Thermal energy storage (TES) devices use phase change materials (PCMs) to store and release thermal energy. Control-oriented models are needed to predict the behavior of TES devices and experimental validation is necessary to demonstrate the predictive capabilities of these models. This paper presents an experimental validation of a switched moving boundary (MB) approach for modeling TES devices, where the dynamics of the device are captured with fewer states than traditional models. A graph-based modeling approach is used to model heat flow, while the moving boundary captures the time-varying liquid and solid regions of the TES. The model uses a finite state machine (FSM) to switch between four modes of operation based on the state-of-charge (SOC) of the TES. Results show that the switched MB approach has similar accuracy and lower computational cost compared to traditional modeling approaches when predicting the SOC of an experimental TES device. When compared to electrically modulated brakes (EMBs), such as a magnetic particle brake, modern brushless direct current (BLDC) motors have substantially higher power densities, and therefore have become an attractive alternative to EMBs for applications requiring controllable modulated resistance (i.e., torque-controllable braking). Unlike brakes, however, which fundamentally guarantee strict passivity, emulating mechanical resistance with a motor does not guarantee passive behavior. In order to enable the use of a motor as a torque-controllable brake with fundamentally guaranteed passivity, this paper presents a control scheme that provides high-fidelity torque tracking and physically guarantees strictly passive behavior. Specifically, this paper: (1) describes model-based control methods for applications requiring high-fidelity torque control and strictly passive impedance; (2) presents an analysis that characterizes the limits of control and tradeoffs of controllability and energy generation associated with using a motor in this manner; and (3) presents experimental results that validate both the system characterization and control performance for the strictly passive controllable impedance approach. As an evolutional concept of aero engine, the variable cycle engine (VCE) can adjust the thermodynamic cycle via working on different modes to meet different flight missions. These working modes lead to the performance and stability of variable geometries for mode switching under different mission profiles. This paper aims at the performance prediction under different working conditions on the key variable geometry, namely, the forward variable area bypass injector (FVABI). The rotary and translating mathematical calculation models are established and validated via the three-dimensional numerical simulation. It considers the choked flow state caused by area change at FVABI and mode selector valve (MSV). The variable geometry schedules at the typical subsonic cruise working condition are analyzed based on the zero-dimensional engine performance model. It verifies the efficiency of the improved zero-dimensional bypass mixing calculation model to predict the mixing characteristics of the FVABI on different operating modes. The maximum error of the total pressure recovery coefficient and the ejection ratio is 2.3% and 6.2%, respectively. Although the simultaneous production of heat and power, the so-called combined heat and power (CHP), is from a thermodynamic point of view still the most efficient energy conversion method, cogeneration units have nowadays problems to position themselves in the current and future energy market. The increasing renewable energy penetration requires CHP units to become more flexible, especially on their currently fixed heat-to-power ratio. Within this framework, micro-gas turbines (mGTs), as small-scale decentralized cogeneration units, offer opportunities. Since they use the recuperated Brayton cycle, they offer the theoretic option to adjust the internal heat streams to provide a flexible heat-to-power ratio as well as the unique feature of a tunable outlet temperature, making the unit feasible/interesting for a larger range of applications having a combined heat and power demand. Hence, in this paper, we assessed the impact of the use of a recuperator bypass for enhanced operational flexibility of mGT. In a first step, the optimal pathway for the recuperator bypass, i.e., cold or hot side bypass, is selected for a typical mGT, the Turbec T100 (currently commercially available as the AE-T100), considering both thermodynamics as well as technological feasibility. Moreover, the potential performance impact on the electrical and total efficiency is calculated as well as on the total available thermal power. In a second step, the specific performance of the option of using a recuperator bypass is assessed for two specific cases: flexible heat-to-power ratio at low temperature and high temperature, i.e., steam generation, cogeneration. Thermodynamic simulations show that the impact on the electric efficiency remains rather limited (maximal 6% absolute efficiency reduction for a 40% bypass ratio), while the available thermal energy and exergy increase significantly: up to 60% increase for thermal power and even 115% increase in the exergy content of the flue gases. Moreover, there is no distinct difference between cold or hot bypass, leaving the selection of the optimal bypass route a pure technical choice. Finally, considering the specific cases studied, simulation results show that heat-to-power ratio could be increased by more than 50% for all power outputs for the low temperature CHP applications, even resulting in a global efficiency increase, while for the high temperature case, recuperator bypass allows for a significant increase in steam production, at total efficiencies comparable to the separate production (i.e., boiler and grid), clearly highlighting the benefits and potential of a recuperator bypass. This paper aims at introducing an original, simulation based, methodology to optimize air charging system of a medium speed engine in order to improve fuel consumption/NOx tradeoff, over a given load profile. A preliminary study is performed on an engine originally equipped with fixed geometry turbocharger (TC) matched at full load. It shows that improving the TC efficiency has a positive impact at matching point but an adverse effect at lower loads. Therefore, matching the TC at part load is more promising when the whole engine operating range is considered. However, this requires using a relief system to avoid unacceptable peak firing pressure (PFP) at full load, and may alter regulated NOx emission. A new, original methodology is then proposed. Using an advanced existing algorithm, it allows for simultaneous optimization of injection timing, main TC matching and relief system design. The objective is to minimize fuel consumption averaged over several operating points (corresponding to actual load profile). At the same time, NOx emission, evaluated on regulatory cycle, is kept below a given limit and others reliability constrains are fulfilled. The methodology is assessed with several case studies: • First, various relief systems (blow-off valve, waste gate (WG) and parallel sequential turbocharger (PTC)) are compared on a given load profile. • Then, the dimensioning of a TC + WG system is performed for two different load profiles. Nickel-based alloys such as Inconel 718 belong to the group of heat-resistant super alloys. Combined with good mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures, nickel alloys are used extensively in the aero engine sections exposed to elevated temperatures. Besides turbine blades and disks, integrally designed compressor rotors (Blisks) in the high-pressure compressor are increasingly made of Ni alloys. This is the result of an efficiency-driven increase in temperature levels in the rear compressor stages. The machining of these hard-to-machine materials is characterized by low productivity and high tool wear. Compared to the machining with conventional cemented carbide end mills, innovative SiAlON ceramics offer a significant potential to increase the performance of these machining processes while saving cooling-lubricants. Besides an increase in productivity, the evaluation of the overall environmental impact of specific manufacturing processes is gaining importance in the context of more sustainable product life cycles. This paper focuses on the comparison of different milling strategies in the production of high-pressure compressor rotors made from Inconel 718 in a cradle-to-gate assessment based on DIN EN ISO 14040/44. Thus, the ecological impact of both the state-of-the-art and the novel SiAlON roughing strategy are evaluated considering the consumption of energy, water and compressed air as well as the tool wear. With the increasing need for flexibility in the electricity grid, combined with longer periods of low electricity prices due to an oversupply of renewable electricity, alternative solutions which include the production of carbon-free fuels in combination with the use of combined cycle power plants, are identified as a possible solution. These so-called power-to-gas-to-power solutions (P2G2P), with hydrogen and ammonia as fuel, require further research to determine their feasibility. Within this scope, the European collaborative project FLEXnCONFU aims at providing an answer toward this feasibility. The specific project idea is to recover excess grid power to produce hydrogen through proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. Then, this hydrogen could be stored directly, or it could be fed in an ammonia synthesis process. Finally, the decarbonized fuels (ammonia and/or hydrogen) are burned in the gas turbine to produce electricity with no greenhouse gases (GHG) emission. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of P2G2P system integration in a power plant. Different concepts have been applied to an existing ENGIE plant, based in Belgium, with the idea of installing all the technologies (electrolyzers, compressors, and storage, as well as ammonia fabrication units) on the power plant site. Simulations show that a considerable production time is needed to operate the plant for several hours using these e-fuels. Moreover, hydrogen storage requires an extremely huge footprint, hence it looks more reasonable to operate ammonia synthesis to store large quantities of decarbonized fuel, given the site space constraints. Additionally, Aspen plus models have been realized to evaluate the global efficiency of the P2G2P systems as well as the specific cooling requirements of the added technologies. The global efficiency for the P2H2P (with hydrogen) system is 32%. For the P2A2P (with pure ammonia) and power-to-amonia-to-hydrogen-to power (part of the produced ammonia is cracked to recover hydrogen, feeding the combustion chamber of the combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) with a blend of 70% NH3 and 30% H2) systems, this global efficiency is reduced, respectively, to 24% and 19%. From these results, it is thus apparent that there remain still several challenges that need to be overcome to make P2G2P an efficient way to decarbonize electricity production. These main challenges are: Increase the efficiency of the transformation processes to limit the energy losses; Enhance hydrogen storage technologies to limit the footprint or develop an efficient hydrogen distribution; Reduce the cost of P2G technologies and especially of PEM electrolyzers; Progress on decarbonized fuels combustion and specifically limit NOx emission for the NH3 firing configuration. The selection of component parameters plays an important role in the energy optimization of dual-motor drive electric buses (DMDEBs). To design a set of parameters that can be robust to different road slopes, passenger masses, and bus routes, a Taguchi-based robust design optimization method is proposed in this paper for DMDEBs. First, the dynamic programming (DP) is designed as a part of the Taguchi method to explore the optimal solution (electricity consumption) corresponding to each set of component parameters. Then, by taking the optimal electricity consumption obtained by DP as the response, the Taguchi method is utilized to find the robust component parameters that are insensitive to the noise factors. To evaluate the robustness and reliability of the designed component parameters, a six sigma analysis based on Monte Carlo sampling is employed considering three kinds of stochastic disturbances. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed robust design optimization method is effective and the designed component parameters have better robustness than the initial component parameters. In the near future, due to the growing share of variable renewable energy in the electricity mix and the lack of large-scale electricity storage, coal plants will have to shift their role from base-load operation to providing fluctuating back-up power. However, current coal power plants, based on steam Rankine cycle, are not optimized for flexible part-load operation, resulting in an intrinsic inadequacy for fast load variations. The founding idea of the H2020 sCO2-Flex project is to improve the flexibility of pulverized coal power plants by adopting supercritical CO2 Brayton power cycles. Despite the extensive literature about the design of sCO2 plants, there is still limited discussion about the strategies to be implemented to maximize system efficiency during part-load operation. This paper aims to provide deeper insight about the potential of sCO2 power plants based on recompressed cycle with high-temperature recuperator (HTR) bypass configuration for small modular coal power plants (25 MWel). Analysis focuses on both design and part-load operation providing a preliminary sizing of each component and comparing different operating strategies. Results demonstrate that sCO2 coal power plants can achieve competitive efficiency in both nominal and part-load operation thanks to the progressive increase of heat exchangers effectiveness. Moreover, they can be operated down to 20% electric load increasing power range of coal plants. Finally, the possibility to optimize the cycle minimum pressure ensures a safe operation of the compressor far from the surge line and to increase the performance at low load. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cycle humidification applied to micro gas turbines (mGTs) offers a solution to overcome their limited operational flexibility in terms of variable electrical and thermal power production when used in a combined heat and power (CHP) application. Although the positive impact of this cycle humidification on the performance has already been proven numerically and experimentally, very detailed modeling of the system performance remains challenging, especially the determination of the recuperator effectiveness, which has the highest impact on the final cycle performance. Indeed, the recuperator performance depends strongly on the mass flow rate of the air stream and its humidification level, two parameters that are difficult to measure accurately. Accurate modeling of the recuperator performance under both dry and humidified conditions is thus essential for correct assessment of the potential of humidified mGT cycles in decentralized energy systems (DESs). In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the recuperator performance under humidified conditions using averaged experimental data, extended with the application of a support vector regression (SVR) on a time series to improve noise-modeling of the output signal, and thus enhance the accuracy of the monitoring process. In a first step, the missing experimental parameters, air mass flow rate and humidity level, were obtained indirectly, using rotational speed, fuel flow rate, exhaust gas composition and pressure level measurements in combination with the compressor map. Despite the low accuracy, some general trends regarding the recuperator performance could be observed based on these experimental data, indicating that the recuperator, despite having an increased total exchanged heat flux, is actually too small to exploit the full potential of the humidification. In a second step, by means of the SVR model, a first attempt was made to improve the accuracy and reduce the scatter on the recuperator performance determination. The predicted results with the SVR indicated indeed a reduced scatter on the determinations of the air mass flow rate and the amount of introduced water, opening a pathway toward online recuperator performance prediction. This paper proposes three different methods to estimate the low-pressure cooled exhaust gas recirculation (LP-EGR) mass flow rate based on in-cylinder pressure measurements. The proposed LP-EGR models are designed with various combustion parameters (CP), which are derived from (1) heat release analysis, (2) central moment calculation, and (3) principal component analysis (PCA). The heat release provides valuable insights into the combustion process, such as flame speed and energy release. The central moment calculation enables quantitative representations of the shape characteristics in the cylinder pressure. The PCA also allows the extraction of the influential features through simple mathematical calculations. In this paper, these approaches focus on extracting the CP that are highly correlated to the diluent effects of the LP-EGR, and the parameters are used as the input states of the polynomial regression models. Moreover, in order to resolve the effects of cycle-to-cycle variations on the estimation results, a static model-based Kalman filter is applied to the CP for the practically usable estimation. The fast and precise performance of the proposed models was validated in real-time engine experiments under steady and transient conditions. The proposed LP-EGR mass flow model was demonstrated under a wide range of steady-states with an R² value over 0.98. Oxide particles have potential as robust heat transfer and thermal energy storage (TES) media for concentrating solar power (CSP). Particles of low-cost, inert oxides such as alumina and/or silica offer an effective, noncorrosive means of storing sensible energy at temperatures above 1000 °C. However, for TES subsystems coupled to high-efficiency, supercritical-CO2 cycles with low temperature differences for heat addition, the limited specific TES (in kJ kg-1) of inert oxides requires large mass flow rates for capture and total mass for storage. Alternatively, reactive oxides may provide higher specific energy storage (approaching 2 or more times the inert oxides) through adding endothermic reduction. Chemical energy storage through reduction can benefit from low oxygen partial pressures (PO2) sweep-gas flows that add complexity, cost, and balance of plant loads to the TES subsystem. This paper compares reactive oxides, with a focus on Sr-doped CaMnO3-δ perovskites, to low-cost alumina-silica particles for energy capture and storage media in CSP applications. For solar energy capture, an indirect particle receiver based on a narrow-channel, counterflow fluidized bed provides a framework for comparing the inert and reactive particles as a heat transfer media. Low-PO2 sweep gas flows for promoting reduction impact the techno-economic viability of TES subsystems based on reactive perovskites relative to those using inert oxide particles. Detailed information of the thermodynamic parameters, system performance, and operating behavior of aircraft auxiliary power units (APU) cycles is rarely available in literature. In order to set up numeric models and study cycle modifications, validation data with well-defined boundary conditions is needed. Thus, the paper introduces an APU test rig based on a Garrett GTCP36-28 with detailed instrumentation, which will be used in a further step as a demonstration platform for cycle modifications. The system is characterized in the complete feasible operating range by alternating bleed air load and electric power output. Furthermore, simulations of a validated numerical cycle model are utilized to predict the load points in the operating region which were unstable during measurements. The paper reports and discusses turbine shaft speed, compressor air mass flow, fuel mass flow, efficiencies, compressor outlet pressure and temperature, turbine inlet and outlet temperature as well as exhaust gas emissions. Furthermore, the results are discussed with respect to the difference compared to a Hamilton Sundstrand APS3200. Though the efficiencies of the GTCP36-28 are lower compared to the APS3200, the general behavior is in good agreement. In particular, the effects of separate compressors for load and power section are discussed in contrast to the GTCP36-28 system design comprising a single compressor. The dynamic modeling of energy systems can be used for different purposes, obtaining important information both for the design phase and control system strategies, increasing the confidence during experimental phase. Such analysis in dynamic conditions is generally performed considering fixed values for both geometrical and operational parameters such as volumes, orifices, but also initial temperatures, pressure. However, such characteristics are often subject to uncertainty, either because they are not known accurately or because they may depend on the operating conditions at the beginning of the relevant transient. With focus on a gas turbine fuel cell hybrid system (HS), compressor surge may or may not occur during transients, depending on the aforementioned cycle characteristics; hence, compressor surge events are affected by uncertainty. In this paper, a stochastic analysis was performed taking into account an emergency shut-down (ESD) in a fuel cell gas turbine HS, modeled with TRANSEO, a deterministic tool for the dynamic simulations. The aim of the paper is to identify the main parameters that impact on compressor surge margin. The stochastic analysis was performed through the response sensitivity analysis (RSA) method, a sensitivity-based approximation approach that overcomes the computational burden of sampling methods. The results show that the minimum surge margin occurs in two different ranges of rotational speed: a high-speed range and a low-speed range. The temperature and geometrical characteristics of the pressure vessel, where the fuel cell is installed, are the two main parameters that affect the surge margin during an emergency shut down. The paper presents a multidisciplinary approach for aero-thermal and heat transfer analysis for internal flows. The versatility and potential benefit offered by the approach are described through the application to a realistic low pressure turbine assembly. The computational method is based on a run time code-coupling architecture that allows mixed models and simulations to be integrated together for the prediction of the subsystem aero-thermal performance. In this specific application, the model is consisting of two rotor blades, the embedded vanes, the interstage cavity, and the solid parts. The geometry represents a real engine situation. The key element of the approach is the use of a fully modular coupling strategy that aims to combine (1) flexibility for design needs, (2) variable level of modeling for better accuracy, and (3) in memory code coupling for preserving computational efficiency in large system and subsystem simulations. For this particular example, Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved for the fluid regions and thermal coupling is enforced with the metal (conjugate heat transfer, CHT). Fluid-fluid interfaces use mixing planes between the rotating parts while overlapping regions are exploited to link the cavity flow to the main annulus flow as well as in the cavity itself for mapping of the metal parts and leakages. Metal temperatures predicted by the simulation are compared to those retrieved from a thermal model of the engine, and the results are discussed with reference to the underlying flow physics. When controlled in an open-loop fashion, both stationary and dynamical diesel engine performance can deteriorate due to disturbances. Although cycle-to-cycle fuel injection control has the potential of reducing the performance degradation by manipulating the fueling profile in real time, this potential has not been thoroughly studied. This is especially true for multipulse fuel injection, due to the lack of a controller design method with closed-loop reference tracking performance guarantees. In this paper, we introduce a systematic design method for multivariable cycle-to-cycle fuel injection control. The design method is based on several local linearizations to address varying combustion behavior due to different engine speeds, torques, and disturbances. This leads to a controller that is robust with respect to all the local linearizations. Experimental results show that the controller works well in both stationary and dynamical operating conditions, and has fast dynamical performance (settling time less than 1.5 (s)). Moreover, experimental data show that cycle-to-cycle fuel injection control is robust against the uncertainties introduced by disturbed rail pressure and swirl valve position. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the statistical uncertainty in long-term fatigue damage in offshore structures due to the short-term simulation length used in time domain analysis of stresses. The paper focuses on steel risers applications. A new simulation-based estimator for the variance of the short-term fatigue damage is presented. The proposed estimator is based on a variation of the original nonparametric bootstrap. It works with blocks of data instead of discrete values, in order to better account for the autocorrelation of the stress cycles in the stress time series. This versatile estimator can be applied in time-domain fatigue analyses to assess the variance of the fatigue damage using a single stress time series and does not require any previous assumptions on the stochastic stress process. Researchers often use mechanisms that consist of massless rods and concentrated masses in order to capture the dynamics of robotic locomotors. A kinematic prototyping tool that captures all possible locomotion modes of a given kinematic mechanism can be very useful in conceiving and designing such systems. Previously, we proposed a family of mechanisms that consist of two types of primitive building units: a single mass with a built-in revolute joint and a massless connection rod. This family starts from a single bouncing mass and progressively evolves into more complex generations. In this paper, we present a prototyping tool that generates all possible locomotion cycles of particle-based linear chain mechanisms. A new skip impact concept is introduced to describe the relative motion of the moving masses and the masses on the ground. The aim of this paper is to provide a novel stochastic life prediction approach capable of predicting the total fatigue life of applied uniaxial stress states from a reduced dataset reliably and efficiently. A previously developed strain energy-based fatigue life prediction method is integrated with the stochastic state space approach for prediction of total cycles to failure. The approach under consideration for this study is the Monte Carlo method (MCM) where input is randomly generated to approximate the output of highly complex systems. The strain energy fatigue life prediction method is used to first approximate SN behavior from a set of two SN data points. This process is repeated with another unique set of SN data points to evaluate and approximate distribution of cycles to failure at a given stress amplitude. Uniform, normal, log-normal, and Weibull distributions are investigated. From the MCM, fatigue data are sampled from the approximated distribution and an SN curve is generated to predict high cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior from low cycle fatigue (LCF) data. In this paper, an approach based on a liquid state machine (LSM) to compute the movement profiles to achieve a gait pattern subject to different variations in its trajectory is presented. At the same time, the position of the zero moment point (ZMP) to determine the stability of the six degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) bipedal robot in the sagittal plane during the gait cycle is calculated. The system is constructed as a supervised machine learning model. The time series of the oscillating foot trajectory obtained by direct kinematics with a multilayer perceptron neural network (MLP), to strengthen the kinematic model, is considered as input values for training. The target movement profiles are acquired of a human gait cycle analysis in three different scenarios: normal gait, climbing stairs, and descending stairs. In training, this model also gets the trajectories of the ZMP position during the gait cycle, as target time series. The LSM formed by spiking neurons, considered as third-generation neural networks, is compared in the accuracy of prediction, by the dynamic time warping (DTW) technique and correlation analysis, against the human gait analysis database. With this neuronal system, the joint positions to generate a trajectory of the oscillating foot and the ZMP position of the bipedal in the sagittal plane in different scenarios are obtained, proving the robustness of the LSM. Composite pistons are often used in heavy duty diesel engines due to its good reliability and durability. Owing to the alternating loads, fretting wear usually happens on the mating surfaces between piston crown and skirt. In this paper, a fretting wear finite element model is developed to analyze the mating surface wear of composite piston of heavy-duty diesel engine. The fretting wear model predicts the wear depth evolution for each working cycle based on Archard model and mesh updating technique, which is validated by previous pin and disk contact experiments. The wear evolution of the top contact surface of piston skirt is simulated according to engine operating condition, and fretting wear life is estimated by the decreasing process of crown-skirt connecting bolt preload. Effects of the shape of piston skirt top surface are also evaluated. In the end, the rationality of fretting wear model is validated by durability tests of diesel engine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For an internal combustion engine, a large quantity of fuel energy (accounting for approximately 30% of the total combustion energy) is expelled through the exhaust without being converted into useful work. Various technologies including turbocompounding and the pressurized Brayton bottoming cycle have been developed to recover the exhaust heat and thus reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emission. However, the application of these approaches in small automotive power plants has been relatively less explored because of the inherent difficulties, such as the detrimental backpressure and higher complexity imposed by the additional devices. Therefore, research has been conducted, in which modifications were made to the traditional arrangement aiming to minimize the weaknesses. The turbocharger of the baseline series turbocompounding was eliminated from the system so that the power turbine became the only heat recovery device on the exhaust side of the engine, and operated at a higher expansion ratio. The compressor was separated from the turbine shaft and mechanically connected to the engine via continuous variable transmission (CVT). According to the results, the backpressure of the novel system is significantly reduced comparing with the series turbocompounding model. The power output at lower engine speed was also promoted. For the pressurized Brayton bottoming cycle, rather than transferring the thermal energy from the exhaust to the working fluid, the exhaust gas was directly utilized as the working medium and was simply cooled by ambient coolant before the compressor. This arrangement, which is known as the inverted Brayton cycle (IBC) was simpler to implement. Besides, it allowed the exhaust gasses to be expanded below the ambient pressure. Thereby, the primary cycle was less compromised by the bottoming cycle. The potential of recovering energy from the exhaust was increased as well. This paper analyzed and optimized the parameters (including CVT ratio, turbine and compressor speed and the inlet pressure to the bottoming cycle) that are sensitive to the performance of the small vehicle engine equipped with inverted Brayton cycle and novel turbocompounding system, respectively. The performance evaluation was given in terms of brake power output and specific fuel consumption. Two working conditions, full and partial load (10 and 2 bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP)) were investigated. Evaluation of the transient performance was also carried out. Simulated results of these two designs were compared with each other as well as the performance from the corresponding baseline models. The need for less fuel consumption and the trend of higher level of autonomy together urge the power optimization in multihybrid autonomous vehicles. Both the multivehicle coordination control and the hybrid powertrain energy management should be optimized to maximize fuel savings. In this paper, we intend to have a computationally efficient framework to optimize them individually and then evaluate the overall control performance. The optimization is conducted in series. First is at the multivehicle system's level where the distributed locally optimal solution is given for vehicles with nonlinear dynamics. Second, the powertrain management optimization is conducted at the hybrid powertrain level. We provide an analytical formulation of the powertrain optimization for each hybrid vehicle by using Pontryagin's minimum principle (PMP). By approximating the optimal instantaneous fuel consumption rate as a polynomial of the engine speed, we can formulate the optimization problem into a set of algebraic equations, which enables the computationally efficient real-time implementation. To justify the applicability of the methodology in real-time, we give directions on numerical iterative solutions for these algebraic equations. The analysis on the stability of the method is shown through statistical analysis. Finally, further simulations are given to confirm the efficacy and the robustness of the proposed optimal approach. This paper presents a study of the energy-efficient operation of all-electric vehicles leveraging route information, such as road grade, to adjust the velocity trajectory. First, Pontryagin's maximum principle (PMP) is applied to derive necessary conditions and to determine the possible operating modes. The analysis shows that only five modes are required to achieve minimum energy consumption: full propulsion, cruising, coasting, full regeneration, and full regeneration with conventional braking. Then, the minimum energy consumption problem is reformulated and solved in the distance domain using dynamic programming to find the optimal speed profiles. Various simulation results are shown for a lightweight autonomous military vehicle. The sensitivity of energy consumption to regenerative-braking power limits and trip time is investigated. Prediction of residual stresses induced by any additive layer manufacturing process greatly helps in preventing thermal cracking and distortion formed in the substrate and deposition material. This paper presents the development of a model for the prediction of residual stresses using three-dimensional finite element simulation (3D-FES) and their experimental validation in a single-track and double-track deposition of Ti-6Al-4V powder on AISI 4130 substrate by the microplasma transferred arc (µ-PTA) powder deposition process. It involved 3D-FES of the temperature distribution and thermal cycles that were validated experimentally using three K-type thermocouples mounted along the deposition direction. Temperature distribution, thermal cycles, and residual stresses are predicted in terms of the µ-PTA process parameters and temperature-dependent properties of substrate and deposition materials. Influence of a number of deposition tracks on the residual stresses is also studied. Results reveal that (i) tensile residual stress is higher at the bonding between the deposition and substrate and attains a minimum value at the midpoint of a deposition track; (ii) maximum tensile residual stress occurs in the substrate material at its interface with deposition track. This primarily causes distortion and thermal cracks; (iii) maximum compressive residual stress occurs approximately at mid-height of the substrate material; and (iv) deposition of a subsequent track relieves tensile residual stress induced by the previously deposited track. Dual-fuel engines can achieve high efficiencies and low emissions but also can encounter high cylinder-to-cylinder variations on multicylinder engines. In order to avoid these variations, they require a more complex method for combustion phasing control such as model-based control. Since the combustion process in these engines is complex, typical models of the system are complex as well and there is a need for simpler, computationally efficient, control-oriented models of the dual-fuel combustion process. In this paper, a mean-value combustion phasing model is designed and calibrated, and two control strategies are proposed. Combustion phasing is predicted using a knock integral model (KIM), burn duration (BD) model, and a Wiebe function, and this model is used in both an adaptive closed loop controller and an open loop controller. These two control methodologies are tested and compared in simulations. Both control strategies are able to reach steady-state in five cycles after a transient and have steady-state errors in CA50 that are less than ±0.1 CA deg (CAD) with the adaptive control strategy and less than ±1.5 CAD with the model-based feedforward control method. This paper develops a new computational approach for energy management in a hydraulic hybrid vehicle. The developed algorithm, called approximate stochastic differential dynamic programming (ASDDP) is a variant of the classic differential dynamic programming algorithm. The simulation results are discussed for two Environmental Protection Agency drive cycles and one real world cycle based on collected data. Flexibility of the ASDDP algorithm is demonstrated as real-time driver behavior learning, and forecasted road grade information are incorporated into the control setup. Ammonia storage nonuniformity has a significant impact on the emission reduction performance of urea-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. In this paper, a unique SCR platform with two catalysts in a parallel configuration was created for investigating the impact of ammonia storage nonuniformity on the emission reduction performance in a simulation environment. The established two-cell SCR platform allows users to independently control the ammonia-to-NOx ratio (ANR) for each catalyst using two independent urea solution injectors. Simulation results over US06 cycle demonstrate that, compared to the case without ammonia storage nonuniformity, the tailpipe NOx and ammonia emissions can be increased by 6.73% and 22.0%, respectively, due to the nonuniform ammonia storage in the case of an ANR nonuniformity index (NUI) at 0.2. Furthermore, an innovative model-based method was proposed for estimating the ammonia coverage ratio nonuniformity (i.e., ammonia storage nonuniformity if storage capacity is known) by utilizing a control-oriented SCR model and the tailpipe NOx and ammonia measurements at the confluence point. Trochoidal (TR) tool paths have been a popular means in high-speed machining for slot cutting, owing to its unique way of cyclically advancing the tool to avoid the situation of a full tool engagement angle suffered by the conventional type of slot cutting. However, advantageous in lowering the tool engagement angle, they sacrifice in machining efficiency--to limit the tool engagement angle, the step distance has to be carefully controlled, thus resulting in a much longer total machining time. Toward the objective of improving the machining efficiency, in this paper, we propose a new type of TR tool path for milling an arbitrary curved slot. For our new type of TR tool path, within each TR cycle, rather than moving circularly, the tool moves in a particular way such that the material removal rate is maximized while the given maximum engagement angle is fully respected. While this type of TR tool path works perfectly only for circular slots (including straight ones), by means of an adaptive decomposition and then a novel iso-arc-length mapping scheme, it is successfully applied to any general arbitrarily curved slot. Our experiments have confirmed that, when compared with the conventional TR tool paths, the proposed new type of TR tool path is able to significantly reduce the total machining time by as much as 25%, without sacrificing the tool wear. Commonality, or the use of the same components among products in a product family, has been considered an effective approach to design a product family. By implementing commonality, a firm can reduce the number of distinct components, component inventory, and inventory cost. However, product design may change and product cost may increase due to using common components that may require different interface conditions and be more expensive than the initially considered components. While the benefits and challenges are well recognized, simultaneous optimization of commonality, product family design, and inventory decisions has not been comprehensively studied. In this paper, we present an approach to integrate commonality, product family design, and inventory decisions by incorporating inventory-related costs in the profit formula. In the proposed approach, (1) commonality matrix is defined to assign product demands to components and component costs to products, (2) continuous inventory review policy is used to calculate safety inventory, (3) joint ordering is implemented to calculate inventory-replenishment lot size and cycle inventory, and (4) cycle service level (CSL) and expected number of component shortage per replenishment cycle (ESC) are utilized to calculate inventory-understock costs. The design of three beverage containers is used as an illustrative example to demonstrate the proposed approach, and sensitivity analysis is performed to contrast commonality and product family design of the three beverage containers with and without incorporating inventory decisions. With the current shift from centralized to more decentralized power production, new opportunities arise for small-scale combined heat and power (CHP) production units like micro gas turbines (mGTs). However, to fully embrace these opportunities, the current mGT technology has to become more flexible in terms of operation--decoupling the heat and power production in CHP mode--and in terms of fuel utilization--showing flexibility in the operation with different lower heating value (LHV) fuels. Cycle humidification, e.g., by performing steam injection, is a possible route to handle these problems. Current simulation models are able to correctly assess the impact of humidification on the cycle performance, but they fail to provide detailed information on the combustion process. To fully quantify the potential of cycle humidification, more advanced numerical models--preferably validated--are necessary. These models are not only capable of correctly predicting the cycle performance, but they can also handle the complex chemical kinetics in the combustion chamber. In this paper, we compared and validated such a model with a typical steady-state model of the steam injected mGT cycle based on the Turbec T100. The advanced one is an in-house MATLAB model, based on the NIST database for the characterization of the properties of the gaseous compounds with the combustion mechanisms embedded according to the Gri-MEch 3.0 library. The validation one was constructed using commercial software (Aspen Plus), using the more advance Redlich-Kwong-Soave (RKS)- Boston-Mathias(BM) property method and assuming complete combustion by using a Gibbs reactor. Both models were compared considering steam injection in the compressor outlet or in the combustion chamber, focusing only on the global cycle performance. Simulation results of the steam injection cycle fueled with natural gas and syngas showed some differences between the two presented models (e.g., 5.9% on average for the efficiency increase over the simulated steam injection rates at nominal power output for injection in the compressor outlet); however, the general trends that could be observed are consistent. Additionally, the numerical results of the injection in the compressor outlet were also validated with steam-injection experiments in a Turbec T100, indicating that the advanced MATLAB model overestimates the efficiency improvement by 25-45%. The results show the potential of simulating the humidified cycle using more advanced models; however, in future work, special attention should be paid to the experimental tuning of the model parameters in general and the recuperator performance in particular to allow correct assessment of the cycle performance. The production stage of a product's life cycle can significantly contribute to its overall environmental impact. Estimates of environmental impact for a product are typically produced using life cycle assessment (LCA) methods. These methods rely on life cycle inventory (LCI) data containing impact estimates of manufacturing processes and other operations that contribute to a product's creation. The accuracy of LCI data is critical for quality assessments; however, these data are often insufficient in the types and varieties of manufacturing processes covered and are often only a coarse estimate of actual impacts. At the same time, much manufacturing research focuses on how to model, measure, assess, and reduce the environmental impacts of manufacturing processes. Recent standards emerging from ASTM International define a structured format for presenting these studies in a reusable way. In this paper, we investigate the potential for using the ASTM E3012-16 format to generate LCI datasets suitable to perform LCA by mapping from the ASTM standard into the widely adopted ecoSpold2 format. This paper presents a novel design for a test platform to determine the state of health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The SOH is a key parameter of a battery energy storage system and its estimation remains a challenging issue. The batteries that have been tested are 18,650 Li-ion cells as they are the most commonly used batteries on the market. The test platform design is detailed from the building of the charging and discharging circuitry to the software. Data acquired from the testing circuitry are stored and displayed in LabVIEW to obtain the charging and discharging curves. The resulting graphs are compared to the outcome predicted by the battery datasheets, to verify that the platform delivers coherent values. The SOH of the battery is then calculated using a Coulomb counting method in LabVIEW. The batteries will be discharged through various types of resistive circuits, and the differences in the resulting curves will be discussed. A single battery cell will also be tested over 30 cycles and the decrease in the SOH will be clearly identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Steady-state simulation is an important method to investigate thermodynamic processes. This is especially true for innovative micro gas turbine (MGT)-based cycles as the complexity of such systems grows. Therefore, steady-state simulation tools are required that ensure large flexibility and computation robustness. As the increased system complexity result often in more extensive parameter studies also a fast computation speed is required. While a number of steady-state simulation tools for MGT-based systems are described and applied in literature, the solving process of such tools is rarely explained. However, this solving process is crucial to achieve a robust and fast computation within a physically meaningful range. Therefore, a new solver routine for a steady-state simulation tool developed at the DLR Institute of Combustion Technology is presented in detail in this paper. The solver routine is based on Broyden's method. It considers boundaries during the solving process to maintain a physically and technically meaningful solution process. Supplementary methods are implemented and described which improve the computation robustness and speed. Furthermore, some features of the resulting steady-state simulation tool are presented. Exemplary applications of a hybrid power plant (HyPP), an inverted Brayton cycle (IBC), and an aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) show the capabilities of the presented solver routine and the steady-state simulation tool. The internal combustion Rankine cycle (ICRC) engine utilizes pure oxygen as the oxidant instead of air during combustion to prevent the generation of nitrogen oxide emissions and lower the cost of CO2 recovery. To control combustion intensity and increase efficiency, water injection technology is implemented as it can increase the in-cylinder working fluid during combustion process. To further enhance the system thermal efficiency, the injected water is heated using coolant and waste heat before being directly injected into combustion chamber. The main challenge of controlling the ICRC engine is the interaction between water injection process and combustion stability. Ion current detection provides a potential solution of real-time detection of in-cylinder combustion status and water injection process simultaneously. In this paper, the characteristics of ion current signal in an ICRC engine were studied. The results indicate the ion current signal is primarily affected by the combination of trapped water vapor injected in the last cycle and in-cylinder combustion intensity. The water vapor contributes to the ionization reactions, which lead to enhanced ion current signals under water cycle. The ion current signal is capable of reflecting the operating conditions of the in-cylinder water injector. The phase of the ion current peak value has a linear relation as the water injection timing is delayed, and ion current detection technology has the potential to detect the combustion phase under different engine loads in an internal combustion Rankine cycle engine. Integrated gasification humid air turbine (IGHAT) cycle is an advanced power generation system, combining gasification technology and humid air turbine (HAT) cycle. It draws great attention in the energy field considering its high specific power, high efficiency, and low emission. There are only a few HAT cycle plants and IGHAT cycle is still on the theory research stage. Therefore, the study on control strategies of IGHAT cycle has great significance in the future development of this system. A design method of control strategy is proposed for the unknown gas turbine systems. The control strategy design is summarized after IGHAT control strategy and logic is designed based on the dynamic simulation results and the operation experience of gas turbine power station preliminarily. Then, control logic is configured and a virtual control system of IGHAT cycle is established on the Ovation distribution control platform. The model-in-loop control platform is eventually set up based on the interaction between the simulation model and the control system. A case study is implemented on this model-in-loop control platform to demonstrate its feasibility in the practical industry control system. The simulation of the fuel switching control mode and the power control mode is analyzed. The power in IGHAT cycle is increased by 24.12% and 32.47%, respectively, compared to the ones in the simple cycle and the regenerative cycle. And the efficiency of IGHAT cycle is 1.699% higher than that of the regenerative cycle. Low component efficiency caused by off-design performance and low humidity caused by high pressure are the main limits for system performance. A detailed look at the gas turbine (GT) technology over the last three decades clearly shows that an asymptotic limit is reached in thermal efficiency in combined cycle (CC) configuration. There is little reason to expect a technology leap anytime soon to change this appreciably as long as the industry sticks to the classic Brayton cycle configuration and the brute force approach of ever higher turbine inlet temperatures (TITs). The changing landscape of electric power generation, especially integration of fossil fuel fired technologies with renewable generation and wide variation in natural gas prices, suggests that it is time to look at the direction of future development efforts differently. This paper presents a method to achieve high deformability levels in dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) by applying a modulated voltage waveform. The method relies on supplying the electrostatic energy during the specific phase of the oscillation cycle, resulting in the enhanced travel range at a relatively low driving voltage. We consider a standard sandwich configuration of the DE actuator with neo-Hookean material model and outline an energy-based approach for delineating the underlying principles of the proposed method. A comparison of the deformability levels achieved using the quasi-static, Heaviside step, and the modulated input waveforms is presented. Significant reduction in instability voltages together with a considerable increase in the stable actuation limit is observed in the case of the modulated voltage input. The estimates of the stability thresholds are validated by integrating the equation of motion obtained using Hamilton's principle. The effect of energy dissipation is assessed by considering variations in the quality factor. Further, a qualitative comparison with experimental observations is presented highlighting the practical feasibility of the method. Harnessing reversible snap-through of a dielectric elastomer (DE), which is a mechanism for large deformation provided by an electromechanical instability, for large-volume pumping has proven to be feasible. However, the output volume of snap-through pumping is drastically reduced by adverse pressure gradient, and large-volume pumping under high adverse pressure gradient by a DE pump has not been realized. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism of DE fluid pumping that can address this shortcoming by connecting DE pumps of different membrane stiffnesses serially in a pumping circuit and by harnessing synergistic interactions between neighboring pump units. We build a simple serial DE pump to verify the concept, which consists of two DE membranes. By adjusting the membrane stiffness appropriately, a synergistic effect is observed, where the snap-through of membrane 1 triggers the snap-through of membrane 2, ensuring that a large volume (over 70 ml/cycle) can be achieved over a wide range of large adverse pressure gradients. In comparison, the conventional single DE pump's pumping volume rapidly decreased beyond a low adverse pressure gradient of 0.196 kPa. At the pressure difference of 0.98 kPa, the serial DE pump's pumping volume is 4185.1% larger than that of the conventional DE pump. This pumping mechanism is customizable for various pressure ranges and enables a new approach to design DE-based soft pumping devices such as a DE total artificial heart, which requires large-volume pumping over a wide range of pressure difference. Testing of components at higher-than-nominal stress level provides an effective way of reducing the required testing effort for system reliability assessment. Due to various reasons, not all components are directly testable in practice. The missing information of untestable components poses significant challenges to the accurate evaluation of system reliability. This paper proposes a sequential accelerated life testing (SALT) design framework for system reliability assessment of systems with untestable components. In the proposed framework, system-level tests are employed in conjunction with component-level tests to effectively reduce the uncertainty in the system reliability evaluation. To minimize the number of system-level tests, which are much more expensive than the component-level tests, the accelerated life testing (ALT) design is performed sequentially. In each design cycle, testing resources are allocated to component-level or system-level tests according to the uncertainty analysis from system reliability evaluation. The component-level or system-level testing information obtained from the optimized testing plans is then aggregated to obtain the overall system reliability estimate using Bayesian methods. The aggregation of component-level and system-level testing information allows for an effective uncertainty reduction in the system reliability evaluation. Most tough hydrogels suffer accumulated damages under cyclic loads. The damages may stem from breakage of covalent bonds, unzipping of ionic crosslinks, or desorption of polymer chains from nanoparticle surfaces. Recent experiments report that when a tough hydrogel is subject to cyclic loads, the stress-stretch curves of tough hydrogels change cycle by cycle and approach a steady-state after thousands of cycles, denoted as the shakedown phenomenon. In this paper, we develop a phenomenological model to describe the shakedown of tough hydrogels under prolonged cyclic loads for the first time. We specify a new evolution law of damage variable in multiple cycles, motivated by the experimental observations. We synthesize nanocomposite hydrogels and conduct the cyclic tests. Our model fits the experimental data remarkably well, including the features of Mullins effect, residual stretch and shakedown. Our model is capable of predicting the stress-stretch behavior of subsequent thousands of cycles by using the fitting parameters from the first and second cycle. We further apply the model to polyacrylamide (PAAM)/poly(2-acrylanmido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) and PAAM/alginate double-network hydrogels. Good agreement between theoretical prediction and experimental data is also achieved. The model is hoped to serve as a tool to probe the complex nature of tough hydrogels, through cyclic loads. Micro gas turbines (mGTs) offer several advantages for small-scale combined heat and power (CHP) production compared to their main competitors, the internal combustion engines (ICEs), such as low vibration level, cleaner exhaust, and less maintenance. The major drawback is their lower electrical efficiency, which makes them economically less attractive and explains their low market penetration. Next to improving the efficiency of the components of the traditional recuperated mGT, shifting toward more innovative cycles may help enhancing the performance and the flexibility of mGTs. One interesting solution is the introduction of water in the mGT cycle--either as auto-raised steam or hot liquid--preheated with the waste heat from the exhaust gases. The so-called humidification of the mGT cycle has the potential of increasing the electrical performance and flexibility of the mGT, resulting in a higher profitability. However, despite the proven advantages of mGT humidification, only few of these engines have been experimentally tested and up to now, no cycle is commercially available. With this paper, we give a comprehensive review of the literature on research and development of humidified mGTs: we examine the effect of humidification both on the improvement of the cycle efficiency and flexibility and on the performance of the specific mGT components. Additionally, we will present the different possible layouts, both focusing on the numerical and experimental work. Finally, we pinpoint the technological challenges that need to be overcome for humidified mGTs to be viable. In conclusion, humidification of mGT cycles offers great potential for enhancing the cycle's electrical efficiency and flexibility, but further research is necessary to make the technology commercially available. An exergy framework was developed taking into consideration a detailed analysis of the heat exchanger (HEX) (intercooler (IC)) component irreversibilities. Moreover, it was further extended to include an adequate formulation for closed systems, e.g., a secondary cycle (SC), moving with the aircraft. Afterward, the proposed framework was employed to study two radical intercooling concepts. The first proposed concept uses already available wetted surfaces, i.e., nacelle surfaces, to reject the core heat and contributes to an overall drag reduction. The second concept uses the rejected core heat to power a secondary organic Rankine cycle and produces useful power to the aircraft-engine system. Both radical concepts are integrated into a high bypass ratio (BPR) turbofan engine, with technology levels assumed to be available by year 2025. A reference intercooled cycle incorporating a HEX in the bypass (BP) duct is established for comparison. Results indicate that the radical intercooling concepts studied in this paper show similar performance levels to the reference cycle. This is mainly due to higher irreversibility rates created during the heat exchange process. A detailed assessment of the irreversibility contributors, including the considered HEXs and SC, is made. This paper presents an improved speed estimator for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). It focuses on hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The speed estimator is based on reactive power model reference adaptive system (Q-MRAS). The MRAS parameters are tuned using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. The proposed method has been experimentally verified with a 100 kW, 5000 rpm PMSM, and a good agreement between the measured speed and the estimated speed is found. Slender turbine blades are susceptible to excitation. Resulting vibrations stress the blade's fixture to the rotor or stator. In this paper, high cycle fatigue at the edge of contact (EOC) between blade and rotor/stator of such fixtures is investigated both experimentally and numerically. Plasticity in the contact zone and its effects on, e.g., contact tractions, fatigue determinative quantities, and fatigue itself are shown to be of considerable relevance. The accuracy of the finite element analysis (FEA) is demonstrated by comparing the predicted utilizations and slip region widths with data gained from tests. For the evaluation of EOC fatigue, tests on simple notched specimens provide the limit data. Predictions on the utilization are made for the EOC of a dovetail setup. Tests with this setup provide the experimental fatigue limit to be compared to. The comparisons carried out show a good agreement between the experimental results and the plasticity-based calculations of the demonstrated approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycles are an efficient and potentially cost-effective method of capturing CO2 from fossil-fueled power plants. These cycles combust natural gas or syngas with oxygen in a high pressure (200-300 bar), heavily diluted sCO2 environment. The cycle thermal efficiency is significantly impacted by the proximity of the operating conditions to the CO2 critical point (31 °C, 73.7 bar) as well as to the level of working fluid dilution by minor components, thus it is crucial to correctly model the appropriate thermophysical properties of these sCO2 mixtures. These properties are also important for determining how water is removed from the cycle and for accurate modeling of the heat exchange within the recuperator. This paper presents a quantitative evaluation of ten different property methods that can be used for modeling direct sCO2 cycles in Aspen Plus®. Reference fluid thermodynamic and transport properties (REFPROP) is used as the de facto standard for analyzing high-purity indirect sCO2 systems, however, the addition of impurities due to the open nature of the direct sCO2 cycle introduces uncertainty to the REFPROP predictions as well as species that REFPROP cannot model. Consequently, a series of comparative analyses were performed to identify the best physical property method for use in Aspen Plus® for direct-fired sCO2 cycles. These property methods are assessed against several mixture property measurements and offer a relative comparison to the accuracy obtained with REFPROP. The Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility (NZERTF) was designed to be approximately 60% more energy efficient than homes meeting the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code requirements. The thermal envelope minimizes heat loss/gain through the use of advanced framing and enhanced insulation. A continuous air/moisture barrier resulted in an air exchange rate of 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 Pa. The home incorporates a vast array of extensively monitored renewable and energy efficient technologies including an air-to-air heat pump system with a dedicated dehumidification cycle; a ducted heat-recovery ventilation (HRV) system; a whole house dehumidifier; a photovoltaic system; and a solar domestic hot water system. During its first year of operation, the NZERTF produced an energy surplus of 1023 kWh. Based on observations during the first year, changes were made to determine if further improvements in energy performance could be obtained. The changes consisted of installing a thermostat that incorporated control logic to minimize the use of auxiliary heat, using a whole house dehumidifier in lieu of the heat pump's dedicated dehumidification cycle, and reducing the ventilation rate to a value that met but did not exceed code requirements. During the second year of operation, the NZERTF produced an energy surplus of 2241 kWh. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) applied to in-cylinder surfaces of a low temperature combustion (LTC) engine provide an opportunity for enhanced efficiency via two mechanisms: (i) positive impact on thermodynamic cycle efficiency due to combustion/expansion heat loss reduction, and (ii) enhanced combustion efficiency. Heat released during combustion increases the temperature gradient within the TBC layer, elevating surface temperature over combustion-relevant crank angles. Thorough characterization of this dynamic temperature "swing" at the TBC-gas interface is required to ensure accurate determination of heat transfer and the associated impact(s) on engine performance, emissions, and efficiencies. This paper employs an inverse heat conduction solver based on the sequential function specification method (SFSM) to estimate TBC surface temperature and heat flux profiles using sub-TBC temperature measurements. The authors first assess the robustness of the solution methodology ex situ, utilizing an inert, quiescent environment and a known heat flux boundary condition. The inverse solver is extended in situ to evaluate surface thermal phenomena within a TBC-treated single-cylinder, gasoline-fueled, homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. The resultant analysis provides crank angle resolved TBC surface temperature and heat flux profiles over a host of operational conditions. Insight derived from this work may be correlated with TBC thermophysical properties to determine the impact(s) of material selection on engine performance, emissions, heat transfer, and efficiencies. This paper describes a model-based feedback control method to transition from spark ignition (SI) to homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion in gasoline engines. The purpose of the control structure is to improve robustness and reduce calibration complexity by incorporating feedback of the engine variables into nonlinear model-based calculations that inherently generalize across operating points. This type of structure is sought as an alternative to prior SI-HCCI transition approaches that involve open-loop calibration of input command sequences that must be scheduled by operating condition. The control architecture is designed for cam switching type SI-HCCI mode transition strategies with practical two-stage cam profile hardware, which previously have only been investigated in a purely open-loop framework. Experimental results on a prototype engine show that the control architecture is able to carry out SI-HCCI transitions across the HCCI load range at 2000 rpm engine speed while requiring variation of only one major set point and three minor set points with operating condition. These results suggest a noteworthy improvement in controller generality and ease of calibration relative to previous SI-HCCI transition approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Consumers might be willing to repair their broken devices as long as the associated repair costs do not exceed an undesirable threshold. However, in many cases, the technological obsolescence actuates consumers to retire old devices and replace them with new ones rather than extending the product lifecycle through repair. In this paper, we aim to investigate the impact of components' deterioration profiles and consumers' repair decisions on the lifespan of devices, and then assesse the anticipated life cycle environmental impacts. A Monte Carlo simulation is developed to estimate the life cycle characteristics such as the average lifespan, the number of failed components' replacement, and the total repair cost per cycle for a laptop computer. The lifecycle characteristics estimated from simulation model further have been used in a life cycle assessment (LCA) study to quantify the environmental impact associated with different design scenarios. The results reveal the impact of product design as well as consumers' repair decisions on the product lifespan and the corresponding environmental impacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
