The Biomedical Photographic Communications Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology currently offers the only university-based degree programme in this field in the United States. With an enrolment of more than eighty students, the curriculum and its delivery are continually challenged by the 'new world' of imaging and the needs of the increasingly diversified industry where its graduates are finding employment. This paper reports on a recent self-study of the programme and examines the future directions for educating tomorrow's information imaging professionals. This paper illustrates the intersection of the Civil Rights Movement in Rochester, NY with Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam. Drawing on newspapers, organizational records, and oral history interviews, I develop a community study that examines Malcolm X's relationship to this small northern city, prior to its 1964 'race riot.' I argue three points: 1) Rochester had a significant impact on Malcolm's evolving philosophy as it related to black unity; 2) national tensions between the Nation of Islam and civil rights organizations, while seen as irreconcilable in the dominant literature, were not necessarily reproduced at the local level; 3) the study of the black movement in smaller cities like Rochester tells a different story, and in so doing reshapes and transforms the larger national narratives. The Rochester case provides a more nuanced telling of Malcolm's life and labors throughout the Sixties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1996 the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, New York, began a major curricular reform called the Double Helix Curriculum, integrating basic science and clinical training over 4 years of medical school. This transition provided a unique opportunity to develop and implement a fully integrated, comprehensive palliative care curriculum. In this three-part paper, we will describe: (1) our process of finding curricular time, setting priorities, and deciding on pedagogical strategies; (2) an overview of how palliative care teaching was integrated into the general curriculum, including examples of different teaching opportunities; and (3) our evaluation process, and some ongoing challenges. Because palliative care is a core element in the care of all seriously ill patients, we chose to integrate our teaching into multiple courses over 4 years of undergraduate medical education, and not isolate it in a particular course. We view this report not as an ideal curriculum to be emulated in its entirety but as a work in progress that may be somewhat unique to our institution. We intend to illustrate a process of incremental curriculum building, and to generate some fresh teaching ideas from which palliative care educators can select depending on their own curricular needs and objectives. Abstract: The precision and accuracy of two Kodak Ektachem DT-60 portable blood analyzers were assessed in a model (research) cholesterol screening program in Rochester, New York. Between June and October 1987, a total of 8,573 people underwent a cholesterol screening held in a movable trailer. A wide variety of temperature, humidity, and other potentially adverse conditions were encountered during the screening period. Between-run coefficients of variation ranged from 1.9 percent to 4.8 percent per month; average bias compared to a Reference Laboratory method ranged between +0.2 percent and +2.0 percent. Both precision and accuracy met currently recommended standards for cholesterol testing in the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
