THE ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society takes great pleasure in announcing the selection of the Outstanding Paper published in its 2009 Transactions, Vol. 56. The award was presented during ceremonies at the 2010 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium in San Diego, California, October 12th, 2010. This article focuses on the Electrochemical Society meeting held in Los Angeles, California. The first symposium of the Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry Division focused on Durability and Reliability of Low-Temperature Fuel Cells and Fuel Cell Systems. This symposium presented Outstanding Student Paper Awards to students of various universities of the United States. For example, Vishal Mittal of the University of Connecticut got the award for his paper entitled, "Factors Accelerating Membrane Degradation Rate and the Underlying Degradation Mechanism in PEMFC." In this paper, experiments were performed to elucidate the factors and conditions important for photoelectromagnetic degradation.

The article discusses on the 32nd International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) held in Monterey, California. This Special Issue focuses on Plenary and Invited Papers from ICOPS. There are invited talks included in the issue which subjects ranged from the traditional interests in basic plasma processes, microwave generation and charged particle beams, and other plasma-related topics.

The ideas of the papers in this special section have originally been presented at the first edition of the workshop on Specification and Validation of Real Time and Embedded Systems (SVERTS) that was held as a satellite workshop of the UML 2003 Conference in San Francisco. The motivation for initiating this workshop was the fact that UML started to be used more and more also for modelling real-time and embedded software systems, whereas it was lacking features for appropriately modelling this kind of systems. Another motivation was the fact that UML was missing an accepted dynamic semantics, or at least a framework for defining profiles not just in terms of syntax, but also their semantics. An awareness of the growing importance of the Chinese overseas was recognized in convening the major conference Luodi-shenggen: The Legal Political and Economic Status of Chinese in Diaspora, which was held in San Francisco, California in November 1992. The organizing committee had designated five major themes around which participants could write their papers. Panels were created around these themes, with additional panels developed around topics that emerged as being of concern as planning for the conference progressed. Concern tended to center around the general issues of overseas Chinese communities and, in particular, the origin and structure of new Chinatowns. In total, over 140 papers were presented encompassing these themes during the three days of the conference. Just under half of the papers were presented in Chinese and the rest in English. The sessions on business relations devoted much attention to the strategies of Chinese entrepreneurs within both local and regional contexts. The sessions on migration covered the gamut from theoretical, global aspects of the Chinese diaspora to local dimensions of the Chinese migrant and criminal law. Particular attention was focused on two of the main destinations of migration such as Australia and Canada.

The clinical course of influenza and the extent of lung injury are determined by both viral and host factors, as well as sometimes secondary bacterial infections and exacerbations of underlying conditions. The balance between viral replication and the host immune responses is central to disease pathogenesis, and the extent of lung injury in severe influenza infections may be due in part to overly exuberant or dysregulated innate inflammatory responses or sometimes deficient responses. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the principal cause of respiratory failure associated with severe influenza. ARDS can be triggered by both direct lung insults (e.g. respiratory pathogens) and systemic insults (e.g. sepsis), and the lung damage is exacerbated by the inflammatory response associated with either infectious or non-infectious insults. This workshop aimed to review the current understanding of lung injury in acute influenza and describe cellular and molecular mechanisms of lung injury that are common to influenza and infections by other respiratory pathogens. In addition, therapeutic agents that target host response proteins and pathways were identified and investigational agents in development reviewed. A logical strategy would be to combine antiviral treatment with drugs that modify excessive host responses or supplement deficient ones. However, a better understanding of common cell signalling pathways associated with acute lung injury caused by influenza and other pathogens is necessary to understand immunopathologic causes of lung injury. This will help determine which immunomodulatory interventions might be useful, and to predict the appropriate timing and consequences of their use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As many other domains in biology, molecular structures have proposed challenging but interesting computational problems. The unique challenge of the 3-dimensional molecular structures comes from the combination of the fundamental concepts of physics, chemistry, biology and geometry, and it is often computationally intensive to search for the correct structure. The Computational Structural Bioinformatics Workshop (CSBW) is a workshop that focuses on the fundamental computational work that is related to 3-dimensional molecular structures. This workshop aims to bring together researchers with expertise in bioinformatics, computational biology, structural biology, data mining, optimization and high performance computing to discuss recent results, new techniques, and open research problems in computational structural bioinformatics. The first workshop was held on November 4, 2007 in San Jose California, in conjunction with the International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine (BIBM). The papers in this issue were selected from the third workshop that was held on November 1, 2009 at Washington D.C. We received thirty-three paper submissions in 2009. Eight were selected for an extended version for the publication on BMC Structural Biology. Although the number of the submissions is limited, the papers often come from the research groups that have the established records in structural bioinformatics. The Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE 2011) conference held in Grenoble, France in March 2011 featured 57 technical sessions and around 200 papers.
