Background: Active surveillance (AS) is increasingly used to monitor patients with lower risk prostate cancer (PCa). The Prostate Cancer Active Lifestyle Study (PALS) was a randomized controlled trial to determine whether weight loss improves obesity biomarkers on the causal pathway to progression in patients with PCa on AS. Methods: Overweight/obese men (body mass index >25 kg/m2) diagnosed with PCa who elected AS were recruited. The intervention was a 6‐month, individually delivered, structured diet and exercise program adapted from the Diabetes Prevention Program with a 7% weight loss goal from baseline. Control participants attended one session reviewing the US Dietary and Physical Activity Guidelines. The primary outcome was change in glucose regulation from baseline to the end of the 6‐month intervention, which was measured by fasting plasma glucose, C‐peptide, insulin, insulin‐like growth factor 1, insulin‐like growth factor binding protein‐3, adiponectin, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance. Results: Among 117 men who were randomized, 100 completed the trial. The mean percentage weight loss was 7.1% and 1.8% in the intervention and control arms, respectively (adjusted between‐group mean difference, −6.0 kg; 95% confidence interval, −8.0, −4.0). Mean percentage changes from baseline for insulin, C‐peptide, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance in the intervention arm were −23%, −16%, and −25%, respectively, compared with +6.9%, +7.5%, and +6.4%, respectively, in the control arm (all p for intervention effects ≤.003). No significant between‐arm differences were detected for the other biomarkers. Conclusions: Overweight/obese men with PCa undergoing AS who participated in a lifestyle‐based weight loss intervention successfully met weight loss goals with this reproducible lifestyle intervention and experienced improvements in glucose‐regulation biomarkers associated with PCa progression. Changes in avian breeding phenology are among the most apparent responses to climate change in free-ranging populations. A key question is whether populations will be able to keep up with the expected rates of environmental change. There is a large body of research on the mechanisms by which avian lay-dates track temperature change and the consequences of (mal)adaptation on population persistence. Often overlooked is the role of males, which can influence the lay-date of their mate through their effect on the prelaying environment. We explore how social plasticity causing male indirect genetic effects can help or hinder population persistence when female genes underpinning lay-date and male genes influencing female's timing of reproduction both respond to climate-mediated selection. We extend quantitative genetic moving optimum models to predict the consequences of social plasticity on the maximum sustainable rate of temperature change, and evaluate our model using a combination of simulated data and empirical estimates from the literature. Our results suggest that predictions for population persistence may be biased if indirect genetic effects and cross-sex genetic correlations are not considered and that the extent of this bias depends on sex differences in how environmental change affects the optimal timing of reproduction. Our model highlights that more empirical work is needed to understand sex-specific effects of environmental change on phenology and the fitness consequences for population dynamics. While we discuss our results exclusively in the context of avian breeding phenology, the approach we take here can be generalized to many different contexts and types of social interaction. Extra-pair paternity (EPP) influences the relatedness between social parents and offspring. Therefore, one might expect the level of EPP to influence levels of paternal investment. Here, we investigated the effect of variation in EPP rates on male contributions to parental care within a phylogenetic framework of up to 271 primarily socially monogamous bird species representing 85 families. We used proportion of male provisioning and occurrence of male incubation and nestbuilding as measures of paternal care. We tested the relationship between EPP rates and different components of paternal care while controlling for various life-history traits, namely lifespan, clutch size, and body mass in a phylogenetic path analysis framework. EPP was significantly negatively associated with the occurrence (i.e. whether males participate or not) of male nestbuilding and incubation, but not with the relative amount (proportion) of nestbuilding or incubation performed by the male. Importantly, the proportion of provisioning and biomass delivery by males was clearly negatively associated with EPP. These analyses thus confirm that the effect of EPP on proportion of provisioning visits by males is similar to proportion of biomass delivery, an often assumed but rarely tested assumption. Analysing only Passerine species provided similar results, although only proportion of provisioning was significantly negatively associated with EPP. This study, therefore, provides the most comprehensive support to date of a negative relationship between EPP and paternal care across species. However, a causal relationship between EPP and paternal care cannot necessarily be concluded. We also identify key methodological improvements for future research within the topic. A recent study on the diving behaviour of European shags (Gulosus aristotelis (L.)) foraging in kelp forests off rocky coasts of Norway suggests surface durations are related only to the duration of the preceding dive, and hence are being used for respiratory recovery. These results contrast with earlier reports concerning shags foraging in highly tidal estuarine waters off the coast of Lundy Island, SW England, where there was a stronger relationship between dive durations and preceding pre‐dive surface durations, suggesting the use of preparatory variation in oxygen loading. These two datasets were collected using different methods, and statistically analysed in quite different ways, so the contrasting results here could be due to different methodologies rather than the ecological differences between the two foraging environments. Here, we re‐analyse the two datasets using similar statistical methods, and we confirm the contrasting results produced by the two datasets. We, therefore, conclude that shag breathing strategies do differ between these two marine environments, presumably reflecting adaptive facultatively plastic responses to differences in predictability of foraging dive durations. Off the Norwegian coast, unpredictable variation in the depth and availability of pelagic prey in complex environments may require more responsive post‐dive respiratory recovery on the surface after each dive. In the more uniform English near‐shore environment, however, pre‐dive preparatory oxygen loading customised to match predictable dive‐to‐dive variation in benthic prey depths and foraging durations, may be more time and energy efficient. The TANGO study (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03446573) demonstrated that switching to dolutegravir/lamivudine (DTG/3TC) was non-inferior to continuing tenofovir alafenamide-based regimens (TBR) through week 144. Retrospective baseline proviral DNA genotypes were performed for 734 participants (post-hoc analysis) to assess the impact of archived, pre-existing drug resistance on 144-week virologic outcomes by last on-treatment viral load (VL) and Snapshot. A total of 320 (86%) participants on DTG/3TC and 318 (85%) on TBR had both proviral genotype data and ≥1 on-treatment post-baseline VL results and were defined as the proviral DNA resistance analysis population. Archived International AIDS Society–USA major nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, protease inhibitor, and integrase strand transfer inhibitor resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) were observed in 42 (7%), 90 (14%), 42 (7%), and 11 (2%) participants, respectively, across both groups; 469 (74%) had no major RAMs at baseline. M184V/I (1%), K65N/R (<1%), and thymidine analogue mutations (2%) were infrequent. Through week 144, >99% of participants on DTG/3TC and 99% on TBR were virologically suppressed (last on-treatment VL <50 copies/mL) regardless of the presence of major RAMs. Results from the sensitivity analysis by Snapshot were consistent with the last available on-treatment VL. Platinum-based NAC followed by cystectomy is standard of care for MIBC, however improvement of response rates is needed. In this phase I/II trial, neoadjuvant gemcitabine-cisplatin-rapamycin combination was used to suppress response to platinum-derived DNA damage by the tumor microenvironment. Although rapamycin successfully suppressed damage response, treatment efficacy did not improve, suggesting the existence of alternative platinum resistance pathways. Introduction: Cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by cystectomy is the standard for muscleinvasive bladder cancer (MIBC), however, NAC confers only a small survival benefit and new strategies are needed to increase its efficacy. Pre-clinical data suggest that in response to DNA damage the tumor microenvironment (TME) adopts a paracrine secretory phenotype dependent on mTOR signaling which may provide an escape mechanism for tumor resistance, thus offering an opportunity to increase NAC effectiveness with mTOR blockade. Patients & Methods: We conducted a phase I/II clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of gemcitabine-cisplatin-rapamycin combination. Grapefruit juice was administered to enhance rapamycin pharmacokinetics by inhibiting intestinal enzymatic degradation. Phase I was a dose determination/safety study followed by a single arm Phase II study of NAC prior to radical cystectomy evaluating pathologic response with a 26% pCR rate target. Results: In phase I, 6 patients enrolled, and the phase 2 dose of 35 mg rapamycin established. Fifteen patients enrolled in phase II; 13 were evaluable. Rapamycin was tolerated without serious adverse events. At the preplanned analysis, the complete response rate (23%) did not meet the prespecified level for continuing and the study was stopped due to futility. With immunohistochemistry, successful suppression of the mTOR signaling pathway in the tumor was achieved while limited mTOR activity was seen in the TME. Conclusion: Adding rapamycin to gemcitabine-cisplatin therapy for patients with MIBC was well tolerated but failed to improve therapeutic efficacy despite evidence of mTOR blockade in tumor cells. Khongso /kʰɔŊ˦so˧/ is an SVO Tibeto-Burman language spoken by between two and three thousand speakers in Paletwa Township, Southern Chin State, Myanmar (Dryer 2008, Wright 2009). The speakers live in 17 villages primarily along the Michaung River (see Figure 1). Khongso is mutually intelligible with Anu, which has a population of 700 and is spoken west of the Khongso area (So-Hartmann 1988, Wright 2009, Lewis, Simons & Fennig 2016). The use of the intramedullary lengthening nail has gained in popularity over the last decade. The reduction in complications associated with the use of external fixators and excellent patient outcomes has resulted in the largest change in management of limb length discrepancy since the concept of distraction osteogenesis was accepted by the Western world in the 1980s. Success following "simple" limb lengthening has led to surgeons extending the indications for the lengthening nail, including different bone segments, lengthening associated with potential joint instability and lengthening combined with acute deformity correction. There has been a drive for further implant modification to reduce complications, and enable full weight bearing during the lengthening process. This would offer the opportunity to consider simultaneous limb lengthening. The aim of this review is to evaluate the literature published over the last five years and highlight important learning points and technical tips for these expanding indications. The goal of limb lengthening is to restore length to bone, safely stretch soft tissues and improve quality of life with minimal complications. Traditionally this was achieved with the use of external fixators, associated with complications related to pin site tethering and infections, joint stiffness and regenerate deformity and fracture following frame removal. The duration of treatment also impacts on patient mental health and well-being. In order to reduce external fixator time, intramedullary nails have been introduced as an adjunct, either at the initial surgery or after completion of lengthening. Complications related to the external fixator still remained and innovation has led to the popularisation of the intramedullary lengthening nail. The lengthening mechanism of the nail can be divided into those with ratchet systems and those driven by motors. In the ratchet group, patients are required to manually rotate their limb, with movement at the osteotomy site, in order to create forward movement. This was often associated with pain, and in some cases led to the requirement of general anaesthesia to enable rotation and continuation of lengthening. Further issues were reported related to lengthening rate control. Once the nail had lengthened sufficiently for the osteotomy to disengage, rapid lengthening termed a 'runaway' nail could occur. The nails were limited to forward movement, and once length was gained it could not be retracted, leading to poor regenerate formation and soft tissue contractures. The introduction of the Fitbone implant utilised a transcutaneous electrical conduit, powered by a high frequency electrical signal, enabling more control over the lengthening. The Precice intramedullary lengthening system is controlled by the use of an external device with two rotating neodymium magnets, which produce rotation of a third magnet in the nail. By altering the direction of the magnet rotation, the lengthening can be controlled both forwards and backwards with sub-millimetre precision. Following initial excellent outcomes published, the use of the lengthening intramedullary nail has become accepted by many as the implant of choice in limb lengthening. The aim of this article comes in two parts. The first to highlight the latest research and clinical results in the last five years using an intramedullary implant during limb lengthening, and the second to report the outcome in extended surgical indications and further implant innovation. Learning is a familiar process to most people, but it currently lacks a fully developed theoretical position within evolutionary biology. Learning (memory and forgetting) involves adjustments in behaviour in response to cumulative sequences of prior experiences or exposures to environmental cues. We therefore suggest that all forms of learning (and some similar biological phenomena in development, aging, acquired immunity and acclimation) can usefully be viewed as special cases of phenotypic plasticity, and formally modelled by expanding the concept of reaction norms to include additional environmental dimensions quantifying sequences of cumulative experience (learning) and the time delays between events (forgetting). Memory therefore represents just one of a number of different internal neurological, physiological, hormonal and anatomical 'states' that mediate the carry‐over effects of cumulative environmental experiences on phenotypes across different time periods. The mathematical and graphical conceptualisation of learning as plasticity within a reaction norm framework can easily accommodate a range of different ecological scenarios, closely linking statistical estimates with biological processes. Learning and non‐learning plasticity interact whenever cumulative prior experience causes a modification in the reaction norm (a) elevation [mean phenotype], (b) slope [responsiveness], (c) environmental estimate error [informational memory] and/or (d) phenotypic precision [skill acquisition]. Innovation and learning new contingencies in novel (laboratory) environments can also be accommodated within this approach. A common reaction norm approach should thus encourage productive cross‐fertilisation of ideas between traditional studies of learning and phenotypic plasticity. As an example, we model the evolution of plasticity with and without learning under different levels of environmental estimation error to show how learning works as a specific adaptation promoting phenotypic plasticity in temporally autocorrelated environments. Our reaction norm framework for learning and analogous biological processes provides a conceptual and mathematical structure aimed at usefully stimulating future theoretical and empirical investigations into the evolution of plasticity across a wider range of ecological contexts, while providing new interdisciplinary connections regarding learning mechanisms. Torpor is a well-known energy conservation strategy in many mammal and bird species. It is often employed when environmental conditions are unfavourable to maximize survival probabilities. However, torpor often carries with it the physiological costs of a low body temperature and of rewarming in addition to potential missed opportunities for foraging. Therefore, we hypothesised that decision making regarding when to use torpor should reflect the most important environmental conditions for species distributions, and thus how they may be impacted by ongoing climate change. We investigated how weather conditions affect nightly torpor patterns in the nocturnal insectivorous Australian eastern long-eared bat (Nyctophilus bifax). By measuring the skin temperature of 37 free-ranging individuals, we confirmed that torpor was used more frequently during the winter and at subtropical compared to tropical locations. Using mixed-effect models we show that lower ambient temperatures were the main driver of individual torpor use, probably due to lower roost temperatures and prey availability. However, increased rain, wind and humidity, and decreasing barometric pressure, as well as brighter moonlight, also led to more time spent torpid per night. We suggest that bats evaluate multiple environmental cues to make decisions regarding torpor use versus active foraging based upon their expectations of the energetic benefits, prey availability and relative predation risk. Interactions between some of these effects and body mass (whilst controlling for forearm length) indicate that individual variation in body size and/or state-dependent effects of energy reserves also partly determined the use of nightly torpor in these bats. Animals are predicted to adjust their behaviour in relation to their bodily energetic state. Adjustment can be driven by either positive feedbacks (e.g. increased risk‐taking with higher energetic status; "state‐dependent safety") or negative feedbacks (e.g. reduced risk‐taking with higher status; "asset protection"). This study investigated effects of food restriction and subsequent refeeding on boldness‐like behaviour in three‐spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and nine‐spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius). The same experimental design was run in 2 consecutive years, using a start‐box emergence test to score behaviour, aiming for an exact replication in the second year. Results indicate that the results from the original and the replicated experiment did not match. Both years there was support for treatment effects, but the effects were qualitatively and quantitatively different. In 2012, the fish on a continuous high ration had longer emergence times than restricted‐refed fish (suggesting asset protection as the feedback mechanism), while in 2013, this pattern is reversed (suggesting state‐dependent safety as the feedback mechanism). In 2013, the general emergence time was also generally shorter than in 2012. These effects suggest that the methodology used may not be particularly robust. Subject fish were wild‐caught, and differences in the populations across years, or in the individuals' prior experience, may have influenced the results. Alternatively, the start‐box emergence test could be sensitive to minor (unperceived) alterations in procedures. Regardless, the present study suggests that the robustness of the start‐box emergence test, which is a commonly used test (e.g. to score "boldness" in animal personality experiments) needs further investigation. In addition to the behavioural experiment, fish going through the refeeding protocol were shown to have higher body water content than fish on a continuously high food ration in both species. Reversible plasticity in phenotypic traits allows organisms to cope with environmental variation within lifetimes, but costs of plasticity may limit just how well the phenotype matches the environmental optimum. An additional adaptive advantage of plasticity might be to reduce fitness variance, in other words: bet‐hedging to maximize geometric (rather than simply arithmetic) mean fitness. Here, we model the evolution of plasticity in the form of reaction norm slopes, with increasing costs as the slope or degree of plasticity increases. We find that greater investment in plasticity (i.e. a steeper reaction norm slope) is favoured in scenarios promoting bet‐hedging as a response to multiplicative fitness accumulation (i.e. coarser environmental grains and fewer time steps prior to reproduction), because plasticity lowers fitness variance across environmental conditions. In contrast, in scenarios with finer environmental grain and many time steps prior to reproduction, bet‐hedging plays less of a role and individual‐level optimization favours evolution of shallower reaction norm slopes. However, the opposite pattern holds if plasticity costs themselves result in increased fitness variation, as might be the case for production costs of plasticity that depend on how much change is made to the phenotype each time step. We discuss these contrasting predictions from this partitioning of adaptive plasticity into short‐term individual benefits versus long‐term genotypic (bet‐hedging) benefits, and how this approach enhances our understanding of the evolution of optimum levels of plasticity in examples from thermal physiology to advances in avian lay dates. Venezillo arizonicus (Mulaik & Mulaik, 1942) is the only oniscidean isopod native to the Southwest Desert Province of North America. In accordance with its desert habitat, we hypothesized that V. arizonicus would have a higher upper lethal temperature than mesic oniscideans. If oniscidean thermal tolerance is limited by an oxygen consumption-uptake mismatch (physiological hypoxia), as indicated by recent work with other land isopods, we further hypothesized that V. arizonicus would possess highly efficient pleopodal lungs, as defined by its capacity for metabolic regulation in reduced P O 2 . Other adaptations to counter oxygen limitation at high temperatures could include reduced temperature sensitivity of metabolism (low Q 10 ) and an overall reduction in metabolic rate. Thermal tolerance was measured using the progressive method of Cowles & Bogert and the catabolic rate of animals ( V CO 2 ) was measured as a function of temperature and P O 2 . The critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of winter-acclimatized animals was 43.0 ± 0.85°C, 1.6-2.6°C higher than published values for summer-acclimatized mesic oniscideans. The catabolic rate at 25°C was 1.50 ± 0.203 μ l min−1 g−1, markedly lower than values determined for mesic Oniscidea (4-6 μ l min−1 g−1) and was unaffected by hypoxia as low as 2% O2 (ca. 2 kPa). Catabolism was, however, quite sensitive to temperature, showing a mean Q 10 of 2.58 over 25-42°C. The efficient pleopodal lungs and low metabolic rate of V. arizonicus will both tend to mitigate physiological hypoxia, consistent with the species' high CTmax. A low catabolic rate may also be an adaptation to low habitat productivity and seasonally constrained activity patterns. Si la tolérance thermique est limitée par une inadéquation entre consommation et absorption d'oxygène (hypoxie physiologique), comme indiqué par un récent travail sur d'autres isopodes terrestres, nous avons, de plus, émis l'hypothèse que V. arizonicus possèderait des poumons pléopodaux très efficients, comme défini par leur capacité pour la régulation de leur métabolisme sous PO2 réduite. Understanding how environmental variation affects phenotypic evolution requires models based on ecologically realistic assumptions that include variation in population size and specific mechanisms by which environmental fluctuations affect selection. Here we generalize quantitative genetic theory for environmentally induced stochastic selection to include general forms of frequency‐ and density‐dependent selection. We show how the relevant fitness measure under stochastic selection relates to Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection, and present a general class of models in which density regulation acts through total use of resources rather than just population size. In this model, there is a constant adaptive topography for expected evolution, and the function maximized in the long run is the expected factor restricting population growth. This allows us to generalize several previous results and to explain why apparently "K‐selected" species with slow life histories often have low carrying capacities. Our joint analysis of density‐ and frequency‐dependent selection reveals more clearly the relationship between population dynamics and phenotypic evolution, enabling a broader range of eco‐evolutionary analyses of some of the most interesting problems in evolution in the face of environmental variation. Bet‐hedging evolves in fluctuating environments because long‐term genotype success is determined by geometric (rather than arithmetic) mean fitness across generations. Diversifying bet‐hedging produces different specialist offspring, whereas conservative bet‐hedging produces similar generalist offspring. However, many fields, such as behavioral ecology and thermal physiology, typically consider specialist versus generalist strategies only in terms of maximizing arithmetic mean fitness benefits to individuals. Here we model how environmental variability affects optimal amounts of phenotypic variation within and among individuals to maximise genotype fitness, and we disentangle the effects of individual‐level optimization and genotype‐level bet‐hedging by comparing long‐term arithmetic versus geometric mean fitness. For traits with additive fitness effects within lifetimes (e.g. foraging‐related traits), genotypes of similar generalists or diversified specialists perform equally well. However, if fitness effects are multiplicative within lifetimes (e.g. sequential survival probabilities), generalist individuals are always favored. In this case, geometric mean fitness optimization requires even more within‐individual phenotypic variation than does arithmetic mean fitness, causing individuals to be more generalist than required to simply maximize their own expected fitness. In contrast to previous results in the bet‐hedging literature, this generalist conservative bet‐hedging effect is always favored over diversifying bet‐hedging. These results link the evolution of behavioral and ecological specialization with earlier models of bet‐hedging, and we apply our framework to a range of natural phenomena from habitat choice to host specificity in parasites. There has been much recent research interest in the existence of a major axis of life‐history variation along a fast–slow continuum within almost all major taxonomic groups. Eco‐evolutionary models of density‐dependent selection provide a general explanation for such observations of interspecific variation in the "pace of life." One issue, however, is that some large‐bodied long‐lived "slow" species (e.g., trees and large fish) often show an explosive "fast" type of reproduction with many small offspring, and species with "fast" adult life stages can have comparatively "slow" offspring life stages (e.g., mayflies). We attempt to explain such life‐history evolution using the same eco‐evolutionary modeling approach but with two life stages, separating adult reproductive strategies from offspring survival strategies. When the population dynamics in the two life stages are closely linked and affect each other, density‐dependent selection occurs in parallel on both reproduction and survival, producing the usual one‐dimensional fast–slow continuum (e.g., houseflies to blue whales). However, strong density dependence at either the adult reproduction or offspring survival life stage creates quasi‐independent population dynamics, allowing fast‐type reproduction alongside slow‐type survival (e.g., trees and large fish), or the perhaps rarer slow‐type reproduction alongside fast‐type survival (e.g., mayflies—short‐lived adults producing few long‐lived offspring). Therefore, most types of species life histories in nature can potentially be explained via the eco‐evolutionary consequences of density‐dependent selection given the possible separation of demographic effects at different life stages. The ferrierite crystal structure has often been subject to discussion because of the possible lowering of symmetry from the space group Immm. It mainly occurs in nature with a fibrous crystal habit, and because of the existence of line/planar defects in the framework, texture and preferred orientation effects it has been difficult to obtain an exact crystallographic model based only on the results from powder diffraction data. Therefore, nano‐single‐crystal diffraction and tomography data have been combined in order to improve the refinement with a meaningful model. High‐quality single‐crystal data, providing reliable structural information, and tomography images have been used as input for a Rietveld refinement which took into account a phenomenological description of stacking disorder and the analytical description of the preferred orientation, by means of spherical harmonics for strong texture effects. This is one of the first examples of application of synchrotron nano‐diffraction for the structure solution of fibrous minerals of micrometre to nanometre size. The high quality of the crystals allowed collection of single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction data of up to 0.6 Å resolution, leading to an unambiguous solution and precise anisotropic refinement. Nano‐single‐crystal diffraction and phase contrast tomography data were collected at ID11 and the high‐resolution powder diffraction patterns at ID22 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. In order to understand how organisms cope with ongoing changes in environmental variability, it is necessary to consider multiple adaptations to environmental uncertainty on different time scales. Conservative bet-hedging (CBH) represents a long-term genotype-level strategy maximizing lineage geometric mean fitness in stochastic environments by decreasing individual fitness variance, despite also lowering arithmetic mean fitness. Meanwhile, variance-prone (aka risk-prone) strategies produce greater variance in short-term payoffs, because this increases expected arithmetic mean fitness if the relationship between payoffs and fitness is accelerating. Using evolutionary simulation models, we investigate whether selection for such variance-prone strategies is counteracted by selection for bet-hedging that works to adaptively reduce fitness variance. In our model, variance proneness evolves in fine-grained environments (lower correlations among individuals in energetic state and/or payoffs), and with larger numbers of independent decision events over which resources accumulate prior to selection. Conversely, multiplicative fitness accumulation, caused by coarser environmental grain and fewer decision events selection, favours CBH via greater variance aversion. We discuss examples of variance-sensitive strategies in optimal foraging, migration, life histories and cooperative breeding using this bet-hedging perspective. By linking disparate fields of research studying adaptations to variable environments, we should be better able to understand effects of human-induced rapid environmental change. We present a novel perspective on life‐history evolution that combines recent theoretical advances in fluctuating density‐dependent selection with the notion of pace‐of‐life syndromes (POLSs) in behavioural ecology. These ideas posit phenotypic co‐variation in life‐history, physiological, morphological and behavioural traits as a continuum from the highly fecund, short‐lived, bold, aggressive and highly dispersive 'fast' types at one end of the POLS to the less fecund, long‐lived, cautious, shy, plastic and socially responsive 'slow' types at the other. We propose that such variation in life histories and the associated individual differences in behaviour can be explained through their eco‐evolutionary dynamics with population density – a single and ubiquitous selective factor that is present in all biological systems. Contrasting regimes of environmental stochasticity are expected to affect population density in time and space and create differing patterns of fluctuating density‐dependent selection, which generates variation in fast versus slow life histories within and among populations. We therefore predict that a major axis of phenotypic co‐variation in life‐history, physiological, morphological and behavioural traits (i.e. the POLS) should align with these stochastic fluctuations in the multivariate fitness landscape created by variation in density‐dependent selection. Phenotypic plasticity and/or genetic (co‐)variation oriented along this major POLS axis are thus expected to facilitate rapid and adaptively integrated changes in various aspects of life histories within and among populations and/or species. The fluctuating density‐dependent selection POLS framework presented here therefore provides a series of clear testable predictions, the investigation of which should further our fundamental understanding of life‐history evolution and thus our ability to predict natural population dynamics. Understanding how organisms adapt to environmental variation is a key challenge of biology. Central to this are bet‐hedging strategies that maximize geometric mean fitness across generations, either by being conservative or diversifying phenotypes. Theoretical models have identified environmental variation across generations with multiplicative fitness effects as driving the evolution of bet‐hedging. However, behavioral ecology has revealed adaptive responses to additive fitness effects of environmental variation within lifetimes, either through insurance or risk‐sensitive strategies. Here, we explore whether the effects of adaptive insurance interact with the evolution of bet‐hedging by varying the position and skew of both arithmetic and geometric mean fitness functions. We find that insurance causes the optimal phenotype to shift from the peak to down the less steeply decreasing side of the fitness function, and that conservative bet‐hedging produces an additional shift on top of this, which decreases as adaptive phenotypic variation from diversifying bet‐hedging increases. When diversifying bet‐hedging is not an option, environmental canalization to reduce phenotypic variation is almost always favored, except where the tails of the fitness function are steeply convex and produce a novel risk‐sensitive increase in phenotypic variance akin to diversifying bet‐hedging. Anatomical adaptations to high‐salinity environments in mangrove leaves may be recorded in leaf water isotopes. Recent studies observed lower 18O enrichment (ΔL) of leaf water with respect to source water in three mangrove species relative to adjacent freshwater trees, but the factors that govern this phenomenon remain unclear. To resolve this issue, we investigated leaf traits and ΔL in 15 species of true mangrove plants, 14 species of adjacent freshwater trees, and 4 species of semi‐mangrove plants at five study sites along south‐eastern coast of China. Our results confirm that ΔL was generally 3–4‰ lower for mangrove species than for adjacent freshwater or semi‐mangrove species. We hypothesized that higher leaf water content (LWC) and lower leaf stomatal density (LS) both played important roles in reducing ΔL in mangroves relative to nearby freshwater plants. Both differences acted to elongate effective leaf mixing length (L) in mangroves by about 200% and lower stomatal conductance by about 30%. Péclet models based on both LWC and LS could accurately predict ΔL. Our findings highlight the potential species‐specific anatomical determinants of ΔL (or L), which has important implications for the interpretation of environmental information from metabolites produced by leaf water isotopes in palaeoclimate research. Mangrove forests evolve typical leaf structures to adapt to high‐salinity environments, and many of these adaptations may leave imprints in leaf water isotopes. Our comprehensive field study confirmed that the isotope enrichment of leaf water (ΔL) in mangroves were generally lower than those of the adjacent nonmangrove at multiple‐site and multiple‐species scales and that leaf anatomies play key roles in determining these differences in ΔL. The potential species‐specific anatomical determinants of ΔL based on a large pool of species can be incorporated into the leaf water model, which will have considerable potential applications not only for palaeoclimate reconstruction but also in distinguishing what kinds of plants with strong Péclet effect. People with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities may not always be well supported to engage meaningfully in activity at home, an injustice impacting on well‐being and quality of life. Research sought better understanding of how occupational therapists work to improve the quality of this support, in particular, how they encourage support workers and managers to adopt recommendations. A single, purposively selected, case of supporting engagement in activity at home was investigated using a critical ethnographic case study methodology from an interpretivist and social constructionist stance. An occupational therapist worked with five people with severe and profound learning disabilities and their support workers over one year. Data were collected using ethnographic methods (participant observation, interviews and document analysis) and analyzed using an emergent systematic strategy (formal coding and categorization, alongside intuitive and affective analysis) and NVivo qualitative data analysis software. The case's story (illustrated by an ethnographic vignette constructed from the data) highlights challenges encouraging others to follow recommendations as intended. It has two overarching themes: the impact of shifting support and leadership cultures; and characteristics of occupational therapy, seeking in particular to create and sustain cultural change by working with support workers in a collaborative and empowering way. To overcome the impacts of organizational culture on how support is given (thereby improving the quality of lives of people with profound intellectual disabilities) professionals need to collaborate with support workers. Occupational injustices they arguably may face, in particular risk of burnout where their roles are conflicting or ambiguous, may also need to be addressed. Implications are suggested for health and social care professionals working indirectly through support workers of people with profound intellectual disabilities (and others with high support needs) and for the education and training of these professionals. Nowadays, due to the adverse health effects associated with exposure to asbestos, its removal and thermal inertization has become one of the most promising ways for reducing waste risk management. Despite all the advances in structure analysis of fibers and characterization, some problems still remain that are very hard to solve. One challenge is the structure analysis of natural micro- and nano-crystalline samples, which do not form crystals large enough for single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), and their analysis is often hampered by reflection overlap and the coexistence of multiple fibres linked together. In this paper, we have used nano-focused synchrotron X-rays to refine the crystal structure of a micrometric tremolite fibres from Val d'Ala, Turin (Italy) after various heat treatment. The structure of the original fibre and after heating to 800 °C show minor differences, while the fibre that was heated at 1000 #176;C is recrystallized into pyroxene phases and cristobalite. The deformation of polycrystalline zirconium is analysed at the individual grain level using three-dimensional Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction (3D-XRD) in combination with a Crystal Plasticity Finite Element (CPFE) model. The effects of elastic strains and lattice rotations on the shape and position of diffracted peaks are studied in detail. For this purpose, the three dimensional measured microstructure of a commercially pure zirconium (CPZr) sample was imported into a crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) model to simulate the deformation of measured grains. The calculated lattice rotations and strains of the selected most active grains were subsequently used to forward simulate diffracted peaks. The simulated peaks are then compared to the 3D-XRD measured ones. It is shown that although the sample was deformed to 1.2% strain, soft grains exhibit significant peak smearing. Peak broadening is mostly affected by the deformation induced lattice rotation and less affected by the elastic strains. Further, the comparison of CPFE modelling and 3D-XRD results confirms that prism and basal slip are the most active systems and pyramidal is present but only slightly active. A method is developed to determine the activity of possible slip systems. As an example, by comparing the simulated and measured peak positions as well as the rotations of the most affected diffraction peaks, it is shown that pyramidal slip system is not active significantly at room temperature. The threats to aestivating land snails posed by extremely high temperatures and prolonged desiccation are poorly understood. In this study, we used the southern California native snail Helminthoglypta tudiculata to investigate the role of microhabitat selection in avoiding lethally high temperatures during aestivation. We also examined water loss and metabolism during aestivation to understand the potential limits of water and carbon reserves for aestivating snails. In the field, searches were carried out both on the substrate surface (SS) and in subsurface refugia (SR) such as soft substrate, rodent holes or under rocks. All aestivating snails and the great majority of empty shells found in the field were in SR. In the laboratory, the lethal temperature for active snails in a 1-h exposure was 41.3 ± 0.24 °C. Daily temperature highs measured over a 46-d period from September 2014 to November 2014 exceeded 41.3 °C at all 11 SS sites examined, but in only two of eight SR sites. SR aestivation sites provide protection from lethally high temperatures and water loss. Laboratory measurements of water loss rates for aestivating snails under standardized conditions indicated that, in the field, long-term water loss amounts to c. 244 μg H2O h-1. This loss rate is greater than that needed to ensure survival in the wild, suggesting that laboratory investigations of losses need to be regarded with caution. Measured CO2 fluxes in aestivating snails showed alternating periods of negligible flux punctuated by sharp increases, presumably coinciding with opening of the pneumostome, and decreased exponentially throughout aestivation. Water flux did not co-vary significantly with CO2 flux, indicating that the epiphragm maintains near-saturated humidity in the underlying air space. Water loss was proportionally greater than carbon (CO2) loss in long-term dormancy, suggesting that desiccation poses a greater threat than starvation to aestivating snails. Helminthoglypta tudiculata probably spends >50% of the year in aestivation. Maintaining undisturbed ground surface with diverse refugia for aestivating land snails should be given appropriate priority in conservation efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Differential allocation (DA) is the adaptive adjustment of reproductive investment (up or down) according to partner quality. A lack of theoretical treatments has led to some confusion in the interpretation of DA in the empirical literature. We present a formal framework for DA that highlights the nature of reproductive benefits versus costs for females mated to males of different quality. Contrary to popular belief, analytical and stochastic dynamic models both show that additive benefits of male quality on offspring fitness have no effect on optimal levels of female investment and thus cannot produce DA. Instead, if offspring fitness is affected multiplicatively by male quality, or male quality affects the female cost function, DA is expected because of changes in the marginal benefits or costs of extra investment. Additive male quality effects on the female cost function can cause a novel form of weak DA, because reduced costs can slightly favor current over future reproduction. Combinations of these distinct effects in more realistic model scenarios can explain various patterns of positive and negative DA reported for different species and mating systems. Correction of deformity of a bone through use of a hexapod external fixator requires clear definition of the relationship between the bone and the frame. Achieving adequate orthogonal calibrated radiographs for this aim, with minimum X-ray exposure, can prove a challenge in the radiography suite. We describe a simple technique for obtaining adequate imaging, without the use of additional equipment. Introduction: Miserable malalignment syndrome is a complex torsional lower limb deformity with limited consensus on surgical treatment. We present the outcome of de-rotation of the tibia alone using an external fixator. Methods: Fifteen patients (22 segments) were operated on between 2012 and 2020; 13 presented with anterior knee pain, and two presented with out-toeing. Gait analysis was done in nine patients, and CT scan rotational profile, including tibial tubercle–trochlear groove distance, femoral version, and tibial torsion, were calculated. Kujala knee pain score and visual analogue pain score (VAS) were recorded. All underwent infra-tubercular osteotomy of the tibia and midshaft osteotmy of the fibula and application of a hexapod circular frame to gradually internally rotate the tibia until the foot aligned with the patella. Results: There was no preoperative clinical or radiographic evidence for patellar instability, femoral anteversion 30° (21°–54°), and external tibial torsion 50° (37–70). The mean age at surgery was 21 years (12–37) with a mean follow-up of 20 months (9–83). All osteotomies healed, and the frames were removed at a mean of 111 days (80–168). The mean VAS score improved from 8(5–9) to 1(0–4) postoperatively (P < 0.001). The mean Kujala knee pain score increased from 53 (30–75) to 92 (54–100) postoperatively (P < 0.001). The mean preoperative foot progression angle (FPA) was 37° (20°–50°), with 13 postoperatively walking with neutral FPA. One patient walked with symmetrical + 10° and the other with − 5° FPA. All patients reported relief of knee pain and were satisfied with the alignment. Conclusion: Gradual correction of severe external tibia torsion with a hexapod external fixator and an infra-tubercle tibial osteotomy could provide an optimum method to eliminate knee pain and improve limb alignment in miserable malalignment syndrome. The spatially resolved intragranular orientation spread in two representative bulk grains of interstitial-free steel deformed to 9% tension has been investigated. A three-dimensional X-ray diffraction microscopy experiment revealed that the two similarly oriented grains are both embedded in local environments representing the bulk texture, yet their deformation-induced rotations are very different. The ALAMEL model is employed to analyse the grain interaction mechanisms. Predictions of this model qualitatively agree with the directionality and magnitude of the experimental orientation spread. However, quantitative agreement requires fine-tuning of the boundary conditions. The majority of the modelled slip is accounted for by four slip systems also predicted to be active by the classical Taylor model in uniaxial tension, and most of the orientation spread along the grain boundaries is caused by relative variations in the activities of these. Although limited to two grains, the findings prove that shear at the grain boundaries as accounted for by the ALAMEL model is a dominant grain interaction mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To examine the risk factors associated with the odds of extreme Gleason upgrading at radical prostatectomy (RP) (defined as a Gleason prognostic group score increase of ≥2), we utilized a large, population-based cancer registry.Materials and Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiologic, and End Results database was queried (2010-2011) for all patients diagnosed with Gleason 3 + 3 or 3 + 4 on prostate needle biopsy. Available clinicopathologic factors and the odds of upgrading and extreme upgrading at RP were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression.Results: A total of 12,459 patients were identified, with a median age of 61 (interquartile range: 56-65) and a diagnostic prostate-specific antigen (PSA) of 5.5 ng/mL (interquartile range: 4.3-7.5). Upgrading was observed in 34% of men, including 44% of 7402 patients with Gleason 3 + 3 and 19% of 5057 patients with Gleason 3 + 4 disease. Age, clinical stage, diagnostic PSA, and % prostate needle biopsy cores positive were independently associated with odds of any upgrading at RP. In baseline Gleason 3 + 3 disease, extreme upgrading was observed in 6%, with increasing age, diagnostic PSA, and >50% core positivity associated with increased odds. In baseline Gleason 3 + 4 disease, extreme upgrading was observed in 4%, with diagnostic PSA and palpable disease remaining predictive. Positive surgical margins were significantly higher in patients with extreme upgrading at RP (P < .001).Conclusion: Gleason upgrading at RP is common in this large population-based cohort, including extreme upgrading in a clinically significant portion. Background: Identifying the subset of patients with clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa) at the highest risk of recurrence remains challenging, and better prognostic markers are needed. Gleason score is the best predictor of PCa aggressiveness and prognosis. In the present study, we generated an epigenetic signature based on high versus low Gleason score tumors and evaluated its ability to predict recurrence after radical prostatectomy. Methods: Genome-wide DNA methylation data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA; no. of patients = 333) and the elastic net method were used to generate an epigenetic signature by contrasting patients with high (8-10) versus low (=6) Gleason score tumors. The signature was then tested in a cohort of 523 patients with clinically localized disease who had radical prostatectomy. Samples taken from the primary tumor were used for DNA methylation and mRNA expression profiling. Patients were followed for PCa recurrence on average for 8 years after diagnosis. Results: The epigenetic signature includes 52 differentially methylated CpG sites. In the testing cohort, the signature was associated with poorer recurrence-free survival (hazard ratio per 25% increase = 1.78; 95% confidence interval 1.48, 2.16). The signature significantly improved the area under the curve (AUC) for PCa recurrence compared to clinical-pathological parameters alone, particularly among patients diagnosed with Gleason score 7 tumors (0.64 vs. 0.76, P = 1.34E-4). Results were comparable for patients with Gleason 3 + 4 and those with 4 + 3 tumors. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis showed that higher levels of the signature were associated with increased expression of genes related to cell cycle proliferation and decreased expression of androgen-responsive genes. Conclusions: This report shows evidence that DNA methylation patterns measured in prostate tumor cells are predictive of PCa aggressiveness. Developing sensitivity analysis (SA) that reliably and consistently identify sensitive variables can improve building performance design. In global SA, a linear regression model is normally applied to sampled-based solutions by stepwise manners, and the relative importance of variables is examined by sensitivity indexes. However, the robustness of stepwise regression is related to the choice of procedure options, and therefore influence the indication of variables’ sensitivities. This paper investigates the extent to which the procedure options of a stepwise regression for design objectives or constraints can affect variables global sensitivities, determined by three sensitivity indexes. Given that SA and optimization are often conducted in parallel, desiring for a combined method, the paper also investigates SA using both randomly generated samples and the biased solutions obtained from an optimization run. Main contribution is that, for each design objective or constraint, it is better to conclude the categories of variables importance, rather than ordering their sensitivities by a particular index. Importantly, the overall stepwise approach (with the use of bidirectional elimination, BIC, rank transformation and 100 sample size) is robust for global SA: the most important variables are always ranked on the top irrespective of the procedure options. The mechanism of hydration of calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4·0.5H2O) to form gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) was studied by combining scanning 3D X‐ray diffraction (s3DXRD) and phase contrast tomography (PCT) to determine in situ the spatial and crystallographic relationship between these two phases. From s3DXRD measurements, the crystallographic structure, orientation and position of the crystalline grains in the sample during the hydration reaction were obtained, while the PCT reconstructions allowed visualization of the 3D shapes of the crystals during the reaction. This multi‐scale study unfolds structural and morphological evidence of the dissolution–precipitation process of the gypsum plaster system, providing insights into the reactivity of specific crystallographic facets of the hemihydrate. Purpose To establish the predictive value of defined retinal morphologic parameters on visual outcomes and re-treatment needs in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) receiving ranibizumab treatment. Design Post hoc analysis of a prospective, 12-month, multicenter, phase IIIb trial. Participants Three hundred fifty-three treatment-naïve patients with nAMD. Methods Available data from 319 treatment-naïve patients receiving ranibizumab 0.3 mg monthly (frequent regimen; n = 102) or ranibizumab 0.3 or 0.5 mg quarterly (pooled 0.3/0.5 mg = infrequent regimen; n = 217) were analyzed to assess the correlations between baseline retinal morphologic parameters and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) change (structure–function correlations). The BCVA was measured at monthly visits. Optical coherence tomography scans were acquired monthly for quantitative measures of the central retinal thickness and qualitative assessment of retinal morphologic features. Assessed morphologic parameters included intraretinal cystoid fluid (IRC), subretinal fluid (SRF), pigment epithelial detachment, and vitreomacular interface configuration classification comprising vitreomacular adhesion and posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). An analysis of covariance was conducted to evaluate the impact of retinal morphologic features on BCVA change at month 12. Main Outcome Measures Change in BCVA from baseline to month 12 compared between frequent and infrequent treatment arms. Results Relevant predictive factors for BCVA change at month 12 were baseline SRF ( P = 0.05), PVD ( P = 0.03), IRC ( P = 0.05), treatment frequency ( P < 0.01), and BCVA ( P < 0.01). The presence of both SRF and PVD at baseline was associated with similar BCVA gains regardless of treatment frequency (mean difference in BCVA gains at month 12 of +2.6 letters in favor of infrequent treatment). Subretinal fluid was present in 71% of patients, and PVD was present in 64% of patients. Conclusions In patients with both SRF and PVD at baseline, similar BCVA outcomes were observed regardless of treatment frequency. These patients may require less frequent treatments compared with patients without SRF, without PVD, or without either who may require more frequent injections for maintenance of vision. Physiological performance and tolerance limits in metazoans have been widely studied and have informed our understanding of processes such as extreme heat and cold tolerance, and resistance to water loss. Because of scaling considerations, very small arthropods with extreme microclimatic niches provide promising extremophiles for testing predictive physiological models. Corollaries of small size include rapid heating and cooling (small thermal time constants) and high mass-specific metabolic and water exchange rates. This study examined thermal tolerance and water loss in the erythracarid mite Paratarsotomus macropalpis ( Banks, 1916 ), a species that forages on the ground surface of the coastal sage scrub habitat of Southern California, USA. Unlike most surface-active diurnal arthropods, P. macropalpis remains active during the hottest parts of the day in midsummer. We measured water-loss gravimetrically and estimated the critical thermal maximum (CT max ) by exposing animals to a given temperature for 1 h and then increasing temperature sequentially. The standardized water flux of 4.4 ng h −1 cm −2 Pa −1 , averaged for temperatures between 22 and 40 °C, is among the lowest values reported in the literature. The CT max of 59.4 °C is, to our knowledge, the highest metazoan value reported for chronic (1-h) exposure, and closely matches maximum field substrate temperatures during animal activity. The extraordinary physiological performance seen in P. macropalpis likely reflects extreme selection resulting from its small size and resultant high mass-specific water loss rate and low thermal time-constant. Nevertheless, the high water resistance attained with a very thin lipid barrier, and the mite’s exceptional thermal tolerance, challenge existing theories seeking to explain physiological limits. ABSTRACT Phenotypes vary hierarchically among taxa and populations, among genotypes within populations, among individuals within genotypes, and also within individuals for repeatedly expressed, labile phenotypic traits. This hierarchy produces some fundamental challenges to clearly defining biological phenomena and constructing a consistent explanatory framework. We use a heuristic statistical model to explore two consequences of this hierarchy. First, although the variation existing among individuals within populations has long been of interest to evolutionary biologists, within-individual variation has been much less emphasized. Within-individual variance occurs when labile phenotypes (behaviour, physiology, and sometimes morphology) exhibit phenotypic plasticity or deviate from a norm-of-reaction within the same individual. A statistical partitioning of phenotypic variance leads us to explore an array of ideas about residual within-individual variation. We use this approach to draw attention to additional processes that may influence within-individual phenotypic variance, including interactions among environmental factors, ecological effects on the fitness consequences of plasticity, and various types of adaptive variance. Second, our framework for investigating variation in phenotypic variance reveals that interactions between levels of the hierarchy form the preconditions for the evolution of all types of plasticity, and we extend this idea to the residual level within individuals, where both adaptive plasticity in residuals and canalization-like processes (stability) can evolve. Many studies have examined novel tone perception, but few have investigated the interaction between novel tone perception ability and phonotactic structure. We examined the discrimination of Thai low and mid tones by native Mandarin and native English participants across four syllable types (CCVV, CVV, VV, hums) to test the interaction between first language suprasegmental experience and phonotactic complexity on novel tone discrimination. We also tested the impact of unfamiliar consonant clusters and unfamiliar segments in the onset. Across syllable types, native Mandarin participants discriminated tones better than native English speakers. Further, discrimination ability was not impacted by phonotactic complexity. However, unfamiliar syllable structure impacted discrimination ability for native Mandarin participants in an unintuitive way. They discriminated tones significantly better in CCVV syllables. Unfamiliar segments in the onset, however, had a negative impact on tone discrimination. The presence of /ŋ/ onsets, which are illegal in English and allophonically permitted in Mandarin, significantly reduced tone discrimination accuracy. For native English participants, /ŋ/ onsets resulted in no discrimination between tones. These results suggest that the phonotactic structure of carrier words for tones interacts with L1 phonotactic experience in modulating novel tone perception ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The connections between science and civic culture in the Victorian period have been extensively, and intensively, investigated over the past several decades. Limited attention, however, has been paid to Irish urban contexts. Roman Catholic attitudes towards science in the nineteenth century have also been neglected beyond a rather restricted set of thinkers and topics. This paper is offered as a contribution to addressing these lacunae, and examines in detail the complexities involved in Catholic engagement with science in Victorian Belfast. The political and civic geographies of Catholic involvement in scientific discussions in a divided town are uncovered through an examination of five episodes in the unfolding history of Belfast's intellectual culture. The paper stresses the importance of attending to the particularities of local politics and scientific debate for understanding the complex realities of Catholic appropriations of science in a period and urban context profoundly shaped by competing political and religious factions. Introduction: This study aims to identify and understand how different health care professions working in a psychiatric hospital view the recently implemented occupational therapy service in Italian Switzerland and how they value it as a new treatment component. Method: A constructivist grounded theory study design was chosen to explore the process of integrating an occupational therapy service into the clinic's treatment supply. Eight individual in-depth interviews with different staff members were carried out and analysed by using the constant comparative method. Results: Though building on a solid ground of common assumptions, ambivalence is the core concept that influences health professionals' perceptions with respect to the occupational therapy service. Participants showed a tendency to switch between positive and negative aspects such as affection, rivalry, and scepticism. The small sample size may limit the findings. Conclusions: Considering specific cultural and institutional conditions is important as they influence how others see occupational therapy. Nurses and occupational therapists in particular, in analysing their common assumptions about mental health care, might also reconsider their professional boundaries and how activity and occupation should be distinguished from the perspective of their professional backgrounds. To advance the common level of information about occupational therapy for staff, the professional association could promote the topic more offensive way, while the institution could start developing clear guidelines concerning the mandate of occupational therapy. The period between global suppression (1773) and universal restoration (1814) had a profound impact on the 19th-century Society of Jesus. After an account of the events of the suppression years, the author looks at the impact on both Jesuit self-identity (the relationship between "old" and "new" Society), the Society's relationship with the papacy, and the Jesuits' interaction with the broader 19th-century culture. Performances and physical properties of high technology materials are influenced or even determined by their initial microstructure and by the behavior of impurity phases. Characterizing these impurities and their relations with the surrounding matrix is therefore of primary importance but it unfortunately often requires a destructive approach, with the risk of misinterpreting the observations. The improvement we have done in high resolution X-ray diffraction computed tomography combined with the use of an X-ray nanoprobe allows non-destructive crystallographic description of materials with microscopic heterogeneous microstructure (with a grain size between 10nm and 10im). In this study, the grain localization in a 2D slice of a 20 μm solidified atomized yU-Mo particle is shown and a minority U(C,O) phase (1 wt. %) with sub-micrometer sized grains was characterized inside. Evidence is presented showing that the onset of U(C,O) grain crystallization can be described by a precipitation mechanism since one single U-Mo grain has direct orientation relationship with more than one surrounding U(C,O) grains. Telomeres, the nucleotide sequences that protect the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes, shorten with each cell division and telomere loss may be influenced by environmental factors. Telomere length (TL) decreases with age in several species, but little is known about the sources of genetic and environmental variation in the change in TL (∆TL) in wild animals. In this study, we tracked changes in TL throughout the natural lifespan (from a few months to almost 9 years) of free-living house sparrows (Passerdomesticus) in two different island populations. TL was measured in nestlings and subsequently up to four times during their lifetime. TL generally decreased with age (senescence), but we also observed instances of telomere lengthening within individuals. We found some evidence for selective disappearance of individuals with shorter telomeres through life. Early-life TL positively predicted later-life TL, but the within-individual repeatability in TL was low (9.2%). Using genetic pedigrees, we found a moderate heritability of ∆TL (h2 = 0.21), which was higher than the heritabilities of early-life TL (h2 = 0.14) and later-life TL measurements (h2 = 0.15). Cohort effects explained considerable proportions of variation in early-life TL (60%), later-life TL (53%), and ∆TL (37%), which suggests persistent impacts of the early-life environment on lifelong telomere dynamics. Individual changes in TL were independent of early-life TL. Finally, there was weak evidence for population differences in ∆TL that may be linked to ecological differences in habitat types. The fatty acid-binding protein ( fabp) genes belong to the multigene family of intracellular lipid-binding proteins. To date, 12 different FABPs have been identified in vertebrate genomes. Owing to the teleost-specific genome duplication event, many fishes have duplicated copies of the fabp genes. Here, we identified and characterized the fabp genes of spotted green pufferfish ( Tetraodon nigroviridis). Seven fabp genes were identified, out of which, two were retained in the pufferfish genome as duplicated copies. Each putative pufferfish Fabp protein shares greatest sequence identity and similarity with their teleost and tetrapod orthologs, and clustered together as a distinct clade in phylogenetic analysis. Conserved gene synteny was evident between the pufferfish fabp genes and the orthologs of human, zebrafish, three-spined stickleback, and medaka FABP/fabp genes, providing evidence that the duplicated copies of pufferfish fabp genes most likely arose as a result of the teleost-specific genome duplication event. A whole-genome duplication (WGD) early in the teleost fish lineage makes fish ideal organisms to study the fate of duplicated genes and underlying evolutionary trajectories that have led to the retention of ohnologous gene duplicates in fish genomes. Here, we compare the genomic organization and tissue-specific transcription of the ohnologous fabp7 and fabp10 genes in medaka, three-spined stickleback, and spotted green pufferfish to the well-studied duplicated fabp7 and fabp10 genes of zebrafish. Teleost fabp7 and fabp10 genes contain four exons interrupted by three introns. Polypeptide sequences of Fabp7 and Fabp10 show the highest sequence identity and similarity with their orthologs from vertebrates. Orthology was evident as the ohnologous Fabp7 and Fabp10 polypeptides of teleost fishes each formed distinct clades and clustered together with their orthologs from other vertebrates in a phylogenetic tree. Furthermore, ohnologous teleost fabp7 and fabp10 genes exhibit conserved gene synteny with human FABP7 and chicken FABP10, respectively, which provides compelling evidence that the duplicated fabp7 and fabp10 genes of teleost fishes most likely arose from the well-documented WGD. The tissue-specific distribution of fabp7a, fabp7b, fabp10a, and fabp10b transcripts provides evidence of diverged spatial transcriptional regulation between ohnologous gene duplicates of fabp7 and fabp10 in teleost fishes. This paper looks at digital infrared photography as a technique for identifying primary tattoos even if they have been covered up with additional tattoos. The study's goal was to look at a sufficient number of cover-up tattoos using infrared photography to enable the technique to be used more widely, and to attempt to elucidate the reasons for successful and unsuccessful infrared photography of primary tattoos through cover-up tattoos. Thirty-six tattoos were photographed in infrared along with colour control records. The results showed that primary tattoos could be visualized to some extent in 55.6 % of the cover-up tattoos and very well in 38.9%, this still left some 44.4% where the design of the primary tattoo could not be seen. The extent of visibility of underlying designs was found to depend on the ink colour, ink density and the extent to which the tattooist covered or incorporated the existing tattoo into the new design.
