As the composite pile, the precast concrete piles reinforced with cement-treated soil (PCCS) is formed by driving the precast cement (PC) pile into the deep mixing (DM) column, which has been successfully and widely utilized to support buildings and embankments over soft soil. To increase the pile spacing and give full play to the economic merits of the PCCS, a reinforcement scheme, which involves the combined use of rigid piles and flexible columns, employing penetrated PCCSs and floating DM columns is proposed and utilized for soft soil ground treatment. However, there is a lack of feasible method for consolidation behaviors of this combined composite foundation (CCF) reinforced with penetrated PCCSs and floating DM columns under flexible loads. This paper developed an analytical solution to predict the average consolidation degree of this CCF based on a cylinder consolidation model and double-layer ground consolidation theory. The excess pore pressure and average consolidation degree were calculated by considering the composite pile penetration into the cushion. The analytical method agrees well with results obtained by numerical analysis. Additionally, a parametric study was conducted systematically to analyze the effect of key influence factors on the average consolidation degree of this CCF. The results indicate that the consolidation rate of this CCF can be much faster than that of the natural ground. The consolidation rate strongly depends on the compressive modulus and area replacement ratio of PCCSs. The increasing inner core-outer core modulus ratio and the inner core-subsoil modulus ratio increase the consolidation rate of this CCF. Collision on reinforced concrete (RC) piers by moving vessels or vehicles is a significant issue. This paper presents the static and impact behavior of RC piers with different hollow ratios. Three specimens were statically tested to obtain the load-displacement response. Low-velocity collision on eleven RC piers was conducted under the same velocity of 2.42 m/s. The damage process, failure mode, and force response were comprehensively analyzed. The experimental results indicate that the hollow ratio plays a significant role in the failure mode and ultimate load of RC piers under static and impact loadings. For RC piers with a hollow ratio of 0 and 0.4, the global failure dominated the damage process. However, failure of piers with a hollow ratio of 0.6 was governed by the local damage near the loading point. The static load capacities of the RC piers with a hollow ratio of 0.4 and 0.6 were 1.27% and 60.5% smaller than that of the solid pier, respectively. RC piers with a higher hollow ratio or lighter drop weight suffer smaller peak impact force. The increase of the longitudinal reinforcements leads to a promotion of the peak and mean impact force. Reinforced concrete structures under cyclic exposure to the corrosive environment such as the tidal zone as a part of marine structure entail the higher risk of steel corrosion. In this paper, chloride penetration in concrete exposed to the tidal zone was predicted using a combined moisture and chloride transport model. For the analysis of moisture transport, pore size distribution in concrete was determined from the experimental observation and used to determine the moisture permeability and degree of saturation. Then, the chloride profile through nonsaturated concrete cover was calculated by applying the moisture distribution along the penetration depth to the chloride convection and diffusion model. To assess sensitivity of the service life to the environment and concrete mix conditions, this study used three types of tide levels and water to cement ratios in the simulation. Under 10 years of tidal exposure condition, the minimum required cover depth at which the threshold chloride concentration reaches on the steel embedment increases only about 1.13 times as the tide level increases from the minimum to the highest while that for the w/c ratio increases about 1.69 times. This paper presents the numerical analysis of prestressed reinforced concrete (PRC) beams strengthened with near-surface mounted (NSM) carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). ABAQUS finite element software was used to simulate the existing test beams to investigate the flexural behaviors of PRC beams strengthened with NSM CFRP strips. The finite element model of beams strengthened with NSM CFRP strips was established. The finite element calculation results were compared with the experimental results to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the model. Based on this model, the influences of concrete strength grade and amount of CFRP strips on the flexural behaviors of directly strengthened beams and the cycle numbers and overload amplitude on the flexural behaviors of damaged strengthened beam were further analyzed, and the load-carrying capacity calculation formula of PRC beam strengthened with NSM CFRP strips was established. The results showed that the simulation results and the theoretical calculation were consistent with the test results. With the increase of concrete strength grade and amount of CFRP strips, the ultimate load of directly strengthened beams increased significantly, with a maximum increase of 21.3% and 23.0%, respectively. When the concrete strength grade exceeded C50, the improvement of the ultimate load was limited. When the overload amplitude was less than 60% of the ultimate load, the cycle numbers (within 500 times) had little effect on the yield load, ultimate load, and deformation. When the overload amplitude was higher than 60% of the ultimate load, the deformation increased, and the ultimate load decreased with the increase of the cycle numbers. When a concrete structure is subjected to an impact, the material is subjected to high triaxial compressive stresses. Furthermore, the water saturation ratio in massive concrete structures may reach nearly 100% at the core, whereas the material dries quickly on the skin. The impact response of a massive concrete wall may thus depend on the state of water saturation in the material. This paper presents some triaxial tests performed at a maximum confining pressure of 600 MPa on concrete representative of a nuclear power plant containment building. Experimental results show the concrete constitutive behavior and its dependence on the water saturation ratio. It is observed that as the degree of saturation increases, a decrease in the volumetric strains as well as in the shear strength is observed. The coupled PRM constitutive model does not accurately reproduce the response of concrete specimens observed during the test. The differences between experimental and numerical results can be explained by both the influence of the saturation state of concrete and the effect of deviatoric stresses, which are not accurately taken into account. Stone column is often employed for strengthening of an embankment seated on deep sot clay. But in very sot clay having undrained shear strength less than or equal to 15 kPa, stone column may not derive adequate load carrying capacity and undergo large lateral deformation due to inadequate lateral confinement. In such circumstances, reinforcement to individual stone column by geosynthetics enhances load carrying capacity and reduces lateral deformation. This paper addresses parametric study on behaviour of embankment resting on Geosynthetic Reinforced Stone Column (GRSC) considering parameters such as stone column spacing to diameter ratio, deformation modulus of stone column material, geosynthetic stiffness, thickness of sot clay, and height of embankment by 3D numerical analysis. Finally, equation for Settlement Improvement Factor (SIF), defined as ratio between settlement of embankment without treatment and with geosynthetic reinforced stone column, is proposed that correlates with the major influence parameters such as stone column spacing to diameter ratio, deformation modulus of sot clay, and geosynthetic stiffness. The main distinction of blast load from other types of dynamic loadings is its impulsive nature, where the loads usually act for a very short duration but transmit very high impulsive pressures. This paper presents an overview of the present retrofitting techniques in use to enhance the capacity of structural elements to withstand the effects of blast loads, and introduces an alternative retrofitting approach by utilizing polymer coatings. The authors have demonstrated the positive effects of this approach by conducting a numerical investigation on the behavior of an unretrofitted reinforced concrete panel subjected to the blast load from a 2 kg charge at 1.6 m stand-off distance, and subsequently comparing its performance with several polymer coated panels. The analysis was performed by using an explicit nonlinear finite element (FE) code. The results demonstrate the contributions of this technique in terms of panel displacement control and energy dissipation. Considering that the polymer coating can also act as a protective layer in improving the durability of structural materials, this technique can also be optimized favorably to enhance the overall sustainability of structures. The objective of this study is to examine the performance of the shallow reinforced concrete foundation of a large-scale wind turbine under the influence of environmental loads. A 2 MW horizontal-axis onshore wind turbine supported by a shallow concrete foundation was considered. The foundation stresses, foundation settlements, and static and dynamic contact pressures at various positions of the shallow foundation were monitored from the construction phase to the operation phase in the field. Numerical simulations were also performed to further analyze the behavior of the wind turbine foundation in different cases. The results demonstrate that the responses of the reinforced concrete foundation, i.e., foundation stresses, contact pressures, and foundation settlements, were variables closely related to the wind direction and wind speed. The distribution of foundation stresses suggested that a reasonable design of steel reinforcement cages around the foundation steel ring is important. The dynamic contact pressure of the foundation could reach 5 kPa, so the influence of dynamic wind loads on the foundation response could not be always neglected, particularly for the foundations seated on weak soils. The foundation settlement during the operation phase could be characterized by the logistic model, but its distribution was uneven due to the presence of eccentric upper weight and wind load. Concrete is a heterogeneous composite consisting of aggregate, cement paste, and void. Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been widely studied experimentally and numerically in recent decades. The fibre geometry model program generated by a secondary development ANSYS program was exported to midas FEA for analysis. The constitutive concrete model adopts the total strain crack model of concrete. A steel fibre bond slip is considered in an equivalent manner using the von Mises model. The results of the three-dimensional meso-scale numerical analysis method agree well with the experimental values of steel fibre concrete beams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concrete box-girder bridges are widely used in China. During several routine inspections of two-year-old highway bridges of this type in the China Central Plains region, we found that transverse cracks are widespread on the bottom flanges of those box girders, mainly distributed in the area of 1/4L to 3/4L of the span. Selected cracks were then monitored continuously for one year. Our results showed that there had been no change in the widths of the cracks, but their lengths had increased and new cracks had formed. Taking into consideration factors like hydration reaction, relative humidity difference, shrinkage and creep, sunlight thermal differential effect, sudden temperature change, vehicle load, and their combined efforts, we have developed spatial structural models and conducted stress analyses on the reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete box-girder bridges, respectively. Our numerical analysis results indicated that the hydration reaction is the main reason for the initial bottom flange crack and the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the box girders caused the crack developments at the later stage.
