Well-annotated training samples show necessity in achieving high performance of object detection, but collection of massive samples is extremely laborious and costly. Recently, cut-paste based methods show the potential to augment the training samples by cutting the foreground instances and pasting them on some background regions. However, existing cut-paste based methods hardly guarantee the quality of synthetic images due to lack of mechanism to ensure rationality of the pasted instances (e.g., context, geometry and diversity), limiting the effectiveness of data augmentation. To overcome above issues, this paper proposes a novel Constrained Online Cut-Paste (COCP) method, making an attempt to effectively and efficiently augment training data for improving performance of object detection. Specifically, our COCP generates synthetic images by switching instances of same class from various image pairs in each training mini-batch, ensuring context coherence between the cut instances and the pasted backgrounds. Furthermore, two constraints based on geometric consistency and sample diversity are developed to eliminate counterproductive and meaningless switched instances those suffer from significant geometric discrepancy or lack variations, further improving quality of the synthetic images. The experiments are conducted on both MS COCO and PASCAL VOC datasets using various state-of-the-art detectors (e.g., Faster R-CNN, RetinaNet, FCOS and Mask R-CNN). The results show that our proposed COCP can be well generalized to various datasets and detectors with clear performance gains, while performing favorably against its counterparts. In this paper, we propose a topology-cognizant optimal power flow (OPF) paradigm with additional safety constraints for multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) grids. The resulting formulation is concerned with the optimization of controller set-points, i.e., voltage and power levels at each bus, and the switching status of transmission lines that collectively referred to as grid topology. A pair of additional safety constraints are integrated into the problem formulation to prevent voltage violations caused by power fluctuations in between two controller set-point updates. Searching for a grid topology that offers more efficient operation leads to a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) which is computationally challenging due to: i) Non-convex power flow equations, (ii) Non-convex converter loss equations, and iii) Binary variables accounting for the operational status of transmission lines. Non-convexities of power flows and converter loss equations are tackled by means of a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) relaxation, while the optimal switching status of transmission lines are determined via a branch-and-bound search. Numerical results for the modified IEEE 14, 30, and 57-bus systems are used to verify the merits of the proposed method. In this paper, a methodology to solve the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) in electric power systems (EPS), considering discrete controllers, is proposed. Discrete controllers, such as the tap position of on-load tap changing (OLTC) transformers and switchable reactive shunt compensation, are optimized by the proposed method. A semidefinite relaxation (SDR) of the ORPD problem and a branch-and-bound (B&B) algorithm have been fully deployed. A new formulation is presented for the OLTC transformers to obtain a connected structure of the semidefinite programming (SDP) matrices. The customized B&B algorithm deals with the discrete nature of the binary control variables. Moreover, in order to enhance the convexification, valid inequalities called lifted nonlinear cuts (NLC) are implemented in the SDR. Additionally, a chordal decomposition technique is used to improve the computational performance. Finally, the B&B algorithm is used to solve the mixed-integer semidefinite programming problem. Several benchmarks have been used to show the accuracy and scalability of the proposed method, and convergence analysis shows that near-global optimal solutions are generated with small relaxation gaps. In this paper, the idea of offset spatial modulation (OSM) is integrated with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), toward an efficient design to bridge their advantages. Compared to its conventional counterpart as spatial modulation (SM)-OFDM, the proposed OSM-OFDM scheme aims at providing a simplified implementation structure with less number of radio frequency (RF) chains, by introducing an offset between the RF chain and the index of the activated transmit antenna on each subcarrier. Specifically, three types of offset antenna selection (OAS) methods are developed to meet different scene requirements for different number of available RF chains. Furthermore, through theoretical analysis, we quantify the bit error rate upper bounds of OSM-OFDM with different types of OAS methods. The implementation of finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) in voltage source inverters (VSIs) can make the system suffer from poor current harmonics performance, which may complicate the design of the required AC filter. To overcome this shortcoming, a carrier-based modulated model predictive control (CB-MMPC) strategy is proposed in this paper. This method enables the utilization of existing PWM modulation techniques with FCS-MPC, where a modulation waveform with zero-sequence signal injection is generated and compared to a triangular carrier wave, while optimizing the selection of the switching states. As it is shown, the studied CB-MMPC strategy not only considerably improves the current total harmonic distortion (THD) but also attains the performance of fast current dynamic response and robustness as the traditional FCS-MPC. Herein, the detailed implementation of the CB-MMPC control strategy is given, while considering its application to the current feedback control loop of a three-phase three-wire two-level VSI modulated at constant switching frequency. Finally, PLECS circuit simulation and a 3-kW VSI prototype are used to verify the superiority and the effectiveness of the presented CB-MMPC strategy. Conventionally, the converter of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is fed by the uncontrollable diode bridge rectifier (DBR), which leads to a low grid-side power factor (PF) and high current total harmonic distortion (THD). In this paper, an alternative solution for the grid-connected high-speed SRM drive system with improved PF is proposed. In the proposed drive system, the three-level active front end (AFE) is connected in cascade with the midpoint converter for SRM operation. A centralized strategy, which controls the AFE and SRM together, is proposed to govern the motor speed and grid-side PF by regulating the real power and reactive power of the system, respectively. Specifically, the real power, reactive power, and the voltage balancing of split capacitors are controlled by the model predictive directed power control (MP-DPC) algorithm, which significantly reduces the control complexity and guarantees the fast dynamic response. Consequently, satisfying speed regulation, high PF, low current THD, and bi-directional power-transfer capability are achieved. The belt-driven starter/generator (BSG), as a cost-effective solution, has been widely employed in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to improve the stability and reduce the fuel consumption of the vehicles. It can provide more than 10% reduction in CO2. Electrical machine is the heart of the BSG system, which is functioned both as motor and generator. In order to optimize both aspects of motor and generator simultaneously, this paper presents a new multimode optimization method for the switched reluctance machines. First, the general multimode concept and optimization method are presented. The switched reluctance motor and the switched reluctance generator are the two operation modes. The optimization models are established based on motor and generator functions. Sensitivity analysis, surrogate models and genetic algorithms are employed to improve the efficiency of the multimode optimization. Then, a design example of a segmented-rotor switched reluctance machine (SSRM) is investigated. Seven design variables and four driving modes are considered in the multiobjective optimization model. The Kriging model is employed to approximate the finite element model (FEM) in the optimization. Finally, the optimization results are depicted, and an optimal solution is selected. Multicasting is becoming more and more important in the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable applications (e.g., high definition video streaming, virtual reality gaming, public safety, among others) that require high bandwidth efficiency and low energy consumption. In this regard, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications can play a crucial role to efficiently disseminate large volumes of data as well as to enhance the throughput gain in fifth-generation (5G) and beyond networks. There are, however, challenges to face in view of providing multicast services with high data rates under the conditions of short propagation range caused by high path loss at mmWave frequencies. Indeed, the strong directionality required at extremely high frequency bands excludes the possibility of serving all multicast users via a single transmission. Therefore, multicasting in directional systems consists of a sequence of beamformed transmissions to serve all multicast group members, subgroup by subgroup. This paper focuses on multicast data transmission optimization in terms of throughput and, hence, of the energy efficiency of resource-constrained devices such as wearables, running their resource-hungry applications. In particular, we provide a means to perform the beam switching and propose a radio resource management (RRM) policy that can determine the number and width of the beams required to deliver the multicast content to all interested users. Achieved simulation results show that the proposed RRM policy significantly improves network throughput with respect to benchmark approaches. Network topology identification (TI) is an essential function for distributed energy resources management systems (DERMS) to organize and operate widespread distributed energy resources (DERs). In this paper, discriminant analysis (DA) is deployed to develop a network TI function that relies only on the measurements available to DERMS. The propounded method is able to identify the network switching configuration, as well as the status of protective devices. Following, to improve the TI resiliency against the interruption of communication channels, a quadratic programming optimization approach is proposed to recover the missing signals. By deploying the propounded data recovery approach and Bayes’ theorem together, a benchmark is developed afterward to identify anomalous measurements. This benchmark can make the TI function resilient against cyber-attacks. Having a low computational burden, this approach is fast-track and can be applied in real-time applications. Sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the contribution of different measurements and the impact of the system load type and loading level on the performance of the proposed approach. This paper presents and evaluates a discrete-event control-based Supervisory Controller (SC) for a grid-connected, battery-enabled, DC Fast-Charging (DCFC) station for Electric Vehicles’ (EVs). The SC enhances operational resiliency of the DCFC station and its host grid by decoupling the dynamics and limiting the steady-state power between the station and its host grid. The charging station includes multiple DCFC units, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a solar-PV unit, and a grid-interface Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC). The SC (i) limits the station-imported power from the grid based on the grid-imposed requirements, (ii) dynamically dispatches power flow among the grid, PV unit, DCFC units, and BESS to meet charging needs of EVs and when applicable charges BESS or exports power to the grid, (iii) protects the BESS by enforcing its state of charge upper and lower limits and the maximum charge/discharge rates, and (iv) enables the VSC to provide grid ancillary services, if required. Simulation results in PLECS software platform are given to assess the dynamic performance of the proposed SC in response to various discrete events/transitions. Operational performance in the low-voltage distribution network (LVDN) can be undermined by its inherent unbalances, which may become worse as the penetration of rooftop solar continuously increases. To address this issue, load balancing via phase-reconfiguration devices (PRDs), which can change phase positions of residential customers as required, provides a cost-efficient option. However, most reported approaches to control PRDs require that demands of all residential customers are available, which are not viable for many LVDNs without smart meters or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) installed. To bridging the gap in this field, this paper proposes a novel method to control PRDs purely based on measurable data from PRDs, and its controller. Based on limited information, sensitivity analysis in the network with PRDs is studied, followed by the optimization model that comprehensively considers operational requirements in the network. Moreover, slack variables are introduced to the model, and penalized in the objective function to assure either a strategy that is secure or with minimized violations can always be provided. The model is a challenging mixed-integer non-convex programming (MINCP) problem, which is reformulated as an efficient solvable mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) based on exact reformulations or accurate linear approximations. For Electro-Magnetic-Transient (EMT) simulations of power networks with switches, techniques such as linear interpolation and Critical Damping Adjustment (CDA) are widely used for improving numerical robustness. This paper analyzes the numerical stability of simulations with these techniques. Firstly, it is mathematically shown that the interpolation or CDA step is equivalent to the introduction of additional switching states. Subsequently, Common Quadratic Lyapunov Function (CQLF) theory is used to investigate the numerical stability of the whole simulation considering these new switching states. It is proved that the widely used strategies like linear interpolation and CDA always result a stable simulation if the original switched system is strictly passive in all switching states. Finally, it is shown that the developed approach can be used to determine the stability of other practical interpolation methods. Examples are provided to verify the proposed technique. Natural calamities always have been a serious threat to energy systems. In this regard, this paper constitutes a stochastic mixed integer linear programming (SMILP) model to enhance the resilience of power distribution systems to deal with disastrous events. In particular, the proposed model is developed to enhance both survivability and restoration capability of distribution systems. In this regard, to increase the preparedness of the power distribution system, the system operator reconfigures the network by utilizing remote-control switches (RCSs), manual switches (MSs), and distributed generations (DGs) before the natural calamity hits. The proposed model contemplates the traveling time of crew teams to the MS sites in the transportation system in order to achieve the best switching sequence. In addition, it pre-positions the crews and mobile emergency generators (MEGs) in staging locations to hasten the likely post-disturbance operations. To do so, likely post-event operations are included in the model using the scenario generation technique. To validate the performance of the developed model a distribution system is employed. In a line-commutated converter based high-voltage direct-current (LCC-HVDC) system, the inverter control system usually includes constant extinction angle (CEA) controller, constant current (CC) controller, current error controller (CEC), and voltage-dependent current order limiter (VDCOL). However, the interaction influence of multiple controllers may cause repetitive commutation failure (CF). For this purpose, this paper deeply investigates the mechanism and the influencing factors of repetitive CF caused by controller interaction. It is found that the lower limit value of CEA controller can affect the control switching process and thus the probability of repetitive CF. Besides, the minimum gamma measurement (MGM) unit prevents the system from acquiring the real extinction angle in time, which results in the DC current fluctuation during the recovery process. Moreover, the probability of control-induced repetitive CF is much higher when the HVDC inverter is connected to a weak AC system or the AC fault is not serious but not cleared in time. Based on the above analyses, an improved control method is proposed for recovery performance improvement, which is mainly realized by modifying the lower and upper limits of the CEA controller during recovery. With increasing penetration of solar PV, some distribution feeders are experiencing highly variable net-load flows and even reverse flows. To optimize distribution systems under such conditions, the scheduling of mechanical devices, such as OLTCs and capacitor banks, needs to take into account forecasted solar PV and actual grid conditions. However, these legacy switching assets are operated on a daily or hourly timescale, due to the wear and tear associated with mechanical switching, which makes them unsuitable for real-time control. Therefore, there is a natural timescale-separation between these slower mechanical assets and the responsive nature of inverter-based resources. In this paper, we present a network admissible convex formulation for holistically scheduling controllable grid assets to position voltage optimally against solar PV. An optimal hourly schedule is presented that utilizes mechanical resources to position the predicted voltages close to nominal values, while minimizing the use of inverter-based resources (i.e., DERs), making them available for control at a faster time-scale (after the uncertainty reveals itself). A convex, inner approximation of the OPF problem is adapted to a mixed-integer linear program that minimizes voltage deviations from nominal (i.e., maximizes voltage margins). The resulting OPF solution respects all the network constraints and is, hence, robust against modeling simplifications.Simulation based analysis on IEEE distribution feeders validates the approach. Isolated, zero-voltage-switching dc–dc converter topologies represent attractive solutions in the continuous run toward higher switching frequencies, allowing more compact power supplies. Among them, the asymmetrical half-bridge flyback converter represents an interesting option, featuring simple duty-cycle control at constant switching frequency, as opposed to the popular LLC converter. The majority of papers dealing with this topology consider an approximated voltage gain similar to that of an isolated buck converter operating in continuous conduction mode, i.e., proportional to the duty cycle and, practically, load independent. On the contrary, the true voltage gain is nonmonotonic at high duty-cycle values. Anytime the converter is designed for a resonant operation, as is advisable to eliminate any reverse recovery problem of the rectifier diode, the voltage gain not only increases, but also becomes a function of the switching frequency. This article investigates the converter's voltage gain in detail, deriving a theoretical framework capable of capturing its real behavior and dependencies. DC transformer is an essential equipment for formation of multi-voltage-level DC grid. This paper proposes a novel non-isolated Boost-type alternate arm DC transformer (Boost-AADCT) for medium- and high-voltage level DC grid application. The Boost-AADCT is comprised of three submodule-cascaded arms, two thyristor-cascaded director switches, and two buffer capacitors. Bidirectional power transmission is achieved by alternatively charging and discharging of the intermediate arm following the Boost principle, while the pulsating power component caused by intermittent transmission is actively smoothened by grid-side buffer subcircuits formed by the buffer capacitors and grid-side arms. The active power buffering method increases the tolerance range of voltage ripple of the buffer capacitor, and the required energy storage capacity is resultantly reduced. Circuit configuration, operation principle, and mathematical model are first introduced. Then, the control strategy is proposed, the main circuit parameters are designed, and bidirectional fault-blocking capability is analyzed. Comparison with other DC-DC converters shows that the Boost-AADCT significantly reduces the requirement of semiconductors and has relatively lower synthetic cost. The hybrid modular multilevel converter (HMMC), consisting of half-bridge and full-bridge submodules (SMs), has become a competitive topology due to the DC fault ride-through capability (FRTC). Redundancy schemes need to be employed to improve the reliability, including fixed-level and voltage-sharing active schemes, as well as passive scheme. However, different schemes affect reliability differently, which entails specific models. The contributions of this paper involve that analytical reliability models of HMMCs are proposed with considerations of voltage stress in active scheme, as well as imperfect bypass switch in passive scheme, and the comparison of different schemes is conducted to help the redundancy design. The reliability of HMMCs is divided into basic and extra components by the requirement of FRTC, which are modeled through the Markov chain and iteration method. A case study is conducted to validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed models, and the reliability analysis is presented, together with comparisons of different redundancy schemes. The results illustrate that reliability improvements of both fixed-level mode and passive scheme are prone to suffer saturation effect with the increase of redundant half-bridge SMs, which may even cause reliability decline in voltage-sharing mode. This paper presents a new control strategy using model-based predictive current control (MB-PCC) for a doubly fed induction machine (DFIM) driven by an indirect matrix converter (IMC). This strategy proposes the control of rotor currents, whose references are calculated from active and reactive stator power set points and the dynamic model of the DFIM. The control strategy works well in the four P-Q operating regions of the DFIM. The grid synchronization process is carried out by setting the P-Q power set points to zero. The results include the DFIM synchronization procedure as well as the active and reactive power control at variable shaft speed to validate the feasibility of the proposed strategy. In dc microgrid, energy storage system (ESS) plays a crucial role to provide short-or-long term and high-quality electric energy. The different control strategies for bidirectional dc-dc converter (BDC) of ESS in grid-tied and islanded modes pose challenges to the coordination control of the dc microgrid. This paper proposes an autonomous control scheme for the BDC in dc microgrid. The proposed control scheme is based on $V^2-P$ droop control and unifies bus voltage regulation and power regulation in a single control structure. Thus, global smooth transition between various operation modes can be achieved without any control strategy changes, which avoids various mode switch detection mechanisms and improves system stability. Furthermore, the proposed control scheme is fully decentralized which reduces the reliance on communication, and enhances the reliability of the microgrid. On the other hand, $V^2-P$ droop approach eliminates the negative effect of widespread constant power loads (CPLs) in dc microgrid. The stability of the proposed control method is illustrated, and the design guideline of some critical control gains is addressed. Induction motors have widely been used in industrial factories due to their simplicity of design and operation, low cost of maintenance. The most common approach for starting them is a direct-on-line (DOL) method. However, it produces a large transient torque, causing a shortened lifetime of mechanical rotating parts of the motor, driven load, and gearbox. Therefore, this paper presents a generalized zero-crossing switching approach to reduce an unnecessary peak torque amplitude during the DOL start. Unlike the conventional DOL technique, the proposed method requires zero-crossing detection. When a random closing command is initiated, one of the three-phase voltages that go to zero first is regarded as a referenced voltage for connecting a pair of the remaining two voltages simultaneously at the exact instant when it crosses the zero point. The motor is initially started under two-phase operating mode. After a given ½ cycle of delay time is expired, the referenced voltage is subsequently supplied for a continued operation in full three-phase mode. The experimental and simulation results confirm that the proposed technique can help to alleviate the starting transient torque peak arising from the serious drawback of the DOL starting. The quantum phase-slip junctions (QPSJs) resulting from quantum fluctuation of superconducting order parameter in 1-D superconducting nanowires are explained as exact duals to Josephson junctions (JJs). An overdamped QPSJ can generate a current pulse to emulate a spiking event in biological neurons. We have demonstrated spiking neuron circuits and synaptic circuits using QPSJs in our previous work through simulations in WRspice. The neuron circuit can fire a current pulse as soon as the capacitor voltage is above a threshold, which is similar to an integrate-and-fire neuron (IFN). The synaptic circuit, either based on magnetic JJs and QPSJs or only using QPSJs, functions as an adjustable weighted connection between neurons. To overcome existing problems, such as fan-out limitations, and further explore the possible applications of QPSJs in superconducting neuromorphic computing, we propose new neuromorphic circuits based on QPSJs and JJs in this paper. The neuron, synapse and fan-out circuits operate through the transfer of quantized charge or fluxons, providing circuit operations that emulate brain functions. Since the fabrication of reproducible QPSJ elements remains at a preliminary stage, the demonstration of our circuits design has been primarily done in WRspice simulation with a QPSJ SPICE model. The distributed propulsion aircraft with HTS electrical system is a novel concept for future airliners, which can reduce by more than 70% fuel burn and NOx emissions. The circuit breakers ensure the security of this novel aircraft by isolating electrical faults timely. Solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) are preferred due to their fast response and high performance in the cryogenic circumstance. However, the high conduction loss of SSCBs impedes their further application. A mechanical switch using liquid nitrogen (LN2) as an arc extinguishing medium shows excellent DC current interruption performance. The LN2 switch is characterized with extremely low contact resistance, and the proper use may reduce the conduction loss of power switches significantly. Nevertheless, the effect of metal type arc chutes on the arcing process in the LN2 is still not clear. Thus the objective of this paper is to understand the effect of metal type arc chutes on the current interruption performance of LN2. Silicon iron arc chutes are employed. Neodymium (NdFeB) magnets are used to stretch the arc into the arc chutes. The maximum interrupting current is 1 kV/ 2 kA when only magnets are applied. Further applying the arc chutes leads to a significant drop in the arc voltage and interruption performance. Since the high relative permeability of silicon iron weakens the magnetic field acting on the arc, metal type arc chutes are not recommended. 1 kV / 10 kA fault current is successfully cleared by the combination of resistance type superconducting fault current limiter (R-SFCL) and LN2 switch with magnets, during which the R-SFCL responds to the fault within 420 μs, compensating the long clear time of the LN2 switch. When a superconductor is exposed to an AC magnetic field whilst carrying a constant DC transport current, a DC electrical resistance can be observed, commonly referred to as “dynamic resistance”. This dissipative effect can play a critical role in many potential high-temperature superconducting (HTS) applications, especially for the AC-field-actuated HTS switch, which is the key component in the HTS transformer-rectifier flux pump (TRFP). The characteristics of the HTS switch determine the performance and reliability of TRFP. In this paper, we report a numerical study of a new HTS switch design made of series-connected YBCO stacks. This study aims to obtain insights into the characteristics of dynamic resistance and power loss, including their relationships with the amplitude and the frequency of the AC magnetic field. In the domain of data parallel computation, most works focus on data flow optimization inside the PE array and favorable memory hierarchy to pursue the maximum parallelism and efficiency, while the importance of data contents has been overlooked for a long time. As we observe, for structured data, insights on the contents (i.e., their values and locations within a structured form) can greatly benefit the computation performance, as fine-grained data manipulation can be performed. In this paper, we claim that by providing a flexible and adaptive data path, an efficient architecture with capability of fine-grained data manipulation can be built. Specifically, we design SOM, a portable and highly-adaptive data transmission network, with the capability of operand sorting, non-blocking self-route ordering and multicasting. Based on SOM, we propose the processing-in-transmission architecture (PITA), which extends the traditional SIMD architecture to perform some fundamental data processing during its transmission, by embedding multiple levels of SOM networks on the data path. We evaluate the performance of PITA in two irregular computation problems. We first map the matrix inversion task onto PITA and show considerable performance gain can be achieved, resulting in 3×-20× speedup against Intel MKL, and 20×-40× against cuBLAS. Then we evaluate our PITA on sparse CNNs. The results indicate that PITA can greatly improve computation efficiency and reduce memory bandwidth pressure. We achieved 2×-9× speedup against several state-of-art accelerators on sparse CNN, where nearly 100 percent PE efficiency is maintained under high sparsity. Soft normally open points (SNOPs) connected to distribution networks are instrumental in maintaining uninterrupted power supply and improving power quality during the fault period. In order to achieve the optimal service restoration scheme, a novel bi-level service restoration model based on the robust optimization method is proposed in this paper. The upper level of the proposed model aims at minimizing the risk of load loss. The switch statuses and range of power transmitted by SNOP terminals can be obtained. In the lower level of the model, the interval robust optimization method is adopted to cope with the uncertainties of DGs and loads. If there are no optimal solutions, the upper level model needs to be solved once more to adjust the network topology. Finally, a test system is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and solution method. This paper describes a power system inertia estimation method that utilizes power perturbations caused by the flow switch on an HVDC interconnector. The analysis is performed using real power system measurements from Ireland's all-island power system. The method employs an energy based estimation technique which permits a non-step power change to be used for inertia calculation and encapsulates the challenges associated with the use of real data. While it is shown that synchronous generators account for most of the power system inertia, other contributors are also investigated, namely power station auxiliary load, distributed generation and power system demand. This paper tackles key industry needs in the scope of the AC Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (SCOPF) framework, specifically two major challenging requirements regarding generators’ post-contingency behavior: the (droop-based) frequency response and the voltage control mechanism (including PV/PQ switching). To this end, and to obtain a sufficiently accurate solution with a reasonable computational burden, we propose an approximation approach to SCOPF which extends significantly an existing algorithm with novel modelling elements: a continuous formulation to model generators’ post-contingency responses based on successive approximations, a technique to evaluate the viability of contingencies with respect to the base case set-points, and the complexity reduction of all post-contingency states through network compression and power flow piecewise linearization. All new features are validated both separately and in unison, to monitor the improvement of the solution time and the potential degradation of the solution's quality. The proposed approach is successfully applied to three power system network models, the largest of which consists of 2,000 buses and more than 3,000 contingencies. Current harmonics are ubiquitous in dual three phase (DTP) permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives. Due to back electromotive force (EMF) distortion, significant current harmonics are generated in the DTP-PMSM system. The influence of back EMF harmonics is investigated in this paper and a novel switching-table-based direct torque control method to compensate the selected current harmonics caused by the back EMF harmonics is proposed. It shows that by employing different optimal action time durations for voltage vectors in the z1z2 subspace and setting the synthetic voltage vectors to non-zero, the stator flux harmonics caused by the back EMF harmonics can be selectively compensated, as verified by experiments. This paper investigates the cluster event-triggered tracking cooperative and formation control for multivehicle systems with nonlinear vehicles dynamics under switching directed communication topologies and safety missions. By employing the cluster event-triggered control strategy, the assumption of continuous feedback control gains and the condition of information exchange limited in a small domain can be relaxed. By constructing an appropriate tracking cooperative condition, a class of cluster event-triggered tracking cooperative control law with an extended magnification region condition is proposed based on bounded parameters and intermittent event samples. When the safety tasks are activated, it is displayed in terms of linear matrix inequalities that the tracking cooperative control for closed-loop multivehicle systems subject to nonlinear vehicles dynamics will be achieved, if the constructed sampling condition and the dwell time constraint of switching communication scenarios can be held. In this paper, the problem of sliding mode control (SMC) is considered for a class of nonlinear continuous-time Markov jump systems (MJSs) with uncertainties and time delay. A novel integral-type switching sliding surface function is designed, where the controller gain may jump asynchronously with original MJSs. Then, an SMC law is constructed to force system trajectories onto the specified switching sliding surface in a finite time. The stochastic stability and dissipative performance of sliding mode dynamics are analyzed and the delay-dependent sufficient condition for the existence of the desired switching surface is developed. Moreover, we also extend SMC to investigate the finite-time stability problem during both reaching phase and sliding motion phase in the stochastic setting. This paper deals with the dissipative control and filtering problems for the discrete-time two-dimensional (2-D) switched Fornasini–Marchesini (FM) systems. First, the definition of 2-D TSR-θ-dissipativity for the FM systems is introduced. By employing the switched quadratic Lyapunov function technique and establishing multiple recursive formulas, sufficient conditions are developed to guarantee that the considered system is asymptotically stable under the arbitrary switching signal (ASS) case and exponentially stable under the restricted switching signal (RSS) case with the 2-D TSR-θ-dissipativity, respectively. The special cases, such as the 2-D passivity performance and the 2-D H∞ performance, are also discussed. Based on the obtained dissipative stability conditions, the 2-D TSR- θ-dissipative state feedback controller and filter design problems are further studied for the addressed system. This paper deals with event-triggered H∞ filtering problem for switched continuous-time systems with quantization. A multiple periodic sampling-based event-triggering strategy is adopted to select those “necessary” sampled signals to be transmitted. As a result, the amount of communication and the frequency of signal updates can be reduced significantly. Regarding the nonideal communication network, we consider network-induced delays and packet disorders, which are common during packet transmission through networks. In order to cope with packet disorders, an active packet loss approach is introduced. As such, a new time-delay system model is established, by which the filtering error system is modeled as a switched system with an interval time-varying delay. Then, by employing piecewise Lyapunov functional method and average dwell time technique, some criteria are derived to ensure that the filtering error system can achieve a prescribed level of $H_\infty $ performance. Moreover, the relationship between switching instants and the data updating instants in filter is discussed in detail, and the filter gains and event-triggering parameters can be jointly designed in terms of solutions to some linear matrix inequalities. This paper develops a resilience analysis framework to study the fault ride-through capability of direct current (DC) microgrids in unknown denial of service (DoS) cyber incidents. DoS can be a frequent threat to DC microgrids with advanced controllers that hinge on active information exchanges: it can paralyze data communications and cause control ineptness or even system instability. Furthermore, we show that temporal DoS incidents render the DC microgrid cyber-physical topology and parameters time-varying and cause them to jump between faulty conditions. As existing DC microgrid stability analysis results are primarily developed from time-invariant systems, they might not be valid for the DoS interrupted systems. In this paper, we seek to study whether a DC microgrid is resilient against time-varying unknown DoS incidents. The problem is formulated as a stability analysis problem for a system with randomly switching dynamics. Scalable conditions are developed to provide provable resilience guarantees. In addition, we exploit the special structure of the conditions to yield quantified resilience measure by convex optimization techniques. The measure can be used for the evaluation of the resilience of different DC microgrid design against DoS incidents. This paper proposes a capacitor voltage regulation method for the dual converter with a floating bridge for aerospace applications. This topology has previously been reported, but with a constrained voltage utilization factor due to the need for capacitor voltage regulations. In this paper, the effect of switching states on the voltage variation of capacitor is quantitatively modeled and an enhanced space vector modulation scheme with current feedback is proposed to achieve an active control of the floating capacitor voltages. This proposed method also allows further exploitation and utilization of converter voltage. The relationship between the allowed modulation index of dual converter and load power factor is obtained and expressed using a fitted polynomial equation. The advantages of the proposed method include boosted voltage utilization and superior performance in term of capacitor voltage balance. These advantages have been proven through simulation and experimental results on RL loads as well as with an open-end winding induction motor. The proposed modulation scheme can boost the converter voltage utilization by at least 10% while achieving full four-level operation. This paper proposes a visible light communication (VLC) system consisting of a single-stage buck–boost power factor correction converter operating in the discontinuous conduction mode with dimming capability. Additionally, this paper proposes the on–off M-frequency shift keying modulation for the VLC system. This modulation allows for the transmission of more than a single bit for each switching period without affecting the dimming characteristics of the light-emitting diode luminaire. The design of the whole system is discussed in detail, including both transmitter and receiver modules. A 20-W laboratory prototype was built in order to verify the proposed modulation scheme. The experimental evaluation showed a good performance of the transmitter, which was able to perform simultaneously the desired functions, namely power factor correction, dimming, and data transmission. The receiver also achieved the desired performance with a low bit error rate (BER). The results showed that the proposed system was able to transfer data between emitter and receiver with a bit rate of 1.11 Mb/s at a frequency of up to 375 kHz over a distance of 10 m, and with a BER lower than $10^{-3}$ under the influence of external lighting sources with illuminance levels up to 500 lx. The extra-LC auxiliary-resonant-snubber-based converter (ELCARSC), as a soft-switching converter, has the advantages of low switching loss, low electromagnetic interference noise, and low-output distortion caused by the dead-time effect. However, the dead-time effect is still the main problem in a high-precision application. Besides, the traditional control and compensation methods rely on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the junction capacitance, thus resulting in compensation error. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel high-precision control method through modulating the initial resonant current to eliminate the dead-time effect of ELCARSC. The method does not need complicated online calculation and reduces the dependence on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the influence of the junction capacitances of the switches. In this paper, the dead-time effect of the ELCARSC is analyzed. The output voltage error with the conventional variable-timing control method is analyzed. Subsequently, the proposed modulated initial resonant current control is introduced. Finally, a prototype was developed that verified the effectiveness of the control method. Impedance-based criteria are often used for assessing the stability of cascaded converter systems. In this paper, it is pointed out that the switching ripple interaction (SRI) between the source converter and the load converter in a cascaded system would change the gain of the pulsewidth modulation of the source converter, causing the cut-off frequency and the phase margin of the source converter to change accordingly. Thus, even if a cascaded system is shown to be stable under an impedance-based criterion, it can, in fact, be unstable due to the SRI. This paper proposes an adaptive modulation sample-and-hold method for eliminating the effect of the SRI. A 48 V–12 V–5 V cascaded system consisting of two buck converters is tested for verification. This paper proposes a control method for a switching power converter. This converter is connected to a dc-link of a dc microgrid system via an LC input filter. This control method is based on a Lyapunov stability analysis; all state variables are acquired for evaluating stability analysis, including the output current for calculating the load resistance. To reduce a number of sensor counts, the input current is estimated. Moreover, loss occurrence in the converter is observed to reduce static errors of the controlled state variables, especially the output voltage. The losses are modeled as a series input voltage source observed from the dc–dc converter and a parallel current source. The latter enables us to eliminate the output current sensor. Using information from the estimated current source, a load resistance can be calculated. A Lyapunov function candidate is chosen to ensure that the system, including the observer, operates in a stable manner. Based on evaluating the time-derivative of the chosen Lyapunov function, we obtain the switching command that makes the system operate stably in each sampling cycle. With the reduction of wafer batch size on account of the diversification and individuation of consumption demands, increasing importance has been attached to the schedulability and controllability of the cluster tools with multiple wafer types being concurrently processed, while the corresponding research is seldom and still open. This paper is devoted to addressing the steady-state scheduling of single-arm cluster tools with multiple wafer types and residency time constraints. Inspired by the definition of wafer flow pattern for the single wafer type, a novel description for the multiple wafer types is introduced. For the sake of efficiency and simplicity, the multiplex backward sequence is proposed. To balance the workload of process steps, a virtual module technology with a two-tiered architecture is implemented. Furthermore, several sufficient and necessary conditions are derived to verify the schedulability of the system. Finally, an efficient algorithm is presented to find the periodic steady-state schedule, and its practicability and availability are validated by the given illustrative examples. Note to Practitioners—Cluster tools are a kind of highly automated, flexible, and integrated equipment applied widely in diversified semiconductor fabrication processes. Due to the strictness of processing constraints and unavailability of in-built buffers, it is challenging to effectively operate cluster tools. For a higher utilization of processing modules, fabs tend to concurrently process several kinds of wafers with dissimilar recipes in a cluster tool. However, the related scheduling and control problems remain open. With residency time constraints, this paper addresses the scheduling problems of single-arm cluster tools with multiple wafer types. By dissecting the mechanism of mixed-processing of multiple wafer types, several formal conditions are obtained to test the schedulability. Based on the multiplex backward sequence, a cyclic scheduling approach to single-arm cluster tools with multiple wafer types is presented. We propose, in this paper, an observer-based nonlinear feedback controller for four degrees of freedom (4-DOF) offshore ship-mounted tower cranes, which includes a robust-type term to address the observation uncertainty, and a switching logic tuning mechanism to update the involved unknown parameter. As a typical nonlinear underactuated mechatronic system, unlike the land-fixed tower cranes, an offshore ship-mounted tower crane also suffers from persistent disturbances caused by sea waves or currents, which leads to many difficulties and challenges in the controller design of such systems. Existing offshore crane control methods require either linearizations or approximations when performing analysis; moreover, most of them are only applicable for simplified 2-DOF crane models, and the ranges of system state errors cannot be guaranteed during the overall process. Motivated by these facts, to achieve simultaneous accurate jib/trolley positioning and fast payload swings suppression against complex unknown external disturbances, in particular, a disturbance observer is first designed in this paper, based on which a novel nonlinear switching logic-based control scheme for offshore cranes with jib rotation and horizontal transportation is proposed. As far as we know, the proposed method yields the first observer-based feedback closed-loop control without simplification operations to the original 4-DOF offshore tower crane dynamics and achieves the first asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system’s equilibrium point for offshore cranes. To support the theoretical derivation, the corresponding stability analysis of the closed-loop system’s equilibrium point is implemented by Lyapunov techniques. Numerous simulation and hardware experimental results are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method. Note to Practitioners—This paper is motivated by the issue of controlling a four- degree-of-freedom (4-DOF) offshore ship-mounted tower crane system under the effects of unknown external disturbances. In practical applications, the persistent disturbances caused by sea waves or currents can always happen and make the offshore crane operation very challenging. Moreover, it brings more difficulties in the controller design for such a system due to its nonlinear underactuated property. Existing control approaches for offshore cranes are developed based upon linearized or oversimplified crane models or require exact model knowledge, and they may not work well in the presence of harsh sea conditions. Toward this end, this paper suggests a new control approach for 4-DOF offshore tower cranes suffering from sea wave effects to achieve a satisfactory performance. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system’s equilibrium point is derived, implying that the accurate jib/trolley positioning and fast payload swings suppression against complex unknown external disturbances are achieved simultaneously. Preliminary physical experiments implemented on a self-built offshore tower crane hardware test bed verify the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed observer-based control method. Motors and inverters are increasingly being used in vehicles. As more vehicle components are being adopted, requirement for safety and installation space are increasing. Growing attention is being paid to the use of six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and their parallel control by two inverters, because of their reduced size and enhanced safety. This paper proposes a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control algorithm for a six-phase PMSM. In low-voltage vehicle components such as electric power steering, the current is usually acquired with resistors placed under the low-side switching devices. In the proposed control algorithm, the neutral voltage of the two inverters is shifted to either a lower or higher voltage within a certain range to allow for the signal conditioning time delay after the switching device turns on or off, and the time taken for the phase current to rise or settle. The paper proposes a novel PWM control algorithm that ensures that the on-time of the low-side switching devices satisfies the restriction on current sensing with resistors and reduces the current in the capacitor at the same time. A trinary multilevel converter uses a few heterogeneous H-bridge submodules (SMs) to synthesize an output voltage with multiple levels. Two major limitations of this converter are that it needs multiple dc sources and it cannot operate under pulsewidth modulation (PWM). This paper addresses these limitations by adding a low-voltage H-bridge SM to this converter and proposing a new switching algorithm. The resulting PWM-based asymmetric cascaded H-bridge converter uses only one dc source and synthesizes a high-quality output voltage. This improved converter can be a potential choice for real and reactive power support in power system applications. This paper also proposes methods for stability analysis and design of this converter. In this paper, we investigate the additivity phenomenon in the quantum dynamic capacity region of a quantum channel for trading the resources of classical communication, quantum communication, and entanglement. Understanding such an additivity property is important if we want to optimally use a quantum channel for general communication purposes. However, in a lot of cases, the channel one will be using only has an additive single or double resource capacity region, and it is largely unknown if this could lead to a strictly superadditive double or triple resource capacity region, respectively. For example, if a channel has additive classical and quantum capacities, can the classical-quantum capacity region be strictly superadditive? In this paper, we answer such questions affirmatively. We give proof-of-principle requirements for these channels to exist. In most cases, we can provide an explicit construction of these quantum channels. The existence of these superadditive phenomena is surprising in contrast to the result that the additivity of both classical-entanglement and classical-quantum capacity regions imply the additivity of the triple resource capacity region for a given channel. The six-phase asymmetrical induction motors (SPIMs) are employed for high power medium voltage drive due to its attractive features of reduced stator copper loss, lower torque pulsation, higher torque per ampere, and higher reliability. In this paper, analysis of carrier-comparison-based pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques namely sinusoidal PWM and double zero-sequence injection PWM are carried out from a space vector perspective. Furthermore, new space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) techniques are developed by modifying the switching sequences of carrier-based PWM techniques. A comprehensive analysis of these PWM techniques is carried out in terms of harmonic flux trajectories, squared harmonic flux, and harmonic distortion factor (HDF). As a result, modified SVPWM technique namely 6ΦSVM3 is found superior to aforesaid PWM techniques, which significantly reduces HDF and provides lower current total harmonic distortion (THD). The experimental results of aforementioned PWM techniques are obtained and verified from six phase asymmetrical induction motor fed by dual two-level 3ΦVSIs. This paper studies the driving of white light emitting diodes (LEDs) from very low voltages in the 1.2 to 2 V range. The proposed idea is based on replacing the standard Schottky diode used in conventional converter topologies (i.e., buck, buck–boost, and boost) with an LED while shortcutting the output of the converter. In this configuration, the LED works both as the load and the rectifier diode of the converter, hence switching the LED at high frequencies (>100 kHz). Moreover, a thorough analytical study is carried out for the two topologies proposed in this paper, emphasizing in particular their static analysis and the obtaining of the boundaries between the different conduction modes. Finally, the idea is experimentally validated by means of the boost converter variation (i.e., the DL//S ac-LED driver). The DL//S ac-LED driver was also compared with a dc–dc boost converter, showing a better luminous efficacy while disposing of the Schottky diode and the output capacitor. This paper has introduced two important indexes, turn-off surge voltage (TSV) on power switch and peak positive pole potential (PPPP) of storage batteries, which can be used to evaluate switching transient process of high-voltage energy storage system. Research on them is of great significance to power switch choice and high-voltage isolation design in engineering applications. Power switch response process at the turning off moment and transient process in freewheel stage have been analyzed by the established small-signal model of single power switch; then, a power switch test platform for hybrid energy storage system was built to verify it. Taking pulsed-power supply charging device with a novel inductor of low resistance and high inductance as a research object, this paper has analyzed dynamic process of the TSV and the PPPP at the turning off moment through establishing state space model of the whole system. Comparison shows that the numerical curves match the simulated curves well. Finally, the exactness of the employed model has been further verified in two pulse capacitor charging experiments. The huge untapped energy from ocean waves is one of the ideal solutions for world energy crisis. This paper proposes a linear-generator-based direct power conversion plant model to generate the electrical energy from ocean waves. The linear generator output is of variable magnitude and variable frequency in nature. In this paper, this variable output is converted to fixed dc voltage by using a diode bridge rectifier and a dc-link capacitor. The linear generator along with a diode bridge and a capacitor forms a wave power unit. These wave power units can be connected in series and parallel to meet the power ratings. A reliable multilevel inverter is fed from the wave power units to ensure uninterrupted tapping of power from this abundant renewable energy source. The reliable inverter operation is analyzed under open- and short-circuit faults in switches by reconfiguring the carrier waves of sine pulsewidth modulation during fault conditions. A fault detection algorithm using a single sensor at the output is also proposed to detect the faults in the switches of the proposed reliable inverter. The proposed plant model with a linear generator and a reliable inverter is simulated using ANSYS MAXWELL and MATLAB/Simulink. The plant model is tested using a programmable ac source for emulating the linear generator and the developed prototype of the diode bridge rectifier and the reliable multilevel inverter. In this paper, the pulsewidth modulation switch method was used to investigate the effect of the transformer leakage inductance on the small-signal model in isolated full-bridge converter. A galvanic isolated hard-switching full-bridge converter that operates in constant-current mode is analyzed, confirming that leakage inductance significantly affects the small-signal model, and the influence of leakage inductance can be equivalent to a resistance in series with the converter's output LC filter just as that in phase-shifted full-bridge converter. This paper discusses electrical distribution for refrigerated containers (reefers) in port terminals, characterized as parks of uniform distributed loads. Power systems of uniform distributed loads need configurations with modularity whenever possible, to ensure an easier installation, operation, and maintenance with significant cost reductions. This paper shows what has been the practice at ports in the past to provide Low Voltage (LV) supply to reefers from medium voltage (MV)/LV substations to cluster of reefer outlets panel with group of outdoor receptacles, used to connect power supply cord to each reefer. In the new method of power distribution system for the reefers, it is suggested to use a main MV underground distribution and portable containerized MV/LV transformer substations with close coupled LV distribution panel including reefer outlets. This potable power supply unit can be installed inside the reefer racks to supply locally a modular LV distribution to the reefers. This new method of supplying power to reefer racks has benefits over the past practice. It can offer a relevant flexibility for expansions and endorses development of new fitting components.
