Purpose How can people with lived experience of homelessness actively participate in contesting their marginalisation? The purpose of this paper is to suggest that involving people who are homeless in participatory action research (PAR) is one such strategy. This paper shows that such an approach can have a significant impact on empowering people with direct of experience of homelessness to challenge prevailing social discourses, particularly in terms of the way in which the local media presents homelessness as a social issue.Design/methodology/approach A PAR approach informed the design, development and dissemination of the study on which this paper is based. Analytically, it is underpinned by Foucauldian discourse analysis (FDA). FDA, with its focus on power relations in society, is noted to be particularly useful for analysing local media representations of homeless people.Findings The research reported here found that academic practitioners and homeless people can work together to challenge media discourses, which serve to marginalise people affected by homelessness.Research limitations/implications The research reported here served to challenge some of the ways in homeless people are victimized and stigmatized.Practical implications The research reported here has the potential to inform future research concerned with understanding media presentations of homeless people. It can be seen as a model for how people affected by a particularly pernicious social issue can contribute to research in ways that go beyond researching for the sake of research.Originality/value The research reported here provides evidence of the emancipatory value of research that seeks to bring academic practitioners and homeless people together in a partnership to challenge vital social issues such as the power of the local media to frame understandings of homelessness. In 2010, the Galleries of Modern London opened at the Museum of London, and included a re-making of London's Pleasure Gardens. Using an embedded ethnographic perspective at the museum, this paper explores the re-making of the gardens, and looks in detail at how and why the museum chose the gardens to explore London's history as a changing city. The gardens display required an ambitious combination of objects and display technologies, such as historic costume, film projections, Philip Treacy hats, object reproductions, specially made mannequins, and a soundscape, and this paper discusses the production and composition of these components. Reflecting on the gardens' place in London's history, the paper identifies what the gardens offer contemporary understandings of the city's past and the role of pleasure in public history. The field of Victorian Studies has developed in recent years to encompass narratives of the Victorians across a variety of media and cultural forms. Little has been written, however, on the different Victorianisms at play in museums and heritage sites, many of them Victorian in both origin and content. Taking their cue from the literature and theory of Museum Studies and drawing on a professional and academic background in museums, the authors of this paper provide an overview of the present state of museum displays on the Victorians. It is a situation driven by new commercial pressures, funding cuts and blockbuster exhibitions, occurring at the same time as a push for greater access and more diverse narratives. To outline these developments in greater detail, this paper takes examples from a series of case study sites of Victorian-themed museum displays in Yorkshire. It demonstrates that there has been a growing emphasis on narratives that depart from traditional museum presentations of Victorian elites, particularly with regard to class and gender. This can be seen as a positive step in terms of public engagement with diverse Victorianisms, but there remains work to be done. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper will focus on the place of black history in heritage sites in England and discuss how visual methodologies can be used to develop a more inclusive approach to heritage. It will argue that visual archives, from portraits of the aristocracy to asylum portraits, are an essential part of the research process for heritage site staff who are assessing how they connect to (potential) visitors. The paper highlights examples that illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of using the visual record for historical recovery and suggests how visual methodologies can be used to encourage greater participation with historic environments. The annual fetes, bazaars, and dinners associated with Dr Barnardo's nineteenth-century philanthropic enterprises constituted elaborate public spectacles. This paper focuses in particular on the Annual Meetings held in high-profile venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in the 1890s. Layered audiences, thousands of spectators from the middle classes to royalty, watched as thousands of children performed what Barnardo called 'panoramas' -orchestrated tableaux of Barnardo-style successes unfolding in a cavalcade with military precision. This essay constructs a snapshot as framed through the media, including Barnardo's own periodical (Night and Day) and daily papers such as The Illustrated London News. The discussion first contextualizes the display of charity children, then describes Barnardo's characteristic 'show', a programme of 'acts' incorporating aspects of popular theatrical genres, from sensation theatre to freak and baby shows. That is, although the evangelical Barnardo condemned the theatre outright, he nevertheless engaged in highly theatrical productions for the purposes of raising awareness, affect and funds. Ultimately, this essay uncovers another paradox: Barnardo couched his investment in individuality and cottage industry in discourse ironically associated with mass production. His argument was economic and his evidence embodied: Annual Meetings offered visual, empirical 'proof' that even a few weeks of Barnardo's corrective training successfully transformed human 'material' into 'finished products' with the smallest investment. This paper explores George Henry Harlow's portrait of the comic actor Charles Mathews entitled ‘A Group of portraits of Mr Mathews, in private, and in various characters’ which was exhibited at the annual Royal Academy exhibition in London in 1814. The purpose of the paper is to consider the ‘referential multivocality’ of the theatrical portrait which not only represents the actor and several of his characters in a highly unusual way, but also arguably contributes to critical discourse around acting in early nineteenth-century England. The display of the classical antiquities in the Fitzwilliam Museum changed dramatically between 1848, when the Museum opened, and 1898. At first sight, it appears to be a transition from disorder to order, ‘muddle’ to scientific classification. This paper investigates that transition. Drawing on Museum and University archives, it outlines the history of the growth of the classical collection over the first fifty years of the Fitzwilliam, in the context of the history of the Museum in general. It argues that – far from disorder to order – we see a shift between two different regimes of museum display and ‘ways of seeing’, one focused on the history of the objects through their donors to the museum; the other focused on archaeological context and provenance. This paper examines the aims and outcomes of the Nottingham and Midland Counties Working Classes Industrial Exhibition of 1865-1866. The event ostensibly promoted the achievements of local working class residents and the paper analyses the presence and influence of those residents and the role that the Exhibition played within the town. In particular, Sutherland addresses the process by which the venue and its contents - including a versatile musical repertoire - were housed within a developing cultural quarter financed and approved by local government and industry leaders, a space that promoted rational cultural activity and modified contributions by individual exhibitors and performers, to produce an advertisement of stable civic identity. This article discusses the spectacle and publicity that surrounded the exhibition and auction of the Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire, which was home to writer and traveler William Beckford. When Beckford decided to sell the Fonthill Abbey and its contents due to low finances, an open house of the property thrust it to the national spotlight, and led magazines and papers to write about the Fonthill's opulence. Publicity led to the two portrayals of the Fonthill Abbey, which included one on its iconic grandeur and monetary value, and another on its proprietary and comfortable character. It is said that because the house, as well as its extension of private collections, was opened to the public for financial gain, the architectural vision was undermined by the publicity that surrounded the sale.

During the two world wars of the twentieth century, American cultural wares were spread far and wide, and the global pervasiveness of US troops contributed significantly toward this development. One major aspect of an American serviceman's spare time was his involvement with sporting pursuits and, where possible, baseball matches were played, and even formalized, in the guise of exhibition matches played for war charities. Little, if anything, has been written about the matches that were played by the American military outside the USA from the perspective of the indigenous population. This paper examines the English response to the 'friendly' American invasion: the invasion of allied troops and their favourite pastime, baseball. Hosting large events has long been associated with the physical regeneration of cities. To supplement these 'hard' impacts, cities are now attempting to use events to stimulate 'softer' social and economic regeneration. This paper evaluates the impacts of the Legacy Programme adopted in conjunction with the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, UK. Alongside its emphasis on social and economic regeneration, this programme was unusual in that the projects were games-themed, rather than being directly linked to the event. Despite some concerns about the organisational structures employed and the sustainability of impacts, target beneficiaries have received valuable assistance from the programme. It is reported that an exhibition of medical photography will be held in the Claire Wand Gallery of the British Medical Association, Tavistock Square, London, England, from March 3 to April 20, 1964. Also, the article reports on professor Alfred Marchionini. Marchionini has been Director of the Dermatological Clinic in the University of Munich. In 1938 he emigrated for political reasons to Turkey and worked in the Dermatological Clinic in Ankara and in 1945 he became Professor in the newly founded medical faculty in the University of Anltara.

The article reports on the highlights of the autumn meeting of the British Ecological Society that was held at the Botany School of the University of Cambridge, England on September 27-29, 1954. A soirée was held to open the meeting, and an extensive range of exhibits was organized as part of the event. Background: Our study aimed to evaluate to what extent Zero2 Expo's 'Birthing a Better Future', a co‐created multimedia exhibition, was effective in raising awareness on the importance of the first 1001 days of life and explore what refinements would help to optimize the impact of future exhibitions. Methods: We conducted a mixed‐methods evaluation of the exhibition delivered in the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Through convenience sampling, 14 participants were selected to participate in 12 structured interviews and 19 participants completed a questionnaire. Interviews were thematically analysed alongside quantitative analysis of questionnaire responses through Likert scales. Results: The majority (78.6%, n = 11/14) of participants who completed the questionnaire either agreed or strongly agreed that the exhibition raised their awareness about the first 1001 days of life. This was supported by the analysis of interviews. The use of art was found to provoke an emotional engagement from participants. Participants felt that the length of the written pieces and location of the exhibition were important factors for designers to consider in future exhibitions. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that multimedia exhibitions, combining science with art, may be an effective way to raise awareness of public health messages. Engaging with key stakeholders will be an essential step in order to improve future public health exhibitions. The discovery of its structure 50 years ago by Francis Crick and James Watson began a slow-burning revolution that has made biology the hottest field in modern science. The first exhibition presents a selection of Francis Crick's papers, acquired recently by the Wellcome Trust with the cooperation of the United Kingdom Heritage Lottery Fund. The article discusses English photographer and psychiatrist Hugh Welch Diamond's use of photography in clinical psychiatry. English medieval cathedrals are a group of buildings of exceptional significance and they contain collections of equal importance. Both the historic building fabric and the artefacts are vulnerable to environmental deterioration. However, unlike buildings owned by heritage organisations, the primary purpose of cathedrals is to further the Christian mission, and the conservation of the building and collections is required to be conducted within these constraints. Increasing visitor numbers and the installation of sophisticated exhibitions makes the task of conservation all the more demanding. Next to mechanical damage, environmental factors are the greatest source of deterioration to sensitive fabric and collections. However, until recently, there has been little systematic study of English cathedral environments and the effects of different uses and control measures. Detailed studies undertaken on 20 cathedrals in the past two decades have provided an insight into their environmental performance and how they differ as a group from many other historic buildings, as well as the passive conservation measures that can be implemented within their primary function.
