and adaptable.

El género Pisonia es primordialmente americano, se distribuye principalmente en regiones subtropicales y tropicales. En este trabajo se describe y documenta la nueva especie Pisonia calafia. Este taxon consiste de una relativamente pequeña población en la costa de la región de Los Cabos en la península de Baja California. La principal característica que diferencia a P. calafia del resto de las especies de este género es la carencia de sulcos y glándulas en el fruto. En adición a la descripción morfológica, se documenta la afinidad evolutiva del nuevo taxon con base en el análisis filogenético de la secuencia de nrITS. Las poblaciones conocidas consisten de unas pocas docenas de individuos, seriamente amenazados por el desarrollo de proyectos turísticos en la zona.

We developed a novel statistical model to relate the daily survival and migration dynamics of an endangered anadromous fish to river flow and water temperature during both extreme drought and severe flooding in an intensively managed river system. Our Bayesian temporally stratified multistate mark–recapture model integrates over unobserved travel times and route transitions to efficiently estimate covariate relationships and includes an adjustment for telemetry tag battery failure. We applied the model to acoustic-tagged juvenile Sacramento River winter-run Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and found that survival decreased with decreasing river flows and increased water temperatures. We found that fish were likely to enter a large floodplain during flood conditions and that survival in the floodplain was comparable to the mainstem Sacramento River. Our study demonstrates the response of an endangered anadromous fish population to extreme spatial and temporal variability in habitat accessibility and quality. The general model framework we introduce here can be applied to telemetry of migratory fish through systems with multiple routes to efficiently estimate spatiotemporal variation in survival, travel time, and routing.

Acipenser dabryanus is a species endemic to Yangtze River drainage in China and is listed as a critical endangered species on the IUCN Red List. In the present study, the liver and spleen transcriptomes were analyzed by comparing the data of A. dabryanus that experienced nine different feeding rhythms (once a day diurnal, T1; two times a day diurnal, T2; three times a day diurnal, T3; four times a day, T4; five times a day, T5; six times a day, T6; once a day nocturnal, Tn1; two times a day nocturnal, Tn2; and three times a day nocturnal, Tn3). Transcriptome sequencing generated 1,901,236,482 clean reads, encompassing 570.4 Gb of sequence data. The reads were assembled into 287,372 unigenes with an average length of 803 bp and an N50 of 1004 bp. KEGG analysis showed that 1,080, 1,030, and 1216 unigenes were annotated to lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism, respectively, and 2549 unigenes were annotated to the immune system category. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between different feeding frequency groups or between nighttime and daytime feeding were obtained and functionally enriched. Importantly, DEGs participating in nutrition metabolism and various immunoregulation pathways and their expression profiles in A. dabryanus were discussed. Interestingly, the majority of key genes related to lipid metabolism or in immunodependent gene families, such as antimicrobial peptides, Toll-like receptors, chemokines, NOD-like receptors, B cell receptors and the major histocompatibility complex, were all significantly upregulated in animals in the T6 group compared to the characteristics of animals in the T2 group that had a normal feeding frequency. In addition, light/dark rhythm also affected the immunity of A. dabryanus, and fish fed at night possessed an improved immune response than fish fed at daytime. Our study suggested that feeding six times a day is optimal for A. dabryanus juvenile growth as it enhances the organism's nutrition metabolism and immune function.

The Qilianyu cluster of the Xisha (Paracel) Islands has one of the few remaining green turtle Chelonia mydas rookeries in the China region. Genetic samples were obtained from dead green turtle embryos and hatchlings salvaged from post-hatched nests at Middle Island (n = 3), North Island (n = 9) and South Sand (n = 1) of the Qilianyu cluster in 2017-2019. The ~800 bp mitochondrial DNA control region was sequenced from the samples, and 5 haplotypes were identified belonging to 2 documented clades (clades III and VIII), including 2 new haplotypes (CmP243.1 and CmP244.1) and 3 previously reported haplotypes (CmP18.1, CmP19.1, CmP20.1). These results were combined with previously published mtDNA data for the Qilianyu cluster and nearby (~93 km) Yongle Islands indicating a lack of differentiation based on truncated 384 bp control region sequences (exact test, p = 0.0997; FST = 0.015, p = 0.2760), to represent a single Xisha Islands rookery. The rookery at the Xisha Islands was significantly differentiated (p < 0.01) from all 19 management units (MUs) documented in the Indo-Pacific and Japan regions, supporting recognition of the Xisha Islands rookery as a new independent MU. The results will help inform national and international conservation action plans by China and the countries around the South China Sea to protect green turtles in the West Pacific Ocean.

Hawksbill sea turtles Eretmochelys imbricata inhabiting the Hawaiian Islands are extremely rare and listed as endangered under the US Endangered Species Act. The paucity of data on basic hawksbill ecology continues to hinder effective management of the species. We analyzed stranding data collected between 1984 and 2018 to gain insights into the distribution, demography, and conservation challenges facing hawksbills in Hawai‘i. In doing so, we present a comprehensive description of the population across developmental stages and rank threats that may be impeding their successful recovery. Over the >30 yr data set, we recorded a total of only 111 juvenile and adult hawksbill stranding events. Interactions with nearshore recreational fishing gear were documented for a large proportion (48.6%) of stranding events in the Hawaiian Islands, identifying this as the primary management challenge for the species. Stranding events were biased towards females (female to male sex ratio of 4.8:1.0), which may be indicative of the population as a whole. Even though the majority of hawksbills nest on the islands of Hawai‘i Moloka‘i, and Maui, the greatest number of juvenile to adult strandings was found to be on the island of Oahu (n = 47). Temporal distribution of the majority of adult hawksbill strandings (72.2%) occurred during a 4 mo period between June and September. We discuss these and other findings that help identify future research and conservation efforts to mitigate anthropogenic threats in Hawai‘i for this enigmatic population.

Conservation benefits from incorporating genomics to explore the impacts of population declines, inbreeding, loss of genetic variation and hybridization. Here we use the near-extinct Mariana Islands reedwarbler radiation to showcase how ancient DNA approaches can allow insights into the population dynamics of extinct species and threatened populations for which historical museum specimens or material with low DNA yield (e.g., scats, feathers) are the only sources for DNA. Despite their having paraphyletic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) support the distinctiveness of critically endangered Acrocephalus hiwae and the other three species in the radiation that went extinct between the 1960s and 1990s. Two extinct species, A. yamashinae and A. luscinius, were deeply divergent from each other and from a third less differentiated lineage containing A. hiwae and extinct A. nijoi. Both mtDNA and SNPs suggest that the two isolated populations of A. hiwae from Saipan and Alamagan Islands are sufficiently distinct to warrant subspecies recognition and separate conservation management. We detected no significant differences in genetic diversity or inbreeding between Saipan and Alamagan, nor strong signatures of geographical structuring within either island. However, the implications of possible signatures of inbreeding in both Saipan and Alamagan, and long-term population declines in A. hiwae that pre-date modern anthropogenic threats require further study with denser population sampling. Our study highlights the value that conservation genomics studies of island radiations have as windows onto the possible future for the world's biota as climate change and habitat destruction increasingly fragment their ranges and contribute to rapid declines in population abundances.

Reproductive science in the context of conservation biology is often understood solely in terms of breeding threatened species. Although technologies developed primarily for agriculture or biomedicine have a potentially important role in species conservation, their effectiveness is limited if we regard the main objective of animal conservation as helping to support populations rather than to breed a small number of individuals. The global threats facing wild species include the consequences of climate change, population growth, urbanization, atmospheric and water pollution, and the release of chemicals into the environment, to cite but a few. Reproductive sciences provide important and often unexpected windows into many of these consequences, and our aim here is both to demonstrate the breadth of reproductive science and the importance of basic knowledge and to suggest where some of the insights might be useful in mitigating the problems. Camellia japonica, an evergreen ornamental plant in the Theaceae family, has a natural range that is now shrinking. This is evident by the fact that the species is on the verge of extinction in Laoshan Mountain (Qingdao), the northernmost area of China known to have a natural population of C. japonica. Little is known about the genetic diversity and relationships among cultivated and wild C. japonica populations. One hundred and eighty samples of six C. japonica populations were tested for genetic diversity with simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers; these included three cultivated populations, two natural populations in Qingdao, and one natural population in Daqingshan. The average values of polymorphism information content (PIC), expected heterozygosity (He), and Shannon’s information index (I) were 0.5849, 0.6385 and 1.3170, respectively, indicating that C. japonica has a high genetic diversity. The genetic diversities of the six populations in rank order were as follows: Daqingshan > Zhongshan Park > Changmenyan Island > Daguan Island > Botanical Garden > May Fourth Square. The geographical isolation of the islands had no significant influence on the genetic diversity of C. japonica. Clustering results showed that the six C. japonica populations could be grouped into three categories, and most populations were clustered according to their geographical origin and genetic background. These results also reconfirmed that the C. japonica (Naidong) population in Qingdao originated from Changmenyan Island. Genetic variation was highest within populations (89%), indicating that C. japonica can be protected at the population level. These findings will prove useful for the genetic analysis, protection, and horticultural use of C. japonica.

To date, all captive breeding of the dusky gopher frog, Lithobates sevosus, a federally listed endangered species, has been accomplished using in vitro fertilization (IVF). Here, we describe multievent and highly fecund captive reproduction of dusky gopher frogs driven solely by natural environmental factors. Six pairs of L. sevosus were kept in a 3.7 × 4.4 m

Aquatic vegetation provides many services for aquatic habitats and fish communities. The federally listed fountain darter Etheostoma fonticola, found only in spring systems of the San Marcos and Comal rivers in central Texas, is reported to associate with vegetation for feeding, reproduction, and refuge. Descriptions of associations with vegetation range from preferred to exclusive, whereas other studies describe fountain darters found outside of vegetation. The purposes of this study were to quantify fountain darter occurrences and abundances among vegetated habitats using the concept of obligate and facultative habitat use. Wadeable and non-wadeable habitats among multiple reaches of the San Marcos and Comal rivers were sampled with seines and SCUBA diving methods in the spring and fall from 2014 to 2019. Fountain darters were often associated with aquatic vegetation but demonstrated both obligate and facultative tendencies. Fountain darters occurred in vegetation more than expected among wadeable and non-wadeable habitats in the majority of reaches within the San Marcos and Comal rivers. Among vegetation taxa, they were positively associated with bryophytes and negatively associated with Texas wild rice, but associations with other vegetation taxa varied by river and were possibly influenced by other variables. Current vegetation management in both rivers includes the removal of non-native species and restoration of native vegetation, so understanding the patterns of fountain darter associations with vegetation can guide future management and restoration efforts of these spring systems.

Sample mix-ups occur when samples have accidentally been duplicated, mislabelled or swapped. When samples are subsequently genotyped or sequenced, this can lead to individual IDs being incorrectly linked to genetic data, resulting in incorrect or biased research results, or reduced power to detect true biological patterns. We surveyed the community and found that almost 80% of responding researchers have encountered sample mix-ups. However, many recent studies in the field of molecular ecology do not appear to systematically report individual assignment checks as part of their publications. Although checks may be done, lack of consistent reporting means that it is difficult to assess whether sample mix-ups have occurred or been detected. Here, we present an easy-to-follow sample verification framework that can utilise existing metadata, including species, population structure, sex and pedigree information. We demonstrate its application to a data set representing individuals of a threatened Aotearoa New Zealand bird species, the hihi, genotyped on a 50K SNP array. We detected numerous incorrect genotype-ID associations when comparing observed and genetic sex or comparing to relationships in a verified microsatellite pedigree. The framework proposed here helped to confirm 488 individuals (39%), correct another 20 bird-genotype links, and detect hundreds of incorrect sample IDs, emphasizing the value of routinely checking genetic and genomic data sets for their accuracy. We therefore promote the implementation and reporting of this simple yet effective sample verification framework as a standardized quality control step for studies in the field of molecular ecology.

A comprehensive understanding of mechanisms of allelopathy and resource availability is critical for protecting rare and endangered species, biodiversity, and ecosystems. We treated 20 major plant species with three concentrations of an aqueous extract of Dacrydium pierrei Hickel litter and different irrigation and nutrients to compare the relative importance of allelopathy and resource availability on roots, stem growth, and seed germination, using bioassays. The results showed that the height, ground diameter, and aboveground biomass of individuals increased more quickly in the early stage, and the rate of increase tended to slow down in the later stages. The allelopathy was species specific (inhibitory, neutral, or promotive), and the survival rate and growth rate of saplings changed significantly along a resource treatment gradient (P < 0.05), indicating that the native species diversity was reduced by lower or higher resource availability in natural forests. The effect of allelopathy on trees was relatively weak during the treatments, and that of resource availability was relatively strong. Resource availability is relatively more important than allelopathy in mediating the reduction in plant biodiversity. Therefore, water and nutrient availability and the species and number of allelochemicals released by plants have substantial influences on the survival and growth of plant species in a natural Dacrydium forest.

Paphiopedilum dianthum and P. micranthum are two endangered orchid species, with high ornamental and conservation values. They are sympatric species, but their leaf anatomical traits and flowering period have significant differences. However, it is unclear whether the differences in leaf structure of the two species will affect their adaptabilities to temperature. Here, we investigated the leaf photosynthetic, anatomical, and flowering traits of these two species at three sites with different temperatures (Kunming, 16.7 ± 0.2 °C; Puer, 17.7 ± 0.2 °C; Menglun, 23.3 ± 0.2 °C) in southwest China. Compared with those at Puer and Kunming, the values of light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf thickness (LT), and stomatal density (SD) in both species were lower at Menglun. The values of Pmax, gs, LT, adaxial cuticle thickness (CTad) and SD in P. dianthum were higher than those of P. micranthum at the three sites. Compared with P. dianthum, there were no flowering plants of P. micranthum at Menglun. These results indicated that both species were less resistance to high temperature, and P. dianthum had a stronger adaptability to high-temperature than P. micranthum. Our findings can provide valuable information for the conservation and cultivation of Paphiopedilum species.

In North America, impassable, man-made barriers block access to salmonid spawning habitat and require costly restoration efforts in the remaining habitats. Evaluating restored spawning habitat quality requires information on salmon water velocity and depth preferences, which may vary in relation to other variables (e.g., water temperature). We demonstrate a generalizable, low-cost method to gather and analyze these data by combining aerial redd surveys of winter-run Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), 2D hydraulic modeling, and generalized linear models to calculate spawning resource selection functions (RSFs). Our method permits the examination of interactions between environmental variables and habitat selection, which are frequently treated as independent. Our methods resulted in an RSF that shows interactions between both velocity and depth preference with changing temperature. Preferred depth increased and preferred velocity decreased with increasing temperature. Spawning RSFs for environmental variables may change as other environmental conditions (i.e., water temperature) change; thus, it is important to account for potential interactions when using or producing RSFs.
