This paper proposes a novel method for instantaneous balancing of neutral-point (NP) voltages with stacked multilevel inverters (MLIs) for variable-speed drives. The stacked MLI uses series-connected dc sources and NPs (connecting points of dc sources) to obtain the desired levels. The balancing of NP voltages are obtained by using a low-voltage-capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridge (CHB) per phase of a symmetrical six-phase induction machine (IM), which ensures zero current drawn from NPs (at any given instant). Since no current is drawn from NPs, the single dc-link operation with stacked capacitors is also possible. The scheme is suitable for applications, where low-voltage dc sources and batteries are stacked to form a dc link. A variable-speed operation is done using a seven-level inverter scheme for a symmetrical six-phase IM, which is formed by three dc-link stacked capacitors cascaded with two low-voltage-capacitor-fed CHBs per phase. Furthermore, the method is extended for an open-end IM to obtain a seven-level common-mode eliminated space vector structure using a single dc link. The generalization of this method for any stacked $n$ -level inverter without NP voltage deviation is also presented in this paper. This paper proposes a new single-phase single-stage switched-boost inverter with four switches. Like the quasi-Z-source inverter and quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI), the proposed inverter has the main features as continuous input current, buck/boost voltage with single-stage conversion, and shoot-through immunity. Compared to the qSBI, the proposed inverter uses one more capacitor and one less switch. This paper presents the operating principles, pulse-width modulation control strategy, parameter design guidelines, and simulation results for the proposed inverter. To verify the performance of the proposed inverter, an 800-W prototype was built with an 110 V/50 Hz output voltage in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. This paper proposes a dual-function dynamic voltage restorer (DFDVR) with fault current-limiting capability. The new topology can operate under different modes: the short-circuit fault current-limiting mode and the compensation mode for voltage fluctuation. Different functions of the DFDVR are achieved by controlling a brake chopper circuit and antiparallel thyristors. During fault conditions, the antiparallel thyristors are deactivated to protect the dc-side capacitor, and the duration of the on- and off-periods of the semiconductor switch in the brake chopper circuit is controlled to adjust fault current amplitudes. During voltage sags, the antiparallel thyristors are activated, and the brake chopper circuit is turned off by controlling the gate turn-off thyristor in the brake chopper circuit, thus making the DFDVR similar to a conventional DVR. The control scheme and optimal parameter selection of the DFDVR are provided. The design methodology of the DFDVR was verified through simulations performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. In this paper, a new multi-input multi-output (MIMO) dc–dc converter with high step-up capability is proposed for wide power ranges. Also, in order to increase each output voltage, diode–capacitor voltage multiplier (VM) stages are utilized in the proposed converter. The number of input stages, output stages, and VM stages are arbitrary and dependent on design conditions. At first, the general structure of proposed MIMO converter is presented. Then, in order to explain the converter operation, we walk through the design of a 1-kW four-input two-output example, including loss and efficiency calculations. This paper presents a new reconfiguration module for asymmetrical multilevel inverters in which the capacitors are used as the dc links to create the levels for staircase waveforms. This configuration of the multilevel converter makes a reduction in dc sources. On the other hand, it is possible to generate 13 levels with lower dc sources. The proposed module of the multilevel inverter generates 13 levels with two unequal dc sources (2VDC and 1VDC). It also involves two chargeable capacitors and 14 semiconductor switches. The capacitors are self-charging without any extra circuit. The lower number of components makes it desirable to be used in wide range of applications. The module is schematized as two back-to-back T-type inverters and some other switches around it. Also, it can be connected as a cascade modular which leads to a modular topology with more voltage levels at higher voltages. The proposed module makes the inherent creation of the negative voltage levels without any additional circuit (such as H-bridge circuit). Nearest level control switching modulation scheme is applied to achieve high-quality sinusoidal output voltage. A 1-φ hybrid nine-level inverter (H9LI) topology has been proposed in this paper. The proposed H9LI topology uses a simple phase disposition pulsewidth modulation strategy to generate nine-voltage levels in the output. The main advantage of this topology is that it has a low switch count (ten switches) compared to the existing nine-level inverter topologies. To regulate the voltage across auxiliary capacitor, two innovative control techniques are proposed, which are integrated with the inverter modulation technique itself. Hence, it does not require any extra voltage balancing circuits to maintain the voltage across the auxiliary capacitor and input dc capacitors. A major advantage of these control techniques is that they eliminate the sensing of the coupled inductor current. Another significant advantage of H9LI is that loss distribution among all the power switches is more uniform compared to existing nine-level inverters. Due to low part count and absence of extra voltage balancing circuits, the H9LI achieves higher efficiency (η ≍ 94.5%) and lower cost. Furthermore, the requirement of filter size reduces due to the presence of coupled inductor in H9LI. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed to eliminate the common-mode voltage (CMV). For the 5L-ANPC inverter, which produces a good output voltage performance and lowdv/dt, the total 125 voltage vectors can be generated, among which the proposed scheme employs only 19 voltage vectors producing a zero CMV. Due to the limitation of voltage vectors selected, the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 5L-ANPC inverter cannot be balanced by themselves. Therefore, the capacitor voltages of the inverter should be controlled by choosing the redundant switching states appropriately. This paper proposes a new diode-clamped multilevel inverter that can effectively balance the voltages of dc capacitors. For the proposed inverter, the inductors are inserted between the diodes and the main switches. Also, the voltage balance of the dc capacitors can be guaranteed by controlling the opening time of the corresponding main switches in particular modes. Thus, the parallel circuits on the dc side in the conventional inverters are canceled. Consequently, the proposed topology requires fewer switches, diodes, and capacitors, although it adds the compensation currents to the corresponding main switches. This paper proposes a control method for a five-level hybrid flying-capacitor (5L-HFC) inverter, of which structure stems from the conventional five-level active neutral-point-clamped (5L-ANPC) topology by dividing the dc-link stage into three series-connected capacitors. In this inverter, the voltage stress on the power switches connected to the dc link is reduced by a half compared with that of the 5L-ANPC topology, thus the lower number of equally voltage-rated power devices can be employed. Also, the power losses in the 5L-HFC inverter are more evenly distributed than in the 5L-ANPC. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, a third-order harmonic offset injection is applied. When a diode rectifier is used to supply the dc bus voltage, the balancing method is not effective if the modulation index is higher than 0.64. Thus, an auxiliary circuit is needed to support the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages. However, the unbalancing problem can be overcome in a full-range operation without the auxiliary circuit if the back-to-back configuration is utilized. Owing to low cost, small size, and low weight, transformerless inverters became prominent in single-phase grid connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. Key issues pertaining to these inverters include suppression of common mode (CM) leakage current and improvement of conversion efficiency. Achieving higher efficiency in single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic systems depends on the number of stages involved in feeding power to the grid, predominantly, if the PV array voltage is less than the peak value of the grid voltage. In this paper, an integrated dc–dc converter based grid-connected transformerless PV inverter is proposed which is aimed at maintaining high efficiency, even if the PV array voltage falls below the peak value of grid voltage (efficient operation at an extended input voltage range). A modulation strategy is discussed in order to minimize the flow of CM leakage current. Further, the efficiencies of certain transformerless inverter topologies are analyzed and compared with that of the proposed topology. Detailed simulation studies are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink environment to verify the analysis. This paper presents a nine-level transformer-based inverter requiring only eight switches. The envisaged structure consists of two standard H-bridges fed from a single dc source. Besides, a single-phase transformer is employed to aid the process of intermediate voltage level generation. An ad-hoc pulsewidth modulation scheme based on boolean logic form equations is developed to derive the gating pulses. An effortless extension of the proposed inverter to a higher number of voltage levels is also achieved by generalizing the switching functions. Furthermore, the superior performance of the proposed topology is demonstrated through a comprehensive cost-based analysis. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. In this paper, a new DPWM method using two different offsets for the neutral-point ripple reduction is proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed DPWM method is verified by using the simulation and the experimental results. This paper proposes a vector control strategy for independent control of two permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) using a single four-leg inverter (4LI). An expanded two-arm modulation to obtain a balanced three-phase output voltage is described. This paper also proposes a method to compensate for the fluctuations in the neutral point voltage of two split capacitors in the dc link. Generally, single-stage buck–boost inverters consist of distinct circuits operating individually in buck/boost or positive/negative modes, the latter definitely leading to crossover distortion in the output current. This paper proposes a switching strategy that changes the bimodal operation of a single-stage buck–boost topology to a single-mode inverter. This is due to the consequent voltage gain that ensures that the output voltage polarity, apart from its magnitude, is an exclusive function of the duty ratio. Operational principle and salient hardware design are explained with the help of equivalent circuits. Details about the dynamic model are presented, based on which controller design is carried out for both stand-alone and grid-connected operation. This paper proposes a multiloop framework for current control of grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSIs) with LCL output filter. The discrete-time model is of third-order with a nonminimum phase zero when controlling the grid side current. This poses some difficulties on the design of most types of controllers. Motivated by this problem, the inner loop is implemented by a discrete-time sliding mode control law to ensure the tracking of the converter side current. This can be achieved regardless the grid impedance and voltage, making the converter to behave like a current source inverter with a capacitive+inductive (CL) filter. Thus, the problem of current control falls from a third-order system to a second-order system. Several types of controllers can be designed to implement the outer loop based on the equivalent CL circuit. In this work, a resonant controller with a virtual resistor was applied. This paper presents an optimized topology of 3-$\phi$ , multilevel inverter (MLI) configuration for five or higher level operation with reduced switch count. The proposed solution consists of two basic units (BUs) of multilevel converter and a T-structured 3-level inverter (3-LI). Both BUs are equally shared by the three phases maintaining symmetry among the phases. Moreover, for a higher level operation of the proposed MLI, the modifications required are at two BUs only and not at three legs of the inverter. It further helps in reducing the requirement of extra components for higher level operation compared to the conventional solutions. Furthermore, the topology also has the benefits of reduced switching and conduction loss. An algorithm is also devised to generate the switching pulses for the BUs and the 3-LI, using a carrier-based space vector modulation technique. Adding the auxiliary switches to the conventional H-bridge inverter is an effective way to eliminate the leakage current for transformerless PV systems, such as H5, H6, etc. Inspired by the newly developed embedded-switch H6 topology, a novel embedded-switch inverter (ESI) is proposed in this paper for three-phase transformerless PV systems. First, the operation principle and characteristics of the proposed ESI are analyzed. Second, the common-mode model of the three-phase ESI is established, based on which the main factors that affect the leakage current are discussed. The finding reveals that the switching states with conventional modulation strategy result in high-frequency common-mode voltage, which is the source of leakage current. In order to solve the problem, a new modulation strategy is presented for ESI to eliminate the high-frequency leakage current. This paper presents an optimized topology for a \text3-\phi three-level inverter with complete elimination of common-mode voltage (CMV). The proposed multilevel inverter (MLI) configuration is realized by modifying a T-structure \text3-\phi inverter. The proposed configuration is an optimized solution with respect to the pulse-width modulation strategy used for CMV elimination. The given three-level inverter structure uses only 16 power semiconductor switches, which is much lower than the existing configurations. A reduced number of power semiconductor devices results in a diminished number of driver circuits, less installation space, and low cost. Further, due to the complete elimination of CMV, the proposed MLI is free from issues such as electromagnetic interference and leakage current with a reduction in filter requirement. The presented topology is also compared with other existing topologies to prove its advantage. It is an optimized solution with respect to the dc bus voltage requirement and the total voltage rating of the devices or the components used in the system. To solve the problem of the mismatched voltage levels between the dynamic lower voltage of the fuel cell stack and the required constant higher voltage (400 V) of the dc-link bus of the inverter for fuel cell vehicles, a boost three-level dc–dc converter with a diode rectification quasi-Z source (BTL-DRqZ) is presented in this paper, based on the conventional flying-capacitor boost three-level dc–dc converter. The operating principle of a wide range voltage-gain for this topology is discussed according to the effective switching states of the converter and the multiloop energy communication characteristic of the DRqZ source. The relationship between the quasi-Z source net capacitor voltages, the modulation index, and the output voltage is deduced and then the static and dynamic self-balance principle of the flying-capacitor voltage is presented. Furthermore, a boost three-level dc–dc converter with a synchronous rectification quasi-Z source (BTL-SRqZ) is additionally proposed to improve the conversion efficiency. Finally, a scale-down 1.2 kW BTL-SRqZ prototype has been created, and the maximum efficiency is improved up to 95.66% by using synchronous rectification. In signal injection sensorless drives, the injection voltage cannot be reduced under a certain value. The lower limit of the injection voltage is mainly enforced by the inverter nonlinearity that causes distortion of the injection voltage and degradation of the position estimation performance. After analyzing the inverter nonlinearity during the voltage injection, it is revealed that parasitic capacitances of insulated-gate bipolar transistors have positive effects on inverter output linearity and sensorless control. Based on this analysis, this paper proposes a method to reduce the injection voltage by connecting additional capacitors to the output terminals of the inverter. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed idea. In the experiments, using the capacitor-integrated inverter, it is shown that the injection voltage can be reduced by more than half without degrading the position estimation performance. As penetration of distributed generation increases, the electrical distribution networks may encounter several challenges mainly related to voltage control. The situation may deteriorate in case of a weak grid connected to an intermittent source such as photovoltaic (PV) generation. Fast varying solar irradiance can cause unacceptable voltage variations that may not be easily compensated by slow-responding utility equipment. The PV inverter can be used to control the grid voltage by injecting/absorbing reactive power. A small-signal model is derived in order to study the stability of a PV inverter exchanging reactive power with the grid. This paper also proposes a method that utilizes the available capacity of the PV inverter to support the grid voltage without violating the rating of the inverter and the maximum voltage that the inverter's switching device can withstand. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) employs an LC impedance network between the main inverter bridge and the power source. The unique feature of the ZSI is that it can operate either in buck or boost mode with a wide range of obtainable output voltages from a given input voltage. This topology also exhibits better electromagnetic-interference noise immunity when compared to a traditional voltage-source inverter (VSI). However, the LC impedance network of ZSI significantly increases the size and cost of the power converter and can make it unsuitable for low-power applications. This paper proposes a novel topology called switched boost inverter (SBI) which exhibits similar advantages of ZSI with lower number of passive components and more active components compared to ZSI. The steady-state and small-signal analyses of SBI, along with its pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control strategies, have been discussed in this paper. This paper also presents a comparison of SBI and ZSI with the same input and output parameters. The theoretical analysis given in this paper has been validated using a laboratory prototype of SBI, and the experimental results are presented for verification. The experimental harmonic spectrum of the inverter's output voltage with the proposed PWM technique is also plotted and compared with that of a traditional VSI. In this paper, an immune algorithm (IA) is developed for optimization of the harmonic performance of a three-phase inverter under the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation (SVPWM) control strategy. The presented algorithm employs the immune approach as the search method for finding the best optimal control vectors and action time of the three-phase inverter. As a result, the optimal control vectors and action time are calculated to minimize the objective function of the weighted total harmonic distortion of the output voltage waveforms. In addition, an experimental platform based on DSP and field-programmable gate array is built. This paper provides a detailed performance analysis of the method with comparison to the conventional SVPWM. A new pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed PWM scheme not only takes advantage of the special properties available in NPC inverters, but also reduces the switching loss of the inverter along with an inherent neutral point (NP) voltage control. Based on a circuit-level decoupling concept, the NPC inverter can be decoupled into two three-level Buck converters in every defined operating section, and thereby the controller design can be simplified. The salient features of the proposed scheme, as compared with the existing carrier-based DPWM strategies, are: 1) its reduced computational processing time, 2) its capability to balance the dc-link voltage without any additional control, and 3) its reduced complexity, e.g., only one carrier wave needed for pulse width modulating. Same as a space-vector modulation, the maximum modulation index, 1.1547, can be attainable by the proposed scheme. Moreover, compared to conventional continuous sinusoidal PWM, using this technique proposed here, the switching losses of the devices can be reduced by one third. In order to explain the operation of this topology properly, the decoupling principle including the driving signal synthesis and the NP potential variation are analyzed in detail in this paper. This paper focuses on the common dc-link voltage between a three-phase diode rectifier and a modular multilevel cascade inverter based on double-star chopper cells (MMCI-DSCC) for a medium-voltage motor drive. This motor drive can be operated even when no capacitor exists on the dc link. However, a nonnegligible, but predictable, amount of switching-ripple voltage occurs on the dc link. This paper achieves modeling and analysis of the switching-ripple voltage, thus making it possible to design a small-sized dc passive filter consisting of series connection of a film capacitor and a damping resistor. A 400-V, 15-kW down scaled system is used to confirm the effectiveness of the analysis and the dc filter. Experimental results show that the switching-ripple voltage can be attenuated satisfactorily by the dc filter, and that the power loss dissipated in the damping resistor is negligible, compared to the rated power of 15 kW. Multilevel inverters are receiving more attentions nowadays as one of preferred solutions for medium- and high-power applications. As one of the most popular hybrid multilevel inverter topologies, the five-level active-neutral-point-clamped inverter (5L-ANPC) combines the features of the conventional flying-capacitor type and neutral-point-clamped (NPC) type inverter and was commercially used for industrial applications. In order to further decrease the number of active switches, this paper proposes a seven-switch 5L-ANPC (7S-5L-ANPC) topology, which employs only seven active switches and two discrete diodes. The analysis has shown a lower current rating can be selected for the seventh switch under high power factor condition, which is verified by simulation results. The modulation strategy for 7S-5L-ANPC inverter is discussed. This paper presents a new single-phase switched-coupled-inductor dc–ac inverter featuring higher voltage gain than the existing single-phase qZ-source and semi-Z-source inverters. Similar to the single-phase qZ-source and semi-Z-source inverters, the proposed inverter also has common grounds between the dc input and ac output voltages, which is beneficial especially for photovoltaic inverter systems. The inverter volume and maximum current flowing can be reduced significantly through the coupling of all inductors. This paper proposes a single-phase, single-stage buck–boost inverter for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The presented topology has one common terminal in input and output ports which eliminates common mode leakage current problem in the grid-connected PV applications. Although it uses four switches, its operation is bimodal and only two switches receive high-frequency pulse width modulation signals in each mode. Its principle of operation is described in detail with the help of equivalent circuits. Its dynamic model is presented, based on which a bimodal controller is designed. This paper addresses the inverter nonlinearity of a three-level T-type inverter. The main causes of the nonlinearity are pulse shaping, pulse skipping due to narrow pulses for the dead time, and voltage drop of the switching devices. Although the same causes have existed in two-level inverters, the pulse skipping phenomenon and results are quite different in the case of the three-level T-type inverter. The effects of pulse shaping and skipping have been investigated and discussed. In addition, the voltage drop of the switching devices has been considered in conjunction with the conduction path of the T-type inverter. Compensation methods based on the pulse width modulation (PWM) of T-type inverter to alleviate the inverter nonlinearity have been proposed from research results. The proposed methods could be easily implemented by adding appropriate offset voltages to the voltage references of the inverter in PWM. Furthermore, a neutral voltage balancing method of a three-level T-type inverter has been proposed in conjunction with the proposed PWM methods using offset voltage. Through extensive experimental tests, the fifth- and seventh-harmonic components of the current are conspicuously reduced along with the even harmonics. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme for reducing the common-mode voltage (CMV) in the three-phase five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed, where only the 55 selected voltage vectors among the entire 125 that produce low values of the CMV are utilized. This PWM scheme can significantly reduce the CMV without the increase of switching losses and total harmonic distortion of the output voltages. With the 55 selected voltage vectors, the inverter can still operate up to the maximum modulation index. In addition, the capacitor voltages are controlled by redundant switches of the 5L-ANPC inverters. In this paper, a new cascade switch-ladder multilevel inverter topology is presented which can generate a large number of output voltage levels. First, a fundamental switch-ladder multilevel inverter structure is described. Then, the structure of recommended cascade topology based on series connection of fundamental switch-ladder topologies is presented. To generate maximum number of levels with minimum number of switching elements, dc sources, and voltage on switches, the proposed cascade topology is optimized. Comparison results prove that the presented cascade topology requires fewer numbers of components. Also, the value of voltage rating on switches is less than other structures. This paper proposes a unique carrier-based pulse width modulation strategy for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter that works satisfactorily and with uniform convergence time over the full power factor (PF) range of the load variation. It has excellent control over capacitor voltages and mitigates low-frequency oscillations in the neutral point for the full PF range. First, an investigation is made to see how the load currents get modulated to generate compensating neutral current causing charging and discharging of dc-link capacitors. It is observed that when an additional modulating voltage signal that is in phase with the corresponding phase current is added in each phase, a neutral current is produced in the right direction which can be used to compensate for any prior unbalance in capacitor voltages. It is demonstrated that the performance of this scheme is insensitive to the load PF variation (full range from zero to unity). It performs satisfactorily throughout the entire linear modulation range and eliminates any undesirable low-frequency harmonic component in the compensating neutral current. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through simulation and experimental results by varying load PF as well as modulation index with both passive and motor loads. Diode-assisted buck–boost voltage-source inverter achieves high voltage gain by introducing a switch-capacitor based high step-up dc–dc circuit between the dc source and inverter bridge. As for the unique structure, various pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies are developed with regard to the chopped intermediate dc-link voltage. In order to maximize voltage gain and increase efficiency, this paper proposes a novel PWM strategy. It regulates the average value of intermediate dc-link voltage in one switching time period ( Ts) the same as the instantaneous maximum value of three-phase line voltage by controlling the front boost circuit. Then, the equivalent switching frequency of power devices in the inverter bridge can be reduced to 1/3fs (fs = 1/Ts). The operating principle and closed-loop controller design are analyzed and verified by simulations and experiments. Compared with existing PWM strategies, the new control strategy demonstrates less power device requirement and higher efficiency in high voltage gain applications. It is a more competitive topology for wide range dc/ac voltage regulation in renewable energy applications. Furthermore, with new control strategy, the dc-side inductor current and capacitor voltage contains six-time line-frequency ripples. This paper proposes a new method of generating higher number of levels in the voltage waveform by stacking multilevel converters with lower voltage space vector structures. An important feature of this stacked structure is the use of low voltage devices while attaining higher number of levels. This will find extensive applications in electric vehicles since direct battery drive is possible. The voltages of all the capacitors in the structure can be controlled within a switching cycle using the switching state redundancies (pole voltage redundancies). This helps in reducing the capacitor size. Also, the capacitor voltages can be balanced irrespective of modulation index and load power factor. This paper presents an adaptive observer (AO)-based model predictive control (MPC) for a multilevel flying capacitors inverter (FCI). The proposed system consists of a midpoint dc-link three-cell four-level FCI feeding an RL load. Using the actual load current, the proposed AO estimates accurately the capacitors’ voltages, which are fed to the MPC algorithm by means of a hybrid model considering both discrete and continuous variables. For real-time constraints, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee the practical stability of the proposed AO-based MPC. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are given to show that the proposed method is stable for all system configurations and has good performances even during disturbances (load change, input change, and parameters variations). Differential-mode buck-boost inverters have merits such as reduced switch number, ability to provide voltages higher or lower than the input voltage magnitude, improved efficiency, reduced cost and size, and increased power density, especially in low-power applications. There are five buck-boost inverters that can provide flexible output voltage without the need of a large electrolytic input side capacitor, which degrades the reliability of inverters. The continuous input current of these inverters is appropriate for maximum power point tracking operation in photovoltaic and fuel cells applications. Three of the five inverters can be isolated with high-frequency-link transformers where the common-mode leakage current can be mitigated. However, the performance and control of such converters have not been discussed in detail. In this paper, the five possible single-stage three-phase differential-mode buck-boost inverters with continuous input current are investigated and compared in terms of total losses, maximum ripple current, total harmonic distortion, and device and passive element ratings. In addition, the possible methods are presented for eliminating the input third-order harmonic current, resulting from the stored energy in the passive elements, as well as the output second-order harmonic currents. The ability for isolating the input and output sides of the inverters with a small–high frequency transformers is discussed. In this paper, a novel topology of six-level inverters for a medium-voltage high-power applications is proposed, which consists of inner flying-capacitor inverter (FCI) units and outer two-level inverter units. The proposed topology can reduce the number of devices, components, and isolated sources compared with the existing ones in the case of the same number of output voltage steps, which result in a reduction of the size and weight of the inverters. Also, the total power loss of the proposed topology is lower than that of the diode-clamped inverter (DCI) and FCI. Besides, the estimated cost of the proposed topology is about 60.5% and 81.3% compared with the DCI and FCI, respectively. In addition, the modulation technique and the control strategy for the dc-link capacitor and flying-capacitor voltages are developed for the proposed topology. This paper proposes a new space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SV-PWM) strategy for a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The presented SV-PWM strategy makes it possible to control the neutral point voltage by optimum choice of switch sequence for any position and length of output voltage vector. The proposed solution takes into consideration the unbalance of the dc-link voltages. It also analyzes the influence of vector sequences on the predicted unbalance of the dc-link voltage. The solution allows selecting optimum vectors and their on-time durations in order to reduce quickly the dc-link voltage unbalance. The calculation of the space vector area proposed in this paper takes into consideration voltage unbalance and its influence on the length and position of vectors. This paper deals with a new family of high boost voltage inverters called switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverters (SL-qZSIs). The proposed SL-qZSI is based on the well-known qZSI topology and adds only one inductor and three diodes. In comparison to the SL-ZSI, for the same input and output voltages, the proposed SL-qZSI provides continuous input current, a common ground with the dc source, reduced the passive component count, reduced voltage stress on capacitors, lower shoot-through current, and lower current stress on inductors and diodes. In addition, the proposed SL-qZSI can suppress inrush current at startup, which might destroy the devices. This paper presents the operating principles, analysis, and simulation results, and compares them with those of the SL-ZSI. To verify the performance of the proposed converter, a laboratory prototype was constructed with 48 Vdc input and an ac output line-to-line voltage of 120 Vrms. In this paper, a cascaded H-Bridge (CHB)-multilevel converter (MC)-based photovoltaic (PV) system with no voltage or current sensors at the dc-side is proposed. Eliminating the dc-side sensors simplifies the hardware, leading to lower cost and higher reliability of the PV system. A novel scheme estimating the capacitors’ voltages from the ac output voltage of the inverter is developed. The scheme allows replacing all dc-side voltage sensors by a single-voltage sensor at the ac-side of the converter. Furthermore, the dc current sensors, conventionally required for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), are also eliminated. Instead, the outputs from the capacitors’ voltage control systems are utilized for the MPPT. In this paper, a model-predictive control (MPC) has been designed and implemented on the packed U-cell (PUC) inverter, which has one isolated dc source and one capacitor as an auxiliary dc link. The MPC is designed to regulate the capacitor voltage at the desired magnitude to have seven voltage levels at the output of the inverter. Since grid-connected application is targeted by this application, the inverter should be capable of supplying requested amount of active and reactive power at the point of common coupling (PCC) as well. Therefore, MPC should also consider the line-current control to monitor the exchange of reactive power with the grid while injecting appropriate active power at low total harmonic distortion (THD). Various experimental tests including change in dc-source voltage, active power variation, and operation at different power factor (PF) have been performed on a laboratory prototype to validate the good performance obtained by the proposed MPC. In this paper, a new topology for half-bridge switched boost inverter (HB-SBI) is proposed. The proposed half-bridge inverter uses more active elements rather than capacitors and inductors in comparison with the conventional half-bridge Z-source inverter with two Z-networks, which results in reduction of weight, size, and cost. Moreover, the proposed inverter has the capability of eliminating inverter leg short-circuit issues and is able to further increase the output voltage level in comparison with its conventional types. Generating zero-level output voltage is also another advantage of this topology. Based on theoretical calculations, the steady-state and small-signal analysis of the proposed topology in different operating modes are performed and the ripple of inductors’ current and capacitors’ voltage are also calculated. In this paper, a novel multilevel dc–ac inverter is proposed. The proposed multilevel inverter generates seven-level ac output voltage with the appropriate gate signals’ design. Also, the low-pass filter is used to reduce the total harmonic distortion of the sinusoidal output voltage. The switching losses and the voltage stress of power devices can be reduced in the proposed multilevel inverter. The operating principles of the proposed inverter and the voltage balancing method of input capacitors are discussed. Finally, a laboratory prototype multilevel inverter with 400-V input voltage and output 220\ \textV\text{rms}/2\,{\text{kW}} is implemented. The multilevel inverter is controlled with sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) by TMS320LF2407 digital signal processor (DSP). The flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI) is one of the well-known structures of multilevel inverters having attracted considerable attention because of its merits. In spite of its many advantages, it has some limitations such as high volume and complicated control method because of its bulky capacitors and their voltage balancing requirement. Moreover, the high number of power semiconductors required makes this structure susceptible to failure. To increase the ratio of the number of levels to the number of components, an uneven distribution of capacitor voltages has been suggested in previous reports; however, this approach complicates the control method. Up to now, almost all presented methods suffer from high computational load and/or structure-dependent algorithm. In this paper, a simple state-based and structure-independent method is proposed for capacitor voltage regulation. The proposed method is straightforward and can perform online computation of switching sequences in a computationally efficient manner without any need for stored information or look-up tables. The method is conveniently extendible to any number of cells and levels in an FCMLI structure with arbitrary dc link voltage distribution schemes. In this paper, a new inverter topology is proposed for generating a multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure for open-end winding induction motor (IM) using a single dc source. Dodecagonal voltage space vector structure eliminates fifth- and seventh-order harmonic voltages from phase voltage output and hence eliminates the fifth- and seventh-order harmonic currents through the motor leading to removal of the dominant sixth-order torque ripple generation in the motor over the entire modulation range. Multilevel space vector structure generates output voltage with better THD and low dv/dt. In the proposed topology, two three-level inverters drive an open-end winding IM, one inverter from each side. DC-link of primary inverter is from a dc source which delivers the entire active power, whereas the secondary inverter dc-link is maintained by a capacitor, which is self balanced during the inverter operation. The PWM scheme implemented ensures low switching frequency for primary inverter. Secondary inverter operates at a small dc-link voltage. Hence, switching losses are small for both primary and secondary inverters. Experimental results show the elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonic voltages over the entire modulation range, validating effectiveness of the proposed multilevel inverter scheme.
