Background: Incorporating professional development into undergraduate psychology coursework is an ongoing area of improvement for educators. Objective: We present a novel activity encouraging students to explore various professional skills and roles for which their psychology major prepares them through application to real-world issues. Method: Students participated in one of two virtual mental health summits and formed working groups to present from different perspectives (e.g., public health, epidemiology, etc.). Students collectively voted on resolutions at the end of each summit (e.g., budgetary recommendations for a county health department). Results: We examined student perceptions of confidence in their professional skills and content knowledge before and after summits. Students indicated that they wanted more applied assignments like the mental health summit in other psychology classes and preferred the activity to exams or papers in a virtual course. Teaching Implications: The mental health summit represented a real-world application activity that students indicated wanting in their courses. Recommendations for how to adapt the presented activity for non-clinical psychology courses are discussed. Conclusion: The mental health summit activity supported the real-world application that students desire. Problem-based learning (PBL) relies upon trigger material, often a paper case, to stimulate self-directed enquiry and group discussion. We describe the process of writing a PBL case based upon a patient's narrative account of her experiences of psychiatric illness, and the possible benefits of that collaboration for the patient, as well as for student learning. Real patients are under-utilized in teaching, as are their narratives, and both are believed to be resources worthy of further attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The police have underdeveloped links with mental health and social care services despite daily contact with mentally ill individuals. They struggle with identifying and managing the mentally ill in custody, and consistently express a lack of support from partner agencies. In 2010, our research team developed a mental health screening tool and pathway for use by police custody officers, The Police Mental Health Screening Questionnaire (PolQuest). However, due to the large number of agencies with different organisational goals and responsibilities that deal with mentally disordered offenders, the introduction of a screening tool alone was considered insufficient. Thus, an action learning group comprising key professionals from relevant services in one geographical area was tasked with developing a manual and training materials to support the implementation of PolQuest by frontline staff. This paper reflects upon the key themes that emerged from the experience of action learning as a method for engaging multi-agency staff, operating under different occupational goals and cultures, to develop shared practice-oriented outcomes. Data analysed include the facilitator’s reflective notes, meeting minutes and emails. The action learning process was considered a useful method for engaging multi-agency stakeholders in developing materials to support PolQuest’s implementation in vivo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
