Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. In recent years, there is an increased use of passive filters in both transmission and distribution systems due to the proliferation of power electronic devices. However, the problem of filter design has not been well addressed in the past and one example is the application of high-pass filters in a filter package. Three types of HP filters are widely used to mitigate multiple harmonics, i.e., 2nd HP filter, 3rd HP filter and C-type filter. There is still a lack of research to clearly reveal the characteristics of each filter, which makes it difficult for the designer to select the optimal filter topology under different circumstances. The main goal of this paper is to solve the problem of how to select a proper configuration among three HP filter candidates for a given harmonic problem. Unlike the conventional optimization-based filter studies, this paper investigates three HP filters in an analytical way. As a result, the paper provides a deep insight into the inherent characteristics of the filter and the conclusions drawn in the paper are universal; thus can be used in different applications, ranging from low voltage levels to high voltage levels. The research results lead to a recommended application scope of each HP filter, which is very useful to guide the design of filter packages and help designers to evaluate the design results. In this paper, a reliable methodology is proposed in order to implement and validate a Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme on an actual Voltage Source Converter (VSC) integrated in a scale-down multi-terminal DC grid. The objective of the investigated MPC controller is to enable AC frequency support among two asynchronous AC areas through a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid, while considering physical constraints, such as maximum and minimum DC voltage. A systematic and accurate implementation strategy is proposed, based mainly on the Hardware In the Loop (HIL) and Power Hardware In the Loop (PHIL), leading to the real-life testing on VSC, controlled by a classical microcontroller. The technical problems during the implementation process, as well as the proposed solutions, are described in detail through this paper. While much attention was given in the literature to improve the fault ride through (FRT) capability of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) during various faults at the grid side, not much attention was given to investigate and improve the performance of the DFIG-WECS under ferroresonance conditions. This paper investigates the impact of ferroresonance on the overall performance of a DFIG-WECS. The paper also presents a new technique to improve the high voltage ride through capability of the investigated system under such condition. The proposed technique relies on incorporating a superconducting coil within the dc-link of the DFIG grid-side and rotor-side converters. Energy exchange between the coil and the system is controlled through regulating the duty cycle of the dc-chopper interfacing the coil with the dc-link. In this regard, a simple but yet effective proportional-integral (PI) controller is employed to regulate the dc-chopper duty cycle. Parameters of the PI controller are optimized using elephant herding optimization algorithm. The advantages of operating selected transmission lines at frequencies other than the standard 50 or 60 Hz are numerous, encompassing increased power transfer capacity and better utilization of existing infrastructure. While high voltage DC (HVDC) is by far the most well-established example, there has been an emerging interest low frequency AC (LFAC) transmission in applications ranging from offshore wind to railway systems and mining. In this paper, we investigate the use of LFAC as a transmission upgrade and propose models and analysis methods to determine the optimal choice of frequency. The paper first presents an optimal power flow model with frequency as a variable, assuming modular multilevel converters for frequency conversion. Using this model, we analyze LFAC as an embedded upgrade in a transmission system using existing lines. We quantify the system-wide advantages from improved power flow control and frequency reduction and find that an LFAC upgrade achieves similar and sometimes better results compared with HVDC upgrades. Finally, we analyze the factors which determine the optimal frequency for these upgraded transmission lines, and we demonstrate the benefits of changing the frequency in response to different system topologies and operating conditions. Grounding electrode is an indispensable part in HVDC transmission projects. During its design and safety evaluation, step voltage is a crucial aspect. By reviewing and sorting out the present standards involving step voltage measurement and its safety limit, this paper illustrates the contradiction between the measurement methods and the safety evaluation criteria. Reasons for the contradiction are explained by analyzing the principal of step voltage measurement and safety evaluation. The Open-circuit step voltage measurement method and the measurement method with a human body equivalent resistance paralleled are compared to find out their advantages and disadvantages. Suitable circumstances and corresponding safety criteria of these two methods are put forward. Method proposed in this paper can be applied to step voltage measurement and safety evaluation of HVDC grounding electrode, providing reference when revising the related standards. This paper presents an asset health index (HI) prediction methodology for high voltage transmission overhead lines (OHLs) using supervised machine learning and structured, unambiguous visual inspections. We propose a framework for asset HI predictions to determine the technical condition of individual OHL towers to improve grid reliability in a cost-effective manner. The paper focuses on asset HI prediction and the selection of the most parsimonious model. Based on the technical specifications and HI data, our methodology allows for the prediction of a HI for OHLs without HI data, and models asset aging behaviour. Technical specifications and the HI as defined in this paper are taken from the Estonian TSO periodical visual inspections implemented in 2018. The case study successfully demonstrates that the proposed methodology can predict tower HI values for a single OHL with nearly 80 percent accuracy without the need for additional measurements. This paper analyzes high-frequency interactions between a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid resonances by studying their effect on the system stability. The recent appearance of converter-related instabilities due to high-frequency oscillations at the converter's ac side raises concerns about whether similar interactions can also take place at its dc side. To determine the risks imposed by such interactions within an HVDC grid, this paper assesses the impact of the MMC internal dynamics and dc system resonances on the stability using an analytical impedance-based method. The effect of fault current-limiting inductors, grid topology changes and transmission line length is investigated, indicating that these parameters considerably influence the electromagnetic characteristics of the HVDC grid and consequently the system stability. The Ultra High Voltage (UHV) converter transformer may generate serious inrush current during closing. It will cause commutation voltage distortion and easily result in commutation failure of converters on the same commutation bus. Due to the change of flux amplitude and phase caused by closing resistance in the Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) system, it is difficult to determine the closing time of the converter transformer when considering the influence of residual flux. Therefore, this paper first analyses the existing closing resistance strategy, and constructs the magnetic bias function according to the influence characteristics of closing resistance on the flux and phase. Then an inrush current suppression strategy based on magnetic bias simulation is proposed for star connection and delta connection of UHV converter transformers, which can accurately calculate the ideal closing time of mutual cancellation between the residual flux and bias flux during closing. Finally, the no-load closing model of the UHV converter transformer is established by PSCAD/EMTDC for simulation analysis of the feasibility, real-time verification is carried out using the RTDS closed-loop experimental platform. This paper widens the application of a testing protocol for overhead line insulators introduced by TERNA. Testing results relevant to three groups of Room Temperature Vulcanized pre-coated cap-and-pin insulators removed from High Voltage Alternate Current and Extra-High Voltage Alternate Current Italian lines after different years of service are reported and statistically processed; the third group is treated here for the first time and new results for the other two groups are included. Among the various tests prescribed in the protocol, focus is on the Quick Flashover test, with the aim to examine and compare the flashover voltages of all three groups as a function of service time. The dependence of flashover voltage on electric field is also analyzed and a model correlating flashover voltage with field and time is proposed for the first time. It is confirmed that the flashover voltages provided by the Quick Flashover test can be considered as a diagnostic property of Room Temperature Vulcanized insulators, as they drop with the ageing time and the electric field. Smart distribution grid with multiple renewable energy sources can experience random voltage fluctuations due to variable generation, which may result in voltage violations. Traditional voltage control algorithms are inadequate to handle fast voltage variations. Therefore, new dynamic control methods are being developed that can significantly benefit from the knowledge of dominant voltage influencer (DVI) nodes. DVI nodes for a particular node of interest refer to nodes that have a relatively high impact on the voltage fluctuations at that node. Conventional power flow-based algorithms to identify DVI nodes are computationally complex, which limits their use in real-time applications. This paper proposes a novel information theoretic voltage influencing score (VIS) that quantifies the voltage influencing capacity of nodes with DERs/active loads in a three phase unbalanced distribution system. VIS is then employed to rank the nodes and identify the DVI set. VIS is derived analytically in a computationally efficient manner and its efficacy to identify DVI nodes is validated using the IEEE 37-node test system. It is shown through experiments that KL divergence and Bhattacharyya distance are effective indicators of DVI nodes with an identifying accuracy of more than 90%. The commutation failure (CF) is the most common fault in line-commutated high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems that may lead to the transient overvoltage in the sending-side system. In the worst condition, the CF may lead to large-scale wind turbine tripping. To resolve this problem, the mathematical relationship between the reactive power consumed by the rectifier and DC voltage, DC current is derived. Then, a transient overvoltage calculation method is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, the mechanism of transient overvoltage caused by the CF is analyzed; it is revealed that the reason for three times transient overvoltage is the rapid decrease of the reactive power consumed by the rectifier during the CF and the recovery period from the CF. This paper proposes a constant reactive power control (CRPC) to inhibit transient overvoltage of the sending-side AC system. The proposed CRPC can increase the reactive power consumed by the rectifier, reduce the exchange reactive power between AC and DC systems, and suppress the transient overvoltage. A simulation model in PSCAD serves to verify the proposed CRPC on the transient overvoltage suppression in the situation of different fault types, fault duration, fault severity and short circuit ratio (SCR). The dc-dc converters with high step-up DC-voltage gain play a vital role in integrating low voltage DC sources. Though several converter topologies are reported in the recent past, attempts have been made to reduce the components, especially the switching devices, passive elements, converter losses, etc., of the converter. A novel DC-DC converter topology, viz., single switched impedance network (SSIN)-based converter with n-stage is proposed in this paper. The operation of the SSIN based converter in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes are discussed. The effect of parasitic elements on DC-voltage gain and efficiency of the SSIN is carried out. The small-signal model of the SSIN converter is derived. The performance of the SSIN converter is compared with the similar converter topologies. The 500 W prototypes of the SSIN with n = 1 and n = 2 are fabricated, and the experimental results are presented in this paper. To improve the converter performance, SiC-based semiconductor devices are used. Insulation systems of electrical apparatus (fluid and solid) include transformer oil, insulating paper, glass, ceramic, mica and rubber. Normally, they are designed well to be stable at high temperatures and provide excellent electrical insulating properties in different operating loads. There is an increasing demand to modify the effectiveness and capabilities of these insulation systems to overcome various issues (e.g., overheating, overloading and short circuits). Moreover, they should match the new high voltage insulation requirements, safety, ultra-high voltage, and being environmentally friendly are some of them. Nanoparticles (NPs) are promising compensator materials that can be used to develop insulation systems with good thermophysical and dielectric properties. The results of many studies show marvelous enhancements in electrical and thermal properties. In this paper, the authors present a review that focuses on different NPs that are used in several aspects of insulation systems to improve the dielectric as well as the heat transfer properties of high voltage insulation applications. When a fault occurs on the dc side of the voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) transmission system, the fault current rises quickly due to the low damping of the dc system. Using a dc fault current limiter (DC-FCL) to limit the rise of the fault current can significantly reduce the breaking requirements of the DCCB. A topology of a bidirectional active dc fault current limiter (BA-FCL) based on coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. No expensive full-controlled power electronic devices are used in this topology. Only a few half-controlled power electronic devices are used to achieve active control of the current limiting unit. Compared with many topologies of current limiter at present, the fault current limiting effect of BA-FCL is improved significantly while the cost, volume, topology complexity, and control complexity are reduced. The stress analysis and parameter design of the proposed current limiter are carried out. This paper presents a technique for circuit breaker radiometric monitoring using broadband plana monopole antennas (PMA). Considering that this work represents the continuity of a previous research, the antenna has been miniaturized using a bioinspired geometry based on the Acer Macrophyllum leaf. The monitoring system consists in measuring the signal radiated by electric arcs in circuit breaker poles during its switching operations. By analyzing these signals, it is possible to evaluate, non-intrusively, the equipment electric and mechanical status, providing important information to maintenance crews regarding the need for interventions. By performing laboratory tests, it was confirmed that the developed bioinspired PMA has adequate gain values, radiation pattern and frequency range to circuit breaker monitoring applications. Moreover, field tests on a 230 kV SF6 circuit breaker were carried out, from which the proposed technique applicability was confirmed. The proposed monitoring technique can be considered a continuous and non-invasive solution, since the antennas can be placed at a safe distance from the equipment under analysis, without compromising the insulation. In the substation, the technique has the potential to detect problems of electrical and mechanical nature, since important operational parameters can be detected, such as opening time and pole synchronicity. Commutation failures (CFs) including repetitive CFs (RCFs) are frequently occurring faults in line commutated converter based high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems. Consequently, sending end system will suffer transient voltage disturbances (TVD) with a characteristic of “first reduce then rise and may repeat”. Due to the complex interaction process of TVD, the electromagnetic process behind this phenomenon cannot be easily explained, which imposes great challenges on the development of mitigation strategies. Given this, this paper provides a deep insight into the mechanism and the impact factors of the TVD caused by CFs and RCFs. The numerical relationship between the transmitting power and the TVD is derived. Research results revealed that the transient process after fault can be segmented into five stages. In each stage, the control interactions among HVDC controllers and power interactions at the PCC are analyzed. Besides, we discussed the TVD under RCFs in detail. Several indices are further proposed to facilitate the characterization of the TVD, and main control loops of HVDC that have impacts on the characteristics of TVD are thereby studied. Hybrid high voltage direct current systems utilized for bulk-power transmission have recently attracted more attention. The overhead lines (OHLs) are mainly used for the implementation of such systems due to their outstanding economic advantages. However, OHLs are vulnerable to temporary faults, jeopardizing the safe and reliable operation of the network. The resiliency to the line faults is of considerable significance to the power transmission. This paper proposes a fault property identification strategy based on the Pearson correlation coefficient for the LCC-MMC hybrid HVDC system which can differentiate temporary and permanent faults. To achieve this, a voltage signal is injected into the faulty line by decreasing the firing angles of the LCC-based rectifier. Based on the established OHLs model and the injected signal, an estimated backward travelling wave can be accurately calculated. The fault property is identified by comparing the wave difference of the real backward travelling wave and the estimated backward travelling wave. The proposed strategy has a high accuracy since all influencing factors including the fault resistance, fault distance, and line parameters have been taken into account. Finally, to verify the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, several simulations have been performed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The modular multilevel converter (MMC), owing to the presence of a large number of submodules (SMs) and energy storing elements, requires a large footprint and initial investment. To address these issues, this paper proposes the switched modular multilevel converter (SMMC). It consists of two major elements; the chain-links (CLs), consisting of cascade connection of SMs as in MMC, and the single-pole-triple-throw (SPTT) switches, which can be realized using either the T-type or NPC-type switch strings. The SMMC works on the principle of connecting all the phase-legs in series and their respective positions are mutually interchanged. It offers a compact structure as the SMs count is reduced to 33% of MMC, which results in a much lower energy storage requirement. Furthermore, it does not have inter-phase circulating current problem and hence the CL inductors can also be avoided. The SMMC structure, operating principles, control, and modulation schemes are explained in detail. A detailed comparison of SMMC with the other major existing converters is carried out to highlight the important features of SMMC. The efficacy of SMMC is validated using PSCAD simulation studies with a 19-level grid-connected SMMC model. With the emergence of the hybrid multi-infeed high voltage direct current (HMIDC) system, there is complex dynamic interaction between the AC/DC system and converter stations, while the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is unclear. For this purpose, this paper establishes the HMIDC linearized model based on the motion equation concept. Then, after decoupling and reconstructing the interaction path of the HMIDC system, the damping coefficients are derived. The AC system strength and voltage source converter (VSC) terminal voltage controller parameters are selected to analyze the impacts on damping coefficients, and the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is analyzed. In order to solve the potential instability issue, an additional damping controller in the VSC terminal voltage loop is proposed to enhance the voltage stability of HMIDC system, which is realized by adjusting the reactive power/amplitude coupling damping coefficient. Finally, the RT-LAB-based hardware-in-the-loop experiments verify the accuracy of the interaction mechanism analysis of the HMIDC system and the effectiveness of the proposed controller. Ultra-high voltage fast vacuum circuit breakers (FVCBs) could benefit a power system by promoting transient stability because their opening and closing times are significantly lower than those of commonly used circuit breakers at transmission voltage. This paper presents the design and verification of a prototype 363-kV/5000-A – 63-kA multiple-break FVCB. The prototype consists of two parallel-connected circuit branches in each phase. Each branch comprises three breaking units. The breaking unit, arranged on a 330-kV-class insulating platform, is a double-break FVCB driven by two independent electromagnetic repulsion actuators. The breaking units include a specially designed 40.5-kV vacuum interrupter (VI) with an extended ceramic envelope and optimized contact contours. A 4.0-nF grading capacitor is connected in parallel with each break to achieve a uniform stressed voltage distribution across the break. The prototype performs controlled switching of short-circuit current with an arcing time of 2.0 ms. The feasibility of the 363-kV FVCB is verified by a dielectric test on one break of the prototype and a series of tests on a single-phase prototype according to the international standard IEC 62271-100, 2017 and the Chinese standard GB 1984-2014. The tests include controlled switching of a short-circuit current in a short arcing time under different transient recovery voltages following test duties T100s(b) and T100a, short-time withstand current and peak withstand current tests, a temperature rise test, and an electromagnetic compatibility test. This paper presents a high-voltage emission driver chiplet for inorganic micro-pixelated light-emitting-diode ($\mu $ LED) displays in a standard 0.18- $\mu \text{m}$ CMOS technology. Different from the conventional driving scheme of the active-matrix organic light-emitting-diode display, which places the scan drivers and emission drivers at the panel bezels, the CMOS driver chiplets are proposed to sit on the glass substrate among $\mu $ LEDs. The high-voltage swing buffers in the CMOS chiplet are used to drive the low-temperature poly-silicon thin-film transistors on glass backplane to enable the emission control of 300 $\mu $ LEDs. A single CMOS chiplet has 20 output channels, each offering 16M-color depth with 256 grey levels realized by an 8-bit digital-to-analog converter. Inter-turn short-circuit fault (ISF) is a typical incipient fault of the PMSM, which could be detected by high frequency (HF) signal injection method with high resolution. However, the performance comparisons and key parameter selections for various signal injection methods remain untouched. In this paper, different HF injection signals, including rotating high frequency voltage (RHFV), pulsating high frequency voltage (PHFV) and rotating high frequency current (RHFC), are put forward and compared by extracting the HF fault features in zero-sequence voltage space. Since the RHFV injection method has the advantages of high resolution and simple control structure, the fault features under the RHFV signal injection with different parameters are studied. In order to obtain ISF detection resolution as high as possible, the frequency of the RHFV signal is suggested to be near half the PWM frequency of the PMSM inverter. This paper presents a combined control scheme that consists of two complementary control strategies, namely hierarchical control and autonomous control to handle contingencies in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) system. The proposed hierarchical control considers three optimal targets, i.e., equal or proportional power sharing, minimizations of transmission loss and total DC voltage variation. The primary control layer implements the droop control for voltage source converters (VSCs). While in the secondary control layer, voltage reference setpoints of the VSCs in droop control scheme are calculated by the proposed optimal power flow method with the equal or proportional power sharing as equality constraints. As the hierarchical control relies on communication system, the autonomous control for power sharing can be activated during communication system malfunctioning or rapid power variation caused by renewable energy sources. The combined control strategy can greatly increase the reliability of the MTDC system. To improve the reliability of power supply, reclosing schemes are required after transient faults, which commonly occur in overhead line based high voltage DC (HVDC) systems. However, in the event of permanent faults, the auto-reclosing scheme may cause a severe strike. To avoid the severe impacts caused by permanent faults, the fault type should be discriminated before activating the reclosing scheme. Therefore, an adaptive reclosing scheme based on phase characteristics is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the modulation of a periodic voltage by actively controlling the hybrid DC circuit breaker (DCCB) is introduced. Then, a cascaded π equivalent model and its decoupling algorithm are presented to analyze the frequency-domain characteristics of the measured impedance of the coupled overhead lines. From the frequency-domain characteristics, the frequency of the periodic detecting voltage is determined to analyze the phase features of the measured impedance at primary frequency. The permanent or transient faults can thus be accurately identified by using these different phase characteristics, with negligible influence on the healthy lines. The HVDC systems have been employing modular multilevel converters (MMC) due to their unique high voltage high power potential. However, the lack of fault ride-through capability imposes restrictions on MMCs that are based on half-bridge (HB) modules. Since it is necessary to limit the fault currents to protect MMCs from serious short circuit faults against pole-to-pole DC fault, several protection schemes have been introduced to deal with the DC short circuit faults. This paper proposes a new hybrid MMC protective topology consisting of a combination of the HB and three-quarter-bridge (TQB) modules. The TQB behaves like an HB under normal operation and has low power losses compared to other protective topologies. Modulation and control of this configuration are like HB-based MMC. Ground wires (GW) struck by lightning are often exposed to transient impulse voltages in the MV range. This results in intense negative streamer-type corona, causing a considerable increase in the effective wire capacitance and a corresponding reduction in its surge impedance. Such variables have a significant influence on the tower top potential and on the electromagnetic coupling between the ground wire and phase conductors. Presently there is considerable uncertainty regarding the impulse corona parameters to be used in back flashover calculations. In the present paper a new method is formulated for determination of GW impulse corona parameters. The new approach is compared with two existing methods and with available experimental results. It is found that the method usually used within the IEEE has little physical justification and is excessively conservative. It is also shown that such corona parameters significantly depend on the GW height above ground, which has been totally ignored in the CIGRE method. This and other unjustified simplifying assumptions explain the surprisingly large discrepancy between values of the negative impulse corona constant recommended by CIGRE and IEC. This paper proposes a load transfer optimization (LTO) model involving hot-spot temperature (HST) and top-oil temperature (TOT) limits of transformers. This work aims to address the overload problem and transformer HST and TOT excursions via LTO. First, the equivalent thermal model for the HST and TOT of transformers under external cooling conditions are discussed, and then the corresponding linearized HST and TOT constraints with varied thermal resistances are derived using the discretization method. Moreover, the proposed LTO model is formulated on the reconfigurable topology of high voltage distribution networks (HVDNs) in China. This proposed LTO model can achieve the optimal network reconfiguration scheme subject to temperature limits and system operation constraints, with the least switching operation cost and the maximum margins of reactive power exchange between HVDNs and transmission systems. Integration of wind-based renewable energy sources into long Extra High Voltage/Ultra High Voltage uncompensated/compensated power transmission network poses significant problems in terms of proper detection of power swings and effective discrimination between symmetrical faults and power swing situations. As the existing protection strategies are unable to detect the said circumstances, a novel technique, based on the difference between sending end and receiving end positive sequence currents angles of the transmission line, is proposed in this paper. The required data is collected with the help of Phasor Measurement Units placed on both sides of the line. The scheme results in effective discrimination between distinct faults and circumstances of asymmetrical/symmetrical power swing and achieves satisfactory outcome during current transformer saturation condition. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on the wind-integrated IEEE-9 bus system by producing power swings, various cases of faults, and faults during power swings. Validation of the suggested technique was carried out by the execution of hardware-in-loop simulation on a Real-Time Digital Simulator. This paper develops a new control strategy for voltage source converter (VSC) based multi-terminal high voltage dc (MT-HVDC) grids for enhancing the mutual frequency support between MT-HVDC interconnected asynchronous ac systems. The existing droop control structure of VSCs is augmented with an additional feedback voltage-based loop that generates a voltage shifting term to be added to the original dc voltage reference. The addition of this integrator-based controller nullifies the difference between voltage errors seen at adjacent converter stations. This action helps to overcome inaccuracies in the mutual frequency support caused by the uneven voltages across a dc system. The proposed strategy uses only local variables for the continuous-time control; thus, it does not rely on a high-bandwidth communication network, and its performance is not affected by the change of ac systems’ parameters. Modal analysis is carried out to investigate the stability of the proposed controller. The missing capability of DC fault current limitation is an inherent disadvantage in the typical half-bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC), which restricts its application in long-distance high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. The full-bridge submodule (FBSM) and clamped double submodule (CDSM) topologies allow for fault current self-clearing, but also suffer from additional hardware cost and power losses. In this paper, an improved submodule topology utilizing the new reverse-blocking insulated gate bipolar transistor (RB-IGBT) is proposed to improve system economy without compromising its performance. The operating principles and DC fault characteristics of the proposed topology are analyzed in details, including comparison with various topologies in terms of cost, losses, fault current clearing speed and thermal. Compared with the traditional CDSM topology, the proposed RBSM can clear DC faults faster with reduced cost of switching devices. A DC fault protection strategy for MMC-HVDC system is also presented. This paper presents a new power electronic topology for a STATCOM allowing the generation of multilevel AC voltages. This topology is characterized by a modular configuration since it uses two well known four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. A Scott transformer with multiple secondary windings connects the two four-leg inverters to the grid. One of the important features of the proposed power topology is the capability to generate AC voltages with high number of levels, in spite of using only two four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. To maximize the number of voltage levels a geometric progression ratio of 3 between the windings of the transformers connected in cascade is proposed. However, to reduce the turns-ratio span, alternatively a fractional geometric ratio of 1.5 is also proposed and analyzed. A control strategy adapted to the proposed power converter topology is also presented. Besides the control of the reactive power the regulation of the four-leg inverter DC voltage will also be considered. To support the theoretical studies and assumptions, simulations and experiments are presented. Experimental results were obtained using a low power laboratory prototype. Modular multilevel converters have become the technology of choice in high voltage direct current systems. They are composed of a large number of submodules, which poses significant computational challenges to electromagnetic transient simulations. To address this issue, scholars proposed several approaches that are a trade-off between simulation accuracy and computational burden, which mainly achieve numerical efficiency by adopting reduced and simplified models of the converter arm submodules. This paper proposes a different simulation paradigm based on sub-circuit isomorphism. It is suited for the analysis of intrinsically modular electronic circuits, as it exploits the common behavior of structurally identical submodules by clustering them together. This method does not require any simplification of the submodule electrical model and minimizes the number of equations to be solved at each time step of the time domain analysis, thereby significantly reducing the computational effort. Thus, this method is suitable for thorough simulations of ac/dc networks, which may require the implementation of detailed transistor-level representations of the converter submodules. Due to the increasing penetration of large-scale renewable energy generation at transmission level, hybrid AC/DC transmission expansion is becoming more relevant by the day, especially if the considered renewable generation is far away from existing AC grid infrastructure. This paper presents a multi-period hybrid AC/DC network expansion planning model that incorporates node voltages, reactive power and network losses. Since the operation of a high voltage DC link is influenced considerably by the converter stations, converter transformer, filter, and phase reactor are modeled in each converter station. Since the AC power flow equations render a non-convex problem whose solution algorithms do not always guarantee convergence or optimality, a second-order conic relaxation is utilized. The resulting model is a mixed-integer convex problem with a convergence guarantee that embodies a better approximation of system operation than its DC linear counterpart. Three-port converters with high voltage gain are desirable solutions for integrating renewable energy and energy storage devices into high voltage dc bus. A high gain three-port converter with soft switching is proposed in this paper, which can realize zero voltage switching for all switches and zero current switching for all diodes in various operating modes. Single coupled inductor is used to achieve high voltage gain and to reduce the voltage stress of switches so that switches with low on-resistance can be selected to reduce the conduction loss. In addition, the advantages of fewer components, higher voltage gain, and very low switch voltage stresses make the proposed converter more suitable for application in renewable energy systems than similar solutions. Various operating modes, performance analysis, design considerations, efficiency analysis, and control method of the proposed converter are discussed. Calculation of geomagnetically induced current (GIC) flowing through power system during the geomagnetic storm has attracted more attention recently. However, for high voltage power systems with transmission lines over hundreds or even thousands of kilometers, the earth model and geomagnetical field generally vary significantly. So, it is essential to take them into consideration using limited earth survey sites and geomagnetic observatories. To address this problem, a Kriging method is introduced in this paper to make earth model and geomagnetical field interpolations. It has the characteristic of spatial autocorrelation by considering not only the distances between predicted points and training points but also the distances between training points themselves. This article develops a series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters to realize additional voltage pumping and high power density through two propositions. Proposition 1 develops two improved positive- and negative-connected Z-source dc–dc converters (IPZSC and INZSC), using the same number of components as in the existing voltage pumping Z-source converter. Based on Proposition 1, Proposition 2 proposes four novel embedded Z-source dc–dc converters (EZSCs) by placing the source in a specifically designed position, which realizes lower voltage stresses across capacitors. Various technical aspects of the proposed EZSCs, including operations, power losses, and small signal stability analyses are detailed in this paper. Besides, comparisons between the proposed series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters and other existing Z-source dc–dc converters are thoroughly made to demonstrate the better performance of the EZSCs. In High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids, system parameter and/or topology changes following HVDC grid protection actions affect system dynamics and in combination with the existence of line inductors in series with HVDC circuit breakers (DCCB), pose a challenge to designing converter controls that satisfy desired performance and stability requirements. To date, several methods have been proposed for evaluating the influence of the line inductors on system stability; however, tuning of the MMC controls considering system parameter and/or topology changes following HVDC grid protection actions haven’t been studied in detail. This paper presents a systematic tuning procedure for a robust operation of MMCs in any HVDC grid configuration. The proposed method analyzes the impact of variations in HVDC grid system parameters and control bandwidths (BWs) using small-signal based stability analysis and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD)-based performance analysis methods. In addition, it considers the impact of line outages associated with HVDC grid protection actions in order to select optimal control gains that fulfill performance and stability requirements of the HVDC grid for given HVDC Circuit Breakers (DCCBs) line inductor values. Electrical faults, which can occur at all voltage levels in an electricity supply system, are a health and safety risk. Multi-branch distribution networks represent a significant ongoing challenge for fault detection, with the greatest challenge being high impedance fault (HIF) detection. To date, research has focused on higher voltage levels, and fault monitoring sensors have traditionally only been installed in limited locations within the higher voltage networks. The main contributions of this paper are to characterize a high impedance fault (HIF) involving a tree branch and to experimentally verify the feasibility of giant magneto-resistive (GMR) sensors, located distant from the overhead lines, for fault detection. In a purpose-built 400 V physical simulation test facility, we have collected current and magnetic field data during HIF involving a tree branch. We have identified new characteristics in the early stages of this fault type, which persist for a reasonable length of time but are only observable when suitable signal processing techniques are applied. New detection schemes will, therefore, need to be developed to detect such faults. This paper presents protection and fault location of wye-connected shunt capacitor banks used in medium or high voltage applications. The proposed method is sensitive to single element failure obtained by using voltage adaptive instantaneous superimposed current in each phase. The change in equivalent reactance computed using time-domain signals is used to find the number of failed capacitor element and types of fault. The location of the faulted capacitor is identified using sign of the voltage difference of the lower and upper halves of the shunt capacitor bank. The performance of the proposed method is tested for various cases including identical faults, simultaneous faults, system voltage unbalance in both single and double wye-connected shunt capacitor banks. This paper focuses on the potential of epoxy resin/aluminum nitride (EP/AIN) nanocomposites through experiments and simulation for the packaging material of a 15 kV SiC-IGBT module. For this purpose, space charge, AC breakdown, thermal conductivity and glass transition temperature $(T_{\mathrm{g}})$ are measured. The electric stress reduction effect in EP/AIN nanocomposites is compared to the traditional packaging material at high-frequency AC and square voltages at 150 °C using the electric field simulation. The experimental results show that the 2 wt% EP/AIN nanocomposite exhibits the least space charge accumulation, highest AC breakdown strength and $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ amongst the tested nanocomposites. The offset of metallization layers plays a crucial role in the impact of the electrical properties of packaging materials on the electric field of the packaging structure. When the offset of metallization layers is zero, the maximum electric stress in the EP/AIN nanocomposites is lower than the traditional packaging material, both under the AC and square voltages. In the EP/AIN nanocomposites, as the frequency or the nano-AIN content increases, the maximum electric stress decreases under the AC voltages. Traditional packaging materials have a steeper transient electric field variation than EP/AIN nanocomposites, although the transient process is smoother at higher frequencies under square voltages for all the considered materials. The research on characteristics of C 4 F 7 N and epoxy resin insulation system affected by long-term electro-thermal accelerated aging can provide the reference for the application of C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 gas mixtures. In this paper, a long-term electro-thermal accelerated aging experimental platform of gas-solid insulation system is established, and more than 3000 hours of experiments are carried out. The results show that there is not a significant change in leakage current in the system, at the same time, none of the gas decomposition products are detected in the C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 gas mixtures during the aging experiment. With the increase of aging experiment time, the number of tiny holes on the epoxy resin surface increases significantly. The surface of the epoxy resin sample near the high voltage electrode is most obviously damaged. The surface of epoxy resin shows slightly fluorinated, and the color of it has changed from white to yellow on account of the adsorption of C 4 F 7 N gas by the holes on the sample surface. Flashover voltage of epoxy resin is basically consistent before and after aging by the power frequency or negative lightning impulse applied. It proves that the gas-solid insulation system of C 4 F 7 N and epoxy resin can keep the insulation performance basically consistent, affected by longterm electro-thermal accelerated aging. Due to the independent controllability and fast power regulation capability, the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system could be a prospective technology to provide multiple ancillary services to the system besides conventional bulk power transmission. However, with the increase of False Data Injection Attacks (FDIAs) on PMU data, the HVDC system could have the wrong response once the collected data that the HVDC system relied on is attacked, thus threatening the system operating security. How to ensure the security of the PMU-based HVDC ancillary service control become an urgent issue. To mitigate the risk, this paper proposed an HVDC attack-defense control based on the FDIAs detection method. Firstly, the Squeeze-Excitation based Double Convolutional Neural Networks (SE-DCNN) is proposed to realize fast identification of the attacking frequency type based on the time and frequency domain signals. The duration time of FDIAs is detected by the local outlier factor. Then, utilizing the results from SE-DCNN, HVDC ancillary service control framework is reorganized and an HVDC attack defense control is proposed for suppressing the potential influence of various types of FDIAs on the HVDC system ancillary service. DC fault protection is the bottleneck that restricts the development of modular multilevel converter based high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system. Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) is an ideal protection device that can significantly limit short circuit current and enhance the fault tolerance ability of MMC-HVDC system. At present, several topologies of SFCLs have been proposed, but there is no systematical study of their current-limiting characteristics in MMC-HVDC. This paper studies the development process of DC short-circuit faults in MMC-HVDC system, and analyzes its demand for fault current limiting. Then, resistive type, saturated iron core type and hybrid type SFCL are modeled and their limiting effect of critical fault current under DC pole-to-pole fault is tested. By comparison, the current-limiting characteristics of three types of SFCL are concluded. Results show that resistive SFCL has best performance in steady state, while saturated iron core SFCL has best performance in transient state. Offshore wind farms pose the challenge of transmission of produced energy in an economic and effective way over long distances, justifying investments in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems. A solution to surmount the need for an expensive and large power transformer station is to connect each wind turbine to a DC/DC converter in which a Medium Frequency Transformer (MFT) is utilized to reduce the size of the station. Further, the DC outputs of the converters of the wind turbines can be connected in series to create a high DC voltage. In this solution, the MFTs are required to be insulated against a high DC voltage to ground in a limited compartment. This contribution presents a prototype of a 50 kW oil-paper insulated MFT operating at biased 422/4500 V/V AC 5 kHz and 125 kV DC test voltage, which has been manufactured and subjected to verification HV tests. The dielectric design of the prototype MFT based on finite element solution of non-linear Maxwell-Wagner equations is introduced and the acceptance criteria and practical design considerations are discussed. The converter transformers are reported to fail generally on the thyristor-valve side, where complex alternating voltage waveforms superimposed with dc voltages would occur. The effect of these waveforms on the failure and endurance of the valve side winding insulation of the transformers is not yet understood, which is investigated here. In this paper, the voltage waveforms occurring in a converter transformer are obtained through PSCAD/EMTDC for a typical double pole ±500 kV, 1000 MW DC-link HVDC transmission system based on the CIGRE benchmark system. The waveforms are then amplified using a High Voltage amplifier for experimental breakdown investigations. Stepped-stress damage equalization method has been used for obtaining the lifetime characteristics from failure data. A comparison with life curve under pure sinusoidal and actual alternating voltages with superimposed dc and harmonic voltage has been made to understand why the converter transformers generally failed on the valve side. High-frequency overvoltages are most dangerous for the insulation of transformer coils. It is because high-frequency pulse voltage creates an uneven distribution of voltage across the windings. The coil's first turns receive a disproportionately high voltage drop, leading to the inter-turn circuit. The paper analyzes the types of lightning pulses and proposes a new suppression method based on the anomalous skin effect in a multilayer material and the design in the form of a coil. White-box models are detailed models for the investigation of the internal behavior of transformers during dielectric design. A new model of this type with significantly improved characteristics is presented in this paper. The model has been developed in state-space form, which is more flexible than an equivalent circuit and also makes it possible to optionally hide proprietary information on internal voltages. The proposed parameter determination methodology is very robust and allows the adequate representation of the damping. The methodology for determining inductive impedances and capacitances as a function of frequency using the Finite Element Method is described first. Then the fitting of the impedances obtained in the frequency domain by means of rational approximation functions is presented, which is based on the Vector Fitting algorithm in combination with Particle Swarm Optimization. The state-space model is obtained next, which is then used to perform time and frequency domain calculations. This paper focuses on the multi-dimensional performance analysis including the oxidation performance, crystal morphology, thermal properties, mechanical properties and dielectric behavior of the thermally aged extra high voltage XLPE submarine cable insulation. Results show that the antioxidation and thermal oxidative aging of XLPE insulation are coexisting and competing during the thermal degradation process. In the early stage of thermal degradation, the antioxidation of XLPE insulation is dominant resulting in the decline of the spacing between spherulites. In the later stage of thermal degradation, thermally oxidative aging of XLPE insulation is dominant, which leads to the damage of the crystalline morphology and the rapid generation of aging products. It is indicated that the mechanical strength of the XLPE insulation is mainly determined by its internal crystalline morphology, while the dielectric properties of the XLPE insulation are governed by the crystalline morphology, aging products and micro interface. With the thermal aging time extended, the breakdown strength of XLPE insulation first increases and then decreases, which is determined by its amorphous region and aging products.
