Herein, the challenge of accurately classifying the manufacturing origin of printing paper, including continent, country, and specific product, was addressed. One-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) models trained on infrared (IR) spectrum data acquired from printing paper samples were used for the task. The preprocessing of the IR spectra through a second-derivative transformation and the restriction of the spectral range to 1800 to 1200 cm-1 improved the classification performance of the model. The outcomes were highly promising. Models trained on second-derivative IR spectra in the 1800 to 1200-cm-1 range exhibited perfect classification for the manufacturing continent and country, with an impressive F1 score of 0.980 for product classification. Notably, the developed 1D CNN model outperformed traditional machine learning classifiers, such as support vector machines and feed-forward neural networks. In addition, the application of data point attribution enhanced the transparency of the decision-making process of the model, offering insights into the spectral patterns that affect classification. Document classification is an important area in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Because a huge amount of scientific papers have been published at an accelerating rate, it is beneficial to carry out intelligent paper classifications, especially fine-grained classification for researchers. However, a public scientific paper dataset for fine-grained classification is still lacking, so the existing document classification methods have not been put to the test. To fill this vacancy, we designed and collected the PaperNet-Dataset that consists of multi-modal data (texts and figures). PaperNet 1.0 version contains hierarchical categories of papers in the fields of computer vision (CV) and NLP, 2 coarse-grained and 20 fine-grained (7 in CV and 13 in NLP). We ran current mainstream models on the PaperNet-Dataset, along with a multi-modal method that we propose. Interestingly, none of these methods reaches an accuracy of 80% in fine-grained classification, showing plenty of room for improvement. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an important analysis technique with applications in many industrial branches and fields of scientific research. Nowadays, the advantages of LIBS are impaired by the main drawback in the interpretation of obtained spectra and identification of observed spectral lines. This procedure is highly time-consuming since it is essentially based on the comparison of lines present in the spectrum with the literature database. This paper proposes the use of various computational intelligence methods to develop a reliable and fast classification of quasi-destructively acquired LIBS spectra into a set of predefined classes. We focus on a specific problem of classification of paper-ink samples into 30 separate, predefined classes. For each of 30 classes (10 pens of each of 5 ink types combined with 10 sheets of 5 paper types plus empty pages), 100 LIBS spectra are collected. Four variants of preprocessing, seven classifiers (decision trees, random forest, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, probabilistic neural network, multi-layer perceptron, and generalized regression neural network), 5-fold stratified cross-validation, and a test on an independent set (for methods evaluation) scenarios are employed. Our developed system yielded an accuracy of 99.08%, obtained using the random forest classifier. Our results clearly demonstrates that machine learning methods can be used to identify the paper-ink samples based on LIBS reliably at a faster rate.

Brain stroke, or a cerebrovascular accident, is a devastating medical condition that disrupts the blood supply to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. Each year, according to the World Health Organization, 15 million people worldwide experience a stroke. This results in approximately 5 million deaths and another 5 million individuals suffering permanent disabilities. The complex interplay of various risk factors highlights the urgent need for sophisticated analytical methods to more accurately predict stroke risks and manage their outcomes. Machine learning and deep learning technologies offer promising solutions by analyzing extensive datasets including patient demographics, health records, and lifestyle choices to uncover patterns and predictors not easily discernible by humans. These technologies enable advanced data processing, analysis, and fusion techniques for a comprehensive health assessment. We conducted a comprehensive review of 25 review papers published between 2020 and 2024 on machine learning and deep learning applications in brain stroke diagnosis, focusing on classification, segmentation, and object detection. Furthermore, all these reviews explore the performance evaluation and validation of advanced sensor systems in these areas, enhancing predictive health monitoring and personalized care recommendations. Moreover, we also provide a collection of the most relevant datasets used in brain stroke analysis. The selection of the papers was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was crucial for the healthcare sector to detect and classify the virus using X-ray and CT scans. This has underlined the need for advanced Deep Learning and Machine Learning approaches to effectively spot and manage the virus's spread. Indeed, researchers worldwide have dynamically participated in the field by publishing an important number of papers across various databases. In this context, we present a bibliometric analysis focused on the detection and classification of COVID-19 using Deep Learning and Machine Learning techniques, based on X-Ray and CT images. We analyzed published documents of the six prominent databases (IEEE Xplore, ACM, MDPI, PubMed, Springer, and ScienceDirect) during the period between 2019 and November 2023. Our results showed that rising forces in economy and technology, especially India, China, Turkey, and Pakistan, began to compete with the great powers in the field of scientific research, which could be seen from their number of publications. Moreover, researchers contributed to Deep Learning techniques more than the use of Machine Learning techniques or the use of both together and preferred to submit their works to Springer Database. An important result was that more than 57% documents were published as Journal Articles, which was an important portion compared to other publication types (conference papers and book chapters). Emotions are fundamental for human beings and play an important role in human cognition. Emotion is commonly associated with logical decision making, perception, human interaction, and to a certain extent, human intelligence itself. With the growing interest of the research community towards establishing some meaningful "emotional" interactions between humans and computers, the need for reliable and deployable solutions for the identification of human emotional states is required. Recent developments in using electroencephalography (EEG) for emotion recognition have garnered strong interest from the research community as the latest developments in consumer-grade wearable EEG solutions can provide a cheap, portable, and simple solution for identifying emotions. Since the last comprehensive review was conducted back from the years 2009 to 2016, this paper will update on the current progress of emotion recognition using EEG signals from 2016 to 2019. The focus on this state-of-the-art review focuses on the elements of emotion stimuli type and presentation approach, study size, EEG hardware, machine learning classifiers, and classification approach. From this state-of-the-art review, we suggest several future research opportunities including proposing a different approach in presenting the stimuli in the form of virtual reality (VR). To this end, an additional section devoted specifically to reviewing only VR studies within this research domain is presented as the motivation for this proposed new approach using VR as the stimuli presentation device. In this research paper, we delve into the classification of Thai cuisine images. Despite Thailand's renowned reputation for its multicultural culinary landscape, there is a noticeable gap in dedicated studies on Thai food classification. This paper seeks to fill that void by applying deep learning methodologies, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), to the identification of Thai cuisine. Thai cuisine, shaped by regional and intra-regional variations, serves as a powerful cultural representation for the nation. The study employs image recognition through CNN and integrates transfer learning to enhance classification performance. The collaborative learning process between CNN and transfer learning contributes to achieving a noteworthy accuracy rate of 84%. While previous research has often overlooked the specificity of Thai cuisine, our aim is to shed light on the potential of deep classification networks, offering an engaging illustration for both researchers and food enthusiasts alike contributing to the broader field of food image classification. Twin Support Vector Machine (TSVM) is a powerful machine learning method that is usually used to solve binary classification problems. But although the classification speed and performance of TSVM is better than that of primitive support vector machine, TSVM still faces the problem of difficult parameter selection; therefore, to overcome the problem of parameter selection of TSVM, this paper proposes a Chaotic Mapping Dung Beetle Optimization Algorithm-based Twin Support Vector Machine (CMDBO-TSVM) for automatic parameter selection. Due to the uncertainty of the random initialization population of the original Dung Beetle Optimization Algorithm, this paper additionally adds chaotic mapping initialization to improve the Dung Beetle Optimization Algorithm. Electroencephalography (EEG) is increasingly important in Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems due to its portability and simplicity. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of research on EEG signal processing techniques since 2021, with a focus on preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification methods. We analyzed 61 research articles retrieved from academic search engines, including CNKI, PubMed, Nature, IEEE Xplore, and Science Direct. For preprocessing, we focus on innovatively proposed preprocessing methods, channel selection, and data augmentation. Data augmentation is classified into conventional methods (sliding windows, segmentation and recombination, and noise injection) and deep learning methods [Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and Variation AutoEncoder (VAE)]. We also pay attention to the application of deep learning, and multi-method fusion approaches, including both conventional algorithm fusion and fusion between conventional algorithms and deep learning. Our analysis identifies 35 (57.4%), 18 (29.5%), and 37 (60.7%) studies in the directions of preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification, respectively. We find that preprocessing methods have become widely used in EEG classification (96.7% of reviewed papers) and comparative experiments have been conducted in some studies to validate preprocessing. We also discussed the adoption of channel selection and data augmentation and concluded several mentionable matters about data augmentation. Furthermore, deep learning methods have shown great promise in EEG classification, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) being the main structure of deep neural networks (92.3% of deep learning papers). We summarize and analyze several innovative neural networks, including CNNs and multi-structure fusion. However, we also identified several problems and limitations of current deep learning techniques in EEG classification, including inappropriate input, low cross-subject accuracy, unbalanced between parameters and time costs, and a lack of interpretability. Finally, we highlight the emerging trend of multi-method fusion approaches (49.2% of reviewed papers) and analyze the data and some examples. As digital technologies have advanced more rapidly, the number of paper documents recently converted into a digital format has exponentially increased. To respond to the urgent need to categorize the growing number of digitized documents, the classification of digitized documents in real time has been identified as the primary goal of our study. A paper classification is the first stage in automating document control and efficient knowledge discovery with no or little human involvement. Artificial intelligence methods such as Deep Learning are now combined with segmentation to study and interpret those traits, which were not conceivable ten years ago. Deep learning aids in comprehending input patterns so that object classes may be predicted. The segmentation process divides the input image into separate segments for a more thorough image study. This study proposes a deep learning-enabled framework for automated document classification, which can be implemented in higher education. To further this goal, a dataset was developed that includes seven categories: Diplomas, Personal documents, Journal of Accounting of higher education diplomas, Service letters, Orders, Production orders, and Student orders. Subsequently, a deep learning model based on Conv2D layers is proposed for the document classification process. In the final part of this research, the proposed model is evaluated and compared with other machine-learning techniques. The results demonstrate that the proposed deep learning model shows high results in document categorization overtaking the other machine learning models by reaching 94.84%, 94.79%, 94.62%, 94.43%, 94.07% in accuracy, precision, recall, F-score, and AUC-ROC, respectively. Cotton plant (Gossypium herbaceum), is one of the significant fiber crop grown worldwide. However, the crop is quite prone to leaves diseases, for which deep learning (DL) techniques can be utilized for early disease prediction and prevent stakeholders from losing the harvest. The objective of this paper is to develop a novel ensemble based deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model developed on two base pretrained models named: VGG16 and InceptionV3 for early detection of cotton leaves diseases. The proposed ensemble model trained on cotton leaves dataset reports higher training and testing prediction accuracies as compared to the base pretrained models. Given that, deep learning architectures have hyper-parameters, this paper presents exhaustive experimental evaluations on ensemble model to tune hyper-parameters named learning rate, optimizer and no of epochs. The suggested hyper-parameter settings can be directly utilized while employing the ensemble model for cotton plant leaves disease detection and prediction. With suggested hyper-parameters settings of learning rate 0.0001, 20 epochs and stochastic gradient descent (SGD) optimizer, ensemble model reported training and testing accuracies of 98% and 95% respectively, which was higher than the training and testing accuracies of VGG16 and InceptionV3 pretrained DCNN models. Traditional metrics may not adequately assess performance in certain situations, whereas the Area Under Curve (AUC) offers a comprehensive perspective by considering both sensitivity and specificity. This method enhances interpretability, addresses limitations, and promotes the development of robust clustering algorithms. In unsupervised learning, utilizing AUC is a significant method for improving the precision and accuracy of machine learning models. Our work is inspired by several recent related works that implement approaches to manage the challenges of developing new metrics that can effectively assess and evaluate the performance of clustering algorithms. The research question relies on the concept of using an optimal metric for model evaluation of classification and clustering. Therefore, the paper investigates the use of the classification metric AUC for clustering validation purposes. The methodology we adopt is a hybrid clustering model because such a technique offers a robust model by combining the strengths of each model. The linkage approach directly impacts the clustering results, so we give significant attention to this feature in our implementation. Among the various linkage methods, we utilized single and average linkages. The Manhattan and Euclidean metrics are the distance measures used in this work. Thus, our contribution is to explore the benefit of using linkages and distance measurement in clustering with the help of the AUC metric. In addition, the entire proposed work and the contributions of this paper are evaluated and applied to the NSL-KDD dataset. The mortality rate and overall consequences of cardiac disease can be reduced with early disease detection. However, conventional diagnostic methods encounter various challenges, including delayed treatment and misdiagnoses, which can impede the course of treatment and raise healthcare costs. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, especially machine learning (ML) algorithms, offers a promising pathway to address these challenges. This paper emphasizes the central role of machine learning in cardiac health and focuses on precise cardiovascular disease prediction. Skin lesions are essential for the early detection and management of a number of dermatological disorders. Learning-based methods for skin lesion analysis have drawn much attention lately because of improvements in computer vision and machine learning techniques. A review of the most-recent methods for skin lesion classification, segmentation, and detection is presented in this survey paper. The significance of skin lesion analysis in healthcare and the difficulties of physical inspection are discussed in this survey paper. The review of state-of-the-art papers targeting skin lesion classification is then covered in depth with the goal of correctly identifying the type of skin lesion from dermoscopic, macroscopic, and other lesion image formats. The contribution and limitations of various techniques used in the selected study papers, including deep learning architectures and conventional machine learning methods, are examined. The survey then looks into study papers focused on skin lesion segmentation and detection techniques that aimed to identify the precise borders of skin lesions and classify them accordingly. These techniques make it easier to conduct subsequent analyses and allow for precise measurements and quantitative evaluations. The survey paper discusses well-known segmentation algorithms, including deep-learning-based, graph-based, and region-based ones. The difficulties, datasets, and evaluation metrics particular to skin lesion segmentation are also discussed. Throughout the survey, notable datasets, benchmark challenges, and evaluation metrics relevant to skin lesion analysis are highlighted, providing a comprehensive overview of the field. Bayesian network classifiers (BNCs) have demonstrated competitive classification performance in a variety of real-world applications. A highly scalable BNC with high expressivity is extremely desirable. This paper proposes Redundant Dependence Elimination (RDE) for improving the classification performance and expressivity of k-dependence Bayesian classifier (KDB). To demonstrate the unique characteristics of each case, RDE identifies redundant conditional dependencies and then substitute/remove them. The learned personalized k-dependence Bayesian Classifier (PKDB) can achieve high-confidence conditional probabilities, and graphically interpret the dependency relationships between attributes. Two thyroid cancer datasets and four other cancer datasets from the UCI machine learning repository are selected for our experimental study. In most biomedical research paper corpus, document classification is a crucial task. Even due to the global epidemic, it is a crucial task for researchers across a variety of fields to figure out the relevant scientific research papers accurately and quickly from a flood of biomedical research papers. It can also assist learners or researchers in assigning a research paper to an appropriate category and also help to find the relevant research paper within a very short time. A biomedical document classifier needs to be designed differently to go beyond a "general" text classifier because it's not dependent only on the text itself (i.e. on titles and abstracts) but can also utilize other information like entities extracted using some medical taxonomies or bibliometric data. The main objective of this research was to find out the type of information or features and representation method creates influence the biomedical document classification task. For this reason, we run several experiments on conventional text classification methods with different kinds of features extracted from the titles, abstracts, and bibliometric data. These procedures include data cleaning, feature engineering, and multi-class classification. Eleven different variants of input data tables were created and analyzed using ten machine learning algorithms. We also evaluate the data efficiency and interpretability of these models as essential features of any biomedical research paper classification system for handling specifically the COVID-19 related health crisis. Our major findings are that TF-IDF representations outperform the entity extraction methods and the abstract itself provides sufficient information for correct classification. Out of the used machine learning algorithms, the best performance over various forms of document representation was achieved by Random Forest and Neural Network (BERT). In this paper, we propose a system that automatically classifies the surface damages of wooden architectural cultural heritage based on deep learning algorithms. Commonly, on-site surface damage inspections of cultural heritage are carried out manually by field experts. However, it is difficult to manage cultural heritage because experts are not always onsite to check for damage. To overcome this problem, a deep-learning-based classification method is designed to detect surface damage automatically so that cultural heritage monitoring can be done in real time. The dataset required for the development of the deep learning model utilized 4,000 images taken directly from cultural heritage sites. As a result of a comparative analysis of the performance of four deep learning models for several examples of wooden architectural heritage, the damage detection rate of the deep learning model built in this study showed excellent performance between 94.00 and 96.50%. When gradient-weighted class activation mapping is applied to visualize the damage detection results, the performance of the model with the best performance stood out. Education is essential and increasingly crucial for the development of almost all countries worldwide. As educational data has become increasingly available, scholars have shown a growing interest in exploring the correlation between students’ academic achievements and other factors that may impact their performance using machine learning algorithms. This research paper introduces a novel hybrid classifier that aims to predict the academic performance of students by using a combination of different single algorithms. The proposed hybrid classifier (PHC) is compared to six available classification algorithms (random forest (RF), C4.5, classification and regression trees (CART), support vector machines (SVM), naive Bayes (NB) and K-nearest neighbors (KNN)) using recall, precision, F1-score, and accuracy evaluation measures. Our experimental results reveal that the PHC classifier consistently outperforms the individual classifiers across multiple evaluation metrics. Specifically, the PHC classifier achieved an accuracy rate of 92.40%, surpassing the RF, C4.5, and CART classifiers, which were the next best performers. In terms of precision and F1 score, the PHC also demonstrated superior performance, indicating its robustness in correctly identifying positive instances and providing balanced accuracy. While the C4.5 classifier performed comparably to the PHC classifier concerning the recall metric, the hybrid model’s overall performance highlights its effectiveness in leveraging the complementary strengths of the included classifiers. The suggested hybrid model has the potential to enhance students’ academic performance and success more effectively and efficiently. It could benefit students, educators, and academic institutions. Efficient triaging and referral assessments are critical in ensuring prompt medical intervention in the community healthcare (CHC) system. However, the existing triaging systems in many community health services are an intensive, time-consuming process and often lack accuracy, particularly for various symptoms which might represent heart failure or other health-threatening conditions. There is a noticeable limit of research papers describing AI technologies for triaging patients. This paper proposes a novel quantitative data-driven approach using machine learning (ML) modelling to improve the community clinical triaging process. Furthermore, this study aims to employ the feature selection process and machine learning power to reduce the triaging process's waiting time and increase accuracy in clinical decision making. The model was trained on medical records from a dataset of patients with "Heart Failure", which included demographics, past medical history, vital signs, medications, and clinical symptoms. A comparative study was conducted using a variety of machine learning algorithms, where XGBoost demonstrated the best performance among the other ML models. The triage levels of 2,35,982 patients achieved an accuracy of 99.94%, a precision of 0.9986, a recall of 0.9958, and an F1-score of 0.9972. The interconnection of Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) has created new opportunities for remote management, data storage in the cloud, real-time data transfer over long distances, or integration between different OT and IT networks. OT networks require increased attention due to the convergence of IT and OT, mainly due to the increased risk of cyber-attacks targeting these networks. This paper focuses on the analysis of different methods and data processing for protocol recognition and traffic classification in the context of OT specifics. Therefore, this paper summarizes the methods used to classify network traffic, analyzes the methods used to recognize and identify the protocol used in the industrial network, and describes machine learning methods to recognize industrial protocols. The output of this work is a comparative analysis of approaches specifically for protocol recognition and traffic classification in OT networks. In addition, publicly available datasets are compared in relation to their applicability for industrial protocol recognition. Research challenges are also identified, highlighting the lack of relevant datasets and defining directions for further research in the area of protocol recognition and classification in OT environments. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an important analysis technique with applications in many industrial branches and fields of scientific research. Nowadays, the advantages of LIBS are impaired by the main drawback in the interpretation of obtained spectra and identification of observed spectral lines. This procedure is highly time-consuming since it is essentially based on the comparison of lines present in the spectrum with the literature database. This paper proposes the use of various computational intelligence methods to develop a reliable and fast classification of quasi-destructively acquired LIBS spectra into a set of predefined classes. We focus on a specific problem of classification of paper-ink samples into 30 separate, predefined classes. For each of 30 classes (10 pens of each of 5 ink types combined with 10 sheets of 5 paper types plus empty pages), 100 LIBS spectra are collected. Four variants of preprocessing, seven classifiers (decision trees, random forest, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, probabilistic neural network, multi-layer perceptron, and generalized regression neural network), 5-fold stratified cross-validation, and a test on an independent set (for methods evaluation) scenarios are employed. Our developed system yielded an accuracy of 99.08%, obtained using the random forest classifier. This scientific review presents a comprehensive overview of medical imaging modalities and their diverse applications in artificial intelligence (AI)-based disease classification and segmentation. The prmary focus of this study is to conduct a systematic review of research articles that examine disease classification and segmentation in different anatomical regions using AI methodologies. The paper offers a solution to the problem of detecting and recognizing surface defects in welded joints that appear during tungsten inert gas welding of metal edges. This problem belongs to the machine vision. Welding of stainless-steel edges is carried out automatically on the pipe production line. Therefore, frames of video sequences are investigated. Images of some welding defects are shown in the paper. An algorithm proposed by the authors is used to detect welding defects in the video sequence frames, the efficiency of which has been confirmed experimentally. The problem solution of welding defects recognition is based on the use of traditional machine learning methods: support vector machine and artificial neural network. To build classification models, a labeled dataset containing automatically extracted texture features from the areas of welding defects detected in the video sequences was created. An analysis was performed to identify the strength of the correlation of texture features between each other and the dependent variable in the dataset for dimensionality reduction of the feature vector. The models were trained and tested on datasets with different numbers of features. The quality of the classification models was evaluated based on the accuracy metric values. The best results were achieved by the classifier built using the support vector machine with a chi-square kernel on a training sample with two features. The build models allow automatic recognition of such welding defects as lack of fusion and metal oxidation. The computational experiments with real video sequences obtained with a digital camera confirmed the possibility of using the proposed solution for recognizing surface welding defects in the process of manufacturing stainless steel pipes. Kernel extreme learning machine (KELM) is a novel feedforward neural network, which is widely used in classification problems. To some extent, it solves the existing problems of the invalid nodes and the large computational complexity in ELM. However, the traditional KELM classifier usually has a low test accuracy when it faces multiclass classification problems. In order to solve the above problem, a new classifier, Mexican Hat wavelet KELM classifier, is proposed in this paper. The proposed classifier successfully improves the training accuracy and reduces the training time in the multiclass classification problems. Moreover, the validity of the Mexican Hat wavelet as a kernel function of ELM is rigorously proved. When it comes to forest management and protection, knowledge is key. Therefore, forest mapping is crucial to obtain the required knowledge towards profitable resource exploitation and increased resilience against wildfires. Within this context, this paper presents a literature review on tree classification and segmentation using data acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles, with special focus on the last decade (2013–2023). The latest research trends in this field are presented and analyzed in two main vectors, namely: (1) data, where used sensors and data structures are resumed; and (2) methods, where remote sensing and data analysis methods are described, with particular focus on machine learning approaches. The study and review methodology filtered 979 papers, which were then screened, resulting in the 144 works included in this paper. These are systematically analyzed and organized by year, keywords, purpose, sensors, and methods used, easily allowing the readers to have a wide, but at the same time detailed, view of the latest trends in automatic tree classification and segmentation using unmanned aerial vehicles. This review shows that image processing and machine learning techniques applied to forestry and segmentation and classification tasks are focused on improving the accuracy and interpretability of the results by using multi-modal data, 3D information, and AI methods. Most works use RGB or multispectral cameras, or LiDAR scanners, individually. Background: Digital clinical measures collected via various digital sensing technologies such as smartphones, smartwatches, wearables, and ingestible and implantable sensors are increasingly used by individuals and clinicians to capture the health outcomes or behavioral and physiological characteristics of individuals. Time series classification (TSC) is very commonly used for modeling digital clinical measures. While deep learning models for TSC are very common and powerful, there exist some fundamental challenges. This review presents the non-deep learning models that are commonly used for time series classification in biomedical applications that can achieve high performance. Objective: We performed a systematic review to characterize the techniques that are used in time series classification of digital clinical measures throughout all the stages of data processing and model building. Methods: We conducted a literature search on PubMed, as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases using a range of search terms to retrieve peer-reviewed articles that report on the academic research about digital clinical measures from a five-year period between June 2016 and June 2021. We identified and categorized the research studies based on the types of classification algorithms and sensor input types. Results: We found 452 papers in total from four different databases: PubMed, IEEE, Web of Science Database, and SCOPUS. After removing duplicates and irrelevant papers, 135 articles remained for detailed review and data extraction. Among these, engineered features using time series methods that were subsequently fed into widely used machine learning classifiers were the most commonly used technique, and also most frequently achieved the best performance metrics (77 out of 135 articles). Statistical modeling (24 out of 135 articles) algorithms were the second most common and also the second-best classification technique. Conclusions: In this review paper, summaries of the time series classification models and interpretation methods for biomedical applications are summarized and categorized. While high time series classification performance has been achieved in digital clinical, physiological, or biomedical measures, no standard benchmark datasets, modeling methods, or reporting methodology exist. Problems related to ventral hernia repairs (VHR) are very common, and evaluating them using computational methods can assist in selecting the most appropriate treatment. This study is based upon data from 3339 patients from different European countries observed during the last 12 years (2012–2023), which were collected by specialists in hernia surgery. Most patients underwent standard surgical procedures, with a growing trend towards laparoscopic surgery. This paper focuses on statistically evaluating the treatment methods in relation to patient age, body mass index (BMI), and the type of repair. Appropriate mathematical methods are employed to extract and classify the selected features, with emphasis on computational and machine-learning techniques. The paper presents surgical hernia treatment statistics related to patient age, BMI, and repair methods. The main conclusions point to mean groin hernia repair (GHR) complications of 19% for patients in the database. The accuracy of separating GHR mesh surgery with and without postoperative complications reached 74.4% using a two-layer neural network classification. Robotic surgeries represent 22.9% of all the evaluated hernia repairs. The proposed methodology suggests both an interdisciplinary approach and the utilization of computational intelligence in hernia surgery, potentially applicable in a clinical setting. Apple cultivar classification is challenging due to the inter-class similarity and high intra-class variations. Human experts do not rely on single-view features but rather study each viewpoint of the apple to identify a cultivar, paying close attention to various details. Following our previous work, we try to establish a similar multiview approach for machine-learning (ML)-based apple classification in this paper. In our previous work, we studied apple classification using one single view. While these results were promising, it also became clear that one view alone might not contain enough information in the case of many classes or cultivars. Therefore, exploring multiview classification for this task is the next logical step. Multiview classification is nothing new, and we use state-of-the-art approaches as a base. Our goal is to find the best approach for the specific apple classification task and study what is achievable with the given methods towards our future goal of applying this on a mobile device without the need for internet connectivity. In this study, we compare an ensemble model with two cases where we use single networks: one without view specialization trained on all available images without view assignment and one where we combine the separate views into a single image of one specific instance. The two latter options reflect dataset organization and preprocessing to allow the use of smaller models in terms of stored weights and number of operations than an ensemble model. We compare the different approaches based on our custom apple cultivar dataset. The results show that the state-of-the-art ensemble provides the best result. However, using images with combined views shows a decrease in accuracy by 3% while requiring only 60% of the memory for weights. The identification of wetland vegetation is essential for environmental protection and management as well as for monitoring wetlands' health and assessing ecosystem services. However, some limitations on vegetation classification may be related to remote sensing technology, confusion between plant species, and challenges related to inadequate data accuracy. In this paper, vegetation classification in the Yancheng Coastal Wetlands is studied and evaluated from Sentinel-2 images based on a random forest algorithm. Based on consistent time series from remote sensing observations, the characteristic patterns of the Yancheng Coastal Wetlands were better captured. Firstly, the spectral features, vegetation indices, and phenological characteristics were extracted from remote sensing images, and classification products were obtained by constructing a dense time series using a dataset based on Sentinel-2 images in Google Earth Engine (GEE). Then, remote sensing classification products based on the random forest machine learning algorithm were obtained, with an overall accuracy of 95.64% and kappa coefficient of 0.94. Four indicators (POP, SOS, NDVIre, and B12) were the main contributors to the importance of the weight analysis for all features. Recently, a significant amount of research work has been carried out in the field of feature selection. Although these methods help to increase the accuracy of the machine learning classification, the selected subset of features considers all the classes and may not select recommendable features for a particular class. The main goal of our paper is to propose a new class-specific feature selection algorithm that is capable of selecting an appropriate subset of features for each class. In this regard, we first perform class binarization and then select the best features for each class. During the feature selection process, we deal with class imbalance problems and redundancy elimination. The Weighted Average Voting Ensemble method is used for the final classification. Finally, we carry out experiments to compare our proposed feature selection approach with the existing popular feature selection methods. Existing precipitation-type algorithms have difficulty discerning the occurrence of freezing rain and ice pellets. These inherent biases are not only problematic in operational forecasting but also complicate the development of model-based precipitation-type climatologies. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel light gradient-boosting machine (LightGBM)-based machine learning precipitation-type algorithm that utilizes reanalysis and surface observations. By comparing it with the Bourgouin precipitation-type algorithm as a baseline, we demonstrate that our algorithm improves the critical success index (CSI) for all examined precipitation types. Moreover, when compared with the precipitation-type diagnosis in reanalysis, our algorithm exhibits increased F1 scores for snow, freezing rain, and ice pellets. Subsequently, we utilize the algorithm to compute a freezing-rain climatology over the eastern United States. The resulting climatology pattern aligns well with observations; however, a significant mean bias is observed. We interpret this bias to be influenced by both the algorithm itself and assumptions regarding precipitation processes, which include biases associated with freezing drizzle, precipitation occurrence, and regional synoptic weather patterns. To mitigate the overall bias, we propose increasing the precipitation cutoff from 0.04 to 0.25 mm h−1, as it better reflects the precision of precipitation observations. This adjustment yields a substantial reduction in the overall bias. Finally, given the strong performance of LightGBM in predicting mixed precipitation episodes, we anticipate that the algorithm can be effectively utilized in operational settings and for diagnosing precipitation types in climate model outputs. Significance Statement: Freezing rain can have significant impacts on transportation and infrastructure, making accurate prediction of precipitation types crucial. In this study, we use a machine learning method known as LightGBM to predict precipitation types. We show that the new algorithm performs better than the existing methods for all precipitation types examined. Additionally, we compute a freezing-rain climatology over the eastern United States. Although the resulting climatology pattern corresponds well to observations, the algorithm overpredicts freezing-rain occurrence. We argue that this bias can be substantially reduced by increasing the precipitation cutoff from 0.04 to 0.25 mm h−1. X-ray mammography is currently considered the golden standard method for breast cancer screening, however, it has limitations in terms of sensitivity and specificity. With the rapid advancements in deep learning techniques, it is possible to customize mammography for each patient, providing more accurate information for risk assessment, prognosis, and treatment planning. This paper aims to study the recent achievements of deep learning-based mammography for breast cancer detection and classification. This review paper highlights the potential of deep learning-assisted X-ray mammography in improving the accuracy of breast cancer screening. While the potential benefits are clear, it is essential to address the challenges associated with implementing this technology in clinical settings. Future research should focus on refining deep learning algorithms, ensuring data privacy, improving model interpretability, and establishing generalizability to successfully integrate deep learning-assisted mammography into routine breast cancer screening programs. It is hoped that the research findings will assist investigators, engineers, and clinicians in developing more effective breast imaging tools that provide accurate diagnosis, sensitivity, and specificity for breast cancer. The electroencephalogram (EEG) serves as an essential tool in exploring brain activity and holds particular importance in the field of mental health research. This review paper examines the application of artificial intelligence (AI), encompassing machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), for classifying schizophrenia (SCZ) through EEG. It includes a thorough literature review that addresses the difficulties, methodologies, and discoveries in this field. ML approaches utilize conventional models like Support Vector Machines and Decision Trees, which are interpretable and effective with smaller data sets. In contrast, DL techniques, which use neural networks such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), are more adaptable to intricate EEG patterns but require significant data and computational power. Both ML and DL face challenges concerning data quality and ethical issues. This paper underscores the importance of integrating various techniques to enhance schizophrenia diagnosis and highlights AI's potential role in this process. Motorway incidents are frequent & varied in nature. Incident management on motorways is critical for both driver safety & road network operation. The expected duration of an incident is a key parameter in the decision-making process for control room operators, however, the actual duration for which an incident will impact the network is never known with true certainty. This paper presents a study which compares the ability of different machine learning algorithms to estimate the duration of motorway incidents on Ireland's M50 motorway, using an extensive historical incident database. Results show that the support vector machine has the best performance in most cases, but a different method may need to be used to improve accuracy in some situations. Results highlight the main challenges in accurately forecasting incident durations in real time & recommendations are made for improving prediction accuracy through systematic recording of various additional incident details. Myocardial Infarction (MI) is a condition often leading to death. It arises from inadequate blood flow to the heart, therefore, the classification of MI complications contributing to lethal outcomes is essential to save lives. Machine learning algorithms provide solutions to support the categorization of the MI complication attributes and predict lethal results. This paper compares various machine learning algorithms to classify myocardial infarction complications and to predict fatal consequences. The considered algorithms are Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Naive Bayes (NB), and Decision Tree (DT). The main objective of this paper is to compare these algorithms in two scenarios: initially using the full dataset once and then using the dataset again, after implementing the WEKA attribute selection algorithm. To accomplish this goal, data from the Krasnoyarsk Interdistrict Clinical Hospital were employed. Results in general revealed that the MLP classifier demonstrated optimal performance regarding the full MI data, whereas the DT classifier emerged as more favorable when the dataset sample size was diminished through an attribute selection algorithm. Airport arrival and departure movements are characterized by high dynamism, stochasticity, and uncertainty. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to predict and analyze surface taxi time accurately and scientifically. This paper conducts a comprehensive review of existing studies on surface taxi time prediction and analysis. Firstly, the overall research framework of surface taxi time prediction and analysis is categorized from three perspectives: taxi time type, movement type, and modeling method. Then, focusing on the two means of taxi time analytical modeling and simulation modeling, the existing mainstream models and methods are categorized, and the main ideas and scope of application of the various methods are analyzed. Finally, the paper presents the future development direction of surface taxi time prediction prospects. The research results are aimed at providing basic support and methodological guidance for reducing the uncertainty in airport surface operation and enhancing the level of control and decision-making ability of airport surface operation. In practice, time series data obtained is usually small and missing, which poses a great challenge to data analysis in different domains, such as increasing the bias of model predictions, reducing the accuracy of model classification, and affecting the analysis data. This paper aims to address the problem of missing data imputation and classification of small sample time series data. By exploring and implementing efficient data interpolation strategies to improve classification accuracy, the robustness and accuracy of classification models in the face of incomplete data. To achieve this, we propose a new model that can effectively classify time series data with missing values. Our model utilizes a bi-directional long short-term memory network combined with an extreme learning machine for the imputation task, which can recover the missing time series values. For the classification task, we employ a self-attentional Inception Time network, which is regularized by a classification loss to effectively mitigate network overfitting. To improve the performance of the model on small sample time series datasets, we use a gradient penalty adversarial training approach. Our model integrates the advantages of multiple network modules, the gradient penalty adversarial multi-task model achieves optimal imputation and robust classification of missing small sample time series data. To evaluate the overall performance of our model, we selected forty datasets from the UCR time series datasets, and selected the German emotional speech datasets and the EEG epilepsy datasets, with the plant electrical signal datasets obtained from real measurements. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of our method compared to other methods, the datasets were set up with multiple missing rates, with root mean square error and coefficient of determination to assess the accuracy of imputation, and with accuracy to assess the performance of the classification task. The results show that our proposed method outperforms existing methods in terms of imputation accuracy and classification performance. To better understand the deep learning model, we used the Grad-CAM + + method to enhance the reliability and credibility of the model by visualizing the important features of the temporal data when the plant electrical signal datasets was tested. In summary, this paper presents a model framework for the imputation and classification of missing small sample time series data, and the experimental results show that our model provides an effective solution for dealing with the analysis of missing small sample time series data. Breast cancer is the most common and deadly type of cancer in the world. Based on machine learning algorithms such as XGBoost, random forest, logistic regression, and K-nearest neighbor, this paper establishes different models to classify and predict breast cancer, so as to provide a reference for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Recall indicates the probability of detecting malignant cancer cells in medical diagnosis, which is of great significance for the classification of breast cancer, so this article takes recall as the primary evaluation index and considers the precision, accuracy, and F1-score evaluation indicators to evaluate and compare the prediction effect of each model. In order to eliminate the influence of different dimensional concepts on the effect of the model, the data are standardized. In order to find the optimal subset and improve the accuracy of the model, 15 features were screened out as input to the model through the Pearson correlation test. The K-nearest neighbor model uses the cross-validation method to select the optimal k value by using recall as an evaluation index. For the problem of positive and negative sample imbalance, the hierarchical sampling method is used to extract the training set and test set proportionally according to different categories. The experimental results show that under different dataset division (8 : 2 and 7 : 3), the prediction effect of the same model will have different changes. Comparative analysis shows that the XGBoost model established in this paper (which divides the training set and test set by 8 : 2) has better effects, and its recall, precision, accuracy, and F1-score are 1.00, 0.960, 0.974, and 0.980, respectively.
