This paper presents a unified physics-based insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) compact model for circuit simulation that predicts the performance of both Si and SiC, n- and p-channel devices. The model can predict the detailed switching waveforms of these technologies based on its charge-based formulation. Further, this compact IGBT model is presented alongside a unique datasheet-driven parameter extraction process. The parameter extraction process enables users to quickly extract model parameters from data typically published without the need of taking physical measurements. The model has been validated with both Si and SiC devices for static and dynamic characteristics. The SiC IGBTs used for validation are a 12.5-kV n-channel device and a 13-kV p-channel device, while the Si IGBT chosen was IXDH30N120 from IXYS Corp. (Milpitas, CA, USA). This is the only IGBT model that predicts the performance of both n- and p-channel, Si and SiC devices, providing more freedom for the development of complex power electronics circuit designs. The convergence of the model has been verified by implementing a complex circuit consisting of both a dc–dc converter and a dc–ac inverter. The results presented here show that the unified model can be used to describe the behavior of a wide range of Si and SiC IGBT circuits. The American automobile industry is facing substantial environmental and energy challenges driving the pursuit of alternative powertrain technologies—“The intervening mechanism by which power is transmitted from an engine to a propeller or axle that it drives,” which nominally includes engine, transmission, drive shafts, differentials, and the final drive. Emerging alternative fuel vehicles are showing their potential to address these challenges. However, diffusion of new technologies has many complications. This paper uses system dynamics modeling to investigate the impacts of individual and organizational parameters. This model embeds two traditional modeling methods for technology adoption, the Bass diffusion model and multinomial logit regression method. Five types of powertrain systems and three major stakeholders are considered. Mathematical relationships among different variables are elaborated. The qualitative impacts of government feebate, manufacturer willingness, and consumer purchasing preferences on economic and environmental issues are addressed using scenario analysis. This paper proposes a new framework in calculating the ex post prices for the spot electricity market. The proposed method finds a set of prices that are as consistent as possible with the actual outputs of resources correctly following their dispatch instructions. Two alternative consistency metrics are proposed in the paper. One measures the difference between the actual performance of an individual resource and its bid-based profit-maximizing response to the ex post prices in a perfectly competitive market. Another measures the difference between the ex post price and the price that supports the actual response of an individual resource. Compared to the existing approaches adopted in the real-time electricity markets in the U.S., the proposed method solves the ex post energy and ancillary service prices directly and simultaneously. It does not require heuristics that are hard to justify, and has a much clear definition for the pricing problem than the existing approaches do. Moreover, the proposed approach is flexible in the price control required by the market operators. Numerical examples are presented to further demonstrate the validity of this approach. As the number of combined-cycle units increases, efficient modeling approaches for these units play important roles for independent system operators (ISOs). Based on various combinations of combustion turbines (CTs) and steam turbines (STs), the combined-cycle unit could work at different configurations (modes) with different efficiencies. In this paper, we propose an edge-based formulation for the combined-cycle units in the unit commitment problem to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of current modeling approaches. Our formulation can 1) clearly describe the transition processes among different configurations so as to satisfy the ISO financial offer submission requirements and (2) capture physical constraints of each turbine, including the exact min-up/down time and time dependent startup cost, in the combined-cycle units so as to increase the operational flexibility while ensuring system feasibility. This model fits well with the current U.S. deregulated electricity market. The final numerical studies show that our approaches perform better than the current configuration-based modeling approach. Background: Food tax-subsidy policies are proposed to hold promise for helping to produce healthier patterns of food purchasing and consumption at population level. Evidence for their effects derives largely from simulation studies that explore the potential effects of untried policies using a mathematical modelling framework. This paper provides a critique first of the nature of the evidence derived from such simulation studies, and second of the challenges of cumulating that evidence to inform public health policy. Discussion: Effects estimated by simulation studies of food taxes and subsidies can be expected to diverge in potentially important ways from those that would accrue in practice because these models are simplified, typically static, representations of complex adaptive systems. The level of confidence that can be placed in modelled estimates of effects is correspondingly low, and the level of associated uncertainty is high. Moreover, evidence from food tax-subsidy simulation studies cannot meaningfully be cumulated using currently available quantitative evidence synthesis methods, to reduce uncertainty about effects. Summary: Simulation studies are critical for the initial phases of an incremental research process, for drawing together diverse evidence and exploring potential longer-term effects. While simulation studies of food taxes and subsidies provide a valuable and necessary input to the formulation of public health policy in this area, they are unlikely to be sufficient, and policy makers should not place excessive reliance on evidence from such studies, either singly or cumulatively. To reflect known and unknown limitations of the models, results of such studies should be interpreted cautiously as tentative projections. Interconnection wide electric transmission system has been envisioned to facilitate the growth of renewable energy, enhance reliability, improve system operating efficiency, and reduce emissions. In this paper, we propose an explicit planning approach for transmission design at the national level. It has been applied to the U.S. system to design transmission overlays for multiple future generation scenarios. Human life expectancy has risen in most developed countries over several decades, causing observed demographic shifts. Many researchers have developed models to determine the expectancy of life at birth. Yet due to the complexity of the real-world mortality data, and recent global economy impacts, there is a great demand to search for new models to accurately predict the life expectancy, especially in the United States. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of mortality rate in the United States over a period of six decades (data from 1946 to 2005) with considerations of the six most common distribution functions in the mortality area. These functions are: Gompertz, Gompertz-Makeham, logistic, log logistic, loglog, and Weibull. Given complex mortality data, we develop models including algorithms to compute the mortality measures such as mortality rate, and then select the best function for predicting the life expectancy in the United States. The modeling results include life expectancy at birth, life expectancy at each age, mortality rate, and forecasting models. We also discuss a new risk-cost function with respect to life expectancy, and determine the optimal threshold lifetime level that maximizes the expected risk cost. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the expected risk-cost results. The proposed risk-cost optimization model, and the optimal lifetime threshold value can help the policy-decision makers of related healthcare organizations including insurance companies to carefully perform the tradeoff between the cost and benefits. This approach can affect both short term and long term related healthcare policies and plans. The results show that the logistic distribution uniquely out performs other distributions based on the mean square error criterion. We find that on average the life expectancy at birth in the United States in 2005 for both sexes, males, and females are 84.0, 81.9, and 84.6 years, respectively. This new result shows that the true life expectancy on average in the U.S. is significantly larger than in existing reports. Life expectancy obviously changes as one will get older. By late adulthood, a person's chances of living longer increase as is reflected by the life expectancy function. For example, although the life expectancy from birth in the United States in 2005 is 84.0 years, those who live to age 65 will have an average of 20.4 additional years left to live, making their life expectancy almost 85.4 years. Similarly, those who live to age 75 will gain an additional few years, making their life expectancy almost 87.6 years. On average, a child who will be born in the US in 2015 can expect to live 85.5 years, and in 2025 a child born can expect to live nearly 87 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A magnetohydrodynamic model of irradiating Z-pinch is the basis of a 2-D (in Euler cylindrical coordinates r–z) computer code FLUX-rz developed in VNIIEF (Russia). Earlier, the code considered the thermal radiation transfer in one-group (gray) diffusion approximation. This paper presents a modification of the FLUX-rz code in which we realized a multigroup diffusion model of the radiation transfer. Efficiency of an improved algorithm has been demonstrated by sample calculations of Shot 52 and Shot 567 on Z-machine at Sandia National Laboratories (U.S.). [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
