Purpose: Canadian new immigrant families (also known as newcomers) encounter challenges navigating systems when trying to access programmes critical for their children's healthy development. The purpose of this study is to understand how newcomer families find and use early childhood programmes and services from the perspective of families and early childhood educators (ECEs) working within a settlement organization. Methods: Using photovoice methodology, newcomer family members (n = 8) with young children and ECEs (n = 6) participated in a series of virtual workshops to share photos and reflect on their experiences. Results: Participants discussed the systemic barriers that obstructed newcomer families' access to services for young newcomer children. Financial challenges due to unemployment/ underemployment, language and cultural differences were emphasized. Despite these barriers and challenges, participants shared how culturally responsive programmes enhanced their connections to programmes and services. Both groups of participants discussed the critical role of social networks in supporting newcomers to use programmes by helping families become aware of available services and assistance with various processes such as registration. Conclusions: This research illustrates the lived experiences of newcomer families and identifies opportunities to address inequities, improve early childhood programmes, and enhance families' access to programmes and services. Tuberculosis health care workers (TB HCWs) in low incidence settings have important perspectives on providing TB education and counselling to patients and family members born in other countries. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore HCWs' perspectives on barriers and facilitators for capacity-building education and counselling with patients and family members born outside of Canada experiencing advanced infectious TB in Calgary, a city in western Canada. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and field notes and thematically analysed. Twenty-four HCWs representing clerical staff, nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals employed in TB care were interviewed. HCWs described how multi-level barriers such as patients' fear of death, complex intra-family communication, information-laden appointments, and patients' precarious employment collided resulting in overwhelmed patients and reduced connection to family. Some HCWs were unsure how to discuss TB stigma with patients and family members. HCWs perceived that increased continuity of care and providing patients and family members with digestible amounts of information earlier were important steps towards better practice. HCWs identified that patients and families could benefit from preparation for initial appointments, increased continuity, and improved patient education materials. Correctional populations with opioid use disorder experience increased health risks during community transition periods. Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) can reduce these risks, but retention is a key challenge. This study addresses a knowledge gap by describing facilitators and barriers to OAT engagement among federal correctional populations released into the community in Ontario, Canada. This article describes results from a longitudinal mixed-methods study examining OAT transition experiences among thirty-five individuals released from federal incarceration in Ontario, Canada. Assessments were completed within one year of participants' release. Data were thematically analyzed. The majority (77%) of participants remained engaged in OAT, however, 69% had their release suspended and 49% returned to custody. Key facilitators for OAT engagement included flexibility, positive staff rapport, and structure. Fragmented OAT transitions, financial OAT coverage, balancing reintegration requirements, logistical challenges, and inaccessibility of 'take-home' OAT medications were common barriers. Post-incarceration transition periods are critical for OAT retention, yet individuals in Ontario experience barriers to OAT engagement that contribute to treatment disruptions and related risks such as relapse and/or re-incarceration. Additional measures to support community OAT transitions are required, including improved discharge planning, amendments to OAT and financial coverage policies, and an expansion of OAT options. Essential family caregivers (EFCs) of relatives living in long-term care homes (LTCHs) experienced restricted access to their relatives due to COVID-19 visitation policies. Residents' experiences of separation have been widely documented; yet, few have focused on EFCs' traumatic experiences during the pandemic. Objective: This study aims to explore the EFCs' trauma of being locked out of LTCHs and unable to visit their loved ones in-person during COVID-19. Seven online focus groups with a total of 30 EFCs from Ontario and British Columbia, Canada were conducted as part of a larger mixed-method study. We used an inductive approach to thematic analysis to understand the lived experiences of trauma. Four trauma-related themes emerged: 1) trauma from prolonged separation from loved ones; 2) trauma from uncompassionate interactions with the LTCH's staff and administrators; 3) trauma from the inability to provide care to loved ones, and 4) trauma from experiencing prolonged powerlessness and helplessness. The EFCs experienced a collective trauma that deeply impacted their relationships with their relatives as well as their perception of the LTC system. Experiences endured by EFCs highlighted policy and practice changes, including the need for trauma-centred approaches to repair relational damage and post-pandemic decision-making that collaborates with EFCs. The experiences of African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) Canadians are seldom explored in the Canadian context. Family physicians act as a gateway to the rest of the healthcare system and are necessary to provide proper patient care. However, Canada's history with colonialism may impact the socio-cultural context in which patients receive care. 41 participants from Waterloo Region, Ontario, were engaged in eight focus groups to discuss their experiences in the healthcare system. Data were analysed following thematic analysis. Style of care, racism and discrimination and a lack of cultural competence hindered access. oor Inadequate cultural competence was attributed to western and biomedical approaches, poor understanding of patients' context, physicians failing to address specific health concerns, and racism and discrimination. Participants highlighted that the two facilitators to care were having an ACB family physician and fostering positive relationships with physicians. Participants predominantly expressed dissatisfaction in physicians' approaches to care, which were compounded by experiences of racism and discrimination. Findings demonstrate how ACB patients are marginalized and excluded from the healthcare syste Iimplications for better access to care included utilizing community healthcare centres, increasing physicians' capacity around culturally inclusive care, and increasing access to ACB physicians. Purpose: To explore how people with end stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their family members describe living in the face of impending death. Methods: A narrative inquiry was undertaken using a social constructionist perspective. Data were collected in 2017–18 in two in-depth interviews, lasting 90 to 120 minutes approximately 3–4 months apart, with a telephone follow-up 2–3 months later. Thematic analysis was conducted including analysis within and across participants. Results: Sixteen people with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and seven family members participated. For both people with the disease and family members, six key themes/storylines emerged including missing life, being vigilant, hope and realism, avoiding death talk, the scary dying process, and need to prepare. Conclusion: This study highlighted six key storylines about death and dying with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for people with the illness and their family members. The participants with the illness and their family members held similar perceptions about end of life. More supports are needed for people with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their family members in living with their illness while ensuring that they experience a "good death."
