This study intended to develop an android-based application for English vocabulary learning for primary school students. By implementing Design and Development design model, the researcher underwent three main stages namely; 1) Design, 2) Development, and 3) Evaluation. Through the use of questionnaires and interview guide, the needs were assessed. The results showed that the primary school students need more time to learn English and emphasize more on vocabulary learning. The primary school students need a smartphone application which provides vocabulary practice, test and entertainment about the topics learnt in the class. The smartphone application was developed in Android Package Kit (APK) format designed by using Microsoft Power Point. Contrasted to others, this smartphone application provides vocabulary practices, quizzes, and games for all topics that 4, 5, and 6 graders need to learn. The smartphone application was tested and evaluated by 5 English teachers and 2 technology experts to find out the quality. The results showed that the application has a very good quality and ready to be installed and used in Android smartphone. An effective use of the application with meaningful learning activities for vocabulary learning for young learners are strongly suggested.

The idea of integrating Islamic values in non-religion subjects is still in the process of shaping its format. Many possibilities and flexibilities of the integration are existing and practiced by English teachers at Islamic Junior High School—knowingly as Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs). Also, in the middle of endless idea of integration, teachers have been trying to apply the integration based on their beliefs and situation. This study outlines the teachers’ best practices on integrating Islamic values in English lesson at MTs in Jawa Timur. By using descriptive qualitative method, this study portraits 6 English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ best practices. Data were taken from classroom observation, interview, and documentation which then were analysed as best practices. Best practices refer to the practice of integration which is considered as working practice from each teacher’s situation. The situation was mostly influenced by teachers’ lack of confidence to contextualize and operationalize the values into the teaching materials and activities, and the lack of model for integration. Further study on how to operationalize the integration, and on developing the model of integration will be worth exploring.

This study sought to determine the sequence of L2 morpheme presentation, as well as to determine whether or not the sequence of morpheme presentations correspond with the recognized natural order of morpheme acquisition in English Language Teaching course books utilized with young adult learners at a public sector vocational education institution in Thailand. Qualitative analysis was employed in the scrutinizing of twelve beginner and elementary level ESL and EFL learners course books that have been utilized as the primary teaching material for over a decade by the general education department of the institute. This examination revealed that the morpheme presentation sequence within the selected ELT course books was not analogous with the conclusions in the supporting literature. The findings further indicated that the widely accepted viewpoint of natural order morpheme acquisition was likewise not substantially reflected within the analyzed texts. Albeit, earlier studies have found that an unnatural sequence of morpheme presentation in EFL course books may hamper communicative competence in English, further study is required to establish if this may be a contributing factor for the overall low English proficiency of adult L2 learners in Thailand.

Different types of social or cultural background, combined with a region or social status, go into the making of spoken or written discourse. One of the interesting spoken discourses to discuss is political interview. It often reveals the intention of political leaders’ way of speaking. While there are those who are subtle in their way of talking, there are also a few who do not, one of whom is the Philippines’ president, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Known for his outspoken personality, he often states controversial things that influence his country and derive critics from various places. Using van Dijk’s (2004) framework, this study analyzes the macro and micro discursive strategies used by Duterte in delivering his views on other countries’ relations with the Philippines based on his most-watched English interview with Russia Today. The findings revealed that the macro strategies used by Duterte are positive self-presentation, negative other-presentation, and outside polarization. Meanwhile, the mostly micro discursive strategies used are implication, lexicalization, and example/illustration.

Political ideologies and power are shaped by politicians’ manipulation of linguistic features that appeared in their public discourses. Employing transitivity system, this study investigated President Donald Trump’s speech during the 2020 “March for Life†to identify the transitivity processes and to determine how these processes are assimilated in the said discourse. Findings revealed that 126 transitivity processes are dominantly material, relational, and mental. Being the first US president who graced this event, material processes constructed a self-statement of initiatives and efforts in preserving human life and his attack on his political nemesis as threats to the preservation of the value and dignity of life. Relational processes have constructed life-protection ideas by valuing the significance of the children and the unborn. Trump’s feelings toward the dignity of life are shaped by mental processes by his direct association to the public as among the advocates of human life.  Ironically, transitivity processes have shown minimal involvement of women in his speech, contrary to the theme. Data prove that language employed in a public discourse builds power and ideologies that serve as the human framework to understand the mind of the speaker.

The present study aimed to examine the attitudes and types of metaphorical perceptions of male and female prospective English teachers (PETs) towards their English learning process. Elicitation sheet with the prompt “English learning is (like) … because …†was used to collect the data. The data were qualitatively analyzed by listing, naming, categorizing, and determining the metaphors. The results of the elicited metaphors reveal that male and female PETs’ attitudes towards English learning process include positive, negative, ambivalent, and neutral perceptions. Both male and female PETs viewed English learning in different attitudes. Male PETs generated more negative attitudes than the positive ones, while female PETs produced more positive attitudes than the negative ones. The findings also show that the metaphors were categorized into several types such as enjoyable activity, construction work, movement/journey, experience, planting/farming, exploration, and things. These types of metaphor imply the importance of the socio-cultural background of the learners. In conclusion, the metaphors help to determine appropriate strategies, methods, and materials for English teaching and learning.

This study reflects the best practice of the English immersion program designed for EFL learners. Through observation in the research site and interview with eight participants (two language managers and six language learners), the modified model is discovered as the guidelines in ruling the project in which curriculum, English proficiency, and language management are the main points. Besides, Informal learning becomes the hot issue of this study since the English zone facilitates English informal interaction between language partners and learners which enhances English learning experiences effectively and motivates them to use English. The finding also reported that English immersion program emerges learning community, personal qualities development, English language acquisition, and self-efficacy, language awareness and language exposure The study may contribute to the body of knowledge in second language acquisition and recommend schools or universities and other related institutions to implement English immersion program as the alternative solution for English language learning in non-native speaking countries.

This study aims to investigate the concept of a large class, challenges and issues faced by the teachers while teaching writing skills courses in large classes along with the strategies they use in order to cater to the problems. Therefore, in-depth interviews with nine private and public sector university teachers were conducted. The thematic analysis of the data revealed that a large class, in the Pakistani context, consists of 30 to 35 students and teachers particularly face the problems in assessment, giving feedback, ensuring individual attention, maintaining discipline, and controlling noise factor, etc. The assessment and feedback issues can be catered to by using peer assessment and peer feedback as they are viable strategies to deal with the large writing classes. In order to reduce the noise factor, some related activities can be practised to ensure maximum involvement of learners and ultimately, it reduces the disruptive noise. Identification of students in terms of their behaviour and seriousness towards learning paves the way for choosing appropriate teaching techniques which in turn helps to manage large writing classes having mixed ability students to achieve objectives of the course.

The development of language learning mobile application soft-wares (apps) for smart mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computer has risen amazingly in these recent days. These apps were continuously reported to be highly potential to support the students to learn the target language. This study introduced two free English learning apps to the students and investigated how they made use of the apps to support their English learning. More specifically, it examined how their English motivation in learning English is, how they used the apps, and whether their different level of motivation influenced the time they spent in accessing the apps. The study was conducted in a mixed method approach utilizing daily journal and questionnaire as the instruments to collect data. The finding pointed that the students were considerably active in using both of the apps. They could enjoy the practicality and flexibility of learning English by the apps despite some superficial engagement. In addition, although students’ English learning motivation was found to have no influence on the amount of time spent in using the apps, their positive response toward using the apps was a potential indication to foster independent English learning outside the classroom. A further detailed finding was discussed along with important issues in the current trends of mobile language learning.

The current study is intended to explore the typology of other-initiated self-repair in term of its frequency of occurrence and to investigate the mechanism of self-repair in an academic setting. To obtain the required data, a classroom conversational analysis was conducted in which the researchers observed a group of graduate students (19 active EFL speakers) in a state university in East Java, Indonesia. Based on the qualitative data analysis, the results of the study revealed that all typologies of other-initiated selfrepair were used depending on the aims the interlocutors try to gain since all typologies have diverse aims and ways. Of all typologies, confirming checks were dominantly used by the participants. Regarding the mechanisms, three types of mechanisms were found; full two-cycle repair, background check, and short-cut repair sequence.

This research is aimed at questing adult EFL learners’ self-directed learning performance in an Indonesian University. A case study is purposely employed to probing the learning behavior performed by adult learners when English language learning is taken as the context of this research carried out. Three student teachers are determined to be interviewed to obtain data. The acquired data is analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The study discovers that the EFL learners performed various activities presenting their self-directed learning in terms of learning motivation, learning strategy, selfmonitoring, and social competence. This research contributes to body knowledge of English language learning at higher education in which a teacher will be able to choose or select appropriate teaching strategies dealing with learners’ learning behaviour promoting autonomous learning. The findings also suggest the learners to conduct learning process properly since selfdirected learning enables the learners to maximize their both internal and external potentials in order to achieve better English achievement.

Reading and comprehending a text or selection in a language that is different from one’s native tongue can be a daunting task to many English as a Second Language (ESL) learners due to several reasons. Hence, teachers’ instructional strategies play a pivotal role in developing students’ reading skills. This study used a quasi-experimental design to discover the effects of using explicit or direct teaching of metacognitive strategies on the reading skills of students—comprehension skills and vocabulary. Forty grade 11 ESL students from a Chinese–Filipino school in Manila were selected through convenience sampling to be participants of the study. The performance of the two groups in comprehension and vocabulary was compared through pre-test and post-test. Using two-tailed t-test of dependent means, the significant difference between students’ performance in the reading comprehension test and the vocabulary test after the intervention was determined. Based on the results, there is no question that one’s comprehension and vocabulary size could be improved using explicit teaching of metacognitive strategies. The study has practical implications to the teaching of reading among ESL learners. Recommendations for future research are also provided in this paper.

The purpose of this study is to investigate instagram use among English pre-service teachers (EPST) to support their language learning in a particular course. This study sought to explore the following research questions: (1) How do EPST explore instagram to accomplish Online Task-Based Language Learning (OTBLL)? (2) What contents are created and shared by EPST to accomplish OTBLL? To collect the data, this study applied observation and content analysis. In addition several tasks were designed to be accomplished by EPST. The findings shows that EPST were able to integrate both the ability to use instagram and the ability to integrate it for OTBLL. The contents that EPST created and shared met the requirement of OTBLL. The contents included several types: creating video to explain topic assigned, writing phonetic transcription, and other tasks. The results of this study are expected to contribute in improving EPST language skills and their ability to explore social media use for language learning. Being able to seize social media to support language learning is a necessary skill to be nurtured for future language teacher in the 21st century.

The recommended model of teaching English for students of non-English department is collaborative teaching which provides subject lecturer‘s involvement in the curriculum design. This paper reported the process of designing a syllabus of collaborative teaching for ESP teaching in Indonesian context. As a part of curriculum design, this ESP syllabus focuses on content area reading in the area of physics. Several text types commonly used in physics department and vocabulary building of academic word lists and the ones related to physics area study were elaborated as well. The paper concludes that the implementation of this program needs high commitment from the stakeholders in order to make the program successfully implemented. Although the flipped classroom has attracted much attention, the flipped classroom research in the English teaching context has not been widely explored. This research is intended (1) to explore the general responses of English teachers toward the flipped classroom methodology and (2) to investigate the perceived benefits and challenges of its implementation in English teaching. The total of 10 English teachers from different institutions that applied flipped classroom participated in this research. The data were collected byusing questionnaire and interviews. The data were analyzed by using quantitative descriptive and qualitative data analysis. The results reveal that English teachers have positive responses to the flipped classroom methodology. Some perceived benefits of its implementation are facilitating active learning, developing collaborative teamwork, stimulating autonomous learning, and increasing classroom interaction. Meanwhile, the perceived challenges of its implementation deal with supporting facilities, technical and technological problems, and the challenge of creating flipped learning material.

This study is conducted to determine the effectiveness of teaching grammar-in-context to minimize students‘ grammatical errors in writing. The design of the study was a quasi-experimental with a non-randomized pretest-posttest control group. The samples of the study were taken from the population of the tenth-grade students. The control group was taught by conventional grammar which was separately given with writing skills. Likewise, the experimental one was treated by teaching grammar-in-context. The results of the study showed that the mean score in the post-test was higher than that in the pretest; and the mean score of experimental group increased 16.20 point after the treatment. This result indicated that teaching grammarin- context is considered to be effective in minimizing students‘ grammatical errors in writing. Keywords: grammar-in-context, grammatical errors

This study aims to examine EFL learners’ perception toward the application of Orai App in CLL method in teaching speaking. The study employed likert-scale questionnaires to enable researchers to collect massive data. The total of 24 first year students of a private university in East Java – Indonesia, comprising of 5 male and 19 female students participated in this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic by finding out the total score per item. The results of this study illustrated that Orai application helps students alleviate the fear of speaking. It can also help students in increasing their speaking ability on the aspects of pronunciation, intonation as well as the speaking speed. Based on the data analysis, CLL method assisted by Orai application is strongly recommended to be used to assist the students to be better speaker.

This study aims at identifying the contribution of parents’ socio-economic status (SES) toward their views on the teaching English for children. A survey technique with questionnaires and interviews was utilized to collect the data from 245 parents as the respondents. SPSS with Predictive Analysis Software (PASW) statistics 18 has been employed to analyze the collected data. Descriptively, the reseacher found that parents with different SES have showed similar beliefs on the importance of English mastery. They made acommitment to keep supporting their children with English. It was also found that although their knowledge on EYL was limited, their views and attitudes were good. Statistically, it showed that parents’ social and economic status either in their education, occupation, or income and their views on EYL were not significantly correlated. It came to the conclusion that parents today have equal vision in preparing their children with good education.

This research investigates the vocational school students’ needs on the implementation of English teaching and learning that is focused on the target needs and learning needs. By adapting Hutchinson and Waters’ model (1987), questionnaire consisting of parts A and B was administered to 32 students. Part A deals with the target needs centred on the learner’s necessities, lacks and wants that are effectively functioned in the target situation. In contrast, part B concerns about learning needs that encompass learning inputs, procedures, teacher’s and learners’ role, and setting. Additionally, interviews were also conducted with the students and an English teacher to gather data in order to examine in-depth results of the practices of English teaching and to uncover possible areas of students’ language difficulties in learning English. The results suggested that the students have different perceptions of their necessities, wants, and lacks. The findings also demonstrated the students’ learning needs including the learning inputs, teaching-learning procedures, the teacher’s and learners’ role, as well as the teachinglearning settings.

This study investigates the argumentative statements of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during the debates. By employing two theories, Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Toulmin's model of argument, it aims to expose how various ideologies are expressed in the structure of arguments. It uses Toulmin (2003) model of argument to analyze the structures of argumentation during the debates constituting six elements (i.e. claim, data, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal). While Van Dijk’s framework covering three levels of discourse structure (the meaning, the argumentation and the rhetoric) is used to analyze the reproduction of racism, manipulation, and Islamophobia. The result indicates the discourse of the candidates contributes the reproduction of manipulation by focusing on the positive self-presentation of “us” (civilized) and negative other-presentationof “them” (terrorists) as a mind control of the audience.

The study investigates perceived challenges that pre-service teachers (henceforth refers to PSTs) majoring in an English Education Program of a state university in the Province of Gorontalo, Indonesia, experience in improving their English oral proficiency level. Data from the PSTs were collected mainly using individual semistructured interviews, and then corroborated with the interview results collected from several lecturers who participated voluntarily. Informed by a thematic analysis approach, the study shows that the PSTs reported three main areas of challenges; linguistic proficiency, socio-culture, and English language engagement opportunity. Recommendations seeking to assist PSTs as well as the English Education Program in anticipating such challenges are also addressed.

Recently, developing students’ thinking, especially critical thinking (CT), has become a hot issue. Critical thinking has been claimed to have an important impact on learners’ reading comprehension because it can help them analyze, evaluate, construct their thinking, solving problems and reasoning (Ennis, 1989). However, the extent that teachers’ classroom activities contribute to developing students’ critical thinking has rarely been researched. The current case study was conducted with six EFL high school teachers and 10 reading lessons in Vietnam to explore the teachers’ use of questions and to analyze if these questions could facilitate the students’ critical thinking. Classroom observations and the cognitive domain of Bloom’s taxonomy were adapted as the research instruments. The study results reveal common types of questions are often used by high school teachers in their reading lessons. Suggestions are made on types of questions that teachers should function more in their class in order to enhance students’ critical thinking.

The general purpose of the study was to investigate EFL learners’ speaking anxiety and its associated factors. More specifically, the study purposed to examine was the constructs of a speaking anxiety questionnaire and to explore the model for predicting speaking anxiety based on gender, proficiency and class type. Therefore, explanatory factor analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. The result of factor analysis indicated that there are two factors in the questions, but they are difficult to name as a result of overlapping variables in each component. With regards to a multiple linear regression test, the finding shows that proficiency variable is the most significant factor for predicting the variation in speaking anxiety.

Writing essay is still considered difficult for English students to master. The students are expected to be able to express their ideas correctly without making any chance of messages to be misinterpreted by the readers; therefore, they have to know and use the best or the most appropriate ways to write. The purpose of writing this article is to introduce learning strategies and the possibility of training of learning strategies in writing essay to English students. The first strategy is integration of strategy with the process of writing essay: pre-writing, writing draft, and post-writing activities. The second is training learning strategies, such as memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies to students to make writing essay easier, faster, more enjoyable, more effective, and more self-directed to achieve the desired result in their writing. To get better result of improvement, the model of training of learning strategies in writing essay should be applied and developed based on the appropriateness of teachers, learners, subjects, and situations. This study aims 1) to compare the speaking performance of university students who graduated from Islamic boarding school and public school-based senior high schools and 2) to investigate the potential factors affecting the difference of their speaking performance. First year students of a State Islamic University in Lampung - Indonesia participated as the subjects of research. The data of students’ speaking performance was obtained from the documentation of students’ speaking entrance test score. Then, a semi-closed-ended questionnaire investigating the curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs in their previous high schools covering the sorts, the frequency, and the duration of the activities was distributed to disclose the underlying reasons of the speaking performance differences. The results revealed that generally the Islamic boarding school-based senior high school graduates’ speaking performance is slightly better than the public-based one with a minor difference on the five aspects of speaking assessment. The former showed better achievement in fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, whereas the latter got better result in grammar and pronunciation. Dissimilar variations of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at both types of school and the frequency of the activities might be the potential factors affecting the differences.

The purpose of this research was to develop an EFL course book for the first semester learners at the Islamic junior high school in Indonesia. The material development includes some procedures of need analysis, material development, expert validation, material revision, try-out and final revision. Based on the results of questionnaires distributed to 106-second graders, the interviews done to the teachers and field notes taken from a document of the syllabus, this research revealed that most of the students and English teachers require English instructional materials embracing religious and general knowledge. After validated by the experts and tried-out to the students, this research finally produced English materials that were supplemented by a teacher‟s guide, student‟s worksheets and a CD containing listening materials.

This present study aims to investigate direct and indirect factors affecting willingness to communicate (WTC) in L2 by using Facebook. The emergence of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) and Social Networking Sites (SNSs) such as Facebook (FB) provides the considerable changes in teaching and learning. Learning which is not only carried out in the classroom, but also out of the classroom. A new trend of using Social Networking Sites (SNSs) has been highlighted recently to prompt learners’ L2 WTC. 156 participants of university students of English Department participated by filling out a set of questionnaire with a 5-point Likert-scale encompassing students’ perception, motivation, communicative self-confidence (CSC), and Willingness to Communicate (L2 WTC). The participants are second semester English students from private and state universities in three cities in Indonesia: Surabaya, Bali, and Malang . Data collection and analysis used a software package, AMOS 20, to gauge the magnitude of the factors affecting L2 WTC by using FB platform. The finding shows that there are considerable effects on perception and motivation mediated by communicative self-confidence to WTC. While, communicative self-confidence shows the strongest predictor on L2 WTC.

To have good acquisition and awareness in reading, the learners need a long and continuous process, and therefore, they are required to have autonomy in learning reading. This study aims to promote learner autonomy in reading class by combining learner-centered reading teaching and extensive reading teaching. Learner-centered reading teaching was carried out through group discussion, presentation, and language awareness activities. Meanwhile, extensive reading teaching was done to review the learners‘ materials in presentation and reinforce their acquisition. Those two different approaches were applied due to differences on learner's characteristics and needs. The result showed some success in the practice of autonomy, indicated by changes on learners' attitude. However, many learners showed that they focused more on obtaining score than on developing their language acquisition. By implementing the approach, the teacher can assist learners to be aware of their ability to learn independently and equip them with the skill needed for long-life learning. This study aims to explore the difference between the field independent (FI) and field dependent (FD) learners in the area of EFL critical reading skills. To this end, 60 undergraduate EFL students who had taken and passed the Critical Reading course involved as the subjects. The Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) was administered to classify the students’ cognitive styles into FI and FD groups. Furthermore, to measure the students’ critical reading skills, the critical reading comprehension test (CRCT) in the form of multiple choice questions was developed and administered. The test items were focused on assessing students’ analytical and inferential skills of reading texts, specifically on determining the main idea, the purpose, the tone, making an inference and taking conclusion. The findings indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in the critical reading skills between FI and FD students. More specifically, the differences are in determining the main idea, determining the purpose, making an inference, and taking the conclusion of the texts in the CRCT. Pedagogically, selecting appropriate reading texts to be used in Critical Reading course practice for developing the students’ critical reading skills will be beneficial for both of FI and FD students.

Writing is a long process; therefore, students need to do some steps to write, beginning from the considerations of choosing a good topic till writing a final copy, includedto review and to revise again and again, from time to time. Peer and self editing strategies are social and metacognitive strategies used in the steps of sharing, revising, and editing in writing. The aim of writing this article is to see how peer and self editing strategies are able to improve students’ writing skill. Classroom action research design was used and 64 students were taken as subjects of the research. The instruments used were peer editing worksheet, self editing worksheet, and test sheet. Data analysis method used was based on the procedures of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting phases. The research results showed that there were improvementsin all elements of writing: the quality of format, punctuation and mechanics, content, organization, and grammar and sentence structure.Based on the research results shown and the criteria of success determined, it can be concluded that peer and self editing strategies are able to improve students’ writing skill.

The objective of this study was to improve students’ skill in writing descriptive text utilizing Four Square Writing Method (FSWM). Thirty students of Junior High School participated in this classroom action research which took place in two cycles. Two sorts of instruments were used in this study; observation sheet and writing test. While the first was utilized to obtain the data on students’ responses and behavior, the latter was to achieve the data on students’ writing improvement. The implementation of the method in the first cycle was able to increase students’ mean score from 48.82 to 66.05. In the second cycle, more than 70% of the students successfully reached the score greater or equal to 72.95. This shows that the FSWM is one of alternative techniques in teaching descriptive text.

This study aims at examining the profile of the students’ English proficiency in the Department of English, Universitas Negeri Malang (UM). A number of 277 students across admission classes: 2016, 2015, 2014, and 2013 were involved in the study. Their proficiency was measured using a paper-and-pencil TOEFL-like test. The subtests reliability was assured. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The results show no respondent reached the advanced level; the majority was in the low intermediate level. The respondents’ score was not linear with their year of admission classes. However, a linearly increasing average score was observed from the scores of Classes of 2015, 2014, and 2013 respectively. Statistical differences in the mean scores of the students across admission classes were observed. Particularly, the mean score of Class of 2016 differed from those of Classes of 2015, 2014, and 2013. Similarly, the mean score of Class of 2013 differed statistically from that of Classes of 2016, 2015, and 2014. However, the mean score of Classes of 2014 and 2015 did not differ statistically. Statistically the mean scores of Classes of 2014 and 2013 in the first semester and those of Classes of 2014 and 2013 in their fifth and seventh semester differed. Next, no evidence of statistical differences was observed in the mean score of the students across different study programs in their seventh semester. Finally, none of Class of 2013 exactly met the graduate profile. However, those beyond the profile and those below the profile were marginally comparable. These findings were further discussed.

The role of grammar instruction is inevitably important for second and/or foreign language mastery. Unfortunately, in practice, many English teachers in foreign language contexts such as in Indonesia still teach grammar deductively; that is, learners are provided the grammar rules and examples, are told to memorize them, and then are asked to apply the rules to other examples. This particular method of teaching is believed to produce learners who cannot use the language communicatively although they have considerable knowledge of grammar rules. It has also been seen as contributing to learners’ passive participation and negative feelings towards grammar learning. The aims of this paper are to give an alternative solution to that problem by offering some ideas of game-based activities and to investigate students’ perception of the implementation of communicative game-based grammar learning. Using pre- and post-study questionnaire, the research study was conducted with 30 adult EFL learners taking an after-class English course. The findings indicated that these activities were effective in creating a non-threatening and more relaxing grammar classes, changing students’ negative perception of grammar learning and improving their perceived communicative skills.

This research aims at developing language games to teach speaking for the students joining English Study club as extra-curricular program at one of the State Islamic Senior High Schools in Gresik, Indonesia. It tries to develop the suitable speaking games and to investigate the students‘ responses toward the developed games. This research and development (R&D) is conducted by adapting Thiagarajan‘s (1974) model called 4D which consists of Defining, Designing, Developing, and Disseminating. The data were gained through interview and questionnaire, and observation checklist. The interview is conducted to study the frontend, specifying instructional objectives, and learner analysis. The questionnaire is employed to do task-concept analysis, to get the students‘ responses, and to submit the experts‘ appraisal. Meanwhile, the checklist is used to conduct development testing. Finally, the product of the study is in the form of a handbook entitled ―A Library of Games‖ which comprises 3 units and 50 kinds of games for teaching speaking skill. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between anxiety and scholastic achievement among students of English department at the faculty of Arts and Humanities of Meknes, Morocco. This study focuses on the level of anxiety among English department students and how they can reduce anxiety inside and outside the classroom in a foreign language speaking environment without instructors‟ intervention. This quantitative research used two instruments; Cattle‟s anxiety questionnaire to test the level of anxiety and achievement test to measure their scholastic achievement. The results revealed that girls are more anxious than boys, boys achieve higher marks in scholastic achievement, and there is no relationship between anxiety and scholastic achievement. Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) is quite essential to improve EFL learners’ speaking ability. It can be done successfully by means of the basic concept of TPRS known as comprehensible input in second language acquisition (SLA). This paper presents a study on learners’ speaking ability through TPRS making use of three important steps; Showing, Telling, and Reading. This is a quantitative study using quasi-experimental as the two intact groups are used; experimental and control group. The data are obtained from pre-test, post-test and questionnaires viewed from both students’ and teachers’ perspective. The data from pre-test and post-test are analyzed by using independent sample t-test . The experimental and control are ascertained to be homogenous in term of English performance from the pre-test analysis. The post-test are carried out from both groups after the treatment and the the result of the test are compared in order to prove if the null hypothesis is rejected indicating that there is significant difference performance between the two groups. The result of the study is expected to be beneficial for English teachers, EFL learners, and further researchers. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible sources of reading anxiety experienced by Turkish EFL learners. The participants of the study were 50 first year university students studying at the English Language Teaching program of a public university in Turkey. The study employed the explanatory sequential mixed methods design. First, the quantitative data were collected through Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS), and then the qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews for the purpose of better understanding quantitative data findings. For analyzing the quantitative data, each participant’s mean score from FLRAS was computed. As for the qualitative data, the transcribed interviews were analyzed using the constant comparison method, for which the researcher identified the recurring themes through coding, prioritizing and connecting the pieces of data. Results indicated that the participants of the study, in general, experience a moderate level of FL reading anxiety. The following three main categories of FL reading anxiety sources were identified with their ten sub-categories: (1) personal factors (inappropriate reading strategy use, lack of self-confidence, high expectations), (2) features of the reading text (topic familiarity, unknown vocabulary, complex reading structure, text length, figurative language), and (3) reading course (compulsory reading, exam). This research and development (R&D) aimed at 1) developing reading material for the fifth grade students of elementary schools in tourism area, and (2) investigating the quality of the material developed. To gather the data, this study used scoring rubric, questionnaires, observation sheets, interview guide, and test. This study used the development model proposed by Sugiyono (2011) and was developed based on the characteristics of good reading material proposed by Tomlinson (1998). The results showed that (1) reading material was developed by involving some of local contents and (2) reading material had high validity and practicality and was proven to be effective. It then can be concluded that to make good quality of a reading material, the development of it should involve local content and should be based on the criteria of good material. The study is aimed at developing the Idea Listing Technique (ILT) to enhance the students‟ writing ability. The Classroom Action Research was applied in this study. The subjects of the study were 31 students, the students taking the course of Writing II, of the third semester of English Department of one State Islamic College at Palangka Raya, Indonesia, in the 2012/2013 academic year. The findings show that the implementation of ILT can enhance the students‟ ability in writing expository paragraph. It is indicated by the enhancements of the percentage of the students achieving the score greater than or equal to C (60-69), and of the percentage of their involvement in the writing activities during the implementation of ILT in Cycle I and II. Thus, the enhancement of the students‟ ability in writing expository paragraph can be reached but it should follow the appropriate procedures of the implementation of ILT having been developed. This study is aimed to know the grammatical errors found in the articles’ abstracts of scholarly journals published by one of Indonesian Islamic State Colleges in 2008-2010. The theory used to analyze the data in this case study is Burt and Kiparsky’s theory, namely Surface Strategy Taxonomy. This theory devides errors into errors of omission, errors of addition, errors of misformation and errors of misordering. This results of the study show that there are 172 items of grammatical errors. The most frequent type of grammatical error is omission with the total number is 72 items or 41.9%. The second is errors of misformation which consist of 57 items or 33.1%. The next is errors of addition (27 items or 15.7%) and finally is errors of misordering as the least number of errors with 16 items or 9.3%. This study analyzes the written discourse which contains social relation in Tempo newspaper on The World Statesman Award through multidisciplinary Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by van Dijk (1998). It concerns with how the discourse of the news has particular purpose in relation to the readers. Employing the theory, this study aims to answer two main questions: (1) What are the social relations of the language use in online Tempo news related to World Statesman Award to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from Appeal of Conscience Foundation2013? (2) How are the social relations of the language use in online Tempo newspaper to World Statesman Award from Appeal of Conscience Foundation 2013? The data analysis covers first, analysis on the context of news followed by drawing semantic macrostructure. Then, identifying the local meaning of the text as well as the social relation is done. The findings show that the social relations reflected in the social cognition of the news cover the knowledge of shared belief, attitude, or shared opinion, and ideology in both shared knowledge and attitude. The purpose of this study is to develop the stories as the learning sources for teaching character at English lesson. This research was conducted by using research and developmental design (R & D) because the goal is to develop a product, i.e. the translated stories of Prophets. By developing the adapted model of Borg and Gall (1983), some procedures had been carried out. The product of the research is a book consisting of the translated stories of Prophet which were reviewed by experts in terms of its plot, content, language and design. In short, through this story book of Prophets, students and readers can learn the virtuous – worthy character – of Prophets as the good model for them. Besides, they can also learn English Language, especially in increasing their vocabulary in English. The suggestion given to the product of research was related to quantity of Prophet stories. Since this book just contains the story of the outstanding Prophets, it was suggested to cover all the Prophet stories for the next study. This study is aimed to find out the types of errors made by the presenters of thesis proposal seminar based on Communicative Effect Taxonomy and to find out whether or not global errors of Communicative Effect Taxonomy made by the presenters of thesis proposal seminar significantly hinder communication between the presenters and the audiences. This study used qualitative approach since the data of this study was taken from 4 students’ presentations which were in the form of words rather than number and statistic. This study revealed that there were 188 errors committed by the students in which 179 and 9 erroneous utterances fall under local error and global error respectively. The local errors consist of 45 lexical errors, 93 morphological errors, and 41 syntactical errors. The global errors consist of 2 wrong order of major constituents, 1 missing, wrong, or misplaced sentence connectors, 1 missing, wrong, or misplaced sentence connectors, and 5 uncategorized global errors. As for the effect of global error to the audience, the writer found out that the global errors did not significantly hinder communication to the audience. The importance of blended learning has been emphasised during the current restriction caused by the coronavirus diseases 2019 (COVID-19). But there is a scarcity of studies on students’ learning experience in blended learning, particularly using WhatsApp as one of the learning tools. A combination of classroom meetings and online learning is implemented in a vocational university in Indonesia. The research reported in this article aims to examine students’ perceptions of their learning experience in a blended method of learning incorporating social media WhatsApp and Google Classroom application as learning instruments. The dataset includes a questionnaire consisting of a four-point Likert scale and open-ended questions, a recording of WhatsApp chat history, and students' work in Google Classroom. Data analysis uses a multi-methods approach. Descriptive analysis is used for the closed-ended questions using the Excel program and content analysis for the open-ended questions. Results show that students positively perceive their learning experience in blended learning. Students also articulate their concerns of the internet connection and instruction clarity on the online learning materials. This paper highlights some implications of the research findings including the lecturer's need for professional development that may enable them to help students succeed in blended learning.

This study aims to explore how English as a Second Language ESL Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) employ adaptation strategies in response to the surrounding constraining context to develop their professional identities. The research question is “How do pre-service teachers (PSTs) employ adaptation strategies to develop their professional identity (PI) during their simulated teaching class and practicum?”. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews and classroom observation from PSTs in a Malaysian university and public secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur. Findings showed that the positive notions of belonging to a Community of Practice (CoP) proved to be applicable in the simulated teaching class context, so PSTs used their adaptation process of observation-experimentation and evaluation to attempt different teaching practices. Nonetheless, the positive notions of the CoP were inapplicable in the teaching practicum context. Hence, PSTs struggled to construct their Professional Identity (PI) and had to alter their adaptation strategies to negotiate PI construction. The study concludes with some recommendations for further use. Program designers need to consider social interaction and integration within the professional context. That could enable adaptation processes to enhance PSTs’ PI development.

This current research forms part of a broader investigation into the problems Saudi postgraduate students face in English academic writing. The study used the interpretive paradigm to investigate and interpret the perceptions of Saudi postgraduate students and their supervisors in relation to the difficulties they encountered regarding academic writing in English. Therefore, the study adopted a sequential mixed-methods design. The quantitative phase of the research employed a questionnaire whereas the qualitative phase employed semi-structured interviews and document analysis. In total, 275 students completed the prepared questionnaire whilst 15 students, both male and female, and 9 supervisors participated in the semi-structured interviews. The research also used ten samples of written feedback students had received from their supervisors. SPSS descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data quantitatively, and MAXQDA software was used to analyse the data qualitatively. The study identified that Saudi postgraduates encounter a range of difficulties in their academic writing, which were due to several underlying causes. Therefore, to address this issue and to contribute to knowledge in the field, the author of this study devised a theoretical model to assist Saudi postgraduate students overcome their difficulties with English academic writing. The main focus of the current study is to explain this model in detail.

This paper aims at demonstrating the effectiveness of modern methods of formation of English language communicative competence of those students who study at non-language specialties. The experimental work was carried out at the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology, the Faculty of Physical Education and the Faculty of History of Ternopil National Pedagogical University named after Volodymyr Hnatyuk, Ukraine. The authors present their experience of conducting a three-year-long training using game technology, project-based technology, interactive technologies, tasks in the electronic system Moodle, etc. and discuss the benefits of using those means at university. The core question of the given study is whether these means are effective in the formation of students’ foreign language communicative competence. The authors demonstrate the benefits of studying with the help of modern lingua-didactic and technical means. The results of the survey indicate that these tools are effective in their integrated application for the formation of English language skills. To conclude, the findings of the study can be applied while teaching English to the students of non-language specialties.

In March 2020, schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were suspended. Online learning became a substitute for traditional face-to-face learning. This study addresses the implications of this shift for the attitudes of university-level English majored Saudi students taking a listening and speaking course. The study investigated the students’ attitudes towards: a) the importance of speaking in English; b) teachers use of emails to communicate their feedback on students’ English-speaking tasks; c) online teaching of English speaking; and d) online learning and teaching of the English language. The data collection tool was a 21-item questionnaire. The participants were 18 second-year male Saudi students who were studying English at a Saudi university. The findings showed that the participants: a) had positive attitudes towards the importance of speaking English; b) appreciated the benefits that online learning offers, but felt it could not replace face-to-face learning.

Teacher feedback is useful information for EFL students’ improvement. It assists students to know their weaknesses and strengths in English learning. However, students might perceive teacher feedback differently from the teacher's intentions. This study examined students’ perceptions of their teacher feedback in English class and investigated their self-regulated learning after receiving feedback. It is a descriptive-qualitative study involving ten EFL students of the senior high school using semi-structured interview questions through online communication. Subsequently, the data were transcribed and analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis of students’ perceptions of teacher feedback and their self-regulated learning. The finding showed that the students perceived teacher feedback as positive and negative. Upon receiving teacher feedback, the students developed their self-regulated learning, such as setting goals, monitoring, self-motivating, seeking-help, adopting, and self-evaluating in English learning. This study offers implications for English teachers and educators to improve their feedback quality in English classroom assessment.

Despite the availability of many technological resources in academic settings and their determinant effect in the improvement of teaching and learning, it seems that teachers rarely used them. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of psychological variables on teachers` attitudes regarding technology use. In this research, most applicable models like the 'technology acceptance model', 'theory of reasoned action', and 'innovation diffusion theory' are used as the foundation for developing a conceptual framework. Variables such as 'perceived usefulness', 'perceived ease of use', 'trialability', 'subjective norms', and 'attitude' are recaptured from these models. The participants of the present research are high school English language teachers in Shiraz. The researcher uses stratified sampling to identify a representative sample from the population. The present study is administered by using five questionnaires to assess variables. The data are analyzed by means of path analysis. According to the obtained result, perceived ease of use is found to be affected by subjective norms and trialability, which in turn influenced the attitude of teachers toward using technology in their teachings. The results propose that the most influential factor on attitude is trialability (β= 0.38). On the other hand, perceived usefulness has a significant, influential effect on attitude. Subjective norms has an indirect but important effect on attitude.
